I

n the last few months of 2014, the oil and gas industry has been under the lens.

The economic and geopolitical risks continue to have a strong impact on the oil and gas industry. The threat of new Western sanctions, the desire of European consumers to reduce their dependence on the Russian energy resources and the unpredictability of oil prices (which are at historic lows as I write these lines) on the global markets are just some of the uncertainty factors that weigh on this sector and greatly affect the world economy.

The oil and gas industry is one of the most strategic application areas for the protective coating field, a sector on which the majority of the manufacturing companies focus their R&D efforts. In fact, the extraction and transport of oil and gas include such a large amount of variables and risks related to environmental, health and safety issues that the protective coatings are seen as a sort of “insurance policy” against environmental disasters, loss of lives and economic damage caused by the premature failure of offshore, onshore, submerged and buried structures due to corrosion.

In the first four months of 2015, there will be several events and fairs dedicated to this sector, of which ipcm® Protective Coatings will be a media partner. The development starts from the private companies that devote many resources to create products and technologies able to ensure a longer service life, require less maintenance and minimise, thus reducing to almost zero, the risks associated with the oil and gas activities.

Fairs, industry associations and magazines, in turn, play their role in making these developments known and, most of all, in training these companies’ staff.

This issue of ipcm® Protective Coatings, besides presenting the usual variety of articles devoted to the corrosion protection technologies (from metal to concrete, up to the naval sector), focuses precisely on the oil and gas industry. It includes some articles on the new coating technologies for this sector as well as a presentation of all the events and training courses dealing with corrosion among their main topics.

n questi ultimi mesi del 2014 l’industria dell’oil&gas è sotto la lente.

I rischi economici e geopolitici continuano ad avere un forte impatto sull’industria del gas e del petrolio. La minaccia di nuove sanzioni occidentali, l’aspirazione dei consumatori europei a ridurre la loro dipendenza dalle risorse energetiche russe e la volatilità dei prezzi del petrolio (che proprio mentre scrivo queste righe è ai minimi storici) sui mercati globali sono solo alcuni dei fattori di incertezza che pesano sul settore e che influenzano pesantemente l’economia globale.

Per il settore dei rivestimenti protettivi, quello dell’oil&gas è uno dei campi applicativi strategici, un settore in cui la maggioranza delle aziende produttrici concentra i propri sforzi di ricerca&sviluppo. Questo perché l’estrazione e il trasporto di gas e di petrolio includono una tale quantità di variabili e di rischi connessi ad ambiente, salute e sicurezza da rendere i rivestimenti protettivi una sorta di “polizza assicurativa” contro disastri ambientali, perdite di vite umane e danni economici causati dal cedimento prematuro delle strutture offshore, onshore, sommerse e interrate a causa della corrosione.

Nel primo quadrimestre del 2015 numerosi saranno gli eventi e le fiere dedicate a questo settore, manifestazioni di cui ipcm® Protective Coatings sarà media partner. Lo sviluppo parte dalle aziende private che destinano molte risorse a mettere a punto prodotti e tecnologie in grado di essere sempre più duraturi, richiedere meno manutenzione e minimizzare fino a quasi ridurre allo zero i rischi connessi alle attività nell’oil&gas.

Fiere, associazioni di settore e riviste giocano invece il proprio ruolo della divulgazione di questi sviluppi e soprattutto nella formazione del personale addetto.

Questo numero di ipcm® Protective Coatings, oltre a presentare la consueta varietà di articoli legati alle tecnologie di protezione dalla corrosione (dal metallo al calcestruzzo fino al settore navale), ha un focus proprio sull’oil&gas e propone alcuni articoli su nuove tecnologie per i rivestimenti destinati a questo settore nonché un approfondimento su tutti gli eventi e i corsi di formazione che hanno fra i loro argomenti principali l’anticorrosione.

What is a PJM?

Che cos’e’ un PJM?

As requested in good project specifications, a pre-job meeting (PJM), attended by all the professional figures involved in the project, is necessary before the start of any coating project.

This type of meeting is actually very different from the typical safety briefing where the behavioural aspects, to follow during all working phases and dictated by the safety regime, are clarified. Although the PJM meeting is generally called by the Owner, the Contract Company sometimes happens to be the promoter. The sole aim of a PJM meeting is to ensure that all the Project participants (in particular Contract Staff, Contractors, Sub Contractors, Inspectors and Coating Suppliers) are fully aware and can understand the project technical specification and the various contractual documents.

Prima dell’inizio di un qualsiasi progetto di pitturazione, come richiesto da una buona specifica di progetto, è necessario effettuare un pre-job meeting (PJM) dove tutte le figure professionali coinvolte nel progetto stesso devono essere presenti.

Questo genere di meeting infatti, è molto differente dai classici briefing di sicurezza nei quali vengono chiariti gli aspetti comportamentali dettati da un regime di sicurezza da seguire durante tutte la fasi di lavoro. Il PJM meeting generalmente viene “chiamato” e presieduto dal proprietario, anche se a volte può accadere che il promotore sia la Società Contrattista, al fine unico di garantire che tutti i componenti del Progetto, in particolare modo Contrattisti, Appaltatori, Sub Appaltatori, Ispettori e Produttori di Pitture, siano a piena conoscenza e possano comprendere la specifica tecnica di progetto ed i vari documenti contrattuali.

The person that organises and calls the PJM is expected to establish a technical work agenda, containing a clear and defined order of the day that must be communicated to all the participants before the meeting itself.

This allows the Inspector to introduce and discuss important issues that must be considered and that, for some reason, have not been included in the project specification.

The same person in charge, designated by the Owner or the Company, should record the working times during the PJM. Actually the certified Inspector is often asked to carry out this activity because he is considered the maximum expert on the project. On the other hand it is very important to ensure that the Inspector can engage a full technical discussion aimed to eliminate and dispel any technical or behavioural doubt, ensuring he and his collaborators can successfully complete the project. Particular attention must be dedicated to disputes resolution and the Inspector must ensure that the meeting minutes contain the clarifications provided during the discussions as well as his personal notes.

La persona che organizza e chiama il PJM, è tenuta a stabilire un’agenda tecnica di lavoro comprendente un ordine del giorno chiaro e definito, da comunicare a tutti coloro che vi parteciperanno prima della riunione stessa. Ciò permette all’Ispettore di introdurre e discutere elementi importanti che dovranno essere adottati e che, per un motivo o per l’altro, non sono stati inseriti nella specifica di progetto. La stessa persona competente, designata dal Proprietario o dalla Company dovrebbe registrare i tempi di lavoro durante il PJM, infatti spesso e volentieri, proprio perché considerato il massimo esperto di lavoro nel progetto, l’Ispettore certificato viene delegato a tale attività quando invece è importante lasciare piena discussione tecnica all’ispettore, al fine di chiarire e dissipare qualunque dubbio tecnico comportamentale che permetta a lui stesso ed ai suoi collaboratori la buona riuscita del progetto. Particolare attenzione deve essere rivolta alla controversia delle problematiche e l’ispettore deve garantire che, oltre alle sue note personali, vengano verbalizzati anche i chiarimenti di dette discussioni.

WHAT IS DISCUSSED DURING A PJM? The answer is simple: “The Project Technical Specification, and all the documents it refers to, must be reviewed, discussed, modified and finally accepted”, as described below: • Discussion of “health, environmental and safety issues (SAFETY HES)” and of “the minimum acceptance requirements”, focusing on those concerning specific works in a given area.

• Clarification on all the emergency procedures (escape routes, meeting points, identification of emergency tones, etc.).

• Review and discussion of the amount of work to be produced (SOW).

• Logistical support.

• Discussion of the line communication between all the parts involved (Who does What).

• Highlighting and discussion of all the possible critical dangers.

• Preparation of a contacts critical list (POCS) • Discussion of and clarification on the responsibilities and the authority of the Third Party Certified Inspector.

• Explanation of and clarification on the “chain of command”, that is, precisely pointing out the command positions.

• Discussion of and clarification on all areas of interest in the project specifications checking any possible omission, test, etc.

• Agreement on critical points (Hot Points) for the planned inspections.

• Resolution of any possible dispute between the Inspector and the Applicator.

• Orders’ change.

COSA SI DISCUTE DURANTE UN PJM? La risposta è semplice: “si deve rivedere, discutere, modificare ed infine accettare la Specifica Tecnica di Progetto e tutti i documenti in essa citati”, come di seguito descritti: • Discussione delle problematiche che trattano “salute, sicurezza e ambiente (SAFETY HES)” ed i “requisiti minimi di accettabilità”, in particolare quelle che riguardano uno specifico lavoro in un determinato ambiente.

• Chiarimenti di tutte le procedure di emergenza (vie di fuga, punti di ritrovo, identificazioni dei suoni di allarme, etc).

• Revisione e discussione delle entità dei lavori da effettuare (SOW).

• Supporto logistico.

• Discussione delle comunicazioni di linea tra le tutte le parti coinvolte (Chi fa Cosa).

• Evidenziazione e discussione di tutti i possibili pericoli critici.

• Preparare un elenco critico di contatti (POCS).

• Discutere e chiarire le responsabilità e l’autorità dell’Ispettore Certificato terza Parte.

• Spiegare e chiarire la “catena di comando”, ossia precisare esattamente le posizioni di comando.

• Discutere e chiarire tutte le aree di interesse nelle specifiche di progetto e valutare eventuali omissioni, test, e così via.

• Concordare punti critici (Hot Points) per le ispezioni programmate.

• Risoluzione degli eventuali conflitti tra l’ispettore e l’applicatore.

• Modifica degli ordini.

• Planning of works: start and end of works, working days and daily hours and / or shifts, holiday periods and so on.

• Access to site, person in charge and person agreeing on his presence on the working site.

• Acceptable transportation methods.

• Clarification on the site responsibilities, person in charge for the supply of the office areas and of the structures and services supporting the Applicator and the Inspector/s.

• Communication systems: use of land line telephone, radios, mobile phones, e-mails, etc.

• Access to working areas, and corresponding instructions, for the execution of the various inspections (scaffolding, pontoons, access platforms, stairs, mechanical climbers, etc.).

• Types of Coatings and Coating Systems used, minimum and maximum acceptance limits for the thickness of the applied coating (DFT), above all in presence of “Stripe Coating” as well as “repair and remakes”.

• Equipment type to be used during inspections, equipment calibration criteria, etc.

• Set of reports covering the inspections performed by the Certified Coating Inspector, etc.

• Pianificazione dei lavori: inizio e fine lavori, giornate lavorative ed orari giornalieri e/o di turno, periodi di vacanze, e così via.

• Accesso al sito, chi ne è responsabile e chi ne avvalla la presenza nel sito lavorativo.

• Metodi di trasporto accettabili.

• Chiarimento della responsabilità del sito, chi ne è responsabile per la fornitura di spazi per uffici / strutture e servizi di supporto per l’applicatore e l’ispettore/i.

• Sistemi di comunicazione: uso di telefoni fissi, di radio, di telefoni cellulari, di e-mail, e così via.

• Accessi di lavoro per l’effettuazione delle varie ispezioni ed i relativi sistemi di utilizzo (ponteggi, pontoni, trabatelli, scale, scalatori meccanici, e così via).

• Tipi di Pitture e Cicli di Pitture utilizzati, Limiti di accettazione dello spessore (DFT) delle pitture applicate (minimo e massimo), soprattutto in presenza di “Stripe Coating” e di “riparazioni e rifacimenti”.

• Tipi di strumentazioni utilizzati nelle ispezioni, criteri di taratura degli strumenti, e così via.

• Reportistica di tutte le Ispezioni effettuate dall’ispettore di pitturazione certificato, e così via.

The importance of PJM

Regardless the efforts spent to organise a PJM, there could be cases when a project (generally concerning a small job) might start not having performed a PJM. In these cases the Inspector is expected and is responsible for verifying that the Contract Staff has clearly understood the project specifications. He must also put any necessary effort to amend any error or ambiguity. We should remember that a “perfect specification” will never exist and therefore any “compromise” may be made only if the Owner (or the Company) agrees on it.

Indipendentemente dagli sforzi spesi per organizzare un PJM, ci potrebbero essere delle volte in cui un progetto (generalmente riguardante lavori di piccola entità), possa partire senza avere effettuato il PJM. In questi casi è compito, anzi responsabilità dell’Ispettore accertarsi che il Contrattista abbia compreso chiaramente la specifica di progetto e che faccia tutti gli sforzi necessari per correggere qualsiasi errore o ambiguità.

It is worth reminding, as anticipated at the beginning, that the PJM is usually requested by the Owner (or the Company) with the aim of gathering all the interested parts. This is very important because this is usually the sole meeting opportunity that the team (the group) will have for the whole duration of the project.

Furthermore this is the sole time when all doubts and uncertainties can be clarified, and roles can be understood and explained. If the meeting does not take place, those problems will propose again during the works execution leading to discussions that will inevitably delay works implying money loss.

PJM arrangement can be very formal or informal.

For example, it can be organised in the meeting room of the Company board but also in a tiny site office.

In most cases the Owner or the “Company” calling the meeting will want to chair it as president. Team work is an essential factor in order to achieve success in any project.

E’ utile ribadire, come già anticipato all’inizio, che il PJM è solitamente richiesto dal proprietario (o dalla Company) nel tentativo di avere presente tutte le parti interessate, ciò è molto importante perché è di solito è l’unica opportunità che il team (gruppo) avrà durante tutto il progetto. Inoltre è l’unico momento in cui tutti i dubbi, le incertezze, le comprensioni ed il chiarimento dei ruoli possono essere chiariti; qualora non lo si potesse fare tali problematiche si riproporrebbero durante tutto lo sviluppo dei lavori, con conseguenti discussioni che porterebbero ad inevitabili ritardi operativi e perdita di denaro.

L’impostazione del PJM può essere molto formale o informale, per dare un esempio può essere fatta nella sala riunioni del consiglio di Amministrazione della Company ma anche in un minuscolo ufficio di cantiere. Nella maggior parte dei casi, il proprietario o la Company “chiamando” la riunione, vorrà presiedere come presidente. Il lavoro di squadra è un fattore essenziale per il raggiungimento del successo di qualsiasi progetto.

Who should take part to the PJM?

Chi deve partecipare al PJM

No inspector solely relying on his capabilities, on his own and without the support of all the other involved professional figures may achieve the success of a determined project.

Therefore the PJM requirements must be described in the project specifications or in the contractual documents.

The following professional figures must be invited: • The Owner or the Company or his Delegate.

• Those in charge of the contract or their Delegates.

• The Project Engineer or his Delegate.

• The Specifier, in other words, the person that has produced the project specifications.

• The operative Staff.

• The Coating Supplier (preferably technical staff representing the service).

• The NACE Level 3 Certified Coating Inspector.

• The Coating Inspectors from the Company, the Applicator and the Coating Factory • The Project Safety Staff.

• The Coatings’ Applicator.

Nessun ispettore nella sua esclusiva capacità può realizzare, da solo, il successo di un determinato progetto, senza l’appoggio di tutte le altre figure professionali coinvolte. Come tale, i requisiti per il PJM, devono essere descritti nelle specifiche di progetto o nei documenti contrattuali. Le figure professionali che devono essere invitate sono le seguenti: • Il proprietario o la Company o un suo Delegato.

• I Responsabili del contratto o loro Delegati.

• L’Ingegnere di Progetto o un suo Delegato.

• Lo Specificatore, ossia colui che ha preparato la specifica di progetto.

• Il Personale operativo.

• Il Produttore della Pitture (preferibilmente personale tecnico rappresentante del servizio).

• L’Ispettore di pitturazione certificato NACE terzo livello.

• Gli Ispettori di Pitturazione della Company, dell’Applicatore e del Colorificio.

In conclusion, it is worth restating that the PJM, although generally considered a “useless meeting”, is actually the sole real discussion moment available and required by a good project specification aiming to provide correct information on roles and responsibilities to all the professional figures involved in a coating work.

s is to be expected of one of the most complex civil works projects to be undertaken this decade, safety and environmental protection are key factors in the construction of the new north-south high speed rail link along Galicia’s Atlantic seaboard in north-west Spain, due for completion in 2015.

Building of the southern terminus in Vigo progresses non-stop on a giant plot of land in the centre of this busy sea-port.

There are plans for the high speed connection to A Coruña in the north to be in operation within a year, and for a southbound link that will eventually run through Portugal to Lisbon.

The new Vigo station is an ambitious project built on several levels – the actual train terminus will be underground, while above it, 180 retail outlets are being erected over a surface area of 35,000 m2.

ome c’è da aspettarsi nel caso di uno dei progetti di edilizia civile più complessi intrapresi in questo decennio, la sicurezza e la tutela dell’ambiente sono fattori chiave nella costruzione della nuova linea ferroviaria ad alta velocità nord-sud lungo la costa atlantica della Galizia, nel nord-ovest della Spagna, il cui completamento è previsto per il 2015.

La costruzione della stazione capolinea meridionale a Vigo progredisce senza sosta su un gigantesco appezzamento di terreno nel centro di questo trafficato porto di mare. I piani prevedono l’entrata in servizio della linea ad alta velocità per La Coruña, nel nord del paese, entro un anno e quindi di una nuova tratta in direzione sud fino a Lisbona, in Portogallo.

La nuova stazione di Vigo è un progetto ambizioso, su più livelli – la stazione capolinea sarà sotterranea, mentre in superficie sono in fase di costruzione 180 punti vendita su un’area di 35.000 m2.

The technical speciďŹ cation of the metal structure, comprising 8,000 m2 of steel sections, requires it to have high ďŹ re resistance (Fig. 1). HEMPACORE ONE 43600 is a one-component, solvent-borne, acrylic intumescent coating that provides both indoor and outdoor steel structures with up to 120 minutes’ passive protection against cellulose ďŹ res.

HEMPACORE ONE FD 43601 is the fast-drying version of HEMPACORE ONE 43600, speciďŹ ed for in-shop application, and both reactive coatings have the same composition except for the solvents that evaporate out of the end use product.

Both HEMPACORE ONE and HEMPACORE ONE FD are certiďŹ ed under standards EN13381-8 and BS476-21 and are approved by ETA 12/0581 to bear the CE mark and CertiďŹ re certiďŹ cate n° CF 5146. They are high-solids, low-VOC white paints which dry to touch in 35 minutes and dry to handle in 8 hours.

HEMPATHANE HS 55810 is a two-component, high-solids, low-VOC polyurethane enamel that provides remarkable gloss and colour retention. In the UK, it has been approved under Network Rail SpeciďŹ cation NR/L3/CN7 number 7.3.1 as a long-lasting topcoat for both new buildings and repairs.

This completely safe and easy to use coating cures to a soft film and eventually hardens. It is very efficient in SO2 and H2S environments. The product leaves a translucent, waxy coating that is easily removable, it is low in VOC’s and dilutable with water. VpCI®-389 can be easily removed with alkaline cleaners, such as Cortec® VpCI®-414. It is available in ready-to-use form - VpCI®-389 D (1:1). Metals protected are: Aluminum, steels, cast iron, copper alloys and tin plated steel.

Il prodotto lascia un rivestimento semitrasparente e ceroso che è facilmente rimovibile, presenta un basso livello di emissioni ed è diluibile in acqua. VpCI®-389 può essere facilmente rimosso con detergenti alcalini come il Cortec® VpCI®-414. É disponibile in formato pronto all’uso - VpCI®-389 D (1:1). I metalli che può proteggere sono: alluminio, acciaio, ghisa, leghe di rame e acciaio ricoperto di stagno.

Traditional coatings rely on sacrificial metals (zinc, chromates, aluminum) for inhibition. Due to the large particle size of these inhibitors, gaps exist which allow corrosion to start and eventually expand, causing coating failure. Cortec® VpCI®-389 coating uses the patented VpCI® technology to protect the metal substrate with a tight bonding molecular structure. ExxonMobil-Qatar-Edison Snamprogetti Srl needed to prevent the progression of corrosion to the interior of 1300 pipes stored for several months in an outdoor harsh environment. VpCI®-389 was applied to the cut-back of pipes and the pipes were covered with Cortec’s VpCI® 126 film. The corrosion problem was successfully solved.

With the introduction of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology in Oman, Cyclic Steam Injection (CSI) has become an effective thermal recovery process. Several driving mechanisms, including viscosity reduction, wettability alteration and gas expansion, influence the successful recovery of heavy oil.

Steam slurry pipelines are often exposed to high internal abrasion of the pipe wall caused by the movement of water and oil residue slurry through the line. With the effective

Il rivestimento interno delle pipeline è necessario non solo per fornire protezione dalla corrosione ma anche per ridurre l’attrito, migliorare l’efficacia della portata durante il trasporto dei reflui acquosi corrosivi e fornire un’adeguata protezione dalla corrosione durante il successivo trasporto del greggio recuperato (figg. 1 e 2). Le specifiche di progettazione del rivestimento devono essere in grado di resistere alle temperature elevate raggiunte dall’iniezione di vapore durante il ciclo. Il principale contractor che effettuava la manutenzione e le operazioni del processo EOR per il recupero del petrolio nel giacimento prescelto era anche sottoposto ad una forte pressione per ridurre l’attrito e migliorare l’efficacia della portata del processo di recupero.

Il processo EOR e l’impianto sono in funzione dal 2010 e il rivestimento interno della tubatura è stato effettuato con vernici epossidiche liquide e vernici FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) nei diversi segmenti della pipeline (fig. 3).

use of technology, the wastewater pumped out from the reservoir is processed through a wastewater treatment facility, which enables the water to be reused.

Internal coating of the pipelines is required to not only provide corrosion protection, but also reduce friction and improve flow efficiency when conveying corrosive water slurry, and to offer adequate corrosion protection during subsequent transportation of recovered crude oil (Figs. 1 and 2). The lining design specification has to withstand elevated temperatures at which the steam injection is flowed through the cycle. The main contractor undertaking the maintenance and operations of the EOR process for oil recovery at the designated Field was therefore under great pressure to reduce the friction and improve flow efficiency of the recovery process.

The EOR process and the plant have been in operation since 2010 and the internal pipe coating had been carried out using a liquid epoxy coating and Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) in the different pipeline 2 segments (Fig. 3).

Back to the Drawing Board One of the alternatives which was initially considered in 2010 but decided against in favour of FBE and liquid epoxy was a modified epoxy novolac system, Belzona 1391S. That exact novolac system was already successfully used between 2010 and 2013 to mitigate localized damage caused by failing FBE. Moreover, due to existing approvals from various Oil and Gas companies specifying this manufacturer’s materials for internal lining of pipelines and tanks, the operator reopened negotiations with its Oman supplier, AOTC.

Trialing the New Solution

The first step was to ensure all relevant approvals were completed. The industry is not always keen to accept novel solutions due to their familiarity with conventional options, in this case FBE and liquid epoxy. Moreover, the contracting team was in favour of FBE and coating due to increased CAPEX associated with the new system. Examples of reduced OPEX presented during several technical presentations to the consultant were the turning point. The consultant team wanted performance assurance and proposed to do a trial application in the middle of 2012 and then inspect the pipelines after the lining’s first year in service.

Inspection of the repaired pipes was carried out in June 2013 and results were described as “tremendous”. Erosion of the lining was negligible and the pipe was in great condition for operations.

Based on the outcome of this trial, Belzona 1391S was approved for their expansion project and the application for a 10,000 m2 area of pipelines was initiated. The product was approved to minimize pipeline internal corrosion and to protect them from elevated temperatures.

Il settore non è sempre entusiasta di accogliere nuove soluzioni a causa della familiarità con le scelte tradizionali, in questo caso le FBE e le epossidiche liquide. Inoltre, l’appaltatore era favorevole al rivestimento FBE a causa dell’aumento delle spese per capitale (CAPEX – CAPital EXpenditure) che il nuovo sistema avrebbe comportato.

Gli esempi di riduzione di spesa presentati durante le diverse dimostrazioni tecniche al consulente responsabile sono stati il punto di svolta.

Il gruppo di consulenza ha richiesto una garanzia delle prestazioni e ha proposto di effettuare un’applicazione di prova a metà 2012 per poi eseguire un controllo delle pipeline dopo il primo anno di attività del lining.

L’ispezione sulle pipeline riparate è stata eseguita nel giugno 2013 e i risultati definiti “straordinari”. L’erosione del lining era trascurabile e la tubatura era in ottime condizioni per poter funzionare.

In base all’esito di questa prova, Belzona 1391S è stato omologato per il progetto di ampliamento dell’azienda ed è iniziata la sua applicazione su un’area di 10.000 m2 di tubature. Il prodotto è stato approvato per ridurre la corrosione interna delle pipeline e proteggerle dalle temperature elevate.

More Challenges Faced The application for the expansion project commenced in July 2013 and was completed in July 2014.

The application was performed at a designated site by a local coating company in Oman. The lining manufacturer in turn was instrumental in supplying the initial technical know-how. In order to maintain high standards, a team of applicators was trained at the site and NACE certified inspector was present to coordinate inspection.

The challenging part of the application was the blasting of the small diameter pipelines (Fig. 4). The painting contractor introduced the application of a 360° blasting nozzle for its ease of use and the ability to achieve the required profile

Le nuove sfide affrontate L’applicazione per il progetto di ampliamento è cominciata nel luglio 2013 ed è stata completata nel luglio 2014. È stata eseguita nel sito prescelto da un’azienda omanita di verniciatura.

A sua volta, il produttore del lining è stato determinante nel fornire il know-how tecnico iniziale. Allo scopo di mantenere standard elevati, un gruppo di applicatori è stato formato sul luogo e un ispettore certificato NACE ha presenziato per coordinare l’ispezione.

La parte più impegnativa dell’applicazione è stata la sabbiatura delle pipeline di piccolo diametro (fig. 4). Il verniciatore ha introdotto l’applicazione di ugelli di sabbiatura a 360° per sua comodità d’uso e per la possibilità di ottenere le caratteristiche di applicazione richieste. La sfida più grande affrontata dal terzista è

Spray applied modified novolac system is not designed for manual application and uniform thickness could not be achieved. The variance in film thickness was unaccepted by the client’s inspection team and a new application method had to be adopted.

The answer to this problem came in the form of a spin spraying system. In operation, a rotating head powered by an air motor sprays paint at an evenly metered flow against the surface.

The equipment is pulled through the pipe at a pre-determined speed based on the paint film thickness and type of coating.

The use of the spin spray technique was beneficial for the contractor in terms of minimising application costs and completing the job on time.

In pratica, una testa rotante alimentata da un motore pneumatico spruzza la vernice sulla superficie con un getto dosato in modo uniforme. L’apparecchiatura percorre tutta la tubatura ad una velocità predeterminata, basata sullo spessore del film di vernice e sul tipo di rivestimento.

L’impiego della tecnica di spruzzatura rotante è risultata vantaggiosa per il terzista per la riduzione dei costi di applicazione e per il completamento del lavoro nei tempi previsti.

A Favorable Outcome

To date, the application of the modified epoxy novolac system in mid 2013 is performing as expected and there have not been any instances of leakage or abrasion damage to the pipe. The NDT inspection for measuring the thickness of the pipes resulted in minimal change in the readings.

The project team is reportedly pleased with the outcome.

Successful case studies like this one are music to the ears of the Oil and Gas professionals who seek faster adaptation of new technologies by the industry, where consecutive favourable inspections act as undeniable proof that age old problems can indeed be solved with novel solutions.

he restoration of old industrial structures in steel and concrete is one of the most delicate operations in the field of protective and anti-corrosion coatings, which often presents variables that can affect the success of the work.

In fact, it is necessary to combine rapid processing times, so as not to stop the production activities within the structure for too long, with high quality results, in terms of both aesthetics and functions. Not to mention that, as stated before, different materials need to be treated, in different conditions and with inhomogeneous surface preparations. The solution can be the use of a versatile coating, suitable for both substrates even in the presence

Presentiamo qui di seguito il caso di un lavoro è eseguito a Trieste, presso Siderurgica Triestina, azienda operante nel settore della produzione e trasformazione della ghisa: si tratta del recupero dei capannoni dell’ ex acciaieria del complesso siderurgico Ferriera di Servola in Trieste (rif. foto d’apertura).

Here below, we present the case of a job performed in Trieste, Italy, at the premises of Siderurgica Triestina, a company operating in the field of cast iron production and processing: the recovery of the structures of the former steel plant belonging to the steel complex Ferriera di Servola, based in Trieste (ref. opening photo). The work was performed between September and November by the well-established company of MVI srl, based in Cremona. It has used coating products supplied

by Camerini & C., a firm based in Sesto ed Uniti (CR) that, since 1922, has been creating anti-corrosion paints approved by the main contractors in the road (ANAS, Società Autostrade), rail (RFI, Ferrovie dello Stato) and energy sectors (ENEL, Terna).

The preparation of the surfaces, equal to about 85,000 m2 – 75 thousand of metal structure (Fig. 1) and about 10 thousand of inner walls (Fig. 2) – was carried out with a high-pressure water cleaning process in order to remove both the traces of old paint and the existing contamination, such as salts and slags from the steel processing operations carried out in the plant (Fig. 3).

The choice of the coating product to be employed for the restoration of the external and internal surfaces fell on a self-priming, surface tolerant product with a 73% dry residue. It ensures high thicknesses in one coat as well as the possibility of working on wet surfaces. Also available for temperatures below 0°C, it combines the characteristics of both primers and finishes.

Specifically, the product is EPOGRIFOS 7320, a twocomponent epoxy coating with good anticorrosive and water resistance properties, even under severe exposure to atmospheric agents; it presents good adhesion on

Refining reaction times

The second strand of Huntsman’s work has focused on the creation of a slower reacting prepolymer. The company’s aim for this project was to help formulators create polyurea systems that are easier to use and formulate, and more cost efficient. Anyone that has worked with polyurea knows that it has a very fast reaction time. Typically, just a few seconds is the standard time available to applicators giving them a very small window to work in.

Slowing down reaction times can be extremely advantageous.

Polyurea can flow better and adhesion can be improved. It also becomes easier to spray objects with a complex geometry and / or at a variable distance between gun and substrate – even in adverse weather conditions. Lower reactivity also reduces and minimizes the risk for overspray, and can enhance the overall finish quality.

Traditionally, slowing down polyurea reaction times has meant compromising performance properties (through the use of lower NCOv prepolymers, the use of hybrid resins and/or addition of diluents) or adversely affecting the associated cost of the product.

Until now, the most common approach has been to use amine chain extenders to slow down the reaction time – an expensive route.

Using its knowledge of isocyanates, Huntsman has created a prepolymer that can increase gel time from three seconds to around six or seven. The company has achieved this without the use of slow chain extenders and without affecting key performance properties. The new isocyanate can be sprayed in the same way as a standard prepolymer and the resulting polyurea performs similarly in terms of tensile strength, abrasion, angle tear and elongation.

Huntsman’s next generation, differentiated, functional isocyanates are all still at the pre-commercial stage and further development work and testing is ongoing. As the new chemistries approach the end of the development cycle and enter the market place, there are clear signs that they will become valuable building blocks in the toolkit of coatings manufacturers worldwide – giving them extra flexibility for tailoring their own formulations and proving that there are still plenty of possibilities for innovation with polyurea.

ppropriate secondary containment (Fig. 1) has long been a legal requirement in many countries, particularly around tanks, storage vessels and other plant equipment containing hazardous liquids. Regulations (such as the Control of Pollution Regulations 2001 in England) are enacted to establish preventative measures.

By not complying with these regulations, companies run the risk of being heavily fined, sometimes to the extent of incurring criminal proceedings. As an example, a malt producer was fined £20K for an oil fuel leak polluting the River Larkin in Suffolk, United Kingdom.

The company spent a further £100K on the clean-up and maintenance costs.

Concrete bunds are commonly used as secondary containment systems to protect the environment from spills of corrosive and toxic chemicals. Concrete is cost-effective and provides good structural strength, however, due to its porosity, can be easily permeated and has poor chemical resistance, making it susceptible to deterioration through chemical attack. In addition, concrete is highly prone to cracking due to substrate movement and freeze-thaw cycles.

- Corrosion of reinforcement - corrosion from steel rebar can induce stresses, greater than the tensile strength of the concrete.

- Excellent overall chemical resistance.

- Good adhesion to concrete and steel.

- Solvent-free.

- Low surface bloom and good cure over a range of ambient temperatures.

- Application by brush.

Secondary containment protection solutions typically possess only one or two of the three properties required for continuous performance: Resistance to penetration, resistance to chemical attack and resistance to movement.

Conventional chemical resistant coatings have high crosslink density (Fig. 3).

They are rigid and inflexible due to difficult to break bonds, yet offer a good 3 chemical resistance barrier due to their relative 3 impermeability. Development took over four years due to long-term chemical testing. Ruckseeta Patel, R&D Chemist who led the development of the new coating, commented: “Prior to releasing a new material to the market, we ensure that it is thoroughly tested. This coating was tested against a very broad range of chemicals at various concentrations and we are very happy with the results. Some independent testing will also continue for another 18 months”. Based on the initial feedback the system is expected to become a welcomed solution to replace coating systems that currently exhibit cracking.

The new coating system is titled Belzona 4361 (Fig. 5) and combines the desired chemical properties with the sufficient flexibility to remain intact if a crack appears in the underlying substrate, due to the incorporation of flexible segments in the polymer chain (Fig. 6).

Put it to the test!

In order to ascertain its suitability for protecting bunds from chemical attack, the new coating was subjected to a series of tests over four years.

Flexibility Tests Elongation was measured in accordance with ASTM D412 and recorded at 20% when cured at 20°C/68°F. To ensure the coating maintains its flexibility at low temperatures, a test in accordance with ASTM D552 was performed, resulting in a pass at temperatures down to 0°C/32°F. A bend test (Fig. 7) was also performed, where the steel test panel was bent at a 90˚ angle. Visual inspection showed no signs of cracking (Ref. opening photo).

Test panels were immersed in specified chemicals for the duration of one year (Table 1).

The WHG Approval is part of a German water law for protecting surface water and groundwater. Only secondary chemical containment coatings with WHG Approval can be used in areas where strict regulations are in place in order to protect potable water against chemical pollutants.

The testing takes two years to complete and Belzona 4361 passed a key milestone - the first six months of testing. WHG presents a rigorous independent testing and the results will be equally relevant in Europe and globally.

n the last few years, the powder coating systems have consolidated as a valid alternative to the existing anti-corrosion liquid paints. Several factors have contributed to this evolution: - development of primers able to improve the corrosion protection performance and specifically developed for each type of surface; - investments made by coaters in adequate mechanical treatment systems for the surface preparation (sand blasting/shot blasting); - increase in the size of the plants for workpieces with lengths over 10 metres.

This has led the powder coatings to play an increasingly important role and erode the market shares of the traditional solvent-based systems, with ample room for further growth.

The conventional benefits of powder coatings have reinforced this trend: the economical and ecological aspects, among others, are factors that made the switch to them even more convenient.

Compared to liquid paints, the economic advantages of powder coatings are as follows: - less time to perform a job, especially with multiple coat systems; - less space required during the drying stages; - less handling of the parts; - greater application efficiency; - overspray recovery; - ease of application.

Some applicators are showing particular interest in mixed systems in which the powder coating is used for the priming of the surface (primer or primer + intermediate layer), while a liquid coating can be used as a top coat. This could be needed when the finish is to be applied after installation, at the production plant or on site. These systems have already been tested and can be created by combining Interpon powder primers with Cromadex liquid coatings.

Further developments concern the application of “dry on dry” primers and finishes. This method prevents the polymerisation of the primer before the application of the top coat: the two layers of paint are applied on one another in powder state, thus significantly reducing the time and cost of the process. The trade name attributed to this solution is Align.

The application fields of primers can be classified into four main areas: - metal structures (I-beams, structural components, fire stairs, etc.); - agricultural and earthmoving machinery, accessory machines; - industrial applications (engine-generators, bonnets, carters, electrical panels, etc.); - architecture (fences, grills, profiles for windows/security windows, expanded iron or aluminium mesh, outdoor lighting).

Even in terms of surfaces, we are witnessing a gradual expansion of the application field, which, starting from carbon steel, now includes: - galvanised steel; - galvanised coil; - extruded aluminium, die cast aluminium and aluminium coil.

The primers are also made with different formulations depending on the type of protection to be given to the surface in terms of durability as well as on the nature of the surface itself and its preparation. The three protection schemes identified are as follows: - passivation; - barrier effect; - cathodic protection, or cathodic protection + barrier effect for heavy duty applications (as, for example, oil platforms).

AkzoNobel has organised its offer of primers using the scheme introduced by the standard ISO 12944: by combining corrosion (Table 1) and durability categories, it is possible to provide the

Anche in termini di supporti si sta assistendo a un progressivo ampliamento dell’area di applicazione che, partendo dall’acciaio al carbonio, si è esteso ad: - acciaio zincato; - coil zincato; - alluminio estruso, pressofuso e coil.

I primer, a loro volta, sono stati realizzati con logiche formulative differenti in relazione al tipo di protezione da conferire al supporto, in termini di durabilità e anche in relazione alla natura del supporto e della preparazione superficiale. I tre schemi di protezione individuati sono: - passivazione; - effetto barriera; - protezione catodica, oppure protezione catodica + barriera per applicazioni heavy duty (come, per esempio, le piattaforme petrolifere).

MODULAR COURSE ON METAL CORROSION AND PROTECTION Corso modulare su corrosione e protezione dei metalli

he Corrosion Department of AIM, the Italian Society for Metallurgy, has organized a new edition of modular course dedicated to “Metal Corrosion and Protection” at the Association’s Headquarters (FAST Congress Centre) in Milan (Italy).

For twenty years the objective of the course has been offering a simple but complete overview of the interaction problems between materials and environment by supplying simple but qualified information on the key aspects of corrosion processes and methods used to reduce them.

The course is addressed both to the operators involved in any way in the corrosion prevention and control through research, project, management and maintenance activities for plants, equipment and structures and to the personnel responsible for the technical training of workers.

On the basis of the positive feedback of the previous editions, this year the course is divided in four modules, each one lasting two days: The participants can enrol in all modules or in each one singularly. Each module is divided in two days of frontal lessons in order to favour learning. At the end of the lessons, a discussion between teacher and participants on their practical problems or alternatively the presentation of practical cases of failure analysis will took place.

The first module will represent a general introduction of the corrosion topic and it will explain the main types of corrosion (general or localized), the features of aggressive environments to the main classes of metal materials used for structures and the best protection strategies.

The subsequent modules will be dedicated to: - Atmospheric corrosion and corrosion protection through the application of coatings (organic, metal and inorganic coatings).

- Corrosion in a marine environment, with a particular focus on structures operating in offshore environment, cathodic protection, localized corrosion (pitting and crevice) and environmental assisted cracking.

- Corrosion resistant alloys, with particular focus on challenging operative conditions because of high temperatures and the presence of aggressive substances such as acid gases. The aggressive environments of major importance and relevance for the industry will be treated.

l Centro di Studi Corrosione dell’AIM, Associazione Italiana Metallurgia, ha organizzato a Milano presso la sede dell’Associazione (Centro Congressi FAST) una nuova edizione del corso modulare dedicato alla “Corrosione e protezione dei metalli”.

Da oltre vent’anni il corso si pone l’obiettivo di offrire una semplice ma esaustiva panoramica delle problematiche d’interazione dei materiali con l’ambiente, offrendo informazioni semplici, ma qualificate, degli aspetti fondamentali dei processi di corrosione e dei metodi usati per la loro minimizzazione. Si rivolge ai tecnici che in qualunque modo siano coinvolti nella prevenzione e nel controllo della corrosione in attività di ricerca, progetto, gestione, manutenzione di impianti, macchine e strutture, e al personale addetto all’istruzione tecnica delle maestranze.

L’edizione di quest’anno, sulla base delle indicazioni positive delle scorse edizioni, è strutturata in quattro moduli di due giorni ciascuno, ai quali i partecipanti potranno iscriversi in blocco o singolarmente. Per favorire l’apprendimento ogni modulo è suddiviso in due giornate di lezioni frontali, al termine delle quali è previsto un confronto tra il docente e gli uditori sui problemi pratici degli stessi, o in alternativa la presentazione di casi pratici di failure analysis.

Il primo modulo sarà di introduzione generale alla corrosione, ed avrà il compito di illustrare le principali forme di corrosione (generalizzata e localizzata), le caratteristiche di aggressività degli ambienti rispetto alle principali classi di materiali metallici impiegati per usi strutturali e le migliori strategie di protezione.

I tre moduli successivi saranno dedicati a: - corrosione atmosferica e protezione dalla corrosione attraverso l’applicazione di rivestimenti, sia organici che metallici e inorganici; - corrosione in ambiente marino, con particolare riguardo alle strutture operanti in ambiente off-shore, alla protezione catodica, alla corrosione localizzata (pitting e crevice) e all’environmental assisted cracking (corrosione fatica e corrosione sotto sforzo); - leghe resistenti alla corrosione, con particolare riguardo a condizioni operative severe per temperature elevate e/o per la presenza di sostanze aggressive quali gas acidi. Verranno considerati gli ambienti aggressivi di maggiore importanza industriale o di attualità.

T

he long-standing co-operation between AIM - Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia - and the IFHTSE - International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering - has already led to the joint organisation of significant events, such as the Congresses held in Florence in 1982 and in 1998 and the Congress on automotive applications organized in Riva del Garda in 2005.

Now, their combined efforts will be focused on the organisation of a Conference that will deal with tradition and innovation in heat treatment and surface engineering. The Conference will join the “European Conference on Heat Treatment 2015” and the “22nd IFHTSE Congress”, and will be held in Venice mainland, at NH Laguna Palace (Venezia Mestre, Italy).

The Conference will bring together managers, engineers and researchers from heat treatment shops, tool makers and users, suppliers of heat treatment and surface engineering plant and equipment, as well as material scientists.

This meeting is aimed at creating an opportunity for a technical exchange at an international level among the numerous experts involved in the heat treatment and surface engineering route.

The Conference will cover the overall development of technologies in heat treatment and surface engineering, with particular focus on the following topics: - Thermo-chemical treatment (carburizing, nitriding, nitrocarburising, etc.)

- Surface hardening (induction, laser, etc.)

- Coating technology and coatings (PVD, CVD, plasma, thermal spray, etc.)

- Design and construction of industrial heat treatment equipment - Equipment for measurement and process control - Quenching technology, equipment and quenchants - Residual stress and distortion - Environmental impact of heat treatment - Environmental aspects of surface engineering - Tribology and tribological testing methods; wear and wear protection - Modeling and simulation of heat treatment and surface engineering related aspects - Reliability and process control

ià in passato la consolidata collaborazione fra l’Associazione Italiana di Metallurgia e IFHTSE – International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering – ha dato luogo a eventi di successo nel campo dei trattamenti termici, quali i congressi tenuti a Firenze del 1982 e del 1998, nonché la Conferenza “Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering on Automotive Applications” di Riva del Garda, nel 2005.

Le due associazioni uniranno nuovamente le proprie forze per l’organizzazione di una conferenza internazionale sui più recenti sviluppi e sulle innovazioni nei trattamenti termici e superficiali che accorperà in un unico appuntamento la “European Conference on Heat Treatment 2015” e il “22nd IFHTSE Congress”. La Conferenza si terrà dal 20 al 22 maggio 2015, presso NH Laguna Palace di Venezia Mestre.

L’evento costituirà una singolare occasione di incontro e di confronto su innovazione, tendenze e sviluppi del vasto mondo del trattamento termico dei metalli e sarà rivolta a tutti coloro che sono coinvolti nel settore dei trattamenti termici dei metalli e delle leghe metalliche, dagli imprenditori ai tecnici e agli operatori delle aziende di trattamento termico e di trattamento superficiale, dagli accademici e i ricercatori di scienza dei materiali e ingegneria metallurgica ai metallurgisti dei laboratori, dai produttori ai trasformatori e ai fornitori di metalli, leghe metalliche e semilavorati fino agli utilizzatori.

An International Steering Committee and an International Programme Committee of distinguished international professionals and researchers have been appointed, so as to guarantee the high quality of the event and a systematic and correct selection of the papers.

Having received more than 140 submission for presentation, we expect ECHT 2015 & 22 IFTHSE in Venice to be a vibrant and successful event.
