IPA PROFESSIONAL AWARDS

The Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) takes great pride in recognizing individuals for their contributions of leadership, patient care, professional involvement, and public service. The following awards, presented during IPA’s 2026 Annual Meeting in Coralville, IA, serve to capture Iowa pharmacy’s spirit of service and its culture of professionalism. Each recipient is permanently recognized on a master plaque for their respective award at the IPA headquarters in Urbandale, IA.

BOWL OF HYGEIA

William (Bill) Drilling, RPh

Sioux City, IA

Bill Drilling was awarded the 2025 Bowl of Hygeia for his sustained commitment to pharmacy and community service. The award was presented at the 2025 IPA Annual Meeting in Des Moines, IA.

For me, serving my community isn’t just something I do—it’s at the heart of who I am.

At an early age, Drilling knew he wanted to help people and serve his community. He began working alongside his father in their family pharmacy at just twelve years old. “I saw the way customers trusted him, and how his kindness and knowledge made a real difference in their lives,” he said.

Drilling attended undergrad at Briar Cliff University and earned his BS Pharm from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1985. Following graduation, he returned home to serve patients in his community.

As the current owner and Pharmacist-in-Charge of Drilling Pharmacy in Sioux City, IA, Drilling has been providing pharmacy services to Siouxlanders for more than forty years. As one nominator put it, “there’s a true family atmosphere [at Drilling Pharmacy]. Patients feel seen, heard, and cared for like they’re part of something special.” Drilling’s service to his community goes far beyond the pharmacy door.

Drilling’s volunteerism is vast—from community health fairs to career days. He has organized countless community events, including the parade, carnival, car show, and free meals for community members. He has sponsored golf tournaments, little league teams, men’s bowling leagues, silent auctions and more, giving back wherever he can. “I’m inspired to give back,” he said, “because I truly believe we’re put here to help one another. When we care for each other, we all grow stronger.”

Drilling’s many contributions to his community and the profession are undeniable, making him well deserving of the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia Award.

ABOUT THE AWARD

One of the most prestigious awards in the pharmacy profession, the Bowl of Hygeia recognizes a pharmacist who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to community service. The award is part of a national awards program co-sponsored by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) with one recipient chosen from each state every year. Iowa’s recipient is chosen by a committee of civic leaders from across the state, and the selection is unknown until the evening of the IPA Awards Banquet.

ROBERT G. GIBBS DISTINGUISHED PHARMACIST

Diane Reist, BS Pharm, PharmD, RPh

Cedar Rapids, IA

Diane Reist is a Clinical Specialist in Transitional Care at the University of Iowa Health Care. In this role, she helps ease the transition of medically complex patients and facilitates communication among providers for patients discharged from the acute care hospital. She is also part of several integrated discipline research projects and works in population health at UIHC’s Accountable Care Organization (ACO).

Reist received her BS in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa and her PharmD from the University of Florida. For 29 years, Reist practiced at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, IA, in various roles from intern to pharmacy director. She has worked in nearly all facets of pharmacy practice, from hospital to community and long-term care to a corporate PPO pharmacy.

As an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, she has mentored numerous pharmacy students and residents, nurturing the next generation of pharmacists. She has welcomed hundreds of students into her home for Thanksgiving dinner for decades. Deservingly, Reist has earned the Ben Pardini Interdisciplinary Teaching Award and multiple University of Iowa College of Pharmacy preceptor awards.

Within IPA, Reist has served as President (2020-2021), Speaker of the House, Chair of IPA’s policy committees, and so much more. As one nominator put it, “her exemplary work, leadership, and passion for the pharmacy profession make her the perfect candidate” for the Robert G. Gibbs Distinguished Pharmacist Award.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Robert G. Gibbs Distinguished Pharmacist Award recognizes an Iowa pharmacist for outstanding contributions to the pharmacy profession and the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA). This award was established in 1979 in honor of IPA’s past Executive Officer, Robert G. Gibbs, who served the association from 1959-1979 and is the highest recognition given to a pharmacist by IPA. In years when the award is presented, a $500 scholarship grant is awarded to an Iowa-based college of pharmacy.

THOMAS R. TEMPLE MENTORSHIP

Wendy Mobley-Bukstein, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, CHWC, NASM-CPT, FAPhA, FADCES, Clive, IA

Wendy Mobley-Bukstein is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Drake University in 1999 and is a certified diabetes care and education specialist, board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist, certified health and wellness coach, and a certified personal trainer. Mobley-Bukstein teaches a medication management elective, co-teaches the advanced diabetes care elective, and coordinates the Intermediate Pharmacy Skills and Applications 2 lecture and lab. She maintains a clinical practice at Primary Health Care East Side Clinic, where she precepts third- and fourthyear student pharmacists, focusing on interprofessional ambulatory care and diabetes as a specialty practice.

In the words of one nominator, “Wendy has dedicated her professional career to mentorship and supporting other pharmacists.” She is active as a chapter advisor for APhA’s Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP), introducing her students to professional organizations and encouraging them to get involved. In 2025, she was awarded Drake University CPHS’ Mentor of the Year, nominated by students and colleagues alike for her outstanding mentorship.

Mobley-Bukstein demonstrates wisdom, humility and kindness—key qualities of the award’s namesake, Tom Temple. She “is not afraid to share the challenges that she has faced and help others overcome their own challenges.”

She “is a consistent cheerleader for everyone around her,” showing up to support her students at conferences and off-campus events. Mobley-Bukstein is a true mentor and well deserving of the Thomas R. Temple Mentorship Award.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Thomas R. Temple Mentorship Award recognizes an individual who has mentored, supported and sponsored pharmacists in a transformative way. The pharmacist for whom the award is named, Tom Temple, inspired and mentored through his career as IPA’s CEO (1979-2011) and beyond. Those who Tom mentored understood the magnitude of his wisdom, leadership and vision, which he effortlessly combined with humility and kindness to always elevate the success of others.

HONORARY PRESIDENT

Greg Johansen, RPh

Cumming, IA

Gregory (Greg) Johansen, BS Pharm, is a registered pharmacist, entrepreneur, and senior executive with more than four decades of experience in community pharmacy and franchise operations. He is the founder and former president of GRX Holdings, LLC, which operates multiple retail, compounding, and long-term care pharmacies in central Iowa. Johansen has also held senior leadership roles with Medicap Pharmacies and Medicine Shoppe International, a Cardinal Health subsidiary, where he led national operations, franchise support, and Medicare Part D preparedness.

Over the course of his career, Johansen has made extensive contributions to IPA, his alma mater, Drake University, and the pharmacy profession. He established scholarships for pharmacy students who travel abroad as part of their academic program, and he gives generously to support the mission of the IPA Foundation. In 2018, he was awarded Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ highest honor, the Lawrence C. and Delores M. Weaver Medal of Honor. The Weaver Medal is awarded annually to an individual who has advanced the college’s education, research or outreach mission for the benefit of human health; has made a substantial impact on the profession of pharmacy; or has provided financial support that has led to strategic change and progress in the college. Additionally, Johansen was awarded IPA’s Champion Advocate Award in 2022, recognizing a member who has made significant contributions to IPA’s advocacy efforts.

DISTINGUISHED YOUNG PHARMACIST

Benjamin (Ben) Miskle, PharmD

Iowa City, IA

Ben Miskle is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the University of Iowa Health Care and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Miskle earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed a psychiatric pharmacy residency at the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Chillicothe, OH.

As one nominator put it, “Dr. Miskle’s pharmacy experience and activities on local and national stages outpace his early career status.” According to his peers, “Miskle is already considered a local and regional pharmacy expert in addiction medicine and psychiatric care,” having published 20 papers and two book chapters on substance use disorders and addiction treatment services. He previously served on the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists’ (AAPP) Substance Use Disorder Committee and has shared his expertise with IPA members through webinars, posters, and podcasts. Additionally, Miskle helped start the Naloxone in Schools project, which provides overdose education and naloxone administration training to community schools and programs. He has helped distribute over 3,000 naloxone kits and educated over 3,300 community members on opioid overdose awareness.

Within the University of Iowa Addiction and Recovery Collaborative (UI ARC), Miskle is an active educator to physicians and pharmacists alike. One nominator stated, “I have witnessed many young faculty members join us at the college; however, none have been as innovative and productive as Ben at this juncture of his career.”

EXCELLENCE IN INNOVATION

Monica Nikseresht, PharmD Glenwood, IA

Monica Nikseresht is a proud third-generation pharmacist. She graduated from Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2021 and returned to her hometown of Glenwood, IA. With the goal of creating a wellness destination for her community, Nikseresht has implemented several clinical services at her family’s Medicap Pharmacy, including point-of-care testing, pharmacogenomic screening, chronic care management, smoking cessation consultations, travel vaccinations, and more. Additionally, she has implemented the Medi-Pak Wellness Program, an appointment-based model offering monthly medication therapy visits, access to preventative healthcare services, and medication packaging for Medicaid patients at no cost to them.

A true innovator, Nikseresht has been at the forefront of standard of care implementation in Iowa, sharing her billing knowledge and experiences with fellow pharmacists. She was one of the first pharmacists in Iowa to become a recognized provider under Iowa Medicaid. In 2024, she was awarded Medicine Shoppe International’s Clinical Innovation Award for her efforts to improve patient care and health outcomes.

Nikseresht looks forward to exploring more opportunities to serve her patients, including expanding into telehealth, establishing a women’s health program, and increasing access to preventative health screenings, making her well deserving of the Excellence in Innovation Award.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Excellence in Innovation Award recognizes pharmacists who have demonstrated significant innovation in their respective practices. The award was developed by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and is funded by Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc.

HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACIST OF THE YEAR

Morgan Herring, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA, West Des Moines, IA

Morgan Herring is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and a Clinical Pharmacist with the Iowa Lutheran Family Medicine Residency Program and UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine – East Des Moines. Herring graduated from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and completed a residency with Mercy Family Pharmacy in Dubuque, IA. She served as faculty at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy before returning to the University of Iowa as faculty in 2012.

A cherished preceptor to family medicine residents, medical students, and pharmacy students, Herring has a sustained record of modeling interdisciplinary care with her physician colleagues. She spends five half-days per week in direct patient care in the clinic setting and rounding with the inpatient medicine team at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Herring has earned the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy’s Collegiate Teacher of the Year and P3 Teacher of the Year awards, as well as the Iowa Lutheran Family Medicine Residency Program’s Faculty of the Year award. Additionally, she has led the University of Iowa’s Pharmacy Educator Preparatory Program for Residents (PEPPR), as Associate Director and then Director, since 2020.

In her practice, Herring manages medication therapy for patients with chronic diseases. She developed her clinic’s CGM workflow and management protocols and trains the medical residents on gestational diabetes management. She also collaborates with the infectious disease, Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT), and MTM teams at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Her many accomplishments and accolades make her well deserving of the Health-System Pharmacist of the Year Award.

The Health-System Pharmacist of the Year Award is a national awards program that recognizes a health-system pharmacist who demonstrates service to the pharmacy profession, contributions to pharmacy programs, cooperation with the entire healthcare team, and service to the community.

PATIENT CARE PARTNER

Primary Health Care (PHC) Central Iowa

Primary Health Care (PHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center serving central Iowa since 1981. PHC provides affordable medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and supportive services—welcoming all people to help improve their quality of life.

PHC strengthens patient care through proactive, teambased collaboration, working closely with physicians, nurses, medical assistants, care coordinators, behavioral health providers, and pharmacy teams to ensure each patient receives seamless, comprehensive care. The PHC team communicates clearly across disciplines, shares timely clinical updates, and participates in huddles and case reviews to align treatment plans. Embodying the values of the Patient Care Partner Award, the PHC team actively seeks input from specialists, social workers, and community partners when complex needs arise. Additionally, they are eager to educate colleagues, support workflow improvements, and bridge communication gaps to elevate the entire care team’s effectiveness and improve patient outcomes.

IPA is grateful for organizations like PHC, the leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Nathan Simpson, MHA, and the interdisciplinary collaboration displayed by Katie Cope, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy, and the entire PHC team.

JERRY KARBELING LEADERSHIP

Stacy Johnson Drake University

Stacy Johnson is a 2027 PharmD/MBA candidate at Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She works as a pharmacy intern at MercyOne West Lakes in West Des Moines, IA. Johnson has served as a student representative on IPA’s Board of Trustees for two years and is involved in a variety of student organizations, including Kappa Psi, Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma, and APhA. Additionally, she served as a legislative intern for Representative Brett Barker in 2025. In the words of one nominator, Johnson’s “academic achievement, leadership experience, and advocacy for the profession are a testament to her commitment to excellence.” Her passion for the profession is seen through her leadership and professional involvement, making her well deserving of the Karbeling Leadership Award.

Volta Adovor University of Iowa

Volta Adovor is a 2027 PharmD candidate at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2023 and works as a pharmacy intern in the health system and retail settings. Adovor is involved in many student organizations, including Iowa Phi Delta Chi-Nu, Phi Lambda Sigma, Student Leadership Council, and the Student Engagement Team. In addition, Adovor is engaged in IPA through the Bill Burke Student Pharmacist Leadership Conference (2024-2025), Legislative Advisory Committee, and Max W. Eggleston Summer Executive Internship Program (2025). In the words of one nominator, Adovor’s “ability to translate leadership into meaningful action [is what distinguishes her the most].” No matter what she is doing, she “approaches every responsibility with professionalism, humility, and purpose,” making her well deserving of the Karbeling Leadership Award.

Kate Gainer, PharmD Clive, IA Individual

Kate Gainer earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy in 2004. Following graduation, she moved to Iowa to complete a community pharmacy residency through Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Medicap Pharmacy in Urbandale, IA. After residency, Gainer was hired by Tom Temple to join the Iowa Pharmacy Association staff, serving as Vice President of Professional Affairs for six years.

Gainer assumed the role of Executive Vice President & CEO on January 1, 2012. Over the course of fourteen years, Gainer led the association through a global pandemic, a new Pharmacy Practice Act and rule rewrite, payment and PBM reform, a headquarters move, and so much more. She forged new partnerships and initiatives when opportunity was present, such as CPESN Iowa and the IPA Executive Fellowship in Association Management. She created three endowments within the IPA Foundation (Temple Leadership, Bill Burke, and Outcomes Innovative Pharmacy) and served in national leadership roles to showcase Iowa as a leader in pharmacy across the country. Gainer became a figurehead for pharmacy’s standard of care regulatory framework, elevating Iowa to the ranks of Idaho and Alaska and driving the profession forward.

Gainer stepped down as CEO in June of 2025 after nearly twenty years of service to the association. She is taking a much-deserved professional pause to spend time with her husband, Bob, and four children.

Gainer’s contributions to the association and profession cannot be overstated. IPA is deeply grateful for her service.

SafeNetRx Grimes, IA Corporate

SafeNetRx is an Iowa-based 501(c)3 established in 2001 as a transparent partnership between the public and non-profit sectors to provide affordable medication access to patients in need. This partnership led to innovations in drug donation, charitable pharmacy, and care for populations with unique pharmacy needs.

Since its inception, SafeNetRx has collected over 800 tons of medication for redistribution to clinics and pharmacies or environmentally safe disposal. Over 170,000 patients have received donated medications and medical supplies from SafeNetRx, valuing over $172 million.

SafeNetRx aims to establish a national drug donation system based on the success of Iowa’s Drug Donation Repository model. Additionally, the organization aims to: collaborate with industry leaders, academia, legislative bodies, and regulatory stakeholders to establish national standards for donated medicines; support clinics, pharmacies, and other health care stakeholders in the delivery of safe, efficient, and effective pharmacy services for underserved populations; and back training, research, and evaluation opportunities to support ongoing innovation in charitable pharmacy services.

Chief Executive Officer Jon-Michael Rosmann is a frequent supporter of IPA events and a gracious host for Board and committee meetings. The Iowa Pharmacy Association is grateful for its continued partnership with SafeNetRx.

Erin Halvorson, CPhT, Ladora, IA

Erin Halvorson, CPhT, although fairly new to pharmacy, has already made an impact on her patients and community. Halvorson has worked as a pharmacy technician for nearly four years and was recently promoted to lead telepharmacy technician for Towncrest Pharmacy’s hybrid location in Van Horne, IA. Over the last four years, her nominators have seen her grow in her role, take on new responsibilities, and mentor new technician trainees. “She has gone from student to teacher in this regard,” they said.

Halvorson is known for her warm smile and genuine care for her patients and coworkers. She is skilled in her ability to see the entire patient, recognizing verbal and non-verbal cues that may affect the individual’s ability to care for themselves or others. She is an advocate for her patients and happy to answer their questions—or refer them to the pharmacist or insurance agent when needed. Halvorson is kind and empathetic, as she is always willing to help her patients with an after-hours delivery.

Additionally, Erin Halvorson is committed to developing her skills. She recently became immunization certified and plans to explore additional training, such as Med Sync or point-of-care testing.

As one nominator put it, “her leadership and trust the patients have in her have greatly contributed to the success of this pharmacy practice,” making her well deserving of the Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award.

Statewide Antimicrobial Stewardship Initiative: A Partnership Between the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy

Objectives: Antimicrobial overuse and antimicrobial resistance are global issues at the forefront of healthcare. Outpatient antibiotic use in Iowa remains high, compared to other US states. The objectives of this project were to: 1) provide educational webinars related to antimicrobial use in outpatient settings; 2) form and facilitate outpatient learning groups; 3) collaborate to provide educational messaging during Antibiotic Awareness week (AAW); 4) utilize CMS resources to identify areas of high outpatient use in Iowa; 5) collect antibiograms from Iowa healthcare facilities.

Methods: Three webinars have been presented and are available for continuing education until 2026. An additional webinar will be presented in June. Social media messaging for AAW demonstrated good engagement during the week. Outpatient learning groups are being formed and antibiograms are being collected. For objective 3, Medicare Part D data by provider and drug from 2022 were used to obtain information on number of beneficiaries receiving an antibiotic, total prescriptions, and day supply provided to beneficiaries. Antibiotic drugs were identified and mapped to CDC drug classes. Prescriptions were assigned to Iowa nursing regions based on coun-

ty of the prescribing provider. A multivariable hierarchical model was used to evaluate variability in antibiotic use across nursing regions in Iowa and associations of other factors contributing to antimicrobial use at the county-drug level, adjusting for county-level demographic, socioeconomic, and healthcare use variables.

Results: AAW messaging across all platforms totaled over 7,673 impressions/views.

Conclusion: This project demonstrates a positive partnership between Iowa Health and Human Services and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy to improve antibiotic prescribing in the state of Iowa.
