We can’t wait for the season to start in 2023. We have a full slate of Professional events for our Iowa PGA Section Professionals, a robust Junior and Pee Wee Tour starting in April, over 20 Drive, Chip & Putt Local qualifiers and many local tournaments, education and golf related events happening in 2023. Come be a part of the Iowa Golf scene within all of the allied organizations – Iowa PGA, Iowa Golf Association, Iowa Chapter of the GCSAA and the Tall Corn Chapter of the CMAA. We all work so closely together as organizations but also at our local golf facilities throughout Iowa and western Illinois.
This winter, our current Iowa PGA President Erin Strieck has led us into our 2023 Strategic Plan as we work on our tactical goals for 2023 and strategic goals for 2023 and the next 3-5 years. We want to continue to grow golf and to grow our Iowa PGA Membership in all things golf.
As you read through this magazine realize that there are many great things happening in Iowa and Western Illinois. The IGA is almost completely done fundraising for the Golf House Iowa with hopes of starting construction of that building in April of 2023.
The two major team events will have two Captains and Iowa Golf Hall of Famers with roots in Iowa. Mike McCoy will lead the Walker Cup team in St. Andrews in the 2023 edition. Mike, go lead them to victory as you will make a great captain. Iowa’s own Zach Johnson will also lead a talented Ryder Cup team in Italy against a G B & I team. Will this be the year that we finally win on foreign soil? The last time was 1993 when Tom Watson led the team to a 15-13 victory at the Belfry in England. We know that Captain Zach will not let our team go down without a fight. Zach, go get them!
We hope that we have as nice a summer in 2023 as we did in 2022 as we watched some of our Iowa PGA Professionals compete in Majors and watch McCoy win a British Senior Amateur that followed a wonderful victory by Gene Elliott in the same event in 2021.
FYI – a lot of neat golf stuff happens in this wonderful area. Stay tuned here and on our social channels for updates on all of the events in 2023.
For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page within the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well.

A Message From the Iowa PGA
Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA Executive Director
Erin Strieck, PGA | Pinnacle Country Club | President
Happy Spring!
I can only say one thing, I am glad I live/work in Iowa/Western Illinois. If we lived in Minnesota or states north of us, we would still be under a couple of feet of snow. Many of the courses have opened in Iowa and in spite of a couple of late snowstorms, have stayed open this spring.
With golf still enjoying some of the boom from 2020, look to our Iowa PGA to assist you with playing more golf, getting started in golf or even getting started in golf as a second career or a new career for you younger players.
Our Iowa PGA offers great programs for you and the golfers at your facility. From our PGA Junior League, Drive, Chip and Putt and the Iowa PGA American Cancer Society Golf Pass there are opportunities for you and that Junior Golfer to enjoy the game of a lifetime. All the programs benefit the Iowa PGA member, junior golfers and are sure to add a benefit to your facility.
Let’s not forget the amazing Iowa PGA Junior Tour that is starting another year with over 90 events hosted throughout Iowa and Western Illinois. We could not do this without the support of our Iowa PGA Professionals, their facilities and those wonderful facilities without a PGA Professional that host a junior tour event. We want to thank them from the bottom of our golfing hearts.
The Drive, Chip and Putt, with the finals at Augusta National each year, started in the Iowa PGA in 1999. This wonderful program gives junior golfers of all skill levels the chance to compete in a fun filled event. Iowa will host 24 local qualifiers as they start the road to Augusta in 2024. We also get to host one of the Regionals and the final step/qualifier at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois in 2023. Go get your junior golfer signed up at a course near you to start their step towards the DCP finals and Augusta National.
Every year I challenge myself to play more golf and to engage myself with our facility members…I challenge you to the same with your family, friends and grab someone that has never played the game of golf to play a round with you.
Have a great season and if you need me, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you
Erin Strieck, PGA President of the Iowa PGA Section and Iowa PGA Foundation

Hello Iowa Golf Community,
Welcome to the 2023 golf season and a chance to create more memories with your friends and families on the course. Golf has seen a resurgence over the past three years, and we are looking forward to another strong year of play at all the incredible courses in Iowa. Having been in the golf business for 30 years, it is great to see families coming out to the course to spend time together. We are also seeing a continued uptick in ladies and new players trying golf, which bodes well for the future. The PGA of America and its 28,000 members are working hard to keep this momentum going and continue to offer many programs to participate in whether you are a beginner or an advanced player.
It is an exciting Spring as the new PGA Frisco property opens down in Frisco, Texas and they hold their first major, The Senior PGA Championship during the dates of May 24th and May 28th. This is truly a transformational property that will elevate the game of golf in the U.S. for generations to come. We are proud to call PGA Frisco the new home of the PGA of America and hope soon you make plans on visiting the two championship
courses, staying at the new Omni 500 room resort and see the new 2 acre putting course or the par 3 short course.
The 2023 PGA Championship is coming this May and will return to Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. for the 105th edition. The dates of the event this year will be May 18th – 21st and will have one of the strongest international fields in golf. Tickets for this years event can be purchased at www.pgachampionship.com/tickets and there are many packages to choose from to fit what is best for your experience. The USA will look to defend the Ryder Cup on foreign soil as the event heads across the ocean to The Marco Simone golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy. The Italian capital city will host the Ryder Cup for the first time and the dates are September 29th – October 1st. Zach Johnson is the Ryder Cup captain for the United States and is a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Johnson made his Ryder Cup debut in 2006 and played in five Ryder Cups. He has also served as a U.S. Vice-Captain in the last two Ryder Cups. Please visit www.rydercup.com to learn more about who will be on the team this year, the event schedule and ticket packages.

2023 Iowa Golf Hall of Fame Class
Kevin Beard
Ankeny’s Kevin Beard not only was a familiar face at Otter Creek Golf Course (1990-2017) and Ankeny Country Club (1991-1993) for over 25 years, Beard also helped shape countless junior golfers into some of the state’s best.
Beard’s ‘Operation State Champ’ program for junior golfers began in 1997 and was designed to improve the performance of golfers in the area to the point that they would be able to qualify and compete for a state championship. The program involved both summer and winter golf activities, with indoor practice throughout the winter as the biggest change in their practice routine.
The ‘Winter Program’ started with 12 players, all from Ankeny, housed in the old clubhouse at Otter Creek GC. Within three years word had spread and the program had over 60 juniors from numerous high schools and junior highs across central Iowa.
The program had to move to a bigger building as the demand grew. Beard then transformed an old fire station that would become home to the program for the next 10 years. Within a few more years, the number of students grew to over 200 in the winter, with the summer junior program introducing golf to nearly 300 kids each year. At one point a total of 28 schools were represented from as far away as Carroll and Pella.
Beard’s involvement in the program ceased in 2009, due to his focus shifting to the ‘new’ golf course and clubhouse at Otter Creek GC, which he also served as General Manager of at that time. There was no official count, but Beard and his program are credited with helping over 400 players appear at the state tournament – including those who have gone on to become PGA Professionals with their own junior golf programs.
“Kevin instilled character and integrity when teaching our youth what golf teaches us about life,” Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Jeff Smith said. “He grew the game through ways that are now being adopted 25 years later.”
Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member J.D. Turner also commented on Beard’s energy with junior golfers.
“His creativity and teaching prowess with juniors is remarkable,” Turner said.
“All of his students learned about the game, which teaches honor, friendship and life-long positive experiences. He touched the lives of so many in Iowa through golf.”
Doug Dunakey
Doug Dunakey, originally from Waterloo, began turning heads on the golf course at an early age. One of the first came at his hometown’s biggest event.
Dunakey, then 13 years-old, opened with a first round 69 at the Waterloo
Open which earned him a final round pairing with former Masters champion Bob Goalby. Following wins at the Iowa Junior Amateur (1981), IGA Match Play (1985) and Iowa Amateur (1987) Dunakey turned professional and eventually made his way onto the PGA Tour.
Dunakey made 96 starts on the PGA Tour, including a third place finish at the 1999 Honda Classic and three top 10’s. He also made 72 starts on the (then) Nike Tour, which included a win at the 1998 Nike Cleveland Open. That win came one week after shooting 59 in the Nike Miami Valley Open.
Dunakey, who was a three-time All-American and team National Champion at California State University-Stanislaus, is remembered by many who grew up with him or played against him over the years as a great competitor.
“At a young age, he was a competitor that just hit his next shot without any dramatics – just getting the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible for that day,” IGA Board Member Tom Christensen said. “He cared about the game and those that he played with.”
Jim Currel
Jim Curell, affectionately known as ‘The Legend’, was a household name on the Iowa golf scene for over 50 years.
Curell, of Boone, who passed away in April of 2020, was described by Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Rick Brown
16
- Bios written by Iowa Golf Association
Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue
as being a gentleman golfer in the truest sense of the word.
He had a homemade swing that produced outstanding results. He was a three-time winner of the Lake Creek Amateur (1979, 1981, 1999), twice a champion at the Northwest Amateur (1982, 1988) and low amateur at the Iowa Open (1992). Curell also was victorious at the 1980 Tournament of Champions and 1987 Iowa Mid-Amateur. Curell earned IGA Player of the Year honors in 1979.
Once Curell graduated to the Senior Division, he was still a force to be reckoned with – winning the 2005 IGA Four-Ball Senior Division with partner Bruce Gervais, 2011 Senior Match Play and was the 2014 Iowa Masters Senior Division champion. Curell was the IGA Senior Player of the Year in 2010 & 2011 and twice qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur (2010, 2011). Curell made an astonishing 18 career hole in ones, including one to end a match against Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Jon Brown in the 2008 IGA Match Play Championship at Lake Panorama.
“For over four decades he set the standard on how to play the game both as a competitor and a gentleman,” Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Dave Sergeant said.
In addition to his wonderful playing record, Curell gave back to the game that had given him so much. Upon his retirement from Redeker’s Furniture in Boone, he began helping maintain the grounds at his home course, Honey Creek. He also served in a volunteer capacity on the committee that administers the Iowa Masters at Veenker each year.
“He will be missed, but never forgotten,” Sergeant said.
Joe Palmer
A fierce competitor and unmatched drive to win are two ways of describing Joe Palmer, of Norwalk.
“Joe has been and continues to be one of the best competitors within the game of golf I have ever seen in the
state of Iowa,” Jon Olson, owner of 13 IGA Point Event victories, said of Palmer. “His attitude, desire and perseverance in any round he competes is truly inspiring. He has made myself – and anyone who is attentive to his game – a better player; Joe simply never gives up.”
Palmer’s record speaks for itself. He is a winner of four ‘Open Division’ IGA point events, which includes the 2004 IGA Four-Ball, 2004 Iowa Mid-Amateur and a pair of IGA Match Play titles, his second coming in a remarkable run in 2021 to win the event as a Senior.
Palmer’s dominance on the course really took off when he turned 50 – collecting 27 victories within the Senior Division, which includes five IGA Senior Match Play victories and four Iowa Senior Amateur wins. Palmer also has three Senior Division wins each in the Iowa Mid-Amateur, IGA Four-Ball, Herman Sani Tournament, Fort Dodge Amateur, Iowa Open, and Iowa Masters.
“Joe has been a stalwart on the Iowa Amateur golf scene for decades and has the game that just keeps getting better over time, a rare feat for most accomplished players,” Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Ken Schall said. “Joe is still competitive among the younger competitors around the state, as evidenced by winning the IGA Match Play and the Iowa Senior Match Play title (his 5th) in the same year. His ball striking ability would compare to nearly any senior player, even at the highest level, professional or amateur.”
Palmer has also competed in six USGA Championships and looks to add to that number in the future.
The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame is administered by the Iowa Golf Association on behalf of all golf organizations in and around the state, such as the Iowa Section PGA and the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association.
The nomination and induction process consists of two committees, the Nominating Committee and the Voting Committee. The Nominating Committee determines the eligibility of nominees submitted by the general public as well as identifies individuals to nominate. They finalize the ballot. The Voting Committee has the task of researching and studying those on the ballot and casting votes for induction. The Voting Committee consists entirely of individuals who are current members of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.

“Bring on Spring”
Chad Pitts | Executive Director | Iowa Golf Association
As the snow melts and the flowers start to bloom, golfers all over Iowa are eagerly preparing for the start of a new golf season. Just like the arrival of spring brings new beginnings, so does the start of a new golf season.
A new golf season brings a sense of renewal. After a long, cold winter, the arrival of spring signifies the start of warmer weather, longer days, and invigorated energy. The new season is a time for golfers to leave behind the mistakes and struggles of the past and start fresh with a clean slate. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, spring brings a renewed sense of motivation and excitement.
Part of the excitement for the new year is the protentional for growth and improvement. Just as the flowers in your garden are starting to grow and blossom, golfers are beginning pull the clubs out of the basement, hit the driving ranges, and start to work on improving their swings and perfecting their game. A new year means new goals and the sweat that is necessary to achieve them. Whether it’s hitting longer drives, improving accuracy, or simply lowering your scores, the beginning of the year is the perfect time to focus on growth and improvement.
As the weather turns warmer it brings with it opportunities for outdoor activities and adventures, while the start of a new golf season offers a chance to explore new courses and meet new golfing buddies. Golfers can take advantage of this fresh start by joining a new club, trying out a new course, or even taking lessons from an Iowa Section PGA Professional to improve their skills.
After all, the benefits of this great game are many. It provides us with much needed physical activity, stress relief, social interaction, mental stimulation, and a sense of accomplishment. Plus, it is a game for all to enjoy, no matter how old or young.
And keep in mind, that if you are looking for fun, competitive opportunities, the Iowa Golf Association offers tournaments for men, women, juniors and couples. Our events are seeing entries come in earlier than ever, so do not delay in getting signed up.

So, grab your clubs and head out to the course – the new golf season is waiting for you!

ITI Conference and Trade Show - Recap on #89!
Jeff Lamoureux | Executive Director | Iowa Turfgrass Institute
The Iowa Turfgrass Institute’s mission statement reads “Providing research, education, and support to the Iowa turfgrass industry,” As we look back on the 2023 Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show I think we can say “Mission Accomplished!”. The success of the 89th annual conference is a culmination of many hours of preparation and planning. A huge thank you goes to the ITI board of directors which includes the conference planning committee. They provide a tremendous amount of support to staff before, during and after the conference. Thanks also to the Iowa Golf Association staff for their support and help with conference registration and the silent auction. Special thanks also goes to Nicol Jones for her guidance throughout the process. And of course, thank you to all the attendees, trade show exhibitors, and education session presenters. Many, many individuals contribute to the success of the conference.
But along with the education sessions and trade show, the conference is always a great time to enjoy and reconnect with friends and colleagues and become energized for another growing season. The association socials and the all-industry reception provide a great opportunity for networking with peers in the industry.
This year we saw the return of a Keynote Speaker. Major Sean Quinlan shared stories of his military career along with his successes as a high school football coach. Hopefully his motivational speech on leadership helped inspire and energize those in attendance.
Despite the untimely weather event on Thursday of the conference, attendance was up from an year ago. We also had an increase in the number of exhibitors at the tradeshow.
Finally, I would like to congratulate all the award and scholarship recipients. The conference is a proper time to recognize the accomplishments of our peers in the industry and the next generation of turf professionals through scholarship. Thanks again to all who attended and contributed to the success of the conference. We have already began preparing for next year’s conference. We are looking forward to #90!

The Iowa Golf Council (IGC) is made up of the four major allied associations in Iowa – Iowa Golf Association, Iowa Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents of America (GCSAA), the Tall Corn Chapter of the Club Managers Association (CMAA) and the Iowa PGA. This was loosely formed allied board over the past few years that worked hard in 2020 to keep golf in Iowa open along with answering the many questions that were coming forth with Governor Proclamations, National Guidelines and in some cases what the local authorities were handing down.
In the Winter of 2022-23 the IGC Board met to set the course for this newly formed c-3 corporation. Out of these many meetings a strategic plan was produced and will go live around May 1, 2023. Here are the Mission, Vision and Value statements that the plan is centered around.
Mission statement - The Iowa Golf Council will promote the golf industry through the implementation of programs and policies designed to grow the game of golf while being sound environmental stewards.
Vision – The Iowa Golf Council exists…
• To be Iowa’s leading golf collaborator
• To guide Iowa’s golf industry
• To represent Iowa’s golf industry locally and nationally
Values - IAGOLF

The Iowa Golf Council also commissioned an Economic Impact Study in 2015 to show the impact that golf has on the state. In 2015, Iowa’s $606.1 million dollar golf economy expenditures supported total statewide with $72.3 million in state and local tax revenue. Click here to view that Economic Impact Study.

“Captain Kirk” Stanzel Passes
To The Iowa PGA Members, Associates and Friends, some of you may already know this. but Kirk Stanzel, our Executive Director from March of 1989 until his retirement in April of 2006 passed away on Wednesday February 8, 2023 at around 3 pm. Once we receive more details, we will be sure to pass this onto the Iowa PGA Membership. Nebraska PGA ED/CEO David Honnens let me know today of his passing.
As many of you on this email served with Kirk as an officer and/or board member or as an Iowa PGA Member or Partner, we wanted to make sure you were aware of this.
Kirk hired some wonderful people during his time with the Iowa PGA Like our very own Tess Goudy, current Executive Director Kevin Helm (Michigan PGA), Executive Director Geoff Lofstead (South Florida PGA) and former Iowa PGA Executive Director Troy Christensen. Troy said he had talked to “The Commander” on January 9th and that he was upbeat and told him he was on the mend.
Kirk led us through some wonderful times and growth within our section - from the start of our Junior Tour, DCP, Golf Pass, GHIN Handicap system (Iowa PGA/IGA Joint offices at the time) and the Las Vegas Pro Am to name a few awesome programs we continue to have to this day. He also led us through the tough times. He always had the best interest of our Iowa PGA Members and Golfers in mind. I am glad that he was part of the success of our Iowa PGA including the impeccable mentoring he did with the people he hired.
For those that never had a chance to meet Kirk, you missed one of the true gentlemen of our PGA. and Iowa PGA.
Keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Click here for Captain’s Obituary and service information.
Thanks Mase
Greg Mason, PGA | Executive Director
Here are some thoughtful quotes from some of the Iowa PGA Past Presidents & Section Leaders:
“I am forever grateful to Kirk for his support. He believed in me and provided me the opportunity to start my career with Iowa PGA. He was wise and fun and will be missed.” - Tess Goudy, PGA - Assistant Executive Director/Junior Golf Director of the Iowa PGA
37 www.iowapga.com Kirk Stanzel
“Kirk’s numerous contributions to Iowa/Western Illinois Golf as Executive Director for both the Iowa PGA Section and Iowa Golf Association will never be forgotten. Some of Kirk’s biggest accomplishments include the introduction of the GHIN handicap system, Iowa Junior Tour, Drive, Chip, & Putt, Golf Pass, and Las Vegas Pro AM. Kirk treated his employees like family which was apparent by looking at the staff longevity during his time as Executive Director. He was a fabulous mentor as three of his employees went on to serve as Executive Directors in various PGA Sections. Most will remember Kirk for his upbeat personality and sense of humor. Kirk’s presence would always brighten your day.” - Troy Christensen
- Former Executive Director of the Iowa PGA & Boatwright Scholar IGA
“Much like Kirk did with everyone, he immediately became my biggest fan and biggest supporter once he hired me. I was completely inexperienced, young and quick to make a mistake. None of that mattered to Kirk as he mentored me and supported my career growth. As I have said many times Kirk demonstrated to me how to treat people. Every person Kirk interacted with was the most important person in the world at that time. I learned a great deal in my three years with Kirk but how he treated others will be something I’ll carry for the rest of my life.” -
Geoff Lofstead - current Executive Director/ CEO of the
South Florida PGA & former Assistant ED/Tournament Director of the Iowa PGA/IGA
“Thank you all for these great messages you are sharing with your respective memberships. Kirk was instrumental in starting me in my career in association management and was an amazing mentor to me as a very young and inexperienced lover of golf trying to figure out how to make s career out of it. My wife and I were married during my three years working for Kirk and he and Kathy were so supportive… They were great friends and role models for s young couple from Ohio beginning life together a long way from home in Iowa. RIP Kirk.” - Kevin Helm -
current Executive Director/CEO
of the Michigan PGA & former Assistant ED/Tournament Director of the Iowa PGA/IGA
“Kirk was a great man and friend. He strongly believed in the PGA Golf Professional and had a simple common-sense approach and leadership style. He was instrumental in the growth of the Iowa PGA and was the right man at the right time to lead us. I cherish our time together…..he will be missed!”- Larry Gladson, PGA
“To All, Kirk Stanzel was a great leader for our Iowa Section PGA. I would echo all of Greg and Jeff’s comments about Kirk. I always enjoyed working with Kirk during my time serving on the Board of Directors. I always considered him a friend. Sorry to hear the news of his passing. Prayers to his family.” - Regards, Ross deBuhr, PGA
“To all, Sad to hear of the passing of Captain Kirk Stanzel. Kirk was a strong leader for our section creating many new programs which our section still benefits from today. He was always well respected amongst fellow Executive Directors and had a keen since of hiring great people such as Tess, Troy, Kevin and Geoff. May Kirk rest in peace.” - Jeff Smith, PGA
“Kirk was a tremendous leader for our section. He was a great thinker and put his thoughts into action. He was a consensus builder and a great advocate for the PGA professional. I have many fond memories of “Captain Kirk.” - Ken Schall, PGA
“Kirk was a great leader for us. We all have great memories or a story of Kirk that puts a smile on your face. He lead us thru a crazy time in our section history and did it with true professionalism. Prayers to Kirk’s family.” - Steve Hutton, PGA
38 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue Kirk Stanzel
“Kirk was a tremendous leader and did so many good things for us PGA pros. Had a moment for everyone anytime. Very saddened to hear this news and my condolences to his entire family at this time. RIP Captain, you will be missed!” - Richard, Now former “owner/operator”, Specht, PGA (Kirk always called me that)
“I am so sorry to hear of Kirk’s passing. He was a wonderful executive and truly admired the PGA professional. My fondest memory is of my “professional interview” for becoming the first woman member of the Iowa Section. He was so positive and encouraging…& was a “forward thinker”. Our Section owes him a great deal.” -
Lisa Miller, PGA Master Professional
“Thank you for sharing Greg, so sorry to hear this news. I came into the section in early 2002 and had the opportunity to interact with Kirk for 4 years - he was a wonderful man! My condolences to all who knew him, may we all do as much for the section and golf as he did.”Sarah
Bidney, PGA
“It is sad to hear of Kirk’s passing, he helped lay the ground work of where we are now. A great leader and he had tremendous respect of the PGA membership. I had several interactions with him throughout my years in the golf industry (both with the GCSAA and PGA), and it was always positive. Huge loss to the golf industry. Wishing the best for his family.” - David

Sophia Miller Princeton, Iowa
In the golf world the month of April belongs to one tournament. A tournament that features some of the best players, story lines and performances. The Masters has come to be known as, “a tradition unlike any other,” to all golf fans. But, before we get to one of golf’s biggest spectacles, Augusta National will host 80 junior golfers for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. Among those 80 participates are Sophia Miller of which qualified through the Iowa PGA’s Drive, Chip and Putt events in 2022.
Sophia Miller has a passion for golf and enjoys competing in tournaments.
Sophia Miller of Princeton, Iowa started her journey at Glynns Creek Golf Course on Monday, July 18, 2022. She scored 104 points to win her (Girls 10-11) division.
When did you start playing golf?
I started messing around with golf when I was really little. I hit balls in the garage and behind our house off a mat when I was 3. I started playing tournament golf when I was 8.
What made you want to do DCP?
I saw the finals one year on TV and my Dad asked me if I would like to do it and I said yes.
What’s your favorite part of DCP?
So far my favorite part was going to Medinah. I saw a lot of neat things.
Are you excited about going to the finals? Absolutely!
What other sports do you play? I play tennis.
What is practice like?
I take lessons with Paul Del Vechio at Crow Valley, practice with my Dad and sometimes other kids at Crow Valley. I also do OP36 at Crow Valley and play on Crow Valley PGA Junior League team. In the winter I practice on a simulator and go to Arizona.
What’s your best DCP Skill?
Consistently chipping, but twice I have done really well in the putting. Putting is what won the event at Medinah for me.
DCP History
Prior to this year I made the Sub-Regional every year I played. When I was 8 I got 3rd at the Sub Regional at Glen Oaks missing going to the regional final by 1 point.
What made you get her into golf?
Our whole family plays golf including my 2 older sisters, my dad, my uncle and my Grandpa.
Cover Story: Sophia Miller 41 www.iowapga.com
Cover Story: Sophia Miller
Why DCP?
I like that it is different than the other tournaments that I play.
How did they get started in golf? (parents answer)
I put a club in Sophia’s hands when she was really little and started taking her to play with me and her sisters as soon as we could. It is a great way for us to spend time together.
What do you enjoy about golf? (golfer answer)
I enjoy getting to see lots of golf courses all over the country as some of them are very beautiful. I also enjoy meeting other people in golf and I enjoy competing.
Why did you enter them into DCP? (parents answer) DCP was the first thing that I had Sophia do competitively as obviously it takes less time and is less of a mental grind when they are little. As they get older it does become quite nerve racking though for both the participant and the parent.
How was your experience at Medinah?
It was very fun, but I was also very nervous. My favorite part was hearing the cheers from the crowd when I made the 30 foot putt. My least favorite part was all the interviews I had to do after I won.
How do you feel about going to Augusta?
I am very excited as I have never been there and it is going to be very cool to be in places that I have seen on TV.
Although this is a competition and each age division will crown winners at the end, the focus of Drive Chip and Putt and the National Finals is centered around the enjoyment of playing golf, meeting new people and having fun. Regardless of the outcome, Sophia has accomplished a great feature in advancing to the National Finals. The Iowa PGA wishes her the best of luck and hopes they enjoy their experiences.
The Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals took place on Sunday, April 2 at Augusta National Golf Club.

We asked these two a few questions and wanted to give you a perspective of what a Private and Public does at their facilites.
These are the questions that we asked Todd Fower and David Lawrence.
How has the PGA.Coach training, profile, and leads changed your business?
How did PGA.Coach training change how you approach coaching?
What would you say to your peers that have not completed the PGA.Coach training?
What were some of the memorable learnings you took away from your PGA. Coach training and ADM certification?
Can you track value or added revenue that is attributable to what you learned on PGA.Coach?
How have you used the PGA.Coach App?
The ADM training is really important and especially now. The specialization of athletes at such a young age has not only been detrimental to the athletic but overall development of young people. I was a four-sport youngster and three through high school. Everything I learned and skills I developed during other activities and ‘playtime’ (like riding bikes or swimming) all positively influenced my development. Young people need life balance same as adults. PGA.Coach is a great platform for golf coaches to connect and share ideas.
The training certainly inspired me to look at instruction in a new and better way. Becoming a full-time instructor after decades of being a club professional was a major pivot and PGACoach was a wonderful blueprint to follow in developing a new program and strategy.
Both lessons and revenue has increased dramatically since doing the training and establishing a profile in PGACoach. The app is really nice because you are in contact anywhere and anytime through your phone. That is invaluable today if we want to experience the same life balance we would like for our students!
Most importantly, getting leads without doing anything has made a great impact on my influence. Players of all levels are finding me and reaching out to me to see if I am a good fit for their goals.
I would recommend PGA.Coach to any golf professional whether they teach a lot or none. The knowledge, skills and perspective it provides on players of all levels and ages is invaluable. I wish I had seen the ADM model 30 years ago!

PGA Coach provides a trusted “landing page” for my entire coaching business. The training reinforced my beliefs in coaching and helped me define my style efficiently and effectively. PGA Coach training allowed me to transform my passion for coaching into a business model that gets results for my players and provides me with a profitable business that fits my schedule and work-life balance.
PGA Coach training helped me to structure my coaching as an expert and not just a servant. Setting guidelines and expectations for myself as well as my players has been a game changer. It has allowed me to find what areas of teaching excite me the most.
Online training courses can be tedious. We’ve all gone through certifications where we have the videos playing in the background waiting until we have to take the final quiz. PGA Coach training was the opposite. I found myself engaged and actively learning skills that I use in my daily business. I’m thankful that I was an early adopter of PGA Coach, and I would highly recommend it to everyone who teaches in any capacity.
The Swings with Kids program is a golf instruction program within school districts which reside within the state or Iowa and/or Iowa PGA Section boundaries The Swings with Kids program will introduce the game of golf with the direction of Iowa PGA Professionals inside physical education classes Students will learn about golf and also benefit from the numerous life skills that the game of golf offers
The vision for the Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids program is “Helping kids excel by introducing them to the life skills that the game of golf provides ” These life skills include character, honesty, integrity, respect, perseverance and cooperation Our golf is simply for children to “try golf”
SWINGS WITH KIDS
As a multi-sport athlete growing up, I have always understood the importance of cross-sport training and learning skills that other sports teach us. I am excited to see the golf world work alongside the American Development Model and start producing more golfers that are athletes in the truest sense of the word.
I see value added every day from my training on PGA Coach. The added revenue from new leads is self-explanatory, but the results that I get for my players are even more valuable. As my players experience success, they are more likely to continue the journey of their own and spread the word about the Red Zone Golf Academy at Davenport Country Club to others.
The PGA Coach app is a great way to keep track of your schedule when you are on the range or course all day with players. The opportunity for members to schedule lessons with me through the app saves me valuable time that used to be wasted texting back and forth to find available lesson times.
David Lawrence Assistant Golf Professional | Davenport Country Club
One of the primary reasons the Iowa PGA Foundation chose the Tri-Golf and Golf Xtreme equipment is that it is high-quality equipment and curriculum at an affordable price Since PE classes share equipment, each school generally only needs 1 bag Many school districts do not have enough of a PE budget to purchase the equipment for their schools Iowa PGA Professionals are working within their communities to raise funds for the Swings with Kids program The school districts that do not have a local PGA Professional, however, need your help
The Iowa PGA Foundation does not want a lack of funding to be the reason why golf cannot be a part of your PE curriculum
What you can do?:
Sponsor a school – $700 for an Elementary (TriGolf) and $1,250 for a Junior High (Golf Xtreme)
Donate to your District – Funds will be earmarked for the area that you choose
Give to the General Fund – Funds will be designated for the Swings with Kids program, helping to support unsponsored schools

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program
How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work?
Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life.
This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.

COURSES AND TRAVEL
Are you looking for a course that challenges your routine or would enjoy some golf related travel while exploring the state? Following a seemingly never ending winter, the urge to get out and on the courses is stronger than ever. Iowa ranks third in golf courses per capita. That creates opportunity to golf somewhere new at a whim. Drive, chip and putt your way across the state supporting the golf ecomomy and improving (or at least enjoying) your game.
