Dear IPSFers, It is with great pleasure that I write to you in this May issue of the IPSF News Bulletin. Over the past year, the Executive Committee has put in a lot of effort consolidating our relationships with our partner organisations, both professional and student organisations.

IPSF collaboration with other students' organisations has progressed very well this year. Our Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Pharmaceutical Students' Association (EPSA) was renewed in 2007, and IPSF was also represented at the annual EPSA Congress this April 2008. Our relationship with the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) continues to strengthen, with the IFMSA Liaison Officer to Student Organisations (LOSO) meeting with the IPSF Executive Committee at the first Executive Committee Meeting in September 2007. In addition, we look forward to collaborating with IFMSA and other student organisations to rd World Healthcare Students' Symposium (WHSS) organise the 3rd nd together after the success of the 2nd WHSS in Portugal in 2007!

In November 2007, IPSF was proud to be one of the student nd organisations to host the 2nd World Healthcare Students Symposium (WHSS) in Albufeira, Portugal. WHSS is jointly organised by pharmacy and medical student organisations biannually, giving pharmacy, medical and nursing students the unique opportunity to share ideas and discuss multi-disciplinary rd healthcare issues. The 3rd WHSS will be held in Alexandria, Egypt, we look forward to bringing an even larger spectrum of students together.

IPSF has been developing our Training Programme this year, called Leaders in Training (LIT). IPSF was invited to the IFMSA March Meeting 2008 in Monterrey, Mexico where we were able to participate in their training program held prior the congress. The th LIT program will be launched this year at the 7th APPS in Khon th Kaen, Thailand in June and at the 54th IPSF Congress, ClujNapoca, Romania in July.

This year has been a big year for our publications portfolio. We have revamped our website and also the Authorized login section, which also hosts the new e-e-groups service which will be in full service soon. In addition, the SEP database has been revamped and updated, and is now much user-friendly for our Student Exchange Officers. I hope that all our members have enjoyed reading the IPSF e-newsletter, which now has an updated format.

The position of Education and Practice, which was a very large portfolio, has been divided into two portfolios, Education and Professional Development. This has worked out to be much more manageable and has allowed the respective Chairpersons to focus much more intensely on the projects under that portfolio.

Promotion to non-member countries and support of our existing members is always on-going, and we are excited to have a number of organisations from all regions of the world which are interested to become part of the IPSF family in the future.

I am looking forward to the months ahead leading up to IPSF Congress, and our members' enthusiasm is inspiration to us all! I hope that you may expand your knowledge through this IPSF News Bulletin and you are inspired yourself to get involved with IPSF. Looking forward to seeing you all at IPSF Congress in Romania!

Dear IPSF friends, Greetings from Australia! My name is Mary Poon and I'm 22 years old. I graduated from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in Melbourne in November 2007 and am currently undergoing pre-registration training in hospital pharmacy. I have attended two IPSF congresses since Cairns 2006, and three Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposiums (APPS) since th the 4th APPS 2005 in Tokyo. I have served as local president

of VPSA, and been involved with NAPSA Australia on the national council and Reception Committee of NAPSA Congress 2007. My involvement with IPSF began when I was elected as Secretary of the Asia Pacific Regional Office th APPS Indonesia. After being (APRO) for 2006-07 at the 5th

Being Secretary-General requires an extensive knowledge of the Federation in all aspects and ongoing issues, which gives the opportunity to have an exclusive insight and overview of the Federation, internally and externally. The position requires fluency in written and spoken English, efficient organisational skills and dedication to administrative work as there is a lot of background preparation for your own portfolio and also in support of other Executive members' portfolios.

Collaboration with FIP on The FIP-IPSF Students' Programme Looking for an international experience on a professional pharmacist level? The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) World Congress is your answer. FIP and IPSF have collaborated on joint sessions during the FIP World Congress for the past several years. Based on this history of successful sessions, FIP and IPSF have discussed progressing further with a students' programme.

Beginning in either the FIP World Congress in 2009 (Istanbul) or 2010 (Lisbon), IPSF will have its own tract, specific for students.

Within FIP, each section has a tract with programming for specific interests. For example, the Community Pharmacy Section has a tract that includes its sessions and other presentations or workshops of interest to community pharmacists. IPSF will continue to collaborate with various FIP sections to provide joint sessions. At future FIP World Congresses, IPSF will have a greater student voice by providing interesting and relevant topics for students.

Although IPSF is focusing on the student perspective, FIP World Congress participants have many opportunities to network with professional pharmacists from around the world at meetings, presentations, dinners, and other social events. For more information about FIP, please visit www.fip.org.

New IPSF Representatives for The JWG of The 3rd World Healthcare Students’ Symposium 2009 rd New IPSF representatives for the Joint Working Group of the 3rd World Healthcare Students' Symposium 2009 IPSF Executive has selected two new Joint Working Group rd (JWG) representatives for the 3rd World Healthcare Students' Symposium (WorldHSS) in 2009. They are Mette Lykke Rathje (SOP, Denmark) and Kalman Wijaya (HMF ‘Ars Praeparandi’ ITB, Indonesia). Mette is a fifth year pharmacy student from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. She is the IPSF Contact Person and currently co-ordinating local collaborative projects between pharmacy and medical students. Kalman is a fourth year student from the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia.

He has been the IPSF Contact Person for HMF-ITB, and is currently the Regional Projects Officer for IPSF Asia-Pacific Regional Office (APRO) and the IPSF representative for the Psquared project which is in collaboration with the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA).

There is ongoing discussion with the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Associations (IFPMA) about setting up an internship.

Development Fund Update Thanks to the generous and feverish delegate bidding at the Development Fund Auction during the Annual Congress in Taiwan last August, over 5500 Euro was added to the Development Fund.

Consequently the DF Committee have continued to co-ordinate the broad range of grants and opportunities the Fund offers to IPSF members this year. The grants awarded include Event Grants (incorporating the Annual IPSF Congress in Romania, the Pan-American Regional Symposium (PARS), the Asia-Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium (APPS) and the World Healthcare Students' Symposium (WHSS)); Membership Fee Grants and the Student Exchange Programme (SEP) Grants. This year a major focus of the DF Committee has been to increase the diversity of the grants provided and in particular extending the category of the Project Grant. It is also hoped that promotion and awareness among members on DF matters can be raised and hence the IPSF website has incorporated a section devoted to the DF. All are encouraged to visit the website and contact their respective CPs to remain informed on DF progress updates.

WHO and IPSF: Joint Statement on Tobacco Control World Health Organization (WHO) and IPSF signed the Joint st Statement on Tobacco Control on World No Tobacco Day, 31st May 2007. According to WHO statistics, tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world. Therefore, IPSF and WHO recognises the need for an immediate and active response to the tobacco epidemic to protect public health. The joint statement marks IPSF's active involvement in fighting against tobacco as future healthcare professionals. It is also in line with the past IPSF activities in promoting tobacco-free culture and general advocating improved public health.

This statement urges all IPSF Member Organisations to pursue tobacco control goals and principles that include: 1)

Reduction of global burden of disease and death caused by tobacco consumption,

2)

Advocating of 100% tobacco free environments to protect people from second-hand tobacco smoke,

3)

Promotion of pharmacists' and pharmacy students' role in the fight against tobacco,

4)

Promotion of World No Tobacco Day,

5)

Facilitation of collaboration of healthcare professionals in the field of tobacco cessation and implementation of campaigns promoting tobacco-free places,

6)

Quantification the contribution of IPSF members in creating tobacco-free future through IPSF Declaration of Commitment on Tobacco Control.

Internships IPSF facilitates members applying for an internship within four WHO departments and Stop TB Partnership in Geneva, Switzerland. The WHO departments are Policy Medicine and Standards, Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response, HIV/AIDS, and Health Promotion. The activities and experiences available to interns depend on the department and can range from contributing to publications, literature searches, and generating and analyzing results of surveys.

An internship with the WHO or Stop TB Partnership can be a very rewarding experience, in terms of learning new information and skills, gaining an understanding for various international issues, and contributing to projects that will 6 International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

UNESCO 3rd Global Forum on International Quality Assurance, Accreditation and the Recognition of Qualifications My name is Nomvula Mabuza and I am a third year Pharmacy th th student from Rhodes University in South Africa. On 12 to 13th September 2007 I represented IPSF as a student reporter at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization rd Global Forum on International Quality Assurance, (UNESCO) 3rd Accreditation and the Recognition of Qualifications in Dar-esSaalam, Tanzania. My job as the student reporter was to record the proceedings of the student workshops and to give a report back to the rest of the forum attendants. What seemed like a difficult task was made easier by the support I got from Zhining Goh (IPSF Chairperson of Education and Practice 2006-07) and my lecturer Billy Futter before the event, as well Tana Wuliji (FIP Projects Co-ordinator) and Liliana Simionescu (UNESCO) during the conference.

The Forum was attended by over 150 people from all spheres of higher education. The programme was divided into five sections, one of which was the parallel thematic workshops where I spent most of my time. The students' workshop was one of three which involved stakeholders in cross-border higher education and long distance education, as well as teachers in higher education. The workshops were divided into two days.

Day two focused on quality provision and fraud, with presentations on existing tools in this area and issues such as bogus institutions. The main idea from this workshop was that students should be involved in the assessment of legibility of the courses they take, including evaluation of lecturers without fearing intimidation from the bodies being assessed. It was also suggested that public listing of all legal institutions would be of benefit to students when making their choices for higher education institutions.

Informal discussions amongst the student organisations present at the forum were even more interesting. Student bodies present included the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), International Association of Agricultural Students (IAAS), Asian Students Association (ASA), European Confederation of Junior Enterprises (JADE) and others. It was during these discussions that I met up with the other student representatives and the discussions that ensued

came up with possible solutions for capacity building that UNESCO could assist students with.

The Forum was exciting because it was filled with people who were passionate about the provision of quality higher education.

The thematic debates were evidence that there is a lot of work that needs to be done before there can be the “ideal higher education system” but the enthusiasm of the participants was evidence that higher education is making an attempt to breed good quality graduates.

After the Forum, participants had the opportunity to see the city of Dar-es-Saalam and the first stop was the Open University of Tanzania. Other sites included the local market and the villages but unfortunately I could not finish the tour because I had to take a flight back to South Africa. It was exciting to see how similar and yet different two African countries can be.

Thank you IPSF for granting me this great opportunity and I hope the outcomes of the Forum will be of great benefit to the ones that need them most - the students.

On day one, the focus was on recognition and higher education spaces. The aim of the workshop was to identify areas where UNESCO can contribute to providing resources that benefit students directly in identifying quality courses of study and facilitating the recognition of their qualification. A number of student organisations presented their organisational structures and how they do things that is of benefit to their student members. The highlighted system of interest was experiential learning. All organisations agreed that incorporation of experience into the learning system was a sure way to provide quality education. A common problem faced by student organisations was that the experience obtained through their organisational programmes was considered “extracurricular work” and not recognised by academic institutions as part of their qualifications.

P Squared, A New Way for A Better Global Health What is P-squared (P 2) ? P squared is stand for Pharmacists X Physician = P 2. History of P Squared began when IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Association) and IPSF (International Pharmaceutical Students Federation) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at IFMSA august meeting (Zlatibor, Serbia). One point in this MoU is continuosly aim to promote multi-diciplinary health care, health education and research in collaboration by encouraging local collaboration on public health projects, students exchange, and other initiatives.

About two moths ago, every organization (IFMSA/IPSF) decide three persons to represent their organization in P-Squared.

The Tripartite Pharmacy Education Taskforce and Engagement with IPSF Rationale for a Pharmacy Education Action Plan The role of the pharmacist has been discussed extensively in the past by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other stakeholders. Rigorous consultations between WHO and the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) led to adoption of the role of the pharmacist within WHO's Revised Drug Strategy as well as the proposal of the concept of the “SevenStar Pharmacist” - caregiver, decision-maker, communicator, leader, manager, life-long-learner, and teacher.

Service-led pharmaceutical care and rational drug use are increasingly being promoted by health service policies and health needs and the related roles of pharmacists in healthcare systems are evolving in response to this. However, the increasing recognition for pharmacists' medicines expertise is accompanied by acknowledgement and evidence of skills under-utilisation, professional migration and workforce shortage.

Underpinning this, pharmacy education reform is now heading the healthcare agenda to cross-examine the standards and quality of pharmacy education, in a bid to tackle such workforce issues and practice role changes. Pharmacy education is expected to change to match contemporary and future career expectations, and to produce competent graduates with skills relevant to health service needs.

In September 2006 the first FIP Global Pharmacy Education Roundtable was held in Salvador Bahia, Brazil to discuss the development of a global vision for pharmacy education. This led to the development of the Pharmacy Education Taskforce, domains for action and recommendations for an Action Plan. A year later (September 2007), the second Roundtable was held in Beijing, China to focus on building consensus and to seek consensus on an Action Plan that would seek to facilitate comprehensive pharmacy education development and progress.

collaborative global framework to quantify the required pharmacy workforce levels, develop models to build training capacity for the scaling up pharmacy education and training and provide technical support for country level action and human resources for health planning to ensure the provision of essential pharmaceutical services and care.

The Taskforce is comprised of recognised experts in pharmacy and education. The Taskforce advisory group is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Action Plan and monitoring progress. Project teams in three streams of work - quality assurance, academic and institution capacity and competency and vision - will ensure the deliverables via an evidence-based consultative and participatory approach.

Taskforce Objectives and Action Plan

The Action Plan will facilitate the 'development of optimal educational systems through a cycle that first seeks to assess and understand local needs'. Based on the needs, services can then be defined and the training of health professionals will be based on these needs in order to prepare a competent workforce.

It aims to deal with the human resource for health and will also assist in making the most of resources, improving health outcomes and strengthening health systems.

been proposed and a global consultation will be held each year to feed into the development of each phase.

El Congreso Mundial de la Federación Internacional Farmacéutica (FIP) es tu respuesta. FIP y IPSF han colaborado en sesiones conjuntas durante el Congreso Mundial de la FIP durante los últimos años. Basándonos en este historial de sesiones exitosas, FIP y IPSF han acordado dar un paso adelante con un programa para estudiantes.

Empezando en el Congreso Mundial de la FIP en 2009 (Estambul) o 2010 (Lisboa), IPSF dispondrá de su propio acuerdo específico para estudiantes. National member organisations of IPSF can do much to encourage the participation of their Universities, professional bodies and others in the Action Plan process as well as spread the word. This is also a good opportunity for students to share their opinions in shaping the development of pharmacy education and profession. The scope of the Taskforce's work and mutual interest in one another's activities necessitated this collaboration. FIP represents and serves pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences worldwide. As the global director for health matters, WHO's involvement is expected and essential. UNESCO promotes higher education in the increasingly knowledge-based society as a key factor for cultural, economic and political development, sustainable development and as an endogenous capacitybuilder, amongst other things. It also responds to key challenges in higher education posed by globalisation and has embarked on an active process of improving higher education through quality assurance and the recognition of qualifications. The leverage on one another's expertise is more efficient and effective in serving the global needs in pharmacy education.

Mejoras en las Becas para el Desarrollo Gracias a los generosos y entusiastas delegados que pujaron en la Subasta celebrada en el Congreso Anual en Taiwán el pasado mes de agosto, se recaudaron más de 5.500€ para las Becas para el Desarrollo. En consecuencia, el Comité que gestiona dichas ayudas ha coordinado la amplia gama de becas y oportunidades que se ofrecen a los miembros de IPSF este año.

Las becas incluyen ayudas para asistir a eventos como el Congreso Anual de IPSF en Rumania, el Simposio Regional Panamericano (PARS), el Simposio Farmacéutico Regional AsiaPacífico (APPS) y el Simposio Mundial para Estudiantes de la Salud (WHSS), Becas para las cuotas de membresía y para el Programa de Intercambio de Estudiantes (SEP). Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y IPSF: Declaración Conjunta para el Control del Tabaco La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y IPSF firmaron la Declaración Conjunta para el Control del Tabaco durante el Día Mundial Contra el Tabaco, 31 de Mayo de 2007. De acuerdo a las estadísticas de la OMS, el tabaco es la segunda causa de mortalidad en el mundo. Por tanto, IPSF y OMS reconocen la necesidad de una respuesta inmediata y activa ante la epidemia del tabaco para proteger la salud pública. La declaración conjunta señala la implicación activa de IPSF en la lucha contra el tabaco como futuros profesionales de la salud. También está en la misma línea de trabajo que las actividades de IPSF realizadas en el pasado para promover una cultura sin tabaco y mejorar la salud pública.

Este acuerdo insta a todas las Asociaciones Miembro de IPSF a marcar unos objetivos y principios para el control del tabaco, que incluyan: 1) Reducción de la morbilidad global y mortalidad causada por el consumo de tabaco, 2) Promover los entornos libres de tabaco al 100% para proteger a los fumadores pasivos del humo, 3) Promover el rol de los farmacéuticos y estudiantes de farmacia en la lucha contra el tabaco, 4) Promover el Día Mundial Contra el Tabaco, 5) Facilitar la colaboración de los profesionales de la salud en el abandono del consumo de tabaco y la implementación de campañas promoviendo los lugares sin tabaco, 10 International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

6) Cuantificación de la contribución de los miembros de IPSF en la creación de un futuro sin tabaco a través de la Declaración de Compromiso para el Control del Tabaco.

La Declaración de Compromiso para el Control del Tabaco de IPSF creará un sistema de puntuación de 3 estrellas, (bronce, plata y oro) que indicará las mejoras conseguidas por las Asociaciones Miembros de IPSF en el control del tabaco. Las estrellas se ganarán en función de las actividades realizadas por cada asociación que estén relacionadas con la promoción de una cultura libre de tabaco, como la participación en el Día Mundial Contra el Tabaco y conseguir tener Facultades de Farmacia sin tabaco. Una vez se hayan recibido y evaluado los informes de los miembros, estará disponible en la página web de IPSF un listado de las asociaciones miembro con sus actividades relacionadas con el tabaco.

3er Foro Global de la UNESCO sobre la Garantía de Calidad Internacional, la Acreditación y el Reconocimiento de Calificaciones Mi nombre es Nomvula Mabuza y soy una estudiante de tercer año en la Universidad de Rhodes en Sudáfrica. Los días 12 y 13 de Septiembre de 2007 representé a IPSF como reportera estudiantil en el 3r Foro Global de la Organización Educacional, Científica y Cultural de las Naciones Unidas (UNESCO) sobre la Garantía de Calidad Internacional, la Acreditación y el Reconocimiento de Calificaciones en Dar-es-Saalam, Tanzania.

Mi trabajo como reportera estudiantil era registrar los procedimientos de las conferencias de los estudiantes y realizar los informes para el resto de participantes del Forum. Lo que parecía una tarea difícil fue facilitado por el apoyo que recibí de Zhining Goh (Coordinadora de IPSF de Educación y Práctica 2006-07) y el ponente Billy Futre antes del evento, así como el apoyo de Tana Wuliji (Coordinadora de Proyectos de la FIP) y Liliana Simionescu (UNESCO) durante la conferencia.

Más de 150 personas de todos los ámbitos de la educación superior participaron en el Foro. El programa se dividió en cinco secciones, una de las cuales era paralela a las conferencias en las que pasé la mayor parte del tiempo. La conferencia de estudiantes fue una de las tres que implicaba participantes clave en el límite de la educación superior y la educación a larga distancia, así como profesores de educación superior. Las charlas se dividieron en dos días.

Durante el primer día, se hizo hincapié en el reconocimiento de los espacios de educación superior. El objetivo era identificar las áreas en las cuales la UNESCO puede contribuir aportando fuentes que beneficien directamente a los estudiantes en la identificación de cursos de calidad y facilitando el reconocimiento de esa cualificación. Diversas organizaciones estudiantiles presentaron su estructura organizativa, y explicaron su manera de hacer las cosas para beneficiar a sus estudiantes miembros. El sistema que destacó por su interés fue el aprendizaje experimental. Todas las organizaciones estuvieron de acuerdo en que la incorporación de la experiencia en el sistema de aprendizaje era una manera segura de aportar una educación de calidad. Un problema común que afrontaban las asociaciones era que la experiencia obtenida a través de sus programas se consideraba trabajo extracurricular, y no estaba reconocido por las instituciones académicas como parte de sus cualificaciones.

3er Foro Global de la UNESCO sobre la Garantía de Calidad Internacional, la Acreditación y el Reconocimiento de Calificaciones posibles soluciones para la construcción de capacidad, en la que UNESCO podría ayudar a los estudiantes.

El Forum fue emocionante porque estaba lleno de gente apasionada por conseguir una educación superior de calidad. Los debates temáticos eran la prueba de que hay mucho trabajo por hacer antes de que exista un “sistema ideal de educación superior”, pero el entusiasmo de los participantes era prueba de que la educación superior está dando un paso para conseguir graduados de buena calidad.

Los representantes de estudiantes se hacen una fotograifia El segundo día se centró en la aportación de calidad y el fraude, con presentaciones sobre las herramientas que existen en estas áreas y hallazgos como las instituciones falsas. La idea principal de esta conferencia era que los estudiantes deberían implicarse en el asesoramiento de la elegibilidad de los cursos que ellos realizan, incluyendo la evaluación de los ponentes sin temor a la intimidación por parte de los conferenciantes evaluados.

También se sugirió que los listados públicos de todas las instituciones legales serían beneficiosos para los estudiantes en el momento de tomar la decisión de escoger una institución de educación superior (dónde realizar sus estudios).

Después del Foro, los participantes tuvieron la ocasión de ver la ciudad de Dar-es-Saalam y la primera parada fue la Universidad Abierta de Tanzania. Otros lugares visitados fueron el mercado local y los pueblos, pero desafortunadamente yo no pude finalizar la visita porque tenía que viajar de vuelta a Sudáfrica. Fue emocionante ver como dos países africanos pueden ser tan parecidos y tan diferentes al mismo tiempo.

Agradezco a IPSF el haberme dado esta oportunidad, y espero que los resultados del Foro sean de gran beneficio para aquellos que más lo necesitan: los estudiantes.

Las discusiones informales entre las organizaciones de estudiants fueron todavía más interesantes. Los cuerpos estudiantiles presentes fueron la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Estudiantes de Medicina (IFMSA), la Asociación Internacional de Estudiantes de Agricultura (IAAS), la Asociación de Estudiantes Asiática (ASA) y la Confederación Europea de Empresas Júnior (JADE), entre otras. Fue durante estas discusiones cuando coincidí con otros representantes de estudiantes, y las conversaciones que tuvimos nos llevaron a

Además, P ha sido incluido en la Conferencia de APRO en el 6º Simposio APPS en Nepal (Simposio Farmacéutico Regional Asia-Pacífico), en la Conferencia de APRO y la conferencia global en el Congreso Anual de IPSF en Taipei, y también en el Congreso de IFMSA en agosto en Londres.

¿Qué es P al cuadrado (P ) o P-squared? P squared significa Farmacéuticos x Médicos (Pharmacists X Physician = P 2 ). La historia de P square empezó cuando IFMSA (Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Estudiantes de Medicina) y IPSF (Federación Internacional de Estudiantes de Farmacia) firmaron un Convenio de Colaboración (Memorandum of Understanding- MoU) en el Congreso de IFMSA de agosto, en (Zlatibor, Serbia). Uno de los puntos del MoU es promover el cuidado multidisciplinar de la salud, la educación sanitaria y la investigación en colaboración, mediante las mejoras en proyectos locales de salud pública, intercambio de estudiantes y otras iniciativas.

El papel del farmacéutico ha sido discutido en profundidad en el pasado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y otros organismos. Las rigurosas consultas entre la OMS y la Federación Internacional de Farmacéuticos (FIP) llevaron a la adopción del rol del farmacéutico dentro de la “Revisión Estratégica de la OMS sobre Medicamentos” así como la propuesta del concepto del “Farmacéutico de las Siete Estrellas” proveedor de cuidados, tomador de decisiones, comunicador, líder, gestor, alumno de por vida y profesor.

La atención farmacéutica dirigida al público y el uso racional de los medicamentos son promovidos cada vez más por las políticas sociales sanitarias y por las necesidades de la salud y los roles relacionados de los farmacéuticos en los sistemas sanitarios están evolucionando en respuesta a esto. A pesar de esto, el incremento en el reconocimiento de los farmacéuticos como expertos en el medicamento está acompañado de la aceptación de la evidencia de habilidades malgastadas, migración profesional y escasez de personal.

En relación a esto, la reforma de la educación farmacéutica está hoy en día encabezando los objetivos sanitarios para examinar los estándares y calidad de la educación farmacéutica en un intento de derribar esos problemas de personal y producir cambios en el rol. Se espera que la educación farmacéutica cambie para cumplir las expectativas profesionales actuales y futuras, y para producir graduados competentes con habilidades que se correspondan con las necesidades de los servicios de salud.

En Septiembre de 2006 tuvo lugar la primera Mesa Redonda en Educación Global Farmacéutica de FIP en Salvador de Bahía, Brasil, para discutir el desarrollo de una visión global para la educación farmacéutica. Esto llevó a la creación del Grupo de Trabajo de la Educación Farmacéutica, para obtener recomendaciones sobre un Plan de Acción. Un año más tarde (Septiembre de 2007), la Segunda Mesa Redonda tuvo lugar en Pekín, China, para centrase en la construcción de un consenso y buscar consenso en un Plan de Acción que buscaría facilitar la comprensión del desarrollo y progreso de la educación farmacéutica.

Objetivos del Grupo de Trabajo y Plan de Acción El objetivo del Grupo de Trabajo en Educación Farmacéutica es desarrollar un marco de colaboración global para cuantificar los niveles requeridos de personal farmacéutico, desarrollo de modelos para construir formación de preparación para el progreso de la educación farmacéutica y proveer ayuda técnica para acciones a nivel nacional y recursos humanos para la planificación de la sanidad, con el fin de asegurar la provisión de los servicios y cuidados farmacéuticos esenciales.

El Grupo de Trabajo está formado por reconocidos expertos en farmacia y educación. El grupo de apoyo del Grupo de Trabajo es responsable del seguimiento de la implementación del Plan de Acción y de monitorizar el progreso. El proyecto se divide en tres áreas de trabajo garantía de calidad, aptitud de las instituciones y universidades, y capacidad y visión con el fin de asegurar un acercamiento a los objetivos basado en un modelo consultativo y participativo en torno a las evidencias.

El Plan de Acción facilitará el “desarrollo de sistemas educacionales óptimos a través de un ciclo que primero busca asesorar y entender las necesidades locales”. Basado en las necesidades, los servicios se pueden definir y el entrenamiento de profesionales de la salud se basará en estas necesidades con el fin de preparar un personal competente. aumentar los recursos humanos para la salud y también asistir en la creación de la mayoría de los recursos, mejorando los resultados de salud y fortaleciendo los sistemas sanitarios.

Se ha propuesto un Plan de Acción en Educación Farmacéutica 2008-2010 de tres fases, y cada año tendrá lugar una consulta global para comprobar el desarrollo de cada fase.

Un Grupo de Trabajo Tripartito e IPSF Una colaboración tripartita entre FIP, OMS y UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) se presentó oficialmente en Marzo de 2008 durante el Primer Foro de Recursos Humanos para la Salud en Kampala, Uganda, para ejecutar el Plan de Acción.

El alcance de las tareas del Grupo de Trabajo y el mutuo interés de cada organismo en la actividad de los demás necesitaba de esta colaboración. FIP representa y sirve a los farmacéuticos y científicos farmacéuticos de todo el mundo. Como el director global para los asuntos sanitarios, la implicación de la OMS es esencial. UNESCO promueve la educación superior en una sociedad basada cada vez más en el conocimiento como un factor clave para el desarrollo cultural, económico y político, desarrollo sostenible y como un creador de aptitudes intrínseco, entre otras cosas. También responde a los retos claves en educación planteados por la globalización, y se ha embarcado en un proceso activo de mejora del sistema de educación superior a través de la garantía de calidad y del reconocimiento de calificaciones.

Basándose en la experiencia de los demás se consigue mayor eficiencia y efectividad para servir las necesidades globales en educación farmacéutica.

El Grupo de Trabajo buscará la unión de todos los organismos de la profesión, incluyendo los estudiantes, que han sido contribuidores en las consultas, llevando al establecimiento del Plan de Acción 2008-2010. Cómo la organización global líder para estudiantes de farmacia, debe ser de interés e importancia para IPSF la participación activa en todos los aspectos del Plan de Acción para facilitar y contribuir en su exitoso progreso.

Collaboration with FIP on The FIP-IPSF Students' Programme Vous êtes à la recherche d'une expérience internationale à un niveau professionnel en tant que future pharmacien ? Le congrès pharmaceutique international de la Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique (FIP) est votre réponse. La FIP et l'IPSF collaborent sur des sessions communes lors du congrès annuel de la FIP depuis plusieurs années. Basé sur ces expériences antérieures réussies, la FIP et l'IPSF ont décidé d'aller encore plus loin avec un programme spécialement conçus pour les étudiants.

Ce programme, devant débuter lors du congrès annuel de la FIP en 2009 (Istanbul) ou en 2010 (Lisbonne), IPSF aura son propre programme,spécifiquement pour les étudiants. Dans la FIP, chaque section a un horaire avec une programmation orientée selon des intérêts spécifiques. Par exemple, la section de pharmacie communautaire ou d'officine a un programme incluant des sessions et d'autres présentations ou ateliers d'intérêt aux pharmaciens officinaux. L'IPSF continuera à collaborer avec les diverses sections de la FIP afin fr continuer les ateliers-conférences communs. Lors des prochains congrès mondiaux annuels de la FIP, l'IPSF prendra une place de plus en plus grande en offrant des conférences sur des sujets intéressants et pertinents pour les étudiants.

Bien que l'IPSF se concentre davantage sur les points de vue de l'étudiant, les participants du congrès annuel mondial de la FIP ont beaucoup d'occasions de rencontres. Ces rencontres pourront leur permettre de créer des réseaux et des contacts avec les pharmaciens professionnels de partout dans le monde lors des réunions, des présentations, des dîners, et lors des autres événements sociaux inclus dans le programme du congrès annuel de la FIP. Mise-à-jour du Fond de Développ Lors du congrès IPSF à Taiwan l'été dernier, plus de 5500€ sont venus remplir les coffres du Fond de Développement de l'IPSF(DF) grâce aux généreuses mises offertes par les délégués enthousiastes lors de la vente aux enchères pour le fond de développement (DF). Suite à cela, le comité responsable du DF a continué à coordonner l'attribution d'une grande variété de bourses offertes aux membres de l'IPSF dont celles pour une participation aux évènements (Event Grants) incluant le congrès annuel de l'IPSF en Roumanie, le Symposium régional panaméricain (PARS) et le symposium mondial des étudiants en santé (WHSS). Il y a aussi des bourses pour couvrir le montant de la cotisation qu'une organisation doit payer pour être membre de l'IPSF de même qu'une bourse pour le Student exchange Program (SEP). Cette année, le comité a souhaité proposer des bourses variées en particulier en ajoutant la catégorie des bourses aux projets. Nous espérons que la promotion et la sensibilisation auprès des membres des problématiques du DF vont évoluer et dans ce sens, une section dédiée au DF a été incorporée au site web de l'IPSF. Nous vous encourageons à visiter le site web et contacter vos CPs respectif pour rester informés de l'évolution du DF.

Stages L'IPSF encourage les membres à poser leur candidature pour un internat dans un des quatre départements de l'OMS et au sein du groupe de collaboration « Stop TB(Tuberculose)» à Genève, en Suisse. Les départements de l'OMS où un stage est possible sont :Politique Médicale et Normes, Alerte et action en cas d'épidémie et de pandémie, HIV/SIDA, département Promotion de la santé.

Les activités et les expériences accessibles dans le cadre de ce stage varieront selon le département impliqué et iront de la rédaction de publications, à la recherche dans la littérature existante mais aussi à la production et l'analyse des résultats de sondages.

Un stage au sein de l'OMS ou dans le cadre du Partenariat “Stop TB” peut s'avérer être une expérience très enrichissante soit par l'apprentissage de nouvelles connaissances et d'aptitudes, d'une meilleure compréhension de nombreux enjeux internationaux de même que par une participation à des projets qui auront un impact réel sur la santé au niveau mondial.

Généralement, si vous voulez poser votre candidature pour un tel stage, vous devrez fournir votre curriculum vitae (cv), une lettre de recommandation de votre université, ainsi qu'une lettre de motivation. Des discussions sont actuellements en cours avec la Fédération Internationale des Associations de Laboratoires Pharmaceutiques pour mettre au point un stage.

Nouveaux représentants de l'IPSF au sein du groupe de travail commun du 3e Symposium Mondial des Étudiants en Santé 2009 (WHSS) L'exécutif de l'IPSF a sélectionné 2 nouveaux représentants du groupe de travail commun pour le 3ème WHSS qui aura lieu en 2009. Ce sont Mette Lykke Rathje (SOP, Danemark) et Kalman Wijaya (HMF-ITB Bandung, Indonésie). Mette est étudiante en 5ème année de pharmacie à l'Université de Copenhague au Danemark. Elle est Contact Person pour l'IPSF au sein de son organisation et s'occupe actuellement de la coordination locale des projets de collaboration entre étudiants en pharmacie et médecine. Kalman est étudiant en 4ème année à l'institut technologique de Bandung en Indonésie. Il a été le IPSF Contact Person pour l'HMF-ITB et est actuellement le responsable des projets régionaux pour l'office régional Asie-Pacifique d'IPSF (APRO) et le représentant d'IPSF pour le projet P-carré en collaboration avec la Fédération Internationale des Étudiants en Médecine (IFMSA).

D'autres représentants au JWG seront sélectionnés par d'autres organisations internationales d'étudiants en santé, en particulier des domaines de pharmacie, de médecine, de sciences infirmières et de médecine dentaire. Le 3ème World-HSS sera organisé en novembre 2009, la ville d'Alexandrie, en Egypte a été sélectionné pour l'organiser.

OMS et IPSF : Déclaration conjointe sur le contrôle du tabagisme.

L'organisation mondiale pour la santé (OMS) et l'IPSF ont signé une déclaration conjointe sur le contrôle du tabagisme lors de la journée mondiale sans tabac qui a eu lieu le 31 mai 2007. En se basant sur les statistiques de l'OMS, le tabagisme est la seconde plus importante cause de décès dans le monde. Ainsi, l'IPSF et l'OMS reconnaissent la nécessité d'une réponse dynamique et News Bulletin Issue 38 July 2008

OMS et IPSF : Déclaration conjointe sur le contrôle du tabagisme. immédiate à l'épidémie qu'est le tabagisme afin de protéger la santé publique. Cette déclaration conjointe marque l'engagement actif de l'IPSF dans la lutte contre le tabagisme en tant que futurs professionnels de santé. Cela est également cohérent avec les précédentes activités de l'IPSF pour promouvoir une culture sans tabac et tout ce qui peut améliorer la santé publique.

Cette déclaration recommande à toutes les organisations membres de l'IPSF de poursuivre les actions pour contrôler le tabagisme, ce qui inclut : 1) la réduction du fardeau global globale des maladies et morts causées pas la consommation de tabac, 2) Soutien des environnements 100% non-fumeur pour protéger du tabagisme passif.

3) Promotion du rôle des pharmaciens et étudiants en pharmacie dans le combat contre le tabagisme.

4) Promotion de la journée mondiale sans tabac.

5) Faciliter la collaboration entre les professionnels de santé pour tout ce qui touche la cessation tabagique et l'instauration de campagnes de santé publique promouvant

les lieux non-fumeurs 6) Quantification de la contribution des membres d'IPSF dans la création d'un futur sans tabac à travers la déclaration de l'engagement sur le contrôle du tabagisme.

La déclaration de l'IPSF sur l'engagement pour le contrôle du tabagisme créera un système avec trois niveaux d'étoiles (Bronze, argent et or) qui mettra en relief le résultat obtenu par chaque organisation membre de l'IPSF dans le contrôle du tabagisme. Les étoiles seront obtenues en se basant sur les activités des membres en lien avec la promotion d'une culture anti-tabagisme telle que la participation à la journée mondiale sans tabac de même qu'en ayant des facultés de pharmacie se déclarant comme non-fumeur. Une liste des associations membres de l'IPSF avec la description de leurs activités liées à la cessation tabagique sera disponible sur le site internet de l'IPSF après avoir reçu et évalué les rapports des membres.

3ème Forum Global de l'UNESCO sur l'Assurance Qualité, l'Accréditation et la Reconnaissance de Qualifications Internationales Mon nom est Nomvula Mabuza et je suis un étudiant en 3ème année de pharmacie à l'Université de Rhodes en Afrique du Sud. Les 12 et 13 septembre 2007, j'ai représenté l'IPSF en tant que reporter-étudiant au 3ème Forum International sur l'assurance qualité au niveau International, l'accréditation et la reconnaissance de qualification de l'UNESCO (United Nations Educationnal, Scientific and Cultural Organization) à Dar-EsSalaam enTanzanie. Mon rôle en tant qu'étudiant reporter a été d'enregistrer l'évolution des ateliers d'étudiants et d'en faire des rapports de synthèse aux autres participants du forum. Ce qui peut paraître une tâche compliquée a été rendue plus facile grâce à l'aide de Zhining Goh (IPSF Chairperson of Educational and practice 2006-2007),de mon conférencier Billy Futter avant l'évènement, de même que grâce à Tana Wuliji (Coordinatrice des projets FIP) et Liliana Simionescu (UNESCO) durant la conférence.

Plus de 150 personnes de tous les horizons de l'enseignement supérieur ont participé à ce forum. Le programme était découpé en 5 sections, l'une d'elle était l'atelier des thématiques parallèles où j'ai passé la plupart de mon temps. L'atelier des étudiants était l'un des trois auxquels participaient les intervenants du milieu de l'éducation international et de l'éducation à distance de même que des enseignants de l'éducation supérieure. Les ateliers se sont étalés sur deux jours.

Le premier jour, l'accent a été mis sur la reconnaissance et la place de l'enseignement supérieure. Le but de l'atelier était d'identifier les zones dans lesquelles l'UNESCO peut contribuer à fournir des ressources dont les étudiants bénéficient directement en identifiant les cours de qualité et faciliter la reconnaissance de leurs qualifications. Un certain nombre d'organisations étudiantes ont présenté les structures organisationnelles et la manière dont ils s'organisent pour le bénéfice de leurs membres. Le système intéressant mis en avant était l'apprentissage par l'expérience. Toutes les organisations étaient d'accord que l'incorporation de l'expérience dans le système d'éducation était un moyen sûr de fournir une éducation de qualité. l'expérience acquise lors de leur implications associatives était considérée comme étant de l'ordre extrascolaire et donc non reconnue par les institutions académiques comme faisant partie de leur qualification.

Le 2ème jours était axé sur la provision de qualité et la fraude, avec des présentations sur les moyens existants dans cette zone et les problèmes telles que les fausses institutions. La principale idée ressortant de cet atelier fut que les étudiants devraient participer à la certification des enseignements qu'ils suivent, en particulier l'évaluation des conférenciers sans peur d'intimidation des personnes ainsi évaluées. Il a aussi été suggéré de dresser une liste de toutes les institutions légales, ce qui serait fort utile à tout étudiant lors de son choix d'institution d'enseignement supérieur.

Les discussions informelles entre les organisations étudiantes présentes étaient encore plus intéressantes. Les corps étudiants présents étaient l'IFMSA (Fédération Internationale des Associations d'Étudiants en Médecine, l'IAAS(Association Internationale des étudiants en Agriculture, l'ASA(Association des Étudiants Asiatiques), la JADE(Confédération Européenne des Entreprises Juniors) et bien d'autres. C'est lors de ces discussions que j'ai rencontré les autres représentants étudiants et les discussions qui ont suivis ont abouti à des solutions

qualité. Les débats thématiques étaient la preuve qu'il y a beaucoup de travail à faire avant d'atteindre le « système d'éducation supérieure idéal ». Mais l'enthousiasme des participants était la preuve vivante que l'éducation supérieure tente de former des diplômés de bonne qualité.

Le forum était excitant car il était composé de personnes passionnées par l'accès à une éducation supérieure de meilleure

Après le Forum, les participants avaient l'opportunité de voir la ville de Dar-Es-Salaam et le premier arrêt était la journée portes ouvertes de l'Université de Tanzanie. D'autres lieux furent visités comme le marché local et les villages. Malheureusement je n'ai pas pu finir la visite car je devais prendre mon avion pour rentrer en Afrique du Sud. C'était excitant de voir comment deux pays africains peuvent à la fois être similaires tout en étant autant différents.

Merci à l'IPSF de m'avoir donné cette opportunité. J'espère que les résultats de ce forum seront d'une grande utilité pour ceux qui en ont le plus besoin : les étudiants.

P2, une nouvelle voie pour la santé globale ?

Qu'est-ce-que P-carré (P²) ? P2 carré signifie « médecin(ou praticien) x pharmacien = P² ». L'histoire de P² commença lorsque l'IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Association) et l'IPSF (International Pharmaceutical Students Association) signèrent un Mémorandum d'entente (MoU) à la réunion d'automne de l'IFMSA à Zlatibor en Serbie. Un des aspects abordés dans ce MoU est de viser, en permanence, à faire la promotion des soins au sein d'une équipe multidisciplinaire, de promouvoir l'éducation pour la santé et la recherche en collaboration en encourageant celle-ci au niveau local dans le cadre de projets de santé publique de même qu'en favorisant les échanges étudiants et autres initiatives.

Il y a 2 mois, chaque organisation(IFMSA/IPSF) a choisi 3 2 personnes pour les représenter au sein de P .

De plus, P² a été lancé lors d'un atelier APRO pendant le 6ème APPS au Népal (Asia-Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium). P² a également été un des sujets d'ateliers lors du congrès mondial IPSF à Taiwan de même que lors de la réunion d'aout d'IFMSA à Londres.

Par le passé, le rôle du pharmacien a été discuté de façon exhaustive par l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) et les autres intervenants du domaine. Des consultations rigoureuses entre l'OMS et la Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique(FIP) ont mené à l'adoption du rôle du pharmacien au sein de la Stratégie Révisée des Médicaments de l'OMS de même qu'à un projet-concept de « pharmacien-septétoiles » : professionnel de la santé, preneur de décision, communicateur, leader, gérant, en apprentissage tout au long de la vie et enseignant.

Afin d'étayer ceci, la réforme de l'éducation pharmaceutique se retrouve maintenant au cœur de l'agenda des soins de santé afin de mieux questionner les normes d'une éducation pharmaceutique de qualité, une invitation à aborder l'impact sur la main-d'œuvre et les changements de rôle dans la pratique. Des changements de l'éducation pharmaceutique sont à prévoir afin d'être à la hauteur des attentes contemporaines des carrières à venir, formant ainsi des diplômés compétents avec les connaissances et les aptitudes répondant aux besoins des services de santé.

La promotion des soins pharmaceutiques orientés vers le service et celle d'une utilisation rationnelle des médicaments sont de plus en plus faites au sein des lignes directrices des services de soins de santé de même que dans la description des besoins de santé. En Septembre 2006, la première table ronde globale de la FIP sur l'éducation pharmaceutique s'est tenue à Salvador de Bahia, Brésil, afin de discuter du développement d'une vision globale en Éducation Pharmaceutique. Objectifs du Groupe de travail et Plan d'Action Le groupe de travail Éducation Pharmaceutique vise à développer un cadre de travail de collaboration globale afin de quantifier la taille de main-d'œuvre pharmaceutique nécessaire, développer des modèles pour construire des outils de formation pour la mise-à-niveau de l'Éducation pharmaceutique et des formations en fournissant le support technique au niveau national, en action et en ressources humaines. L'équipe de travail est formée d'experts reconnus dans le domaine de l'éducation et de la pharmacie. Le groupe consultatif de l'équipe de travail est tenu de superviser l'implantation du Plan d'action et monitorer les progrès. Des équipes de projets se divisent en trois grands axes de travail : assurance qualité, les moyens disponibles au niveau académique et institutionnel ainsi que la compétence et la vision. Cette répartition assurera la diffusion par une approche consultative et participative basée sur les preuves.

Le Plan d'action facilitera le développement d'un système d'éducation optimal par l'entremise d'un cycle qui cherchera prioritairement à évaluer et comprendre les besoins locaux.

Orientés selon les besoins, les services pourront donc être définis et la formation des professionnels de la santé sera basée sur ces besoins afin de préparer une relève compétente. Tout ceci vise à composer avec des ressources humaines en santé tout en aidant à faire le meilleur avec la ressource disponible, améliorant les résultats en santé et renforçant les systèmes de santé.

Un Plan d'Action en Éducation Pharmaceutique 2008-2010 en 3 phases a été proposé et une vaste consultation aura lieu à chaque année afin de nourrir le développement de chaque phase.

Les organisations nationales membres de l'IPSF peuvent faire beaucoup pour 2 encourager la participation de leurs universités, corps professionnels et autres dans le processus du Plan d'Action aussi bien qu'en faisant passer le message. Pharmacy Students' Council (PSC) Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Rabat-Morocco Usually, the PSC starts its activities with the beginning of the academic year, an open day for new pharmacy students, this year we have held it on October 25, 2007. During this day we presented the IPSF carefully to all the students and Professors in attendance. PSC's accession to the federation was warmly welcomed.

This event is followed by a general assembly, which prepares for elections to renew the council. We continue our activities in February, after the first semester examinations, according to the following schedule: ü

As for the Student Exchange Program, we propose that it be in the form of an exchange of trainees in a pharmacy during 3 months in pharmaceutical industry, biology and pharmacy with a French-speaking country of preference.

We are new in the federation and we hope that it helps us, encourage us to participate in its activities and propose us other activities that we can do locally and that may affect the pharmacy students in Morocco, in Africa and the World. The PSC wishes to be present in the annual congress of the IPSF. Good luck and good continuation to all students in pharmacy in the world.

This year we want to organize this event in cooperation with the IPSF, and we hope that the federation continues to provide us

HMF Ars Praeparandi ITB HIV/AIDS Campaign 2007 Indonesia is on its edge now, based on the data issued by the Association of Indonesian Medical Doctors (Ikatan Dokter Indonesia). The last year of 2006 became the year when Indonesia's rate of new HIV infected persons increased by more than 100%. Now HIV infected people in Indonesia number approximately 200,000 out of a total 200 million citizens. It is a saddening fact indeed, but this does not mean that the pharmaceutical students of Indonesia are sitting ducks simply facing the facts.

This year, Indonesia's national theme for the AIDS campaign was “National Condom Week 2007,” held from 1-8 December 2007. The idea was that the government is trying to educate Indonesia's people that using condoms is not at all taboo, and that condoms are an effective way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS. HMF Ars Praeparandi ITB, carried out a series of fun events for the campaign based on the national and global guidelines, including

this year's global theme of leadership.

HIV/AIDS Campaign Week The first campaign was a collaboration with the respectful Art Students of ITB. This year, we went on a Sunday parade in our nd. With a giant catfish as hometown of Bandung, on December 2nd a mascot representing the deep philosophy of leadership, the parade was a hit. Our center of activity was in the Gasibu Public Park, right in front of the landmark building of Gedung Sate, the East Java's provincial government office. Brochures and the special customary red ribbons were distributed to people of Bandung along the parade route. th was condom distribution The second campaign on December 6th in one of Bandung's hottest clubs, the Amare Lounge. In another collaboration with Spinner Management, a DJ recording label in Indonesia, the automotive themed party, titled “Wheel Machine,” became even more lively when we distributed 500 condoms, educational brochures, and stickers to the partygoers. th was a seminar held in The third campaign on December 8th collaboration with Himpunan Konselor HIV/AIDS (HiKHA) Jabar, which is a local NGO specialized in HIV/AIDS counseling. There was a brief education session about HIV/AIDS hoaxes and facts, followed by a free counseling session and HIV blood test.

And with that last event, came the conclusion of HMF Ars Praeparandi ITB's HIV/AIDS campaign of 2007. We would like to thank DKT Indonesia for their support and donation of campaign materials. See you in 2008!

The East African Medical and Pharmaceutical Students International Conference on The Role of Future Health Care Professionals in Community-Based Aids Control This conference was organized by Pharmacy and Medical students in the National University of Rwanda (NUR), which th December 2007. The conference provided a forum for the discussion of issues and challenges encountered by HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns in East Africa Countries and the role of pharmacy and medical students as future health professionals have to play in that whole process in order to maximize the effort.

Costa Rica: Set Up a National Association As a friend would say, “all begins with the first step” that is the way to summarize the work we have done in the last few months.

All started in May 2007, when the Pan American Regional Symposium have took place in Costa Rica at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), the college where I study. This Symposium was organized by a group of pharmacy students of the UCR called GrupoFarma, in collaboration with the National Center of Medicaments (CIMED), Iberoamerican Pharmaceutics Organization (OFIL) and the International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation (IPSF).

During the Symposium I had the chance to meet some people in IPSF and I had the opportunity to talk with Karen McGill about a possible incorporation of Costa Rica into IPSF. She had explained that a national federation covering all of our universities and joining IPSF as one organization was the best option.

But the road to creating a national federation wasn't easy, because in the past we had little communication between the students of the different colleges and each university was practically isolated from the rest.

However, during the Symposium, all universities (UCIMED, UCR, UIA and UNIBE) had representation and this allowed an approach between students. So, we decided to have a little meeting with Karen McGill and Neveen Abdelghani, where they explained to us a little more about what IPSF does and the application procedure for membership candidature. They told us that to incorporate this year we should have everything ready by June 2007, but that was too soon given our current situation.

Due to this, it was agreed that preparing the details of the creation of this new Federation was the best thing to do this year. In that way, we did not have to rush with our application to IPSF and we could wait for the 2008 World Congress in 22 International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

Romania. This let us work with less pressure and allowed us to reevaluate our objectives: we should work first locally, looking for the union and cooperation between the pharmacy students in our country.

Since the beginning of the Project we tried to keep our Deans informed, because they played an important supportive role and because it was very important that they know about the project to maintain a better relationship and to facilitate reciprocal collaboration.

Next, the Deans were informed of our next step: to define the statutes of the Federation. For this purpose, we compared the existing individual associations, observed their differences and similarities, and then proceeded to complement them, all the while, carefully considering the opinion of all associations and letting all participate and take part in the decisions.

Later, with our drafts of the statutes, we decided to make a short presentation of the project at the “Colegio de Farmacéuticos de Costa Rica (Colfar),” an organization that controls the pharmaceutical profession in the entire country. All pharmaceutical entities must be incorporated into Colfar to legally practice their profession.

They liked the idea of a national federation and proposed that in the near future, a student could assist at the executive board reunions when they discussed issues concerning the students.

This student would work as a communication channel between Colfar and the students. Also we asked them for sponsorship of our first event and after a couple of days, they called us and said that they could offer the installations and beverages for our first assembly. th November 2007, we presented the executive board This past 6th and we had the first “Federación Costarricense de Estudiantes de Farmacia (FECOEF)” General Assembly. The event was very well attended and we talked to the pharmacy students about the goals of our Federation, promoted IPSF, and encouraged the

students to approach the Federation and take part in the commissions.

When we finished the presentation, the students had the chance to meet and share experiences with students from other universities during the refreshment period. This was significant progress toward our main goal: to achieve the union between the pharmacy students.

Nowadays, we are working in our plans for the next year and arranging our legal paperwork. We have still a lot to do, but the important thing is that we have made our first big step. I hope that students who read this and want to create something

similar in their country can realize with our experience that, despite the difficulty in organizing a project of this magnitude, it is easier when you try, you persist, and you look for enthusiastic people who are disposed to work as a team. I hope to see you at the 2008 World Congress in Romania!

Results of Moving On I project published in Pharmacy Education Moving On is a series of original, questionnaire-based research projects on issues relevant to the profession and education that IPSF conducts on an international scale, in collaboration with the School of Pharmacy, University of London. The Moving On I was the first project of the series and it focused on academic mobility that refers to the exchange of knowledge and skills through the international exchange of academics. Such exchange is vital in the generation of novel ideas, practices and cultural diversity in order to promote positive changes in pharmacy education.

Pharmacy education has great influence on professional development and the role of a pharmacist and thus factors that can be utilised to enhance it should be identified. It was over 150 academics from 24 countries that participated in this study in 2002-03.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD), perceived greater potential knowledge gain from international exchanges and faced lower language barriers than academics who had not worked abroad. Study could not define whether these differences were motivating factors to go abroad or were they results of working abroad. If it is former academics could be encouraged to go abroad by emphasising benefits of professional development and if it is latter the potential knowledge gain should be highlighted.

Moving On II is the second of IPSF's series of original research projects and studies the quality of pharmacy education worldwide in relation to the student learning experience. It is a landmark global study, the largest known of its type and the first to make international comparisons in the field of pharmacy education. It is conducted in close collaboration with from the School of Pharmacy, University of London. th Development of the project started at the 49th IPSF Congress in Singapore, 2003 and data collection recently ended in November 2007 after 30 months. The study database currently contains about 10 000 responses from 30 countries - Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Iceland, India, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan (China), The Netherlands, UK and USA. Data submission is still pending from Egypt and South Africa. The project questionnaire has been translated and is now available in eight languages – English, Chinese, Czech, German, Japanese, Serbian, Spanish and Catalan.

The project results, in part or whole, has been presented at numerous conferences around the world, including IPSF and International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) congresses. In March 2008, IPSF, the School of Pharmacy and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Division of Higher Education will jointly present a nd policy-making paper at the 52nd Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) in New York City, USA. The paper will focus on quality assurance and educational equity and be based on findings of the Moving On II project. Final analysis and results publications are in progress.

Moving On III Update – 20+ Countries to Join in Next Round of International Study Over 20 countries have signed up to participate in the next round of the Moving On III (MO III) study, an original research initiative that seeks to find out more about the motivations that drive the intention to migrate. Migration of the highly skilled is a topical issue with many debates centred on a particular phenomenon where a disproportionate level of the workforce migrates abroad, commonly described as ”brain drain”. With 57 countries in the world classified as having a health workforce crisis, the ”brain drain” poses a great concern. But is this concern rightly placed or is there more behind it? Little research has been

done thus far to fully understand why people decide to migrate whilst broad generalisations are made by the public, policy makers and key influential groups. It is with this context that the MO III project started in 2005.

MO III is the first project of its kind. It surveys final year pharmacy students to examine if they want to migrate and their attitudes towards their home country and perception of opportunities abroad. The pilot study involved nine countries in 2006 with data collected in Australia, Bangladesh, Croatia,

Moving On II – Quality of Education and the Student Learning Experience

800 responses were received and the data was analysed to show that there were three key drivers to the intention to migrate which are the attitudes towards the socio-political environment, status of the profession and practice environment and perception of opportunities to further develop professionally and financially abroad. One key finding which differs to other studies is that money is not a stand-alone motivator for migration. The other key finding is that the environment determines attitudes which then influence the decision to migrate. An interpretation of this is that migration is not just happening because people think 'the grass is greener on the other side', but because there are local factors that influence it. If greater focus was put in towards improving the work environment, career prospects and even social and political stability in countries, greater gains in workforce retention and development could be achieved rather than fixating on migration itself and focusing on how to stop people migrating. These significant findings have been presented at conferences and workshops to further deepen understanding of this issue.

So where is the MO III project now? The survey tool has been revised and is in the final stages of review. We are very pleased

to have the input of experts from key organisations such as World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Organization for Migration, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP= as well as researchers and advisors. The MO III research group with its active network of local and national research coordinators from every region in the world is ready to start collecting data from February with the hope of the results being ready by mid-2008.

This study has already excited a huge amount of interest from pharmacists, other health professionals, researchers, policy makers, and international organisations and is a great example of students having their voices heard and making a difference. It has been an honour to work with the dedicated MO III Research Group, and the partners in this initiative - IPSF, FIP and School of Pharmacy, University of London and I greatly look forward to updating you with more progress soon. More hard work lies ahead and I'm sure that the next phase of MO III will only add to the growing success of the Moving On Projects.

Patient Counselling Event at The 53 IPSF Congress The annual Patient Counselling Event (PCE) was held last rd August at the 53rd IPSF Congress in Taiwan. Participants from around the globe had the chance to demonstrate their communication skills.

Finalists from the beginner and advanced levels included delegates from Australia, Canada, rd IPSF Congress Malawi, and Taiwan. The winners for the 53rd PCE were both Canadians, Victoria Su for the Advanced Level and myself for the Beginner Level.

PCE at the IPSF Congress is completed in two rounds, a closeddoor preliminary round and an open-door final round. In the final round, delegates of the Congress are able to watch the finalist counsel on stage. I have never had so many people watch my counselling session and this has definitely been an eye-opener for me. Although speaking on stage is rather nerve-racking, it has also been quite helpful, especially being critiqued by pharmacists from around the world. By participating in an open PCE, I was able to observe other useful counselling techniques to communicate with patients.

Ultimately, it has helped me incorporate effective counselling methods into my own routine.

I believe the PCE is a wonderful opportunity for all current and future pharmacists to expand their counselling skills. It is important to be empathic with patients and skills like this is only learned with constant practice. Effective counselling skills are definitely important in developing as a healthcare professional.

As the current IPSF PCE Coordinator, my goal is to allow as many delegates as possible to participate for this year's PCE in Romania and also to develop scenarios that focus on effective counselling skills. I highly encourage all delegates to participate in PCE as I feel this would be a valuable experience and a great opportunity to learn from judges of the competition, as many of them are practicing pharmacists; therefore, they know how to communicate effectively with their patients.

Indonesian National Patient Counseling Event 2007 Indonesia has moved one step further in developing its pharmacy field toward patient-care focused service. HMF 'Ars Praeparandi' ITB has organized the first Indonesian National Patient Counselling Event (PCE)! The event was titled 'PCE 2007: A National Event'. The enthusiasm from Indonesian students was beyond expectation for there was no competition like this before in Indonesia. In this first competition, 7 universities in Indonesia participated in this event with total competition participants of 24. There was also a one-day patient counseling workshop that was attended by 215 students from these 7 universities. There were 4 speakers who elaborated good practice of patient counselling from 4 aspects: p a t i e n t p s y c h o l o g y, e f f e c t i v e c o m m u n i c a t i o n , pharmacotherapy, and good counselling practice. The event took place on the campus of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) from 10-11 November 2007.

As for the result, the IPSF newcomers, UGM and Universitas Sanata Dharma took the 2nd nd and 3rd rd winner place, with no

space left for the host, ITB, as the 1st place was taken by Universitas Padjadjaran. Congratulations to all!

Picking the right actor is very crucial, and also having the right case to be delivered by them. This is the core of the PCE competition. Consultation with experts from the clinical and community pharmacy practitioners could be a way to make sure we have the right case at the right level for every participant.

The local university club HMF 'Ars Praeparandi' ITB will annually hold this national PCE. However, since the national association ISMAFARSI Indonesia has joined IPSF in the 53rd IPSF Congress in 2007 as a Full Member representing most Indonesian pharmacy students, hopefully in the coming years the Indonesian National PCE will be held at a different university each year.

World Diabetes Day in Jordan

Jordan Pharmaceutical Students' Association (JPSA) held its first campaign, "the Diabetes awareness campaign" and pharmacy students put hands together to increase the knowledge and raise awareness in the community on this widespread chronic illness. Ministry of Health statistical report (2006) showed that the prevalence of diabetes in Jordan is 14%, which is considered high as compared to other countries.

From this point of view, we started our campaign and did our best to make it simple but effective. We conducted two major health education campaigns including diabetes counselling in two of the most crowded malls in Amman, the capital of Jordan.

It was distributed 2000 copies diabetes educational booklets designed by members of JPSA. Students also explained to public risk factors of the disease, how to prevent it, and how to deal with a diabetic patient.

Students also conducted an interactive session in a secondary school, as it is important to increase the knowledge of

adolescents on early detection, prevention and management of the disease. We believe that we have to start increase the diabetes awareness of young people. It has been noticed over the past years the increase in type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents for example because of the obesity., So, we revived the saying "no child should die of diabetes".

We spent a day in one of the universities in Jordan where students had an informative session on how to counsel a diabetic patient and also diabetes booklets were distributed. This was followed by a presentation about JPSA and IPSF. It was a great experience for all members of the association, as they felt how much people were enthusiastic and eager to know more about the disease. On the other hand, the students were proud of the work that was done.

I hope that within the coming years JPSA will organize bigger campaigns and try to help diabetic patients to improve their life.

A New Public Health Campaign: Counterfeit Medicines Counterfeit medicines have been combatted since early 2006 by International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce (IMPACT). IMPACT was launched by World Health Organization (WHO) and aims to eventually put a stop to counterfeiting medicines. IMPACT is a partnership comprised of all the major anti-counterfeiting players, such as non-governmental organizations, pharmaceutical manufacturers and regulatory authorities.

Hence, also IPSF has launched a new public health campaign on counterfeit medicines. Substandard and counterfeit medicines are a rapidly growing and serious concern to public health. A counterfeit medicine is deliberately and fraudulently mislabeled with respect to identity and/or source. Forging can apply to both branded and generic products and counterfeit medicines may include products with the correct ingredients or with the wrong ingredients, which can be toxic, without active ingredients, with insufficient active ingredients or with fake packaging. However, the appearance of a counterfeit medicine usually mimics that of the original one.

The campaign is targeted to healthcare students and its purpose is to create an educational th IPSF toolkit on counterfeit medicines to be launched in 54th Congress in Romania. The main goal is to provide healthcare students with sufficient awareness and knowledge required to effectively combat forged medicines at the grassroots level in the future. The project will focus on providing students with information on the threats of counterfeit and substandard medicines to worldwide public health and hence get them committed in the combat against these products. It is especially important to raise awareness in those parts of the world where the problem is most prevalent, such as certain parts of South East Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Information will be distributed through a website, CD-ROM, materials for presentations and lectures and workshops at IPSF events. The basic materials will be available in English, French and Spanish.

Nevertheless, the internet has become the primary tool for criminal organizations to advertise and conduct sales of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and hence the forgeries are distributed through illegal online pharmacies. On the other hand, in many countries people do not have adequate

access to essential medicines due to the lack of human and financial resources. This can lead to the use of counterfeit or substandard medicines especially for potentially lethal conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, as forgeries usually offer cheaper alternatives to original medicines.

injecting drugs use. Eastern Europe is also considered to be the fastest growing arm of the global HIV epidemic, with the worse effects in Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic states, such as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

No one could have possibly imagined how the epidemic could have spread to such frightening proportions when AIDS first emerged. It is discouraging to see these global numbers of people infected, despite the fact that effective prevention strategies already exist. In fact, the knowledge of safe sex and HIV prevention still remains low in many countries, as well as the perception of personal susceptibility.

There was an article that caught my attention in October 26's publication of The Nation in India. The article was titled “Mother HIV +, court asks daughter if she wants her”. Upon further reading, I learnt that the daughter was only nine years old, but the most shocking part is that the court has denied the mother's human rights on the basis of the discriminatory ground that she's HIV positive.

When addressing such challenges such as discrimination and poor HIV knowledge, it is important to know your epidemic.

In Africa, there are 10 countries where more than 10% of the adult population aged 15-49 is infected with HIV. In four countries along the southern cone of the continent, at least 20% of the population is living with HIV. In Asia, although the epidemic is relatively recent in origin, there is an even greater diversity of the AIDS epidemic compared to Africa. In India alone, there is an estimated 2-3.1 million people infected with the virus, 650,000 in China and 580,000 in Thailand. With the continual growth of sex trade, the use of illicit drugs, migration and mobility across borders, there is a high potential for growth for the epidemic.

In the Caribbean, the key factor driving the worse of the epidemics is unprotected sexual intercourse.

In Latin America, approximately 1.7 million people are living with the virus. The highest rates of infection in these countries are accredited to men who have sex with men and second highest rates attributed to female sex workers.

In Western Europe, as well as the United States, heterosexual sex is the primary cause of newly diagnosed infections, however, the rate of new incidences of the epidemic have been geographically varied in Western Europe.

In Central Europe, the largest number of newly infected HIV cases is found in pediatric patients.

So what is being done to halt this epidemic?

During the summer 2006 United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, United Nations member States agreed to work towards the goal of “universal access to comprehensive prevention programmes, treatment, care and support” by 2010. The goal called for an increase in global response through the WHO/UNAIDS “3 by 5” initiative. On World AIDS Day 2003, WHO and UNAIDS released this detail strategic plan to distribute antiretroviral treatment to 3 million people in 50 developing countries by the end of 2005. The idea is to emphasize effective public health initiatives and the need for simple and standard approaches to healthcare in many low income settings.

How can you impact this disease?

As pharmacy students, we are future health professionals who capable of empowering the public with a greater knowledge about HIV and taking action ourselves by incorporating work with pharmacists, local healthcare facilities and other healthcare professionals. We can educate those who are not infected on how to protect themselves against HIV and teach those who are infected on how to live with the virus. AIDS is a preventable disease. It is simply not enough to provide factual information, but we must also encourage people to negotiate for safe and responsible sexual relationship, as well as provide better access to condoms for those who choose to have sex.

It is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. People need to challenge the myths and misconceptions about human sexuality that translate into dangerous sexual practices. The theme this year is “Stop AIDS; Keep the Promise Leadership.”

In most cases, we have too many high sounding words with too few actions that correspond with them. It's time to take action and “keep the promise.”

We have nine Student Exchange Committee (SEC) members who are in charge of many SEP projects, such as Big sister project, new Helping hand project introducing IPSF prospect members to the SEP basics, SEP Grant, collecting articles for newsletters as well as working on new SEP database, promotional materials and many more.

Our Student Exchange Programme (SEP) experience was fantastic! We were placed at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) together and lived in a beautiful house with our host, Tessa, a pharmacy student at the university. We had the opportunity to visit the toxicology lab, the paediatric pharmacy, nuclear medicine, production, distribution and the biopharmacy & pharmaceutical technology departments. In all, we had a pretty holistic experience of the hospital pharmacy in just four short weeks!

What made our SEP most enjoyable was the hospitality of the Dutch people Tessa and her collegues, Prof. Uges at UMCG, students of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Pharmaceutische Studenten Vereniging (KNSPV) and colleagues at the hospital who took really good care of us and strived to let us try everything that was 'typically Dutch'! Lastly, we had reunions with a few familiar faces throughout our trip Job and Thanh whom we met at the IPSF Congress in Cairns, Gwylim, Nicole and Henrik (on our post-SEP tour in Germany) who were in Singapore for SEP the previous year!

What is it like to be a host Currently, I am the representative of the regional hospital pharmacy in the Czech Republic in a town called Opava. I have been taking care of foreign SEP students during summer holidays due to my similar experience from my student years. At that time, it was the year 1978, Czech students had a hard possition when wanted to travel and gain further knowledge in the pharmaceutical field. Our faculty used to allow only one or two students to go abroad and there was no financial support from anybody at that time. However, I was very lucky to be chosen and sent to IPSF-SEP to the Dutch pharmacy that was situated close to the city of Eindhoven. Spending the month there, gaining a great amount of the experience and realizing

changes in the pharmaceutical field, the environment, meeting new people, traveling and seeing an astonishing beauty of nature of The Netherlands - all of this left an unforgettable memory that can never be forgotten.

Couple a years ago, the travelling opportunities opened more widely to us and that was the time I strongly felt that I needed to contribute in another dimension - to become a host and re-pay the experience I could get to other foreign students interested to come to the Czech Republic. Our pharmacy hosted more than 10 students from all the corners of Europe (Finland, Spain, Portugal, Poland, UK) so far. On one hand Opava is little, but it has glorious nature around our town and surrounding area, castles and mountains are all very beautiful and attractive. During their stay, we usually make a great friendship and I am again back in days of my training in Eidhoven as it was yesterday.

Pharmacy in the Czech Republic has a really long history and tradition. In hospitals here, you may still find plenty of galenic preparations eg. ointments, suppositoria, vaginal globules and that is very interesting for many students because they can learn this from literature only but never train this in real.

However, they can also contribute to new trends of pharmaceutical preparations such as preparing of Total parenteral nutrition, sterile compounds or reconstitution of cytotoxics. In the hospital, they can also observe clinical pharmacy at the clinical departments and laboratories. The only problem could be the language barrier, therefore we usually

What is It Like to Be Far Far Away on SEP Armenia, a new country in last year in Student Exchange Programme (SEP) and nobody was excited to go there for an experience, except a friend of mine and me. To be honest, I was a bit worried not only because it is not a very touristic place as we heard before leaving Egypt. The officer at the Russian airport also asked us: “Why Armenia?? Nothing to do there“, when we replied that we are going for training, he nod his head.

But guess what - the less you expect the more fun you get.

Frankly speaking, it was the most amazing experience I have ever had in my life. Not only because Armenia an extremely beautiful country with many beautiful natural sights, but also people are very welcoming and caring.

Our Armenian Student Exchange Officer (SEO), Karen Dilbaryan did his best to make us comfortable, he was with us all the time and he provided us a place in community as well as hospital pharmacy in which I really gained a lot of it. It was a perfect exchange, a safe country regardless what I heard before. In addition, I gained a lot of experience and good friendships that will last forever.

One last thing I would like to add is: Do not miss this chance! Go for an exchange in any country of the world, no matter what,

Starting SEP in Jordan!

When Jordan Pharmaceutical Students Association (JPSA) was founded on May 2007, one of the many activities that IPSF allowed its associations to get involved in was Student Exchange Programme (SEP) and we knew that we had to be apart of the SEP family for so many reasons! Most importantly, there was the fact that SEP provides pharmacy students around the world with opportunities to explore, work and train in many wonderful countries!

Getting involved in SEP was not hard at all! On the contrary, we were more than welcomed! Lots of help was always offered, and for that we have to thank the Chairperson of Student Exchange Veronika Sumpichova and Big Sister Alexandra Bartal of the Student Exchange Committee for being so patient with us all the way!

We are currently working and negotiating with many different hosts including pharmacies, industrial and research institutes to encourage them for accepting foreign students. Hoping that soon enough we will be able to provide more specific details about hosts and where students can be placed in Jordan.

What is It Like to be a LEO Dear IPSFers, My name Ferry Gunawan, I am a student in School of Pharmacy, th grade). I was a Institute Technology Bandung class 2004 (4th Local Exchange Officer (LEO) for two Student Exchange Programme (SEP) years, from 2005 until 2007. Actually this was not my first experience with getting involved with IPSF th Asiaactivities, because I was also in the committee for 5th Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium (APPS) in Bandung, Indonesia.

It was interesting for me to be a LEO because I could interact with foreign students from other countries. I could open my mind about what happens in this world also I could learn anything from them, from pharmaceutical issues to cultural aspects and many more.

My first year being LEO started like this. Doti Parameswari (at that time a Student Exchange Officer (SEO)) asked me to pick up couple of exchange students, coming from Serbia, Hungary and Spain, in Jakarta. So, I did that job and she asked me to accompany them all while they stayed in Bandung afterwards.

In my second year being a LEO, I was also picking up exchange students who were all from Serbia. In addition to this I arranged schedules for social events and it was challenging sometimes because it takes efforts to find suitable places and take care of all necessary tasks. It is also good to remember that if you have too much social programme you cannot do it all because otherwise all students would feel tired! The most unforgettable moment was when we were having farewell party at my lecturer house, a lot of memories. ,Too many moments of sadness and happiness

because we were altogether for only a month. The last day was coming sooner and sooner, and exchange students had to go back to their countries!

And now even in the third year of my studies I am getting involved with IPSF programmes even more! I have a plan to do my first exchange ever to Serbia! The place where lot of my beloved friends live. I cannot hardly wait to do that.

In conclusion, this short article is not enough to express how proud I am to be a LEO, to be a part of this exchange, and to be a member of IPSF!

Infused with this dream, I sought IPSF support and a door finally opened that would see Kenya increase participation in future events.

The educational workshops and lectures, covering a plethora of topics really encouraged me to engage in multidisciplinary teamwork and ultimately achieve better healthcare outcomes in Kenya and globally. One particular presentation on “Patient Safety” enticed me to share this content with my colleagues in Kenya and even hold a multidisciplinary forum with medical, dental and nursing students presenting similar material.

I was overwhelmed meeting and interacting with numerous flagships of students representing a spectrum of healthcare fields from all over the world. Great parties entertained and cemented friendship bonds created as we shared the experience. I enjoyed solving case studies within international multidisciplinary teams.

I received golden opportunities in meeting Contact Persons, Student Exchange Officers and IPSF Executive members who provided valuable information on improving Kenyan IPSF participation. I felt a huge responsibility representing Kenya and being one of two delegates representing Africa in the global arena for the first time. I embrace the challenge of increasing involvement in initiatives to maximise IPSF awareness in Africa

Simon Bell: How IPSF Changed My Life Good things often happen by chance. I was fortunate to have chance meeting with then IPSF President Lindsay McClure at the Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (FAPA) Congress in Sydney in 2000. Lindsay had embarked on her world tour following the 46 th IPSF Congress in El Salvador.

Lindsay told endless stories of El Salvador; lost pharmacy students wandering up active volcanoes, sipping cocktails under palm trees and all night parties on the beach. Lindsay's visit coincided with the Olympics in Sydney. We pretended to be official Olympic Games pharmacists to gain access to the Olympic Village (Lindsay was mostly just interested in eating at the athletes' all-you-can-eat McDonalds!). I'm not sure if it was Lindsay's stories of El Salvador, or perhaps just Big Mac induced delirium, but before Lindsay had finished her Thick Shake we'd already hatched plans for Australia to re-join IPSF. The following year NAPSA was re-established and re-united with IPSF at the 47 th IPSF Congress in Cairo. The Cairo congress was an unforgettable experience! Undeterred by plumbing problems in the dormitories, soaring temperatures in desert or the occasional bout of food poisoning, I became inspired. Little did I know this inspiration would develop into an addiction that spanned 6 continents, 6 IPSF World Congresses and 2 IPSF Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposiums!

While every congress and symposium was unique and special, undoubtedly the highlight was the year I spent living and working in The Hague. I'd never been the Netherlands (or the IPSF flat) before being greeted by former Secretary General Boyan Todorov at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

Boyan explained the nuances of the flat on our way from the

airport…don't worry about the rats, don't sleep on the bed in the living room (the structure had apparently become weakened following some late night antics at the last exec meeting), and don't turn on the oven! Unfortunately Katja Hakkarainen, our Chairperson of Student Exchange, forgot Boyan's last warning!

The green plumes of toxic smoke that billowed from the oven filled the IPSF flat, then the neighbourhood, and then threatened to asphyxiate all life forms within a 50km radius. This in itself was a life changing (or at least lung changing) experience! Boyan later explained he must have forgotten to clean after Diane Gal attempted to bake a cake in the oven two years earlier!

These are just some of the many funny moments during my time in IPSF. Participating in IPSF was an incredible experience! The opportunity to make new friends from all over the world was perhaps the thing I value most. I continue to be amazed and humbled by the hospitality I received in so many countries, from all the student associations I visited, and at the faculty events I attended. Many of the people I met at IPSF events continue to be among my closest friends today. While I have to admit it felt unusual not to be packing my bags last July and to be heading off to the Congress in Taiwan, I know that the indestructible IPSF spirit will live on for a long time to come!

7th Annual Pan-American Regional Symposium (PARS) The 55th Congress to Be Hold in Bali, Indonesia Hi IPSFers, It’s Juan Carlos Sánchez, the current chairperson of PARS 2008 organized in Mexico this year. As some have known, we have some problems with PARS organization owed to inopportune administration changes in Executive Committee of our University. This situation has been directly treated with the principal and, because some other events have been changed too and University administration has still the procedures for PARS organization, we can’t dispose of this money to develop the event. The reasons that expose are a better administration of money into University since they propose the junction of two events of our Faculty: PARS and a congress about “pharmacist’s profile in the world” that will be developed in September of this year, furthermore, we would obtain a better sponsorship from them.

Despite this problem, in accordance with Treasurer and Reception Committee, we don’t have any delegate registered until moment. We just received by e-mail some question about PARS logistic from USA whose were answered as soon as possible. We don’t know what happen with the information distribution of PARS to have this situation of poor participation.

In fact, in order to establish headquarter for PARS again; we will not have the time and the money necessary to newly organize an event of this magnitude. It’s too late and adventured develop one PARS with a lot of deficiencies. Mexico is trying to develop a good event for its invited people and we don’t have the support to make it. We send our apologies for everything but we need change the event in September and have a symposium with better audience and quality.

The FIP Congress - It's Where You Go Next!

As someone who has faced these situations many times in the past, I am here to offer understanding, and more importantly, an answer! After having attended four IPSF Congresses, the last of which as IPSF Executive, I can do nothing better than encourage you to continue your search of enthusiasm for pharmacy, and to find it at the FIP Congress, this year in Basel, Switzerland.

Like IPSF, each year the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) holds an annual Congress in a different city around the world. This year, the FIP Congress in Basel will focus on the theme “Reengineering pharmacy practice in a changing world”. This theme is doubly important. The 53 IPSF Congress in Taipei It was a great honor to host IPSF congress last summer in Taiwan. I hope you had gone from Taiwan with fond memories of the events and the old and new friends. The year of preparation was stressful and tiresome for us, but now that I think back it has been rather fruitful and extremely awarding. On behalf of PSA-Taiwan I would like to thank everyone who came from their homeland to share the happy moments at the congress together, and making it an unforgettable summer and a dream come true!

Here I would especially like to express my sincere thanks to the IPSF executives of 2006-07: Audrey, Juha, Gina, Annabelle, Natasa, Mohamad, Zhining, and Anna for being supportive throughout the preparation period. As many of you might know, due to inevitable reasons, holding the congress in Taiwan wasn't as easy as in previous countries. Nevertheless, the executives

supported the decisions of the General Assembly, and put effort in making the congress in Taiwan possible. Student organizations should not be deprived of the rights to participate and contribute to an international society. Without the aid and understanding of the IPSF execs, all this would not have been possible.

The crazy nights at the bars, the stunning performances at International Night, the horrifying entrance of Hello-Qwee, and Gala Night's luxurious banquet hall…… these are the scenes that compile my sweet summer memory of 2007. How about you?!

Greetings from APRO!

All five Pan-American Regional Offices have been filled this year.

With a full panel we have started to make headways in getting out IPSF information to many of the Latin American countries. Drew and Sarah have been working on expanding our contact list and translating more documents into Spanish. Stacy is working on advertising for articles from different pharmacy schools to incorporate into an annual regional newsletter. Debbie has focused on finding more creative ways in promoting our initiatives and in looking for possible venues for further monetary support. I, myself, have met with each of the other officers in order to collaborate on new ideas and am actively promoting and advertising this year's PARS. We still have a long way to go, but I believe that we have taken some very strong steps forward in the Pan-American region.

From behalf of the Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO), welcome to the world of pharmacy without borders! Since its birth in Singapore in 2001, APRO endeavours to represent pharmacy students across the Asia-Pacific in over 10 countries. Our purpose is to support and advance the aims and objectives of the Federation at the regional level.

The IPSF Regional Office is a functional extension of the IPSF Executive structured by elected pharmacy students from IPSF member countries of a specific IPSF region, forming Regional Working Group. Its mission shall be to advance and support the aims and objectives of the Federation at regional level. th

EPSA Spreading Its Mobility with The New TWINNET Project To European Pharmaceutical Students' Association (EPSA), encouragement and development of different types of mobility, is one of the main goals and most important purposes of its functioning. Therefore also this year's EPSA team has decided to work on improving the availability and quality of all EPSA Mobility projects and make sure that these projects will reach all our members.

Since the last EPSA Annual Congress, held in The Hague, The Netherlands in April 2007 big progress was done in the field of Team Mobility projects with implementation of TWINNET project or in other words TEAM MOBILITY EXCHANGE NETWORK project. This project tends to improve all the aspects of bilateral (TWIN), trilateral (THREEN) and multilateral (QUATRINO, MULTI-EXCHANGE projects) short term exchange projects, especially in their quality and also in increasing the frequency of such events being organised among different EPSA 32 International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

member associations. EPSA finds these series of events very important for students' socializing and development as well as for students' cooperation in extracurricular activities. This is exactly where such projects can contribute a lot to additional knowledge about some important pharmacy related topics that are not thoroughly discussed during faculties' curricula around faculties of pharmacy in Europe. Team Mobility Exchange project is a common expression used by EPSA and stands for any bilateral, trilateral or multilateral exchange project/event organised between two or more EPSA member associations from different European countries. The concept works so that first the association from one country either visits their foreign colleagues in their country or simply host them in their own country and the next time it is done the other way around. During such an event students are given a chance to spend approximately one week or more in another country getting acquainted with its culture, the

students' life and their customs. All in all, they spend an amazing week of fun, socializing and educational activities in another, different environment from the one they have back home. They get to meet new friends from another country but of same profession and also gain new unique experiences.

However the ultimate goal of such projects is always being mobile.

The concept of TWINNET project consists of 7 crucial points: 1. TEAM EXCHANGE (TWIN) PARTNER SEARCHING BASE …is actually a part of EPSA Database Project and will function as database and interactive virtual map of Europe where every EPSA member association will soon be able to find the most suitable Exchange partner/-s (another EPSA member association/-s) to organise a TEAM MOBILITY EXCHANGE project (e.g. TWIN, THREEN, QUATRINO) with.

2. PROVIDING HELP in OBTAINING POTENTIAL FINANCE RESOURCES …with encouraging the more active and experienced EPSA member associations that have already applied to EU grants to start cooperating and collaborating in organizing an international exchange projects (e.g.

TWIN/THREEN) with those that haven't yet succeeded to fill in an application for any European grant.

3. CHOOSING TEAM MOBILITY ANNUAL TOPIC …serves strictly for the purpose of a better quality and educational component of Team Mobility projects organised among EPSA member associations during one EPSA year. Based on the chosen TEAM MOBILITY ANNUAL TOPIC all Team Mobility Exchange projects organised during one EPSA year apply this same educational annual topic. This year's TEAM MOBILITY ANNUAL TOPIC was “Drug Abuse”. Currently we are in process of selecting the next TEAM MOBILITY ANNUAL TOPIC for the EPSA year 2008-09.

TOPIC and general description of all Team Mobility Exchange projects performed during one EPSA year (between previous EPSA Annual Congress and next EPSA Annual Congress).

5. SUBMITTING TEAM MOBILITY REPORTS …will give a brief description of an exchange project to those that are willing to organise a Team Mobility exchange project and might need some hints or advices for doing organizing it.

6. TEAM MOBILITY EXCHANGE FORUM …already exists and is in use. The FORUM is based on exchange of ideas, hints and certain advices among members of those already more experienced EPSA member associations and those that have less experience in organizing any kind of Team Mobility Exchange projects.

7. PROMOTION AMONG THE STUDENTS ...in order to introduce as many students as possible to possibilities EPSA Team Mobility Exchange projects are offering to them.

The TWINNET project has already proved to be a success and has already shown positive results in just the past few months.

Consequently many European EPSA member associations have decided to organise their first TEAM MOBILITY EXCHANGE projects just this year.

We hope this article gave you a slight overview on one of the project that EPSA has been developing during the last year in order to assist its members in organising Team Mobility Exchange projects and also in order to assure a certain level of quality of these events.

Be mobile! Mobility is important for you, your personal and your professional development! Take full advantage of it while you are still a student, because later on it might be too late! IPSF and EPSA have both plenty to offer in this field, so don't hesitate to get or to ask for more info.

Migration and Health Theme of IFMSA General Assembly, March Meeting 2008 IFMSA is the International Federation of Medical Students Associations. While we are experiencing our 57th year, our federation continues to grow; with 98 member countries across 5 continents we have almost reached the magic number of 100 national member countries. Besides playing a role in medical education IFMSA offers medical students the opportunity to go beyond the medical school and hospital and get the global health picture. But IFMSA understands that health is not improved by medical students and doctors only; many of our activities are organized in cooperation with other healthcare students as of course with IPSF as well. And we are very thankful for this joint effort.

In the IFMSA General Assembly (GA) in March the theme of our event was: 'Migration and Health'. Migration and health is an important global health issue. Migration is a multi-faceted issue due to the fact that there are many different groups of migrants, each with their own characteristics and specific health problems to face. Furthermore the migration of health care workers poses a serious problem on the health care systems of the country of origin.

At the start of the new millennium, migration the movement of people from one area to another for varying periods of time has become more pronounced than ever before. Growing political instability coupled with the fact that economical growth is stagnating in a considerable number of countries means that uprooting and displacement be it for political, environmental or economical reasons will probably continue and become an even greater global health challenge.

People have been forced to abandon their homes to escape persecution, political violence and armed conflicts throughout history amongst a number of reasons. What is different today, however, is the nature and health impact of armed conflicts.

Warfare is less about confrontations between professional armies. Rather it is about grinding struggles between military and civilians in the same country or between hostile groups of armed civilians. Increasingly wars are low-intensity internal conflicts, and they are lasting longer.

Growing poverty (both real and relative) is pushing people to move in search of work. Images of a better life in other parts of

the world are being heralded through mass media that now reaches the most remote areas and communities. Once on the move the migrants have many difficulties to face. The movement of people itself has also implications on global health both for the migrants and recipient societies. In today's globalised world, where health professionals are expected to advocate for health for all people, it is important for us to understand fully the factors which affect a person's ability to access the highest standard of health.

Global health education is integral to the mission of the IFMSA which aims to offer future physicians a comprehensive introduction to global health issues. Through our programs and opportunities, we develop culturally sensitive students of medicine, intent on influencing the trans-national inequalities that shape the health of people all over the world.

In a three day pre-GA workshop and through theme events during the GA attention were drawn to this topic. If you are interested in knowing more about Migration and Health or if you are interested to join the discussions, please contact loso@ifmsa.org.

How to Get Involved in IPSF? IPSF offers its members various opportunities to get involved in the Federation, which span everything from organising activities at a local level to working abroad in an international health organisation. Member associations of IPSF coordinate these activities at local and national levels and inform their student members about international opportunities.

Student Exchange Programme The IPSF Student Exchange Programme (SEP) is global programme criss-crossing students from all corners of the world in the name of an international pharmacy experience.

Approximately 50 different countries participate in SEP, with upwards of 500 students placed in exchanges annually. SEP runs throughout the year, with the majority exchanges taking place between May and September. The length of placements is usually from one to three months, and possible hosts include retail pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, wholesale companies, pharmaceutical industry, schools of pharmacy, government, private health agencies, and even the World Health Organization (WHO). The application process is simple and convenient you can apply right online! All students who are members of IPSF are eligible. Students can be either Individual Members or members of an IPSF Member association in their country.

Professional Development IPSF is dedicated to developing the profession and increasing public awareness and appreciation of the pharmacist as a vital member of the healthcare team. The Pharmacy Profession Awareness Campaign (PPAC) aims to increase general awareness of the pharmacy profession amongst other healthcare professionals and the public. The Patient Counselling Event (PCE) and the Clinical Skills Event (CSE) provide opportunities for pharmacy students worldwide to develop their skills and pharmacy education. IPSF provides material and resources to its members to organise these activities in their countries. These activities are also commonly organised at IPSF events.

Promoting Public Health IPSF members are eligible to participate in all public health initiatives of IPSF, and receive support, advice, informationand encouragement regarding their own public health interests, whilst increasing awareness of the pharmacist as a key player in public health. There are several main campaigns that IPSF 34 International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

encourages throughout the year. These include HIV/AIDS Awareness, Healthy Living and Diabetes, Tobacco Awareness, World Health Day, and World TB (tuberculosis) Day. IPSF holds Official Relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and through this partnership, is able to develop campaigns, publicise efforts, and receive valuable resources and opportunities for members.

Research Projects: Moving On II and Moving On III IPSF is committed to original research in the area of pharmacy education and professional satisfaction. The Moving On II research project is a global questionnaire-based study looking into pharmacy students' academic experiences and pharmacy education. The Moving On III research project studies the “Brain Drain” phenomenon by surveying final year pharmacy students' intentions and aspirations to migrate. Thousands of questionnaires for more than 20 countries have already been analysed to be published soon. New countries are welcome to join!

IPSF Events One of the simplest ways to participate is to attend one of the many events organised by IPSF. IPSF events offer educational forums, scientific symposia, poster exhibitions, workshops about IPSF activities, and of course the opportunity to socialise with peers from all over the world while becoming familiar with local culture. The IPSF Development Fund grants students from less developed countries opportunities to take part in these events by offering travel support. IPSF Positions Each year an Executive Committee of nine IPSFers is elected at the IPSF Congress. Members of various Sub-Committees, working on developing the federation and supporting its activities, are appointed. The Regional Officesof IPSF have Regional Working Groups promoting IPSF at a regional level. Each Member Country elects or appoints an IPSF Contact Person and an IPSF Student Exchange Officer who represent their national or local organisation in IPSF. These dedicated individuals work all year so that their peers may have the opportunity to expand their professional horizons. IPSF is always looking for hard working, dedicated students who would like to enthusiastically fulfill these roles.
