Iowa PGA Executive Director: Greg Mason, PGA
A Message From The Iowa PGA
Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA | Executive Director Happy Winter and looking forward to Spring. Iowa has been embraced in a record setting snow fall in 2019. It is hard to believe that in a few short weeks we will be playing golf on lush green fairways and greens. Our two youngsters featured in this magazine will be attempting to win the Drive, Chip & Putt at Augusta National. Hang in there, Spring, and the birds chirping, is just around the corner. This is our second edition of our all NEW Iowa PGA Golf Magazine. We will be producing this valuable golf magazine on a quarterly basis. We hope to bring you more timely results along with some human-interest stories related to our Iowa Golfers. For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page within the pages of our magazine – it’s on Page 30. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email Kevin Quinn, kquinn@pgahq.com or myself, gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well. Our popular GIVE program is starting its 12th year. This is a partnership with Riverside Casino & Golf Resort and the Iowa PGA where we help to improve veteran’s lives through the game of golf. We partner with the VA in Iowa City and the wonderful providers and health care specialists in affecting our honorable Veterans. We have expanded by adding in two other locations - Des Moines and Larchwood. One must go through the VA to be eligible for the GIVE Program. On November 11, 2018, Mark Burke of Warrior Run in Norwalk was privileged to have a Freedom Rock dedicated at his golf course. If you get a chance to view this wonderful piece of art, please do as it will make the hair on your neck stand up. If you would like to donate to GIVE or the Freedom Rock, please give me a call or send me an email, gmason@pgahq.com. Above all, thank a Veteran by voice or the simple gesture of your hand to your heart followed by an open hand to them. Do this in an airport sometime, they know! In 2019 take the opportunity to play more golf with family, friends; better yet, grab someone new and introduce them to the game we all love. Have a great 2019. Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

President Report
Aaron Krueger: President’s Report
Aaron Krueger, PGA President, Iowa PGA Director of Golf, Wakonda Club We are about to begin another golf season in Iowa. It’s extremely exciting to see the grass start to green, the leaves bud out on the trees and the flowers begin to bloom each Spring. Equally exciting for golfers are all of the new opportunities that lie ahead this upcoming season. Most golfers - myself included - hope to record a personal best score or play more rounds than last year. There is always an excitement and anticipation of a new season! One of the best opportunities to play more golf this year is by purchasing an Iowa PGA Golf Pass. With an Iowa PGA Golf Pass, you will receive discounts for golf, cart fees, range balls and more at over 250 facilities across Iowa and Western Illinois. There’s a private facility section that gives you access to some of our section’s private clubs along with discounts to the two tour events in the Iowa PGA, the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic and the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic. The best part of the Iowa PGA Golf Pass is the benefits that the American Cancer Society receives. 15% of all Iowa PGA Golf Passes sold are given to the American Cancer Society, which has resulted in more than $90,000 donated since 2014. Your purchase will save lives! I’m honored to serve as President of the Iowa PGA and am looking forward to a great golf season. I encourage everyone to get out and play more this year so that you can continue to enjoy this wonderful game.
See you on the course,

Iowa Turfgrass Institute
Message From the Iowa Turfgrass Institute
Randy Robinson | Executive Director | Iowa Turfgrass Institute Dear Friends and Colleagues in Golf: It’s Rounds4Research time again! Time when golf facilities can “buy” a lot for a little by donating a foursome to help fund turfgrass research here in Iowa. That research makes your golf course more sustainable, both economically and environmentally. It is simply the most cost-effective “insurance” you can get against turfgrass pests, diseases and other threats, yet all it costs is one tee time. Please take a moment to donate a foursome for this year’s Rounds4Research auction, running from April 29 to May 5. We are blessed, as Iowans, to have some of the most celebrated researchers in the country at Iowa State University. The benefit of their work is evident in the turfgrass health on courses across the region, and beyond. But as pests and diseases evolve under changing weather patterns, some answers that applied just a few years ago are no longer as effective, and new challenges emerge. That is why continued research is critical for the ongoing health and vitality, not just for your turfgrass bout of your facility at large. On behalf of the Iowa GCSA Board of Directors, I want to thank those facilities that donated in 2018. We were able to donate around $2000 to Iowa State University’s turfgrass research efforts. Considering we netted only a couple hundred dollars the year before, we are very excited to continue the trend of growth of this fund in 2019. If you think about it, the money raised is just a fraction of what could be done if every facility stepped up to the tee. So, please be a part of this year’s auction and protect your course and your facility, and all the jobs and economic activity they generate. Once you have the approval of your facility, donating is a simple and straight forward process. You can visit these websites for more information: •
Guide to Rounds 4 Research
• Rounds 4 Research FAQ Sheet You can also visit www.eifg.org and use the donate tab. You can donate up until the start of the auction, but please donate ASAP.

Fun, Nerves and Everything in Between
Fun, Nerves and Everything in Between
22 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue
By: Kevin Quinn IAPGA Communications Coordinator
Fun, Nerves and Everything in Between In the golf world the month of April belongs to one tournament. A tournament that for the last 84 years has featured some of the best players, story lines and performances. The Masters has come to be known as, “a tradition unlike any other,” to all golf fans. But, before we get to one of golf’s biggest spectacles, Augusta National will host 80 junior golfers for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. Among those 80 participates are Taya Belloma and Isaac Rumler, both of which qualified through the Iowa PGA’s Drive, Chip and Putt events in 2018. Taya Belloma, like many young kids, is involved with a handful of sports at the age of nine. She plays golf, softball, basketball and is also involved in bowling, but golf was her first passion as she picked up the game at the age of one. “She started when she was about one and half. That’s when I started taking her with me,” said Taya’s father, Alex Belloma. “She had plastic clubs at first. She would go out and hit those around a little bit. She would play in the bunkers and sort of mess around here and there. When she was around two, I cut down a 7-iron and let her use that. She just enjoyed going with me all the time.” “I’ve always enjoyed golf,” said Taya. “It’s fun to play and I like playing with dad.” Taya’s love for golf at such a young age lead her father to search for ways to get her more involved in golf and gain experience in what it’s like to compete in golf. In the end, he landed on Drive, Chip and Putt as the starting point for Taya. “I thought Drive Chip and Putt would be a great experience for Taya,” said Alex, “I thought it would be good to give her more of a tournament feel and compete a little bit more. I was trying to get her more exposure to the game and the competitiveness.” Taya has participated in Drive, Chip and Putt the last three years since discovering the program. At the age of seven, Taya won the her first ever local qualifier for her age division and advanced to the Sub-Regional qualifier at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, but did not advance to the Regional Final. Last year, Taya won the local qualifier at Waterloo and placed second at the Sub-Regional qualifier at Warrior Run Golf Course to advance to the Regional qualifier in Minnesota. Taya didn’t fair well in her first Regional Final, but she took it in stride and used it as a learning experience to prevail this year. “The Regional qualifier in Minnesota was scary,” said Taya. “We had to walk down the stairs while everyone else stayed at the top and watched, but I think it probably got me ready for this year.” “I think that experience was a little overwhelming for her,” said Alex. “But I also think it was a good experience for her and taught her a few things.” The experience proved to help Taya this year as she finished second at the Warrior Run local qualifier on August 5 with a total score of 52. Her 15 in the driving competition was the highest in her age group. She carded 11 points at the chip station and 26 points in the putt competition. www.iowapga.com 23
Fun, Nerves and Everything in Between At the Sub-Regional at Glen Oaks Country Club, Taya recorded 89 points, prevailing over the second-place finisher by 37 points. Taya recorded the highest point totals in each station, finishing with 27 points in the drive station, 21 points at the chip station and 41 points in the putt competition.
I first saw Drive, Chip and Putt on a commercial during the Masters. I looked into it and saw there was one at TPC Deere Run, which is close to our house and it’s free. I thought it was a really awesome opportunity to go out and see what a real golf course looks like.”
On September 29, Taya conquered the Regional qualifier that stood in her way last year as she accumulated 86 points and the highest point total in the drive competition (23). She also recorded 36 points at the chip station and 27 points in the putt competition to secure her spot in the National Final at Augusta National.
Isaac has since participated in Drive, Chip and Putt three times. He qualified for the Regional Final last year, but didn’t advance onto the National Finals. Isaac first competed in Drive, Chip and Putt when he was seven, but didn’t qualify out of the local qualifier. Nonetheless, Isaac has stuck with golf, progressing each year and most importantly having fun.
“I usually practice 2-4 times a week during the summer,” said Taya. “I usually practice all three skills, but the driving competition is definitely my favorite. I like hitting my driver and I also like meeting all the people.”
“This is my third year doing Drive, Chip and Putt,” said Isaac. “Last year I made it to the Regional Final but didn’t advance. The first time I was the youngest in my age division and didn’t qualify out of the local qualifier. I think playing those years helped me this Like Taya, Isaac is involved in many sports, including basketball, soccer, hockey and golf. He also got introduced to golf at a year. I think I learned a little bit from both of them. I’ll probably keep playing Drive Chip and Putt until I’m 15. young age by his father. I love it. I like the pressure and meeting new people. “I started playing golf when I was three,” said Isaac. “I just went It’s super fun.” out to the course with my dad and started playing. At the Regional qualifier he totaled 126 points to win his age division. Rumler finished with 31 points at the drive station, 50 points at the chip station and 45 points in the putt competition. Rumler’s 126 points won his age division by two points and punched his ticket to the National Final.
“I’m going to try and practice as much as I can,” said Taya. “I’m going to practice at the gym where my dad works, and try to get outside as much as possible.” “We have a practice area downstairs setup,” said Isaac. “We have some turf down there and a comforter set up. I just hit balls into that occasionally.” Nerves and excitement alike have begun to set in for Taya and Isaac as they prepare to embark on the same coveted grounds that the PGA TOUR’s finest will take too a week later. “I’m really excited for the Finals,” said Taya. “I can’t really explain it. I’m a little nervous.” “I’m definitely excited,” said Isaac. “I’m excited to meet the Pros and get the free stuff and the free snacks.”
Isaac and his family are aware of the pressure Although this is a competition and each age diand stress that Drive, Chip and Putt can pose. They like to keep things vision will crown winners at the end, the focus of light and not add on the pressure that is already present. Both Taya and Isaac are preparing for Augusta in the best ways they can with the cold weather in Iowa and Illinois. However, they are both aware that April is right around the corner.

John Deere Classic - Birdies for Charity
How the John Deere Classic Became One of the TOUR’s Biggest Charities By: Clair Peterson John Deere Classic Tournament Director
In light of the PGA Tour’s recent announcement that it helped raise $190 million for charity in 2018, it seems like an opportune time for the John Deere Classic to let our fellow Iowa PGA members know that we contributed a record $13.45 million to the cause. Located along the Iowa-Illinois border at TPC Deere Run, the John Deere Classic is consistently ranked among the top three tournaments in terms of charitable giving on Tour - this despite being in a market of only 375,000 people, the smallest on the circuit.
But scores of smaller charities also benefited: local churches, schools, orchestras, theater groups, art museums, food pantries, child-focused health care But scores of smaller charities also benefited: local churches, schools, orchestras, theater groups, art museums, food pantries, child-focused health care organizations, high school golf teams, libraries, veteran support groups, and so on. Whether they raised $1 million or $1,000, the money means a lot. What accounts for such success?
And when it comes to per capita donations, the John Deere Classic has been No. 1 for 20 years. In 2018, the tournament’s Birdies for Charity program raised a record $35.88 per resident of the Quad Cities area, which is anchored by Moline and Rock Island in Illinois and by Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. The money went to 534 charities of all sizes and interests. There were the big ones everyone knows: United Way, American Red Cross, Susan B. Komen.
28 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue
First, John Deere underwrites the administrative costs of the Birdies for Charity program. This means that participating charities are able to keep 100 percent of the money they raise because they don’t have the burden of fundraising costs. Typically, even a highly-efficient charity spends 15 percent of the money it raises on administrative costs.
John Deere Classic - Birdies for Charity
Second, each participating charity receives a bonus on top of the money they raise themselves. While the minimum bonus is five percent, this year’s was 8.2 percent. In recent years, the bonus has been 10 percent. The bonus comes from tournament revenues, a matching grant by the John Deere Foundation, direct donations and money raised via special events, such as a Wednesday night concert. So, zero administrative costs and a guaranteed five percent bonus means the effective dollar contribution to the charity is a minimum of 20 percent more than it would be under the customary fundraising structure. Local foundations have recognized what a good deal this is – especially in a low-interest rate environment - and have been pouring money into their favorite causes via the Birdies program. Third, community. Birdies for Charity is now and always has been a grassroots operation. Each charity is responsible for raising its own donations. The built-in economic incentives of the Birdies program push charities to do their best. And, perhaps because they live in a smaller community, Quad Cities residents are especially sensitive to the needs of their friends and neighbors, making them willing to share what they have. It’s heartening to live in a community where so many are so willing to help others. (Check out our list of charities at www.johndeereclassic.com). It’s also important to have a tournament sponsor in John Deere that’s serious about its commitment to corporate citizenship. The tournament has raised $107 million since its founding in 1971, with more than 99 percent generated since John Deere assumed title sponsorship in 1998. (It might surprise you to learn that the John Deere Classic is now the third-longest sponsor on the PGA Tour). Over the years, the tournament itself has been compelling, too, thanks to a few key factors. In 2004, the R&A granted the John Deere Classic the final exemption to the British Open. In 2008, the John Deere Classic sponsored a charter jet to transport players to the British Open direct from Quad City International Airport. And since 2002, the tournament has made a priority of awarding sponsor exemptions to up-and-coming young stars, including Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Patrick Reed. This year, Southern California native Michael Kim will defend his title from July 11-14 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. We invite all Iowa PGA members – along with their families, friends, students and club members – to join us.
