The Iowa Pharmacy Association takes great pride in recognizing individuals for their contributions of leadership, patient care, professional involvement and public service. The following awards, presented during IPA’s 2015 Annual Meeting, serve to capture Iowa pharmacy’s spirit of service and its culture of professionalism.

BOWL OF HYGEIA CRAIG CLARK, RPH Craig and his wife, Pam, purchased their community pharmacy in Cedar Rapids in 1981. Over 30 years later, the pharmacy continues to serve the Cedar Rapids area. As a consummate professional who has seen the need to reach beyond his profession to serve his community and his fellow citizens, Craig exemplifies the very spirit of the Bowl of Hygeia. As one nominator said “He treats all people, no matter their age, background or circumstance, with respect. When there is a physical need or project to help out with, he will be there to lend a hand.”

Craig has volunteered at a local free clinic for over 20 years, and was instrumental in establishing a partnership between the clinic and student pharmacists from the University of Iowa. He has served on numerous boards, including the Hiawatha Lions Club, Linn-Mar Booster and Health Services Clubs, and currently two private boards that focus on the needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His extensive involvement in the Youth for Christ organization has benefitted the lives of thousands of young people in the Cedar Rapids area.

The Bowl of Hygeia Award is designed to provide special recognition to a pharmacist who has made considerable contributions in the area of community service. Co-sponsored by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and APhA, the award is part of a national awards program which recognizes one pharmacist from each state for outstanding community service. The award consists of a handsome mahogany plaque featuring the “Bowl of Hygeia” carved in bronze. The name of the recipient of this award is also included on a master plaque which is permanently displayed at IPA headquarters.

The Bowl of Hygeia is open to any Iowa pharmacist who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to community service. Selection is made by a committee of civic leaders from throughout the state, and selection is unknown until the evening of the IPA award banquet.

ROBERT G. GIBBS DISTINGUISHED PHARMACIST ED MAIER, RPH

Edward L Maier worked at Griffin Pharmacy from eighth grade through college and as a pharmacist after graduating from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1970. He purchased the pharmacy in 1981 and sold it when he retired in 2013. Ed has been on the IPA Board of Directors, President of IPA, Chairman of the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation and numerous committees. He co-chaired the Unification Task Force forming IPA from the Iowa Society of Hospital Pharmacists and the Iowa Pharmacists Association. Ed was appointed to the Iowa Board of Health in 2001 and the Iowa Board of Pharmacy in 2008. He has just completed a term as Chair of the Board of Pharmacy and will serve until May of 2017. He was one of the first to join the Iowa Center for Pharmaceutical Care and an original investor in Outcomes MTM. He continues his interest in pharmaceutical care through board involvement in the community practice model project. Ed represents the best of community pharmacy practice and is a consummate example in giving back to the profession.

The Robert G. Gibbs Distinguished Pharmacist Award has recognized pharmacists for outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacy Association. In years when the award is presented, the recipient receives a recognition plaque and their name is included on a master plaque at the IPA headquarters. In addition, a $500 scholarship grant is awarded to an Iowa-based college of pharmacy. The Distinguished Pharmacist Award, the highest recognition provided to a pharmacist by IPA, was initiated in 1979 in honor of IPA’s past Executive Officer, Robert G. Gibbs, who served the Association from 1959-1979.

HONORARY PRESIDENT BRUCE ALEXANDER, PHARMD Bruce Alexander received his BS in Pharmacy in 1974 from Drake University and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota in 1976. Bruce retired in 2014 after serving 37 years at the VA in Iowa City as Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Psychiatry and Associate Chief of Pharmacy. His clinical work was in inpatient psychiatry and he had a consultative practice in outpatient mental health, where he served as a preceptor for ambulatory care pharmacy residents and as a project collaborator. Bruce taught as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Iowa for 29 years in varying capacities. In addition to his practice and academia experiences, Bruce has been a long-time member of IPA, and has served on the Board of Trustees, the Health-Systems Liaison Board, and various other state advisory councils. He has also been an instrumental asset to the Iowa Pharmacy Recovery Network, serving as the Chair of IPRN since its inception.

IPA’s Honorary President is selected on an annual basis to recognize a lengthy and sustained commitment of support for the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the profession of pharmacy in Iowa. The “Honorary President” is selected by the IPA House of Delegates and serves as a voting member of the IPA Board of Trustees for one year before receiving this special recognition at the Annual Banquet.

DISTINGUISHED YOUNG PHARMACIST ANGIE SPANNAGEL, PHARMD, BCACP Angie Spannagel was selected in recognition of her commitment to advancement of pharmacy practice, including leadership, research, clinical expertise, and mentorship. Angie is the primary preceptor at Osterhaus Pharmacy where she mentors students from five colleges of pharmacy as well as University of Iowa PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residents. Angie holds positions as adjunct faculty at the University of Iowa, Drake University and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Angie’s nominator stated: “In this capacity she has gone above and beyond by regularly hosting students at every stage of development, from introductory to advance pharmacy practice experiences.” Angie continues to demonstrate the importance of professional involvement by reinvigorating the Dubuque Area Pharmacy Association.

Angie’s nominator stated: “Angie has laid the groundwork for local pharmacists to work together, build a community of colleagues, and advance the practice through innovative forums.”

The Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year Award is a national awards program sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual and state pharmacy associations. Created in 1987, the award is designed to fulfill a twofold purpose: To encourage young pharmacists’ participation in association and community activities and to annually recognize one young pharmacist in each state for involvement and dedication to the practice of pharmacy. To be nominated for this award, you must be in your first 10 years of practice.

EXCELLENCE IN INNOVATION RYAN JACOBSEN, PHARMD, BCPS Ryan Jacobsen is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and Clinical Coordinator for Ambulatory Care Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy where he has been instrumental in helping advance ambulatory care clinical practice and interprofessional education. Ryan was recently elected to serve on the Iowa Pharmacy Association Board of Trustees. Ryan’s nominator states: “Ryan has been a key contributor to advancing the practice of ambulatory care pharmacy at UIHC and in Iowa.

He is a leader in implementing collaborative practice agreements and novel practice areas for pharmacy. As a preceptor for countless pharmacy students he has set the bar ‘high’ for learners and is a terrific example of what a pharmacist can do to develop a progressive practice.”

The Excellence in Innovation Award recognizes pharmacists who have demonstrated significant innovations in their respective practices.

HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACIST OF THE YEAR DAVE WEETMAN, RPH, MS Dave Weetman serves as the Director for Inpatient Care Services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), and has served in numerous management roles with UIHC for nearly 20 years. Dave serves an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and coordinates and teaches in the Health-System Management class. He is an active member of ASHP, serving as faculty advisor for the College’s student chapter. He has served as past chair and vice-chair of ASHP’s Pharmacy Management Council and has represented Iowa numerous times as a delegate. He is currently on the IPA Board of Trustees. Dave’s nominator stated: “Dave is passionate about pharmacy practice in the health-system environment. He is actively engaged in multidisciplinary hospital committees, such as P&T and the Safety Oversight Team. He is a strong proponent of residency programs, and serves as the coordinator for the Health System Pharmacy Administrative Residency. He is a great leader and role model.”

The Health-System Pharmacist of the Year Award is a national awards program. This award is presented to a health-system pharmacist who meets the following criteria: service to the profession of pharmacy, and specifically hospital pharmacy; contributions to pharmacy programs; cooperation with the entire health care team; and service to the community.

PATIENT CARE PARTNER AWARD STEVEN BASCOM, MD Dr. Steven Bascom is very supportive of utilizing pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to care for inpatients at Guthrie County Hospital (GCH). Dr. Bascom consistently sets an example for the other members on the GCH medical staff by demonstrating how to effectively take advantage of the pharmacists’ expertise to assist in providing patient care. Dr. Bascom is a strong advocate of collaborative drug therapy management protocols with pharmacists. In particular, he was instrumental in the adoption of the Admission Home Medication Orders at GCH. His nominator stated: “Dr. Bascom fully understands the importance of medication reconciliation and promotes working as a team by discussing medication reconciliation issues directly with the pharmacists.”

The Patient Care Partner Award was designed to recognize an innovative and creative practice that has demonstrated an enhanced level of care in an Iowa community, and brings health care providers together to better serve their patients. The award will be presented to a physician, medical practice, clinic, or other health care provider who has developed a patient care program that works cooperatively with patients and pharmacists to optimize care. The award is sponsored by Eisai.

IPA APPRECIATION AWARDS INDIVIDUAL: MIKE PURSEL, RPH, MBA, CHP Mike Pursel is the Director of Field Medical & Advocacy Relations for Sanofi Biosurgery, joining the company in December 2014. While Mike has 18 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry with significant portion spent at Teva Pharmaceuticals, he has also worked 8 years in association management and 36 years as a pharmacist. Mike has always been a strong advocate for IPA and the IPA Foundation over the years. Not only has he been able to garner support from Teva Pharmaceuticals for the Leadership Pharmacy conference and endowment, he and his wife, Terry, have provided personal support to create an IPA Foundation named scholarship at Drake University. IPA has been fortunate to have the upmost and unwavering support of a pharmacist that cares so deeply about the leadership development for the future of the profession.

CORPORATE: IOWA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) partners with local public health, policymakers, health care providers, business and many others to fulfill our mission of promoting and protecting the health of Iowans. The IPA Board of Trustees recognizes the Iowa Department of Public Health’s partnership with the Association and the profession of pharmacy in developing innovative and collaborative programs around medication safety and effectiveness. IPA is grateful for this collaborative relationship with IDPH and its dedicated staff. This collaboration has been important in pharmacists playing a vital part in the evolving health care delivery system.

The Iowa Pharmacy Association Appreciation Award was created in 1988 to recognize individuals and corporations for their support of organized pharmacy in the state of Iowa.

GENERATION RX AWARD LAWRENCE FLECKENSTEIN, PHARMD Dr. Fleckenstein was Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacokinetics at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy from 1991 to 2014 and is currently Professor Emeritus. Dr. Fleckenstein has been an IPA member since 1992. He resides in Iowa City with wife Barbara. In selecting Dr. Fleckenstein as IPA’s 2015 recipient of the GenerationRx Award the Board of Trustees recognizes his efforts in supporting the many DEA Take Back events over the past several years. He donated his time and effort to help Generation Rx and the Iowa City Police Department as they partnered with Iowa City Recycling Center to collect medications and sharps for proper disposal. His nominator stated, “He has always graciously volunteered and is willing to help in any way necessary. He serves as a valuable resource when community members have questions that students are unable to answer.”

The Generation Rx Award is a national awards program sponsored by Cardinal Health. This award is designed to recognize a pharmacist who has demonstrated excellence in community-based prescription drug abuse prevention. The award is intended to recognize outstanding efforts within the pharmacy community to raise awareness of this serious public health problem. It is also intended to encourage educational prevention efforts aimed at patients, youth, and other members of the community. This award includes a $500 donation to the charity of the recipient’s choice.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR NEISHA BENSON, CPHT Neisha Benson is currently a System Administrator and Lead Technician for Hy-Vee’s Central Fulfillment Center in Des Moines. She accepted the challenge to train pharmacy personal on a new pharmacy processing software. This was a huge undertaking not only because of the number of stores, but many of the pharmacy staff had been on the old software suite for several years. When that job was complete, instead of going back to her community store, she became focused on a job at Hy-Vee’s new Central Fulfillment Center. She has used her knowledge of workflow to make the facility more efficient. Her nominator stated: “she exemplifies the skills of a great technician. She sees that with the changes in workflow that technicians will have a growing role in the medication dispensing process. She seeks other opportunities within the company to help grow professional and at the same time becomes a valuable asset to her employer.”

The Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award recognizes a pharmacy technician in Iowa who has demonstrated outstanding involvement in the Iowa Pharmacy Association and enthusiasm for the profession of pharmacy in Iowa.

KARBELING LEADERSHIP Drake University

NATALIE ROY PHARMD CANDIDATE 2016 Natalie Roy is currently a fourth-year PharmD student at Drake University.

In addition to her varied internship experiences, Natalie served as Legislative Intern for Representative John Forbes where she researched and assisted in developing health care legislation. She also co-founded an interprofessional group of Drake and Des Moines University students who seek collaboration through education and real-world problem solving.

An active IPA member, Natalie has participated in the Bill Burke Student Leadership Conference, served IPA committees, and was the 2014 Max W. Eggleston Executive Intern. Natalie has demonstrated exceptional leadership both within the college and the profession, being selected for several professional activities and honors. Natalie’s nominator stated: “She is a hard-working student and understands the balance of academics along with professional and community outreach activities.”

In tribute to the leadership and service provided by the late Jerry Karbeling, the IPA Foundation has established a special award for student pharmacists at Iowa’s two Colleges of Pharmacy. The award is designed to recognize two student pharmacists (one from Drake University and one from the University of Iowa) for their contributions to professional organizations and the political process. Each College of Pharmacy submits one nomination to the IPA Board of Trustees recognizing the most deserving P3 student who has made significant contributions to the political process and professional organizations as a student pharmacist.

ALYSSA BILLMEYER PHARMD CANDIDATE 2016 Alyssa Billmeyer is pursing her Doctorate of Pharmacy and Masters of Public Health degrees at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, and is expecting to graduate in May 2016. She has been an active member of IPA, participating in Legislative Day, Capitol Screenings, the Bill Burke Conference, and serves as a member of the Health-System Liaison Board.

She has also been an active member in APhA-ASP, the Iowa Student Leadership Council, Phi Lambda Sigma, and the Graduate and Professional Student Government at the University of Iowa. She has dedicated much of her time advocating to help advance the profession of pharmacy. Alyssa has been politically active and has been called a number of times to represent the college at meetings, on committees and at the state house. POSTER PRESENTATION EVALUATION OF COMMUNITY PHARMACIST-MANAGED TRANSITIONS OF CARE ON HOSPITAL READMISSION RATES OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of community pharmacist-managed transitions of care on 30 day readmission rates of patients identified to be at high risk for hospital readmission.

METHODS Patients were identified to be at high-risk for hospital readmission according to the BOOST risk assessment tool.

The community pharmacist obtained patient lists from 3 floors (medical, surgical, and cardiovascular units) marked with BOOST risk factors by the charge nurse every morning. The community pharmacist would then see these patients and assess for issues regarding medication safety, compliance and access and resolve these through interventions. Patient interaction was then charted in the hospital electronic health record and follow-up was done as necessary with social work, inpatient pharmacy, and nursing. 30-day hospital readmission rates for the patients seen by the community pharmacist were then compared to the readmission rates for the patients that were marked as high risk for hospital readmission, but the community pharmacist did not have time to see over a 3-month period (Oct 7th, 2013 - January 6th, 2014).

RESULTS Number of readmissions and 30 day readmission rates were recorded and calculated for high risk patients that were seen by the community pharmacist and high risk patients identified but not seen. The high risk patients that were seen (n=156) had 27 hospital readmissions by 22 high risk patients. The high risk patients that were not able to be seen (n=104) had 38 hospital readmissions by 31 high risk patients. This resulted in a 17.3% 30-day readmission rate in high risk patients seen by the community pharmacist compared to 36.5% 30-day readmission rate in high risk patients not seen by the community pharmacist.

CONCLUSION Being seen by a community pharmacist is associated with a significantly lower likelihood of a hospital readmission (p<0.01). A community pharmacist was able to smoothly transition as an integral player in a transitions of care model. Further expansion of this project to bedside delivery of outpatient medication(s) is currently underway.

The Poster Presentation Award recognizes one original project each year that advances the practice of pharmacy in Iowa. Poster abstracts are submitted prior to the IPA Annual Meeting and are utilized to judge award nominees. The final award selection is based on the overall poster presentation. Posters are judged on originality and innovation, reproducibility, impact on the profession, presentation and methodology.

OUTGOING PRESIDENT RECOGNITION JOHN SWEGLE, PHARMD, BCACP MASON CITY John Swegle served as the 135th President of the Iowa Pharmacy Association. John is a Clinical Pharmacist with the Mercy Family Residency Program and is an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. John is known for his quiet leadership style and passion for patient care.

Prior to serving as president, Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s involvement in IPA included a term on the Board of Trustees, a past participant of Leadership Pharmacy, and serving on numerous committees and task forces including serving as chair of the Professional Affairs Committee.

As president, John has traveled not only throughout the state of Iowa representing the profession, but has attended numerous conferences throughout the country. He has taken time out of his professional and personal life to meet with legislators, health policy makers, state officials, other state association presidents, representatives from the pharmaceutical industry, college faculty, student pharmacists, and IPA members.

The membership, Board of Trustees and staff of IPA would like to thank John and his wife Sarah for their leadership and their personal sacrifices this past year.
