Iowa PGA Executive Director: Greg Mason, PGA
A Message From Greg Mason We are trying to not forget all the great play we had in 2019 as well. Chad Proehl, Urbandale, played in the 2019 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and Jeff Schmid, Iowa City played in that Championship as well as the week before at the 2019 PGA Championship.
Iowa PGA Executive Director Iowa PGA Golf Magazine – Winter Review of 2020 What a year 2020 was. We got behind a little with our Digital-Magazine in 2020. We are just producing our first one since last February when we did a review of the 2019 season. We will endeavor to get back to the Quarterly format we were used to in the past. Many of you probably played more golf in 2020 than you had in previous years. I know that our PGA Member facilities were very grateful to see an uptick in golf rounds. They did a nice job of managing the new rules/ guidelines that were in place. But then golfers are used to rules. We thank each of you for helping those facilities follow those rules/ guidelines. This magazine will cover an interview we did with Sean and Mundi McCarty on their experiences at the 2019, yes 2019, PGA Cup. Sean was the first IowaPGA Professional to compete in those matches. He was part of a historic comeback by the US Team over Great Britain and Ireland. Though this was in 2019, we wanted to cover the story anyway from last Spring. Judd Gibb, from Ft. Dodge, participated in the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park. Quite the experience with no spectators at the Championship. Former Cedar Rapids Gazette Sports Columnist and PGA Historian Emeritus Bob Denney wrote a nice article on Judd that we wanted to share with each of you. Enjoy Bob’s unique writing and to Judd’s comments.
For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page within the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319648-0026 as well.
In 2021 Gibb, Proehl and Schmid will play in the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa, OK. In spite of the different year we had in 2020, many of our IowaPGA Members continue to compete at the highest levels of the game. We congratulate them for this great play over the past Have fun, Play Well eighteen months. “Mase” As you read this magazine, enjoy the celebration of our 2020 IowaPGA Award Winners highlighted by our PGA Professional of the Year Joe Butler. Butler’s career covers a couple of decades of great golf and outstanding service to his membership at the Burlington Golf Club. We are very proud of “Joe Pro” and all that he has accomplished. At the IowaPGA we love our Junior Tour/ Pee Wee Tour as were thankful to be able to administer so many events starting in June of 2020. The Junior golfers continue to be an inspiration to each other and for sure our staff and interns. Remember some of the names listed in this magazine as you may see them on TV in the not too distant future. We did lose a few IowaPGA Members in the past year. Past IowaPGA Presidents Jerry “Big Sky” Johnson (Elmwood CC), Ed “Shoe” Schumann (Sunnyside CC) and Gary “Red Dog” Lockie (Taylor Made) left their mark on golf in the IowaPGA and to scores of PGA Professionals. We will miss their laughter and smiles at our many Section events. Finally, I would like to thank our talented IowaPGA Staff for all of the hard work, perseverance and dedication. You can’t find a more cohesive group in 2020. With the support of our Section Officers and Board, our staff continues to a deliver high-level events to our Section Professionals and to the Junior Golfers throughout our Section.

Joe Butler of Burlington Golf Club has been named the 2020 Iowa PGA Golf Professional of the Year. The Golf Professional of the Year Award is the highest honor paid to an Iowa PGA Golf Professional. 2020 Charlie Burkart Scholarship Recipient The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and Head PGA Professional at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students in furthering their education. At least one high school graduate will be the 2020 Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,500 per year for four years. Other previously graduated applicants will be reviewed with additional scholarships awarded when possible.
Congratulations to North Liberty, IA native, Brandon McCarty on being selected as the 2020 Charlie Burkart Scholarship honoree by the Iowa PGA Foundation Charlie Burkart Scholarship committee. “I am very honored and appreciative that I was selected as the 2020 Charlie Burkhart Scholarship winner. This award will be a tremendous help as I continue my academic and golf career at the next level, McCarty said.” In college he plans to play golf and major in Business with a minor in Finance. McCarty will start his golf and college career at Kirkwood, with the goal to transfer to a D1 school after year two. Following college, his dream would be to continue to play golf at the Professional level. Knowing that this road is extremely difficult, his backup plan would be to become a PGA Teaching Professional and manage a golf course. The game of golf has meant so much to McCarty growing up. He credits the game of golf for shaping his character. Three of the most important lessons he has learned from golf are etiquette, patience and integrity. These lessons have not only made his golf game better but will also help him be a better person moving forward. Golf is also an escape for McCarty. It allows him the ability to pour his passion into something he absolutely loves to do. Golf will continue to play a role in his future life. Coming from a golf centered family, McCarty understands the hard work that this sport requires and what it takes to get to the next level. This will set him up well for college golf and beyond. He also knows that golf will always be a sport that will continue to guide his character. Because golf is a sport of integrity, it teaches one to always make the right choices on the course. He will be a student athlete at Kirkwood so McCarty will not be able to work while going to school. Therefore, this scholarship is a true blessing to McCarty and his family as it will reduce the financial burden, which will allow him to focus on his schoolwork and golf. Coming from a golfing family McCarty was born with a passion for golf. His dad, Chad McCarty and his Uncle, Sean McCarty, were both members of the University of Iowa Golf Team. Both have continued to be top players in the State of, Iowa, so it was only natural that McCarty developed a love for the game of golf. Before he could even walk, he was trying to swing the club. Because of this drive for golf he became a member of the Iowa www.iowapga.com

Iowa PGA Awards PGA Pee Wee Tour at the age of 8. Since this time, he has continued to play on the Iowa PGA Junior Tour, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, as well as the Iowa City Golf Association events. McCarty had a successful high school golf career. He was the team captain and top golfer on the Clear Creek-Amana high school team since his Freshman year. Other high school golf accomplishments include individual state qualifier Sophomore and Junior year, 1st Team All-State Junior year, 1st Team All-Conference Sophomore and Junior years, All Conference Honorable Mention Freshman year, Academic All-Conference Sophomore and Junior years, KGYM/Sheet Metal Workers Athlete of the Week, Des Moines Register All-Iowa Elite Team Honorable Mention Junior year, as well as a varsity letter winner each year. His goal for this year was to become the 3A state golf champion, before Covid-19 hit and took the season away. Congratulations Brandon McCarty on receiving this award. “I have known the McCarty family for over 20 years, and they consistently display strong family values and teach a sense of community in their children. They would do anything for you and have shown time and again that they are a great addition to any community. His parents are a great support team for anything he pursues, and he has always strived to be the best.” Brian Wernimont, PGA Professional, Brown Deer Golf Club. In addition to golf McCarty played basketball and ran cross-country in High School. He was a 4-year letter winner on a team that went to the state cross country championship four times. In addition, he won the 2019 cross country Most Valuable Teammate Award and was Academic All-Conference his Junior and Senior years. For basketball McCarty won the Offensive MVP award his Freshman year and the Coaches Award his Sophomore year. In addition to athletics, academics have been a priority for McCarty in high school. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the honor roll each year Brad Fox, Principal at Clear Creek Amana had some nice words to say about Brandon. “He leads by example with his positive outlook and the integrity he shows on and off the course. Brandon is someone I want my son to look up to and emulate in school, on the golf course, and in life.”
2020 Charlie Burkart Scholarship Recipient Second year in a row Baliee Flory has been rewarded the Charlie Burkart Scholarship. Flory started her golf career at Waverly-Shell Rock High School before attending Wartburg College. At Wartburg she excelled on the golf team including playing at the NCAA Division III National Finals in 2019. After serving an internship with the Iowa PGA Section in the summer of 2018, she was hired that Fall as the Tournament Assistant. Flory was then promoted to Junior Golf Coordinator in October of 2019. Flory left her position as the Junior Golf Coordinator to take a position as the Associate Golf Professional/Tournament Coordinator at Amana Colonies Golf Club in March 2020. “Thank you to the Charlie Burkart Scholarship committee for granting me this scholarship,” Flory continues “I’m grateful to be the recipient so I can continue to further my education through the PGM Program and become a PGA Professional.

Iowa Golf Association
A Message From the Iowa Golf Association Chad Pitts | Executive Director | IGA
I think most of us have had enough of 2020, so let’s not even go there. 2021... you’re up! We have some exciting new things coming to the Iowa Golf Association next year. Bill Dickens, IGA Senior Director of Administration and Executive Director from 2001 to 2015 transitioned into full retirement at the end of 2020. As I write this, we are just wrapping up the hiring process for the person who will be replacing Bill on our staff. We are going to miss Bill around the office. He has been with the IGA for nearly 20 years and brought a wealth of knowledge and experience. He has been a great mentor to all of the IGA staff members and we hope to still see him from time to time as a volunteer at IGA events. The negative of the loss of Bill from the staff brings the positive of a new member - specifically a new Director of Competitions. We are not ready to announce who it is yet, but we know it is going to be a great addition to our team. As part of this transition process with Bill’s retirement, we are shifting some roles around amongst the current staff. Bill’s primary functions were day-to-day bookkeeping/banking, handling some IGA Foundation items and he was the staff per son in charge of USGA Qualifying. Katelynn
Hogenson will be taking over much of the day-to-day bookkeeping, I will take on his duties with our Foundation and the new staff member will take point on USGA qualifiers. This means that Nate McCoy will get more of the GHIN duties that Katelynn had been in charge of and Clint Brown will take on more responsibility with the IGA Foundation. It’s a big carousel of duties being shifted around. However, even though we have specific job descriptions we also understand that everyone will have a hand in all we do. We are just too small of a group to be restricted to one task or department. We will make sure you all get to know our newest addition once we are ready to announce it publicly. Another addition for 2021 will be an IGA produced podcast. We plan to release a new episode at least weekly. We will focus mostly on golf related subject matter, but it will not be restricted to IGA activities. Our goal is to highlight all things golf - including Iowa Section PGA tournaments and happenings - in a fun and relaxed way.
our guests. Right now we are recording some episodes, but we do not plan to release anything until after the first of the year. Part of this process is learning how to make the best possible recordings for an enjoyable listen. Oh, and we are still trying to decide on the name! You can be sure once we figure this out we will make it well known so you can find it and give it a try. Finally, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. I really hope we all get to enjoy plenty of time with our loved ones this year.
We will have episodes that go deep into the rules of golf and handicapping, some will focus on the Hall of Fame and history within our state, golf course superintendent related items but most of the time we will be just “talking golf”. I’m sure from time to time we will ask many of you to be www.iowapga.com

Iowa PGA Awards
2020 Iowa PGA
Assistant Professional of the Year Jacob Shultz, Associate Jacob Shultz of Blue Top Ridge has been named the 2020 Iowa PGA Assistant Professional of the Year. This honor is based on the professional’s entire record with emphasis on his performance and achievements over the past year. This is the highest honor paid to an assistant golf professional and the award committee determined this winner based on strength as a player, teacher, merchandiser, and overall golf professional, the contributions to the success of the nominees facility, the nominees contributions to the game of golf, the character of the nominee and respect for other professionals, example of professionals who have enhanced their careers through the nominee, the nominee’s ability to play golf and the previous Section awards or community involvement activities. “This award means a great deal to me. I feel honored to be among many hard working assistant professionals in this section considered for this award. Thank you to David Crawley and the selection committee for their careful consideration. Additionally, I want to thank Bryan Haas and Mike McNamara for their support and giving me valuable leadership opportunities,” Shultz stated about winning this Award. Shultz’s path to becoming a more well-rounded golf professional started with his mentors Bryan Haas and Michael McNamara believing in Shultz and hiring him as an assistant professional as well as a supervisor within the casino and resort. As Shultz entered the PGM program he was supported and given new roles in order to gain specialized experience.
In his first year, he set up for GIVE foundation classes and volunteered as an instructor. Early on, Shultz took an interest in helping injured veterans with their swings regardless of their obstacles. Later on, he realized how valuable that opportunity was to a budding professional. Shultz also acted as a tournament assistant and prepared cart signs, rules sheets, and flag events for golf outings. Following the events, he would help score the event depending on the size of the group. In 2020, Shultz has accomplished many personal and professional goals. The first was to become more involved with our Iowa PGA Section. Apart from helping as a host to section tournaments and the Iowa Open, he has joined the Assistant’s Association headed by Mike Armes. Shultz has taken a particular interest in education of current and future assistants going through the PGM program and given feedback on how educational programming should evolve for future students. He has also taken initiative by representing Blue Top Ridge and playing in a handful of section events this season.
While serving at Blue Top Ridge, Shultz has collaborated with the professional staff by developing a season long marketing plan and loyalty program in order to generate more business for their resort. This plan used GHIN handicap as a way to promote playing more golf and building a foundation for player development and tournament participation. Each month has a highlight for player development paired with a promotional offering. Shultz partnered with the resorts social media specialist to promote golf events such as DIVA Golf Days and The Big Cup Tournament at the end of the year. With this plan, he has seen much success in a year filled with such uncertainly due to the national pandemic. On that note, he has helped to put special policies and procedures in place at his facility to keep golf cars clean and in good repair. He has been active in interviewing, hiring, training and scheduling new employees. Each and every day he channels his passion for the game of golf to serve others around him and elevate his facility to its highest potential. www.iowapga.com 13
Iowa Turfgrass Institute
Message From the Iowa Turfgrass Institute
We Are Just About There…. Remember in April, May, and June we all thought, I can’t wait for 2021?!? Well, we are nearly there and not a whole lot has changed. We are still isolating ourselves as much as possible, still having difficulty figuring out who people are behind the mask, and the six-foot rule has become the new “norm”. I felt bad for those that didn't have any sort of release or a way to have fun without the possibility of contaminating someone. Luckily, for most of the readers, you have had a way to have fun…..Golf. Golf has been deemed the safest way to enjoy the outdoors and play a sport. It’s not surprising though, I mean, who doesn’t use golf to socially distance, to get away, to forget about work and home for just a few hours. Golf hasn’t just been good this year, it’s been great. Record rounds across the state, stale memberships filling up, and new golfers picking up the clubs and trying it out. These are all things we have worked so hard over the years to make happen, and all it took was a pandemic. We never thought of that. We’ve always said, “we just need to get them started in the game, and they will fall in love”, I hope that is true and the game continues to grow. Most of you have experienced what golf is like from the golfer's perspective, but not from the Superintendent's perspective. The normal preparation of a golf course changed a lot. Whether it was a new style of cup, the use of foam inserts, no more ball washers, finding trash on the ground because there weren't any containers, meticulously cleaning equipment after use, or limiting the amount of staff that could be in the maintenance facility at one time. It's been rough for all of them, but they pulled through. I may be biased, but the Golf Course Superintendent is the most resilient person there is. See problem – Fix Problem – Move on! Other than the increase of revenue for most of our golf courses in the state, the next best thing to happen was the strengthening of the Iowa Golf Council. A lot of work happened behind the scenes with the council and the relationship between allied golf associations has never been stronger. I tip my hat to my fellow council members on a job well done this year! It's the holiday season and many of us aren't able to spend time with family. Some of us haven't seen family for months. We all have a story to tell. Time will pass, life will go on, and someday we will look back on this and be amazed at how well we made it. Then, we begin writing a new story and I know the ending will be much better than the first. Stay well, everyone!!!

2020 Bill Strausbaugh Award Michael McNamara, PGA Michael McNamara of Blue Top Ridge has been named the 2020 Bill Strausbaugh Award winner by the Iowa PGA Awards Committee. The Strausbaugh Award emphasizes the nominee’s performance and achievements over the past five years and is awarded to those who demonstrate day-to-day alternative methods of improving the employment conditions for the PGA Professional. McNamara’s first few days working his dream job as an Assistant Professional he said to a guest at check in “Give this to “my” starter. His first, Head Professional Steve Ficovich, made it clear, in a fun way, hey it’s “Our” Starter. He believes that moment has inspired him to lead by example, motivate individuals to be their best, and help others achieve their goals by being a team player. In the recent years McNamara has been given the opportunity to work closely with our GIVE program. The program initiated the National Tee Tournament of 250 disabled veterans for a full week at our facility. He was unaware that veterans would be become so influential in his life. They as a team, Blue Top Ridge hosts multiple large groups and corporate outings, fundraising events and the Iowa Open. We have also added the Iowa Junior Open that is now in its 2nd year. It takes several staff members to be successful preparing and operating these large events. They like to say “We Do Big Good”.
“Mike is a person that does thoughtful deeds without a selfish thought. He doesn’t do great things to be seen or for the glory. His work speaks for itself. He even challenges me to think in the same manner. This is what it means to be a PGA professional. For example, with his efforts with the National Tee Tournament, he has constructed adaptive golf equipment for an injured veteran in his own garage. Mike has also taken an interest in volunteering his time to give instruction and partner with the DAV who have organized the tournament for a number of years.” Jacob Shultz of Blue Top Ridge.

Judd Gibb
Iowan Judd Gibb's completes a Long and Winding Road to his First Major By Bob Denney PGA Historian Emeritus
The marine layer settling among the cypress trees at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco has cooled things this week for what will be a most unusual PGA Championship. Yet it couldn’t be a more appropriate setting for PGA Professional Judd Gibb of Fort Dodge, Iowa, to make his major debut. The 51-year-old PGA Head Professional at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course, who has suffered three near-misses trying to earn a PGA berth over a nearly 25-year career, got the break he needed in the midst of a pandemic. He will tee it up Thursday at 2:26 p.m. PT. Gibb is employing veteran local caddie, Danny Pepsi, who has worked the 2011 U.S. Open and the 2017 Open Championship. It’s his PGA debut, too.Together, Gibb and Pepsi will drink in the major experience. “It has been a strange three weeks,” said Gibb. “It began with worrying about the virus, then worrying if they would even have a (PGA) Championship. Once I got that (COVID-19) test on Sunday, I began thinking this was going to happen.” The first Fort Dodge golfer to compete in one of golf’s four Grand Slam events, Gibb finished 17th in the 2019 PGA Professional Player of the Year standings. With the PGA Professional Championship canceled in June in Austin, Texas, new criteria determined the berths of 20 PGA Club Professionals in the PGA Championship.

Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Fall/Winter Issue
Gibb earned enough points to play in the PGA by capturing his second Iowa PGA Section Championship, finishing T-25 in last year’s PGA Professional Championship and finishing runner-up in the Section Player of the Year race. Gibb is a five-time Section Player of the Year yet struggled over the closing holes of the PGA Professional Championship to miss a PGA berth in 2006, ’15 and last year. The good news came via an announcement on his phone on June 29, as Gibb was in a pro-am at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo. “I said to myself, ‘you better start playing a little more golf.” Gibb said he has enjoyed his practice rounds at TPC Harding Park, and that a spectator-less Championship will be oddly familiar. “With nobody out there,” he said, “it will have more the feel of a club pro championship except when you look around and see guys you see every week on TV.” Gibb, whose given name is Edward, has used his middle name - Judd - since he was in grade school. His mother gave it to him and that he never asked why. “I had an Uncle Ed, and I think the family got tired of us both looking at the same time when our names were called,” said Gibb. “Judd sounds more like a NASCAR driver. It’s easy to remember.” Gibb began playing golf at age 7. Three PGA Professionals -all at Fort Dodge Country Club -- had a role in Gibb’s development, including Bill Hurd—who Gibb called “Fort Dodge’s
Judd Gibb answer to Harvey Penick”— and head professional Craig Graham, who gave Gibb his first job in the bag room. But the anchor of Gibb’s coaching tree was Terry Miller, who led the club’s junior program. Miller issued Gibb his first golf challenge. “Terry told me, ‘If you can hit it past that 75-yard sign, I’ll buy you a bicycle,’ ” said Gibb. “I’ve yet to collect that bicycle and I remind Terry every time I see him. He’s retired and still lives in Fort Dodge. But, I’m not a biker now. I don’t trust the drivers in Fort Dodge that much.”
“It is a really hard golf course for me, but I play within myself the best I can and plot my way around,” said Gibb. “It’s a wonderful golf course. If I was 20 years younger, it might suit my game better.” As humble as Gibb is, and regardless of what happens this week in San Francisco, there’s one event on his calendar next spring where he will once again be in the spotlight. The Iowa Golf Association Hall of Fame will stage a dual class ceremony for the 2020 and 2021 honorees. “It’s very humbling to have my name added to that list of greats in Iowa,” said Gibb, “and to join other ‘Dodgers’ in the Hall - Dave Sergeant, Rick Brown, Joe Brown and the Chapmans (Tom Sr. and Jr.).”
Gibb attended Iowa State University, captaining the Cyclones men’s golf team his senior year. “We had two fairly good years toward the end of my time at Iowa State, and After a topsy turvy year, it’s time for Gibb’s peers to toast they now have got a pretty good program going,” said Gibb. “I did have good memories until I look back and see him. the scores that I shot. When we played good, we went to Burger King and if we played bad, we went to McDonald’s. I don’t know why that was.” Getting prepared for the PGA Championship in a pandemic was a family operation for Gibb. His wife, Mary, moved him to the basement for two weeks. “My wife, daughter, Lauren, and son, Andrew, were out and about, and they practiced social distancing and wearing masks, but they also had to live with work and with their competing in sports,” said Gibb. Lauren, a seventh-grader, competes in volleyball, basketball and softball, while Andrew is a sophomore guard in basketball, having competed last season for Iowa Central Community College. He will attend Briar Cliff College in Sioux City this fall to play the No. 2 guard position. “We thought it would be wise to lessen the risk for everyone,” said Gibb. “Our basement has a nice setup, so it wasn’t that bad.” Prior to the pandemic, Gibb hoped that Andrew could caddie for him in the PGA Professional Championship and the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois, where Gibb had an exemption as the reigning Iowa PGA Section champion. Both events were canceled. Then, the PGA Championship berth opened, but that also spoiled a father-son connection. “As we thought more about it,” said Gibb, “Had Andrew got the virus out here, he would have had to sit in a hotel room for two weeks. It would have ended all the hard work he put in to get ready for school.” Over the past few days at TPC Harding Park, Gibb has relied on Pepsi for local knowledge.

PGA Cup What were your expectations going in? I really had no idea and this was a way bigger event then I ever expected. The way they treated us was like the regular Ryder Cup except less people. It was just such an amazing experience and the level of play. Those guys were such great players. I didn’t give them enough credit going into the event. It was fun at dinner time as they do every other seat with the GB&I Teams. We got to meet them and interact with them. Their spouses were great. The GB&I Captain Clark is one of the classy guys I’ve ever met in my life. You know after we defeated them on that last day. You know it would’ve been a hard thing for me to do to accept but he made the team came over and they partied with us. We cranked up the music and we all started singing We Are the Champions. I was shocked that would’ve been a tough one determination and a higher level of focus and intensity that I for me to swallow for what we did to them on that last day. had not seen in the past. He was always looked forward. Mundi, did you notice his mannerisms change? Sean said he took more time than he ever had in tournaments. He was paired with Rich Berberian and he felt like he didn’t want to hit a bad shot and let Rich down. Rich is a great player and an elite player (Rich won the 2016 PGA Professional Championship). Sean didn’t feel as if he was one as he looked up to so many of the players like Rich and Bob Sowards. Rich was low-key and helped Sean to relax. He was more focused than ever. Sean was one of 6 rookies and the press was saying we were the underdogs. Sean read the bios of the GB & I team and thought we are really the underdogs here. There was a lot of intensity for the players and spouses. He was more nervous than ever based on some text messages Mundi saw between Sean and his PGA Assistant Professional Brian Wernimont. I tried to be a calming influence on Sean. Did you do anything different in your practice routine leading up to the PGA Cup Matches? I practiced more that in years past but I spent more time working on my short game leading up to the event. I also worked on my endurance as I knew I may have to play 36-holes in one-day. There were no golf carts or shuttles at the event. It was over an 8-mile walk around the Fazio Foothills Course in 100-degree heat. I hired a local caddie to help read the greens. I had walking pneumonia leading into the event so I had to back-off my endurance training prior to the event. I felt good all week during the three practice rounds.
Mundi, what were your expectations? I had no real expectations. I mean Sean said, “This should be a really special moment." I must admit they over exceeded my expectations. The level of engagement was very high, they had some neat experiences for both the players and spouses together. That was neat being the spouse to tag along on these fun outings and get to know the other ladies on your team and the opposing teams. It also made it hard when were on the golf course to just go over and chat with them. The ladies are supporting the guys plus just talking to one another. The officer’s spouses laid out the groundwork for us since they’ve been through it many times. Jennifer (Derek Sprague's wife) sang songs on the first tee box. Sean commented, She made up a song for every single player before they teed off and sang it out loud. The first tee give you a great patriotic feeling and a unique experience. They do a lovely job at the PGA of America with the PGA Cup. The National Officer’s and their spouses are very supportive.
How did the pairings come about? I thought that Past PGA President and Captain Derek Sprague did a great job of pairing the players together. That is tough as he really doesn’t know the players as well.

PGA Cup The relationships we made with the players, Captains, PGA Officer's was probably one of the most special things of the whole event. If somebody on the team plays well in a tournament, we text each other in a group text to congratulate them. There might also be some harassing in the text. 30 some texts messages later. Mundi will be like, “Who’s texting you?” Sean said, “It’s the guys.” Derek pops right in there and trash talks us as well. Derek was a great captain. How did you keep yourself composed or focused each day? I was more focused then I've ever been. We have a set schedule with events going on. When it was time to golf, I was all business and I did my stuff. We had a great evening activity with the teams and one night we were on our own. Everything was all team related one way or another. I think it helped us to win. You know me I don’t like to lose so I don’t care who I was playing weather it be Tiger Woods or someone else. I usually try to let my game do the talking. Did you do anything special at night to remain prepared? I still tried to get a lot of rest. I always think that’s key. The routine helped. They had us be at a place at a certain time practicing on the range, putting and chipping. The routine was a big part of the preparation but getting rest was very important. There is a lot of opportunity to have a lot of fun but everybody was very much business oriented as we were there to win. Did you ramp up for the first couple days? We had picture days, half a day was pictures, media day, stuff for the tv so that was the first two days. The third day was just practice. Everybody on the team was a good group of people and all were nice. Mundi, how were the other spouses? Some of the wife’s had spouses that have been on the team before. That was nice since they know what to expect and know a little more than I would. The officer’s spouses were supportive and helpful. Sean commented, the Officer's were fun to hang with and the like to have fun. What the one or two things you guys are looking forward to if you get back to go to England? Competing again in that atmosphere. The GB&I Team will want to get us since we beat them. I think just getting over there with the teammates and building on our relationships. It’s obviously a hard team to make but having made it, I 30

know it’s realistic to make it again. It’s one of my goals to accomplish. What other experiences did you recieve? They had 4 or 5 different shipments with gifts and clothing for both of us. After the event Derek and Seth Waugh (PGA of America CEO) gave us a nice gift. Even the guys last week when I was down in Florida were still talking about the gifts. Mundi- The staff of the PGA of America were amazing. They bent over backwards to get what you needed, and they would bring it out to you. They will support you in every way that they can. Give us your 2 or 3 of your top experienes? Relationships are our number one. Competing at that high level with the top golfers in the US and GB&I Teams. They were phenomenal players. You know it’s obviously helping my confidence knowing I competed with them at that high level with those guys and I could play with them. Let's talk about the 2019 PGA Championship, Winter Series and how this has helped your confidence? For some reason I felt comfortable at the PGA Championship. I gained confidence there and I was never really nervous. I was mostly nervous because my bicep was bugging me. The second day, Friday I was feeling better and playing better. Obviously, I had another day with the rain delay on Friday. The confidence I’ve gotten off the PGA National Championship in California and my runner-up finish helped. I went down this year for the winter series playing more National events.
PGA Cup
It was funny as Mundi reads the PGA Magazine cover to cover. She’s always asking me, “Did you know about the winning series events in December? Why don’t you play?” My answer has always been it’s during deer season! The boys are getting old enough the next two years or as I get closer to 50 I will start playing in the Winter Series more. I’ve never played this much golf in the wintertime. Usually I’m trying to heal or recover a little bit. Knock on wood but my body feels good. I was wanting to stay for the stroke play, but I needed to get back home. I think next year I’m going to try and do three of them and maybe more in the December Series. What was your best shot or putt? All my highlights were putting. I played Matthew Cord in singles and he had beaten everybody. He hadn’t lost all week. I stepped up my game and I was really focused. I hadn’t missed a shot until 14 or 15. I was starting to get fatigued on the last day. Fifteen was the worst shot I hit the whole week. I mean we had so many good matches that every shot counted. We were on hole 15 and the match was tied. I had a good shot from about 220 yards. I wiggled that one in for Eagle. I made a lot of good putts all week. The greens were Bermuda and were very tough to putt. I had a good caddy all week. We were going into 17 in the Singles Match. He knew I was having a hard time breathing and I was up by three. You drove throught the night to get back to Iowa to play in a Section Event. How were you feeling after driving back? By winning it made my drive a lot easier. I drove back with Mark Egly and we just talked about the highlights and the week. Just because I was playing a Section Event right after the PGA Cup it finally sunk in on what we had accomplished on Thursday. It gave me goosebumps. When we were down there for the 2020 PGA Show I put on a piece of clothing that I haven’t worn since playing the PGA Cup. It gave me goosebumps and rehashing what we had accomplished. When we saw the highlights on the golf channel and seeing the highlights again gives you goosebumps because you forget about the little details. It seemed like the whole week went by so fast. They exceeded my expectations to the way they treated us. I felt like a PGA Tour Player.

PGA Cup Mundi, how did you feel after the event? I went right back to work the day that I got back. I was able to celebrate a little bit more right away. A unique event was great to be apart of and to be on the winning team with an historic comeback. One of the coolest things is the picture that was up in Time Square (picture above). The text messages that went back and forth on that were just hilarious. This was a first class event and a neat experience that I hope Sean gets to play in again or other Iowa PGA Member get to experience. It’s amazing and a really neat thing to be able to build relationships in events like this. The formality of the opening and closing ceremonies. It’s a very emotional to see these guys to see USA standing and Suzy (Whaley - Past President PGA of America) talking. The flags going up and the bag pipes it’s just quite the experience. A special experience. What was your favorite hole to play? Hole number 6 was a tough hole. It seemed like that hole always opened up our matches for some reason. Rich and I played that hole really well. A lot of people didn’t like that hole, but we birdied it every time.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program
How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work? Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life.
This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
Charlie Burkart Scholarship The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.

COURSES AND TRAVEL
Are you looking for a course that challenges your routine or would enjoy some golf related travel while exploring the state? Following a seemingly never ending winter, the urge to get out and on the courses is stronger than ever. Iowa ranks third in golf courses per capita. That creates opportunity to golf somewhere new at a whim. Drive, chip and putt your way across the state supporting the golf ecomomy and improving (or at least enjoying) your game.
