Dear IPSFers

It is my pleasure to write editorial for the 3rd IPSf AfRO Newsletter.

The aim of this newsletter is to share the activities of AfRO members with you because lot associations are doing a very great job in their countries and they have to be encouraged and supported.

This is newsletter it is recognition to all these associations and all their executive committee for they hard work.

I would like to think Ines IPSF Medias and publications Chairperson for helping me to design this newsletter, also I would like to Think Amel, Geoffry, Diallo and Rodney to contribute in this newsletter with the activities of their associations.

THE INTERN’S SYMPOSIUM

INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERN’S SYMPOSIUM

For the first time, IPSF AfPS has the honor to introduce a new symposium to its activities – “The Interns’ Symposium”.

The Interns’ Symposium is a new program for IPSF that is going to be presented in the First IPSF African pharmaceutical symposium, which will be held on July 16th, 2012 in Algiers, Algeria. The program is a tradition within Algeria that we are excited to share with the AfPS attendees.

simultaneous sessions on three topics: clinical and oncology pharmacy, HIV/AIDS, and biotechnology.

The major idea of the interns’ symposium is to give pharmacy students the opportunity to demonstrate their scientific knowledge, skills obtained during an internship in an analysis laboratory, individual abilities to perform scientific research, and to present this work as a case report.

The whole Reception Committee of the AfPS invites pharmacy interns to participate in this distinctive event and benefit from the unique opportunity to demonstrate their work on their internship and present it in a scientific way.

For young pharmacy interns, it is an introduction to research where the intern can think, observe, discover, report and conclude.

The poster exhibition will take place concurrently and continue after the oral presentations. This is a way to succinctly present the scientific work.

Let’s make it a successful international tradition for the interns!

During these days Algerian pharmacy interns have demonstrated knowledge and competence in the preparation and presentation of oral communications and posters turning on current topics that reflect the interest of pharmacy students to various facets of the profession by establishing a spirit of scientific competition to promote the development of various disciplines of the pharmaceutical profession.

Public Health Activities Theanti-­‐Diabetes Awareness Campaign

Two campaigns have been organized by ASEPA with the intention of restricting the spread of this illness respectively on November 14th 2010 and 2011.

These two campaigns of information and free screening were organized in the main hospitals of Algiers On the issue of these days, more than 2000 leaflets was distributed, about 1000 quizzes realized and about 1800 blood glucose tests measured for free!

During this public health actions, over 1000 quizzes have been completed, and nearly 3000 information leaflets were distributed and many people have been aware against the risks of smoking.

TANZANIA PHARMACEUTICAL STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION TAPSA 6th International Scientific Conference 2012 Report.

HELD FROM 16TH MARCH TO 17TH MARCH 2012.

ST JOHN’S UNIVERSITY OF TANZANIA. Description of the activity-Background TAPSA Is conducting annual scientific conferences once every year, where by different scientific paper presentations, scientific exhibitions, humanitarian activities and charity programs are done; this was the 6th International conference since when TAPSA started to conduct annual conference.

These conferences has been providing opportunity for Pharmacy students from all over around the country a chance to meet and share their knowledge and experience with International students, meanwhile seeking recognition of pharmaceutical students among fellow health professionals, students and public at large.

It is through these conferences, TAPSA promotes safeguard and maintain honour of pharmaceutical education through communication with other pharmaceutical students’ affiliations, also enhance fostering active cooperation with other Health agencies, Institutions and societies in Tanzania, Africa in particular and the world at large.

We also establish a proper association basis for communication between the universities/colleges, authorities and students, as well as maintaining harmonious relations between students and academics members of staff, the universities/colleges administration, non academic staff and community in general.

Aims Conference aimed at achieving several objectives and goals, including improving their learning skills and knowledge through different workshops and scientific dialogues, improving social interaction amongst Pharmaceutical students, but we also mainly aimed at achieving the following specific goals; VI. Provide a collaborative forum to participants to share knowledge and ideas enabling them to develop multinational and cross-institutional contacts and partnerships, as well as to enhance their knowledge, expertise and abilities with regard to utilization of pharmaceutical knowledge they have.

VII. Synthesize the main results of the experience, sharing and progress made in recent years to provide a baseline for VIII. discussion on the findings with policy makers, administrators and academics of National and International level.

IX. Highlight the barriers to setting up and utilization of Pharmaceutical knowledge and resources in health care policy reforms.

X. To assess the role of pharmacists in pharmaceutical care in achieving definite therapeutic outcomes towards patient health and quality of life.

Results: It is the first biggest TAPSA annual scientific conference that has ever happened before, since for the first time, it brought together all the pharmacy students from three different Universities where there is TAPSA chapters. Delegates from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe attended the conference, and delegates

from medical students and Nursing students attended the conference too; After the conference participants were wondering whether Pharmaceutical Care in possible in Tanzania and what should be done to enhance Pharmaceutical care in Tanzania; • Pharmacies practice should be restructured to be more patient focused and friendly • A pharmacist should not be a dispenser but also a drug dealer, handling the prescription correctly and providing more information about the drug and patient counselling • Pharmacists should build patient confidence that they feel, they have professionals that helps • Pharmacy practice should be left to and controlled by a pharmacist • Pharmacy task force should be much involved • Academicians should enhance Pharmaceutical care amongst students • Pharmacy council should test the performance of registered Pharmacists.

SOUTH AFRICAN PHARMACEUTICAL STUDENT FEDERATION INTRODUCTION TO SAPSF The South African Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation was formed in 1953 by two member branches and currently represents all Pharmacy students in South Africa, addressing their needs on a National platform and scale, whilst SAPSF is represented locally through it member branches.

The South African Pharmaceutical Student Federation is represented at all 8 Pharmacy Schools in the country and is found in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Durban, Polokwane and Potchefstroom.

The Federation strives to promote the needs of all Pharmacy students and represent Pharmacy students on various platforms. Other aims include our public health campaigns and our Annual Conference each year, hosted by a different branch of SAPSF. SAPSF United Campaign: Know Yourself The campaign unites all Pharmacy students in a national health promotion campaign, where the key focus is to allow the public to know themselves and their bodies better. It focuses not only on simple screening techniques but medication adherence and counseling. iHeart Initiative: This is SAPSF’s community related initiative whereby all the member branches get involved in a selected community related campaign. Last year the focus was on collecting toys for children in under privileged situations as well as for children’s hospitals or wards.

Final Word SAPSF believes in the future of Pharmacy not only in South Africa, but Africa and the world as well. Although SAPSF has been quieter in the international Pharmacy community, it still seeks to play a role, and will become more visible and play a larger role as it did in the past.

I Choose To Live – Diabetes Awareness Our online awareness campaign revolves around persons writing the words “I Choose To Live” on their hand and taking a picture of it and posting it on social media networks. Participants who are Pharmacy students use these words to engage the public too to educate on the risks involved with developing diabetes, as well as how to live a healthy lifestyle.

I want to be a Pharmacist – Education Campaign South Africa has a severe shortage of Pharmacists in the country, with less than 10 000 pharmacists serving the needs of 49 million people. As such it is imperative that an awareness of Pharmacy as a profession and career choice is promoted at schools, especially to those schools who are previously disadvantaged. This initiative was sponsored by Clicks Pharmacies and took place all across the country.

THE RWANDA INTERNATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL STUDENTS ‘ SYMPOSIUM 2012 HELD AT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF RWANDA ON MARCH 10TH 2012 This event is one of the annual events of RPSA/AEPHAR. This year’s had as theme: “Drug abuse and misuse eradication for a safer future”.

National and international students to mention Kampala International University attended it Pharmacy Students’ Association (KIUPSA), Makerere University Pharmacy Students’ Association (MUPSA), Nigeria and Kenya to mention Dr. Bedan Maina, the first representative of IPSF to our event.

Objectives: eradicate drug abuse and misuse.

Outcomes: a number of issues were discussed and recommendations were given to higher drug regulatory boards and all drug dealers to pay attention and to be more serious on drug abuse and misuse.Conclusion: Ministry of Health to support and follow up drug dealers in order to strengthen the rational medicine use.
