MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Aloha Island Pacific Academy Students, Family and Friends, As we celebrate our 15th year anniversary as an independent school in Kapolei, Hawaiʻi, we readily acknowledge and are grateful for our founders of our school, Dr. Daniel White, Mrs. Judith White and Mr. Lawrence Caster. Without their dream and vision to establish independent schools on the westside of Oahu 15 years ago, we would not be here today. We would like to also acknowledge our founding families who believed and were committed to Island Pacific Academy for their children even before the school was built and opened on September 13, 2004. It is with great honor and pleasure that I share with you Island Pacific Academy's 2019-20 Annual Report. Although we concluded the school year in unprecedented times during a global pandemic, Island Pacific Academy persevered and the fiscal year continued to be one of positive growth and productivity for our school. MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT A warm aloha to our many families and friends of Island Pacific Academy, To say this has been an extraordinary year would be an understatement. The COVID pandemic has touched every aspect of our daily lives – from toilet paper shortages to Zoom meetings to distance learning, we have had to adapt and innovate like never before.

The ramifications for schools have been especially dire, but I am so proud of our IPA leadership, faculty, and staff for the way they embraced these challenges and turned them into opportunities for our students. Early in the pandemic, Mr. Teramae and his team planned and implemented an online education curriculum virtually overnight. They also planned and executed a revised graduation program for the class of 2020 – while the ceremony was not what anyone had expected at the outset of the school year, the students and their families felt supported, recognized, and loved. And as a new school year began and the effects of the pandemic became clearer, IPA opened with a hybrid plan combining online and modified in-person classes in spaces specially designed for health and safety. Faculty and staff put into motion new protocols for everything from student drop-off to contact tracing. The results have proven to be nothing short of remarkable. Not only are our students continuing to receive a quality education, but they are doing so with minimal disruption and in a safe environment. Independent schools across the island have struggled with dropping enrollment and rising costs and IPA has not been immune. But because of great prudence and careful planning, IPA remains quite
healthy financially. Enrollment has been steady. While costs have risen due to the implementation of safety protocols and updates to technology, our finance team has managed to balance our budget; we even completed an important capital project at the elementary school building. As always, we continue to invest in our most important asset – our extraordinary faculty – through development opportunities and improvements to their compensation packages. Faith in and love for each other are what we turn to when all around seem uncertain. In that spirit, we offer our sincere gratitude to all who have supported IPA through these unprecedented times. Our leadership, administration, faculty, staff, students, families, board, donors and the broader community have come together like never before to hold up IPA and ensure our sustained success. While the road ahead will be difficult, what I have seen this past year gives me great confidence that Island Pacific Academy will continue to grow and thrive well into the future. At Island Pacific Academy, community counts – the community of students, of faculty and staff, of families and friends, of alumni, and of Kapolei. The strength of our community has never been tested or appreciated more than during this past year. We started 2019-2020 with a celebration of the 15th year of our Island Pacific Academy community. On September 13, 2004, IPA opened its first building to its first students – a culmination of the vision, dedication, and commitment of the school’s founders Dr. Daniel White, Judy White, and Larry Caster and its founding community of parents and supporters. We celebrated our seven faculty and staff members who have served the IPA community with heart for the past 15 years, and we recognized the 10-year anniversary of the first graduating class of IPA, the Class of 2010.

We ended 2019-2020 far from where we began, challenged by a global pandemic in ways no one could have imagined. And we all came together, bound by the underlying strength of our community. Our administrators united, navigating our community through turbulent waters. Our faculty supported one another, charting a way through an abrupt and unexpected transition to distance learning. Our students reached out to each other, connecting virtually through daily affirmations and fun activities. And you, our community of families and supporters, stepped up with generous donations to the IPA Annual Fund, providing much needed support for our community. 15 YEARS OF INNOVATIVE EDUCATION Island Pacific Academy commemorated its 15th anniversary on September 13, 2019 with a ceremony celebrating our past, present, and future. The 2019-2020 school year was a milestone for Island Pacific Academy – a decade and a half of innovative education in a place where values matter! On September 13, the entire IPA community, past and present, came together on campus for a special ceremony celebrating IPA’s 15th year. IPA’s co-founders Dr. Dan White, Judy White, and Larry Caster joined Gerald Teramae, Head of School, members of the Board of Trustees, and the whole student body to celebrate our beginnings, to reflect on our past, and to look forward to where we will go together, as a premier private school in Kapolei. Our co-founders were presented with a framed photo of themselves, which is displayed in the main Administrative office. The three also sat down to share their experiences with some of our Grade 4 students for a special video series, bringing together IPA's past and present.

FOUNDING PRINCIPLES At our 15th anniversary celebration, our founding members reflected on their experience of founding Island Pacific Academy and shared their thoughts with some of our Grade 4 students, bringing together IPA’s past and present.
"In my vision for IPA, I wanted graduates who would be known for the quality of their character, that you could trust their word, that they were kind, and that they were generous – they were always thinking about other people. I wanted graduates who would be known in the community. 'Oh, he or she is an IPA graduate, because they are so kind, so generous, with such good character.' Then I wanted young people to grow up pursuing whatever passion they found. You go to school to learn about different areas, and somewhere in all of that learning, for most kids a passion emerges, something you really like. And I wanted our school to be a place where you could find that passion and follow it forward. That’s the vision I had."

'What makes me really happy to come back to the school as a co-founder is to see that those values that we wanted to start the school on – human kindness, generosity of spirit, being helpful to others – that those things are still really important here, because we felt like those were things we wanted students to understand are really important in life. The school culture still gives off that feeling and that makes me really happy. What makes me confident is that there are lots of really energetic, bright students here that are committed to their school. You have a wonderful headmaster and very able and caring teachers who want their students to succeed. Mr. Teramae and the Board of Trustees are really committed to this school, so I know that's why the school is going to be a real success into the future."

"When they started developing Kapolei, they knew they needed a good school to support all the people that were going to move here. It probably took five to six years to find the right people to begin talking about the school. There were architects, engineers, and Dan and Judy, who helped to put together how the school was going to function – the curriculum, the teachers. We built it in phases. We started with the Elementary building. It took us three years before we started getting the school under construction and it took about a year to build. Then we started planning for the next building, and that took another couple of years to build.

In my job, which is development, there's usually a lot of competition. But what I found in developing IPA was that everyone wanted to help, and that made it a lot easier to go through the process."
"When I first met Dr. Dan, the passion that I saw in him was key. He said music was something he had within him – when I first walked through the door, we had such a connection with music. He said 'Do you want to be a music teacher here?' I had been teaching music at different places, but what I needed was a home, and that was what he was offering me. One thing he said to me was 'I want a singing school.' If you want a singing school, that's what I was going to give you. He wanted to make sure that whatever we brought to our kids here would be shared out into the community and people would know that's who we are - not just academics, but that full, well-rounded child that has everything you need to succeed. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Dr. Dan who gave me that gift, and it has been a gift ever since. So it was the best decision, back in 2004."

"Dan White called one day and I went in for an interview with him and Judy. I talked with them, and I just enjoyed them so much. I think they epitomize the humble pride that Dan wants kids at our school to reflect. They are just down to earth people. Everything was new, everyone was just so excited. All the parents were very gracious and people were just happy to be a part of the school. We've come a long way, and through all the ups and downs the spirit of the school is still great.

15 YEARS OF COMMUNITY As part of Island Pacific Academy's 15th anniversary celebration, we honored our five special faculty and staff members who also marked their 15th year as part of the IPA community. We asked them to reflect back and share their experiences with us. Happy 15th anniversary! Sabine Yamamura joined IPA on May 13, 2005 as a Secondary history teacher. She welcomes the new middle schoolers to the Upper school with open arms, a warm heart, and a no-nonsense attitude that bring both comfort and gentle discipline to the young ones. Ms. Sabine's passion and commitment to IPA is evident and it's clear why she has remained committed for the past 15 years.
"We work really hard to create a place students love to come to. It's definitely the IPA ʻohana that keeps me coming back, year after year. I feel grateful that even after all these years, I am able to make positive contributions to our school," she shares. "Seeing both of my kids grow up with IPA and graduate along with many of their childhood friends has been my biggest joy for sure."

"Muchas gracias por mis 15!" Laura Angel Guzman joined IPA on June 27, 2005 as the Secondary Spanish teacher, and has also served as IPA girls' and boys' tennis coach for 14 years. Maestra Laura knows that IPA is a special learning place where, with the right mind and heart, great things can happen. She created IPA's International Cultural and Educational Program, an annual student exchange between IPA and its sister school in Mexico, now in its 14th year.
For 15 years, Maestra Laura has been inspired by the hearts of the students and families. "IPA is a home for our students, where we nurture and polish the special talents of each student and inspire them to accomplish their dreams," she says. "We are a big ‘ohana, where we take care of everyone – students, families, teachers, and staff. I am very thankful for being part of IPA! Muchas gracias por mis 15!"

"That's the legacy of IPA – great students always trying to help." Stan Vincent joined IPA as the Secondary science teacher on July 20, 2005, at a time when the Secondary building didn’t even exist. He has also served as head coach for girls' and boys' varsity volleyball for 14 years.
I knew then that we were a real high school."
Helping build the school into what it is today is something Mr. Stan counts as one of his proudest moments.
"Most teachers would brag about their school's great academics or even athletic successes, but for me it's the values we promote," he shares. "It was the original vision of Dr. White. That's the legacy of IPA – great students always trying to help."

Momi Kuahiwinui joined IPA as the Kindergarten teacher on November 18, 2004. Since then, she has been a caring teacher of IPA's littlest ones. Ms. Momi has also worked to promote the knowledge and appreciation of Hawaiian culture – seen in the oli chanted at every school event, in the expansion of ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi in the curriculum, and, of course, in the beautiful May Day celebration every year, which she leads and organizes.
The core values of IPA – generosity of spirit, power of human kindness, respect – are what Mr. Stan still holds most important.
After 15 years, Ms. Momi continues to be inspired by the IPA community and school values. "There's something about IPA that gives our students more than just academics. It's found in the many school traditions that include all of the ʻohana, and in the aloha that is felt from teachers and staff. And it's in the values we will always teach and hoʻomau."

Eileen Novak is one of IPA's founding families, and over the past 15 years she has served as classroom assistant, Elementary office manager, Admissions Assistant, and is currently the Director of Admission. Ms. Eileen loves the students and gets to know them well. Watching the students graduate at every commencement ceremony is a proud moment for her – and there have been 11 of them so far.

CLASS OF 2020 Island Pacific Academy held a drive-up, socially distanced commencement ceremony on campus on Saturday, May 30, 2020 for the graduates of the Class of 2020 and their families. It wasn't the graduation they expected, and it's not one they will ever forget. Families arrived in cars decorated with balloons and signs, and even an inflatable rubber duck, and took their assigned stall in the parking lot. Faculty and staff lined up along Ala Kahawai street to cheer on the graduates. Each graduate emerged from their family's car, and was recognized individually as they walked up on stage where they picked up their diploma from a table with Head of School Gerald Teramae, masked and more than six feet away. Graduates received their traditional lei from their families on the field before all lining up next to their cars to toss their caps in celebration. Although it was not a traditional commencement ceremony, it was a memorable, unique, and heartfelt celebration of the Class of 2020.

NAVIGATOR ATHLETICS Despite all the challenges and cancellations, the Navigators stayed positive and found a way to succeed. The Athletic year started out just as it had in years past – the athletes and coaches returned ready to compete and win, and that’s what they did. Our fall season saw another very successful volleyball season at all levels, capped off by another varsity championship. The bowling team continued to grow in both numbers and successes, while sending a representative to the state tournament for the sixth year in a row. The winter season added more state reps with soccer, as part of PAC-5, and finally swimming, which came along with an ILH individual championship. The spring season started out with high hopes, and potential for more state representation. Our young golfers showed a lot of skill on the course, a new era of boys volleyball began and a familiar face was showing great hope on the track. Then the athletic world came to a sudden stop with the onset of COVID-19. On March 14, the athletes of IPA competed in a track and field competition, knowing that after that day, the season would be suspended. First the seasons were delayed, then ultimately cancelled for the safety of the athletes. No one knew at the time, but sports would be absent from IPA and the state of Hawaiʻi for 315 days. Athletics in 2019-20 certainly started out just as it had in years past, but it certainly didn't end that way. But despite all the challenges and cancellations, the Navigators stayed positive and found a way to succeed.

2019-2020 ANNUAL FUND The Island Pacific Academy Annual Fund provides unrestricted funds used to support various school programs, including our Financial Aid program, which provides need-based assistance to nearly 20% of our students. MONETARY GIFTS Gifts may be made to the Annual Fund to support operating expenses, or restricted to a specific purpose, such as financial aid, athletics, or performing arts, or to support capital improvements.
MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many employers match employee charitable gifts, making this a way to leverage your gift into an even larger contribution to the school. Check with the Human Resources department of your employer.
MAHALO NUI At a time of uncertainty, as we face this health and economic crisis, we are truly grateful for our community, which has come together in support of Island Pacific Academy. With your generous support, • teachers were able to pivot between in person to distance learning, • enhanced cleaning measures and purchases of PPE were made possible, • in total, more than $800,000 in financial aid was extended to support families in need. We thank you for your spirit of generosity.
