Independent Presbyterian Church
Easter Sunday
APRIL 5, 2026 | 8:00 A.M., 9:30 A.M., AND 11:00 A.M.
Founded in 1915 , Independent Presbyterian Church has long held a commitment to glorifying the triune God through worship, the use of beauty and the arts, and serving our community in Jesus’ name. From the beginning, our founders sought to establish a church reflecting God’s love for humanity and humanity’s love for God.
Today, we continue this legacy by cultivating meaningful worship, nurturing our congregation to grow as disciples of Jesus, and engaging in acts of service that reflect Christ’s command to love God and love our neighbors. Whether you are a life-long follower of Jesus, a new believer, or still curious, know that all are welcome here.
We welcome members and visitors to this celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As we worship with joy and thanksgiving, may we sense the presence of the risen Christ and the transformational power of the Holy Spirit.
If you are visiting with us, we hope you will return again soon and find in this church family a spiritual home and refuge. Our good news and proclamation today and always is: Jesus Christ is risen, and he is Lord! To learn more about IPC or membership, please contact Stacy Pulliam at spulliam@ipc-usa.org.
The trumpet and timpani music for today’s Easter services has been funded by a gift to the Music Department to the glory of God and in loving memory of O. Z. Hall.
At the conclusion of the 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. services, the congregation is requested to leave promptly to facilitate preparation for the next service.
There are no Sunday school classe s today for adults, youth, or children. Children kindergarten age and younger may follow the acolyte down the center aisle to the Ground Floor for childcare during the morning services.
Church offices are closed tomorrow in observance of Easter Monday.
THE COVER features an artistic rendering inspired by the Resurrection (Easter) Window found in the West Transept balcony.
We gather as a Family of Faith and prepare our hearts to worship God.
PRAYER OF PREPARATION
O mighty God, lead us into the experience of triumphing over death. Let us walk humbly and majestically, fearing nothing. May we begin our immortal lives now. Grant that sinking ourselves in Christ we may win His victory in all things. Amen. from “Beginning the Day” by Henry Edmonds
PRELUDE
“Concerto for Two Trumpets” Francesco Manfredini
The service of worship begins with the music of the organ. Through its power and brilliance may you feel the majesty and glory of God; in its quietness, His peace.

Almighty God, in the resurrection of Jesus Christ you have shattered the power of sin and death. We confess that we do not always believe in this hope and remain captive to doubt and fear. Forgive our dread of loss, our despair, and our anxiety about the future. Set us free for the joy of Christ who was dead but now lives, that we too might find new life in service of his kingdom. In the risen Savior’s name we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON
Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
Matthew 28:1-17
Pew Bible, N.T. pg. 26
“Sing Ye to the Lord” Edward C. Bairstow Sing ye to the Lord, for He hath triumph’d gloriously. Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath He cast into the sea. Mighty victim from the sky, Hell’s fierce pow’rs beneath Thee lie; Thou hast conquer’d in the fight, Thou hast brought us life and light. Now no more can death appal, now no more the grave enthral, Thou hast open’d Paradise, and in Thee, Thy Saints shall rise. Alleluia, Amen.
Exodus 15, adapt. Robert Campbell
During the singing of this anthem, children kindergarten age and younger may follow the acolyte down the center aisle to the Ground Floor for childcare.
SERMON
“The Birth of Hope”
We respond to the hearing of God’s word through reflection, prayer, and offering.
Rev. Long
HYMN
“The Day of Resurrection!” LANCASHIRE
The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad, The Passover of gladness, the Passover of God. From death to life eternal, from sin’s dominion free, Our Christ has brought us over with hymns of victory.
Let hearts be purged of evil that we may see aright The Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light, And listening to his accents, may hear, so calm and plain, His own “All hail!” and hearing, may raise the victor strain.
Now let the heavens be joyful; let earth its song begin; The round world keep high triumph and all that is therein. Let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, For Christ the Lord has risen, our joy that has no end.
APOSTLES’ CREED
Rev. Clayton
I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven; and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

“The Old Hundredth Psalm Tune”
People and Choir: All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice.
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are His folk, he doth us feed, And for His sheep he doth us take.
Choir:
People and Choir:
O enter then his gates with praise; Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his Name always, For it is seemly so to do.
For why? the Lord our God is good; His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
THE PRAYER OF DEDICATION
THE OFFERTORY ANTHEM
“Easter” from Five Mystical Songs
Willian Periera da Silva, baritone
arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Rise heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise Without delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him may’st rise; That, as his death calcined thee to dust, His life may make thee gold, and much more, Just. Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part With all thy art. The cross taught all wood to resound his name Who bore the same. His stretched sinews taught all strings, what key Is best to celebrate this most high day. Consort both heart and lute, and twist a song Pleasant and long: Or since all music is but three parts vied, And multiplied; O let thy blessed Spirit bear a part, And make up our defects with his sweet art.
George Herbert
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER
Rev. Seamon OUR FATHER, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done; On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts; As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; deliver us from evil; For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
We are sent out into the world to love God and our neighbors.
HYMN
“Thine
Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, Kept the folded graveclothes where thy body lay.
Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.
Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, For the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting. Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.
No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life! Life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife. Make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above.
Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.
BENEDICTION
BENEDICTION RESPONSE
“Hallelujah” from Messiah G. F. Handel
Hallelujah: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
Revelation 19:6, 11:15, 19:16
POSTLUDE
The lilies with which the church is made beautiful today are, as they stand, symbols of the immortal life. As these flowers have sunk from sight and then at the bidding of their inner life sprung again into beauty and fragrance, so we believe the souls of men survive the winter of death and live once again. (Written by Dr. Henry M. Edmonds, 1938.) Below are names of some of our loved ones for whom the lilies were given to the glory of God and in loving memory.
