FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY Students, Family & Friends, As we look back on another school year, I’m pleased to be able to share ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY’s 2018-19 Annual Report.

It’s been another year of growth, with some exciting developments that have touched every part of our school community. And so it is with deep gratitude that I’d like to thank all of you — our alumni, students, families, and friends — who have chosen to support IPA with a donation in this past year.

By giving back to IPA, you’re helping to bring our school motto, “I Mua Me Ka Haʻaheo (Go Forward With Confidence)” to life. We know you share our vision of an education that builds confidence and character, prepares students for college and a career path, and values each child’s individuality. We believe that by working together toward this common goal, we can help young people reach their potential as caring, engaged citizens of the world.

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD Aloha e na ʻohana a me na hoa aloha ‘o IPA – Aloha family and friends of ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY! I’d like to start by expressing my appreciation for the incredible faculty, staff, and administrators at IPA. It’s thanks to your hard work and dedication that our students are getting the best education possible. When you have the opportunity, as I do, to see the commitment and energy in our classrooms every day, it’s hard to be anything but inspired.

The 2018-19 school year was one of our most successful to date.

Our enrollment continues to grow, giving us the opportunity to serve more West Oʻahu families every year. Financially, our careful stewardship of the school’s resources has enabled us to make some needed upgrades to school facilities and technology infrastructure, as well as to invest in our most important asset, our teachers and staff.

And we’re looking to the future. This year, with the support and input of students, families, faculty, and community stakeholders, the board and school leadership started work on a new strategic plan. This document will chart a course for the future of our school, and gives us a new perspective on our direction. We look

forward to working with you to complete this important project in the coming year.

We are grateful for the donors, volunteers, and supporters who have given so generously to support our mission. We are grateful for our wonderful students, who challenge us to be at our best every single day. But most importantly, we are grateful to you, our parents and families, who have trusted us with the care and education of your children. We never forget that the education of your son or daughter is among the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. Here at IPA, we take that responsibility seriously, and pledge to live up to the trust you place in us.

ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY is more than a school. It’s a community and a family. It’s a place of great learning, and a place of great caring. It’s a place where we hope students discover as much about themselves as they do about the world around them – and in doing so, begin to take their places as the leaders of our island home.

PARENT STORIES

FINDING JOY IN GIVING BACK From judging the Middle School science fair, to decorating the haunted house for the Fall Family Festival, to creating a parent-to-parent video to raise money for the Annual Fund, Sharon Nakamura loves giving back to IPA. “It’s so nice to feel like you’re part of the community,” she says. “The kids are great, the parents are great, the teachers are great. Who wouldn’t want to volunteer if they have the time?”

For Sharon, donating her time has been a way to express her appreciation for the education her daughter Haley received at IPA. After graduating in May, Haley is now a freshman majoring in Civil Engineering at MIT. “Sending her to IPA really gave her the edge, because she’s thriving here,” Sharon says. “The education she got, the nurturing that she got from her teachers — they really care.”

Volunteers are a big part of what make the school special, she adds.

“It enhances what’s already there,” she says. “When parents get involved, it adds that magic touch.”

STUDENT STORIES

THE CONFIDENCE OF AN IPA EDUCATION When Noah Chapman arrived at IPA in second grade, he barely spoke to anyone. After being bullied for a speech impediment at his old school, he was shy and withdrawn. But within a few weeks, that started to change. Three years later, Noah is a chatterbox with his friends, and speaks up in public when he’s out with his family.

“He’s gained confidence, he’s more outgoing,” says dad, Paul. “We saw a big difference.”

Paul attributes the change to IPA’s culture of respect and encouragement. He says Noah has thrived in an environment where teachers lead with values like personal responsibility, caring for others, and doing what’s right.

“When you have teachers speaking to him like a peer and showing him respect, it can’t help but raise the confidence in a young person,” he says.

Today, Noah is excelling at school, mastering new study skills, and talking about going to college.

“To be in the 5th grade and saying, ‘I’m going to the University of Hawaiʻi,’ that’s a big deal for me,” says Paul. “As parents, it’s wonderful to see this transformation.”

ALUMNI STORIES

FROM IPA TO THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY When Kate Uesugi ’15 graduated magna cum laude from George Washington University with a degree in business administration and a minor in sustainability, she was ready to see the world — and eager to make a difference. Now she’s working in Myanmar as a project manager with the World Wildlife Fund.

“I never thought I’d be doing something like this, but I really couldn’t have found a better job,” she says.

Uesugi credits her success to IPA, especially the IB program, which she says gave her the academic skills and global perspective to thrive in college and pursue an international career. The school’s focus on values, giving back, and community also shaped her path, she says.

What’s next for this IPA alum? Uesugi says she hopes to continue working in her field after her one-year fellowship ends in August. “I would love to continue work with a nongovernmental agency, and keep traveling,” she says.

FACULTY STORIES

THINKING BEYOND GRADUATION “The most rewarding part of my job is actually seeing the results,” says Andrew Marchetto-Ryan, College, Career and Life Readiness Counselor and Dean of Students at IPA. Marchetto-Ryan had already tried several careers — including working at bank and being a police officer — when he decided to go back to school for a master’s degree in education.

“I was looking for another way to make a difference,” he says.

After teaching at schools on the mainland and Oahu, he was excited to work at IPA because of its small class sizes, focus on academics, and emphasis on values. “It was the right fit for me,” he says.

At IPA, Marchetto-Ryan has coached basketball, advised the National Honor Society, and led school service trips to communities as nearby as Makaha and as far away as Tanzania. Now, after years in the classroom, he’s excited to be working an administrative role, helping students discover what they want to pursue after graduation and figure out how college can help them reach their goals.

“It’s not just about getting them through high school,” Marchetto-Ryan says. “It’s about helping them be successful after we send them out in the world.”

EVENTS GRAND EXPEDITION EN PROVENCE HONORS SUSAN MURRAY ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY’s 15th annual fundraising gala, Grand Expedition, was held December 1 at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center. More than 300 guests attended and the event raised more than $152,000 for financial aid, arts, technology, and academics.

This year's event honored Susan Murray, Chief Operating Officer of The Queen’s Medical Center – West Oʻahu. Murray has been a supportive partner, providing opportunities to showcase IPA students and participating in our community-building events. She shares our core values and commitment to providing quality services for the children and families of West Oʻahu. It was a successful evening celebrating the partnership between ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY and The Queen’s Medical Center – West Oʻahu. Mahalo to our generous sponsors, donors, volunteers, and guests!

MICHAEL PAULO AND FRIENDS BENEFIT CONCERT Nationally and internationally-acclaimed saxophonist Michael Paulo held a special benefit concert supporting the ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY music program on December 9 at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center. Joining him were saxophonist Jessy J, legendary pianist Rene Paulo, Jordan Segundo, and Danny Kaleikini, with Al Waterson as emcee. The concert raised more than $6000 for the music program through ticket sales and a silent auction.

Michael Paulo, and his father Rene, are part of our IPA community.

Michael is the uncle of – and Rene the grandfather of – Kainoa '27, Kainalu '30, and Kaila '32.

IPA'S 12TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY's 12th Annual Golf Tournament was held at the Hawaiʻi Prince Golf Club on May 16. The event sold out even before the registration deadline with more than 150 golfers, 21 tournament sponsors, and 7 in-kind sponsors participating. The tournament raised more than $30,000 in support of the IPA Athletics Department and other programs.

NAVIGATORS IN THE COMMUNITY

KE ALOHA A PAUAHI COLLABORATION GOOD NEIGHBORS, STRONG COMMUNITY In January, IPA and Kamehameha Schools partnered to provide children of Hawaiian ancestry increased access to a private school, values-based education. The Ke Aloha a Pauahi Collaboration provides $300,000 in tuition assistance for Native Hawaiian students at IPA. This is a multiyear commitment, with tuition assistance beginning for the 2019-2020 school year.

IPA GOES GREEN In late Spring, IPA installed a 480-panel photovoltaic array above the lower parking lot. The project will be activated and online in late 2019. The total system size of the PV array is 225 kW, which will help reduce the school's carbon footprint. Anticipated cost-savings should be realized beginning in early 2020.

IPAPA FALL FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT The families of IPA came together for the 3rd annual Fall Family Movie Night on the Lawn on October 13 to enjoy a Coco-themed haunted house, costume contest, keiki games, chili contest, and movie on the lawn.

The event raised funds for IPAPA, the IPA Parent-Teacher Association.

IPA students gave back to the community and brought joy to the senior residents at 'Ilima at Leihano with many activities throughout the year, including a fundraiser for Alzheimer's Awareness, interviews for the Grade 2 unit on Community, various holiday crafts, and a "Senior Prom" with the IPA seniors.

IPA STUDENTS PAINT THE TOWN A construction project near the school provided an opportunity for students to get involved with the community. Elementary and secondary students designed murals reflecting what community means to them and painted them on 4x8 boards, which were hung along the construction wall. It was an excellent opportunity for IPA to work with our new neighbors to beautify the community.

STUDENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE Make a Difference Day is one of IPA’s missions lived with heart – giving back to our community. IPA collaborated with Tyrell’s Angels, a non-profit supporting families of Puʻuhonua o Waiʻanae, to provide joy to the children they assist. Middle school students created holiday stockings, bags of decorated cookies, and jars of slime for the children for their annual holiday party.

STUDENT MURALS BRIGHTEN THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER Annie Uesugi '19, Mina Cintron '20, and Taj Tottori '26 were honored to paint their artwork as murals at The Queen's Medical Center – West Oʻahu. The murals represent different facets of healthy living, and the project was part of a Blue Zones Project certification for The QMC-WO, with the goal of brightening the drab stairwell into an inviting space to encourage people to take the stairs.

ILLUMINATE WALK 2019 In May, IPA partnered with The Queen's Medical Center – West Oʻahu as a sponsor of their inaugural Illuminate Walk. The signature event raised funds to support the hospital, while promoting health and wellness.

CLASS OF 2019 On May 25, ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY recognized its 10th class of graduates at a special commencement ceremony held at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Kapolei. The 24 members of the Class of 2019 were awarded their diplomas and recognized for their achievements.

100% of the Class of 2019 will be attending a four-year college or university, including MIT, Stanford, Penn State, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of HawaiĘťi at MÄ noa, Parsons School of Design, and Smith College.

NAVIGATOR ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS

The IPA Navigators had another exciting and successful year, including two ILH team championships, a KSSK Coach of the Week, an ILH Player of the Year, and an ILH Coach of the Year. And for the first time in the school's history, the Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team played a televised game on Spectrum OC16 in front of a statewide audience.

Strengthening ties to the community, IPA established a partnership with the Hawaiʻi Agriculture Research Center to use their beautiful, plantationstyle gym as a practice facility for our

volleyball and basketball teams. We continued our partnership with the Kalaeloa Tennis Association, through Senator Mike Gabbard, allowing the boys' and girls' tennis teams to practice and compete at their facility.

The third annual Athletic Banquet was held at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Kapolei. The banquet was capped off by the inspiring words of local MMA fighter, and IPA parent, Yancy Medeiros (Kaya GabrielMedeiros '24).

ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY ANNUAL FUND The ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY Annual Fund provides non-restricted funds used to support various school programs, including our Financial Aid program, which provides need-based assistance to nearly 20% of our students. The Annual Fund also helps bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the full cost of delivering an outstanding education. Families, faculty and staff, board of trustee members, and community partners all participate in this annual giving.
