It is time for “Humans 4.0”.

The paradox of the fourth industrial revolution, the era of the Digital Factory, is that human capital will remain a crucial resource to seize its opportunities. With the advent of the concept of Industry 4.0, the dichotomy between man and robot has been overcome and replaced by the centrality of human resources in the digitisation process.

The incentives that all European governments have given to companies willing to invest in machines and plants 4.0 have been widely used to renew production lines and create digital, interconnected factories that track production, predict errors, and perform necessary maintenance. Now it is time for these companies to invest in human resources. Extremely specialised technical skills will be needed, some of which perhaps do not exist, yet. Graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and super-experts are the most sought after by global companies, and they will be for many years to come. However, the question is if the current educational offer will be able to meet the demands of the world of work in the next five years.

The human factor must be enhanced even before technology. There are no technology and innovation, without adequate human resources. The technological changes call for a different education and culture for students and workers. Strengthening the school-work link, as many European countries are doing, is certainly one of the keys to preparing the new generations of engineers to the reality of the digital factory, which develops so quickly that knowledge becomes obsolete within a few years. Plug & play training and the development of professionals ready to enter specific work environments are the solutions to reduce the gap between students’ education and businesses’ needs.

The ipcm Academy project, i.e. the professional training courses organised by the ipcm® magazine, is aimed precisely at this. The different modules make up a training course able to refine the professional skills of participants and offer immediate specialisation. ipcm Academy has very interesting development projects in store, in line with the demands of the manufacturing world for 2019 and 2020.

2019 is the year of ipcm®’s 10th anniversary.

Therefore, we start this year full of energies and ready to work!

Il paradosso della quarta rivoluzione industriale, l’era della Fabbrica Digitale, è che il capitale umano rimarrà la risorsa principale per raccoglierne le opportunità. Con l’avvento del concetto di Industria 4.0 si è superata la dicotomia fra uomo e robot in favore della centralità delle risorse umane nel processo di digitalizzazione.

Gli incentivi che tutti i paesi europei hanno dato alle aziende disposte ad investire in macchine e impianti 4.0 sono stati ampiamente sfruttati per rinnovare le linee produttive e creare fabbriche digitali, interconnesse, in grado di tracciare la produzione, prevedere gli errori e la manutenzione necessaria. Adesso è il momento, per queste aziende, di investire nel personale umano.

Servono competenze tecniche estremamente specializzate, alcune delle quali forse ancora non esistono. I laureati nelle materie STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) e i super-periti sono - e lo saranno per molti anni a venire – i più ricercati dalle aziende mondiali. La domanda da porsi, tuttavia, è se l’attuale offerta formativa sarà in grado di soddisfare la richiesta del mondo del lavoro nei prossimi 5 anni.

Il fattore umano deve essere valorizzato ancora prima della tecnologia. Non c’è tecnologia, non c’è innovazione senza risorse umane adeguate: i cambiamenti tecnologici richiedono una formazione e una cultura diversa per studenti e lavoratori.

Potenziare il link scuola-lavoro, già molto diffuso nei paesi europei, è sicuramente una delle chiavi per preparare le nuove generazioni di tecnici alla realtà della fabbrica digitale, una realtà che si sviluppa così velocemente che le conoscenze acquisite diventano obsolete nel giro di pochi anni.

La formazione plug & play, lo sviluppo di una professionalità tale da renderne possibile l’inserimento immediato in uno specifico contesto lavorativo, è la soluzione per ridurre il gap fra la preparazione dei giovani e la necessità delle imprese.

Il progetto ipcm Academy, i corsi di formazione professionale organizzati dalla rivista ipcm®, vanno in questa direzione: i diversi moduli compongono un percorso formativo in grado di affinare le competenze professionali dei partecipanti e offrono una specializzazione immediata. Ipcm Academy ha in cantiere progetti di sviluppo molto interessanti e allineati alle richieste del mondo del lavoro manifatturiero per il 2019 e il 2020.

orrosion is an immediate and pressing problem for anyone who builds, maintains, and utilizes steel equipment and structures.

Asset owners make significant investments in preventing the occurrence and spread of corrosion, as well as in repairing corrosion damage. According to data from NACE International, the estimated annual direct cost of corrosion in the U.S. is $276 billion – approximately 3.1% of the nation’s total GDPI. That figure is not an outlier; similar costs apply globally. In China, it’s $310 billion USD, or 3.34% of GDPII. In turn, preventing corrosion could result in global savings between 15-35% of the cost of damage, or anywhere between $375 billion and

Self-healing additives also reduce total cost of ownership. Performance improvements are an important consideration for any asset owner. However, the total cost of ownership is just as important. Hence, any discussion of an improved anticorrosion solution must consider the cost impacts of the solution.

This paper presents financial models for multiple scenarios demonstrating how AMI’s self-healing additives are cost-beneficial.

Specifically, AMI’s self-healing additives can lower the cost of maintaining assets in both moderate and extreme locations; from ubiquitous urban water towers to remote offshore oil rigs. In this case study, we will examine the economic benefit of using self-healing additives in both applications1.

Service life and cost considerations for self-healing coatings in a moderate environment: municipal water towers

Large urban water storage structures may not face the extreme corrosive conditions that can bedevil steel structures in more damaging environments, like those encountered in marine settings, but the consequences of corrosion can be just as serious. Corrosion was blamed in the collapse of a Kentucky water tower in 2014, for example. “I think it was very fortunate this was not a more serious incident,” Andrew Melnykovych, a member of the Kentucky Public Service Commission, told a local news affiliate at the time. “It reinforces the importance of maintaining infrastructure.”IV Indeed, even if most water towers escape such a fate, it’s only thanks to the continuous effort and expense dedicated to maintaining and protecting these structures. Even mild corrosion at 10 mils per year will pierce ¼-inch thick plate in 24 years, a fraction of the serviceable life of the structure – and structural failure

will occur long before total penetration.V Water towers are furthermore exposed to a series of environmental conditions that can contribute to corrosion: fluctuating temperatures, rainfall and relative humidity, common urban pollutants, sun exposure, etc.

As a result, most water towers will require as many as half a dozen re-coatings during their lifespan, with each coating not only incurring direct added expense but also imposing service disruptions.

Water towers thus offer an excellent glimpse into the impact of self-healing coatings on a steel structure; the nature and extent of corrosion risks facing a water tower are very common. Modelling the impact of self-healing coatings on this type of structure thus helps to illustrate the impact on many kinds of structures.

Exterior coatings with self-healing agents incorporated into the formulation can extend the lifespan of each individual coating, potentially significantly; and municipalities can reap significant cost savings as a result.

To determine the lifetime cost of coatings for a municipal water tower meeting the characteristics described in Table 1, we include all painting operations required to protect the structure for its complete service life. We assume a typical maintenance sequence that includes: • the original coating; • spot touch-ups and repairs; • maintenance repaints (spot priming and a full overcoat); • full repaint (total coating removal and replacement).

Note that all costs have been rendered into Net Present Value (NPV) costs. Because of their long life, capital assets require complex financial modelling to understand costs over their full lifespan.

Net Future Value (NFV – not represented in this table) incorporates inflation (here assumed to be 3%) into the costs. In other words, NFV tells us how much the touch up, maintenance repaint, and full repaint will cost in the (future) year in which it happens.

Net Present Value (NPV), in turn, works backwards from NFV to tell us the present worth, in today’s dollars invested at a current interest rate of 4%, of the inflated cost of future painting work. In other words, NPV allows us to understand future costs in today’s dollars and gives us an equal basis for comparing the costs of different scenarios.

Scenario #1 (the first row), based on a 12-year service life, is the control: this line assumes three coats of waterborne acrylic, none of which contain self-healing agents. With an asset life of 50 years, this means two complete typical maintenance painting sequences (one initial painting, two touch ups, two maintenance repaints, and two full repaints).

For this scenario, we can reasonably estimate the lifetime cost per square foot of a typical three-coating system to be $63.08. This is the baseline against which we will compare the cost effectiveness of the self-healing agent.

Self-Healing Paint Cost Savings Scenarios The effectiveness of self-healing coatings depends on many factors, which makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly how much the selfhealing technology will extend paint service life.

Accelerated corrosion tests have shown that, depending on the paint system, service life can be extended up to 9x. However, for our cost models, we kept estimates conservative, so our model only examines examples that range from modest life extension up to approximately double the standard service life, as shown in Table 2 (Scenarios #2-4). For example, in Scenario #2, we are extending paint service life by 3 years (from 12 years to 15). Although self-healing paint is more expensive than the control (for the purposes of this exercise, we are assuming that the cost of the self-healing primer coat is double (2X) the cost of the standard primer coat), the extension in paint service life obviates the need for the second full repainting. As a result, the lifetime cost per square foot falls to $53.37, a cost savings of 15.4%.

PROTECTIVE COATINGS | ANALYSIS In Scenario #4, we are assuming paint service lifespan nearly doubles to 23 years. This means the initial coating lasts for almost half of the asset’s lifespan before even the first touch-up is required. As a result, the entire second maintenance painting sequence (second touch up, second maintenance repaint, second full repaint) is eliminated. Over the lifetime of the asset, the asset owner will pay a full 37.0% less.

Table 3 shows an illustration of how this breaks down into total costs.

Note, the Average Equivalent Annual Cost (AEAC) “converts the entire stream of present and future costs to a present worth (NPV) and then distributes that sum in equal annual amounts over the structure’s life”, as explained by NACE. In this case, total lifetime cost savings in these scenarios range from $678,209 for the most conservative estimate, up to $1,631,5112.

Maintenance Costs Fall Under All Scenarios To reiterate, the effectiveness of self-healing coatings depends on many factors. The point of these scenarios is to demonstrate that costs fall significantly with virtually any amount of paint service life extension – even when the cost of the coating is itself higher than normal paint.

In fact, testing reveals that all these scenarios are conservative. Doubling the paint service lifespan might seem excessively hopeful at first glance, but extensive testing has found that self-healing agents can triple or greater the effective paint service lifespan. For example, the following test found a life extension exceeding 300% (Fig. 2).

financial modelling at twice the normal lifespan to keep our estimates conservative.

There are two mechanisms at work. First, due to the initial release of healing agents, the onset of adhesion loss around the damage is delayed, so the coating lasts longer before any loss of adhesion (the flat portion of the blue line). Then, once the coating starts losing adhesion, the rate of loss is slower because the damage is constantly rupturing new self-healing microcapsules; that’s why the slope of the blue line is not as steep as the red line.

Service life and cost considerations for self-healing coatings in a harsh and highly damaging environment: offshore oil platforms

The example of a municipal water tower helps us to see that self-healing agents can yield significant savings over time, but admittedly, municipal structures typically face only moderate corrosive distress. Our next example demonstrates that self-healing additives yield similar benefits in more extreme conditions.

An offshore platform faces some of the most extreme corrosive conditions that can be found in any industry or environment. In fact, with parts of the platform either immersed in seawater or constantly exposed to a splash zone and salt air, the steel corrosion can exceed 100 mils per year – ten times the typical rate of corrosion for our water tower example above. In turn, those high corrosion rates translate into frequent maintenance repaint cycles: the more extreme the

environment, the shorter the service life, the costlier the asset (Fig. 3).

Complicating this situation, the repaint cycle may not be implemented as rigorously as desired because of the difficulties of working in harsh environments – further adding cost and eroding serviceable lifespan. The logistical requirements of working in a space-constrained environment in a remote location can put pressure on workers to work fast and light. That, in turn, can result in workers taking unhelpful shortcuts. KTA University, which provides education and instruction around protective coatings, writes: “Too often, the level of diligence in performing the surface preparation of welded or hot work areas and the reinstatement of the coating systems after the consolidation, is atrocious. It is not unusual to see evidence of epoxy coatings being poured out onto an uncleaned deck and spread out with a yard broom.

The indelible proof, including the tread pattern from the worker’s boots, was still visible months or years later.

Stories are in circulation of a hardhat being used as a bucket to carry paint that was then just poured onto weld joints on deck plates.”VI In other words, touch-ups, maintenance painting, and full repaints are not just a matter of slapping on another coat of paint but requires intense coordination and downtime on a structure that normally runs 24 hours a day.

Fortunately, self-healing paint can remediate these logistical issues in addition to reducing costs. As with the municipal water tower, we have modelled the costs for a variety of scenarios. We include the same sequence of paint operations to protect the hypothetical structure (detailed in Table 4) for its complete service life.

Fortunatamente la vernice autoriparante può rimediare alle questioni logistiche, oltre a ridurre i costi. Come per la torre idrica municipale, abbiamo modellato i costi su una varietà di scenari. Table 5 presents the total costs per square foot, including both materials and labour, of each painting sequence.

As before, the first row is the control: a standard coating system with a 12-year service life. Given the structure’s relatively short serviceable lifespan of 25 years, even the standard system sees only one touch up, maintenance repaint, and full repaint. Those paint cycles are quite costly, given the difficulties described above.

However, the high cost of the coating system for offshore oil platforms is exactly what makes the self-healing coatings even more cost-efficient for this application. By eliminating one or more entire elements of the standard paint cycle, it reduces the total cost enormously. In fact, the self-healing coating achieves even greater savings, up to 53.9% in the scenario positing that the self-healing coating system offers a 23-year service life.

Table 6 shows a breakdown of how this breaks down into AEAC costs.

Is it possible for self-healing agents to extend the lifespan of the coating system up to 23 years and thus save nearly $10 million over its life?

We had an asset owner request testing to determine the answer to that very question. In Figure 4, we see the results of that testing. Their structure was deployed in a harsh environment, and with the customer’s current coating system, it consequently experienced a short paint service lifetime (the red line) of about 8-10 years. Their performance improvement target was for an increase in the service life to 10-12 years (the blue line), and as the NACE financial model demonstrates (Table 5), even such a modest increase would pay for itself very quickly.

However, to determine the actual increase in paint service life and cost savings when using self-healing additives, we took this end-user’s system, added our self-healing capsules, and tested service life side-by-side over six months.

Infatti la vernice autoriparante consente risparmi ancora maggiori, fino al 53,9% nello scenario in cui si suppone che questo prodotto offra una vita utile di 23 anni.

La tabella 6 mostra una ripartizione di ciò sul costo medio equivalente annuo. È possibile per gli agenti autoriparanti estendere la vita del rivestimento fino a 23 anni e risparmiare così un totale di quasi 10 milioni di dollari?

Il proprietario di un asset ci ha chiesto di eseguire dei test per determinare la risposta a questa domanda. Nella figura 4 vediamo il risultato delle prove. Il loro obiettivo di miglioramento delle prestazioni era aumentarne la durata fino a 10-12 anni (linea blu) e, come dimostra il modello finanziario del NACE (tabella 5), anche un così piccolo incremento avrebbe ripagato molto velocemente.

Tuttavia per determinare l’aumento effettivo del ciclo di vita della vernice e il risparmio con l’utilizzo degli additivi autoriparanti abbiamo aggiunto le nostre capsule auto-riparanti al sistema del cliente, testandone la durata fianco a fianco nell’arco di sei mesi.

It should be reiterated that these models, which show greatly reduced volumes of coating, assume a price premium of double the cost of standard. Consequently, self-healing additives can create a win-win scenario for everyone, including paint formulators and manufacturers as well as end-users. Indeed, paint manufacturers have an opportunity to extend market share through a highly differentiated product with enormous potential value, while charging a premium to account for the reformulation expense and thus improving margins per gallon of paint. Still, even with the increased cost, self-healing paints still enable the end-user to save money over the full lifecycle of the product.

Using calculations provided by NACE, we have shown that end-users can reasonably save hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars if they can extend the lifetime of the paint by even just a few years.

Furthermore, those potentially massive savings even incorporate an increase in the cost of the coating.

Coatings must be reformulated to adjust for pigment volume concentration, pigment size distribution, resin chemistry to achieve desired glass transition temperature (Tg), etc. As a result, reformulation does add some up-front cost in addition to the cost of the healing agents, but this cost is minimal in the context of the ROI to end-users and coating suppliers.

Even if the cost of the coating doubles, the extension in serviceable lifespan more than covers the increased price. Fundamentally, the self-healing additive effectively makes every gallon of paint less expensive.

It’s also worth noting that the cost of the coating itself is typically only a fraction of the total costs associated with the total paint maintenance sequence – particularly for structures that present logistical difficulties, like offshore oil platforms (Fig. 5).

The extended lifespan, however, continues to pay dividends throughout the asset’s lifespan by: • preventing corrosion of the underlying substrate; • maintaining adhesion to the substrate even after coating damage occurs; • providing additional protection in areas of marginal coating application and difficult-to-inspect areas; • reducing environmental impact by lowering VOC emissions released; • reducing material and labour costs as the frequency and size scale of recoating is reduced; • reducing business disruption and lost opportunity costs; • increasing overall asset lifetime because of longer lasting coatings.

Inoltre, questi notevoli potenziali risparmi incorporano già l’aumento del costo della vernice. Vale anche la pena notare che il costo del rivestimento stesso è tipicamente solo una frazione dei costi totali associati alla completa sequenza di verniciatura manutentiva – in particolare per le strutture che presentano difficoltà logistiche, come le piattaforme petrolifere offshore (fig. 5).

L’estensione della vita utile, comunque, continua a pagare dividendi durante il ciclo di vita del bene grazie a: • prevenzione della corrosione del substrato sottostante; • mantenimento dell’adesione al substrato anche dopo il verificarsi di danni alla vernice; • protezione aggiuntiva in aree con applicazione di vernice marginale o difficili da ispezionare; • riduzione dell’impatto ambientale grazie alla diminuzione delle emissioni di COV; • riduzione del costo di materiali e manodopera poiché la frequenza e la dimensione delle riverniciature si riduce; • riduzione dei costi derivanti dalle interruzioni operative e dalla perdita di opportunità; • aumento generale della vita utile del bene grazie a vernici che durano di più.

In short, any paint system for a big structure – regardless of composition, complexity, environment, or surface preparation – will see improved service life and cost effectiveness by incorporating self-healing agents. Further, the more it costs to maintain a structure and the more severe the environment it faces, the greater the proportional cost savings will be (Fig. 6). Ultimately, almost any scenario will benefit from using a self-healing coating system. ‹

a corrosione nei sistemi di raffreddamento degli statori generatori è un serio problema, poiché può ostruire il flusso di acqua di raffreddamento e ridurre l’efficienza del sistema, causando con il passare del tempo dei problemi operativi (fig. 1). Anche gli inibitori di corrosione per le prove idrostatiche e i sistemi di raffreddamento nell’industria nucleare devono avere requisiti particolari, nello specifico un basso contenuto di sodio.

Cortec® Corporation, grande sostenitrice della chimica organica negli inibitori di corrosione, ha sviluppato un prodotto semplice da utilizzare nei sistemi di raffreddamento in cui sono richiesti bassa conducibilità e basso contenuto di sodio (fig. 2). Basato solamente su componenti organici, VpCI®-648 non contiene nitriti o altri ioni alogeni. Because of low conductivity requirements, corrosion inhibitors must meet special parameters for use in generator stators. Corrosion inhibitors for hydrostatic testing and layup of cooling water systems in the nuclear industry are also limited, in this case by low sodium restrictions.

Cortec® Corporation, a strong proponent of organic chemistry corrosion inhibitors, has developed a simple water treatment for use in cooling systems where low conductivity or low sodium products are required (Fig. 2). Based solely on organic components, VpCI®-648 does not contain nitrites or any halogen counter ions. At recommended dosages, VpCI®-648 does not significantly contribute to the conductivity of water systems. VpCI®-648 protects both

In addition to being used to avoid clogging and slowing from corrosion in water-cooled generator stators during operation, VpCI®-648 can be used during layup or hydrostatic testing of low conductivity or low sodium systems, making it ideal for offline preservation of nuclear industry cooling water systems, as well as generator stators. This is an important step to protect valuable equipment from corrosion during an idle period or after it is hydrotested for leaks.

VpCI®-648 is specifically intended for corrosion protection of water-cooled generator stators in the power industry, but it is also applicable to other cooling systems where a low conductivity or low sodium product is required. Applications include the following low conductivity cutting operations: • EDM machining; • Plasma arc machining; • Laser cutting operations (Fig. 3).

a campana “Petersglocke” della cattedrale di Colonia (fig. 1) risuona dopo 18 mesi di silenzio.

La tradizionale tecnologia della campana incontra tecniche di costruzione e verniciatura all’avanguardia.

Nell’estate 2016, un’indagine del centro europeo di competenza per le campane ECC-ProBell ha rivelato che colpi irregolari del battaglio, risultati dal foro sfalsato nella copertura della campana, hanno portato il “Dicke Pitter” a non emettere più il suo suono abituale. Successivamente si è scoperto che un riposizionamento del battaglio potrebbe non solo produrre un suono migliore, ma anche contribuire alla protezione duratura di Petersglocke.

In collaborazione con l’Università di Scienze Applicate di Colonia, l’autorità per la costruzione della cattedrale ha sviluppato un nuovo supporto, realizzato dall’azienda Dirostahl.

Qual è la particolarità di questo supporto? È fabbricato da un singolo pezzo forgiato e può essere spostato orizzontalmente al millimetro attraverso due doppi componenti eccentrici. Inoltre, è dotato di un dado di serraggio HEICO-TEC® che garantisce un serraggio sicuro alla barra che sostiene il battaglio e fissa la campana. Questo supporto è unico nel suo genere a livello mondiale. inging out again after 18 months of silence: the bell “Petersglocke” of Cologne cathedral (Fig. 1).

Traditional bell technology meets state-of-theart construction and coating techniques.

In the summer of 2016 an investigation by the European competence centre for bells ECC-ProBell revealed that uneven striking of the clapper – as a result of the offset hole in the bell cover – meant that the “Dicke Pitter” was no longer emitting its customary sound.

It was subsequently discovered that a repositioning of the bell clapper could not only result in an improved sound, but also contribute to the long-lasting 1 protection of the Petersglocke.

In collaboration with the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, the cathedral construction authority developed a new mount, to be realised by the company Dirostahl.

The special feature of this mount? It is milled from a single forged piece and can be moved horizontally to the millimetre via two double eccentric components. In addition, it is also equipped with 2 a HEICO-TEC® clamping nut that guarantees a defined torque in the rod that carries the clapper and secures the bell. This mount is unique of its kind worldwide.

It is all the more important that this bearing element is protected against corrosion. This is where the corrosion experts from Dörken MKS came in. Working

Dopo il riposizionamento del supporto e del battaglio di circa 600 kg, la campana di quasi 100 anni è tornata a risuonare in occasione di Ognissanti, dotata di una soluzione per la protezione dalla corrosione altamente efficiente di Dörken MKS (fig. 4).

together with inhouse and contract coater Lisi Automotive BETEO Oberflächentechnik GmbH & Co. KG, the company applied the newly-developed product DELTA-PROTEKT® KL 170 RT to coat the mount. The sacrificial behaviour of the zinc flake coating delivers cathodic corrosion protection (Fig. 2).

A particular benefit of the new product: The protective coat has a thickness of just 4–20μm and dries at room temperature, eliminating the need for a curing oven. This meant that it 3 could be applied to the 780 kg component on site, in the belfry of Cologne cathedral, via spray application (Fig. 3). The clamping nut is also securely protected against corrosion.

After the mount and the approximately 600kg clapper were brought back into position, the nearly 100-year-old bell was able to ring out again to mark All Saints. Equipped with a highly-efficient corrosion protection solution from Dörken MKS (Fig. 4).

he coating industry is certainly among the most dynamic and ever-evolving sectors. Innovation does not only involve colours and finishes, which go hand in hand with market trends, but it also concerns the application methods, with the aim of combining quality and advanced technologies with a more efficient process in terms of costs and times.

That is why ST Powder Coatings (Montecchio Maggiore, VI, Italy - Fig. 1), a company specialising in the production of powder coatings, has started an intensive R&D program to meet a new market requirement that was first imposed in Germany (Fig. 2). The result was the development of a powder-on-powder technology enabling to apply a topcoat immediately after primer, without any intermediate gelation stage and with

In quest’ottica, ST Powder Coatings, azienda di Montecchio Maggiore (VI, fig. 1), specializzata nella produzione di vernici in polvere, ha intrapreso un intenso programma di ricerca e sviluppo per far fronte ad una nuova esigenza di mercato, scaturita inizialmente dalla Germania (fig. 2). Il risultato ottenuto è stato lo sviluppo di una tecnologia polvere su polvere che permette l’applicazione del topcoat subito dopo l’applicazione del primer, sen-

standard application methods. ST Powder Coatings presented its Powder on Powder technology for the first time in May 2018, on the occasion of the XVI Wagner Symposium held in Poland (ref. Opening photo). This is a revolutionary system, among the first in Italy, which guarantees a considerable reduction in the coating time and process optimisation.

One of the main issues of powder-on-powder systems without an intermediate gelation stage has always been the application of a finish with the same electrostatic charge of the primer, which entails the risk of mixing and distension problems. In order to overcome these problems, it is necessary to reconsider the application technology used, opting for triboelectric application systems, not widely used, or hybrid systems, i.e. triboelectric and Corona.

ST Powder Coatings has developed a technology that can be applied with the widespread Corona system without any qualitative problems, although without a primer gelation phase before the topcoat application.

To guarantee maximum performance in the subsequent finishing phase, three hybrid primers have been developed, in three different colours: 1 white (to be used with lightcoloured finishes), black (for dark-coloured finishes), and grey (for all other tints).

The choice to develop three primers with the same chemical nature but in different colours was dictated by the will to minimise all problems related to the risk of mixing primers and topcoats, which can compromise the final quality level (especially for light colours): should this happen, the result would be however guaranteed by the colour matching of the primer and the topcoat. Another factor that played a crucial role in the development of these primers was the environment: they are eco-friendly, since they do not contain zinc or other harmful substances.

The development of specific primers allows to use finishes that are already present in the ST range, without having to resort to specially designed products. The tests performed did not find any

Fino ad oggi, uno dei problemi principali dei sistemi polvere su polvere che non prevedono uno stadio di gelificazione intermedio si riscontra nella difficoltà di applicare una finitura avente la stessa carica elettrostatica del primer, che comporta il rischio di mescolamento e problemi di distensione delle vernici.

Per ovviare a queste problematiche è necessario ripensare l’intera tecnologia applicativa, ricorrendo ad applicazioni triboelettriche poco diffuse oppure a sistemi ibridi (triboelettrici e Corona).

ST Powder Coatings ha messo a punto una tecnologia che può essere applicata con il diffuso sistema Corona, senza incorrere in problemi qualitativi, pur non prevedendo una fase di gelificazione del primer prima della spruzzatura del topcoat.

Per garantire le massime prestazioni nella successiva fase di finitura, sono stati sviluppati tre primer ibridi, di tre colori diversi: bianco, da impiegare nel caso in cui la finitura preveda colori chiari; nero, per finiture con tinte scure; grigio per tutte le altre tinte. La scelta di sviluppare tre primer della stessa natura chimica ma di colori differenti è stata dettata dalla volontà di ridurre il più possibile i problemi derivabili dal rischio di mescolamento di primer e topcoat, che potrebbe inficiare la qualità finale soprattutto per le tinte chiare: qualora dovesse insorgere il problema, il risultato finale è comunque garantito dalla correlazione dei colori di primer e topcoat.

Un altro fattore che ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo dei primer è l’ambiente: in ottica di ecocompatibilità, essi non contengono zinco o altre sostanze nocive.

problems of distension of the coatings, which present the same properties of a one-layer system. Currently, the finishes suitable for this process can be smooth, glossy, semi glossy, and matte.

The Powder on Powder product range has excellent anti-corrosion qualities: it was subjected to a salt spray test for a cycle of 5000 hours on sheets pre-treated with zinc phosphates. This paves the way for the use of powder coatings in many sectors, even those that have always preferred liquid paints, such as the heavy industry and corrosion protection ones. For optimal results, it is necessary to respect some parameters and follow the application suggestions, also with regard to the guns’ voltage.

Generally, the primers can be 2 applied under standard voltage conditions, whereas the topcoats require a slightly lower voltage. This system also guarantees greater elasticity, which depends on how the primer is applied. ST Powder Coatings’ engineers recommend to apply not too high thicknesses to achieve both greater film elasticity and improved finish application.

Usually, the recommended total thickness of the coating is between 100 and 150 microns.

In terms of application equipment, no system changes are required: it is sufficient to adjust the application process depending on the system installed. If there are not two booths on the line, it is possible to provide for a double application process in the available booth. The final polymerisation temperature depends on the selected ST topcoat.

The powder coatings of the Powder on Powder range feature excellent corrosion resistance and they contribute to significant savings in terms of plant management costs and an increase in hourly productivity. The possibility of using these products without any special arrangements and with commonly used technologies makes them versatile and easy to use in most industrial sectors. ‹

Questo sistema è in grado di garantire anche una maggiore elasticità, che dipende da come viene applicato il primer. I tecnici ST Powder Coatings consigliano spessori non troppo elevati, sia per ottenere una maggiore elasticità del film sia per un’applicazione migliorata della finitura. These will include a full understanding of the site, the specific environment it will be applied in and what is being produced in that facility.

For years, epoxy resin flooring has been the flooring coating of choice largely because of its hardness, and so its assumed abrasion resistance. However, because it is softer, the new Resuthane product range has in fact an abrasion resistance of three to five times that of the epoxy resins.

When it comes to hygiene standards, this range offers additional benefits including seamless joints with a reduced risk of failure and bacteria growth.

Other features include slip-resistance and thermal shock protection which enables steam or pressure cleaning. It is also a non-taint product because of its solvent-free, water-based formulation and is suitable for all dry or wet process areas.

As a proven product used widely throughout the food and beverage sector, Resuthane is approved as a non–taint and food safe product

by Campden BRI, the UK’s largest independent food and drink research & development organisation.

Moreover, these products are also independently tested for slip and abrasion resistance by Aston University in accordance with BS 8204 Part 2.

As evidence of its track record since coming onto the market, the project to satisfy the requirements at Billingsgate Market in London’s East End is testament indeed.

Working closely with the Corporation of London and the installation team, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings delivered the Resuthane TG69 system for the flooring, a water-based polyurethane concrete resin screed.

More than a decade after it was installed, the floor shines brightly below the traffic of people and goods as the bustling market goes about its business, demonstrating the future-proof benefits of Resuthane TG69.

The brief from the market more than 10 years ago was to provide a rapid solution that was not only fit for purpose and exceptionally durable, but would not disrupt the market’s day-to-day operations in the complex.

The technical team worked hard to fully understand the requirements of this sensitive food environment before choosing this system, and the research and development that went into this coating gave them the confidence of recommending it throughout.

The ground floor of the market comprises a large trading hall with 98 stands and 30 shops, including two cafes; a number of individual cold rooms; a 1,500 tonne freezer store; an ice making plant and 14 lock-up shops (Fig. 1).

Removal of the existing flooring system

Where an existing floor is being refurbished, consideration should be given as to whether the existing flooring system needs to be removed.

There is some risk in leaving the original system in place, as there is no way to know whether the existing floor was prepped properly when originally installed.

This decision depends on the type of floor being covered and the type being installed - the new system needs to adhere properly to the existing one. It is 1 advisable to perform a mock-up test first in a small area (as little as 1 m2 [10 sf ]) to confirm the application will hold.

If an existing system needs to be removed, crews have to peel it off and then remove any remaining glues and curing compounds via chemical and/or mechanical means.

For example, crews may need to use citric acid to soften and remove glue, and they may need to shot-blast, grind, mill, or even scarify the surface to fully remove the adhesive and get the surface to a smooth finish. In extreme cases, a flooring renovation will require breaking up the concrete base and pouring a new substrate.

pochi passi da Times Square, Broadway e dal Garment District, c’è il nuovissimo AC Hotel by Marriott con il tocco di Teknos. Le luminose strutture in acciaio bianco della facciata dell’hotel sono state rivestite dalla società Vrhovine d.o.o. con il sistema verniciante epossipoliuretanico di Teknos (figg. 1 e 2).

L’AC Hotel New York Times Square, situato all’incrocio tra la 260 W e la 40esima strada, è stato inaugurato a marzo 2018 (fig. 3). Nonostante gli hotel AC siano diffusi in tutto il mondo, le loro radici si trovano in Europa, dove sono state prodotte e rivestite anche le strutture in acciaio dell’ultima arrivata della catena alberghiera a New York.

Vrhovine d.o.o. è un’azienda croata specializzata in cantieristica navale e nella realizzazione di costruzioni metalliche. La società ha avviato una stretta collaborazione con Teknos Hrvatska nel luglio 2017. La partnership tra le due società si basa su un eccellente rapporto reciproco, sul rispetto e sulla professionalità.

The radiant white steel structures of the Hotel’s façade were painted by the Vrhovine d.o.o. company using Teknos’ epoxy-polyurethane paint system (Figs. 1 and 2).

The AC Hotel New York Times Square, located on the 260 West 40th Street, was opened in March 2018 (Fig. 3).

Although AC Hotels have spread around the world, their roots lie in Europe. Also, the steel structures of the hotel chain’s latest addition in New York were manufactured and painted in Europe.

Vrhovine d.o.o. is a Croatian company specialised in shipbuilding and manufacturing of metal constructions. The company started close cooperation with Teknos Hrvatska in July 2017.

The cooperation between the two companies is based on an excellent mutual relationship, respect and professionalism.

The project was a breakthrough for both Teknos and its customer Vrhovine d.o.o. It was a demanding and high-quality project, which required a great deal of creativity also on Teknos’ behalf.

It has high mechanical resistance, it can be cut, folded, and welded easily, it has low production costs, and the raw material to produce it is abundant. Thanks to these characteristics, it is widely used in the construction of metal structures with the most diverse shapes, sizes, and applications, since there is, in fact, no material capable of replacing it.

The only problem with steel is corrosion. That is why all metal structures should be adequately protected with protective coatings, corrosion inhibitors, cathodic protection systems, and other techniques. The industrial coating technology, in particular, plays an important role in the framework of corrosion protection.

However, it is very well suited for outdoor structures, whereas the mere application of paints and coatings is not efficient with underground or submerged structures, which cannot be inspected easily and tend to be forgotten after construction (ref. Opening photo): in these cases, it is always necessary to integrate this technology with a cathodic protection system.

As is well known, alloy elements are often added to make steel more resistant to corrosive processes. That is the case, for example, of stainless steels. However, this technique makes the material more expensive and it is only employed for very special applications. The use of stainless steels in underground or submerged structures, for instance, is neither economic nor efficient, as chloride can jeopardise the steels’ passivity; therefore, it is limited to pipelines carrying special products, although always for the purpose of internal protection and never to guarantee external protection.

A large number of important metal structures exist throughout the world that must be buried or submerged and whose maintenance worries the engineers entrusted with it. These are generally conduits (oil and gas pipelines, kerosene, alcohol, and mineral pipelines, conduction pipes, waste water pipes, and multi-pipelines), structural metal elements of reinforced or pre-stressed concrete for bridges, viaducts, and buildings (in fact, concrete can absorb moisture and act as an electrolyte), offshore oil and gas platforms (including submerged pipelines and equipment), ships and boats (including ballast tanks), storage tanks for water, oil, and derivatives, poles and metal roofs of ports and terminals, sewage and waste water treatment stations, electricity production facilities, foundations of high voltage electric repeaters, refineries and industrial plants in general, and

Questa tecnologia, tuttavia, rende il materiale più costoso ed è utilizzata solamente per applicazioni molto speciali. L’uso degli acciai inossidabili nelle installazioni interrate o sommerse, per esempio, non è né economica né efficiente (il cloruro può distruggere la passività di questi acciai), essendo limitato ai casi di condotte che trasportano prodotti speciali, sempre con lo scopo di protezione interna e mai per una garanzia di protezione esterna.

As can be deduced, the world is made of steel.

However, all these structures need to be protected against corrosion, the only “sin” of steel. Failure to do so could have disastrous consequences for man, the economy, and the environment, in the case of leaks in pipelines carrying dangerous, flammable, or polluting products in inhabited regions or even deserted areas near rivers or streams.

In order to effectively protect these structures against corrosion, the only reliable, economical, and safe solution available is the use of cathodic protection systems, which should be installed correctly and custom-designed for each specific structure. In large cities, for example, only the installation of cathodic protection systems enables the underground pipes of gas and water distribution networks to coexist in harmony with the electric traction systems of trains, subways, and light transport vehicles. Electric traction systems heavily interfere with buried pipelines, causing severe electrolytic corrosion and damaging the pipes, if these are not adequately protected. In these cases, only cathodic protection systems combined with a leakage current drain system can guarantee the integrity of pipelines and the safety of people.

Protective coatings, as is known, create a theoretically insulating barrier that protects steel.

In the case of buried or submerged structures, however, this barrier is not sufficient to guarantee protection against corrosion, because, in practice, it is never perfect, as it presents pores and defects, enables moisture absorption, ages over time, and favours the development of corrosive processes. Cathodic protection is an electrical phenomenon that works by injecting current into the metal structure in order to modify its potential in relation to the electrolyte (soil, water, or concrete), thus preventing corrosion cells from activating.

Without cathodic protection systems, for example, it would be impossible to safely distribute water and gas in large cities, transport 34

Nelle grandi città, per esempio, solamente l’installazione di protezione catodica permette alle tubazioni interrate dei sistemi di distribuzione di gas e acqua di coesistere in armonia con i sistemi di trazione elettrica dei treni, delle metropolitane e dei mezzi di trasporto leggeri. I sistemi di trazione elettrica interferiscono pesantemente con le condotte interrate, causando una grave corrosione elettrolitica e danneggiando le tubazioni, se queste non sono state adeguatamente protette.

In questi casi, ancora una volta, solamente i sistemi di protezione catodica, abbinati ad un sistema di drenaggio delle correnti di dispersione, sono in grado di garantire l’integrità delle condotte e la sicurezza della popolazione che vive in queste città. I rivestimenti protettivi, come sappiamo, consistono nell’applicazione di una barriera teoricamente isolante per la protezione dell’acciaio. Anche nel caso di strutture interrate o sommerse, questa barriera non è sufficiente a garantire la protezione contro la corrosione, poiché, in pratica, questa non è mai perfetta, presentando pori e difetti, consentendo l’assorbimento dell’umidità, invecchiando con il trascorrere del tempo e favorendo lo sviluppo dei processi corrosivi. La protezione catodica è un fenomeno di natura elettrica, che funziona tramite l’iniezione di corrente nella struttura metallica, allo scopo di modificare il suo potenziale in rapporto all’elettrolita (terreno, acqua o cemento), eliminando la possibilità di attivazione delle pile di corrosione.

Senza la protezione catodica sarebbe impossibile, per esempio, distribuire acqua e gas in sicurezza nelle grandi città, trasportare persone e merci con navi e

people and goods with ships and boats, keep large buildings, bridges, and viaducts safe (especially in areas contaminated with chloride), extract, store, transport, refine, and distribute gas and oil products on land and especially at sea, and so on. Therefore, we can safely say that it is impossible for man to use carbon steel in his engineering works without the cathodic protection technology, as this would jeopardise or even hinder the industrial development of the whole world.

When we remember that there is no other material that can replace steel for these applications, realise that steel can be used safely only if properly protected against corrosion, and verify that only cathodic protection systems are efficient in these critical situations, then we understand the great importance of this technology. A modern world without cathodic protection would thus be unimaginable. ‹

The ease of application and fast production turnarounds have been proven during field trials at customers’ sites. One of the leading off-site painting applicators, specialising in intumescent coatings – Nanosteel – was keen to test the new Hempafire Pro 315 coating.

During the trials Nanosteel was not only delighted with the performance of the coating and time savings achieved during its application, but also with the high quality, professional finish. As a result, Nanosteel S.A. is now delighted to work with the new Hempafire Pro 315 coating, which adds to their service offering making Nanosteel S.A. more competitive in the marketplace.

According to Nanosteel the key benefits of the coating includes the faster drying times due to lower loadings, which in turn allows faster overcoating and handling (Fig. 1). The fact that the versatile and applicator-friendly intumescent coating covers all steel profiles means there is no need to carry additional stock of other alternative materials saving considerable space, cost and time.

Commenting on the trial, Artur Marques, Chief Executive Officer at Nanosteel S.A. said: “Due to the lower loadings of Hempafire Pro 315, we can now use less paint resulting in quicker drying times. t is no surprise that biomass plants are growing in popularity as they satisfy two main needs of the modern generation. First of all, they help reduce the amount of waste and, secondly, they produce energy in a sustainable way.

According to the International Energy Agency biomass generation is forecast to expand as planned projects come online. The global installed capacity for biomass generation is expected to reach close to 140 gigawatts (GW) by 2026, which will be fueled primarily by expansion in Asia using residues from food production and the forestry processing industry.

Application errors and mechanical damage during installation can result in pinholes within the glass lining. Aggressive chemicals produced during the anaerobic digestion process then attack the steel and corrosion can set in very quickly both at the liquid and gas phase.

The biogas produced by an AD consists primarily of the combustible gases - methane and carbon dioxide. At normal atmospheric conditions, the volume concentration of methane-in-air required to form an explosive mixture is between 5% (Lower Explosive Limit) and 15% (Upper Explosive Limit). This can be readily ignited by sparks from welding and maintenance operations, or even by static electricity discharge.

considered. 100% solids epoxy paste grade systems can be used to patch repair defects in the glass lining on the inside or to bond plates on the outside of the AD tanks to seal live leaks.

Epoxies have long been known for their excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates, including both steel and the glass linings.

The absence of solvent within the polymer matrix also makes them safe to use in confined spaces and prevents shrinkage during cure (Figs. 1 and 2).

Epoxy composites, such as Belzona 1111, are supplied as a two-part system with base and solidifier stored in separate modules. Once mixed, the hardening process starts and the material ultimately cures sealing leaks or preventing any defects from going through-wall. By their very nature, epoxies do not corrode and will protect the steel from any further corrosion attack.

Innovation In terms of using epoxy adhesives to restore integrity of the assets, prefabricated composite patches are now being considered in place of metal plates (Figs. 3 and 4).

The benefits of using a completely non-metallic solution ensure the repair is lightweight and has zero potential for corrosion 6 (Figs. 5 and 6). This application is becoming a preferred choice for water treatment sludge tanks, among others, and may be considered for anaerobic digester maintenance. ‹

significant benefit of this new product however is the speed of curing - hard dry and handling times may be as fast as one hour.

With the substantial advances made in intumescent coating technology, Sherwin-Williams can offer a broader range of benefits and options than ever before whether you’re an architect, a developer or an applicator. In modern construction, speed of build is critical and this product contributes to that goal (ref. Opening photo).

This is game-changing technology and allows for transport of steelwork within hours as compared to days currently for conventional water-based, solventbased and epoxy-based products.

Projects carried out using the original FX6000 product found vastly reduced damage on shop-painted steelwork once erected. The new FX6002 retains this mechanical durability while at the same reducing the required film thickness, again reducing holistic project cost due to lower material requirements and greatly reduced site touch-up requirements.

For in-shop applicators of intumescent fire protection, FX6002 has Volatile Organic Content (VOC) levels comparable with many of today’s water based intumescent products, it also dries to leave a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish, worlds apart from that typically achieved with some other exterior durable products.

Additionally, when looking to optimise project costs, in many scenarios FX6002 may be specified with or without both primer and top coat depending on the project and applicator’s requirements. Rigorously fire tested under the requirements of British Standards BS476 parts 20 and 21, and the ASFP Yellow Book (Edition 5), FX6002 can offer up to 120 minutes fire protection to traditional rolled steel elements and cell beams. When coupled with the expertise of the Fire Engineering & Estimation Team in prescriptive and fire engineered solutions, and Sherwin-Williams’ independently accredited FDE software, FIRETEX FX6002 can be fully integrated into a project’s design model and BIM operations, offering customers a safe and cost-optimised fire protection solution.

FIRETEX FX6000 technology was recently applied to Whitechapel Station in London, bringing benefits in time and cost, and proving its worth for on-site application.

Step 2: Choose the relevant application process for the tank There are numerous procedures for grit-blasting and applying coatings in a cargo tank (Fig. 2).

The following four procedures represent the most commonly used, but may not be suitable for all linings.

The selection of the appropriate coating procedure will be influenced by: • the size (m2 area) of the tank to be coated; • the prevailing substrate temperatures (in relation to the minimum 2 and maximum overcoating intervals of the lining product(s) being applied); • the equipment and manpower the yard/contractor have available.

Step 3: Prepare the tank For new buildings after final tank testing, the tanks must be fresh water washed and dried, especially if they have been in contact with seawater.

All grease and oil must be removed from all surfaces and all hot work in the tank must be completed.

Furthermore: • heating coils (if fitted) should be masked; • all cargo lines should be fitted and tested; • cargo suction strums (if fitted) should be removed in order to give total access.

When conducting tank repairs, it is important to ensure that the tanks are clean and gas free.

Other factors to consider: • scale, debris and cargo residues must be removed from the tanks;

The latest revision of the lining’s Application Guidelines is a key document to be reviewed and particular attention should be paid to the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) of the products to be applied to ensure the operators are suitably protected from any potential hazards in the lining’s products.

• any damaged lining must be prepared back to a firm edge or completely removed; • any damage to the steel (e.g. pitting) may need to be rectified e.g. by welding and/or grinding.

• Surface Cleanliness – the cleanliness Standards ensure that the substrate is clean and ensure a good adhesion of the lining.

• Residual salt - If the surface salt contamination level is above the maximum that is permissible for the particular lining being used, further fresh water washing, blasting and cleaning will be required.

From the start of surface preparation to the final cure of the lining the environment in the tank should be maintained and monitored. Measurements should be taken in a variety of locations in a tank as factors such as the outside conditions may affect the environment in the tank such as direct sunlight on the outside of the tank raising the temperature of localised areas within the tank. Variables to monitor include: • Temperature Control – maximum and minimum air and steel substrate temperatures.

• Humidity Control – maximum and possibly minimum humidity levels.

• Ventilation Control – air change frequency and setup inside the tank to avoid dead spots.

Stripe coating is an essential part of good painting practice in cargo tanks. Typical areas where stripe coats should be applied include: • Backs of stiffeners • Cut outs i.e. scallops • Welds • Areas of difficult access (corners) • Ladders and hand rails

For optimum performance of cargo tank linings, close control of film thickness is essential. Over application may result in slow cure and solvent entrapment, whereas under application can lead to a poorly coalesced film and reduction in protection of the steel. Ensure strict adherence to the minimum and maximum thicknesses of both each coat and the overall scheme as stated in the Application Guidelines.

Once dry, the coating film thickness should be measured and rectified in accordance with the specification. The lining should also be checked for any holidays (non- continuous film) by either water testing or low voltage (wet-sponge) or high voltage (spark) testing as appropriate for the lining product/scheme applied (the lining manufacturer should be consulted). Any holidays identified should be addressed.

Some linings require a secondary heated post cure to achieve full cure and this should also be carried out according the manufacturer’s Application Guidelines and monitored to confirm that the required temperature has been achieved for the corresponding full period of cure.

By ensuring that all the above steps have been followed the chance of successful application of the chosen tank lining will be greatly increased and so it will be possible to deliver the performance and earning potential expected. ‹

Per una prestazione ottimale dei rivestimenti è essenziale un controllo rigoroso dello spessore del film. L’applicazione di una quantità eccessiva di prodotto potrebbe causare una cottura lenta e l’intrappolamento del solvente, mentre un’applicazione scarsa può causare insufficiente coalescenza del film e riduzione dell’effetto protettivo sull’acciaio. Alcuni rivestimenti richiedono un’ulteriore cottura con riscaldamento secondario e, anche questa, dovrà essere eseguita secondo le linee guida del produttore e monitorata, per poter stabilire se è stata raggiunta a mantenuta la temperatura richiesta per tutto l’intervallo di cottura.

emand for Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels is expected to increase as the search for new sources of oil and gas continues to move further afield and into marginal shallow water fields. This is according to the recently published 2018 Worldwide Survey of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Vessels. The report outlines that as of 1 July 2018, there were 16 FPSOs on order or under construction for delivery in 2019 and beyond. Half of these are contractor-owned for lease and the other half are operator-owned. The reported projections suggest a further 15 “strong candidates for project sanction” in 2019 and seven more in 2020.

These units provide far greater flexibility to the energy industry at a time when the appetite for investment in fixed assets remains muted in what

As an FPSO, the vessel must have a ten year or longer service life. While traditional trading vessels will dock regularly (or at a minimum of every five years), the FPSO will be in continuous operation.

Its’ protective coatings, therefore, must also last ten years.

Production facilities are mounted on raised supports above the vessel deck. Reservoir fluids pass from subsea production wells, via flowlines and risers, up into the turret and then to the production facilities. Produced oil is stored in the vessel cargo tanks and periodically offloaded onto a shuttle tanker via a loading hose. Generally speaking, the tank arrangement of a converted single hull tanker is usually of two side ballast tanks in the cargo tank area which provides sufficient ballast capacity for FPSO operation. Tailoring a coating scheme based on the requirements of each area is vital.

While the hull structure of tankers is not changed during conversion to FPSO, the steel structures once converted are subjected to very different – and often harsher – environmental conditions. Many of the FPSOs currently on deployment sit in shallow waters along the Gulf of Mexico, offshore West Africa and in the North Sea. These climates differ significantly and pose unique risks which must be guarded against with a specifically designed coatings package.

One constant, however, is the harsh impact of fouling and corrosive elements these hulls will face as FPSOs, as biofouling multiplies much faster on static structures. Effective fouling protection and prevention is therefore a key requirement for the submerged areas. What’s more, for the external hull surface above the waterline, the coating must have a high resistance to UV. Then there’s the ballast and storage tanks, which also require different coatings systems.

I liquidi del serbatoio passano dai pozzi di estrazione sottomarini, attraverso le flowline ed i montanti, fino alla torretta e quindi agli impianti di produzione. Il petrolio prodotto viene stoccato nelle cisterne di carico della nave e scaricato periodicamente su uno shuttle cisterna tramite un tubo di carico. In generale, la composizione del serbatoio di una nave cisterna monoscafo convertita è solitamente di due cisterne di zavorra laterali nella zona del serbatoio di carico che fornisce una capacità di zavorra sufficiente per il funzionamento della FPSO. Personalizzare un sistema verniciante basato sulle caratteristiche di ciascuna area risulta vitale.

Mentre la struttura dello scafo della nave cisterna non viene modificata durante la conversione in FPSO, le strutture in acciaio, una volta convertite, sono soggette a condizioni ambientali molto diverse e spesso più severe. Molte delle FPSO attualmente in funzione si trovano in acque poco profonde lungo il Golfo del Messico, al largo dell’Africa occidentale e nel Mare del Nord. Questi climi differiscono in modo significativo e presentano rischi particolari da cui bisogna proteggersi con un pacchetto di rivestimenti appositamente studiato.

Whether below the waterline applied to the external hull or turret moonpool, or applied to topsides structures, equipment and decks; the key to any coating system’s success begins with a strong primer that is also versatile and compatible with a wide range of subsequent coats.

Global coatings manufacturer Hempel’s Hempadur Quattro XO 17720 is a versatile non-zinc universal primer which is used extensively for hull and ballast tank protection on FPSOs. With the ability to cure down to -10°C / 14°F for handling in even the most extreme fabrication locations, it is also now NORSOK M-501 pre-qualified (the gold-standard for certifying offshore production units).

It is available in aluminium variants to meet common industry specifications, as well as fibre reinforced grades to offer greater crack resistance and more tolerance to application over-thickness.

Hempadur Avantguard 750, another commonly used coating for FPSOs, is part of Hempel’s Avantguard range of activated zinc primers.

Using novel activated zinc technology this range delivers best in class resistance to corrosion creep and performance under a wider range of corrosive categories, including CX. Extensively pre-qualified and tested to such standards as NORSOK M-501 and the new ISO 12944-9 : 2018 (previously ISO 20340) these products offer customers peace of mind and superior corrosion performance to non-zinc alternatives. They are fast drying and allow rapid overcoating to speed up the installation process.

Whilst the external part of any floating offshore facility is the part that most people are familiar with, the internal tanks and void spaces represent the largest coated surface area, but also the biggest challenges to correct when things go wrong.

As a universal primer, Hempadur Quattro XO 17720 can deliver storage tank corrosion protection and ballast tank protection.

The chemical composition protects against the harsh corrosive environments found in sea water ballast tanks and cargo oil tanks. Approved to IMO MSC.215 for use in seawater ballast tanks and IMO MSC.288 for cargo oil tanks it is also approved by a wide range of classification societies worldwide. Fast recoating aids in coating productivity and construction flexibility.

At higher temperatures different solutions may be called for. Hempadur 15600 is designed to work at cargo oil tank temperatures (suitable for use up to 90°C) where conventional universal primers may not provide sufficient protection, but with easier application properties. It also delivers greater resistance to cracking than other high temperature alternatives such as epoxy phenolic systems and meets IMO MSC.288 requirements.

by Confindustria Bergamo and Ente Fiera Promoberg. The international event returns to the scene as an asset for the promotion of the territory, supporting the excellence of national industrial production with an event that, thanks to the wide turnout expected, gathers around itself increasingly important numbers.

After the successes of the first two editions, which saw an influx of 3500 visitors in 2015 and about 8000 in 2017, Industrial Valve Summit returns as a promoter of the Made in Italy, creating a system of associative values outcome of the territory and unique technical skills in the world. The exhibition area will welcome more than 250 exhibitors covering an area of 10,000 square meters and this time around 10,000 visitors are expected from over 5 continents and over 60 countries worldwide.

The Oil & Gas valve segment has a value, for the Italian market, higher than that of other major European companies, such as the German, English and French ones, confirming its position as a leader in the sector. These numbers are reported by the research that Industrial Valve Summit commissioned to Prometeia - a leading company in the studies for institutional investors - on the Oil & Gas valves: the data showed that the value of the reference market is around 3.3 billion euros, with a total of about 11,000 employees divided among over 300 companies. The Made in Italy is therefore confirmed as leader with 31% of the total on European production, followed by Germany (26%), United Kingdom (13%) and France (11%).

The Italian manufacturers of industrial valves and flow control solutions for Oil & Gas are at the forefront of the national mechanical manufacturing landscape thanks to the high technological added value and the numerous investments in research and development. The strong export vocation, which represents about 90% of the turnover of the sector, is balanced by a deep-rooted presence on the territory, in particular the Bergamo area, where more than 90% of Italian production is located within a radius of 100 km. A supply chain and a concentration of skills within a few kilometers that is unparalleled in the world and that is comparable only to what we can find in the city of Suzhou, near Shanghai in China.

IVS 2019 presents itself not only as a trade fair event, a meeting place for suppliers and specialists in the sector, but also as a training hub. In fact, for the first time, training courses and seminars will be completely free for all those present at the Summit. The educational activities of the event are organized by Valve Campus, an association of companies producing valves and components in the sector, which, in close collaboration with IVS, has created a knowledge platform to allow the sharing of information, readings and articles with purpose of consolidating industry knowledge.
