ALOHA FAMILIES, What a difference a year makes...actually it has been four years since the last Annual Report for Island Pacific Academy and we are in such an amazing place as a school and as a community in 2017! Although we have had our share of challenges since 2013, we have emerged stronger than ever and this is made possible through our outstanding staff, incredible faculty and a very supportive parent and alumni community.

As an alumni parent and as a board member and chair, I am so grateful for the vision our founders Dan and Judy White and Larry Caster had to create an Independent School on the Westside. A school that offers a high quality education and embraces and instills the power of human kindness and the generosity of spirit from Kindergarten through the High School years. Sounds like a simple formula but what it has produced is truly outstanding young women and men who have experienced much success in education and in life.

Having our financial picture so bright now allows us to fully focus on enhancing and further developing the educational opportunities offered at Island Pacific Academy. These opportunities are offered in a safe and stimulating environment that allows your children to explore their potential and mature into fine citizens of our community. Now that the previous debt is gone it allows us the flexibility to continue to compensate our amazing and dedicated faculty for all they do on a daily basis for our children. We are so fortunate as well to have Mr. Gerald Teramae leading our school and his passion and vision will lead us to a continued path of growth. He has embraced the uniqueness and charm of IPA and has great plans for our future and the success of the school.

I am so humbled to still be a part of Island Pacific Academy and will be forever grateful for what IPA gave my daughter and our family. It instilled confidence, a fearless attitude and the love of learning: what more could a parent ask for? I thank all of you, staff, faculty, parents and alumni for your unending support and passion for Island Pacific Academy. I recall from the very beginning of our time at IPA, Dan White saying “Whenever you can, help”. You have done just that, you have given many hours of time, donations and monetary gifts, it has been greatly appreciated!

Without all of you, we simply would be another building in Kapolei and not the Island Pacific Academy ʻohana that we have become.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the students and families we serve, we extend our deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to all of you—our alumni, families and friends—who have chosen to make the school a recipient of your philanthropy in the 2016-17 year.

The global educational landscape and direction is changing rapidly and as we work towards becoming one of the premier independent schools in the nation we will have to adopt and adapt to these rapid changes for the benefit of your students and our school community at IPA. Our mission to prepare students for college success and lifelong learning while instilling our core values of the power of human kindness, trust and respect, generosity of spirit, recognition of each individual’s inherent value, and a commitment to the highest level of ethical standards and excellence within the school community is a commitment we adhere to every day.

This mission together with our vision of “I Mua Me Ka Haʻaheo - Go forward with Confidence” ensures that we are positioning ourselves to meet the rapidly changing landscape and direction of global education.

We are committed to doing our best job to help our students with academic achievement and success but we are also a school, “Where Values Matter.” We believe that having strong values, a moral purpose and integrity are of equal importance to academic achievement and success. As a school community, a significant and relevant daily part of IPA’s culture and climate is having mutual respect, practicing attentive listening, expressing appreciation, giving the right to participate or pass, taking care of each other and of this place.

2016-2017 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2016-2017 school year was an exciting one, with several campus improvement projects, including a new playground and student center, and the addition of some new events to our calendar, including Fall Movie Night on the Lawn and our new big community event, West Fest.

AUG NEW PLAYGROUND DEDICATION The Elementary school dedicated a new playground in a special ceremony. The playground and new turf were funded by anonymous donors, a matching grant, on-campus fundraisers, and a generous grant from the James & Abigail Campbell Family Foundation.

NEW SECONDARY STUDENT CENTER

The new Student Center on the third floor of the Secondary building was completed in early September. Students played a large part in the design and completion of the project, selecting the furniture and painting the mural wall. The comfortable, bright, and modern space serves as a study center and multipurpose room for IPA’s middle- and upper-school students.

FALL MOVIE NIGHT ON THE LAWN

IPAPA’s first annual Family Movie Night attracted over 600 attendees. The Elementary building was transformed into the “Hotel Transylvania” Haunted House for students and their families to enjoy. A Halloween costume parade, face painting, pumpkin decorating, food concessions and a showing of “Hotel Transylvania 2” on the lawn made for a fun family night at IPA.

GRAND EXPEDITION 2016

Grand Expedition 2016 was held at the newly opened Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko Olina. Over 300 attendees were dazzled by the sultry voice of Starr Kalahiki while enjoying the culinary delights of the Four Seasons Resort chefs. Guests participated in both silent and live auctions and helped to raise over $73,000 for Island Pacific Academy.

DEC THANK AMERICA’S TEACHERS GRANT Mrs. Debbie Yoshino, IPA’s Elementary Technology teacher, was the recipient of a $2,000 grant from Farmers Insurance through their Thank America’s Teachers program. She was one of the top votegetters for her proposal to design and implement a satellite credit union with the students in her technology class.

10TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The IPA Annual Golf Tournament took place at Coral Creek Golf Course this year. We had more than 70 players participate. The highlight of the tournament was the $25,000 cash prize for Hole-in-One won by an IPA parent. Funds raised support IPA Navigator athletics and the financial aid program. Golfers were treated to a Hawaiian bento lunch and massages before the tournament and received a special delivery of mini poke bowls while out on the course.

Each year the Secondary school Student Government plans a week of fun activities for Grades 6-12 to promote class bonding and school pride. The highlights of the week included “Dress Like a Teacher” day and the always entertaining Class Dance & Cheer competition.

MAY DAY CELEBRATION

IPA observed its 10th May Day on Friday, April 28, with a beautiful celebration of music and hula. The theme for this May Day was “He Lei PoinaʻOle Ke Keiki”, which translates as “a child is a lei never forgotten.” This ʻōlelo noʻeau (wise saying) represents the beauty and close relationship between keiki (children) and mākua (parents), or flowers (pua) and lei. The songs selected for this year’s program were all composed for pua of Hawaiʻi, both flowers and children alike.

COMMENCEMENT – CLASS OF 2017

IPA graduated its 8th class on Saturday, May 27 at the beautiful Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko Olina.

Local-born award-winning playwright Lee Cataluna served as the keynote speaker. In attendance were IPA’s Board of Trustees, including the founding Head of School, Dr. Dan White.

WHY WE GIVE IN THEIR OWN WORDS My husband and I remember a

meeting in 2002 in Kapolei – it was standing-room only. Talk was there was going to be a private school built which would serve the west side. We had our two babies in tow as we attended. What an exciting prospect it was to envision a school that was going to be only a few minutes from our house. Gone were the worries about how we were going to manage driving the kids to a town school, or possibly having to send them to public school.

Island Pacific Academy quickly became our children’s home away from home. We vowed as parents to put ourselves behind the school, through thick and thin, hoping for the best of success for all. Giving to the Annual Fund became something that we felt was very important from the beginning. It is the one way we can help the school show on paper that we, as parents, believe in its mission and what it stands for. It is always our hope that our small contribution will help reach the school’s annual fund goal of 100% parent and staff support.

Now that our children are both nearing 14 years of IPA education, it is clear to us that we have done the right thing, in both giving and continuing to enroll our children at IPA. They are both confident, happy, bright, and most importantly, surrounded by many dear friends. This is indeed priceless. Thank you, Island Pacific Academy.

graduate of the Class of 2010, I’ve continued to be inspired to contribute to Island Pacific Academy’s Annual Fund.

This fundraiser is an important piece of the school’s operating income to maintain the quality of education that my son, Evan Fujimoto received. Evan graduated with a BA in Engineering Physics, and I truly believe we need to give back what IPA has invested in our children’s futures. I encourage all parents of alumni to support its mission in educating our students to the standards they need to survive in today’s society.

For 13 years, ISLAND PACIFIC

Academy has been an important part of our lives. Kerri started with IPA from the beginning, and Stan joined the faculty a year later. We feel honored to be part of a great group of educators hired to help build the legacy of IPA in its early years.

We have watched the school grow from an empty dirt lot to what it is today. There have been ups and downs, but we have chosen to weather the storms because IPA is like family to us. We are committed to the mission and values of IPA and see first hand how they are lived out daily here on campus. Donating to the Annual Fund is an expression of our love for IPA. We believe IPA is already a premier school in our nation. Everyday we learn so much just from being surrounded by the professional and passionate colleagues we work with, as well as the students who we have the privilege of sharing lives with everyday.

Next year, IPA will graduate our first group of students who have been at IPA from the beginning. These students started in Junior Kindergarten and will have completed 14 years when they graduate in May. Legacy or Lifer, whatever you choose to call them, we’d like to think that we are Lifers at IPA too.

ACADEMY offers a strong college prep program on the Leeward side of the island. Their curriculum, that has prepared students at varying levels for college in the next century, is quite impressive. Teachers have created nurturing and challenging environments where students learn and grow, and feel safe to express their opinions freely. Kira loves her teachers. They have been the best!

Since so many costs of running a private school cannot be covered by a reasonable tuition that would attract families, the school is dependent upon donations from their ʻohana. IPA is a young school, and therefore, does not yet have a strong alumnae base from which to draw significant donations. Therefore, we all need to consider helping however we can to keep our diverse programs healthy.

MONETARY GIFTS

You may make monetary gifts by cash, check, or credit card. Gifts may be made to the Annual Fund to support operating expenses, or restricted to a specific purpose, such as financial aid, athletics, or performing arts, or to support capital improvements.

STOCKS OR SECURITIES

A gift of appreciated stock may offer a two-fold tax saving: providing an income tax deduction on the full market value at the time of the gift, and avoiding capital gains on the increased value of the stock.

MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS

Many employers match employee charitable gifts, making this a way to leverage your gift into an even larger contribution to the school.

PLANNED GIFTS

Donors may consider giving through such means as life insurance, bequests, or charitable trusts as a way of benefiting the school and also reducing estate or inheritance taxes. You should consult with your financial planner when considering a gift of this kind.

SENIOR NIGHT

IPA hosted the first ever Senior Athlete Recognition Night in February, highlighting the accomplishments of our senior athletes. The evening included live entertainment by the IPA Band, a catered buffet dinner with dessert, and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

INAUGURAL ATHLETIC BANQUET

IPA held its inaugural Athletic Banquet on May 7, 2017 at the Hawaiʻi Okinawa Center. All student athletes from grades 7 – 12 were recognized for their efforts and achievements over the course of the 2016-2017 school year at the special dinner hosted for the athletes and their families. More than 220 of our IPA ʻohana turned out for the evening’s festivities.

GRAND EXPEDITION FOUR SEASONS RESORT OʻAHU AT KO OLINA Grand Expedition, our annual fundraising gala, transports its guests to a different location each year. The destination city influences the cuisine and decor of the event, lending to the authenticity of the experience. 10TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT GOLF TOURNAMENT CORAL CREEK GOLF COURSE IPA’s 10th Annual Golf Tournament was held at the Coral Creek Golf Course in ʻEwa Beach. It was a fun day of golf for all, including on-course contests like the Hole-inOne, Longest Drive, Most Accurate Drive, and Closest-to-the-Pin. The highlight of the event was IPA parent Chito Alcantra’s hole-in-one on Hole #13, which won him the Hole-inOne Grand Prize of $25,000. The tournament event earned funds to support IPA’s Athletic programs.

Special thanks to the Golf Tournament committee – Keith Kodani (IPA Parent ‘17), Wayne Yamamoto (IPA Parent ‘15, ‘16 and IPA Golf Coach), and Todd Murata (IPA Parent ‘23, ‘26) – for their efforts in planning and securing prizes.
