COR-TEN® STEEL IN HIGHLY CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENTS: COATING SOLUTIONS FOR A LONGER SERVICE LIFE L’acciaio COR-TEN® in ambienti altamente corrosivi: soluzioni di pitturazione per allungarne la vita

empel, a multinational company active in the corrosion (protective), maritime, yacht, construction and container fields, presents itself as an internationally recognised leader for the quality of its coatings as well as for its technical assistance service, which makes it a point of reference for a varied and demanding customer base, from engineering companies to applicators. With almost a century of experience in the corrosion field, Hempel is present in almost all of the international specifications of the oil & gas, energy and infrastructure sectors. The stated objective of the company is total customer satisfaction, which involves the long-term protection of his assets. The 1995 data show a loss of US GDP by 4.2% per year due to phenomena related to corrosion. Even stainless steel, under certain conditions, such as high chloride atmospheres (coastal and offshore environments classified as C5-M), may experience a corrosive degradation and must therefore be protected by an anti-corrosion coating. COR-TEN® steel makes no exception to this. In the United States, between 1960 and 1980, about 2,000 bridges were built in weathering steel. Over time, they have shown obvious problems related to corrosion: Without any intervention, their life expectancy would have been considerably reduced (source: Frosio Corrosion Protection Book, 2003). As a consequence, it is increasingly frequent that a customer requires to protect COR-TEN® steel objects by means of a coating system with the aim of further prolong their service life. For the purposes of anti-corrosion coating, COR-TEN® steel is similar to carbon steel: it is therefore possible to think

Con un’esperienza quasi centenaria nel settore Protective, Hempel è presente nella quasi totalità delle specifiche internazionali dei segmenti Oil&Gas, Energia e Infrastrutture. L’obiettivo dichiarato dell’azienda è la soddisfazione totale del cliente, che passa per la protezione a lungo termine dei suoi investimenti. I dati del 1995 parlano, infatti, di una perdita del 4,2% annuo del PIL statunitense per fenomeni legati alla corrosione. Anche l’acciaio inossidabile, alla presenza di determinate condizioni, quale ad esempio il servizio in atmosfere a elevato tasso di cloruri - ambienti costieri e off-shore classificabili come C5-M - può subire una degradazione corrosiva che ne richiede la protezione mediante pitture anticorrosive. Non sfugge a questa logica anche l’acciaio COR-TEN®. Negli Stati Uniti, tra il 1960 ed il 1980, sono stati costruiti circa 2.000 ponti in acciaio autopassivante che nel tempo hanno mostrato evidenti problemi legati alla corrosione: senza alcun intervento, la loro aspettativa di vita si sarebbe considerevolmente ridotta (Fonte: Frosio Corrosion Protection Book, 2003). Sono dunque sempre più frequenti le committenze che richiedono di proteggere i manufatti in COR-TEN® mediante un sistema di pitturazione con l’obiettivo di prolungarne ulteriormente la vita. Ai fini della pitturazione anticorrosiva, l’acciaio COR-TEN® è assimilabile a un acciaio al carbonio: è possibile dunque ragionare in termini di aggressività ambientale e durabilità secondo le indica-
