I'm Milana Schaal, and my purpose is to inspire young people to believe in themselves and take bold steps toward leadership. Through NEXTGEN Leader Academy, I aim to empower the next generation to find their voices, embrace their dreams, and shape the future with confidence and resilience.
As a bestselling author, 3X TEDx Speaker, and awardwinning TV producer and host of Courageous Conversations, I've seen firsthand the profound impact that courage and purpose can have on a person's life. My vision for NEXTGEN Leader is to create a platform that not only inspires young leaders but also provides practical tools to help them make their mark.
I want this magazine to bring together stories from those who've reached the summit of their fields with those just starting their journey, bridging experience and ambition in a way that motivates every reader. We are here to show that every step matters, every voice counts, and every leader has the potential to create change.
NEXTGEN Leader Academy is built on a foundation of inclusivity, resilience, and purpose. My own multicultural heritage—American, Ukrainian, and Armenian—has instilled in me the value of diverse perspectives. By embracing these differences, we become stronger and more impactful leaders. It’s a core belief of mine that leadership is about lifting others up and creating a community where everyone’s unique journey is celebrated.
So to all young visionaries, remember: success is not just about titles or recognition—it’s about the difference you make along the way.
As John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” Together, let’s inspire, empower, and lead by example. Thank you for joining me on this journey to shape the leaders of tomorrow. With gratitude and purpose, I am God’s Daughter, committed to lighting the way forward.

Ilona Parunakova:
James, thank you for joining me today. To start, what was your most pivotal failure in life, and how did it redefine your path to success?
James Malinchak:
For me, it’s deeply personal. My sister Vicki's passing was a moment that redefined my entire perspective on life. One day, my dad called and told me Vicki had collapsed. She was just 38, with three young children, and the right side of her body was paralyzed. We thought it was something minor—a pinched nerve or maybe a stroke. Test after test, we hoped for better news. Then, during one phone call, she told me something that still shakes me: “Little brother, I have a brain tumor, and the doctors say I have about three months to live.”
I tried to speak, but nothing came out. It was as if my body shut down. I’ll never forget that helpless feeling. Vicki passed three and a half months later. The greatest lesson I learned? Life is too short not to pursue what brings you joy, to surround yourself with people who uplift you, and to leave behind anything that makes you miserable. I did everything I could to save her life—positive visualization, faith, reading books like Dr. Bernie Siegel's Love, Medicine, and Miracles. But in the end, I couldn’t change the outcome. That moment taught me to value time, live authentically, and cherish the people who matter most.
I.P.:
If you could write a letter to your future
self 10 years from now, what would you warn or encourage yourself about?
First, I’d tell myself, "Don’t let anyone’s negativity define your reality." Other people’s opinions are reflections of their own limitations, not yours.
I grew up in a small steel mill town outside Pittsburgh. People would say, “You can’t play college basketball. No one from here does that.” And for a while, I believed them. But I tell people now: "Be careful who you listen to. Possibility blindness is contagious." Surround yourself with people who see your potential, not your limitations. I’d also emphasize the importance of time. After losing Vicki, I truly understood that time is the most precious commodity we have. Every second wasted on negativity or drama is a second you’ll never get back. Finally, I’d remind myself to respect my values. I’ve walked away from lucrative opportunities because they didn’t align with my principles. Not all opportunities are good opportunities for you. Even if something looks great on the surface, if it compromises your integrity, it’s not worth it.
I.P.:
How do you maintain your authenticity in a world that often rewards conformity?
J.M.:
It starts with knowing who you are and what you stand for. I’m a Christian, and my faith guides me, but let’s be real—there’s a lot of nonsense and fake personas out there, especially on social
media. I refuse to waste my time on people or situations that don’t align with my values.
Here’s my rule: Define your non-negotiables. For me, that means no drama, no dishonesty, and no compromising my authenticity. .
When I worked with a seminar company, I quickly left because what I saw behind the scenes didn’t match their public image. It’s simple: If it doesn’t align with who you are, walk away. Also, know your true friends. Go through a tough time and see who shows up— that’s how you separate the real from the fake. When my sister Vicki passed and when my mom passed, the people who truly cared were the ones who picked up the phone or reached out personally.
If you had to unlearn one lesson from your success journey, what would it be?
J.M.:
That’s an easy one: Not all opportunities are good opportunities for you. Early in my career, I said yes to everything. After being on ABC TV Show Secret Millionaire, everyone wanted a piece of my time. I was writing books, doing TV deals, speaking at events—you name it. I thought, “Say yes now and figure it out later.”
But here’s the truth: Saying yes to the wrong things contaminates your freedom. I was exhausted, miserable, and had no time for what truly mattered. I took a weekend to reflect at a small hotel in Malibu and asked myself one question: “Is this contributing to my freedom or contaminating it?”
The answer was shocking—90% of what I’d said yes to was contaminating my life. I went back, called my team, and cut everything that didn’t align with my happiness and freedom. Saying no is a complete sentence.
What an inspiring journey. Any final thoughts on staying true to yourself?
J.M : Absolutely. Your time, your values, and your authenticity are non-negotiable. Life is too short to compromise on any of them. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, align your actions with your purpose, and never forget: You only get one life— make it count.
James Malinchak’s wisdom is a masterclass in authenticity and purpose. His unwavering commitment to his values, his focus on time, and his ability to inspire through action make him a true icon of success. Let his lessons remind us all to pursue what matters most and live each day with intention.
I’m Rebecca Engle, and in the intricate fabric of who I am, there’s no room for the notion of laziness. Early on, life handed me lessons about the perils of standing still. As a toddler diagnosed with speech and developmental delays at three, I grappled with silence and sensory challenges. My folks describe me as stubborn, unpredictable, exhausting, and undeniably cute. Therapists used labels like nonverbal and delayed, playing hopscotch with diagnoses like Apraxia, Autism, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Limited by military insurance, local therapists and doctors often kept things textbook-bound and routine.
Education reassessments, and the guidance of teachers who saw my potential, my journey unfolded. My drive, clocking thousands of volunteer hours each year for various causes since the 5th grade, became a testament to unwavering effort. Amid this evolving story, one thing stayed constant— the commitment to giving it my all, 100 percent.
My story is one of resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief that we are all capable of achieving great things, no matter the obstacles we face.
The turning point to my worldview hit during an appointment when a therapist dropped a disheartening bomb: “Your daughter will never do anything we could not train a monkey to do.” In that moment, my parents and I walked away, starting a journey marked by resilience and determination. Traits like initiative, determination, and hard work weren’t just parts of me; they became weapons against the challenges ahead.
Through countless IEP meetings, a mom who turned research into an art form, navigating school changes, Special
As my words found their way out, they became more than just sounds. They became carriers of pride, determination, and a burning desire to overcome. With quirks acknowledged and an awareness of my differences, I embraced the truth—I’m capable and strong. I might not always be the best, but my determination never wavers. Pervasive developmental disorder and delays aren’t roadblocks; they’re threads woven into the fabric of my story, shaping an indomitable spirit that faces challenges one step at a time.
At the end of 5th grade, I managed to speak at my elementary school graduation, shed all paperwork, and enter middle school as an honors student with no 504/IEP. Despite the success, I still had my battles,
being bullied by peers for my quirks. I went through three years of middle school trying to discover who I was through community service. I found my love of crafting and my love of serving my community. That’s who I became. I wanted nothing but that.
In high school, I initially followed in my older brothers’ footsteps, taking on a demanding academic and extracurricular load. However, I quickly realized that my own path was different. I discovered that with volunteering, mentoring, and teaching were my true passions, not band or trying to emulate my siblings. This realization led me to pivot my focus and take on leadership roles in programs aligned with my interests. My efforts paid off, and I graduated early, setting the stage for my journey into higher education.
College was a roller coaster of triumphs and challenges. Initially, I thrived academically, but the journey was far from smooth. After relocating home for my sophomore year due to foot issues and a desire to be closer to family, I faced unexpected hurdles. My first application to the teacher education program was declined despite a promising interview. The attacks on my abilities struck a chord, leading me on a path of deep self-reflection and discovery.
My persistence paid off when I was accepted into the program on “special terms” the following year, though the promised support never materialized. Despite the challenges, I continued to push forward, driven by a desire to prove myself. A pivotal meeting in September 2023, where my communication skills and social interactions were unfairly criticized, became the catalyst for a significant decision. I chose to graduate early and pursue alternative paths to fulfill my dream of becoming an educator.
Throughout this journey, my passion for crafting and poetry has been a constant source of joy and fulfillment. As the
CEO of Rebe Crafts, I channel my creativity into handmade items that bring warmth and comfort to others. Knitting, in particular, has been a therapeutic outlet, allowing me to express myself and connect with a community that shares my love for the craft. My work in poetry, published in various outlets, serves as another avenue for self-expression and advocacy. Through my words, I aim to raise awareness about Autism and inspire others to embrace their unique journeys.
My entrepreneurial journey began with Rebe Crafts, a business born out of my love for knitting and a desire to share this passion with others. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a thriving
business, offering a range of handmade items from cozy scarves to intricate blankets. Each piece I create is infused with care and dedication, reflecting not only my skills but also my journey of overcoming challenges. Rebe Crafts has become more than just a business; it’s a platform where I can connect with others, share my story, and offer products that provide comfort and joy.
Running Rebe Crafts has taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, creativity, and the importance of community. The support and feedback from my customers have been incredibly rewarding, encouraging me to continue pushing the boundaries of my craft.
Every sale is a reminder of the impact my work can have and the connections that can be made through a shared love of handmade items.
In addition to Rebe Crafts, my love for poetry has been a significant part of my life. Writing poetry has always been a way for me to process
my thoughts, express my feelings, and connect with others on a deeper level. My work has been featured in various publications, allowing me to reach a broader audience and share my unique perspective on life, disability, and personal growth. Poetry, like knitting, is a therapeutic outlet for me, providing a space where I can be truly authentic and vulnerable.
alancing my businesses with my educational pursuits and personal life has been a challenging yet fulfilling journey. Each day presents new opportunities to learn and grow, whether it’s mastering a new knitting technique, crafting a poem that resonates with others, or navigating the complexities of running a business. My experiences have shaped me into a resilient, driven individual, committed to making a positive impact through my work.
From overcoming early developmental challenges to carving out my own path in education and entrepreneurship, I have learned that true success lies in staying true to oneself and pursuing one’s passions with relentless dedication. As I continue to navigate the complexities of life, I remain committed to making a positive impact through my work in education, crafting, and poetry.

I found myself blacked out in my own home after a night of partying; by myself. I had decided to split from my marriage, with a 2 year old son for whom I’d be sharing custody, and I had just lost my dream job. I had no idea what my future would look like or how I would pay the lawyer fees.
I had been sober most of my life, in high school and in university I was that boring kid that didn’t drink or smoke at parties. Looking at myself now I decided, life needed to change.
As a girl who was born in Bangladesh, then raised in Thailand and Canada - this life changing decision impacted my family and friends in a way where we were not able
to see eye to eye with one another. I found myself in what felt like abandoned and alone by the people I needed the most. I realize now this was protection in disguise. I had been put in a period of isolation on purpose.
I went within, there is a confusion saying, “Silence is a companion that never betrays.” I found myself, my voice and the strength to move myself forward.
I went within, there is a confusion saying,
“Silence is a companion that never betrays.” I found myself, my voice and the strength to move myself forward.
I realized there were a lot of beliefs I had internalized that I had to unlearn, in order to learn the ones that were true and would help me reshape my life. My life wasn’t falling apart, I was getting a chance to rebuild it anew.
So I decided to share my story, you can search me on YouTube to listen to my TEDx story, “Befriend Your EGO”. In my journey, I stumbled upon my duality. A shared space between two consciousness; The EGO which I call my human self, forever trying to protect
me and keep me safe in my reality. Meanwhile my soul, which you may know as the higher self, was constantly trying to push me beyond my comfort zone looking for new and exciting experiences.
With the snowball of changes happening in my life, I had to ensure my EGO that I was safe and gave my human self the time and space it needed to heal. I listened to my soul’s calling and decided to help others going through a similar journey as me.
I now help women heal their heartbreak in order to step into their divine femininity; their soft but powerful era. To come into a place of confidence, unshakeable self worth, and a love for self that radiates from within.
This journey had been the most tumultuous but one of the most blessed chapters of my life. I now get to enjoy my life with my son and create from my heart. I am forever grateful that I am able to serve others who have shared a similar pain as me. My mission is to serve women who feel like they have lost themselves in the journey of a heartache, to empower them to realize that they are their own healers and full of magic.
My intention is to dive all in and create and
build for the wonderful and enchanting life ahead.

Have you ever felt Lost stock confused? You don’t know why you are feeling that way. You don’t know why you are experiencing problems when you feel lonely. You don’t know why everything keeps happening to you constantly. You felt like there was no way out so you blamed God for your problems to feel better about yourself.
Have you felt the anger, the pain, the frustration and in the process you hated yourself so much that you even compare yourself.
You spend time criticizing, blaming and judging other people . You don’t realize how much pain you have inside you that you hurt others by your behavior, voice and your actions.
Have you ever felt like it wasn’t fair that some people had more than you didn’t know why. How come you do so much more than others and you have Pennie’s.
Have you ever felt that no matter what you do everything goes wrong for you and you just seem to attract bad luck and feel stuck to the point of thinking there is no way out for you . On top of that you have these emotions and thoughts that are running toward you that you sometimes or most of the time felt envy jealousy toward others but you hide it so well no one knows how you feel and how you compare yourself to someone who has a bigger house. Which house is bigger and who has a bigger car?
Now I want you to close your eyes and imagine having everything you desired . A nice home that your own father built with his own hands. Nice job mother working in a higher position having all the wealth you have ever desired. Now imagine in one night you’re hearing screaming, gun fire, people crying, children screaming, and you’re forced to leave your home. You’re forced to leave your home with no food, no water with no clothes ,and if you have any jewelry on your hands ,your fingers will be cut off.
Now imagine running hiding you’re scared you have no water no food and you have two children that you have to provide for them.
Truth is that most people do this everyday and they are not even aware of it. They do this on a repetition and they are constantly automatically programmed . Most people feel so lost, stuck confused that they let their past dictate their future and their mind with the feeling and emotions they are not even aware of.
But before I share the secrets with you and tell you how thinking works and why you feel those results. Let me share my story with you. Every journey is different, every person is different and every person has specialized knowledge. I want you to close your eyes and imagine having everything you have ever desired and wanted. But before sharing the story I want to give credit to God without God I wouldn’t have the success and the person I am today.
I’ll tell you that it wasn’t easy, took a lot of pain, frustration, challenges, sleepless nights binge watching investment but it wasn’t for nothing. When God loves you so much, he gives you more suffering and hardship in your life. When God loves you so much, to test your heart and your patience.
This is my story as a little girl I never got to live a normal life .Most people have things that they take things for granted. I was forced out of my house and me and my family and many other innocent people have to start all over again. Imagine being hungry,
thirsty, cold and nowhere to sleep. You want to sleep but you are scared to fall asleep because if you fall asleep you might be dead the next morning. So many people hungry scared frighten you hear gunfire explosions screams from around you and houses people burning in their houses. You hear other people screaming for help and you cannot help them and your mother caring two girls no help while your father looking for food. I want to introduce to you my grandfather who is my hero who helped my mother
during the hardest times when thousands of innocent lives were killed. When many mothers couldn’t carry any longer cold children screaming wet no diapers all they had was a piece of cloth. It was very hard for many moms. They were so cold starving, that some mothers left their children to survive and save their own lives. My mother couldn’t do what she would give her like first before she would leave us.

Let’s go on a treasure hunt! What’s possible uncovering, discovering and recovering your life purpose? There is something that gets ignited when a leader declares, there’s no more delay to my purpose!
We were recently at the beach sitting near a jetty watching wave after wave, crashing over the jetty which was fulfilling its purpose. The jetty, anchored, protects the beach from erosion and simultaneously creates a space to host thousands of people.
Maybe you feel like events and circumstances have caused delays or erosion? What is the bigger picture your jetty is anchoring?
Storms will come and go, but our response to the storm can transform our view of the waves. Purpose has a way of transforming our perspective.
Possibly there are some waves from the past that you’re processing next steps? Allow me to briefly share my personal journey!
Growing up with an alcoholic father and living in a home with verbal abuse and physical violence was tumultuous. My body would break out in welts from fear. Being beaten and constantly threatened, I was grateful for seeds of vision and purpose.
During my growth journey at 27, I made a choice to forgive my dad. I said, “Dad, I forgive you, I bless you, and accept you as my father.” My dad and I went on to have a 30-year close relationship!
What’s possible when a leader unlocks the treasury of purpose?
The waves actually revealed the effectiveness of the jetty’s influence on the beach. The jetty was influenced and built with core values.
Growing up through a household of alcoholism and abuse, led me to be a student of leadership, and becoming a Certified Master coach and empowering leaders for 30 years.
This purpose fueled empowering and transforming lives through coaching leaders, business owners and organizations. I am grateful to have facilitated leadership trainings with executive teams, organizations and entrepreneurs globally. One of the greatest privileges is to speak and connect with a live audience interacting and empowering them into their purpose!
Your Purpose:
• Resets habits
• Recalibrates focus
• Reframes perspectives
On my business journey, my dad inspired me through his transformation of getting free from alcohol for 30 years. I established an award-winning building company for 17 years and was able to give back by serving on nonprofit boards and benevolent, third world projects.
Like a jetty, consistently anchored, what are the gateways that can open for you? What’s possible when a leader is committed like a jetty? Purpose excels in a flourishing ecosystem which led to writing my first book, Synergistic Rhythm, on how to build a thriving ecosystem which is a #1 best seller on Amazon.
Our anchored purpose will interconnect in every area of our lives. This led to being a founding pastor of a church for over 13 years with a distinguished honor of seeing many lives transformed!
My greatest joy remains doing life with my highschool sweetheart, Patty, of 37 years and our three married children and seven grandchildren.
Questions to Anchor Your Life on Purpose: Where are you going? What are you building? Who are you becoming?
In life and business, when waves come, what’s possible being anchored in your unwavering purpose? Our response-ability is a catalyst! My dad always said, there is always a solution and you are not your past! I encourage you to keep going. It would be an honor exploring your growth options and purpose!

JAIME MCCORMICK
I am an energetic force of nature, always on the go. A friend once remarked, “I can’t wait until you’re so busy that you get tired.”
Like everyone, I’ve faced my share of challenges that have shaped who I am today. Losing my brother in an auto accident at just 19 had a profound impact on my life, especially since I was only 20 at the time.
I achieved rank second -degree black belt, even invited to try out for the Olympics. But I made the mistake of surrounding myself with the wrong crowd, leading to addiction.
When people ask me how I would introduce myself, I’ve come to embrace the phrase “a jack of all trades and master of none.
This perfectly captures my journey — not in terms of jobs or conventional skills, but through my diverse life experiences.
The moment my daughter was born transformed my life for the better. She is the reason I’m here, sharing my story today. At 31, I embraced Christianity when I discovered I was going to be a father. That realization was a pivotal moment that changed my lifestyle significantly.
My decade-long experience working in a psychiatric hospital was where I underwent the most transformation. I led groups for individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts, depression, and addiction. Many felt hopeless and unworthy of a better life. Through heartfelt conversations, I helped them see their inherent worth simply because they exist. In turn, I convinced myself of that truth, inspired by the resilience of my patients. This journey culminated in my book, *A Man Rising*.
An elderly woman once told me my words had saved her life, momentously affirming that I had something important to share. This sparked my journey as a speaker and the launch of my own business, Skate Angry.
Skate Angry is a skateboard company grounded in the values of respect, integrity, and discipline. Our mission goes beyond commerce; we are dedicated to giving back to the community and supporting our employees—while spreading the message that God is good, as stated in Psalm 34:8.
At Skate Angry, we believe in equal pay for all our employees, a principle that I think every business should adopt if surreal to be a business author after everything overcome.
Sometimes I think, “Who am I?” to pursue such endeavors. But my mindset has evolved from “Why me?” to “Why not me?”
I am uniquely positioned to share my experiences and guide others away from pitfalls similar to mine. So absolutely, why not me?
I dedicate my life to demonstrating the goodness of God and helping others realize their worth simply by existing. Every person has a unique purpose as long as they draw breath.
My work in the hospital inspired me to create the course *Perspective Driven Purpose*, as I genuinely believe that shifting our perspective can reveal our purpose—and that embracing this purpose can ignite a passionate, fulfilling life.

Doctor, proud mother, founder, certified life coach and the CEO of the BPMI Ladies Club Global Outreach
Dr. Rosalind Willis, widely known as Coach Roz, embodies the power of faith, resilience, and purpose. Her life is a testament to the transformative love of Jesus, which she credits as the source of her strength and guidance. As a motivational speaker, author, and humanitarian, Dr. Willis passionately shares a message of hope and perseverance: “As long as you have a pulse, you got a purpose.” This belief is the cornerstone of her life, driving everything she does. Her journey is deeply rooted in her love for Jesus and the legacy of faith passed down from her parents. Her father, Mr. Leon Fields II, was her rock, superhero, and that she loved dearly. The bond they shared was unbreakable, and it was through his example of a Father’s Love that Dr. Willis developed her profound love for Jesus. Her mother, Barbara Fields, has always been a constant source of love and support for
her even though she was Daddy’s girl. To this day, Barbara stands by her daughter, offering wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering faith.
Dr. Willis is blessed to be married for 14 years to her best friend, Elder Tommy Willis. Their marriage is a partnership built on love, respect, and a deep commitment to one another. They affectionately call each other “SELF,” reflecting their unity and shared purpose. As marriage coaches, they work together to help couples strengthen their relationships, offering a

shining example of Jesus’s love for the church. Elder Willis has been by her side through every challenge, loving and supporting her unconditionally—a living testament to the power of a Christ-centered marriage.
Together, they have raised a beautiful family, and Dr. Willis is a proud mother of six children: Terrance, Takisha, T.J., James, Verianna, and Aaliyah. Her joy is multiplied by her 14 grandchildren, with two more on the way. Surrounded by love and blessed with a growing family, Dr. Willis is a woman who truly understands the meaning of being blessed.
Dr. Willis’s impact story is a powerful illustration of how faith in Jesus can transform even the most painful experiences into opportunities for growth and healing. The defining moment in her life came when her father, Mr. Leon
Fields II, became critically ill. The decision to move to Lubbock, Texas, to be closer to him was not just about being nearby; it was a spiritual journey as well. During the four years she spent caring for her father, Dr. Willis’s faith deepened, and she experienced firsthand the power of prayer and divine intervention.
The day her father passed away, on July 25, 2019, was one of the most heart-wrenching moments of her life. Losing a man who had been her everything was a profound loss. Yet, even in her darkest hour, Dr. Willis turned to Jesus for comfort and guidance. During her grief, she discovered her true purpose. Unable to sleep, she began writing, pouring her heart onto the pages of a notebook. This act of writing became her therapy, a way to process her pain and find healing.
Her first book, “Pawpaw Baby Bunk n a Boo,” was a children’s story dedicated to her father. It was not just a tribute; it was an expression of the love and faith that had sustained her through her grief. This book marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life—one where her pain was transformed into purpose. Her second book she wrote in 1 day “Oceans Journey” It was a story about teen pregnancy that became a series.
Dr. Willis’s journey from grief to purpose is a powerful example of how faith in Jesus can turn even the most painful experiences
into opportunities for growth and healing. Her books, now over 30 in total, have helped countless others find their own paths to healing, reinforcing the idea that our greatest pain can lead to our most profound purpose.
Dr. Willis’s influence extends far beyond her personal story. Her work is a ministry, a way to bring the message of hope and healing to those who need it most. As the founder of T & R Birthing Books Publishing, she has helped over 50 authors birth their books, some of which have become bestsellers. Her mission is clear: to help people birth their books, share their stories, and find healing through writing.
But Dr. Willis’s impact is not confined to the literary world. Her work as a Evangelist, motivational speaker and humanitarian has touched the lives of many. As the founder of the BPMI Ladies Club Global Outreach, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women, Dr. Willis has been a driving force in transforming lives. For over a decade, she has hosted quarterly empowerment teas,
gatherings inspired by a mandate she received from God. These teas are a safe space where women come together to share their stories, support one another, and find the tools they need to improve their lives. The impact of these gatherings is profound, with many women experiencing life-changing transformations as they embrace their God-given purpose.

God transformed my life in 2016 from being an ordinary man into His servant, dedicated to making a difference in Pakistan. Through His guidance, we’ve been able to reach countless souls, sharing the hope and love of Christ. We’ve not only won many souls for His glory, but we’ve also extended His care to those in need.
Our ministry provides monthly food care packages to struggling families, especially those trapped in the chains of slavery. We’ve also opened our hearts to precious orphans and child laborers through our Sunday schools, where they can learn, grow, and feel God’s love.
For women and young girls, we’ve set up a
sewing center to equip them with skills that bring dignity and hope. We’ve also made it our mission to rescue families from the brickyard slavery system, offering them small businesses and a safe place to live.
Our efforts don’t stop there; we also work tirelessly to support the homeless, striving to be the hands and feet of Jesus in their lives.
Every step we take is a testament to God’s power to change lives, and we’re committed to continuing this work for His Kingdom.

My father had a habit of speaking with his hands. Once at dinner, he was in deep conversation with my mother, hands gesticulating wildly. So, I decided to experiment. I put my hands over his, holding them down on the table. He looked at me confused and I said, “don’t mind me, just carry on your conversation”, which he tried to do. Only he couldn’t talk. He would start, then stop, then start again. I said, “you can’t talk without your hands!” Turns out I have the very same challenge, and I’m okay with it. Each day I uncover more ways I’m like my parents, and find new perspectives on who they were. For instance, I only appreciated my mother’s stunning resilience when we grew closer after my father’s death. Rather than harden in anger or resentment at losing her best friend, the experience softened her and gave her a greater appreciation for the time we spent together. So when we sat at a restaurant barely 2 and half years after my father’s death, and she said “they found a mass on my lung” I knew I was in for more revelatory experiences. And while I couldn’t have anticipated the pain filled rollercoaster of her cancer journey, the lessons I learned from it have been extraordinary. Yet perhaps
I was more ready for these lessons than I thought, because Holocaust Remembrance Day was a vital part of my upbringing.
In our rural New Jersey community, the events of that day always ended with a candle lighting ceremony. The survivors would walk down the long auditorium aisles carrying a lit candle up to the stage, followed by their children and grandchildren.
Walking my father’s path I always moved slowly, making my way up to set my candle with the others.
As a young girl I repeatedly witnessed the palpable demonstration of survival and endurance, the search for meaning behind senseless horror and unimaginable loss. Not surprisingly, a 2013 Pew Research Center study revealed that 73% of Jewish Americans found “remembering the Holocaust” to be an essential part of their Jewish identity.
In fact, there is a word in Hebrew for this: “Zachor” or “act of remembrance.” Because we don’t just memorialize the past, we relive it to ensure that we find meaning in the events that took place, learn lessons from
them, and gather information on how they might impact the future.
After my mother’s death I came to a profound realization: Loss is the only guarantee in life, and remembering is a necessity to gain a deeper understanding of how it affects the way we live after our losses. And I came to realize we can capture this “act of remembrance” in the personal losses we experience. We can “re-live” those we’ve loved and lost in the stories we tell: the good, the painful, the mundane. We can also reflect on our experiences with that person, to gain deeper understanding from them, which can help us in moving forward with that loss.
When my mother hit complication after complication with her cancer, the doctors repeatedly said “this is so unexpected.” Her response? “Well, nobody ever expected the Spanish Inquisition.” I realized her humor was a coping mechanism and a way for her to face her illness and not lose herself to it, even while it was taking her away from us.
So, here are 3 ways you can move forward with loss:
- Honor your losses by “re-living” those you’ve lost.
- Learn the lessons of reflection.
- Look for a deeper understanding for your future.
When you “re-live” those you’ve lost, you remember ALL of who they were to you. This helps honor them, and allow them to live in your heart and memories. When you reflect on who that person was you may uncover things about them, find a better acceptance of who they were, and learn lessons you can apply to your own life. And with a deeper understanding of how that loss
impacts you, you can gain critical awareness of how to move forward into your own future in a healthy and fulfilling way.
When we weave our losses into the fabric of our living we can hold on to the whole of who someone was to us, keeping them alive, long after they are gone; living our lives to the fullest and making the most of the finite time we have left.

I had been a Senior Special Agent (SSA) of the United States Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for nearly three decades and at the time of my retirement in 2010 was the most senior DEA street agent in the world. During my time with DEA, I have taught over 85,000 law enforcement officers, social workers,
I’m just a regular guy, I have done more than some and less than others.
civilians, and parents. Prior to training, as a street agent working undercover for over 18 years. I worked the investigation into a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory operated by the real life “Walter White”, that became the inspiration behind the award-winning television series “Breaking Bad”. Most importantly, I was appointed as Lead Investigator in the investigation of the murder of DEA SA Ray Stastny in 1987 in Atlanta by then United States Attorney, Robert Barr.
In 2010 I took over the National Law Enforcement Speakers Bureau, LLC, a network of retired DEA Special Agents and other topic specific experts, providing the highest quality of training to thousands of professionals in the law enforcement community. In 2021 I worked as an Investigative Consultant for a very successful law firm in Charleston, SC, working on a variety of criminal and civil cases. One of these cases involved high profile murders in South Carolina, depicted in the Netflix Documentary, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. In 2022 I returned to government service as a Senior Immigration Services Officer/ Instructor as the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Academy
Training Center in Charleston, where I provide training in the areas of Interviewing, Professional Writing, Discretion, and many other topics.
However, my experiences and training would not prepare me for the most difficult battle of my life. In middle school, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with a very serious form of dyslexia, making it nearly impossible for her to read. Her two older sisters were straight A students, so I expected the same from the youngest one. Up until the time we had her professionally evaluated, I assumed she was lazy. It never occurred to me that it wasn’t that she didn’t want to read, but that she couldn’t read. I was flooded with guilt over how long it took for us to have her diagnosed. Thankfully, through many years of intensive tutoring and medication, she was able to manage her issues and blossomed into a beautiful and accomplished professional pastry chef.
During her college years I learned how many of her fellow students also had issues in school but were never professionally evaluated. Instead, they self-diagnosed and self-medicated. They offered her money for her medication, once they learned she had a prescription. Most purchased their pills via social media and “friends”, hoping for the same results my daughter had. Many would not find those results. Today the DEA claims that over 90% of illicit drugs and counterfeit prescription pills are tainted with fentanyl. Too many in her graduating class never made it to graduation. I wish I had spent more time during my career to inform other parents of how fragile life can be. Battling drug dealers is fun, but saving kids is more important. Today, I try and share these lessons learned with anyone who will listen.
I would not trade my career for any other. I have been blessed with meeting some of the greatest heroes in America and calling many of them my friends. God led me to my astounding wife of over 31 years and together we both battled cancer and won, while raising a family in Charlotte, NC. I’m just a regular guy, I have done more than some and less than others. Most importantly, I am the lucky husband of a beautiful wife, father of three awesome daughters and grandfather of two incredible granddaughters. In actuality, I’m just an ordinary guy battling the forces of evil in extraordinary ways.

Entrepreneur, volunteer, and advocate for mental health and empowerment
I am Cheryl Fong, an entrepreneur, volunteer, and advocate for mental health and empowerment. My journey has been anything but conventional, but each challenge I’ve faced has strengthened my resolve to make a difference in the world. Today, I run multiple businesses and serve my community, with a core mission of transforming lives, being a beacon of hope, and empowering others, especially women, to discover their potential.
As an entrepreneur, I manage an audio and professional lighting business, but my passion lies in my role as the founder of Star Architect. Through Star Architect, I dedicate myself to empowering women to embrace their true selves. My mission is to help women find the confidence to live boldly and authentically, enabling them to realise their fullest potential.
However, my journey to empowerment has not been an easy one. In my late teens, I suffered from depression and, also a victim of molestation, a struggle that continued for nearly 15 years. This ordeal shook me deeply but ultimately strengthened my determination to overcome adversity. During this period, I was on medication to manage severe mood swings. Recovering from these challenges has shaped who
I am today—stronger, more resilient, and more compassionate toward others facing similar struggles. My experiences with mental health fuel my determination to advocate for awareness, healing, and selfcare for others.
Beyond business, I actively contribute to society through several volunteer roles. As a School Advisory Committee (SAC) member for secondary school under Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE), I actively participate in shaping education policies to build a strong, self-reliant generation. My role also fosters closer relationships between the community and school leaders, teachers, and students. After I ended my ten years of service in one secondary school, the Ministry of Education has assigned me to another secondary school to start my new term to serve from the year 2022. For my contributions, I have been honoured with the “Service to Education Award” twice awarded by the Ministry of Education.
Another cause close to my heart is my work as a volunteer caregiver trainer with Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL). Having been a caregiver myself for my late father with mild dementia, my mother with severe depression and anxiety disorder, and my youngest son, who struggled with Major Depressive Disorder,
I understand the emotional toll caregiving can take. Through CAL, I advocate for mental health awareness, guiding caregivers on how to practise self-care and self-love, which are vital for their well-being.
My journey has been anything but conventional, but each challenge I’ve faced has strengthened my resolve to make a difference in the world.
In addition, I volunteer as a Patient Advocate with the SingHealth Patient Advocacy Network (SPAN). Currently, my mother suffers from kidney problems, and my husband is battling stage 4 lung cancer. I am also the sole caregiver for both. As the collective voice of patients and caregivers, SPAN empowers me to contribute directly to improving healthcare experiences. By working closely with healthcare teams, I bring valuable patient and family perspectives to enhance the quality of care for others. My commitment to service also extends to my faith community. As a leader of Soka Gakkai Singapore, I hold dialogues to encourage and empower my members to live hope-filled lives, even in the face of adversity. A principle that resonates deeply with me, learned from my late mentor Dr Daisaku Ikeda, is to treasure the person in front of me—this guides my interactions and shapes how I lead my life and how I treat others with respect and dignity.
Despite the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, I continued to push forward. In 2020, I was honoured as one of the 10 awardees of the TKS Singapore Lady of Excellence (Heroine Award) 2020/2021, recognizing my efforts in contributing to society. This was a humbling experience that filled me with immense gratitude.
To further raise awareness about mental health and caregiving, I embraced the challenge of participating in the TKS Mrs. Singapore pageant. In 2022, I was crowned TKS Elite Mrs. Singapore International 2022. Competing in the pageant was more than a beauty contest for me; it was a platform to highlight the importance of resilience, inner beauty, and strength. Winning this title allowed me to build new connections, inspire others, and reinforce the message that we can overcome life’s challenges with grace and determination.
In December 2024, I was nominated, and awarded the recognition as the International Women’s Empowerment and Community Leadership Award of the Year 2024 organised by the Malaysia Fashion, Modeling and Pageant Association (MFMPA). It was truly an honour to receive this award and to continue my mission to empower women to achieve success in their lives.
Today, as Star Architect, I am more committed than ever to continuing my mission of raising awareness for mental health and caregiving. Through my work, I aim to inspire others to believe in themselves, live with courage, and shine a light for others to follow.
