Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

Hello Friends:

Yes, I’m borrowing that greeting from PGA of America Hall of Famer Jim Nantz. March came in like a lion and it seems like it will exit like a lion as well. From 80 degree days to a Blizzard and back to another 80 degree day, Iowa and Illinois weather remains unpredictable. One thing that is predictable is the Masters in April at Augusta National. While many of us may never get to go to the Masters tournament and most certainly not get an opportunity to play there, that doesn’t mean your junior golfer should be shut out.
The Iowa PGA is proud to have created the Drive, Chip, and Putt competition for our juniors. From its humble beginnings, it is now a Nationally recognized annual competition. We personally host over 20 local qualifying sites in Iowa and West Central IL. This is a completely FREE event. As you progress through local, sub-regional, and regional qualifying, the final stop is the crown jewel of golf, Augusta National. The finalists from around the country are invited to compete on the Sunday prior to the Masters in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete on this storied course while being televised to a national audience. Pretty cool if you ask me.
The Iowa PGA Junior Tour is an elite tournament series with events all throughout Iowa and West Central IL. There are well over 1,000 participants on the tour. This is a great way to start your competitive career or just simply have the opportunity to play several of our magnificent courses. Contact Tess Goudy, Jacob Hesner or Blake Newell in the Iowa PGA office with any questions and/or information on how to sign up your junior golfer(s).
While it has been a long winter, I am personally dusting off my sticks and looking forward to our Professional series of tournaments on Mondays. I highly encourage you to sign up for our events. We have several divisions each week, varying formats, team and individual and more. Don’t be hesitant to play. The more you play, the more comfortable you feel. Additionally, these are fantastic ways to network and share ideas about what you and others are doing to build and promote the game of golf.
Fairways and Greens or Incredible up and downs to save par; I know which category I fall. I look forward to seeing you all at upcoming events.
I am always available to talk or discuss anything. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Chad Pitts | Executive Director | Iowa Golf Association
As the calendar turns to March and the days begin to stretch a little longer, there’s a familiar here at the Iowa Golf Association — golf season is right around the corner. It’s an exciting time as our team prepares for another year dedicated to serving the game and supporting the clubs and professionals who make golf thrive in our state. Even though we stay quite busy during the winter months, the really busy stretch is nearly upon us.
One of the things I look forward to most each season is visiting our championship host sites. Iowa is fortunate to have an outstanding collection of golf courses, and every year I’m reminded how lucky we are to have so many wonderful hosts for our championships. We are thrilled to once again partner with some exceptional facilities in 2026.
Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls will host the Iowa Amateur, one of our premier events and a championship rich with history. Beaver Hills offers a classic layout that will challenge the state’s best amateurs while providing a memorable experience for competitors and spectators alike.
Hyperion Field Club in Johnston will welcome the Iowa Women’s Amateur in July. Hyperion has long been recognized as one of Iowa’s premier clubs, and we get the joy of working with them every other year when they host the Herman Sani Tournament. It will be a perfect test for the ladies this summer. Additionally, Talons Golf in Ankeny returns as a Match Play host, continuing a strong partnership with the IGA. Talons has proven to be a terrific match play course and an outstanding supporter of amateur competition.
Events like these simply would not be possible without the dedication of all employees at our host courses, including all of the tremendous PGA Club Professionals. The work you do — often behind the scenes — sets the stage for everything we celebrate about this game.
From early spring preparations to the height of summer championships, your commitment to excellence is something we truly appreciate.
As we prepare for the season, we’re also excited to introduce a new way for golfers to show their pride in our association. The IGA has officially launched our online golf shop at iowagolf.org, where players and supporters can purchase IGA logoed apparel. Whether it’s on the course or around town, we love seeing golfers represent the association and the game we all care so deeply about.
Thank you for the expertise, care, and leadership you bring to your facilities every day. Spring is nearly here — and I can’t wait to see Iowa golf courses buzzing with activity once again.
Here’s to a great season ahead.
-Chad Pitts

One of our Iowa PGA Members has been named to the Global Golf Post All Pro Team 2026 Honorable Mention. Jay Giannetto of Elmwood Country Club has been named.

The Iowa PGA would like to congratulate Jay Giannetto on this great honor and award.

Matt Beatty

The transition from winter to spring is always a meaningful one for the golf industry. For members of the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association, it marks the shift from planning and professional development to execution and daily operations. After a winter season full of all types of weather, we’re excited to carry that momentum into the months ahead.
This past February, we were proud to host another successful Iowa Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show in Des Moines. With excellent attendance, a sold-out trade show, and strong engagement with a solid mix of educational sessions, the conference once again reinforced the value of continuing education and connections. Events like this provide an opportunity for superintendents to step away from their facilities, gain new insights, and return with ideas that can be applied throughout the golf season.
As we turn the page to spring, that focus on education and connection continues. The Iowa Golf Summit on May 11 at Wakonda Club brings together leaders from across the golf industry, including superintendents, PGA professionals, and course owners. It’s a unique opportunity to engage in broader conversations about the game, share perspectives, and strengthen relationships that ultimately benefit the facilities and golfers we all serve.
Just a week later, on May 18, the Wee One Benefit Tournament at Cedar Rapids Country Club provides a chance to support a cause that resonates deeply within the superintendent community. The Wee One Foundation assists golf course management professionals facing medical hardships, and this event is a powerful reminder of the support network that exists within our industry.
In June, the ITI Extension Fundraiser at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella continues that theme of giving back. This event supports turfgrass extension efforts through Iowa State University, helping ensure that superintendents and industry professionals across the state have access to research-based solutions and expertise when challenges arise.
Beyond these events, one of my priorities this spring and summer is to get back out and visit members across the state. There is no substitute for seeing operations firsthand, understanding the unique challenges each facility faces, and having meaningful conversations with the professionals doing the work every day. These visits help ensure that the association continues to evolve in ways that provide real value to our members.
As the season gets underway, I encourage you to stay engaged. Whether that’s attending an event, supporting a fundraiser, or simply taking time to connect. The strength of the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association is built on that involvement, and it’s what allows us to continue supporting superintendents and advancing the game of golf in Iowa.

- Bios written by Iowa Golf Association
Ross deBuhr
Ross deBuhr has touched many lives since he turned professional in 1980, ranging from the membership at Hyperion Field Club to future generations of golfers.
“One of the most commendable qualities of Ross is his personality and character, always thoughtful, exhibiting grace and humility, while treating all with respect,” said Larry Gladson, who had a distinguished career at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids and is a Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member. “His integrity is a cornerstone of Ross’s character and sets a powerful example for all who play golf or have a career in golf. He affirms that golf is not just about personal achievement but also about building relationships and fostering camaraderie amongst those who play the game.”
A fine player himself, deBuhr grew up in Ottumwa. He was the Iowa Junior Amateur champion in 1972 and the IGA Player of the Year 1976. He was a four-year letterman at the University of Iowa (197377). Hyperion hired Ross as head golf professional in 1982.
He served that club for the next 30 years, the last nine as the director of golf. He also filled numerous roles for the Iowa PGA Section, including stints as a board member (1995-2005) and president (2002-03). He was also the IGA Professional of the Year in 1992 and the PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 1993. He was presented the PGA’s Bill Strausbaugh Award in 2005 and was the PGA Merchandiser of the Year award in 2000.
Ross also co-chaired the Herman Sani Tournament with Hyperion member John Matovina from 1988 to 2012. That tournament raises funds for the IGA’s Sani Scholarship Fund.

“Ross’s commitment to serving the Hyperion membership was exceptional,” Matovina added. “I always admired his ability to provide an enjoyable membership experience to each and every club member. Satisfying the diverse needs of 400-plus member families was a challenge that Ross met with humility and professionalism throughout his time at Hyperion. He had a passion for growing the game as demonstrated by the countless hours he spent coaching and instructing junior golfers.”
One of deBuhr’s most significant achievements was a local program he started with another Hyperion member. It was called Drive, Chip and Putt, and was modeled after a football competition called Punt, Pass and Kick years before.
Drive, Chip and Putt has since been adopted nationally, with the USGA, the Masters and the PGA of America serving as event sponsors. Eighty regional qualifiers – boys and girls – will gather at Augusta National Golf Club April 5 to determine the national winner in four age groups ranging from seven to 15 years old.
“Through these efforts, Ross has instilled a passion for the game in many aspiring golfers, fostering a sense of community and support that is essential for the sport’s future,.” Gladson added.
Another retired golf professional and Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member, Jeff Smith of Oskaloosa, has worked sideby-side with deBuhr on numerous occasions and also witnessed his commitment to the Sani Tournament as a player.
“Ross is a very humble person, so much
so that many would not know how his leading by example has been a gift to so many who were touched by his presence,” Smith said.
Jason Knutzon
Jason Knutzon faced a tough decision on the eve of his senior season of high school.
He could leave Newport News, Va., and move with his family to Italy. His father, Russell, an Air Force pilot, had just been transfered there. Or he could move to Eagle Grove, live with his grandparents and complete his education in Iowa.
There were no high school golf teams in Italy, and not that many golf courses to choose from. So Jason, who took up the game in seventh grade, headed to Iowa. And that’s where his golf career took flight.
Iowa State made Knutzon’s dream come true when the Cyclones offered him a golf scholarship, and he parlayed that opportunity into state, national and international success.
The only men’s golfer to be inducted into the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame (2019), this golfing globetrotter had success in college events as well as Iowa’s summer tournament schedule.
He played in four NCAA regionals for the Cyclones, and was a first-team all-Big Eight selection in 1997. Golfstat ranked him 20th at the end of that 1997 season. Knutzon set a school single-season stroke mark (72.71) that stood for 11 years. He finished in the top eight of eight tournaments in 1996-97. That spring, Iowa State
finished third in the loaded Big 12 Championships.
He won three tournaments, was a runner-up five times and finished in the Top 10 a school-record 18 times over his career. After a redshirt season, in 199798, he completed his eligibility in the spring of 1999.
Knutzon was also the IGA Player of the Year in 1998, beating Mike McCoy in a tiebreaker. He won the Iowa Masters, Fort Dodge Amateur and Lake Creek Amateur that summer. He also tied for second at the Ottumwa Amateur and tied for fifth in the Northwest Amateur, a tournament he won in 1996. In those five 1998 appearances, Knutzon was a collective 30 shots under par with a 69.6 stroke average.
Knutzon turned professional in 1999. He qualified for the U.S. Open (2003), the Open Championship (2011), the U.S. Amateur (1998), the U.S. Public Links (1996, 1997) and the U.S. Junior Amateur (1994) during his career.
He reached the final stage of qualifying for the PGA Tour twice (2000, 2008), and tried make it there another time through the Korn Ferry Tour (2009). Though he came up short, Knutzon still put together a successful professional career on the Asian Tour and European Tour.
He won more than $2 million on those two tours. He reached the winner’s circle twice. The first came when he outdueled Padraig Harrington to win the 2004 Macau Open. Harrington was ranked eighth in the world at that time.
When Knutzon defended that title a year later, he was paired in the first round with Fred Coiuples, one of his idols. Knutzon shot 67 and beat Couples by a shot.
Jason also won the 2007 Motorola International. He also had six Top 10 finishes in European Tour events. He was ranked as high as 243th in the World Golf Rankings.
Back home, Knutzon won the Sani Tournament in 2005. He also made the cut in the John Deere Classic that year and qualified for the PGA Tour stop again in 2008.
On the 20th anniversary of his Macau Open, Knutzon was given a sponsor’s
exemption into the event. Ten years removed from the competitive grind and 48 years old, Knutzon made the cut and tied for 63rd.
Knutzon remains active in the game and is also an instructor, opening Jason Knutzon Golf in Altoona in 2021.
Denmar Miller
Denmar Miller broke onto the Iowa golf scene in 1929, when he won the Iowa Open at 19 years of age. He was a dominant presence for the next decade, winning three Iowa Amateurs, two Iowa Opens and three Des Moines City crowns.
His first serious title run came in 1928 at Hyperion, his home course. He had the 36-hole lead, and shot 69-73 the final two rounds. But he finished third, three shots behind Art Bartlett, who closed with a 67, and Bob McCrary, who posted a final-round 65.
Miller broke through in 1929 at the Wakonda Club. The Drake junior established a new course record in the first round, shooting 68 when Wakonda’s par was 73. He led wire-to-wire and shot 297, two shots clear of the field.
Miller, who left Hyperion and joined the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in 1929, used that home-course advantage again when he won his second Iowa Open in 1933. His 282 score gave him an eight-shot victory over Pat Willcox.
That triumph came a year after Denmar won his first Iowa Amateur at the Sioux City Golf and Country Club. Miller defeated Pete Jordan of Des Moines in the championship match, 4 and 3. His play left an impression on host pro Mike Shearman, who had played a vital role in Rudy Knepper’s golf game.
“That boy Denmar Miller is one of the finest amateurs in the game today,” Shearman told Bert McGrane of the Des Moines Register. “Miller has everything. His drives are 20 yards longer than the average good driver and that makes his other shots correspondingly easier. He has all the shots and a fine temperament.”
Knepper, also a three-time Iowa Amateur champion and Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member, won the 1992 TransMiss, was a runner-up in the 1921 Western Amateur and reached the semifinals
of the 1922 U.S. Amateur. Knepper was an alternate on the 1922 Walker Cup team and then made the team in 1923, but Princeton wouldn’t give him a waiver to compete.
Asked how Miller compared to Knepper, Shearman said, “Denmar is just as good today as Rudy ever dared to be.”
Miller’s dominance was on his display again in his final two Iowa Amateur triumphs. He returned to Hyperion in 1934 to beat John Vavra of Cedar Rapids, 13 and 12. It was the most one-sided championship match ever. Miller was 9 up after the first 18 holes.
Miller’s final title, also at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in 1938, came in a decisive 7 and 6 victory over Fred Denman of Des Moines. He also won Des Moines City titles in 1932, 1933 and 1935.
Denmar played in his first U.S. Amateur in 1933, at Kenwood Country Club in Cincinnati. Miller drew Lawson Little in the first round and lost, 4 and 3. Lawson went on to win the U.S.Amateur and British Amateurs in both 1934 and 1935. Miller lost in the second round of the 1935 U.S. Amateur.
Miller was qualifying medalist at the 1935 Trans-Miss, but lost his first match. He finished second to future U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur champ Johnny Goodman in the 1931 National Junior Chamber of Commerce Open. Goodman beat him in the second round of the TransMiss later that year.
Denmar didn’t defend his Iowa Amateur title in 1939, citing “impending business.” With a law degree in hand, he was working for his father’s firm. He also worked as a city prosecutor in Municipal Court for two years before serving his country in World War II. He was with the 17th Airborne Division, and was in the “Battle of the Bulge.” Denmar was discharged in February of 1946 with the rank of first lieutenant and earned three battle stars and the purple heart with cluster.
He returned to law work and held two part-time jobs, serving as head of the county real estate department then as county budget director. Miller retired from a 43-year law career in 1974. He passed away from cancer in February of 1978.

• Expanded the Junior Tour (started in 1998), and the Pee Wee Tour shortly after
• Ran original DCP in Iowa that included the section finals at the John Deere Classic – video on our Iowa PGA YouTube page – https://youtu.be/zwbHnvUPcRo?si=ItuNZPMpdT0ALDVZ
• And many more highlights that many of you may know about but may not.

To our fellow Professionals and members of the Iowa PGA Section,
The landscape of our association is shifting in exciting ways, both at the home office and right here in our neighboring Midwest backyard. As we look toward the 2026 season and beyond, there is a palpable sense of momentum that every PGA Professional in the Section should have on their radar. Coming off a record-breaking PGA Show in January, energy is high as Spring is arriving and championship season is here.
We are entering a pivotal chapter for the PGA of America with the recent appointment of Terry Clark as CEO. Clark’s leadership comes at a time when the “Gateway to the Game” is wider than ever. His vision for the association emphasizes elevating our Major Championships and strengthening the PGA Professional’s role in the modern golf economy.
Under this new leadership, the commitment to the women’s game has never been stronger. We are seeing this firsthand through the meteoric rise of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, which continues to set the gold standard for excellence.
This summer, “Major” golf is closer than you think. We are incredibly excited to see the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship return to Hazeltine National Golf Club in 2026.
For each Iowa PGA Golf Pass sold, the American Cancer Society® will receive 15% of sale of each card. ACS does not endorse any service or product. ACS will receive a minimum of $10,000 in connection with this promotion.
Hazeltine is a venue that needs no introduction to golf fans in the Midwest. Having hosted the 2002 and 2009 PGA Championships, the 2016 Ryder Cup, and the 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA, perhaps the most impactful news for our members and their networks is a unique promotion that bridges the gap between 2026 and the highly anticipated return of the Ryder Cup to Hazeltine in 2029.
The American Cancer Society® does not endorse any product or service.
The PGA of America has announced a premier ticket incentive: Anyone who spends $1,500 or more on tickets for the 2026 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship (while supplies last) will receive guaranteed access to purchase two weeklong grounds tickets for the 2029 Ryder Cup, bypassing the lottery.
As we all know, Ryder Cup tickets are among the most difficult to get in all of sports. This offer allows fans to support world-class women’s golf—witnessing a $12 million purse and the likes of Nelly Korda or Minjee Lee—while effectively “locking in” their spot for the 2029 Ryder Cup
The game’s growth is not just a slogan; it is a statistical reality. There were nearly 8 million female golfers in 2024, a 41% increase since 2019. Women now account for more than one of every four golfers on the course. The Women’s game continues to be a huge part of growth in our industry.
We encourage you to share these opportunities with your memberships:
• Ticket Variety: From $45 Any Day Flex tickets to the elevated Club PGA experience on the 17th hole ($125).
• Junior Access: In our continued effort to grow the game, kids 15 and under receive free grounds access with a ticketed adult.
• Military Appreciation: Free access for Active Duty, Retirees, Veterans, and National Guard.
• Volunteerism: We are looking for 1,500 Volunteer Ambassadors to act as the face of the Championship.
As we look toward the 2026 Championship at Hazeltine, we see more than just a tournament; we see the future of our industry. Let’s ensure the Iowa PGA is well-represented in the galleries. For more information: www.kpmgwomenspgachampionship.com.

The Iowa PGA is very excited to welcome back Camelbak and Bushnell, Sterling Cut Glass, Shattuck-St. Mary’s, and PRG accessories as supporting sponsors of the 2026 Iowa PGA Junior Tour.
The Iowa PGA is happy to welcome back PRG Bespoke Golf Accesories. They offer many accessories in golf and they will bring some neat product to 2026.
Iowa PGA sales representative, John Novosel with Bushnell and Camelbak, will be supplying prizes for MAJOR and ACE Point Events administered by the Iowa PGA Section Staff in 2026. Juniors will win these gifts through contests that will be held during MAJOR and ACE event.
Sterling Cut Glass is another great sponsor who continues to supply great crystal for our Junior and Pee Wee Tour.
Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep School. Shattuck-St. Mary’s is a college preparatory co-educational boarding and day school and located in Faribault, Minnesota. They offer students the opportunity to pair a challenging and motivating academic program of study with a focus concentration in athletics or the arts.
The Iowa PGA is excited for the 2026 season and to be partnering with all its sponsors. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their support and we are looking forward to great season of golf!
The Iowa PGA staff is looking forward to seeing all the junior golfers and families in the 2026 Junior Tour season!

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is one of only 18 schools in the United States with a PGA Golf Management Program accredited by the PGA of America. This comprehensive program prepares students to turn a game that they love into a career that they love, and engages them through classroom activities, laboratory experiences including individual and group golf lessons, an extensive player development program and high quality internship experiences on a global scale.
Students seeking admission to the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln must meet University entrance requirements. For admittance into the PGA Golf Management Program, students must have:
• A genuine love of the game of golf
• An outgoing and engaging personality
• A verification of a USGA handicap of 12 or less
All of our students are members of the Student Club. Club activities include monthly meetings where industry experts are invited to come speak to the students, student-run tournaments held at courses in and around Nebraska including Wilderness Ridge, Arbor Links, Fremont Country Club, Bent Tree and Dakota Dunes, and social events like intramural sports, community service, growth of the game programming, watch parties for major sporting events and other fun activities.
An extremely important part of the educational experience involves our internship program. Every student will spend 16 months on paid internships gaining valuable hands-on experience in the golf industry. Our internship coordinator works with each student to tailor a set of experiences that complement the classroom education we provide. We have students interning from coast to coast, as well as internationally. Our students have worked at the Carnoustie, Pinehurst, Pebble Beach, Grove Golf Course in Chandler’s Cross, England and at Cape Kidnappers Golf Club in Awanga, New Zealand. At the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the sky’s the limit!

The PGA Golf Management curriculum consists of classroom studies, internships and player development activities. Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Science degree in PGA Golf Management with a minor in an area of emphasis or two they are passionate about! Your academic advisor, a faculty member within the program, will help you determine the best pathway for
your unique goals.
Content within the PGA specific curriculum is divided into four distinct levels, with each building on the previous. The Qualifying Level provides some base knowledge in three key areas specific to the golf industry: Interpersonal Skills, Business Skills and Golf Instruction Skills. In Level 2, students will apply knowledge gained in Level 1 in a “hands-on” environment. Level 3 ties the three key areas together into one cohesive package.
Students have the opportunity to participate in short-term study abroad programs to Scotland and China, golf’s oldest and newest countries. Students earn credit and have access to generous study abroad scholarships!
Students can also participate in domestic study tours to see various aspects of the golf industry. This last season PGA students paired with turf students on a trip to Kansas City to see how vital the relationship is between the PGA Professional and GCSAA Superintendent at high performing facilities.

On and off campus our students are provided with the best in golf to learn and improve their golf game. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities are a complete, diverse collection of technology to study and improve golf swing and ball flight, including three simulator spaces with over 300 courses in total. We have the only swing lab featuring a High-Speed Phantom Camera system and are the only program to feature all three of the major launch monitor systems on the market: TrackMan, Flight Scope, and the Foresight GC Quad.
Off campus students have access to nine partner golf courses including our home course Wilderness Ridge Country Club which hosts such events as the NAIA National Championship, Stage 1 of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School and other national events. Access includes private, semi-private and public courses so students always have a place to play and receive a variety of terrains, layouts and more.
