A Message From Greg Mason

Happy New Year to each of you. I would like to talk/write about the word OPPORTUNITY. Defined as… • a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something; or • a situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal.

Junior Golfers – we have a multitude of opportunities for Junior golfers in the Iowa PGA. Whether that junior is playing at the highest level or one that is just experiencing golf for the first time. • Junior Tour/Pee Wee Tour – in its 21st year of administering golf opportunities for that junior golfer throughout Iowa and Western Illinois in a fun, competitive atmosphere. The Principal Charity Classic will begin its 11th year as Title Sponsor of our tour. Did you know they raised over $4.3 million dollars for #IowaKids in 2018? That’s opportunity in a big way. • Iowa PGA Junior Academy – in its 39th year, a week-long golf camp where that Junior Golfer has an opportunity to craft friendships for a life-time while receiving instruction from PGA Professionals. Ask PGA Professional Judd Gibb (Lakeside Golf Course) about the opportunity he had as a youngster that led to a stellar playing and professional career in golf. • PGA Jr League – an initiative by the PGA of America to deliver golf in a team setting. A great experience not only for the junior golf in your family but for the whole family to be a part of. • Drive, Chip & Putt – a partnership with other golf associations to deliver a fast, competitive event where you have an opportunity to compete at Augusta National.

Opportunity is always just around the corner. You will see a common theme throughout this magazine; each grabbed the OPPORTUNITY whether by the circumstances given or goal they set. Starting with our latest Iowa PGA Member inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, Larry Gladson. President Report

Aaron Krueger: President’s Report We provide enjoyment and recreation; and in doing so, we connect with many wonderful people. How can this profession not be rewarding with all of the ways we positively impact people?! The PGA has provided me life-long friendships, invaluable education, chances to travel to places I’ve only dreamed of, the ability to contribute to the profession and governance, and It’s hard to believe the calendar has turned over opportunities to compete at the highest levels. I’m forever thankful to the PGA of America for another year and it’s now 2019. 2018 was a challenging year in many ways. But I’m excited what I’ve already been able to experience in this profession. for all we have to look forward to in the new 2019 season.

you think should consider a career in golf. A personal connection and testimony of what the PGA has done for you could influence someone to become a PGA Professional and pursue a career in the Golf Business. I’m thankful for the influence that my mentors, Steve Reilly and Todd Smith had on me, and I hope to provide that same encouragement to many of my junior golfers.

To circle back and answer the original questions – YES, I would absolutely become a PGA Professional if I could start over. And I will absolutely encourage my daughter to consider a career as a PGA Professional. I’m thankful for the opportunities that I have had and would love to see this game impact others as much as it has impacted me. Odds are, a PGA Professional has positively impacted your life in some way.

Whether you are a PGA Professional, an avid golfer, one of the over 8,000 boys and girls who played on an Iowa High School Golf Team or the parent of an Iowa PGA Junior Tour member, I’d encourage you to consider what a career in golf would look like for you or someone you know.

These numbers show an incredible opportunity for young PGA Members & Associates, both in the Iowa Section and nationwide. Another thing that stands out about 2018 was the addition of the Youth on Course program. This program removes the financial barrier for kids to play the game of golf. The basic premise is that it subsidizes rounds of golf at participating courses for juniors. It was started by the Northern California Golf Association back in 2006 and in 2018, Iowa became the 21st state to participate. Our numbers were solid in our first year. We had nearly 100 kids sign up for the yearly membership and nearly 300 rounds played throughout the state. We hope to more than double the number of kids we have and at least triple the number of rounds in 2019. We think this is the most important program around the country to grow the game amongst our youth and we are very proud to be a part of it. Look for a lot more information on Youth on Course this offseason as it will be a focus for us to get more courses signed up as well as get more information out so that more kids take advantage. Finally, I would like to wrap up by thanking all of the wonderful volunteer help we had this year. We are led by a great group of men and women that make up our Board of Directors. We have many more serving on various committees that help guide the policies and procedures we follow. There is a core group of dedicated tournament officials, most all of which are now rules certified, that help at our championships and qualifiers. We have over 50 men and women that volunteer to perform course and slope ratings at golf courses all around the state each year. We say this a lot, but we simply could not be the organization we need to be without their time and effort. We owe each and every one of them a big “thank you” for their help. We look forward to improving ourselves and the IGA in 2019. We also look to continue to work with the Iowa PGA on various initiatives, such as tourism and golf related legislative issues. And, we are hoping for just a bit nicer weather! I hope to see you all on the golf courses early this spring.

Iowa Turfgrass Institute

Message From the Iowa Turfgrass Institute

Randy Robinson | Executive Director | Iowa Turfgrass Institute This time of year, your Superintendent will be concentrating on finishing up summer projects, planning to start fall projects, and looking forward to some much deserved relaxation time. That doesn’t mean that he/she isn’t working in the winter months though. I used to tell people when they asked me, what do you do all winter? “Well, in the summer I am in a hurry to do everything; in the winter, I don’t get in a hurry to do anything.” It’s a balance that has to take place to avoid stress. Your Superintendent is, in my opinion, the backbone of the course. Who takes care of more square footage than anyone else? Who takes care of the very surface that you are playing on, day in and day out? That’s right, the Superintendent. That being said, there are many important roles at the course. A good, healthy relationship between the General Manager, the Pro, the Chef, and all the included staff makes the whole operation even more successful. There is no job more important than the other, but none of them work well without the other, that I know for sure. Whether you are the Assistant Pro or the Assistant Superintendent, you have one mission, to make the golfer’s time at your facility more enjoyable then they thought and for the golfer to come back again and again.

This winter we will have numerous educational opportunities, whether it’s at the annual Iowa Turfgrass Conference or at the Iowa GCSA Winter Seminar. This is a time for your Superintendent to reconnect with fellow Superintendents, to refresh on continuing education, to learn from experts about new trends and to bring those back to your facility, for the golfer. Encourage your Superintendent to take time to attend these opportunities, it will be well worth it. Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the golf courses in the state that donated to the Iowa GCSA Rounds for Research fund. Your donated rounds helped us raise nearly $2000 to go towards research at Iowa State University. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Last but not least, thank you to the Iowa Golf Association and the Iowa Section PGA for their continued support of the Iowa GCSA and the Iowa Turfgrass Institute. Like I said before, successful golf is a collaborative effort of all the facets of the game. He added two more bogeys on the fifth and ninth holes, but got his first birdie on the tournament on the par-4 7th hole. The struggles continued as McCarty bogeyed holes 10 and 11 before carding backto-back birdies on Nos. 13-14. After another bogey on the par-4 15th hole, McCarty fired off three straight pars to close out his round at 4-over-par 70.

Sitting right on the cutline, McCarty birdied the ninth hole (his final hole) in the second round to get back to 3-under-par and make the cut. “Another goal I’ve had was to get through Monday qualifying for the John Deere (Classic),” said McCarty. “I also wanted to make the cut for once at the John Deere (Classic), so it was nice to finally do that. TPC Deere Run has always been tough for me to walk and play well.”

McCarty missed the 54-hole at the John Deere Classic and finished the tournament at 2-under-par 139. “I played well this year in Section events as well as at the national level,” said McCarty.” “Playing in the John Deere Classic really gave me some confidence for this year. Knowing I can compete with the TOUR players really prepped me for the PGA Championship.” The 2018 season featured a lot of top-finishes for McCarty, who competed in 15 Iowa PGA events this season. He had 11 top-five finishes including wins at the Brad Wuhs Pro-Pro, Junior Academy Stroke Play, Boy Scouts Pro-Am, Pro-Junior and the Fall Education and Pro-Pro. McCarty also finished second at the Iowa PGA Professional Championship, T7 at the Waterloo Open and T15 at the Cedar Rapids Open. “My game was pretty solid all year,” said McCarty. “My goal this year was to improve my driving accuracy and putting consistency, which I have. “They still need some work, but they were better than they have been in past years.”

Woltman Wins 85th Iowa Open Blue Top Ridge| Riverside, IA| August 1-3, 2018

Dan Woltman of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin won the 85th Iowa Open after carding a 6-under-par 66 in the final round. Woltman beat out amateur, Tripp Kinney by two-strokes. “You can get a lot of birdies on this golf course,” said Woltman. “There was no wind today and the greens were soft and rolling so well. I knew someone was going to have a low round in front of me. I just tried to stay patient and continued to hit fairways and greens. Luckily it was enough to win.” Woltman started the final round in second place, one stroke off the lead, after carding a 2-under-par 70 in round one and an 8-under-par 64 in round two.

34 Iowa Golf Magazine - Fall/Winter Issue

“I know more about failure than anyone else,” said Woltman. “When you play this game for a living, you lose 90 percent of the time. You don’t win very often. It feels good to get a win. It feels like all the hard work I’ve been putting in is getting validated.” Woltman finished the tournament with 16 birdies, 38 pars, and no bogeys. He played the par-3s at even par for the tournament and was 9-under-par on par-4s and 7-under-par on par5s throughout the three days. “I felt good the last couple of weeks, “said Woltman. “I had a good final round last week in Cedar Rapids that propelled me into this week. I’ve played my last 72-holes bogey-free.
