Executive Director Report
Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA | Executive Director
What a year for rain. Reminds me of the year the late Mark Lemon, Charlie Pribble and Red Dog Lockie built Airport National in Cedar Rapids. Iowa doesn’t have to worry about irrigation in a year like this. Hopefully you have been able to play some golf around the rain drops. This is the time of the year that our Iowa PGA Staff and our Allied Associations begin planning for 2026. We each want to thank any golf facility for helping us out by hosting events throughout Iowa and Western Illinois. Without your assistance with this, each Association would not be as successful as we all have been. It is that commitment to your fellow golfers and “giving back to the game” that keeps Iowa at the forefront of leading golf throughout the nation. Even with a small population. You give our Professionals and Amateurs great venues to test their skills on the local level and then compete at a high level at the National events they compete at. Thanks to all of you that have volunteered, were a spectator or participated in any of our educational or playing opportunities in 2026. It is also that time of the year we get to celebrate achievements within our Iowa Golf Circle. The Iowa PGA will announce its Section Award winners for 2026 next weekThe Iowa PGA will award their Section Awards along with their Players of the Year for the Professionals and our Junior Tour (just completed its 29th year) at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on October 27, 2026. The Iowa Golf Association will announce its winners later this Fall and celebrate sometime in December. The Golf Course Superintendents will do the same and give their awards out at the February Turf Conference in Des Moines. Don’t be afraid to thank your PGA Professional, Golf Course Superintendent, General Manager and the wonderful staff that helps make golf enjoyable for each of you at your facilities. We are having some wonderful and continued success with all things GOLF in 2026. We can’t wait to see what 2027 will bring. For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine sends over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well. Have fun, Play Well “Mase”
President’s Report
JR Millar, PGA | Iowa PGA President | Lake Bracken Country Club
Yesterday it was May and now it’s October!! To say that this has been another busy season is an understatement. I would like to take a moment to thank all of our Course Superintendents and their respective staff members. They work tirelessly to provide the best playing conditions possible for our golfers. Unfortunately, they typically just hear the negative. Please go to your maintenance crew and remind them that their work does not go unnoticed. We could not do what we do without their efforts. If you don’t have a strong relationship with your Superintendent, why? Invite them to golf or dinner and discuss what you can do together for the benefit of your membership and facility. Trust me, you will not regret it. To all of our junior, high school, and college golfers…THANK YOU. Your dedication to golf only strengthens the game, which is one of the few you can play your entire life. I hope you had a successful year and I wish you the best of luck in any remaining fall events. Spring will be here before you know it, so stay active during the offseason. Another thank you goes to Blake Newell for his execution of the 1st Annual Birdie Blitz. We were able to raise thousands of dollars for the Iowa PGA Foundation. I was able to participate in the event and had a great time. This was just the beginning, so I ask that all PGA professionals try to play in future tournaments so we can fill it up and raise even more money for the Foundation, which helps to fund GIVE, Swing with Kids, and our scholarship and grants. Lastly, our Fall Business Meeting is coming up in a few short weeks. I would like to encourage you to attend the meeting, education, and merchandise show. This is a great time to catch up with your fellow pros and help plan for next season. Also, get involved with the governance of the section. We will have an election for 3 Board of Director positions. This is a great opportunity to learn the inner workings of the section and give back to all your fellow professionals. I cannot stress enough how rewarding and fulfilling this small commitment can be. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, you may always reach out. I will always find time to chat and if I cannot answer you question, I will get back to you promptly. Thank you all, J.R. Millar, PGA President of the Iowa PGA Section and Foundation

Hello Iowa PGA, It’s hard to believe we are in the heart of football season! There is always plenty to look forward to this time of year, but it’s also hard to say goodbye to seasonal staff members as they return to college or high school. While I won’t be cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team anytime soon, I have certainly become a big fan of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln PGA Golf Management Program. Emersen Motl, from Ames, Iowa, is a sophomore in the UNL PGM Program and spent this summer as an intern on our golf staff at Wakonda Club. She was a tremendous addition to our team and was recently recognized as a PGA WORKS John & Tamara Lundgren Scholar for 2026–27! We also hired UNL PGM student Kai Nelles in January to lead Wakonda Club’s instructional programs as Director of Instruction. Based on our experience with Emersen and Kai, I would encourage anyone looking for an intern or staff member next season to consider the UNL PGM Program. The only downside is how quickly they return to classes in August! Emersen and Kai are just two examples of the outstanding work Joe Canny and the entire PGM team are doing at UNL. Many of the students in the program come from the Iowa PGA and grew up playing on the Iowa PGA Junior Tour. That is a great reminder of the important role we all play in developing the next generation of PGA Members. It is incumbent upon us to continue inspiring junior golfers, exposing them to the many career opportunities within our industry and encouraging them to consider a career as a PGA Professional. PGA Member Survey & PGA Forward The PGA of America recently completed a comprehensive member survey, receiving nearly 9,000 responses—10% above the participation goal. That level of engagement provides our PGA of America staff and Board with invaluable insight into what members believe we are doing well, where we need to improve and where our priorities should be moving forward.
Coinciding with the member survey, PGA of America CEO Terry Clark introduced PGA Forward, a strategic agenda designed to build upon our mission through three primary pillars: 1. 2. 3.
Strengthening the Profession Growing the Game Elevating Our Championships
three primary pillars: You will hear more about PGA Forward in the coming months. I am encouraged by its focus and excited to see us taking a strategic approach to strengthening the PGA and positioning our Association for the future. Iowa PGA Recognized Among Top Sections The member survey also focused on how PGA Members feel about their local Sections. To no one’s surprise, the Iowa PGA received outstanding feedback from its membership. Thanks to the leadership of the Iowa PGA Board and Officers, and the Iowa PGA staff, the Section rated very highly across a wide range of areas, including: overall satisfaction, engagement, sense of belonging, education, leadership, networking, member support and strategic alignment. That feedback and top section recognition reflects not only the work being done every day to support Iowa PGA Members, but also the tremendous impact of the Iowa PGA Foundation and its efforts to grow the game throughout Iowa and northwest Illinois. Congratulations to Greg, Tess, Mike, Casey, Stephanie, Jacob, Blake and the entire Iowa PGA staff. I am incredibly proud to see the Iowa PGA rated so highly by our members. Of course, the information gathered through this PGA Member Survey is only valuable if we act upon what we learn. As Terry Clark stated in his first Quick Takes video, “My commitment is to keep turning member feedback into action, keep moving the Association forward, and keep you updated along the way.” That commitment is important. PGA Members took the time to share their perspectives, and now it is our responsibility as an Association to listen, respond and demonstrate progress. I am thankful to serve on the PGA board as we work alongside the staff to continue that work. I will continue to keep you updated as PGA Forward and other initiatives develop. Thank you for everything you do for the Iowa PGA and the game of golf! Sincerely,
Aaron Krueger, PGA District 8 Director, PGA of America Board of Directors General Manager, Wakonda Club

Recognizing Our Peers and Looking Ahead to February
Matt Beatty, Executive Director Iowa Turfgrass GCSAA Iowa Chapter
October is a time of transition for Iowa’s golf courses. The weather is cooling, the growing season is winding down, and maintenance teams are shifting their focus to fall projects and preparing for winter. It’s also a good time to recognize the people who help make our golf courses successful. Many of those people work behind the scenes, and this is a great opportunity to make sure their work gets recognized. Nominations are open for our Iowa GCSA Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of the Year awards, along with our Environmental Stewardship award. If you know a superintendent or assistant superintendent who has made a difference, helped move the profession forward, or simply does a great job day in and day out, please take a few minutes to nominate them for an award through the Iowa GCSA website. We have so many great professionals here in Iowa, and everywhere I go, I see success stories. Our people are humble and hardworking, and most won’t nominate themselves. If someone comes to mind who is deserving of recognition, I encourage you to take a few minutes and nominate them. While we’re recognizing those who have made an impact here in Iowa, we also need to think about the future of the profession. More than $20,000 in scholarships are available to students this year. If you know a student who is interested in pursuing a career in turfgrass or a related field, I hope you’ll help spread the word about these opportunities.. Award nominations and scholarship applications are due November 1. Looking Ahead to February February 2027 marks an exciting new chapter in the history of the Iowa Turfgrass Institute’s annual educational and networking event as we move to the Iowa Events Center and join forces with the Shade Tree Short Course. This “new” event will be called the Iowa Shade Tree & Turfgrass Conference + Trade Show. Over 900 people and nearly 140 vendors are expected to attend the expanded event. While the education, member socials, and meetings offered on the turfgrass side won’t change, what is new is the opportunity to take advantage of some of the Shade Tree Short Course sessions. The Shade Tree and turfgrass education tracks will remain unchanged, but instead of two separate conferences taking place at different times, we’re now bringing them together under one roof at the same time. For our golf management professionals, this creates an interesting opportunity, with the ability to take in sessions that get into detail on other aspects of maintaining a facility, such as arboriculture and landscapes. We’re excited about this change and the ability to expand on the educational offerings available to our members, while maintaining the aspects that have made these conferences the premier green industry events in the state of Iowa.
Iowa Golf Association
Reflections on the Year So Far— and Should We All Play More Golf?
Chad Pitts | Executive Director | Iowa Golf Association
As I write this, we are just barely into September, but you wouldn’t know it by looking outside. It still feels very much like the middle of summer. We have plenty of events remaining on the calendar, but many of our busiest days are now behind us. We tend to “save” some of our age-restricted events for when the school year gets going again, including the Iowa Mid-Amateur and Senior Four-Ball. We also have our annual Wife-Husband Tournament, which is always a great time in Waterloo. All of that keeps us plenty busy, but perhaps not at the “breakneck speed” that May through August can bring. In other words, there is still a lot to do, but it’s beginning to feel like the season is winding down. And that can be a good thing. Maybe this is a good time for all of us to pause and reflect on the year so far. I hope it has been a good one for you. It certainly has been a successful one for us at the Iowa Golf Association. We increased our membership numbers once again and had a tremendous response to our championships, with full fields for most events. We continue to find ways to provide more value to our members, including through technology such as GHIN and Golf Genius, both of which continue to evolve and improve. Soon, we’ll even see a fresh look and new branding across the GHIN app. As I think about the highlights of 2026, there are plenty that come to mind—even though there are still more to come. Owen Sawyer winning his second consecutive Iowa Amateur stands out, as does a wonderful few days at Hyperion Field Club for the Iowa Women’s Amateur, where two Iowa State teammates battled through a playoff to decide the champion. Our members also continued to make their mark on the national stage. Jon Brown made another deep run at the U.S. Senior Amateur, while Fiona Watson qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur. And perhaps no image from this year’s U.S. Amateur traveled farther than one featuring one of Iowa’s own. Mike McCoy, 63, was captured at Merion with a cigar in his mouth, a Pine Valley visor on his head and a matching Pine Valley member logo on his shirt. Within hours, the photo had gone viral across golf social media, turning the longtime Iowa standout into a small internet sensation. It will certainly be one of the first things I remember about 2026.
But there’s another thought I keep coming back to as the season winds down: Did you play enough golf this year? If you’re like me, the answer is probably no. When we work in the golf business, it’s easy to spend so much time organizing tournaments, answering emails, attending meetings and taking care of the business of golf that we forget why we got into this industry in the first place. There is still plenty of golf left this fall. I intend to play more of it. I hope you do, too. Sometimes the best way to appreciate the game we work so hard to promote is simply to go out and play it. So, before we close the books on 2026, find a few friends, grab your clubs and make some time for a round. We spend an awful lot of time working on golf. Maybe it’s time we remember to enjoy it, too.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work?
Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
