RELIABLE NAVIGATION WITH SAFETY LASER SCANNER RSL 400

RSL 400 safety laser scanner. Safeguarding of the AGV and simultaneous detection of the measured values for the navigation software.

With its RSL 400 safety laser scanner with measurement value output, Leuze electronic is setting new standards in the reliable navigation of automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

T

he new RSL 400 safety laser scanner with detailed measurement value output for AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) navigation is the result of many years of experience in the development of safety technology. This compact device from the optical sensor system manufacturer Leuze electronic is a safe scanner that combines safety technology and qualitatively superior measurement value output in a single device. This enables reliable safeguarding and navigation of AGVs. Measurement value output is optimized to navigation software that functions according to the principle of natural navigation with SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping).

With up to 100 switchable field pairs, the RSL 400 offers optimum adaptation of the protective fields – even in cases where there are many different movement and loading conditions. Parallel monitoring of multiple protective fields enables safe and reliable reduction of the speed of AGVs. These new functions are also available as a device model with PROFINET/PROFIsafe interface, thereby making integration extremely easy. MORE INFORMATION

Due to its high angular resolution of 0.1 degrees, the RSL 400 offers extremely detailed scanning of the environment across the entire measurement range of up to 50m. This is achieved through a particularly narrow laser spot that maintains its perpendicular shape over the entire scanning angle. The distance values have a high accuracy and are not influenced by the reflectance of the object.

The additional output of the received signal strength value for each beam allows autonomous detection of reflectors by the navigation software. When beams strike a reflector, the values differ greatly from any other environment, which makes simple and reliable detection possible.

FAIGLE PROVIDES COMPONENTS MADE OF HIGHPERFORMANCE PLASTIC FOR SHUTTLE SYSTEMS VERY QUIET RUNNING MEETS HIGH LOAD CAPACITY

faigle shuttle wheels are made completely from thermoplastic material. They have a soft, thickwalled tyre and resilient hub. This provides them with excellent damping and very quiet running properties. (source: faigle Kunststoffe GmbH)

In many cases, high performance plastics meet the demands regarding resistance and fatigue properties for components better than metal. faigle applies its application expertise and wellengineered design to develop a new generation of wheels for shuttle systems.

V

ibrations in highbay warehouse aisles pose a challenge for the safe handling of goods in shuttle systems. These are caused by poor wheel concentricity or impacts in the rails. Goods in the bays may also slip to such an extent that the telescopic arms can no longer grab them. If this happens, the system needs to be switched off and the goods retrieved manually. Plastic wheels minimise this type of vibration.

MORE INFORMATION

Wheels from faigle: Plastic instead of metal In the past, shuttle wheels were usually made of a metallic hub and a pressureless cast tyre made of polyurethane. faigle produces shuttle wheels completely of thermoplastic. They consist of a soft, thickwalled tyre and resilient hub. This provides them with excellent damping and very quiet running properties. They can even cope with the dynamic starts and abrupt stops which are typical of shuttle systems. This is the best way to avoid vibrations in highbay aisles.

23 | Industry USA | January 2019

12

faigle wheels are produced in an injectionmoulding process which provides excellent bonding between the tyre and the hub. There is no need for additives such as primers and this increases process reliability in production. Another benefit is that shuttle wheels pro-duced completely from plastic are much lighter than models with a metallic hub. The lower weight requires less drive force and reduces unsprung mass. Low flattening and reliable bonding If the shuttle system is at standstill for longer periods of time, such as at weekends, soft tyres tend to flatten. This is called flattening and causes considerable vibration when the system is re-started. faigle wheels have a soft tyre but nonetheless don’t flatten and ensure very quiet running. This is attributable to the use of special materials and reduced compression set which considerably reduce flattening. Wheels need to reliably transfer drive and brake force to the rails. One condition here is good grip between the wheel and the rail. Despite this, wheels are prone to a certain amount of slippage which may lead to abrasion that is deposited on the rails, causing vibration. The thermoplastic

material used by faigle is extremely resistant to wear and prevents deposits on the rails. High production volumes, custommade products Shuttle systems are becoming more widespread in companies which have high warehouse turnover, a large number of orders and low order volumes. The demand for wheels has risen considerably due to the trend in automatic storage and retrieval systems. Manufacturing wheels using the injection moulding process allows the rapid and economical production of high volumes. faigle, the thermoplastics specialist, also implements custom solutions. For example, economical mould inserts in master moulds specially developed for shuttle wheels with diameters ranging from 80 to 150 mm. This minimises the initial costs for the customer for implementing an injectionmoulding solution.

can also be manufactured economically, even in complex geometries. This is possible since faigle is a plastics specialist with many years of experience and know-how in the design of geometries using FEM and injectionmoulding processes. At the same time, plastic flaps can meet the extremely high requirements regarding load capacity and durability much better than components made of metal. Telescopic arms in shuttle systems must be linearly guided during advance and retraction operations. Sliding elements from faigle made of PAS-LXY have a low friction coefficient, which prevents the stickslip effect, allowing telescopic arms to slide without jerking. The sliding elements are maintenancefree and require no lubrication. In addition, the sliding elements and their mating components are extremely wearresistant. www.faigle.com

Plastic for shuttle flaps The use of high performance plastics is also ideal for other shuttle system components, such as the highly stressed shuttle flaps on telescopic arms. These are normally made of aluminium or steel, and are mounted in pivot bearings and fitted with a rotary drive coupling. As a result, shuttle flaps are complex milled parts. faigle uses fibrereinforced high performance plastics in the production of shuttle flaps, which are lightweight and 23 | Industry USA | January 2019

ESTERLINE CONNECTION TECHNOLOGIES SOURIAU INVESTS MASSIVELY IN R&D FOR THE DEPLOYMENT OF ITS NEW MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

The European REACH regulation, which aims to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment, imposes strict rules on the use of chemical substances. Hexavalent chromium used in the surface treatment of numerous SOURIAU products is one of the prohibited substances.

W

ith the desire to keep its technical leadership in connectors for harsh environments and to continue to further innovate together with its customers, the research and development department of SOURIAU has invested for several years in research into new manufacturing processes. When completed, these should allow SOURIAU to comply with the regulations imposed by REACH, and at the same time safeguard the employment of its personnel in France for the future. Interview with THOMAS PICHOT, manager of the aeronautic R & D Unit

MORE INFORMATION

Could you describe the use of hexavalent chromium in your industry? TP: We design and manufacture electrical or optical connectors used in harsh environments, for aerospace, aeronautic, military and industrial applications. The housings and the accessories of our connectors are made of composite materials, aluminium or steel, and we have been using hexavalent chromium for decades in our electroplating process. This substance is used to give our products the anticorrosive properties, electrical continuity and appearance our customers want. Because hexavalent 23 | Industry USA | January 2019

14

chromium is on the list of prohibited chemical substances, we are working to replace it. Is it possible to replace one product by another? TP: Yes of course, but it takes time. In fact, it's not just that we have a perfect mastery of the use of hexavalent chromium in the treatment of different materials such as aluminium, copper alloys or even certain thermoplastics, but the properties of these products are still far superior to what it is possible to achieve with other substances. So the difficulty is twofold; to make sure that it's possible to deploy the substitute on an industrial scale, and that it allows us to obtain the required performance. For example, in certain cases we use hexavalent chromium to facilitate the adherence to other coatings on the support material. So we will have to qualify a product which offers the same functional characteristics while still allowing us to incorporate it in a controlled manner in our manufacturing procedures. Finally, we have to keep in mind that in other cases hexavalent chromium is used in the final stages of the process and therefore persists on the surface. If we replace it, we have to make sure that the new connectors are

NEWS

Was this an easy transition? TP: Obviously it wasn't. It took us several years to put this new “technological building block into place and to validate it, because it is not just about validating a concept in the lab, it has to be reproduced at scale and over a long period. In some respects, one has to build up experience. Take for example electroplating baths which contain up to several hundred litres. Their composition and perfect mastery of the process are the result of experience in numerous aspects: the immersion time and the concentrations of the different products have to be validated. We have to make sure there's no impact on the geometry of the parts and monitor the aging of the baths to guarantee the quality of the treatment, etc. Dozens of parameters have to be taken into account, analyzed and mastered.

compatible with the connectors already in the field, because they may be in contact with each other. It's possible but it's a really complex challenge, wouldn't you agree? TP: In fact, as of now we don't have just one replacement solution, because chrome is not always used for the same purpose; it depends on the materials and the final treatment. Our approach has been to categorize our connector components according to their material, identify the electrochemical mechanisms in play and carry out a large number of tests at different stages from the bath to the pilot production line, orienting our research towards multiple solutions.

The process of phasing out hexavalent chromium seems to be well underway... TP: As soon as the European REACH regulation was put in place, the management of SOURIAU ESTERLINE and the whole team realized that we had to launch a major program to innovate our surface treatment technology so that we could keep the production of our connectors in France. It's a major effort in terms of investment and it has also strengthened the cooperation between our teams and with our customers as well. Our desire to demonstrate our capacity for innovation, by finding replacement solutions for hexavalent chromium, is strengthening our experience and leveraging our know-how. Our customers are supporting us in this task; they know that we are on the right path going forward for the future. We have to protect human health and the environment. MORE INFORMATION

So what is the current status of your research? TP: We no longer use hexavalent chromium in the treatment of composite housings. First of all, we perform a tribofinishing process to modify the surface properties and allow our new preparation treatment (hexavalent chrome-free) to facilitate the adherence of the successive metallic coatings. For aluminium connectors, we have also eliminated passivation with hexavalent chromium in our zinc-nickel treatment process while developing a new procedure using a substance certified and authorised by REACH as non-hazardous. We have thus reduced our annual consumption of hexavalent chromium half, from 8 to 4 tons.

What is the status of hexavalent chromium for cadmiumplated connectors? TP: Currently, only hexavalent chromium passivation can guarantee high resistance to corrosion and excellent electrical conductivity while retaining a non-reflecting and dark appearance which are still essential characteristics of military products. One of the solutions developed as an alternative to cadmium deposition is based on a zinc-nickel treatment with a hexavalent chrome-free passivation. This make is possible to have finished products which offer excellent characteristics while still guaranteeing full compatibility with the equipment already installed. However this solution is not necessarily going to be the right one in every case. We are continuing to use hexavalent chromium in cadmium- plated products to meet certain customer requirements or to reach markets outside Europe where the regulation does not apply and where we nevertheless have to stay competitive. We have obtained an exemption from the European Chemicals Agency for 12 years, which we are using to continue our research, and at the same time we are analyzing the techniques used in other industries, such as the car industry for example. Our final goal is naturally to completely eliminate of hexavalent chromium from all of our manufacturing processes.
