T

he Calligaris Group is an example of the smart evolution of the Italian medium-sized industry.

Established in 1923, 88 years ago, with a poor product and as a monocultural company, it has climbed the ladder of the Italian economic progress: development of the production process, broadening of the product range, identification of new sales channels, “discovery” and exploitation of the brand, internationalization of markets.

Nowadays the Calligaris Group, after a new process revolution started in the mid-nineties, has got post-industrial connotations. It doesn’t manufacture everything, but it manages everything, thus ensuring the final quality. Inside the company there have remained the design and the industrialisation of products, as well as the organisation and the logistics of the lines of suppliers converging to the final assembly. The proliferation of products has enormously expanded the use of materials different from the traditional ones, creating the need for new skills.

l gruppo Calligaris è un esempio dell’intelligente evoluzione dell’industria italiana di medie dimensioni.

Nata nel 1923, 88 anni fa, con un prodotto povero e come azienda monoculturale, ha percorso tutte le tappe del progresso economico del nostro Paese: con l’evoluzione del processo produttivo, l’ampliamento della gamma di prodotti, l’individuazione di nuovi canali di vendita, la “scoperta” del marchio e la sua valorizzazione, l’internazionalizzazione sui mercati.

Oggi il gruppo Calligaris, dopo una nuova rivoluzione di processo avviata alla metà degli anni Novanta, ha connotati post-industriali. Non fabbrica tutto, ma gestisce tutto, garantendo la qualità finale. All’interno dell’azienda risiede la progettazione e l’industrializzazione dei prodotti, oltre all’organizzazione e alla logistica delle linee di fornitori che convergono all’assemblaggio conclusivo. La moltiplicazione dei prodotti ha ampliato enormemente l’utilizzo di materiali diversi da quelli tradizionali, creando la necessità di competenze nuove. Nel 1995 lo stabilimento di Manzano (UD), in

Just like in the automotive or the household appliances industry, specialist products manufactured elsewhere – from bodyworks to wheels, from compressors to electronic components – gather on the assembly line and become a car or a refrigerator. The production organisation comprises eight plants, both in Italy and abroad, with distribution subsidiaries in the United States and in Japan.

From them anonymous product to the strength of the brand Over the past 5 years Calligaris has more clearly positioned its brand on the relevant market, offering mid-range products dedicated to those consumers who want to buy a good designer item, characterised by careful and functional planning, high quality materials and finishings, in order to place them in a normal living environment.

“From this perspective, Calligaris guarantees to the consumer a flexible purchase, the chance to choose materials and styles within a very wide range – Mauro Mosca, marketing director of the company, explains. (fig.1) – Playing with the finishings and with the variety of effects becomes a selling tool.

A high-end brand characterises itself through its own aesthetic and stylistic rigour: Calligaris decided to position itself, on the relevant international markets, in the mid-range bracket, where the consumers look for a good, “essential” product, intended for a home which is functional, made to be lived in.”

In recent years this company, which at the beginning produced only chairs and tables, has completed its range with the introduction of sofas, furnishings and lighting systems, finding itself to handle different materials but managing to offer a range of finishings which are consistent with each other.

L’organizzazione produttiva è distribuita in otto sedi, in Italia e all’estero, con filiali di distribuzione negli Stati Uniti e in Giappone.

Dal prodotto anonimo alla forza del marchio Negli ultimi 5 anni Calligaris ha posizionato in modo più chiaro il proprio marchio nel mercato di riferimento, proponendo prodotti di fascia medio-alta dedicati al consumatore che vuole acquistare un buon prodotto di design, caratterizzato da una progettazione attenta e funzionale, da materiali e finiture di ottima qualità da inserire in un 1 contesto abitativo normale.

“In quest’ottica Calligaris garantisce al consumatore un acquisto flessibile, la possibilità di scegliere fra materiali e stili diversi all’interno di una gamma molto ampia – spiega Mauro Mosca, direttore marketing dell’azienda (fig.1) – ecco che giocare con le finiture e con la moltiplicazione degli effetti diventa uno strumento di vendita. Un marchio di altissima fascia propone un proprio rigore estetico e un’offerta stilistica rigida: Calligaris, nei mercati internazionali di riferimento, ha deciso di posizionarsi nella fascia d’acquisto media, quella del consumatore alla ricerca di un buon manufatto “di sostanza”, destinato ad una casa funzionale, da vivere”.

Partita con la produzione di sedie e tavoli, l’azienda negli ultimi anni ha completato la propria offerta con l’inserimento di divani, complementi d’arredo e sistemi d’illuminazione, trovandosi quindi a gestire materiali diversi ma offrendo una gamma di finiture coerenti fra loro.

Finishing as the key to research and innovation “In our field the product design plays a key role since the fragmentation of supply and demand is impressive – Mauro Mosca continues. – In the furniture sector we are witnessing the reversal of the trend of the wood as the first choice material: metal, and to a lesser extent plastic, are gaining more and more approval. The finishing gives a sense to the design and allows a differentiation from competitors there where the formal innovation has a physical limit, related to the function of the products. Our aim is to give a sense of Italian style and design also as regards finishings and colours.”

Calligaris has always distinguished itself for the research on finishing, refusing to conform exclusively to the trend of the polished and chrome effects which have prevailed for a long time, but rather suggesting alternative tone on tone finishings to match different building materials (fig. 2).

La finitura come chiave di ricerca e innovazione “In questo settore il design del prodotto riveste un ruolo fondamentale poiché la polverizzazione della domanda e dell’offerta è impressionante – continua Mauro Mosca – nel mobile e nel complemento d’arredo stiamo assistendo al ribaltamento del trend che voleva il legno come prima scelta a livello di materiali: il metallo, e la plastica in misura minore, stanno guadagnando sempre più consensi. La finitura dà un senso al design, consente di differenziarsi rispetto ai concorrenti laddove l’innovazione formale presenta dei limiti fisici, legati alla funzione stessa del prodotto. Il nostro scopo è dare un senso di italianità e design anche sulle finiture e sui colori”.

Calligaris si è sempre distinta per la ricerca sulla finitura, rifiutando di omologarsi esclusivamente al trend del lucido e del cromato che ha spadroneggiato per molto tempo, ma proponendo finiture alternative tono su tono per accoppiare materiali costruttivi diversi fra loro (fig. 2).

similar finishings on different materials (fig. 3) – Mosca adds. For many years we have worked with the satin aluminum finishings and on the chrome finishings because they had become an essential demand of the market, but we never stopped working and offering other matt and lucid tone on tone finishings (fig. 4), a wide range of whites but also brighter pastel colours such as the oranges.”

For 15 years now the vast majority of the Calligaris coated products have been powder coated; the company relies on a few job coaters, keeping in its plant only the liquid painting system for the wood products. For 10 years the distinctive finishing of the Calligaris products has been a semi-gloss champagne tone, a satin aluminum finishing, warmer than the classic gray, obtained with a two-layer powder coating made up of a champagne tone coating and a final coat of semi-gloss transparent paint and able to hide the plasticity of the coating and to create a soft finishing which enhances the metal component of the product (fig. 5).

Last October the designers of Calligaris decided to look for new finishings able to supplant the traditional ones and to give a new connotation to the products of the brand. Among the 1,300 colours offered by the Austrian producer Tiger Coatings, long-standing supplier of powder coatings for the Italian company, the designers 34 N. 8 - 2011 MARCH/marzo arzo - international PAINT&COATING magazine

Per molti anni abbiamo lavorato sulla finitura alluminio satinato e sulle finiture cromate perché erano diventate una richiesta imprescindibile del mercato, ma non abbiamo mai smesso di lavorare e proporre finiture opache e lucide tono su tono (fig. 4), una vasta gamma di bianchi ma anche tinte pastello forti come gli arancioni”.

Da 15 anni a questa parte la stragrande maggioranza della produzione verniciata di Calligaris è verniciata a polveri e l’azienda si affida ad alcuni terzisti, conservando all’interno solo l’impianto per la verniciatura a liquido destinato ai manufatti in legno. Per 10 anni la finitura identificativa del prodotto Calligaris è stata una tinta champagne semi lucida, un effetto alluminio satinato, più caldo rispetto al classico grigio, ottenuto con una verniciatura a polveri doppio strato costituita da una mano di tinta color champagne e una mano di trasparente a finire semi-lucido in grado di togliere la plasticità della vernice e conferire un finish morbido che esalta la componente metallica del prodotto (fig. 5).

Lo scorso ottobre i designer Calligaris hanno deciso di andare alla ricerca di nuove finiture ad effetto in grado di soppiantare la finitura tradizionale e regalare una nuova connotazione ai prodotti del marchio.

Fra i 1.300 colori proposti dal produttore austriaco Tiger Coatings, fornitore storico di vernici in polvere per l’azienda italiana, i designer hanno trovato due

found two new colours which will be officially launched next April during the Salone del Mobile of Milan: a sa n metallic finishing, so at the touch, and a transparent black called “black nickel”.

“Through this renova on of our finishings – Mosca states – we are looking for a common standpoint for both our sa n and chrome finishings. For many years the Calligaris brand has recognized itself in the P95 champagne colour, used on many different products and supplied to us by Tiger Coa ngs as an exclusive tone. Apart from the chrome finishings, this colour represents 80% of our produc on, while all other colours cons tute the remaining 20%.”

Four years later our two-layer champagne colour made its first appearance in Calligaris and for 10 years it has been performing its task very well.

For the two new colours chosen by the company designers, we have opted again for a two-layer cycle, 80 µm per layer, in order to obtain a depth, a resistance and an effect which could not be achieved in one single coat, be it with liquid or powder coating.

All the powder coatings supplied by us, about 15 different colours in total, are polyesters, so as to ensure a high wear resistance even outdoors, since some Calligaris products are also used as garden furniture. Moreover, both the metallic and the pastel colours require an application with tribo guns, ensuring a smoother application of the film and a greater penetration in hidden areas.”

Even though in the few last years the trend, also among the Italian companies, has been to save on finishing, making safe and conservative choices, Calligaris has chosen to bet on colour and bear the increased process cost due to the use of a two-layer cycle.”

Inoltre, sia le tinte metallizzate che le tinte pastello richiedono un’applicazione con pistole tribo che garantiscono una distensione migliore del film, una penetrazione maggiore nelle zone nascoste”.

Se il trend di questi ultimi anni, anche fra le aziende del Made in Italy, è risparmiare sulla finitura, compiendo scelte sicure e conservatrici, Calligaris ha scelto di puntare sul colore e sostenere il costo di processo maggiore implicato dall’utilizzo di un ciclo a doppio strato”.

“The peculiar objects are sold also through their colour –Mauro Mosca explains. – The colour becomes a real added value even in the simplest products such as stacking chairs. The marketing function in Calligaris also includes the design understood as the planning of new products and new finishings. We have an extremely wide product range and sometimes we run the risk of cannibalizing our own novelties, within so many options: focusing on the innovation of the finishings to keep the products up-to-date is a strategic marketing choice. A careful finishing conveys to the consumers attention to detail and focus on the customer’s needs, much more than a daring formal research which is often incomprehensible in the eyes of those who buy and use our products.”

“For this reason, I am not afraid to state that the innovation of the finishing is an important part of the evolution of the product – Mosca concludes – and that the formal innovation alone cannot lead the evolution.”

“Oggetti particolari si vendono anche tramite il colore – spiega Mauro Mosca – il colore diventa davvero un valore aggiunto anche nei prodotti più semplici come le sedie impilabili. La funzione del marketing in Calligaris comprende anche il design inteso come ideazione di nuovi prodotti e nuove finiture. Possediamo una gamma amplissima di prodotti e talvolta corriamo il rischio di cannibalizzare le nostre stesse novità all’interno di una scelta così ampia: concentrarsi sull’innovazione delle finiture per mantenere attuali i prodotti è una scelta di marketing strategica. Concentrarsi sulle finiture comunica molto di più al consumatore l’attitudine alla cura dei dettagli e la focalizzazione sulle sue esigenze, piuttosto che una ricerca formale spinta e ardita che risulta spesso incomprensibile agli occhi di chi acquista e usa il nostro prodotto”.

“Per questo motivo non ho timore ad affermare che l’innovazione della finitura è una parte importante dell’evoluzione del prodotto – conclude Mosca – e che l’innovazione formale non può, da sola, guidare l’evoluzione”.
