HEALTHY LIVING & DIABETES AWARENESS PRE-CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER

IPSF PUBLIC HEALTH EDITION

Healthy Living & Diabetes Awareness Campaign Intro

Picture from WDD in Bangladesh 2009

Dear fellow IPSFers, November 14, 2010 is World Diabetes Day. It is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world. In 1991, this was first introduced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) due to the alarming rise in diabetes around the globe. In response to World Diabetes Day, IPSF would like to invite you to join us for the annual Healthy Living and Diabetes Campaign. Our aim is to build a circle of encouragement and support for all pharmacy students worldwide to become proactively involved in increasing awareness among health professionals, as well as the general public, about the importance of healthy lifestyle in the prevention and care of chronic disease. Together, we as pharmacy students can make a difference.

What is the purpose of the

Healthy Living & Diabetes Awareness Campaign? Did you know that…… 1 in 3 people with diabetes have it and don’t know it. On average, people have diabetes for 7 years before diagnosis. 1 in 5 people with diabetes survives heart disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 171 million people worldwide with diabetes. This figure is estimated to double to approximately 366 million by year 2030. We already know that with early diagnosis and good diabetes management, the risks associated with diabetes can be cut down. So let’s take action now before it is too late! As pharmacy leaders and future healthcare professionals, it is important that all IPSF members take a proactive stance in spreading the importance of healthy living and diabetes awareness. What are you doing to make a difference?

Why is this an important issue for pharmacy students and pharmacists?

Goals of the Campaign

The World Diabetes Day 2009-2013 theme is Diabetes Education and Prevention.

• to increase awareness of the role of healthy lifestyle in prevention and care of diabetes

HEALTHY LIVING & DIABETES PRE-CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER

As a key player in providing primary health care to the public, pharmacists are in the ideal position to act within the realms of preventative medicine and education, in order to ensure that the community is aware of all risks associated with diabetes. Promoting a healthy lifestyle is fundamental, and in some instances this may also include pharmaceutical care intervention. In this case, the pharmacist is in the perfect position to combine their knowledge of medication with nonpharmaceutical aspects of patient care. Pharmacists are often the most accessible and most visited health care professionals within the patient care community, and must use this position to positively influence patients who may not otherwise seek help for their current or foreseeable health concerns.

• to encourage pro-active rather than re-active health promotion • to further involve pharmacy students and pharmacists into the prevention and care of diabetes in a multidisciplinary environment Picture from WDD in Singapore 2009
