As we acknowledge and celebrate our 16th year anniversary as an independent school in Kapolei, Hawaiʻi, and as we reflect upon the 2020-21 school year, it was probably one of the most challenging years in the legacy of our school. The challenges and uncertainty that the COVID-19 pandemic infringed upon our world and our school community truly challenged our sense of resilience and commitment to our school community. I sincerely believe that Island Pacific Academy “weathered the storm” and persevered through the many challenges because of our core values of, the power of human kindness, generosity of spirit, having a growth mindset, being solution-oriented and having a sense of ingenuity.
Who would have thought that the pandemic would extend for another year? Yet, here we are continuing to navigate through the changes precipitated by COVID-19. In the true spirit of Island Pacific Academy’s core values and mission the leadership, faculty, staff and especially the students have weathered the multitude of challenges successfully.
Central to these core values is the perspective of “change.” We believe and will continue to believe that change is inevitable, but it is constant, and so are values. At Island Pacific Academy, values matter, especially during these ever-changing and uncertain times. IPA inspires and enables our students to be Navigators of change and to go forward with confidence to become caring, contributing citizens who can succeed in an ever-changing world. It is with great honor, humility and gratitude that I share with you Island Pacific Academy’s 2020-21 Annual Report. Although we concluded the school year in the midst of a global pandemic, we persevered and the fiscal year continued to be one of positive growth and productivity for our school. It is because of our alumni, students, families, and friends that Island Pacific Academy grows stronger as an independent school to educate and support our school community.
Through the implementation of many 21st century skill sets such as resiliency; social-emotional competencies, problemsolving, empathy and teamwork, our school community has done a wonderful job in addressing the stress, anxiety and adversity during this pandemic. The Board of Trustees at IPA are proud of the way our entire community has successfully navigated through this pandemic. As we endeavor to return to some type of normalcy, we are ready to focus on the exciting opportunities in the curriculum with the inclusion of the Design Thinking Framework. This innovative and creative framework aligns with our mission and vision. The Board of Trustees fully supports this transition to teaching and learning. What an amazing opportunity for our students as we prepare them for their future in an ever changing global society! Island Pacific Academy continues to maintain its enrollment level due in large part to the generous and caring support from parents, families, faculty and staff and administrators. Island Pacific Academy is truly more than a place of teaching and learning. It is a family unit bonded in a place where “values matter”. It is a blessing to be part of this premier choice for K-12 education in West Oʻahu.

AN UNFORGETTABLE YEAR
Navigating Change Charting a Course for Student Success
The 2020-2021 academic year at Island Pacific Academy was defined by the collective effort of faculty, staff, administration, students, and families to navigate the endlessly changing currents of a year like no other. Island Pacific Academy’s core values – recognition of the power of human kindness, generosity of spirit, respect for each individual – define our culture and community, and never have they been more important than they were this year. Navigating through uncharted waters, the IPA community came together, responding creatively and emphatically, rethinking and reimagining, tacking and adapting to the novel challenges we faced beginning a new school year in the midst of a global pandemic. Although the student body was physically separated by the option of distance learning, we all came together in many meaningful ways to create many moments of success, discovery, and growth. The Facilities team spent the summer preparing our campus to implement the new health and safety requirements. They posted signage, installed hand sanitizer stations, and modified classrooms to allow social distancing. They facilitated the upgrade of the HVAC system with a new filtration system. They also oversaw the installation of a large event tent in the parking lot to create outdoor classroom space for the students. IPA faculty built on the distance learning curriculum they had to hurriedly implement at the end of the previous academic year, and fully embraced
the new technologies required for synchronous distance learning to develop a robust and engaging academic experience for all their students, whether on-campus or off. And most importantly, they found ways to continue to foster the close and caring relationships that are the mainstay of our community, where our students come first in all we do. We continued to strengthen our culture of community through Make a Difference Day, projects with ‘Ilima at Leihano, and the reimagination of our annual gala into “Plate It Forward” in support of our local restaurants and The Pantry, serving families in Hawaiʻi experiencing food insecurity. IPA’s Navigator alumni adjusted their sails in response to changing winds, with some returning home, some seeking to help their communities, and everyone making course adjustments as the path of their journey was suddenly disrupted. Navigating together, our resilient IPA community flourished in unexpected and meaningful ways. In this annual report, you will find stories of our successes, discovery, and growth during the 20202021 Island Pacific Academy school year.

In 2020-2021, Island Pacific Academy established its first endowment scholarship through a generous $50,000 gift from Board of Trustees Emeritus and past president Lance Wilhelm and his wife, Marcy. The Hisako Wilhelm Endowed Scholarship honors Wilhelm’s late mother, a single-mother who made providing a top-notch education for her three children the highest priority. The scholarship will be available for students from single-parent households who qualify both academically and financially. “Our daughter got an exemplary education at IPA and thrived in a supportive community. Scholarships through the endowment will help alleviate some of the financial burden often associated with a private school education.”

Navigators Class of 2021
The students of the Class of 2021 submitted more than 308 applications to 149 colleges around the world. 100% of the students who applied to college were accepted, and they will be matriculating to colleges and universities in 11 states and Japan. They will be pursuing degrees in architecture, biology, business, chemical engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, dance, finance, kinesiology, mechanical engineering, music, nursing, and psychology at top universities in the nation, including UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Davis, University of San Francisco, and Boston University. Island Pacific Academy’s Class of 2021 was awarded nearly $8.3 million in academic scholarships and awards. Nearly 80% of the seniors received an average of $223,000 in scholarships.

SHIFTING WINDS
Changing Tack IPA’s Pivot to Distance Learning
Island Pacific Academy came together to adapt rapidly and efficiently at a critical time as we pivoted to distance learning. The successful transition to a new mode of teaching and learning was buoyed by the expertise of our faculty and staff, and the trust and support of our students and families. For Island Pacific Academy, the abrupt pivot to distance learning in spring 2020 helped lay the groundwork for the robust and engaging distance learning curriculum developed for the 2020-2021 academic year. The IPA community rose to the challenge quickly and cohesively, exploring and embracing new, dynamic, and innovative ways to continue delivering our mission. Facilitated by a collective growth mindset, IPA’s dedicated faculty and staff continually improved the distance learning program. And through it all, our students persevered. IPA’s Technology team worked closely with faculty and administration to research different modes of curriculum delivery, leveraging what was already in place and incorporating new software and equipment. IPA’s existing one-to-one iPad program allowed distance learners to share a virtual space together with teachers and on-campus classmates every day.
In the Middle and Upper schools, the same high quality program was delivered to all students, whether on campus or off. The Secondary schedule was modified for a shorter day with additional flex time, to be mindful of the amount of screen time students were exposed to every day. It was an opportunity for the faculty to innovate ways of teaching. Whether it was keeping things light in the classroom, being extra flexible and accommodating, or making space for students to share their feelings during Puʻuhonua, the faculty and staff worked to make the year a positive and memorable one for all our students.
In the Elementary school, about 90% of students opted for in-person learning, with a few students in each grade choosing distance learning for the year. Special efforts were made to ensure distance learners also benefited from a sense of community and inclusion even while physically apart.

Navigator Athletics The 2020-2021 athletic year was like nothing we had ever seen before. Athletics was the farthest thing from people’s minds, but as students returned to campus, we began to think about the experiences that are important for our students, and athletics is certainly one of them. After months of planning, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) opened up sports to our student-athletes. As the ILH was the only interscholastic league to open a season, there were no HHSAA state championships, and there were no customary All-Stars Teams or MVP recognitions. However, IPA still celebrated great highlights from the strangest year in sports. The girls’ varsity volleyball team won their third consecutive ILH Division III championship with a perfect 7-0 record, sending Coach Stan Vincent into coaching retirement on a high. The team was one of IPA’s most veteran girls’ teams, graduating six seniors. The boys’ varsity volleyball team also graduated a large number of seniors (8), including Captains Luke Garcia ‘21 and Kailer Suerth ‘21.
ladies and four gentlemen, including Captain Elijah Esmeralda ‘21. Interest in girls’ varsity tennis continued to grow and was led by Kylee Fellows ‘21. Kylee was named IPA Outstanding Female Athlete in recognition of her impressive achievement as a three-sport athlete for all four years of her high school career. Even more impressive was that several of the sports she played ran concurrently due to season schedules, and then the pandemic. Athletics at IPA looked very different in 2020-2021, but that didn’t stop our athletes from representing themselves, their families, their friends, and their school with great pride.
The sporter and precision air riflery seasons were led by another solid group of seniors, with three

Casey had served as girls’ intermediate head coach, JV head coach, and just started as varsity head coach when he unexpectedly passed away. Casey was a great leader on and off the court, and always challenged his players to be better people. He knew if they did that, they would be better players.

Navigating Change: Student Reflections Elijah Esmeralda ‘21 “I definitely envisioned having a different senior year. There were disappointments, but there were also a lot of highlights, like our Senior Celebration. I learned this year that I take a lot of opportunities for granted. I always believed that there would be time to do something later since the world never changed drastically all at once - this year proved that I was certainly wrong. I know now that it is important to be as proactive as I can so I don’t waste the time and opportunities that have been given to me.”
Winleth Dukes ‘28 “This pandemic helped me see all of our IPA values in place. We showed ‘the power of human kindness’ when we protected each other by wearing masks and doing all safety precautions. ‘Generosity of spirit’ was shown when people gave their all to help others adapt to the unexpected event, sharing their gifts and talents by providing easy ways to learn – distance learning and in-person learning. People showed ‘commitment to excellence’ by going beyond, being dedicated, and striving to provide a better learning environment for us, and all of the students stayed committed to learning and doing amazing jobs at their assignments. The pandemic helped people see the light of all of these things, making these values valued.”
Sebastian Banquil ‘23 “What really stood out to me this last year was our school motto ‘Whenever you can, Help’. This year, it took on extra meaning for me because we were all going through this pandemic together, and we were all helping each other get through it together. I’m very grateful for the collective effort everyone put in during the year. Without the work of all the teachers, parents, faculty, and students the transition to, and the year of, distance learning wouldn’t have been as good as it was.”

Navigator Alumni: Mapping Their Journeys 6 student. She graduated in 2011, the second graduating class of Island Pacific Academy. After receiving her BA in Art at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Kelsey explored her interest in working abroad and took a position with the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program in Fukuoka, Japan where she has lived and worked for the past four years.
Kelsey Uehira ‘11 “I feel lucky to call IPA home again!” That’s the feeling Kelsey Uehira ‘11 had as she started Registrar KimasUehisa & Student Information Systems Manager. Kelsey is an IPA founding student, starting in 2004 as a Grade
Carson Lofton ‘16 When in acquisition discussions with companies in his role as Business Development Executive for The Islander Group, Carson Lofton ‘16 relies on the skills he learned from his teachers at IPA. “I learned how to communicate effectively through my AP English and creative writing classes. I’m 23 years old trying to convince a company head to let us buy their company. Why would they trust me if I can’t convey my trustworthiness and connection with them?” Problem solving, project management, data analytics, navigating new tasks – every day is different for Carson, and that’s what he finds most challenging and enjoyable about his position.
But IPA has always been a home to Kelsey, and she knew she would be back someday. Returning to campus last November was a true homecoming for her and she was excited to see many familiar faces on campus.
“Being welcomed back with open arms (or shakas for now!) has had a huge impact on why I continue to support IPA. I want students to go forward having this same feeling of ‘home’ and knowing that they can always return.” “Dr. Dan White always said ‘Whenever you can, help’. I find this phrase to be monumental in my life. At university, in Japan, here at IPA – the power of human kindness generates positivity in whatever community you are working. It makes me happy to know that current students are making new memories of a place I am deeply fond of.”
“During my college internships I realized that I don’t enjoy doing any one thing day in and day out. What I like to do every single day is to do something different every single day.” That realization led him to pursue a major in Entrepreneurship at Saint Louis University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in May 2020. Carson’s passion for business started in high school, and during his senior year he founded IPA’s chapter of DECA, an international organization that prepares young leaders and entrepreneurs for business careers. He also got involved at the state level, becoming vice president of Hawaiʻi State DECA. All of Carson’s skills and experiences position him well for his goal of owning his own company one
day. For now, he is looking forward to the end of the pandemic travel restrictions so he can dive into his other responsibilities with The Islander Group. “Once we get back to it I’ll be traveling for most of my job, helping our companies in the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam run more efficiently.”

Culture of Community Pulling Together to Give Back
Community counts, and the spirit of community this year was unprecedented. It was strengthened by the belief that we were all in this together. Island Pacific Academy and our students found many meaningful activities and events through the year that provided us with opportunities to give back to our community.
COMMUNITY HEROES For IPA’s Make a Difference Day students participated in the Change Maker Challenge to honor everyday heroes and shine a light on those making the world brighter. They created an artistic award (certificate, slideshow, or video) to present to the changemakers in their lives. For each piece of art submitted, the Bezos Family Foundation donated $5 to programs helping to solve various social issues. Kaitlyn Taaca ‘21 showed her appreciation to all the essential workers by recruiting students from IPA’s NHS, Interact Club, and National Art Honor society to create posters of appreciation. The thoughtful and attractive posters were displayed at Kapolei Shopping Center.
Komo mai kau māpuna hoe “Dip your paddle in” HEART & SOLE 5K FUN RUN Island Pacific Academy organized its first Heart & Sole 5K Virtual Fun Run to engage our families in a fun community, but socially distanced, event. Funds raised supported the IPA Annual Fund.

FEEDING THE COMMUNITY The Grade 5 Student Action Committee completed their annual food drive for The Pantry by Feeding Hawaii Together, collecting more than 1,700 lbs of food in just four days! And IPA’s National Honor Society brought in more than $4,000 in donations for their annual Food Drive with the Hawaii Foodbank. That translates to more than 6,600 lbs of food! Upper school students volunteered to help package food for the Keiki to Kupuna Foundation, which organizes the delivery of nutritious meals to kupuna who aren’t able to go out on their own. Kaitlyn Taaca ‘21 and Jonathan Carbonel ‘21 organized a Graband-Go of healthy snack bags to distribute to students at Mauka Lani Elementary as part of their NHS individual service project.
INTERACT IN THE COMMUNITY On World Polio Day IPA’s Interact Club participated in Rotary Club of Kapolei Sunset’s “Cupcakes for a Cause” to raise funds for PolioPlus and Kristin Chun ‘22 organized a virtual awareness campaign about polio and the efforts to eradicate it globally. Taylor Horita ‘22 helped organize “Ridges to Reefs Cleanup and Data Collection” with the Rotary Club of Kapolei Sunset. Club members spent the day picking up nearly 100 lbs of trash from the Kapolei area. Interact Club members spent spring break on a service project at Waimea Valley, rebuilding Hawaiian hale located in the park that had been damaged by flooding earlier in the month.
HOLIDAY HELPERS The Elementary school sponsored their annual Giving Tree, collecting and wrapping gifts to be delivered to the children and families at Māʻili Land Transitional Housing to share some joy during the season. IPA’s Secondary executive council organized “Operation Give Back” as a way for students to “pay it forward” by donating a gift for a child from Kids Hurt Too Hawaiʻi, a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist grieving and traumatized children and their parents in safe and healing ways. More than 50 children were sponsored. IPA Middle School Student Government and Grade 2 students created beautiful holiday cards, letters, and drawings for the residents at ʻIlima at Leihano Senior Living Community.

Plate It Forward
“Plate It Forward’’ was a new, creative fundraising event for Island Pacific Academy as we reimagined “Grand Expedition”, our annual gala fundraiser, to comply with local pandemic restrictions. In the spirit of “IPA Gives Back”, the aim of the two-week event was to help support restaurants and cafes in our community as they faced unprecedented challenges. IPA teamed up with 12 local eateries, creating promotional videos to share on social
media to encourage diners to support the restaurants by dining there on select days. The restaurants generously donated a portion of their proceeds from the event to IPA. In turn, IPA “plated it forward” by making a donation to The Pantry to help feed Hawai’i’s hungry. Through sponsorships, restaurant participation, and a silent auction, “Plate It Forward” raised more than $61,000 for IPA’s Tuition Aid Program.

13th Annual IPA Golf Tournament
The 13th Annual IPA Golf Tournament, presented by First Hawaiian Bank, was held on May 7, 2021 at Hawaiʻi Prince Golf Club.
