WHERE VALUES MATTER Where Values Matter. It is our school’s motto. It is on our website and our t-shirts. It is in our ads and on our banners. It is part of our school mission – to provide the opportunity and environment for students to develop strength of character. It is the guiding star by which we navigate. Dr. Daniel White founded ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY upon a set of principles that continue to imbue the culture of IPA today. He envisioned that students and faculty would understand and practice the power of human kindness and exhibit a generosity of spirit which, taken together, result in respect for others. These values are the foundation by which IPA students

live and learn about the world around them, and help define our guiding star. When IPA first opened, Dr. White commissioned Pumehana Silva and Melelani Spencer to create an oli, or Hawaiian chant, for the school that reflected our philosophy and recognized and respected a sense of place and culture. The ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY oli, Nā Kau a Kau, tells a story of the journey of IPA students in this ahupuaʻa of Honouliuli, as they navigate through their academic careers, always mindful of the values that guide us: humble pride, love, respect, generosity, and gratitude.

At the Elementary Assemblies, during the Secondary Town Halls, and before all special events, IPA students, faculty, and staff together chant the oli as a reminder of the values comprising a moral code that informs all relationships in the IPA community. Throughout this report, you will see examples of these values being lived with intention by our students everyday – in big, grand ways and in small, daily gestures – as they travel along their academic journey. And, at the end, we arrive. A pae aku.

DEAR IPA FAMILY & FRIENDS, It is with great pleasure and distinction that I share with you ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY’s 2017-18 Annual Report. This fiscal year continued to be one of positive growth and productivity for ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY. On behalf of ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY Board of Trustees and the students and families we serve, we extend our deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to all of you—our alumni, students, families and friends—who have chosen to make the school a recipient of your philanthropy in the 2017-18 school year. I am grateful and honored as well to be able to thank all of those who have assisted in bringing IPA’s vision, mission and core values to life at our school. We will continue to work diligently and with genuine commitment to press forward in keeping with our vision statement of “I Mua Me Ka Ha’aheo - Go Forward with Confidence” and our mission statement to prepare students for college success and lifelong learning while instilling our core values of strength of character, generosity of spirit, and a commitment to excellence. As we continue our journey on becoming one of the “premier independent schools in the nation,” I am extremely pleased to report that we, as a collective community, continue to be committed to doing our best job to help our students with academic achievement and success as well as being an educational institution “where values matter and where students are valued.” We believe that having strong values, a moral purpose and integrity are of equal importance to academic achievement and success. Your continued inspiration and philanthropic support and commitment to ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY will be essential for the present and future success of our school. With deep appreciation, we thank you for your faith in ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY as we move forward with confidence and purpose. ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY grows even stronger as an independent school because of you. Mahalo, Gerald Teramae

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S

MESSAGE GERALD TERAMAE Head of School

ALOHA IPA ‘OHANA, It has been another remarkable year at IPA. We have extended our reach into our community by growing our enrollment. We have been able to hire and retain some of the best teaching talent and leadership in Hawaiʻi. But most importantly, we have once again delivered on our promise of a high-quality education in a warm and enriching environment for our students and families. Attending graduation at the close of this school year, I was struck by the poise and accomplishments of our graduates. Yes, they are bright and articulate, but they are also considerate and caring, not just for each other, but for their school community and the broader community as well. They will go on to do remarkable things because of the remarkable young men and women they have become at IPA. I was proud of them and for them and proud of IPA as well for doing our part in helping them to become their best selves.

PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE LANCE WILHELM

Board President, 2017-2020

One of the most important responsibilities of your board of trustees is to provide oversight, guidance and stewardship of the school’s financial assets. For those families who have been part of our ʻohana for many years, you will remember times when the fiscal condition of our school was less than optimal. While we still have much room for improvement, the board is very pleased to report that the school completed this past year “in the black”, marking the third consecutive year of positive financial performance. With this solid foundation and with good prospects for another year of strong enrollment, the board can begin to envision an even brighter future for IPA. We will begin doing this through a renewed strategic planning and visioning process this summer. ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY is more than a couple of buildings. It’s more than a group of outstanding educators and it’s more than a collection of students, parents and families. IPA is a community dedicated to helping young people achieve their dreams and in doing so, making Hawaiʻi and the world a better place. This is not an easy mission and not one that can be accomplished alone. It will take the efforts of all of us; parents, faculty, board members, keiki and kupuna. We have much to do, but so much is possible. And so I close with a request: Lend a hand. Lean in. Volunteer. Donate. Get engaged and stay engaged because we can’t do it without you and our kids deserve it. Mahalo & Aloha, Lance Wilhelm

ANNUAL FUND Ways to Give

There are many ways in which you can support IPA, from monetary gifts to gifts-in-kind to participation in our fundraising events. Find an option below that feels like the best fit for you and contact Advancement for more information on how to make it happen.

MONETARY GIFTS

You may make monetary gifts by cash, check, or credit card. Gifts may be made to the Annual Fund to support operating expenses, or restricted to a specific purpose, such as financial aid, athletics, or performing arts, or to support capital improvements. You may use a credit card and donate by visiting our website, www.islandpacificacademy.org.

02

MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS

Many employers match employee charitable gifts, making this a way to leverage your gift into an even larger contribution to the school. Check with the Human Resources department of your employer.

03

GIFTS-IN-KIND

The school welcomes donations of items that would otherwise need to be purchased by the school. The school website offers a “Wish List” of specific items, which have been expressly requested by faculty to support areas of the school program.

04

STOCKS OR SECURITIES

A gift of appreciated stock may offer a two-fold tax saving: providing an income tax deduction on the full market value at the time of the gift, and avoiding capital gains on the increased value of the stock.

05

PLANNED GIFTS

Donors may consider giving through such means as life insurance, bequests, or charitable trusts as a way of benefiting the school and also reducing estate or inheritance taxes. You should consult with your financial planner when considering a gift of this kind.

pride Each year, Grade 6-8 students spend months researching and designing a science project. They work in class and at home collecting and analyzing data, culminating in a public presentation of their research at the IPA Middle School Science Fair. In addition to developing critical thinking and public presentation skills, students develop a sense of pride and ownership in their projects. Their pride is most evident as they present their projects to teachers, professionals in the science community, and the public during the science fair.

haʻaheo

01

Science fair mentor Alyssa Kuffel shares that feeling. “I cannot describe how proud I am of our students. They all represent IPA so well.” Vice Principal Michelle Bradley agrees. “Each year, our students step up and make our community proud.” This year, Grade 8 students Zaheer Gulko, Aubrey Ramsbottom, and Emma Layaoen stood out with their project on the effects of sunscreen chemicals on coral. They worked with coral scientists to show the devastating effects of these chemicals on the coral reefs. They advanced to the Hawaiʻi State Science & Engineering Fair, and their project was featured on ThinkTech Hawaiʻi. Soon after, Hawaiʻi became the first state to ban certain WATCH THE sunscreen chemicals to INTERVIEW protect our reefs.

love It started as a simple idea to strengthen the connection between the Elementary and Secondary schools, but has evolved into something more meaningful than expected. To foster the idea of “one school, one campus”, then Principal Kip Cummings implemented the Kinder-Senior Buddies program, where each senior student is paired up with one or two kindergarteners for activities throughout the school year. The initial meeting is sometimes a bit awkward as the high schoolers figure out how to relate to these little people and the kindergarteners size up these larger strangers. But by the end of the hour, they’re playing jan ken po, sharing jokes, laughing hard, and holding hands. The Kinder-Senior Buddies come together during the year for special events like pumpkin carving, holiday caroling, a Valentine’s Day dance, and a farewell gathering before commencement. Tears are often shed as cards and gifts are exchanged and the kindergarteners come to realize their buddies will soon be leaving IPA.

Commencement doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the connection between the seniors and the younger students. The new first graders write letters to their new college buddies to include in the “Boxes of Aloha” IPA sends to new graduates early in their first semester at college. Some of the senior buddies even come back to visit with their Kinderbuddies when they return to campus during the holiday break!

A YEAR AT IPA 2017-2018

Amazing things happened in 2017-2018 as IPA celebrated its 13th year! In addition to all the day-to-day excitement on campus, IPA students and families were kept busy with community events, IPA traditions, and opportunities for IPA students to give back. Highlights included the student-organized “Aloha for Texas” benefit; IPAPA’s 2nd Annual Fall Movie Night on the Lawn; IPA Gives Back Day; two theatre productions – Almost, Maine and Mulan, Hoʻike Night; annual IPA traditions like the Elementary school’s Na Kupuna Day and Multi-Cultural Performance, and the school-wide May Day Celebration; and our big community event, West Fest.

respect IPA’s Five Agreements comprise a contract everyone, from the Kindergarteners to the Head of School, agrees to live by as members of our community. There are five separate agreements, but underlying each is the idea of respect. Students show respect in many ways: they are considerate of others (aloha); they share only put-ups (pono); they take care of the campus and each other (mālama); they listen carefully to others (hoʻolohe) and show tolerance for different views; and they respect the responsibility they each have as a member of the IPA community (kuleana).

hōʻ ihi

One of the most visible examples of respect practiced by the students is seen every morning as the flags are raised in front of the school. Each year, Grade 5 students are given the responsibility of raising and lowering the flags at the start and end of the day. This daily activity teaches them about their civic responsibility and the respect that should be shown towards these symbols of nationalism. Students are taught how to fold, mount, and lower the flag without allowing it to touch the ground, and they are taught the significance flying a flag at half-mast as a show of respect. By taking on this responsibility, the Grade 5 students, and all of the student body who see them performing flag duty, are learning to respect our valued traditions and are encouraged to be active participants in perpetuating them.

West Fest supports student enrichment grants and educational activities through the funds raised at the event. This year, over 1000 people attended West Fest, coming together as one, making the second year of the event even more successful than the first.

generosity When the images of the devastation in Houston, Texas caused by Hurricane Harvey started being shown on the news, a group of 14 IPA seniors were moved to do something to help. Out of a feeling of empathy and a generosity of spirit, this group of students set out and organized “Aloha for Texas,” a project dreamt, conceived, and organized by IPA students wanting to make a difference in the lives of those in dire need.

lokomaikaʻi

Kimberly Vance Tam Welch Judy White Charletta Wilson Yuko Wilson

During the very short span between the inception and execution of the idea, the students themselves had to network, negotiate, and delegate all that is involved in planning a community event. Despite the daunting task, the students stepped up, reached out, and brought together a community moved by a desire to make a difference – hearts united with nothing but Aloha for Texas. The benefit night on Saturday, September 16, 2017, with live entertainment, food, and activities, raised $6636 for the J.J. Watt Foundation’s “Houston Flood Relief Fund,” which assisted with the rebuilding efforts for those in Houston affected by Hurricane Harvey. “Aloha for Texas was a beautiful display of our youth’s genuine compassion for others and a desire that led the students to see only one outcome: the positive impacts of human kindness,” says Elissa Minamishin, Dean of Student Life & Leadership.

GOLF TOURNAMENT 11th Annual

Our 11th Annual Golf Tournament was held on May 17 at the Kāneʻohe Klipper Golf Course on the beautiful Windward side. This was the first year that our golfers trekked over to the other side, and it was well worth the trip! It was an enjoyable day of golf, with on-course contests like the Hole-in-One, Longest Drive, Most Accurate Drive, and Closest-tothe-Pin. For the second year in a row, a lucky golfer won a Hole-inOne prize. This year, Mark Tawara hit a 6-iron hole-in-one on #11, winning a 50” Smart TV! The tournament earned funds to support IPA’s Athletic programs. Special thanks to our generous sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Come out to the Klipper with us again on Thursday May 16, 2019!

gratitude The Navigator Award is the highest student award at IPA, given each year to a graduating senior. The recipient is selected by the faculty as someone who personifies key components of IPA’s mission statement: strength of character, commitment to become an involved citizen, and exhibiting confidence to maximize their potential in preparation for college and as a life-long learner. Shania Bravo was the Class of 2018 recipient of the Navigator Award. Whereas the winner of the award will traditionally give a speech at Commencement about the significance of the school’s mission or give life advice to the graduates, Shania chose instead to use her time to share her sincere gratitude for each of her classmates in a selfless, heartfelt, and emotional speech.

Lance Wilhelm President

Calling upon each student to stand, Shania spoke of the character of each and their unique contributions to the Class of 2018. She recognized each individual’s value and made every one of her classmates feel special, giving them their time in the spotlight to be appreciated and celebrated. The Navigator Award recipient is selected for more than an impressive GPA – he or she is someone considered a role model both academically and morally. Shania demonstrated her generous character, service towards others, and sense of gratitude in a most meaningful way.
