Beyond Shelters: Affordable Housing for All Seattle, WA—In November 2015 Seattle’s Mayor declared a state of emergency in response to the growing crisis of over 10,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. In a transitional housing program nestled among the historic homes of Capitol Hill, a group of women came together determined to make a change. The Circle discussed structural oppressions that led to their experiencing homelessness and the barriers they continue to face as they try to find affordable housing. Many of the women are unable to find stable employment that pays a living wage, in part due to the stigma of having an address from a transitional housing program.
Justice for Women is a grassroots movement for social justice and systemic change, especially women living in poverty. Women’s Justice Circles empower women to identify issues of concern in their community and act for change.

Rather than focusing on one action, they successfully invested their energy on three levels of power and influence.
