T

he global market is raising the bar of quality standards higher and higher, thus forcing the manufacturers to ensure the excellent quality of products and processes.

In order to ensure excellence, the companies need to make sure that all stages of their production cycle are properly executed and controlled.

Unfortunately, some of these stages are categorised as “special processes” – e.g. the joining of materials and the surface finishing – because it is possible to carry out quality audits only at the end of the process itself, through normed and standardised validation tests.

This is even more true for the anticorrosion coatings, since they directly affect the functionality and safety of use of an object over time, as well as the management of its aging and its conservation.

The whole coating process, therefore, has to be validated – from the drafting of the specifications and the definition of the test methods for the quality assessment to the identification and training of the control personnel or of a third party that can validate the effective compliance of the treatment to the quality specifications.

That is why the educational, training and technological discussion activities in the corrosion field are very fervent. In the coming months, three events will be held to discuss important scientific, technological and productive issues in the context of corrosion, corrosion prevention and materials protection.

Ipcm_Protective Coatings has chosen to be a media partner of all three of these events, aware that only targeted, high-level technical information can actively contribute to the spread of culture in this industry of strategic importance.

The first event is the tenth edition of the National Days on Corrosion, scheduled for July 10 to 12 in Naples, with a packed calendar of reports on corrosion, techniques for the study and control of the corrosive phenomena, coatings and surface treatments.

The second event is Eurocorr 2013, an international conference to be held in Estoril, Portugal on September 1 to 5 2013.

The third event is the national conference “Coating and corrosion protection of railway vehicles”, which eos Mktg&Communication is organising for November to introduce new technological innovations to protect the rolling stock against corrosion.

l mercato globale sta spostando l’asticella dei requisiti qualitativi richiesti a un manufatto sempre più in alto. Ciò obbliga le imprese a garantire una qualità dei propri prodotti e processi tendente all’eccellenza.

Per garantire questa eccellenza le imprese devono fare in modo che tutte le fasi del proprio ciclo produttivo siano correttamente eseguite e controllate. Purtroppo alcune di queste fasi sono categorizzate come “processi speciali” - ad esempio la giunzione di materiali o la finitura superficiale – perché non è possibile effettuare verifiche ispettive di qualità se non al termine del processo stesso attraverso prove di validazione normate e standardizzate.

Questo è ancora più vero per i rivestimenti mirati alla protezione dalla corrosione, dal momento che essi coinvolgono direttamente la funzionalità e la sicurezza d’uso del manufatto nel tempo, la gestione del suo invecchiamento e della sua conservazione.

La verniciatura quindi deve essere validata nella globalità del processo, dalla sua definizione attraverso capitolati e specifiche, alla definizione dei metodi di prova per la verifica qualitativa, fino all’individuazione o formazione del personale addetto alle verifiche, se non addirittura di una terza parte che possa validare l’effettiva rispondenza del trattamento alle specifiche di qualità richieste.

Per questo l’attività di informazione, formazione e discussione tecnologica nel settore della corrosione è molto fervida. Nei prossimi mesi si terranno tre eventi importanti per confrontarsi su questioni scientifiche, tecnologiche e produttive nell’ambito della corrosione, della sua prevenzione e della protezione dei materiali.

Ipcm_Protective Coatings ha scelto di essere media partner di tutti e tre questi eventi, consapevole che solo un’informazione mirata e di alto livello tecnico può contribuire attivamente alla diffusione della cultura in questo settore industriale di importanza strategica.

Il primo evento è la decima edizione delle Giornate Nazionali sulla Corrosione e Protezione, in programma dal 10 al 12 luglio a Napoli, con un calendario fitto di relazioni sui temi della corrosione, sulle tecniche di studio e controllo dei fenomeni corrosivi, sui rivestimenti e trattamenti superficiali.

Il secondo evento è Eurocorr 2013, congresso internazionale in programma a Estoril, Portogallo dall’1 al 5 settembre 2013.

Il terzo è il convegno nazionale “Verniciatura e protezione dalla corrosione dei veicoli ferroviari”che eos Mktg&Communication sta organizzando il prossimo novembre per presentare le innovazioni tecnologiche per salvaguardare dalla corrosione il materiale rotabile.

sectors requiring several square metres to be coated and where automatic systems are used, e.g. coil coating or car painting.

Although I do not know these fields very well, I took the liberty to do some checking on the thickness of the prepainted sheet used in our plant for doors and panels. Well, if we take the standard SSPC PA 2 as a reference for measuring the thicknesses applied on these sheets, the values will not fall within the limits. I have detected values between 25 and 46 μm, i.e. both lower than the minimum limit of 80% of the nominal value (37 μm) and slightly above the limit of 20% more.

I have also inquired about the coil coating technology: It is an automated process in which a smooth plate is painted through a roller applying the coating on the sheet while automatically regulating the layer thickness. If those differences in thickness are obtained with such a highly automated, continuous and regulated process, one wonders what were the reasons behind that maximum limit in the standard SSPC PA 2. Surely, the decision has been taken by people who have never painted in their life and who probably do not even know how to paint. Maybe they are environmentalists who have seen fit to put a limit on the emissions of solvent by reducing the thickness tolerance.

Actually, the only result they have achieved, in my opinion, has been to make the standard useless, since it is impossible to follow it. Such provision is to blame for creating a lot of non-compliance and providing customers with a weapon not to pay for the work performed or to force the applicator to costly extra work.

In the construction and in the oil & gas fields, the coating procedures are very different from those of the automatic plants. The structures to be painted are the most variable, from the beams of a bridge to a warehouse or a pipe rack, from supports of various kinds to pipelines for the transport of fluids or gas, from plates for tanks to process equipment, from valves to enclosures: The differences are significant both in shape and in size. The application method does not change much, contrary to the flow rate of the application equipment – from a few tenths of litres per second to tens of litres per second, if huge surfaces have to be treated or significant thicknesses have to be applied.

The application system is always manual, with or without air. The proper coverage of the surface to be coated, the total thickness and the possible defects both in the thickness and in the look, therefore, depend on the dexterity and experience of the coater. Anyhow, the paint reaches the surface with a ballistic, i.e. random, trajectory. Only the hand-eye coordination of the operator allows proper application of the coating, also creating all the necessary overlaps.

Pur non essendo settori che conosco bene, mi sono preso la libertà di fare qualche controllo sugli spessori di lamiera preverniciata che usiamo nel nostro stabilimento per il tamponamento di portoni e fascioni. Ebbene, se si prende come riferimento la norma SSPC PA 2 per la misura degli spessori applicati su queste lamiere, non si rientra nei limiti della norma stessa. Ho rilevato misure comprese fra i 25 e 46 μm che sono sia inferiori al limite minimo dell’80% dei 37 μm previsti dallo spessore nominale, sia leggermente superiori al limite massimo del 20% in più.

Mi sono poi informato sulla tecnologia di verniciatura coil: è un processo automatico in cui la lamiera liscia viene verniciata attraverso un rullo che stende sulla lamiera il prodotto verniciante, calibrandone automaticamente lo spessore. Se da un processo cosi altamente automatizzato, calibrato e continuo si ottengono quelle differenze di spessore finale, viene da chiedersi quali siano state le motivazioni del normatore per scrivere nella norma SSPC PA 2 la parte sugli spessori massimi. Sicuramente è una persona che non ha mai verniciato in vita sua e che probabilmente non sa nemmeno come si vernicia. Probabilmente é un ecologista convinto che ha pensato bene di mettere un limite alle emissioni di solvente riducendo la tollerabilità degli spessori. In realtà, l’unico risultato che ha raggiunto, a mio avviso, è stato quello di rendere inutile la norma, poiché è impossibile rispettarla. Una norma di questo tipo ha la colpa di creare moltissime non-conformità, fornendo ai clienti un’arma per non pagare i lavori eseguiti o per obbligare l’applicatore a costose rilavorazioni.

Nel settore delle costruzioni e dell’oil&gas le procedure di verniciatura sono molto diverse da quelle degli impianti automatici. Le strutture da verniciare sono le più diverse, dalle travi di un ponte a quelle di capannoni o pipe rack, dalla supporteria di vario genere ai tubi per il trasporto di fluidi o gas, dalle lamiere per serbatoi ad apparecchiature di processo, dalle valvole alle recinzioni: la variabilità è notevole sia come forma sia come dimensioni. La metodologia applicativa delle vernici non cambia molto, possono variare le portate delle apparecchiature di applicazione, da pochi decimi di litri al secondo a decine di litri al secondo, se si devono trattare superfici enormi o con spessori molto elevati.

Il sistema di applicazione è sempre manuale, con o senza aria. È nella manualità ed esperienza del verniciatore che risiede tutto il meccanismo legato alla corretta copertura della superficie da rivestire, allo spessore che ne risulterà, agli eventuali difetti sia di spessore sia di risultato finale. In ogni caso, la vernice arriva sulla superficie da trattare con una traiettoria di tipo balistico, ovvero casuale. Soltanto la coordinazione occhio-mano dell’applicatore permette di dirigere correttamente il ventaglio della vernice sulle superfici, creando anche tutte le sovrapposizioni necessarie.

The applicator has two subjective tools to assess the correctness of the application and of the thicknesses: - As a minimum limit, when the applied layer covers the surface evenly (wet effect); - As a maximum limit, when the applied layer drips from the painted surface.

An objective tool that can be used is the wet thickness gauge, a comb with teeth of different heights allowing to know what is the wet thickness applied. To calculate the dry thickness, i.e. the value to be obtained in compliance with the standard, the percentage of solvent that is going to evaporate must be subtracted from the wet thickness. For example, by applying a wet thickness of 100 μm with a product with a 60% dry residue, we will get a dry thickness of 60μm. This, however, can be measured only after letting the product dry (evaporation of the solvent) and/or polymerise (in the case of two-component products hardening through a catalyst). The use of the wet thickness gauge is common especially when new paint products are introduced that the operator does not know. In all other cases, the applicators normally trust their intuition much more than the wet thickness gauge, also because, in order to use this tool, one has to continually interrupt the coating process.

However, what matters for the purposes of the standard we are discussing is the dry thickness. No need to be an expert to understand that, due to the several different products overlapping, as well as to the complex geometry of the structures to be painted, the dry film thickness can be very variable. To support our thesis, we have performed several thickness tests on different structures painted with a coat of primer on a sandblasted surface. The thickness tests have been carried out by stretching a virtual grid on the structure where the points on which the measurements had to be performed were equidistant and covered the entire surface, including, for example in the case of an H beam, both vertical and horizontal surfaces.

The standard SSPC PA 2 does not provide for the use of this grid, but for a sample measurement. For example, for 10 m2 of surface treated, this standard requires five measures (each one calculated based on the average of three close readings) that are representative of the entire sample surface. In our case, however, the virtual grid was necessary to obtain a statistically valid and uniform sample on all surfaces. The grid points were located 5 cm apart from each other and, therefore, the number of measurements performed was very high (400 measurements on a 400x400 mm plate). The goal of our measurement criterion was different from that of the standard, because we needed to know how the paint layer is distributed on the surface and thus build a graph (a Gaussian, or bell, curve) allowing us to identify some rules or repetitive behaviours depending on the geometry of the surfaces painted and on the thickness applied.

L’operatore possiede due strumenti soggettivi per valutare la correttezza dell’applicazione e degli spessori: - come limite minimo quando lo strato applicato copre la superficie in modo uniforme (effetto bagnato); - come limite massimo quando lo strato applicato cola dal supporto verniciato.

Uno strumento oggettivo è lo spessimetro a umido, un pettine dotato di denti di altezze diverse e scalari che permettono di conoscere qual è lo spessore umido applicato. Per risalire allo spessore secco, ossia il valore da ottenere secondo la norma, si deve sottrarre dallo spessore umido la percentuale di solvente che evaporerà in un secondo tempo. Ad esempio, applicando uno spessore a umido di 100 μm con un prodotto che ha un residuo secco in volume del 60%, otterremo uno spessore secco di 60 μm. Questo potremo però misurarlo solo dopo aver lasciato essiccare (evaporazione del solvente) e/o polimerizzare (nel caso di prodotti bicomponenti con indurimento tramite catalizzatore) il prodotto. L’utilizzo dello spessimetro a umido è usuale soprattutto quando s’introducono prodotti vernicianti nuovi che l’applicatore non conosce. Normalmente gli applicatori, per prodotti vernicianti usuali, si fidano molto di più del proprio intuito che dello spessimetro a umido, anche perché per utilizzare questo strumento si deve continuamente interrompere la lavorazione.

Tuttavia, ciò che conta per rispettare i limiti previsti dalla norma in oggetto è lo spessore a secco. Non serve essere degli esperti per capire che, fra sovrapposizioni di strati di prodotti diversi, combinato con le geometrie complesse delle strutture da verniciare, il risultato dello spessore secco è molto variabile. Per supportare la nostra tesi abbiamo eseguito diverse prove di spessore su strutture diverse verniciate con una mano di primer su superficie sabbiata. Le prove di spessore sono state eseguite stendendo sulla struttura una griglia virtuale in cui i punti sui quali rilevare le misure erano equidistanti e coprivano l’intera superficie, comprendendo, nel caso ad esempio di una trave a doppia T (denominata anche ad H), sia le superfici verticali che orizzontali.

Questa griglia non è contemplata dalla norma SSPC PA 2, che prevede un rilevamento a campione. Ad esempio, per 10 mq di superficie trattata, tale norma richiede la rilevazione di 5 misure (dove ogni misura é calcolata sulla media di tre letture ravvicinate), misure che siano rappresentative dell’intera superficie campione. Nel nostro caso, invece, la griglia virtuale era necessaria per ottenere un campione statisticamente valido e omogeneo su tutte le superfici. I punti della griglia erano distanti 5 cm l’uno dall’altro, per cui il numero di misure eseguito era altissimo (in una piastra di 400x400 mm, ci sono 400 misure).

L’obiettivo del nostro criterio di misurazione rispetto a quello della norma è diverso: nel nostro caso abbiamo bisogno di conoscere in quale modo lo spessore di vernice si distribuisce sulla superficie e costruire così un diagramma (una curva gaussiana o a campana) che ci permetta di individuare delle regole o dei comportamenti ripetitivi a seconda della geometria delle superfici verniciate e degli spessori applicati.

under the standard is very low – not more than 5% – but it increases up to 11% as soon as the surface is more complex. Similarly, there are more measures above the standard – between 20 and 23% on the simple surfaces, more than 35% on the complex ones.

If we compared these data to those, for example, of welded structures, in which the orientation of the surfaces to be treated changes within a few centimetres (with closed boxes and cages, beams welded to pipes, etc.) and with different combinations among flat, vertical, round, and diagonal surfaces, the difference would increase exponentially.

Believe me, we always wonder how our applicators are able, in 95% of cases, to remain in a thickness range between 0.8 and 2.5 times the nominal thickness, perhaps after 3 coats and with a total thickness of 300 μm. It is evident, in fact, that no applicator “gives” the customer extra thicknesses of paint, since this would entail extra costs; however, to ensure compliance with the requirements set by the standard (80% of the nominal thickness) it is necessary to raise the average thickness by at least 20% of the nominal value. If the structure is complex, it is better to calculate a 40% increase or more.

Vi assicuro che ci chiediamo continuamente come i nostri verniciatori riescano, nel 95% dei casi, a rimanere in un range di spessore fra 0,8 e 2,5 volte lo spessore nominale, magari dopo 3 mani e uno spessore complessivo di 300 μm. È evidente, infatti, che nessun applicatore “regala” spessori di vernice in più al cliente, dal momento che quella maggiorazione comporta dei costi, ma per garantire l’80% dello spessore nominale come previsto dalla norma, è gioco forza alzare la media dello spessore di almeno il 20% rispetto al nominale. Se poi la configurazione delle strutture è complessa, è meglio posizionarsi sul 40% in più e oltre.

Mi aspetto nuovi contributi da parte di molti, soprattutto da parte di coloro che applicano: solo da un confronto costruttivo e aperto possono nascere soluzioni.

COATING AND CORROSION PROTECTION OF RAILWAY VEHICLES Verniciatura e protezione dalla corrosione dei veicoli ferroviari

T

he Rail Transport Committee of AICQ – Italian Association for Quality Culture – officially presented its “Guidelines for corrosion protection in the railway sector” on October, 18th 2012, filling a substantial regulatory and procedural void: in this sector, in fact, there were no guidelines or specialised standards regarding the necessary corrosion protection of tramway and metro rolling stock. This document defines the design, approval and control methods of the anticorrosion processes, with specific instructions also for the training, certification and qualification of the personnel in charge for the coordination and control of specific activities.

These Guidelines are the result of work done by a working group coordinated by Paolo Rami and formed by professionals from the railway sector OEMs (Alstom, Bombardier, Lucchini RS, Trenitalia), corrosion experts (Isva Mader, Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings, Qualital), and members of IIS – Italian Institute of Welding, AICQ, and R.I.NA.

o scorso 18 ottobre 2012 AICQ - Associazione Italiana Cultura e Qualità – Settore Trasporto su Rotaia ha presentato ufficialmente le “Linee Guida - Protezione dalla Corrosione nel Settore Ferroviario” che hanno colmato un vuoto normativo e procedurale molto grande: nel settore ferroviario non esistevano, infatti, linee guida o norme specializzate relative alla necessaria protezione anticorrosiva dei rotabili ferrotranviari e metropolitani. Il documento definisce le modalità di progettazione, omologazione e controllo dei processi anticorrosivi, con specifiche indicazioni anche per le attività di formazione, certificazione e qualifica del personale addetto al controllo e coordinamento delle attività specifiche.

Queste Linee Guida sono il frutto di un’intensa attività di un gruppo di lavoro coordinato da Paolo Rami e formato da alcuni OEM del settore ferroviario (Alstom, Bombardier, Lucchini RS, Trenitalia), da specialisti di cicli anticorrosivi (Isva Mader, Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings, Qualital), da esponenti dell’IIS – Istituto Italiano della Saldatura, di AIQC, del R.I.NA.

This regulatory void was due to the fact that the corrosion protection of railway vehicles has always been considered a marginal activity, despite the significant economic and safety consequences that its lack can cause.

Corrosion, in fact, can produce profound alterations in the structural characteristics of the railway vehicles and/or of their subsystems and metal components, significantly affecting their functionality and safety. The effective management of the corrosion protection process is therefore essential to ensure quality and continuity of service and to reduce direct and indirect costs of maintenance.

Following the issuance of these Guidelines, several seminars have been organised by AICQ and the Italian Institute of Welding to illustrate their content and explain the corrosion protection procedures described to the sector operators, from the appropriate pre-treatment, coating and finishing operations up to the necessary procedural and instrumental quality controls and personnel training.

Ipcm_Protective Coatings, as a high-level means of technical information in the field of corrosion and protective coatings, found it necessary to organise a conference to deepen the technological aspects of these Guidelines, picking the best technology available in the field to present it to customers, manufacturers of rail vehicles, designers, and quality control inspectors.

The conference is therefore aimed at presenting the technological solutions needed to fully implement the Guidelines, from the protective coating systems to the most suitable surface pre-treatment (mechanical or chemical) to ensure high corrosion resistance of the coating, from the equipment and application plants up to the instruments and methods of control, testing and management of the entire process.

In conjunction with the conference, the corporate sponsors giving technical reports will also offer advice to the participants in an exhibition area specially prepared outside the conference room: attendees will be able to receive advice on materials, paint systems, and quality controls, as well as see some application examples and discuss the latest technologies for corrosion protection.

The event, whose date and venue are currently being finalised, has been organised by EOS Mktg&Communication, publisher of ipcm_Protective Coatings, in collaboration with UCIF (Italian Surface Treatment Equipment Manufacturers Association) and the IIS-Italian Institute of Welding.

Questa lacuna normativa era motivata dal fatto che la protezione anticorrosiva dei veicoli ferroviari è sempre stata ritenuta un’attività marginale, nonostante le ricadute economiche, di affidabilità e sicurezza che la sua mancanza può causare siano ingenti.

La corrosione, infatti, può produrre nel tempo profonde alterazioni delle caratteristiche strutturali dei veicoli ferroviari e/o dei sottosistemi/componenti metallici tali da comprometterne la funzionalità e la sicurezza. Un’efficace gestione del processo di protezione dalla corrosione è pertanto essenziale per garantire qualità e continuità del servizio e per la riduzione degli oneri derivanti dai costi diretti e indiretti di interventi di manutenzione.

A seguito dell’emissione di queste Linee Guida, numerosi seminari sono stati organizzati da AICQ e Istituto Italiano della Saldatura per illustrarne i contenuti e spiegare agli attori del settore le procedure di protezione anticorrosiva in esse descritte, dall’appropriato pretrattamento delle superfici, passando per il rivestimento anticorrosivo e di finitura vero e proprio sino ai necessari controlli procedurali e strumentali di qualità e alla formazione del personale operativo e di controllo.

Ipcm_Protective Coatings, qualificandosi come mezzo di informazione di alto livello tecnico nel settore della corrosione e dei rivestimenti protettivi, ha ritenuto necessario organizzare un convegno per approfondire gli aspetti tecnologici delle Linee Guida, raccogliendo il meglio della tecnologia oggi disponibile nel campo della protezione dalla corrosione nel settore ferroviario per presentarlo alla committenza, ai produttori di veicoli ferrotranviari, ai progettisti, gli ispettori preposti al controllo qualità.

Questo convegno, quindi, si propone di presentare le soluzioni tecnologiche per attuare concretamente queste Linee Guida, dai cicli di protezione mediante verniciatura, al pretrattamento (meccanico o chimico) delle superfici più adatto per garantire un’elevata resistenza anticorrosiva della verniciatura, dalle apparecchiature e gli impianti di applicazione fino alla strumentazione e ai metodi di controllo, collaudo e gestione dell’intero processo.

In concomitanza con il convegno, le aziende sponsor che terranno le relazioni tecniche offriranno consulenza ai partecipanti in un’area espositiva appositamente allestita esternamente alla sala convegno: i presenti potranno ricevere consulenza su materiali, cicli di pitturazione, controlli qualitativi, visionare esempi di realizzazione e discutere le tecnologie più innovative di protezione anticorrosiva.

rega Srl – Pitture Italiane Anticorrosive (i.e. Italian anticorrosion coatings) was established on April in Vescovato (CR) by Nicola Bregalanti, the sole shareholder of this new company (Opening Photo). “This is a continuation of my thirty years of professional activity in the corrosion field,” Nicola Bregalanti, owner of Brega Srl, said. “I have put my experience, my passion and my technical know-how at the service of this company.”

The company’s product range is the result of experiences in collaboration with leading national and international brands and includes any type of anticorrosion product: epoxy polyurethane, acrylic, one-component, silicone… a series of about 40 high dry content products intended for corrosion protection, besides 70% dry content epoxy and 65% dry content polyurethane primers.

The company also produces polyurea, thanks to research conducted in the United States and to the expertise gained with a covered area of several thousand square metres available without the need for renovations or restorations.

La gamma di prodotti dell’azienda proviene dalle esperienze fatte in collaborazione con importanti marchi nazionali e internazionali, e copre tutta la varietà di prodotti anticorrosivi: epossidici poliuretanici, acrilici, monocomponenti, siliconici, una serie di circa 40 prodotti che costituiscono il pacchetto di tutti i prodotti ad alto contenuto di secco dedicati all’anticorrosione. Brega Srl – Pitture Italiane Anticorrosive manufactures a line of vinyl esters developed at the request of a customer, which has been used to coat all the cataphoresis immersion tanks of a major Italian car manufacturer (first coat of glass flake + top coat) with an exceptional performance. “We have a great expertise in the technology of vinyl esters, a very delicate product. Next year, we will be able to fully leverage this know-how and will start distributing it under our own brand,” Bregalanti stated. The company also produces a line of diluents compatible with all the largest manufacturers’ products and delivers its products with its own means of transport.

“I firmly believe in the strength of the Italian technology for the country’s development. Among the several advantages offered, an Italian product also gives more operational guarantees, because, as regards safety, anyone who uses a product of a foreign multinational company often has to refer to a foreign institute of health or to an outsourced call centre abroad,” Bregalanti said.

Brega Srl is between the fourth and the sixth position among the Italian manufacturers of anticorrosion products, with 600 tons per year. The company has also modified some formulations to increase the dry content and the drying times, getting orders all over the world, including one for a 75,000 meters surface in Brescia, Italy. “This year we have successfully supplied our products to all Italian oil companies,” Bregalanti added.

ZETAGÌ: THE FIRE DID NOT AFFECT THE BUSINESS Zetagì: l’incendio non ha compromesso l’attività

n June, the 4th, at the paint factory Colorificio Zetagì, producing paints and varnishes for the wood and iron industries since the 1960s, a fire broke out causing the temporary unavailability of a part of the plant.

This has not had any serious consequences, there have been no injuries and the Italian company, based in Creazzo (VI, Italy), has immediately resumed work from June, the 10th.

The fire broke out due to the accidental overturning of a tank containing a plastic resin dissolved in a solvent solution and resulted in the unavailability of an area of about 1,500 square metres out of a total of 18,000 m2 (9,000 of which are covered).

The CEO of Zetagì, Andrea Rosa, stated: “First of all, it should be clear that there has been no interruption in the activity of the company, except of course for the area directly affected by the incident, which has involved only about 20% of the company’s production capacity”, Rosa explained.

“I would like to thank especially our 65 employees, who have shown great sense of responsibility and loyalty, immediately being available to tackle longer shifts to ensure compliance of orders”, Rosa added.

In 2011, Zetagì took over the Veneziani Protective Coatings branch of the company Veneziani S.p.A., starting a process of growth which led to a turnover of 17 million euros in 2012, with a further 10% increase in the first five months of 2013, mainly due to higher sales abroad.

L

o scorso 4 giugno, presso il colorificio Zetagì, che produce dagli anni ’60 vernici e smalti per l’industria del legno e del ferro, é scoppiato un incendio che ha provocato la temporanea inagibilità di una parte dello stabilimento. L’episodio non ha avuto conseguenze gravi, non ci sono stati feriti e l’azienda di Creazzo (VI) ha ripreso immediatamente, già dal 10 giugno, a essere operativa al 100%.

L’incendio si è sviluppato per il rovesciamento accidentale di una tanica contenente una resina plastica disciolta in una soluzione solvente e ha comportato l’inagibilità di un’area di circa 1.500 mq dello stabilimento, su 18.000 m2 complessivi (di cui 9.000 di superficie coperta). L’amministratore delegato di Zetagì, Andrea Rosa, ha dichiarato: “Va chiarito innanzitutto che non c’è stata nessuna interruzione dell’attività dell’azienda, salvo © Zetagì ovviamente per la parte interessata direttamente dall’incidente, che ha riguardato soltanto il 20% circa della capacità produttiva dell’azienda”, ha spiegato Rosa.

“Di questo vanno ringraziati soprattutto i 65 collaboratori dell’azienda che hanno dimostrato grande senso di responsabilità e attaccamento, dando fin da subito la loro disponibilità ad affrontare turni di lavoro più gravosi, per garantire il rispetto degli ordinativi”, ha precisato Rosa.

Nel 2011, Zetagì ha rilevato il ramo d’azienda Veneziani Protective Coatings da Veneziani S.p.A., avviando un processo di crescita che l’ha portata a toccare i 17 milioni di euro di fatturato nel 2012, in ulteriore crescita del 10% nei primi cinque mesi del 2013, grazie soprattutto all’incremento delle vendite all’estero.

Its coating systems have been formulated according to the UNI EN ISO 12944 guidelines and are suitable for all application environments, from industrial carpentry in rural areas up to oil facilities in aggressive environments. The main Polistuc products intended for iron are as follows: • High solid epoxy products (base coats, zinc base coats, intermediate coatings, enamels) • 100% V/V epoxy products (solvent-free) • Surface tolerant epoxy products • Two-component, one coat acrylic products, directly applied on a hot-dip galvanised surface (duplex system) • 100% V/V polyurethane products for tanks (solvent-free), certified NACE SP 0188, ASTM D 5162 and UNI EN 12285-1 • Quick drying conventional products (rust preventers and enamels) • One and two-component waterborne acrylic products.

The certifications obtained by Polistuc in April as a result of the tests performed by the Giordano Institute in compliance with the standard UNI EN ISO 12944 in C3, C4, C5M, and C5I environments are of great interest for the anticorrosion field.

The company decided to obtain these certifications in order to provide practical responses to the needs of the sector and of the companies for which the Polistuc products are intended, e.g. application companies operating on industrial and civil infrastructure; design companies; carpenter’s shops to which major customers (FFSS, ENI, ENEL) outsource the protection and maintenance of plants and facilities that meet the standard UNI EN ISO 12944.

By comparison, UltraFlex™ easily conforms to intricate shapes, small internal diameters and reaches the remote locations that other hardfacing technologies cannot.

The UltraFlex™ surface treatment can be applied in a range of thicknesses, from approximately 0.254mm to 2.03mm (0.010” - 0.080”). Depending on the application, the smooth UltraFlex surface can be used “as applied” or machined to the desired finish.

Severe Service Valves

Modern valves control flow of all types, including: Thin gasses, highly corrosive chemicals, superheated steam, abrasive slurries, toxic gases and radioactive materials. Valves can handle temperatures from subfreezing to molten metal, and pressures from high vacuum to thousands of pounds per square centimeter.

The severe service metal-seated ball valves used in harsh services are made of exotic metal alloys, and require coatings to protect the surfaces against a combination of corrosion and wear. Thermal spray and Stellite™ weld overlay coatings are widely used to protect balls and seats. But as customers require improved performance for longer component life, new material solutions are needed. Kennametal has developed surface treatment technologies that metallurgically fuse advanced metal compositions onto balls and seats, resulting in exceptional wear and corrosion resistance in environments where chemicals are transported, often in combination of very high temperatures, or containing erosive particulates.

UltraFlex™ technology enables Kennametal to select the most suitable coating material that will resist specific conditions, and offer customers engineered materials beyond standard coatings. Velan, a leading valve manufacturer, has recently embraced UltraFlex™ technology, applying it on the severe service metalseated ball valves, solving customer problems in the petrochemical industry.

he mobile bridge of Ravenna (Opening Photo) is a work combining usefulness and beauty. It is a structure of great architectural value, but also an essential arterial road to the port of the city.

Conceived by the Municipality and by the Port Authority of Ravenna for the crossing of the Candiano canal, in the Ravenna harbour, it provides, at the same time, a direct link between the two shores. Therefore, it allows both the quick and safe crossing of vehicles and, once opened, the navigation of boats along the canal.

Built by C.M.C and F.lli BARUZZI based on the executive project of S.G.A.I S.r.l., the mobile bridge of Ravenna, which is among the largest ones in Europe, is composed of two main calendered, box-sectioned beams with a total span of 73.35 m. It is divided into two equal

For balancing the bridge, there is a stabilising mass with a total weight of 3,000 kN for each side, located at the end of the two shore arms of the main beams.

The bridge movement is made possible by 8 hydraulic rams (four on each side) able to lift the structure in any wind condition, with an opening angle of the bridge of 72° that allows the transit of ships with a span of over 50 metres (Fig. 3).

The supporting beams of the deck – consisting of a sheet floor that is stiffened longitudinally by trapezoidal section beams and obliquely by inverted T-section beams – are fixed to two variable section box girders placed transversely to the canal.

La struttura di ognuna delle ante del ponte è composta da due travi a cassone a sezione variabile, poste traversalmente al canale, alle quali sono fissati i traversi di appoggio dell’impalcato, costituito da un piano di lamiera irrigidito longitudinalmente da travi a sezione trapezia e traversalmente da travi a sezione “T” rovescia.

Mo.S.E. is a unique and innovative project as well as one of the largest construction sites in Europe. It is expected to be completed within a few years. The system is made up of mobile barriers located at each of the three harbour entrances giving access to the lagoon (Lido Treporti, Malamocco e Chioggia) and will operate with tides greater than or equal to 110 cm, up to the maximum height of 300 cm. However, the minimum value of 110 cm is not fix and may vary as a function of the different environmental, hydraulic and harbour requirements.

Structural elements The salient features of this unique project are the mobile barriers separating the water of the Adriatic Sea from the lagoon water during the acqua alta episodes; they are constituted by a modular series of buoyant force sluices, juxtaposed to one another, hinged on the bottom – to concrete caissons – and mutually independent.

The barriers are defined as “mobile” because, in normal sea conditions, they are full of water and lie in the housing structures built on the bottom (concrete caissons). However, when tides exceeding the safeguard level are forecast (as assessed by the tide gauge of the Punta della Salute area), the sluices are drained of water by means of compressed air. Elementi strutturali del progetto Gli elementi caratterizzanti questo progetto unico al mondo sono le barriere mobili per la separazione delle acque del Mar Adriatico dalle acque lagunari durante gli episodi di acqua alta: esse sono costituite da una serie modulare di paratoie a spinta di galleggiamento, accostate l’una all’altra, incernierate sul fondo – a cassoni in cemento armato – e tra loro indipendenti.

Le barriere si definiscono “mobili” poiché in condizioni normali di mare esse sono piene d’acqua e restano adagiate sulle strutture di alloggiamento realizzate sul fondo (cassoni in cemento armato). Quando, invece, è prevista una marea superiore alla quota di salvaguardia (valutata dal mareografo Punta della Salute) le paratoie vengono svuotate dall’acqua mediante immissione di aria compressa. In questo modo esse si sollevano, ruotando attorno all’asse delle cerniere, fino ad emergere dal livello del mare.

raised and rotated around the axis of the hinges, finally emerging from the sea.

The basic parts of the mobile barriers are essentially four: The sluices (see opening photo) and the components of the hinges, i.e. the male element, the female element and the coupling unit.

The sluices are made up of perimetric sheets and an inner framework (similar to a ballast tank) provided at the ends with two pivots connected to two male elements. The height of the sluices is variable depending on the depth of the harbour entrance (maximum height: 29 m). If we liken the shape of the sluices to a parallelepiped, its dimensions are indicatively 20x18x4 m; they weigh 220 tons each (Fig. 1).

Each pivot is connected to a male element, which is wedged in the female element (fixed and anchored to the concrete caisson on the bottom) through the coupling unit located inside the caisson itself.

The sluices, the male and female elements and the coupling unit are mainly in carbon steel alloys; only small parts are made in precious alloys (mating surfaces and organs in motion relative to one another).

The inspections of the structures related to the female and male elements, as well as to the coupling unit were held in two separate locations: At the premises of the applicator in charge and on site. The on-site inspections were carried out in the basin created at the Lido Treporti harbour entrance, the one in which the most progress has been made.

In addition to collaborating with the hinge manufacturer, MATED Srl earned the trust of the general contractor and of the project director of Mo.S.E., and became the delegate of the latter for the inspection of the protective coatings applied on the first four sluices.

These inspections were carried out in two different locations: At the plant of the manufacturer, where the first two layers of the anticorrosion coating system have been applied, and in Porto Marghera, where the antifouling layers have been added.

The first four sluices are being launched at the time of publication of this issue of ipcm_Protective Coatings, and the commitment of MATED in the Mo.S.E. project is constant even in the pre-immersion stages, for the verification of the coating integrity or of any retouching operation needed.

For the completion of the project, 74 more sluices and the relative hinges will have to be built.

Tali ispezioni si sono divise in due diverse sedi: presso lo stabilimento della ditta costruttrice dove sono state applicati i primi due strati del ciclo di rivestimento anticorrosivo e a Porto Marghera, ove sono stati applicati gli strati finali di pittura antivegetativa.

Proprio durante la pubblicazione di questo numero di ipcm_ Protective Coatings, sono in corso le operazioni di varo delle prime quattro paratoie e l’impegno di MATED nel progetto Mo.S.E. è costante anche nelle fasi di pre-immersione per la verifica della totale integrità del rivestimento o delle operazioni di ritocco, ove necessarie.

Per il completamento dell’opera devono essere realizzate altre 74 paratoie e le relative cerniere.

ork commenced in spring 2011 on the StockvikSkönsberg stretch of the E4 European Route project in Sweden that includes the construction of 33 different bridges. A specific Hempel sales and R+D team in Germany and Sweden came together under German leadership to design and implement the supply of 170,000 litres of coating materials for the new Sundsvall Bridge, Sweden, the 2,109 metre flyover spanning the Sundsvall Fjörd at a height of 33 metres due to open to traffic in autumn 2015 (Fig. 1).

Pihl & Son, Max Bögl, Josef Möbius AG). Per Max Bögl GmbH & Co. KG, il più grande fabbricante privato di acciaio della Germania, si tratta del più importante progetto di costruzione di un ponte a cui abbia mai partecipato. Fra gli altri progetti di riferimento nel settore, la società si è occupata della costruzione del ponte di Strelasund, a Stralsund, anch‘esso sul mar Baltico e sempre in collaborazione con Hempel.

Per le strutture esposte, è stato utilizzato un sistema a 3 mani applicato in officina, basato su HEMPADUR PRO ZINC 1738G, un primer ad alto contenuto di zinco, seguito da una mano di HEMPADUR MASTIC 4588F epossidico bicomponente con ossido di ferro e infine HEMPATHANE 55610, una finitura poliuretanica ad alto contenuto di solidi, in colore grigio polvere RAL 7037. Questo sistema è certificato NORSOK M-501, offre una catalisi rapida, elevate prestazioni e una protezione permanente dell‘acciaio esposto alle intemperie. air, severe weather variability and sub-zero temperatures in winter (Fig. 2). The Swedish authorities awarded the order to the joint venture “Sundsvallbroen PBM” (PBM = Arge partner: E. Pihl & Son, Max Bögl, Josef Möbius AG).

For Max Bögl GmbH & Co. KG, Germany’s largest private steel construction firm, this represents the company’s biggest bridge construction project to date. Amongst other references for the project is Strelasund Bridge, Stralsund, which is also in the Baltic Sea and painted with Hempel.

For exposed bridge structures, the system being used is a shop-applied 3-coat system based on a zinc-rich primer of HEMPADUR PRO ZINC 1738G, followed by a two-component mineral iron oxide coat of HEMPADUR MASTIC 4588F, and finally a high-solid PUR-Topcoat of HEMPATHANE 55610 tinted to RAL 7037 dust grey.

This system is NORSOK M-501 certified and provides fast-curing, high-performance, permanent protection for harsh weather-exposed steel. In accordance with Norsok standards Hempel has a proven track record for protecting off-shore wind turbines and oil & gas platforms erected in similarly aggressive environments all over the

world, as well as an important differentiating factor, in that the Hempel system calls for just one intermediate coat and therefore represents faster turnover in the production shop.

For inside, unexposed bridge parts, a single layer of HEMPEL’S 457DE two-component, polyurethane coating with zinc phosphate is used. A second NORSOK certified system, comprising an aluminium pigmented primer and intermediate coat of HEMPADUR MASTIC 4588W, covered by a topcoat of RAL 7037 tinted HEMPATHANE 55610, is being supplied on site in Poland and Sweden for pre-assembly and assembly parts and repairs. This two-component, polyurethane topcoat provides good gloss and colour retention to ensure that the bridge continues to display the full merits of this feat of international engineering for many years to come (Rif. Questo topcoat poliuretanico bi-componente offre una buona ritenzione della brillantezza e del colore, assicurando l‘integrità di questa grande impresa di ingegneria internazionale per molti anni a venire (rif. foto d’apertura).

Early September is an ideal time to be in Estoril, known by locals as “the garden by the sea”, which became world-famous in the 1930s and 40s as the chosen place of exile for European royalty, businessmen, intellectuals, politicians and artists. Nearby are the charming fishing villages of Sintra and Cascais offering easy and delightful excursions for accompanying persons.

A total of 808 abstracts from 65 countries have been received and will be filtered into 26 sessions including 6 workshops and ISO meetings which will cover all aspects of corrosion forms and corrosion protection. Working Party business meetings will also be taking place as will poster presentations. A Graduate Course on Corrosion Science will be held in Lisbon at the Instituto Superior Tecnico for three fill days (30 August – 1 September) prior to EUROCORR’s commencement.

T

he Italian State Highway 640, which is about 72 km long, is a direct connection between the provincial capitals of Agrigento and Caltanissetta as well as a strategic backbone of the regional road network. Crossing a very sensitive area in terms of environment and landscape, the new SH 640 has required particular attention in the design of the viaducts, so as to ensure the best conditions for an environmental integration. The Serra Cazzola Viaduct (Opening Photo) is the main one built on this route, both for the environmental importance of the valley crossed and for the overall length of the viaduct (980 m) and its maximum height from the valley floor (about 70 m) (Fig. 1).

long deck (Fig. 2) with a composite section of steel- concrete and consists of two metal double T-beams with a variable height (from 2.90 to 5.50 m), arranged in a distance of 12.50 meters and linked to load-bearing construction beams placed at the extrados of the main beams, with protruding sides supporting the reinforced concrete base (Fig. 3). The viaduct consists of 12 spans of 55, 70 and 90 m; the central one is 120 m long.

After completion of the 11 pillars in the valley and of a few temporary ones, the metal deck has been assembled in segments (voussoirs) in designated areas behind the abutments (Fig. 4) and has been pushed towards the centre of the valley by a sophisticated synchronous lifting and pushing system. The final operations ended on April 24. The Serra Cazzola Viaduct is therefore an important milestone in the building of the first lot of the new State Highway 640 and, for the region of Sicily, is a European level infrastructure.

Una volta ultimate le 11 pile nella valle ed alcune pile provvisorie, l’impalcato metallico viene assemblato a segmenti (conci) nelle apposite zone dietro le spalle (fig. 4) e viene spinto verso il centro della valle da un sofisticato sistema di sollevamento e spinta sincronizzata. Le ultime operazioni di spinta sincronizzata si sono concluse lo scorso 24 aprile. Il Viadotto Serra Cazzola rappresenta quindi un traguardo importante nei lavori del primo lotto della nuova strada statale 640 e costituisce, per la regione Sicilia, un’opera infrastrutturale a livello europeo.

luoropolymers are known for their high thermal, chemical and weathering resistance, for the excellent surface properties (in particular, oil and water repellency) and for the optical properties (low refractive index).

Fluoropolymers are also essential materials in a wide variety of industries. They were placed on the market in the 1930s and are applied as coating materials providing various substrates with the above mentioned properties.

In 1982, Asahi Glass developed a fluoro-olefin vinyl ether (FEVE) copolymer under the trade name “LUMIFLON®”. Since 2005, in Japan, by decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure, all bridges must be protected with FEVE paints. One of the best known examples is the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (Fig. 1 and 2), the longest suspension bridge in the world. It is 282.8 meters high and 3,911 meters long. Its central span is 1,991 metres long.

Unprotected steel exposed to air, immersed in water or buried is subject to corrosion, which may cause damage. There are several ways to protect steel structures from corrosion. The standard UNI EN ISO 12944 deals with the protection by paint systems and lists all the important factors needed to obtain adequate protection against corrosion.

For the purposed of UNI EN ISO 12944-2, the atmospheric environments have been classified into six corrosivity categories (Table 1).

Since the duration of the protective effectiveness of the coating is generally shorter than the service life of the structure, during the planning and design stage adequate attention should be given to the maintenance and coating restoration operations.

The level of degradation of the coating before the first important maintenance intervention should be agreed between the parties involved and must be determined in compliance with parts 1 to 5 of the standard UNI EN ISO 4628, unless otherwise agreed between the parties.

The standard UNI EN ISO 12944-1 sets three durability classes: - low (L), from 2 to 5 years; - medium (M), from 5 to 15 years; - high (H), more than 15 years; Durability is not a “duration guarantee”. Durability is a technical parameter that can help the client draft a maintenance program.

Part 6 of the standard UNI EN ISO 12944 defines the methods and the laboratory testing conditions for the assessment of the coatings intended for the protection of steel structures against corrosion.

The results of these tests (neutral salt spray, condensation in water, chemical resistance and immersion in water) should be considered as an aid in the choice of a suitable coating and not as precise information allowing to determine the durability.

Through the studies and experiments of its LABORIS Dept., Ti.Pi.Ci has developed a complete range of waterborne anti-corrosion coatings, registering its trademarks and qualifying its paint systems according to UNI EN ISO 12944.

One of the most interesting ones is the TIPICI-MT-0065 system, intended for the categories C5M (marine) and C5I (industrial) with durability H (high) (Table 2).

HYDROGUARD® Zinc is a waterborne zinc epoxy primer complying with the standard SSPC Paint 20 level 1.

It is supplied with the ASTM D520 Type 2 zinc dust.

The percentage of metallic zinc on the dry film is 88% (in weight).

HYDROGUARD® HB is a waterborne, high solid epoxy intermediate coating applicable up to a dry thickness of 200 micron per layer.

Finally, HYDROTHANE® FL is a waterborne fluorinated polyurethane finish formulated with FEVE resins, which give it high stability to light and to chemical attack.

The TIPICI-MT-0056 coating system is therefore very close – in terms of both type of products used and dry thicknesses – to the Coating System no. 1 mentioned by the standard NORSOK M-501.

It has passed all the tests required by the standard UNI EN ISO 12944 for the corrosivity categories C5M (marine) and C5I (industrial) with high durability (Table 3 and Fig. 6A-6F).

HYDROGUARD® Zinc è un primer zincante epossidico all’acqua, in accordo con la regolamentazione SSPC Paint 20 level 1. È fornito con polvere di zinco ASTM D520 Type 2 e la percentuale di zinco metallico sul film secco è pari al 88% (in peso).

HYDROGUARD® HB è un intermedio epossidico all’acqua ad alto residuo solido, applicabile fino a uno spessore secco per strato di 200 micron.

Infine, HYDROTHANE® FL è una finitura poliuretanica fluorurata all’acqua, formulata con resine di tipo FEVE che le conferiscono altissima stabilità alla luce e all’attacco chimico.

Il sistema di verniciatura TIPICI-MT-0056 è quindi molto vicino, sia in termini di tipologia di prodotti impiegati, sia in termini di spessori secchi finali, al Coating System no.1 menzionato dallo standard NORSOK M-501.

Il suddetto sistema di verniciatura ha ampiamente superato tutti i test richiesti dalla norma UNI EN ISO 12944, per le classi di corrosività C5M (marina) e C5I (industriale) con durabilità alta (tabella 3 e figg. 6A-6F).

The main advantages of using the TIPICI-MT-0056 paint system are basically two. The first one is the fact that it has successfully passed a complete set of qualifying tests at the international level. A few years ago, in the USA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed regulations exempting the fluorinated coatings from compliance with the emission limits. In Europe, the evolution of the legislation is aimed at reducing the VOC level to 250-350 g/litre, which is only possible through the use of water-based paint products (Table 4).

In USA, negli anni scorsi l’Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aveva elaborato norme che esentavano i rivestimenti fluorurati dal rispetto dei limiti di emissione. In Europa, l’evoluzione della normativa è orientata a ridurre il VOC a livello di 250-350 g/litro, possibile solo ed esclusivamente attraverso l’utilizzo di prodotti vernicianti a base acqua (tabella 4).

In general, the corrosion protection field can be divided into industrial (agricultural machinery, cranes, presses, and so on) and protective sector (valves, actuators, chemical and petroleum plants, bridges, etc). The main difference between these two sectors lies in the “conditions of use” of the coated structures: The protective field is characterised by the highest levels of corrosion and aggressive environment, conditions that occur in the industrial sector only in a sporadic and limited way. This implies that the protective coatings used in the two sectors differ considerably in terms of formulation and basic chemistry, so as to provide different performance – clearly superior and technologically complex in the protective field, more standardised in the industrial one.

In the industrial sector, the use of waterborne coatings is now fairly widespread. It should be said, however, that the performance requirements are sometimes limited, while the “cost” parameter plays a fundamental role.

That is why those products called “iron soilers” by the experts are much too common in this sector.

In linea generale i settori della protezione anticorrosiva possono essere divisi in industria (macchine agricole, gru, presse, e così via) e protective (valvole, attuatori, impianti chimici e petroliferi, ponti etc). La principale differenza tra i due settori sta nelle “condizioni di utilizzo e di vita” dei manufatti verniciati: nel settore protective siamo in presenza dei massimi livelli di corrosione e aggressività ambientale, condizioni che nel settore industriale non si presentano se non in maniera sporadica e limitata. Ciò implica che i rivestimenti protettivi utilizzati nei due diversi settori si differenzino notevolmente dal punto di vista formulativo e della chimica di base, per garantire performance diverse, nettamente superiori e tecnologicamente complesse nel settore protective, più standardizzate nel settore industriale.

Nel settore industria l’impiego dei prodotti vernicianti all’acqua è ormai abbastanza diffuso, ma va detto che i requisiti prestazionali talvolta sono limitati, mentre la componente “costo” gioca un ruolo fondamentale. Per questo motivo nel settore industriale sono purtroppo molto diffusi quei prodotti che gli anticorrosionisti chiamano gli “sporcaferro”.

The protective sector, on the other hand, is “dominated” by coating specifications (often outdated and not taking account of the product innovations) requiring solvent-based products with an international brand.

Recently, some well-known international engineering companies have started to become interested in the waterborne protective systems, a sign that times are changing in the protective sector, too.

The waterborne systems by Ti.Pi.Ci. are used especially where the specifications leave freedom of choice between solvent and water-based products. Ti.Pi.Ci. was the first Italian company in the corrosion field that formulated – about 15 years ago – waterbased silicone paints for high temperatures, which are currently used on valves that work at up to 400°C. Similarly, waterborne epoxy systems and/or with a waterborne polyurethane finish (also metallic, in a customised colour) are used for the ranges of actuators that are not subject to the international coating specifications.

Ultimately, in the protective sector, the waterborne products are less common than in the industrial sector, but the ones present are the result of high-quality technologies able to meet the stringent requirements of the heavy industry in terms of corrosion protection.

Diverso è invece il discorso nel settore protective, governato da specifiche di verniciatura (troppo spesso obsolete e che non tengono conto delle innovazioni di prodotto) che impongono prodotti a solvente a marchio internazionale.

Recentemente, note società internazionali d’ingegneria hanno iniziato a interessarsi ai cicli protettivi all’acqua, segno che i tempi stanno cambiando anche nel settore protective.

Ti.Pi.Ci. s’inserisce con i propri cicli all’acqua soprattutto laddove le specifiche lasciano libertà di scelta fra prodotto a solvente o all’acqua. È stata la prima azienda italiana del settore anticorrosione a formulare – circa 15 anni fa – pitture siliconiche all’acqua per alte temperature, che attualmente sono impiegate su valvole che lavorano fino a 400°C. Analogamente, cicli epossidici all’acqua e/o con finitura poliuretanica all’acqua (anche metallizzata, in tinta personalizzata) sono utilizzati per le linee di attuattori che non devono sottostare alle specifiche internazionali di verniciatura.

In definitiva, nel settore protective, i prodotti all’acqua sono meno diffusi rispetto al settore industriale, ma laddove trovano spazio sono il frutto di tecnologie di elevata qualità in grado di soddisfare i requisiti stringenti in tema di anticorrosione del settore dell’industria pesante.

W

hat do intumescent coatings mean for the fire protection of steel? Intumescent coatings are the ideal way to combine an attractive architectural appearance with fire safety.

Although steel does not burn, it loses its strength when exposed to temperatures above 500°C (Fig. 1).

As a result, steel structures become unstable due to the effects of fire, and buildings can collapse. Intumescent coatings form a highly efficient foam based on micro porous carbon. It forms spontaneously, homogeneously, and rapidly at temperatures > 200°C (Fig. 2).

If there are no space restrictions, the foam may be up to 100 times thicker than the original coating and has a strong heat insulation effect. Therefore, intumescent coatings are often used to protect steel structures such as airport terminal buildings, shopping centers, theaters and office buildings. Typical applications of intumescent coating systems are on loadbearing steel columns and beams (Ref. Opening Picture). The fire protection system prevents the steel structure from collapsing, gives the firefighters enough time to assist people to escape, and extinguish the fire before the collapse of the whole building.

This means more time for evacuation, and more lives saved.

i cosa si tratta quando si parla di vernici intumescenti per la protezione dell’acciaio dal fuoco? Le vernici intumescenti sono la soluzione ideale per combinare un aspetto architettonico accattivante con la protezione dal fuoco. Sebbene l’acciaio non bruci, esso perde la sua forza quando é esposto a temperature superiori a 500°C (fig. 1). Di conseguenza, le strutture di acciaio diventano instabili a causa degli effetti del fuoco e gli edifici possono crollare. I rivestimenti intumescenti formano una schiuma molto efficace basata sul carbonio microporoso (fig. 2). Si forma spontaneamente, in modo omogeneo e rapidamente a temperature superiori a 200°C. Se non ci sono restrizioni di spazio, la schiuma può essere fino a 100 volte più spessa rispetto al rivestimento originale e ha un forte effetto d’isolamento termico. Pertanto, le vernici intumescenti sono spesso utilizzate per proteggere le strutture in acciaio, per esempio dei terminal aeroportuali, centri commerciali, cinema e uffici (rif. foto d’apertura).

Le applicazioni tipiche dei sistemi di rivestimento intumescenti sono su colonne e travi di acciaio portanti. Il sistema di protezione dal fuoco impedisce che la struttura in acciaio collassi, dà al personale antincendio tempo a sufficienza per assistere le persone durante l’evacuazione ed estinguere il fuoco prima che collassi l’intero edificio. Ciò significa avere più tempo per l’evacuazione e per trarre in salvo le persone.

As the temperatures continue to rise in an ongoing fire, the foam layer gradually chars and it would collapse if the ester compounds did not release glass like, viscous polyphosphates.

They support the carbon foam and prevent it from collapsing.

With more energy being fed into the process during a fire, the carbon eventually also burns. All that is left is a titanium phosphate carcass with a very low heat transfer coefficient, which ensures the flame protection that is necessary at this stage (Fig. 3).

Additional components of an intumescent fire protection system are a primer and possibly a topcoat to protect the coating against environmental effects like moisture, or used for decorative purposes.

The details for individual building parts are specified in technical standards which are compiled and published by national or international standardization bodies like the British Standards Institution (BSI), the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the International Standardization Organization (ISO). Components such as structural steelwork are classified according to their behavior in a fire. The period of time for which they are able to perform their intended function in a fire test is measured. The fire endurance determined in this test is expressed in minutes and is divided into classes.

resistance ratings for only far less than 30 minutes because they heat up rapidly. Since different steel components have different fire endurance characteristics, the definition of the type of steel used is essential for fire resistance classification. Steel components being assessed for their fire behavior are defined by the profile factor which describes the ratio of flame- exposed circumference (Hp) to the heated cross sectional area (A) of the unclad steel component.

On the one hand, steel profiles with a profile factor Hp/A ˜ = 300 m-l (large circumference, small cross-sectional area) have a low fire endurance and therefore need a high level of fire protection to meet the official requirements. On the other hand, steel profiles with a profile factor Hp/A ˜ = 160 m-l (small circumference, large cross-sectional area) have higher fire endurance and so require less fire protection (Fig. 4).

Fire protection flame retardant systems based on Exolit meet fire resistance classes of F 30, F 45, F 60, F 90 and in some cases even F 120, F 180 and beyond. This has been confirmed by fire tests conducted according to international standards:

Dall’altro lato, i profili di acciaio con un fattore profilo Hp/A ~ = 160 m-l (piccola circonferenza, grande sezione trasversale) hanno una maggiore resistenza al fuoco e quindi richiedono una protezione minore (fig. 4).

I sistemi di protezione ritardanti del fuoco basati su Exolit raggiungono le classi di resistenza al fuoco F 30, F 45, F 60, F 90 e in alcuni casi anche F 120, F 180 e oltre. Questo è stato confermato dai test condotti secondo gli standard internazionali.

Intumescent effect is also used in applications other than steel protection. Similar formulations are used to fire protect sealants, adhesives, cables, wood and electronic equipment. The European Union commissioned research project ENFIRO (www.enfiro. eu) has acknowledged the environmental and health benefits of pioneering Exolit® non-halogenated flame retardants from Clariant. The technology by Clariant, which sets new standards in non-halogenated flame retardants offering exceptional ecological, toxicological and performance properties, was featured in the research project into substitution options for brominated flame retardants (BFRs). The results prove the feasibility for manufacturers to produce sophisticated components that must meet high safety and fire protection requirements without halogenated flame retardants.

EUROCORR 2013 – EUROPEAN CORROSION CONGRESS

UROCORR is the most important European event on the subjects of corrosion and protection.

This September’s EUROCORR hosted by our Portuguese member society SPM, the Portuguese Society for Materials, is dedicated to sustainability “for a blue sky” and will take place in the lovely seaside resort of Estoril at the centrallylocated Estoril congress center, easy walking distance from most hotels and only 25 km from downtown Lisbon by train. Early September is an ideal time to be in Estoril, known by locals as “the garden by the sea”, which became world-famous in the 1930s and 40s as the chosen place of exile for European royalty, businessmen, intellectuals, politicians and artists.

Nearby are the charming villages of Sintra and Cascais offering easy and delightful excursions for accompanying persons.

A total of 808 abstracts from 65 countries have been received and will be filtered into 26 sessions including 6 workshops and ISO meetings which will cover all aspects of corrosion forms and corrosion protection. Working Party business meetings will also be taking place as will poster presentations. A Graduate Course on Corrosion Science will be held in Lisbon at the Instituto Superior Tecnico for three full days (30 August – 1 September) prior to EUROCORR’s commencement.

L’EUROCORR del prossimo settembre sarà ospitata dalla nostra società membra portoghese SPM, Portuguese Society for Materials (Società Portoghese per I Materiali), sarà dedicata alla sostenibilità per un “cielo più blu” e si terrà nella affascinante cornice del resort sul mare di Estoril presso il Centro Congresso Estoril, raggiungibile comodamente a piedi dalla maggior parte degli hotel e a soli 25 km dal centro di Lisbona con il treno. L’inizio di settembre è il periodo ideale per visitare Estoril, conosciuta localmente come “il giardino sul mare”, e divenuta famosa in tutto il mondo negli anni ‘30 e ‘40 come la località scelta per l’esilio della nobiltà Europea, di uomini d’affari, intellettuali, politici e artisti. Nelle vicinanze ci sono gli affascinanti villaggi di Sintra e Cascais che offrono escursioni semplici e deliziose per le persone che accompagnano i delegati.

fter the great success of the last 2012 edition, EXPO Ferroviaria is preparing many new features for the next one, which will be held from 1st to 3rd April 2014 at Lingotto Fiere in Turin (Italy). EXPO Ferroviaria is the only Italian exhibition dedicated to technologies and services of the railway sector. The next year exhibition will be the sixth in a series of events of great success, which attracts executives, engineers and buyers of the railways and public transport companies from Italy and all over the world.

For the next edition, an agreement has been achieved with Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (the Italian state railways company) thanks to which, for the first time, two rails will be available in the Lingotto station for the showcase of rolling stock material.

The two tracks will be available for the installation of rolling stock material from March 31, the day before the opening of EXPO Ferroviaria 2014. The Lingotto station is near Lingotto Fiere: Visitors can take advantage of a free shuttle service that will allow them to move between the two sites in 5 minutes.

At the end of last May, about 200 companies from 14 countries had already booked their stand for the edition of 2014.

There will be industry leaders such as Alstom Ferroviaria, Ansaldobreda, Bombardier Transportation and Siemens.

To these have to be added the Vossloh Group companies in France, Germany and Spain, working in the field of rolling stock and rail products.

The Polish manufacturer PESA Bydgoszcz will also be present with a booth.

Among the participants in the field of signaling and communications, Ansaldo STS Italy and Thales will be present. EXPO Ferroviaria 2014 drew also the attention of the leading manufacturers of subsystems and components for rolling stock materials, such as Dako-CZ, Hübner Italy, Knorr-Bremse and ZF Friedrichshafen/ZF Italy, as well as of manufacturers of systems for the maintenance of the wagons, as Bertolotti and Vogelsang Maschinenbau.

Per la prossima edizione, é stata raggiunta un’intesa con Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane grazie alla quale saranno messi a disposizione, per la prima volta, due binari nella stazione Lingotto per l’esposizione di materiale rotabile. I due binari saranno disponibili per l’installazione di materiale rotabile dal 31 marzo, giorno precedente all’inaugurazione di EXPO Ferroviaria 2014. La stazione Lingotto si trova a breve distanza dal Lingotto Fiere: i visitatori potranno usufruire di un servizio navetta gratuito che permetterà loro di spostarsi tra i due siti in 5 minuti.

Alla fine dello scorso maggio, circa 200 aziende provenienti da 14 Paesi avevano già prenotato il loro stand per l’edizione del 2014. Saranno presenti aziende leader del settore come Alstom Ferroviaria, Ansaldobreda, Bombardier Transportation e Siemens. A queste si aggiungono le aziende del Gruppo Vossloh di Francia, Germania e Spagna, che operano nel settore materiali rotabili e prodotti per binari. Sarà presente con uno stand anche il costruttore polacco PESA Bydgoszcz.

Tra i partecipanti nel settore segnalazione e comunicazioni, figurano Ansaldo STS e Thales Italia. Il settore delle infrastrutture e delle attrezzature per la costruzione e la manutenzione sarà rappresentato da Plasser & Theurer, congiuntamente a Plasser Italia e Matisa, mentre i fornitori di prodotti per binari partecipanti all’evento includono Schwihag e Voestalpine VAE Italia. EXPO Ferroviaria 2014 ha richiamato anche l’attenzione anche dei principali costruttori di sottosistemi e componenti per materiali rotabili, ad esempio Dako-CZ, Hübner Italia, Knorr-Bremse e ZF Friedrichshafen/ZF Italia, oltre che di sistemi per la manutenzione delle vetture come Bertolotti e Vogelsang Maschinenbau.
