A Message From the Iowa PGA

Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA Executive Director

The Iowa PGA has taken over the administration of the GIVE Foundation – Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere. This wonderful Foundation started in 2007 as a partnership with the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, Iowa City VA and the Iowa PGA. During those nearly 20 years, we have assisted over 2,500 deserving Veterans through the game of golf to make their lives better. We have expanded to Terrace Hills in Altoona and Grand Falls in Larchwood. We have three annual fundraisers along with two GIVE Veterans Graduate Scrambles along with a wonderful dinner. This program became everyone else’s PGA HOPE. If you are interested in donating money, clubs, time or if you facility would like to allow our GIVE graduates, free or reduced golf, please contact me. The Iowa Golf Council, a c(3) non-profit corporation – made up of the four main golf associations in the state – Iowa Golf Association, CMAA (Club Managers) – Tall Corn Chapter, Iowa Chapter of the GCSAA and the Iowa PGA chartered TEConomy to do another Economic Impact Study for the golf industry in Iowa. We did one in 2005, 2015 and now for 2025. The golf industry in Iowa is over a billion-dollar industry growing from $816 million in 2015. Over $117 million is paid in local and state taxes. Lots of wonderful information is in this document. The Council will begin doing some asks in Des Moines for tourism dollars as well as starting the process to have a golf specific license plate for the state of Iowa. Copy and paste this into your browser to review this study - https://iowapga.com/economic-impact-study/ For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine sends to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319648-0026 as well. Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

President’s Report with JR Millar

JR Millar, PGA | Lake Bracken Country Club | President

Ready or not, Summer’s here, This has been quite the past month and it appears Mother Nature is not a golfer. I hope everyone survived the storms with minimal damage and limited interruption to business. The rain has been much needed, although it could come a little slower. The golf course at Lake Bracken is beautiful and green just as we approach the summer season. Junior golf camps and programs should be in full swing by now. We are hosting our local Drive, Chip, and Putt qualifier on Thursday, June 25th and have close to 60 participants. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the juniors that have already qualified for the next stage of DCP and wish good luck to everyone that is still awaiting their qualifier. I know that I have mentioned this before, but this program was founded right here in the IOWA PGA SECTION!!! I truly hope that everyone shares in the same level of pride that I feel for our section continually being on the forefront as it relates to juniors and growth of the game initiatives. On the tournament front, I would like to remind everyone in the section to sign up for all section championships that you may be eligible for. While all events are important, these should be a priority to play year after year. The main reason to support these championships is because it directly affects your fellow professionals. The higher the number of participants that we have is directly proportional to the number of qualifiers that we can send to the National events. I truly believe that we have some of the best players in the country right here in the Iowa Section, so let’s all do our part to send as many of them as we can to the next level. In the upcoming months, the officers will be meeting with all the prospective candidates for our new Secretary of the PGA. During this process, we will determine which candidate(s) will best represent not only the best interest of all PGA members, but also the Iowa Section. This will entail multiple calls first, followed by the Super Regionals in Houston, where we will get to speak with each candidate and their team in person. Finally, we will cast our vote at the National PGA Meeting in November. In the upcoming months, the officers will be meeting with all the prospective candidates for our new Secretary of the PGA. District 8 Director, Aaron Krueger, PGA

Dear Iowa PGA Members & Staff, I hope your 2026 summer is off to a great start! Hopefully, we all have an outstanding month of weather in June that provides full tee sheets and strong business! Help me congratulating Phil Anderson, PGA from Hazeltine National of the Minnesota PGA Section. Phil was recently hired as the Chief Operating Officer of the PGA of America. He is one of the most passionate, intelligent and strategic PGA professionals I have been around and will be a tremendous asset to our association. Alongside CEO Terry Clark (another leader from District 8), I’m certain that Phil will lead our PGA staff to great things. With Phil’s new role as COO, my Incoming Director term was shortened, and I was sworn in as the voting District 8 Director in late April. I will serve the rest of Phil’s term on the PGA board, which goes to the Annual Meeting in November. I will then take a three-year term as the District 8 Director. As a District Director, I believe that open and consistent communication is essential to aligning the PGA’s national initiatives with the unique needs of our sections and members. That said, there are many sensitive topics that the board discusses that cannot be shared openly. In those situations, please trust I will serve our section, district, association and membership in the best way possible. The PGA of America exists to serve the member and grow the game. This isn’t just a fun tagline, I can attest that is the mission that drives our association, staff and leadership. As many of you are aware, the PGA of America announced a leadership transition on May 22. While change always brings reflection, it also brings opportunity. We remain focused on the bright future ahead for our Association and Membership. Continuing on the governance side, campaign season is now underway for the election of the next Secretary of the PGA of America. The five candidates are Jared Barnes, PGA (Utah PGA Section), Paige Cribb, PGA (Carolinas PGA Section), Larry Kelley, PGA (New England PGA Section), Russ Libby, PGA (New England PGA Section), and Steve Parker, PGA (Southern Ohio PGA Section).

on), Russ Libby, PGA (New England PGA Section), and Steve Parker, PGA (Southern Ohio PGA Section). The election will take place during the PGA Annual Meeting this November, and I encourage all Members to stay engaged throughout the process as the candidates share their vision for the future of our Association. I will travel to the Super Regional meetings in August with the Iowa PGA officers and Greg Mason to meet the candidates. Championships remain the largest revenue driver for our association. This year’s PGA Championship at Aronimink was a tremendous success in nearly every measure. We are looking forward to the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club within District 8! This year’s KPMG is likely to set many records. I hope many of our members can make it to Hazeltine to see a major championship contested in our District! I am honored to serve the members of the Iowa PGA, District 8, and the PGA of America, I look forward to connecting with you at our upcoming section meetings and events. I welcome your ideas, questions, and feedback at any time. Thank you for all that you do to grow the game and impact others! Sincerely,

Aaron Krueger, PGA District 8 Director, PGA of America Board of Directors General Manager, Wakonda Club

Huge thank you to Sterling Cut Glass for Supplying the Iowa PGA Professionals, Iowa PGA Junior and Pee Wee Tour with some awesome looking trophies. Wihout your support of the Section and Foundation we wouldn’t have the hardware to pass out.

Thanks to our 2026 Season Long Sponsors The Iowa PGA is pleased to have the following corporate partners involved with the 2026 Section, Junior Tour and Foundation events and activities. Advocating for Turfgrass on Capitol Hill: Reflections from National Golf Day

Matt Beatty | Executive Director of Iowa Turfgrass Institute Washington, DC – As we move into the heart of the season, I know many of our members are fully immersed in the day-to-day work that keeps Iowa’s golf courses, sports fields, lawn care operations, and green spaces performing at a high level. While you’re busy managing crews, weather, tournaments, customer expectations, and everything else that comes with the summer months, our focus at the association and institute level shifts heavily toward events, advocacy, planning, and member outreach. In May, I again had the opportunity to represent Iowa during National Golf Day in Washington, D.C. Alongside golf industry leaders from across the country, we met with congressional staff to discuss issues that directly impact our members and facilities. This was my second visit to Capitol Hill, and having experienced National Golf Day in 2025, it allowed me to be even better prepared for the meetings. These conversations matter, and it is important that our industry continues to have a voice at the national level. Changes take time, and there is value to providing a consistent message to our representatives. Back here in Iowa, we’re already hard at work preparing for a busy stretch of summer and fall events across all of our associations and the Iowa Turfgrass Institute. Whether it’s educational programming, field days, networking opportunities, or planning for the 2026 Iowa Turfgrass Conference, there is a great deal happening behind the scenes to continue delivering value to our members and industry partners. One item we’re especially excited about is an upcoming IPLCA Snow Removal Workshop that we are currently developing for August. This event will be open to anyone interested in snow and ice management, and we believe it will provide valuable education and discussion heading into the winter 18 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Summer Issue

season. More details will be coming soon, so keep an eye on your email and association communications. Registration is open for the Field Day Classic at Ballard Golf and Country Club on July 15. Limited spots are available for this one. Soon, information will be available for the annual Field & Demo Day at the ISU Horticulture Research Station on September 1. I encourage you to take the time to attend, as Dr. Thoms and Dr. Law work hard to provide first-hand opportunities to see research that is taking place for all aspects of the turfgrass industry. One of the best parts of this time of year is the opportunity to get out around the state and connect with members where they work every day. Over the coming months, I’m looking forward to visiting facilities, attending events, and continuing conversations with many of you in person. If I’m in your area, I hope to stop by and see your operation firsthand. Those visits and conversations are invaluable in helping us better understand the challenges and opportunities our members are facing. Thank you for everything you do to support Iowa’s turfgrass and green industry. Your work does not go unnoticed, and it is a privilege to advocate for and support this profession every day. I hope to see many of you at upcoming events this summer and fall.

Tour Grind Illini alumnus Brian Campbell anticipates defense of his John Deere Classic title Written by: George McNeilly Brian Campbell’s story is one of grit and perseverance. Once a collegiate star at Illinois and a regular contender on the elite amateur circuit, the 33-year-old native of Newport Beach, California navigated a start-and-stop journey to the PGA Tour largely defined by injury. Finally, after seven years on the Korn Ferry Tour (KFT), he reaped the fruits of his labors last year, winning twice, including a victory at the John Deere Classic (JDC). Yet, even last year Campbell played hurt. “I felt like I was hitting the ball with one arm,” said Campbell, who will defend his title, July 2-5, at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, near the Quad Cities. “I wasn’t 100% physically, but it allowed me to be 100% mentally…I was just focused on hitting every fairway I could. There are a few demanding tee shots. And if you take care of those, you can attack the rest of the course.” Campbell won last year’s JDC on the first hole of a sudden death playoff with Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo after both players finished regulation at 18-under par. On the playoff hole (No. 18) Campbell, one of the shortest hitters on Tour, fired a 286-yard drive down the middle of the fairway and stuck his 192-yard second shot to within 16 feet of the cup. Playing second, Grillo hit his tee shot in the right rough, flew his 168-yard pitching wedge approach over the green and failed to get up-and-down. Two putts later, Campbell was doing his victory interview with CBS’ Amanda Balionis. It had been 10 years removed from Campbell’s first Deere, as an amateur on a sponsor exemption. What does Campbell feel when he anticipates his return to the Quad Cities? “I love the area. I love the farm feel of it. It takes me back to college.” And Deere Run? “Excitement,” he said. “I just love the course. Can’t wait to get out there. Picturing the finishing holes, where so much can happen. It brings back amazing memories.” Campbell also loves the number of Illini fans who were cheering him on at Deere Run. “It was pretty incredible to have that many people on your side,” he said. They’re sure to be back in even greater numbers. His victory at the JDC was his second of 2025. The first came at the VidantaWorld Mexico Open in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where he defeated Aldrich Potgieter of South Africa on the first hole of sudden death. That triumph occurred in February of 2025, qualifying him for last year’s Masters. His Deere victory, in July, got him an invitation to this year’s Augusta National competition. Unsurprisingly, Campbell said his experience at Augusta was “incredible. It’s Disneyland for golf only so much better. We got there early, our family stayed in a house 24 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Summer Issue

not far away [from the course], and we got to play the course on Saturday and Sunday when it was quiet.” He finished T-32 with a 4-under par 68 in his final round. Campbell said his injuries started during the 2020 COVID-19 break when he strained his right hamstring and glute. “I had no strength in my right leg,” he said. In favoring the leg, he hurt his neck, shoulder, left arm, left elbow, left thumb and left index finger. “It’s all one piece.” In the 2020 KFT season, he had only one top-10 finish; he missed the entire 2021 KFT slate, most of the 2022 campaign and recorded only two top-10s in 2023. Everything changed in 2024 after he finally got relatively healthy. He made 21 of 25 cuts on the KFT, had seven top 10 finishes, made $521,038 and earned his PGA Tour status. That success set up his 2025 campaign, although the injury bug had crept back in by the time July’s Deere rolled around. Campbell competed in the FedExCup Playoffs last year, making it through the BMW Championship. He played two fall events then shut it down Oct. 9, giving himself a good two months to recover physically. With help from his college coach, Illini legend Mike Small, he made a few minor adjustments to his game and now, he said, “When I hit balls, I don’t hurt.” The result has been more distance, which now has caused him to hit the ball too far, resulting in a lot of missed cuts early in the year. “I’ve been hitting it 285 [instead of 277, 180th place on Tour] but two or three times a round I’ll hit it 290 to 320…It’s affecting my caddie.” Not that long ago, winning on the PGA Tour used to mean more than it does today. A two-year exemption. First dibs on which events to play on the circuit, most of which had 156-player fields. The luxury of choosing one’s own schedule and not playing only in tournaments where openings are available. But while the Tour has always been a meritocracy, recent changes in qualification criteria for elevated events means fewer playing opportunities for those below the shrinking FedExCup season standings cutline, where Campbell found himself this year as a result of several missed cuts. For example, this year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Campbell showed up as an alternate for the 72-player Signature event and didn’t get into the tournament until Keegan Bradley withdrew. As luck would have it, Campbell’s pro-am partner was Charles Barkley, the NBA Hall of Famer turned TV analyst for all things basketball who happens to love golf. “This sport is different and challenging because you have to earn your keep every year without any guarantees,” Barkley said. “They are under enormous pressure. [Campbell] is a really nice guy, helpful, courteous and he was very engaging with the players in our group, rather than just doing his own thing.

Players who sit atop the Official World Golf Rankings [OWGR] always will drive attendance, viewership and revenue. But for longtime golf fans, a door seemed always to be open to players like Campbell to stay around a while. The magic of the Deere is that it continues, for now, to serve as a pathway to success just as it did for Jordan Spieth, Brian Harman, and Sepp Straka. It also offers a chance for a comeback, perfectly demonstrated by former U.S. Open winner Lucas Glover, who went a decade without winning until he won the JDC in 2021. For Campbell, the Deere is meaningful and not only because he received that long-ago exemption to a tournament in the state where he went to college. “It’s where Jordan [Spieth] got started. It’s like a mini signature event in my eyes,” Campbell added. “I’ve always thought of it as a really special event where I’ve watched the best players in the world play and win, and then [fellow Illini alumnus and three-time Deere winner] Steve Stricker do his thing.” George McNeilly is an award-winning broadcaster and writer who has covered professional golf, the Olympics on four continents, and 17 Super Bowls. He spent 11 years as a senior ESPN executive and currently teaches Sports Business Models at Full Sail University in Florida when not out on the PGA Tour. Barry Cronin contributed to this report.

HED: Carrie Underwood to Headline John Deere Classic Concert The fourth year of the John Deere Classic’s “Concerts on the Course” series will feature country music superstar Carrie Underwood (Saturday, July 4) and popular country group Old Dominion (Sunday, July 5) at TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities area. After she won the popular American Idol TV talent competition in 2003, Underwood’s first album, Some Hearts, sold 11 million units. Over the years, her 10 albums have sold 95 million units, and she continues to sell out arena tours across North America and the U.K. Underwood has recorded 29 No. 1 singles, and won 8 Grammy Awards, 16 Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards (including three for Entertainer of the Year) and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 2008. PGA Golf Management

The University of Nebraska PGA Golf Management Program: An Outstanding Pathway for High School Golfers

Introduction High school golf coaches, parents, PGA Professionals and other junior golf leaders often play a significant role in helping student-athletes explore future educational and career opportunities. While many golfers dream of playing competitively in college, others are interested in careers within the golf industry itself. For those students who want to work in golf or do both play and work, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s PGA Golf Management (PGM) Program provides a unique and nationally recognized pathway to a degree and PGA Membership. The University of Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management Program is one of only 16 accredited PGA Golf Management university programs by the PGA of America. The program combines business education, golf instruction, industry experience, and professional development to prepare students for careers throughout the golf industry. Graduates leave the program with a bachelor’s degree, extensive internship experience, and eligibility to earn PGA of America Class A membership. For all junior golf leaders, understanding the Nebraska PGM Program can help guide student-athletes toward a rewarding future in golf. What Makes the Nebraska PGA Golf Management Program Unique? The Nebraska PGM Program combines academic coursework with the professional training required by the PGA of America. Students learn not only how to play and teach the game, but also how to manage golf facilities, operate businesses, lead teams, and serve customers. The program offers students the opportunity to study topics such as: • • • • • • • •

Golf instruction and coaching Business management Marketing and sales Club operations Event and tournament management Hospitality management Turfgrass management Golf technology and club fitting

Students complete a minimum of 120 credit hours and choose academic pathways that interest them such as business, hospitality, leadership, entrepreneurship and anything else the student would like to study. This combination allows graduates to develop a broad skill set that is valuable across many sectors of the golf industry or specialize in areas that interest them.

One of the strongest features of the program is its integration of PGA curriculum requirements directly into the university experience. Students progress through PGA Golf Management levels while completing their degree, making them highly competitive candidates for employment after graduation. Experiential Learning and Industry Preparation The Nebraska PGM Program places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Students are required to complete 16 months of paid internship experience before graduation. These internships occur in a variety of golf-industry settings and often take students to some of the most respected facilities in the country. Recent internship placements have included Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pinehurst Resort, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Acushnet, London Links, Bellerive Country Club, Augusta and more. These internship experiences allow students to apply classroom concepts in real-world environments. They gain experience in customer service, tournament operations, merchandising, instruction, golf shop management, and facility operations. By graduation, students have already developed professional networks and practical experience that many graduates in other fields do not possess. Students Continue to Compete The PGA Golf Management Program at Nebraska runs an extensive player development program unlike any other. Students can receive instruction from the 4 PGA Professional staff, along with private instruction from many local legends like Jim White, PGA; Mike Shuchart, PGA; Steve Friesen, PGA; and more. Top instructors from around the world are also brought in to work with students. The program also incorporates extensive use of modern golf technology. Students learn with industry-leading tools such as TrackMan, GCQuad launch monitors, Full Swing simulators, force plates, PuttView systems, K-Vest motion analysis, and other performance technologies used by today’s coaches and golf professionals. Students also have opportunities to earn certifications on many of these technologies. For high school golfers interested in coaching, teaching, club fitting, or player development, exposure to these technologies provides a significant advantage. The student Player Lounge features 4 simulators and a few putting greens that incorporate all this technology.

Lastly, students continue to compete by participating in up to 20 events per semester. There are local PGA Golf Management tournaments where students compete for credit they can use to purchase equipment, apparel and golf technologies. These events also qualify students for the travel team which competes against the other PGA Golf Management Schools in intercollegiate golf. This last year students competed in Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, and more. Why Junior Golf Leaders Should Promote the Program Many high school golfers love the game but may not have aspirations of competing at the NCAA Division I level or pursuing professional playing careers. The Nebraska PGM Program offers these students an alternative path that allows them to remain involved in golf, continue to complete, all while building a sustainable career. The program is particularly well-suited for students who: • • • • • •

Enjoy working with people Have leadership potential Are interested in teaching and coaching Like business and entrepreneurship Want a career centered around golf Seek hands-on learning experiences

Admission requirements include acceptance to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and evidence of golf ability, typically demonstrated through a verified handicap of 12 or lower or equivalent documentation from a PGA professional or high school golf coach. This requirement helps ensure students have the playing background necessary to succeed in the program. Career Opportunities for Graduates Graduates of the Nebraska PGA Golf Management Program pursue careers across many areas of the golf industry. Common career paths include: • • • • • • • • • • •

PGA Head Professional Assistant Golf Professional Director of Golf Teaching Professional Golf Coach Tournament Director Club Manager Golf Sales Representative Equipment and Club Fitting Specialist Golf Operations Manager Resort and Hospitality Manager

The combination of business education, PGA training, and extensive internship experience provides graduates with flexibility as their careers evolve. Some remain in golf operations throughout their careers, while others transition into equipment sales, marketing, player development, or executive leadership roles within the golf industry. Conclusion The University of Nebraska–Lincoln PGA Golf Management Program represents one of the most comprehensive educational opportunities available for students interested in careers in golf. By blending academics, professional training, technology, and extensive internship experiences, the

the program prepares graduates to become leaders within the golf industry. For junior golf leaders, the program provides an excellent option to recommend to student-athletes who love the game and want to build a career around it. Whether a student dreams of becoming a PGA professional, golf coach, club manager, or industry executive, the Nebraska PGM Program offers a proven pathway toward those goals. As the golf industry continues to grow and evolve, programs like Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management major will remain vital in developing the next generation of golf professionals and leaders.
