Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue
Iowa PGA Executive Director: Greg Mason, PGA
A Message From The Iowa PGA for assisting on these emails and clarifications in 2020. The Officers of our respective Associations also assisted as they gave us some great perspective, great questions and commentary on how we should proceed. Thank you to each of them.
Iowa PGA Executive Director Iowa PGA Golf Magazine – Spring Review of 2021 Golf information in Iowa and Western Illinois is best heard from the Allied Associations that make up the Iowa Golf Council. Along with my fellow Allied Association Executive Directors (Chad Pitts of the Iowa Golf Association, Randy Robinson of the Iowa Turfgrass Institute and Shane Hart of the Tall Corn Chapter of the Club Managers Association), the Iowa Golf Council works in Des Moines to promote golf through Tourism and other avenues related to the golf industry. In 2015 we commissioned a group to do another Golf Economic Impact Study in Iowa; with our first one being done in 2005. In 2020 the Iowa Golf Council took on a new role of informing our member facilities in Iowa and Western Illinois on many of the proclamations that they were being sent out about by the respective Governors of the States. We were meeting on a daily basis via video conferencing and on emails to update our facilities on how these proclamations might affect them. We wanted to make sure they understood what the States were saying and then to work with their local officials for any additional clarification. That was an important role in 2020. I want to thank my fellow Executive Directors for assisting on these emails and clarifications in 2020. . I want to thank my fellow Executive Directors
In 2021, we look forward to getting back to what we originally wished to do as a Council – PROMOTE GOLF IN IOWA and WESTERN ILLINOIS. John Valliere, Iowa PGA Past President sits on the Eastern Iowa Tourism Association Board as the Vice President and will no doubt assist us in getting golf as a large part of the Tourism dollars that are spent in Iowa. As you review the Golf Economic Impact Study you will see that golf affects more than just the golf courses. It affects, in a positive way, local hotels, restaurants and businesses as those people traveling to play golf, increase revenue in those other areas. In 2020, we found that golf was a community sport that can positively affect communities and the health and well-being of those citizens that participate in golf. Thank you for all that continued to play golf in 2020, took the game up in 2020 or maybe had left the sport and returned to golf in 2020. We welcome all of you to the greatest sport that you can play for a lifetime.

Iowa PGA President Iowa PGA Golf Magazine Spring Review of 2021 We wanted to highlight one of our Iowa PGA Professionals that just happens to be our Iowa PGA Section and Foundation Presidents. Matt Sherlock is the Head Professional of MK Golf Shops Inc. that manages the Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa, Harvest Point in Oskaloosa and Bos Landen in Pella. Along with his wife Kandis, they operate those facilities from selling greens fees, giving golf lessons and maintaining the golf courses by managing the total operations. As you look at the picture to the right titled, “PGA Professionals have many roles. But one badge.”, we are reminded that Matt is a true representative of what the over 250 PGA Members and Associates do on a daily basis. Look over that list and I am sure if you call Matt up, he will tell you that this profession is one that you find you are not doing the same thing every day other than entertaining our customers and promoting golf. The accompanying pictures show Matt in his many roles as our IowaPGA President. He also just happens to run three golf operations, be a great dad and better father. Matt we solute you as the IowaPGA Section President representing us in great fashion. From the Iowa PGA Staff 6

Chad Proehl, Judd Gibb & the late Jerry Johnson
2021
Iowa Golf Hall of Fame
Class of 2020 | Judd Gibb, PGA “I am overwhelmed when I look at those names in the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame,” Gibb said. “I know so many of them and am honored that my name will be added to that list. I have been so lucky to have helped and worked with people who helped me along the way. It’s fun to look back at with all the junior players I have been able to help. Golf is a great game.”
Class of 2021 | Chad Proehl “This is such a great honor, yet very humbling to be considered in the same company as those that have contributed so much to the game of golf. My love for the game started when I was 10 years old and I have been blessed to continue to play and teach every day since. There are so many people that have helped me to get where I am today and I’m so grateful for them and their continued support and encouragement.”
Class of 2021 | Jerry Johnson
The IGHOF committee has been most generous selecting Jerry as one of their inductees for 2021. He would be honored as am I. I know from Jerry’s many years on the nominating committee that many exceptionally qualified individuals are considered for this honor. It is beyond humbling to acknowledge his selection as one deserving of this recognition. He will join a group of Iowa individuals he held in high regard for their own accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf. I wish he were here; but he would argue that he is not worthy, so I will simply say “Thank You” for him. Our family is very grateful to our friends and Jerry’s colleagues in the Iowa PGA for his nomination and letters of support. To be recognized by his peers in this way is a tremendous reward for his many years of service “growing the game”. My congratulations to Jim Carney and Chad Proehl for their inclusion in this year’s class as well. -Deb Johnson

“Greenside” Podcast
Chad Pitts | Executive Director | Iowa Golf Association The offseason is an interesting thing. It always seems short, but too long at the same time. As I sit here and type this, the temperature is -10 and the forecast doesn’t get into double digits for nearly two weeks. I appreciate the calmer months in this business but each year, usually sometime in February, I am ready for the warmth to arrive and the snow to melt. This year (maybe it’s because it is so cold out today) I am especially ready. I know that a large part of that is all of the preparation that goes into planning for events and the new ideas that come from each break in the calendar. We will have some cool upgrades at our championships this year. We started putting up temporary hole signage at each teeing ground a few years ago, but we are getting some updated inserts made for those, two sets of which will be specific to certain championships. Totally new this year, will be an enhanced experience at the driving range. We have purchased IGA logo’d range ball bags. Those bags will be filled and stationed at a covered table and logo’d tent each day. Players can simply walk up, grab a bag of golf balls and start warming up. We have also purchased two very large screen tvs to display leaderboards, as well as show video, pictures, and/or sponsor images while on site at events. We are considering the purchase of other signage that can be placed around the facility as well. 18 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue
Individually these things would have a small impact, but when combined together with all that we have done in the last few years (such as adding caddie bibs last year) we feel it adds greatly to the player experience. Our goal is to make the player’s feel as though they are playing in an event much different (and more important) than most anything else they would play in that year. Maybe that will add a bit to the anxiety level on the first tee for some, but we are willing to accept that consequence ;). The “Player Experience” is something we discuss a lot as a staff. We try to imagine exactly what a person experiences from the time they pull into the parking lot to the time they leave after their final round. What does that feel like to that person? Can they tell something ‘big’ is going on? The goal is always to keep adding to our experience so that our participants become our biggest advertisers. If we can pull that off, then we should always see our entry numbers rise. Taking it a bit more specific, we are planning some exciting things at the Iowa Amateur this year. Our host - Wakonda Club - will begin their year-long celebration of their 100th anniversary as a club in 2021. We will have some historical information, pictures, and signage throughout the grounds the week of the Iowa Amateur celebrating the history. 2021 will be the 6th Iowa Amateur the club has hosted (1926, ‘51, ‘60, ‘95, ‘05), so don’t be
surprised to see images relating to those past champions spread around the grounds in late July. Finally, a new addition that is not specifically related to championships - our podcast has launched! You can find it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and many other platforms. Just search for “Greenside - Iowa Golf Association” and it should pop up. Please help us out by listening and then giving it a rating. We are looking forward to including updates and commentary on all things “Iowa Golf”, including Iowa PGA Section events. I’m certain we will have a few of you on as guests throughout the year, particularly those of you that will be hosting IGA championships. A new episode will be released at least once a week (hopefully, more than that). Please let us know what you think. Now, time to go back and sit by the fire and count the days until spring arrives. It will be here sooner than we all think.

Mateo Rascon to Compete at Augusta National Golf Club The year of 2020 put a pause on Mateo Rascon from Burlington, Iowa competeing in the 2020 Drive, Chip and Putt Championship at Augusta National Golf Club the week of The Masters in April. Rascon qualified for regionals Sept. 8 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colorado by finishing second at a sub-regional on Sunday at Glen Oaks Golf Club In West Des Moines, Iowa. Rascon is no stranger to Augusta National Golf Club. He competed at the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals held at the course in 2017. He finished in second in his age group. Rascon led after the driving and chipping portions. He scored a 38 in driving and a 35 in chipping. But Chance Rinkol caught fire on the green, knocking all three of his putts to within two inches to overtake Rascon, who scored a 45 to Rinkol’s 60 in putting. That left Rinkol with a 127 total to Rascon’s 118. Rascon advanced to the sub-regional by winning the Boys 14-15 division at a local qualifier July 17 at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City. Rascon developed a love for the sport at an early age. For additional Stories on Mateo below: Burlington Junior Golfer to take second swing at Drive,Chip & Putt National Finals in 2021. Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program
How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work? Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
Charlie Burkart Scholarship The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.
