“… a serious and resourceful podium personality.” — Daniel Cariaga, Los Angeles Times

“… He elicits great dynamic from the orchestra…altogether, all the participants honor and wait anxiously for the conductor’s wishes… predominant excitement brought out by Schmieder.” — Eberhard Iro, Review on Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Landshuter Rathausprunksaal

“… The virtues of Mr. Schmieder as a sensitive and true musician inspired the players to create a very deep and emotional interpretation which kind of magnetized all its sensual harmonies and well phrased performance. This was a concert which could be titled as “pearls of music” from any point.” – Ora Binur, Ma’ariv Jerusalem Daily

(1980) “… Eduard Schmieder, the founder of the admirable iPalpiti, believes that music remains a functional universal language… Schmieder is an authoritative conductor. A tall and serious Russian of the old school, he goes in for intense expression and dug-in string sonorities…” — Los Angeles Times, Mark Swed, Chief Music Critic (2010)

Born and educated in Russia, Eduard Schmieder has been characterized as an “extraordinary musician of the late 20th century” (Henry Roth). As artist and teacher, Schmieder seeks to preserve and enhance the great traditions of American and European art. He maintains a concert schedule as conductor and violinist and teaches an internationally selected class of students. Schmieder has performed in such prestigious halls as Cite de la Musique in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Crown Hall in Jerusalem, Grand Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and other major concert halls worldwide. He has collaborated with such musicians as Yehudi Menuhin, Ida Haendel, Martha Argerich, Brooks Smith, Nathaniel Rosen, Jon Kimura-Parker, Erick Friedman, Maria Kligel, Atar Arad, John Perry, Dame Diana Andersen, Fou Ts’ong, Lynn Harrell, and many others. He was a founding member and artistic director of the Venice International Violin Institute and the Moscow Trio. In 1996, Eduard Schmieder performed a recital in Genoa on Paganini’s famous Guarneri del Gesu “Il Cannone” violin which is only given for the performances to exceptional virtuoso violinists. On this rare occasion, it was a posthumous International Peace Prize ceremony given by the Italian government to Yitzhak Rabin. One of the most highly regarded violin pedagogues of his generation, Eduard Schmieder is the L. H. Carnell Distinguished Professor and Artistic Director for Strings at Temple University in Philadelphia. Prior to his appointment at Temple University, he held the Distinguished Algur H. Meadows Chair of Violin and Chamber Music in the Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas (1990-2006), and a tenured Professor of the Violin at the University of Southern California, the position formerly held by Jascha Heifetz. Students of Professor Schmieder are winners of top prizes at the most prestigious international competitions, have established careers as soloists, chamber musicians, and hold leading positions in orchestras in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He is a recipient of American Cultural Specialist Award from United States Information Agency (1999), and throughout the years received numerous awards for his accomplishments as a Musician and Teacher and recognition for his invaluable contributions to culture. In 2020 he was honored with a prestigious Great Teacher Award, given annually to 1-3 university professors across all disciplines. Schmieder has taught master classes in virtually every foremost conservatory in the world. He has been performing, teaching, and conducting at international music festivals in Canada, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands, and other countries. In the United States he has worked in music festivals at Aspen, Interlochen, Musicorda, Idyllwild, and Summit in New York. Since 2004, he is a member of the faculty at the Mozarteum Summer Academie Salzburg. He frequently represents the United States as a jury member at leading international competitions including the Queen Elisabeth, Sibelius, Paganini, Sarasate, Lipizer, and ARD. In 2003, he was invited and accepted the position as Artistic Advisor to the Sarasate International Violin Competition in Spain. He is also an Artistic Advisor to the Foundation “Remember Enescu” in Romania. He has been written about in books by Henry Roth “Violin Virtuosos: From Paganini to 21st Century” and Margaret Campbell “The Great Violinists,” as well as three featured articles in The Strad magazine. www.EduardSchmieder.com

Acclaimed by the press for its “beauteous string playing,” “lustrous, polished tone,” and “vocal quality,” iPalpiti (ee-PAHL-pit-ee is Italian for “heartbeats”) is a consortium of prize-winning young professional musicians from around the globe, where each member is considered a soloist. “Eduard Schmieder, the founder of the admirable iPalpiti, is a serious and resourceful podium personality...he goes in for intense expression and dug-in string sonorities…” — Los Angeles Times

Under his direction, iPalpiti has performed to sold-out audiences in prestigious venues such as Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Mozarteum Grosse Hall (Salzburg), Nikkei Hall (Tokyo), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), YMCA (Jerusalem), Carnegie Zankel Hall (New York), and has been invited as ensemble-in-residence at festivals in Slovenia, Israel, Carinthia, Belgium, and Italy, as well as the Martha Argerich Festival in Beppu, Japan. Founded by Eduard Schmieder in 1991, iPalpiti has since grown to an ensemble of international recognition, establishing a summer residency in Beverly Hills, California in 1999. iPalpiti Festival of International Laureates in Los Angeles — presented annually since 1998 — is one of the nation’s significant music festivals and the subject of international accolades. The prestigious STRAD magazine devoted numerous enthusiastic features and reviews, and the Los Angeles Times acclaimed the Festival’s “takeyour-breath-away demonstrations of musicianship and technique,” where artists are encouraged to find their “own voice,” performing as iPalpiti Soloists in solo and chamber ensemble concerts. Referred to as a “Musical Peace Corps,” iPalpiti has created an international cultural network of hundreds of classical artists, forging lifetime associations and friendships that transcend the conflicts of our time. The orchestra’s players (ages 19 - 32) are all winners of prestigious international awards and represent countries worldwide. iPalpiti alumni have established solo and chamber ensemble careers and have taken up leading positions in major international orchestras such as the Chicago, Tokyo, Jerusalem, Monte Carlo, Bavarian State and Munich Symphonies, London, Berlin and Israel Philharmonics, Dresden Staatskapelle, etc. Several have exclusive recordings with labels like Decca, Telarc, and Supraphon records, and are considered among the premier musicians of their generation. iPalpiti’s performances have been acclaimed by critics throughout the world. In 1996 Noord Holland Dagblad proclaimed “[iPalpiti’s] performance can be called righteously overwhelming.” John Ardoin of the Dallas Morning News raved “iPalpiti sprang to life as a single, singing voice. It was the natural, ‘vocal’ quality that stayed with me long after the final notes of the concert were sounded,” while the Los Angeles Times hailed the group’s performances as “an astounding demonstration of seamless and beauteous string playing…memorable, luminous, deeply moving performance” (Daniel Cariaga, 2000) and as a “cool display of virtuosity…unified to an often startling degree” (2006). The New York Times noted that “…ensemble was particularly noteworthy for its unity of purpose and blend. It was as if the musicians’ hearts were beating to the same buoyant rhythm… lustrous, polished tone and graceful phrasing.” (2007) iPalpiti has produced 24 CDs released on TELOS, YAI/iPalpiti and BCM+D Records. Performances are broadcast by Classic Arts Showcase nationally to over 62 million viewers on PBS/Art Channel and other public television channels, in Philadelphia on WRTI, New York on WQXR-FM.

iPalpiti is represented worldwide by iPalpiti Artists International. www.ipalpiti.org

“The orchestra with such musicians is notable for the richness of colors; it is a great pleasure to listen to range of expression... The Festival provides [participating] young musicians with unique possibilities for the creative growth and artistic improvement. In my opinion, implementation of this outstanding international forum requires not only very through organization but also ultimate artistry... Thank you!!!” – Mark Kopytman, composer, Israel

The annual iPalpiti Festival of International Laureates has become a truly outstanding institution that for 22 years promotes musical excellence, cultural and international exchange.

It is very remarkable that the festival manages to offer a big part of its performances free to the public and is reaching out underprivileged communities and groups, underlining its humanitarian driving force under the direction of Maestro Eduard Schmieder.

We are proud to see, again violinist Peter Rainer representing Germany. We wish him personally and the festival best of success.

“I had the opportunity to get invited the first time to iPalpiti on the year 2015. I knew nobody from the festival but from the first minute I arrived I could feel this friendly ambience and we were already friends! It was a wonderful experience rich of music making, concerts and friendships. Maestro Schmieder is full of inspiration and a deep musician, it’s such an honor to be coach and conducted by him. All this together makes a lovely family which I’m part of it and will be. Of course we are living around the world but we get in touch all the time and we are all very impatient to meet and play together every summer! “Special Memento”: when I met Pamela Anderson at the breakfast next to the swimming pool on the rooftop of the Petit Ermitage hotel where iPalpiti stays during festivals; and of course last year, with my trio, when we were part of the program as soloists and performing at the Walt Disney Hall, it was such a blast!!!”

It has been heartbreaking to see the world close down this year - especially the music halls of the world, but absence only makes the heart grow fonder. Wishing all my best to our audiences, supporters, and most of all, our Maestro; and hoping that before too long, we can soon frolic again with Bohm’s perpetual motion side-by-side.” – April 2020

AZER DAMIROV / AZERBAIJAN

Violinist

“In 2008, when I received a prize at the International Postacchini Violin Competition in Italy, and was completing my studies in Moscow, I was honored to also receive an iPalpiti prize to participate in its Festival of International Laureates, to join incredible iPalpiti ensemble and perform concerts at several prestigious venues. The day of arrival in LA was totally overwhelming for me. Having grown up in the different country, USA was a cultural shock. However, meeting all this wonderful musicians from all over the world, organizers, everyone who was involved in iPalpiti, and the amiable atmosphere they had created, made me feel at home. Joining this great festival was a turning point in my life as it did impact the course of my musical future. I was fortunate to meet Eduard Schmieder, the founder and music director of iPalpiti orchestra, and continue my musical journey by studying with him in Philadelphia. Since I joined iPalpiti in 2009, Maestro Schmieder, Laura Schmieder, the executive director of the festival, and the iPalpiti orchestra members became my family. Special thanks to the benefactors of this festival for their generous support and genuine interest in music. Without them all this would not be possible. Due to pandemic crisis for the last months all of us are dealing with unprecedented challenges not only globally but also on a personal level. Every year old and new members of iPalpiti reunite to make music, however, unfortunately this year we are confined to our homes and will miss seeing and hugging each other. We will miss strolling around the gorgeous LA and enjoying delicious food. It is very sad to see what a challenging test our iPalpiti has to go through. But light always overcomes darkness and I hope that this crisis will end soon, so we can get back together and heal our souls with live music again.” – May 2020

“Dear iPalpiti Audience, I am very sad that we will not be able to meet this summer again. I joined this elite group of musicians last summer and I have absolutely amazing memories from our last tour. This is such a limited and special group of musicians, wonderful opportunity to share music and stage with such a great people. It is such an honor and pleasure to work with Maestro Schmieder which with his knowledge, passion, love for music and energy makes this festival so exceptional. All I want to say is, that last iPalpiti tour had huge impact on my life, taught me a lot, I made unique friendships and gained so much experience, especially that I was the youngest member of the group. In the same time I had so much fun! I want to wish everyone health and patience during this difficult period, I hope music will play in your hearts. In the meantime I keep working, practicing and planning performances. I am absolutely aiming for remaining a soloist till the very end and iPalpiti is one of those things in life that keep me going in the right direction.” – June 2020

SAMUEL NEBYU / HUNGARY

Violinist

“I have been a member of iPalpiti since 2015, starting as iPalpiti Junior featured soloist in Waxman’ Carmen Fantasy at the Wallis Annenberg Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills. Since, making great music with Professor Schmieder and the members of iPalpiti is something I am always looking forward in my concert schedule. I was fortunate to be invited again as a featured soloist at Walt Disney Hall in 2017, performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with iPalpiti alumnus, renowned violist Juan-Miguel Hernandez, and I was also part of the ensemble’s fantastic and memorable tours to Salzburg and to Israel where we performed in the most prestigious concert halls all across this amazing country. Not only because the level of every player is exceptional, but because this festival is a “family gathering” where we come together from all parts of the world for 2-3 weeks and enjoy music making together. Maestro Schmieder inspires each of us with his incredible passion for music during rehearsals and concerts, and the music that the audiences get to experience during the concert is phenomenal. An excellence, love for music, and human understanding towards each other is the best way I can describe iPalpiti.” – May 2020

“I took part of the iPalpiti Festival for the first time last summer (2019). I came with my Piano Trio, Trio Zadig. Our violinist, Boris Borgolotto, was already an iPalpiti member and recommended us to participate. It was for him a great memory of Friendship and great Music shared by a group of excellent people and under the leadership of an incredible and very inspiring musician, Maestro Schmieder. I have to say that my experience was above my expectations. I Loved to have the opportunity to meet and play with such musicians from so many countries, the public of the solo performances in Encinitas was incredibly supportive and the last concert as soloist with the orchestra in Walt Disney Hall was for me one on the highlights of my musician’s life. We were supposed to play the Beethoven Triple Concerto this summer and I will really miss this opportunity to play again in this beautiful hall with Maestro Schmieder. I’m very much looking forward to have the opportunity to come back to California. ” – June 2020

IAN BARBER / USA-FRANCE

Pianist

“It was my first experience coming to iPalpiti last summer and it was definitely one of my favorite festivals that I’ve participated in. As the pianist of Trio Zadig, I performed of course with the trio and it was quite an honor to play together as soloists in venues such as Greystone mansion and at Walt Disney Hall, but beyond that, I truly enjoyed working and playing with the many other soloists invited to iPalpiti who were all extraordinary musicians and wonderful human beings. I think the energy that Dr Schmieder and Mrs Schmieder bring to the festival is really special and creates this environment that attracts such quality and great performances. I’m very much looking forward to seeing everyone again as soon as possible and getting back to playing music!”

Ian Barber started studying piano at age seven in Colorado with Patricia Chen, continuing with Larry Graham and Rodney Mobley in high school. He has also worked with several prestigious teachers including Jullian Martin and Yoheved Kaplinsky from the Juilliard School of Music, Emilio del Rosario from the Music Institute of Chicago and French pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Jean-Claude Pennetier. Winner of several national competitions, he was twice chosen to serve a two-year term on the Young Musicians Foundation Roster. After winning Yamaha Piano Competition in 2004, he was selected to perform with the National Repertory Orchestra in the Breckenridge Music Festival, and the following year, as a winner of the Denver/Steinway Piano Competition, he was the soloist with the Colorado Symphony and reinvited to perform with the National Repertory Orchestra playing Rachmaninoff’s 2nd piano concerto. In 2008 he won Indiana University’s concerto competition and performed Brahms 2nd piano concerto with the University Symphony Orchestra. With French violinist and cellist Boris Borgolotto and Marc Girard Garcia, Ian founded the Zadig Trio. Since its creation in 2014, the Trio has won 11 international prizes in France, the USA, Austria and Italy, and is regularly invited to play in great halls worldwide. The Zadig Trio is currently a resident of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, under the tutelage of Artemis Quartet. The Trio’s first album, called “Something in Between”, was released in March 2019. TRIO ZADIG / FRANCE

Boris Borgolotto, violinist. Marc Girard Garcia, cellist. Ian Barber, pianist Festival’s ensemble-in-residence.

“As a trio, it has been one of the highlights of our career to come to California from Paris to participate in iPalpiti last summer. The artistic and virtuosic quality of all the individuals who participate is outstanding and it was an honor to perform alongside them and under the baton of Dr. Schmieder. We were so looking forward to performing the Beethoven triple concerto at Walt Disney Concert hall this year with everyone again and it’s been difficult to accept that this will not be possible. As so many festivals and concerts are canceled, we realize what a privilege it is to be able to perform the music that we love and share it with a live audience. The concerts we played at iPalpiti last year – in Encinitas, at Greystone, at Walt Disney Hall – rest in our memory as part of the most special occasions making music. We will miss the collaborations with excellent musicians, the friendships, and also the warm and engaged public. We take solace in the fact that this will all pass eventually, and can’t wait to see everyone then!”

Founded in 2014, Trio Zadig gained critical praise for their impressive 11 international competition prizes, including First Prize at the Fnapec Competition and second prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in the US. The Zadig Trio is currently a resident of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel alongside the Artemis Quartet. It is also the first trio resident of ProQuartet and is supported by the Banque Populaire Foundation. Friendship is at the core of the Zadig Trio’s strength and authenticity. Boris Borgolotto and Marc Girard Garcia are childhood friends who studied together at the Paris Conservatoire National de Musique and at the University of Music in Vienna. Upon their return to France, they crossed paths with Ian Barber, an American pianist from the renowned studio of André Watts at the University of Indiana. The chemistry between them is immediately apparent; in a strong desire to unite their talents, they found the Zadig Trio. The name comes from Voltaire’s eponymous character, Zadig (from the Hebrew for the ‘just’ and the Arabic for the ‘truthful’). Much like the music that the Trio performs, the story of Zadig is fantastically entertaining, while touching upon universal and uncompromising truths about the nature of reality. Trio has performed all over the world, from the USA to the Republic of Congo, as well as in prestigious halls like Wigmore Hall, Shanghai City Theater, Paris’ Philharmonic and the Salle Cortot. In parallel with this demanding schedule, the Trio has met with great artists who have contributed to the development of its musical expression, most notably Ivry Gitlis and Menahem Pressler. Due to its auspicious beginning, the Zadig Trio has been invited to several broadcast shows: “Génération Jeunes Interprètes” and “Le nouveau Rendez-Vous” on French Public Radio (France Musique) as well as “Puisque vous avez du talent” on Musiq’3 (RTBF) in Belgium. From Haydn to contemporary composers, the Zadig Trio’s audacity and freshness gives youth and vitality to the piano trio repertoire. The depth and sincerity of their interpretations, as well as their vivid, poetic sound, make them the creators of captivating performances. Their DC debut at the Phillips will include Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor, Bernstein’s Fantasy on themes from West Side Story, and some works from Toulouse-born composer, Benjamin Attahir. Just like Voltaire’s hero, the Trio promises to have a long and adventurous life. Trio’s violinist Boris Borgolotto was selected for the Festival 2015 and we welcome his return to iPalpiti with his trio.
