A Message From the Iowa PGA

Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA | Executive Director Are you thinking about a career in the golf business? Did you know that the University of Nebraska at Lincoln is one of the PGA/PGM Universities where aspiring golf professionals can begin to learn their craft. Please contact Joe Canny, PGA at jcanny2@unl.edu or call him at 402-570-1801 for more information on how to attend the University and their other scholarship opportunities. Golf offers many opportunities to remain in the industry in some fashion. One can become a Club Professional running golf facilities at all levels – Head Golf Professional, Director of Golf or even the General Manager of the whole facility. One can become a Golf Course Superintendent and maintain the grounds at one of our nearly 400 golf courses in and around Iowa. Iowa has some of the best turf degrees at our Community Colleges or at Iowa State University. One can also become a sales representative in manufactured goods to facilities, fertilizer and chemicals to golf courses or a myriad of various membership directors or such at golf facilities throughout the US and for sure our Region. You can also work for state golf associations whether for the USGA, PGA, CMAA or GCSAA associations. If you want to combine your love for golf into a career that you would love – call us and we will be glad to speak to you about the careers, we love. You can see by the Class of 2022 Iowa Golf Hall of Fame the various talents that going into that class and the various careers you can have in golf. Barb Berkmeyer showed that one can be a middle school teacher and still play golf as a recreation at a very high level including playing in eleven USGA Championships to go along with her many state and regional championships. The late Charlie Pribble turned a career as a Golf Course Superintendent into long-time mentoring and growing his fellow superintendent careers. I was privileged to work alongside “Pribbs” as we built Airport National Golf in Cedar Rapids in 1992. He taught me so much about the strong relationship a PGA Professional MUST have with their Golf Course Superintendent. He taught me that no one is ever so good at what they do that they can’t pick up the phone and call a colleague for assistance on any issue they may have at their facility. Pribbs was always doing that if he wasn’t answering the phone when a colleague called him for help. Mark Egly, PGA turned a strong career as a player into a life-long search to help make golfers of all skill-levels better in their own golf games. Whether they wanted to play on the PGA Tour or just find a way to “break 100”, Mark was always at the forefront of teaching in Iowa and the Nation. Similar to Pribbs, Mark is always there to help his fellow PGA Professionals improve their teaching and their teaching practices so that others benefit from these teachings. A career in the golf industry is shown by this class of Hall of Famers. Congratulations to the Class of 2022! Iowa Golf Hall of Famer Chad Proehl will be competing in another Senior Major in 2022. He has qualified for the 2022 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship to be held at Harbor Shores on May 25-29. We wish Chad luck as he gets to play with the best Champions Players in the world, again. Finally, I would like to thank our talented IowaPGA Staff for all of the hard work, perseverance and dedication. We lost Jazz Tulda to the Wisconsin PGA this winter as he has “headed home” to work as their Junior Golf Coordinator. We have hired two of our former interns with the Iowa PGA, Jacob Hesner (Junior Golf Coordinator) and Blake Newell (Tournament Assistant) to help us continue great things with the Iowa PGA. With the support of our Section Officers, Section Board and Foundation Board, our staff continues to a deliver high-level events to our Section Professionals and to the Junior Golfers throughout our Section. For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page within the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well. Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

Click here for more information and register for this year’s event. I was privileged to be a part of the Greenside – Official Podcast of the Iowa Golf Association as Clint Brown the IGA’s Director of Communications & Marketing in February of this Year. You can go to this link and listen to “The Pinnacle of Golf”. Clint asked many questions of how I got started in golf and caught the “golf bug”. We talked about how this great career has led me to become the first female President of the Iowa PGA and the Iowa PGA Foundation and what the future is bringing to the golf in Iowa. Have a great season and if you need me, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you Erin Strieck, PGA President of the Iowa PGA Section and Iowa PGA Foundation

Greg Neujahr, PGA Hello Iowa Golf Community,

Message from Ditrict 8 Director

Welcome to the 2022 golf season and creating more memories with your friends and families on the course. Golf has seen a resurgence over the past two years, and we are looking forward to another strong year of play at all the incredible courses in Iowa. There were over 518 million rounds played in 2021 on a national level which is a 20% increase from 2019. Having been in the golf business for 30 years, it is great to see families coming out to the course to spend time together. We are also seeing a continued uptick in ladies and new players trying golf which bodes well for the future. The PGA of America and its 28,000 members are working hard to keep this momentum going and continue to offer many programs to participate in whether you are a beginner or an advanced player.

District 8 Director for Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections

It is going to be a busy Spring over the next couple months as the PGA of America opens its new headquarters in Frisco, Texas. We are in the process of moving our headquarters and partnering with Omni Resorts to open a new $500 million property. Along with our new headquarters building, there will be a 500-room resort, a retail/entertainment district and two championship golf courses. We feel this will be a truly transformational property and the new modern home of golf. The entire property should be open in early 2023, kicking off with the Senior PGA Championship on the East course designed by Gil Hanse. Meanwhile, this year’s PGA Championship comes to Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this May and it should be another exciting event. Hopefully you are thinking about attending, due to the proximity, to see the greatest players in the game compete for the Wanamaker trophy. Next month many of you will be heading out to the course for your first round and working the rust off your game. Now is the perfect time to reach out to your PGA Professional for help with your game or advice on new equipment. We are here to welcome you, get you out on the course, play golf with you and make this difficult game a little easier. The boom of the golf industry has created more demand for staff and those who might be interested in getting into the business. Whether you are looking for a second career or just finishing your education, it is a great time to be a part of this rewarding profession. Please reach out to your local PGA Professional or visit www.PGA.com, for more information and how you can get started in our Association! Thank you for your support of golf, and I hope you continue to enjoy our sport in 2022. Your Iowa PGA Professionals are ready to help and grow the game so please reach out to them and get started today. Sincerely, Greg Neujahr, PGA District 8 Representative for Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections Champions Run, Omaha, NE.

Iowa Golf Association

Enjoying the Game

Chad Pitts | Executive Director | Iowa Golf Association It’s hard for those of us that work in golf to feel the same way about the game as we did when we had so much more time to play it. After all, it’s hard to separate the work part from the fun part, sometimes. It makes sense though - if you work at a downtown office building you probably aren’t spending your off-hours at the said building. That is what happens to many of us in the golf business. We spend so much time at the course or working around golf when we do get some free time being at the course still sort of feels like work and then other “life stuff” takes precedence. Would venture to say that the further you are into your career, the less you want to spend your free time at the golf course (i.e. your workplace). It’s too bad that so many of us feel that way, but it is also understandable. We have other commitments in life and, given the seasonal nature of golf in Iowa, we have to be very busy during the spring, summer, and fall which leaves little time to spend with our families, do our house chores, or even other hobbies. I’ve found a few things that help me bring back that desire to play. I just took a “buddies trip” to Bandon Dunes Resort in Oregon. We spent a week playing all of the terrific courses and it brought a desire to get back and practice a bit more than I have in recent years. It was somewhat of a rejuvenation. I have a young daughter and will have a son sometime in June. I am hopeful that they will try golf and enjoy it when they are old enough. If that happens, I already know that it will bring me out to the course with a totally different frame of mind - one which I am looking forward to. I think the biggest thing is making time for yourself to play and enjoy the game, even if you do work in the business. I’ve found that if I just go into a round of golf with the right mindset, it increases my enjoyment exponentially (not a surprise to anyone, I’m sure). So part of my pre-round routine nowadays is to take a few minutes to set my mind right. And for me, right now, a good portion of that is lowering my expectations (I smile when I say that but it is true) so that I enjoy my time and appreciate it more. Because, after all, time is precious so where you choose to spend it means a lot. Personally, the enjoyment of the game is going to be a focus for me this year. I know that I won’t play as much as I have in the past (again, we have another baby on the way!), but when I do get the chance to tee it up for fun, I’m going to try to focus on the positives golf gives us all - the exercise, the time with friends, being in the sunshine. I hope many of you get lots and lots of rounds of golf played this year, but more importantly, I hope you truly enjoy every single one of them, no matter your score.

Iowa Golf Council

The Iowa Golf Council (IGC) is made up of the four major allied associations in Iowa – Iowa Golf Association, Iowa Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents of America (GCSAA), the Tall Corn Chapter of the Club Managers Association (CMAA) and the Iowa PGA. This was loosely formed allied board over the past few years that worked hard in 2020 to keep golf in Iowa open along with answering the many questions that were coming forth with Governor Proclamations, National Guidelines and in some cases what the local authorities were handing down. In the Spring of 2022, the IGC officially became a 501 ©3 Corporation by the IRS. As a group we look forward to putting COVID behind us as we begin working towards getting the word out about golf in Iowa and Western Illinois. The IGC will begin working with the local and state Tourism associations to further golf as tourism attraction for those wishing to visit our state(s) or just to take a day trip. Past Iowa PGA President John Valliere currently serves as the Eastern Iowa Tourism Association (EITA) President. They are working on all things involving tourism in Iowa, including golf. We thank John for his continued efforts about bringing forth action on getting golf recognized as a tourism draw to the region.

The IGC also administers two events for those interested in the industry in golf. The Iowa Golf Summit is held every other year, last one in March of 2022, to bring industry veterans together to learn more about what each other are doing. Paul Long was our KeyNote Speaker and did a wonderful job of speaking. On May 22, 2022, the 2nd ever Iowa Woman’s Golf Summit will be held at Stone Creek. Click here for more information and register for this year’s event. The Iowa Golf Council also commissioned an Economic Impact Study in 2015 to show the impact that golf has on the state. In 2015, Iowa’s $606.1 million dollar golf economy expenditures supported total statewide with $72.3 million in state and local tax revenue. Click here to view that Economic Impact Study. Harris Yamaha Golf Cars has been an outstanding company to work with over the years. One quality I really appreciate about their team is the relationships we have built outside of the business aspect. They truly care about their customers on a personal level and treat them as partners and friends. Their communication and timely responses make working with them very simple and easy. The customer service they provide to us in the Des Moines area has been great! It’s easy to see why over 3,000 courses have made the switch to Yamaha Golf Cars in the last 12 years. The Yamaha Drive 2 car and its features are awesome!

Hayden Klein

Liliana Graham

Cover Story: Klein & Graham

In the golf world the month of April belongs to one tournament. A tournament that features some of the best players, story lines and performances. The Masters has come to be known as, “a tradition unlike any other,” to all golf fans. But, before we get to one of golf’s biggest spectacles, Augusta National will host 80 junior golfers for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. Among those 80 participates are Hayden Klein and Liliana Graham, both of which qualified through the Iowa PGA’s Drive, Chip and Putt events in 2021. Klein and Graham have a passion for golf and they both enjoy competing in tournaments. Hayden Klein (Pictured Left) Hayden Klein of Coon Rapids, Iowa started his journey at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake on Sunday, July 11, 2021. He scored 73 points to win his division. He then competed at Medinah Country Club on Sunday, September 11, 2021 where he scored 120 points. How did they get started in golf? “Hayden first expressed interest in golf around six years old after watching “The Short Game” on Netflix that showed youth golfers playing in the US Kids World Championship in Pinehurst (probably watching that winter of 2019),” said Hayden’s father, Andy Klein. “We started having him do some informal lessons with a local golfer (Devon Dembinski) that year (summer of 2020). “Devon really encouraged us to sign Hayden up for a tournament and told us Iowa PGA was having a tournament coming up soon that Summer at Lake Panorama National Golf Course. We were a little hesitant to sign him up as we just didn’t want it to be a bad experience for whatever reason and he lose interest in the game. We ultimately signed him for that tournament, and he won. Long story short, we played a few more tournaments that year in Iowa and also played in the US Kids Lincoln Tour Fall League and he wont that (which ultimately qualified him for the 2021 US Kids World Championship, which he played in). Hayden has played in approximately 40 tournaments since getting started and he loves to compete.” What do you enjoy about golf? We asked Hayden what he enjoys most about golf, “I enjoy playing in tournaments and I like putting,” Hayden said. Why did you enter them into Drive, Chip & Putt? Andy Klein commented, “We entered Hayden into the DCP because it was another way he could compete and a way to see different courses and meet people if he was lucky enough to continue to move on through the different qualifying events.” How was your experience at Medinah? Hayden said, “I had fun and I was definitely a little nervous. I thought the first tee was pretty cool.” How do you feel about going to Augusta? Hayden on Augusta, “I’m very excited and I’m most looking forward to attending the Master’s practice round and hopefully meeting lots of PGA players.” www.iowapga.com 29

National DCP | Klein & Graham

Andy Klein commented on behalf of his wife on the experience ahead of them, “Anyone that follows golf knows about the Master’s and the history behind Augusta. I’m excited to just get access to the grounds and get a chance to see my son compete on one of the nicest courses in the world.” Liliana Graham (Pictured Right in the middle) Liliana Graham of Bettendorf, Iowa started her journey at Glynn’s Creek Golf Course Friday, July 16, 2021. She scored 95 points and also won her division. She too traveled to Medinah Country Club on Sunday, September 11, 2021 where she edged out the other competitors with 118 points. How did they get started in golf? Liliana Graham got her start for the love of the game from her grandpa Ron Graham. He was the one that got us all into golf. It all started when our son Evan was 4 years old. Grandpa bought him a cut down club at a driving range and we were hooked. Liliana started swinging a club around 5 years old and playing tournaments at age 7.

to make it to Augusta.”

Although this is a competition and each age division will crown winners at the end, the focus of Drive Chip and Putt and the National Finals is centered around the enjoyment of playing golf, meeting new people and having fun. Regardless of the outcome, Hayden and Liliana have both accomplished a great feature in advancing to What do you enjoy about golf? the National Finals. The Iowa PGA wishes them the best Graham answered, “There are quite a few things I enjoy about golf. I like meeting new people, actually of luck and hopes they enjoy their experiences. playing golf, having fun on the golf course with my The Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals took place on grouping. Also, I really love winning tournaments.” Sunday, April 3 at Augusta National Golf Club. Why did you enter them into Drive, Chip & Putt? We always look to do as many things as possible in golf. The DCP is just another opportunity for our kids to have fun, meet new people , and compete against other kids. Of course, the opportunity to make it to the national finals at Augusta National is a dream. How was your experience at Medinah? “My experience was great! Competing I wasn’t nervous, it was just golf. After I won, I was interviewed by the golf channel and I so nervous. Before we left, my family and I were able to go into the huge clubhouse, it was really nice! We got to see the trophies and were able to take some photos,” Graham said. How do you feel about going to Augusta? “I feel nervous and excited at the same time. I have the opportunity to compete at Augusta National, not many kids my age gets this opportunity,” Graham commented. Her parents wanted to say, “We’re very excited! We’re so proud of the hard work that she has put in 30 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue

We asked these two a few questions and wanted to give you a perspective of what a Private and Public does at their facilites.

Private Facility

These are the questions that we asked Mike Armes and Mark McMahon! How has the PGA.Coach training, profile, and leads changed your business? How did PGA.Coach training change how you approach coaching? What would you say to your peers that have not completed the PGA.Coach training? What were some of the memorable learnings you took away from your PGA.Coach training and ADM certification? Can you track value or added revenue that is attributable to what you learned on PGA. Coach? How have you used the PGA. Coach App?

I was excited to do the PGA Coach training to get ideas on methods and strategies for different age groups, this was my first experience with the American Development Model (ADM) whose principles align physical and psychological development to stages, delivering appropriate skills and exercise at the appropriate time. Having been a multi-sport athlete these made perfect sense, but we are in a world of specialization, it is important to keep athletes from injury or burnout. This is something not broached through the PGM Teaching models I received. All this has changed my approach by utilizing non-golf movements in my instruction methods through implementation of the lesson plans provided. Once I was certified through PGA Coach, I created a profile to allow prospective students to my contact information, which successfully provided me new students that are not members of my club. In addition, the benefits to obtaining certification include assessment tools, activity planners and lesson plans accessible with an app or online. It is easy to see the value of PGA Coach in not only the teaching aspect but also ability to see the number students you have received through the web site and know the income generated. The greatest value to me is the knowledge factor in providing me with access to tools that make me a better prepared teacher. In the end I feel in the end I am a better teacher and coach with more tools at my disposal by simply getting my PGA Coach certification. I encourage every PGA Professional/Associate to investigate these valuable tools. Public Facility

PGA.Coach & What It Has Meant To Me PGA.Coach is student friendly approach to the connecting all levels of students to qualified PGA Professionals for their golf instruction needs. Students have the ability to search coaches in their area, review their profiles, and once they have found a match they contact their coach of preference to proceed with setting up lessons. This allows students a stress free environment to get started on W A P G Aand becoming a better golfer. their journey toI O improving, In the lesson request process of your lead, the student has the opportunity to share what it is they’re looking for when they come to you for instruction. This prepares you as a teacher as to where you need to start with your student. All of these factors allow you to give your student a very personalized experience before they ever hit a golf shot. This is what makes PGA.Coach so unique! When you pair PGA.Coach and the ADM coaching model together, it provides a positive and obtainable blueprint for your student. In my experience with PGA.Coach this is a communication and booking system that works well in today’s fast paced world. This allows you to spend more time to focus on your facility and customers, not on the phone trying to book lesson appointments.

SWINGS WITH KIDS

There is no ceiling with PGA.Coach! This program will undoubtedly bring more revenue to your facility and to you as an instructor. Player development is at an all-time high across the country, this is proven and successful program to bring players to our game. If you’re a PGA Professional who is hesitant to be a part of this program, I would challenge you to ask yourself. Why do you not want to be more efficient with your time, create more revenue sources for your facility, and above all things – grow the game? Now is the time, become a PGA Coach.

Participating Schools

Mark McMahon, PGA Head Golf Professional | Ellis Golf Course

The Swings with Kids program is a golf instruction program within school districts which reside within the state or Iowa and/or Iowa PGA Section boundaries. The Swings with Kids program will introduce the game of golf with the direction of Iowa PGA Professionals inside physical education classes. Students will learn about golf and also benefit from the numerous life skills that the game of golf offers. The vision for the Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids program is “Helping kids excel by introducing them to the life skills that the game of golf provides.” These life skills include character, honesty, integrity, respect, perseverance and cooperation. Our golf is simply for children to “try golf”. One of the primary reasons the Iowa PGA Foundation chose the Tri-Golf and Golf Xtreme equipment is that it is high-quality equipment and curriculum at an affordable price. Since PE classes share equipment, each school generally only needs 1 bag. Many school districts do not have enough of a PE budget to purchase the equipment for their schools. Iowa PGA Professionals are working within their communities to raise funds for the Swings with Kids program. The school districts that do not have a local PGA Professional, however, need your help. The Iowa PGA Foundation does not want a lack of funding to be the reason why golf cannot be a part of your PE curriculum. What you can do?: Sponsor a school – $700 for an Elementary (TriGolf) and $1,250 for a Junior High (Golf Xtreme) Donate to your District – Funds will be earmarked for the area that you choose Give to the General Fund – Funds will be designated for the Swings with Kids program, helping to support unsponsored schools.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program

How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work? Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!

Charlie Burkart Scholarship The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.
