2020 Iowa PGA
Professional of the Year Tess Goudy, PGA
The Iowa PGA’s Assistant Executive Director and Junior Golf Director, Tess Goudy has been named the 2019 Iowa PGA Professional of the Year. The Golf Professional of the Year Award is the highest honor paid to an Iowa PGA Golf Professional. The honoree is chosen based on leadership abilities that stand above the rest, contributions made to their facility’s success, and excelling as an overall golf professional at the Iowa PGA Section level. “I am very honored to be selected as the 2019 Iowa PGA Professional of the Year. It is always great to be recognized and honored for your work and accomplishments. I am very appreciative to have such a great team both at work and home,” said Goudy, “My fellow section staff members, PGA Members and Associates and especially my family have always been there to support me and I could not do what I do without them.” Goudy is the first female to win this prestigious award in the Iowa PGA. She has been a PGA Member for almost 19 years. She started her career as an Assistant Professional following college in 1995 at the Kirksville Country Club in Kirksville, Missouri.

In addition to her passion for Junior Golf, Goudy also heads up Membership Development for the Iowa PGA. This includes setting up educational opportunities for the Iowa PGA Membership and monitoring all Continuing Education and Membership updates.
She served in that position for 2 1/2 years before becoming the Assistant Golf Professional at the Geneva Golf & Country Club in Muscatine, Iowa from 1998 to 2000. In February of 2001 she was hired by then Iowa PGA Executive Director Kirk Stanzel, PGA as the Communications Director. She is known throughout the Iowa PGA Section for her success in leading the Junior Golf Division of the Iowa PGA. Iowa PGA Past President and retired Elmwood Country Club’s Head Golf Professional Jerry Johnson wrote in his letter of recommendation, “In summary, Tess Goudy has dedicated her career to growing the game and serving the IPGA and it is time to let her know just how much the Iowa PGA appreciates her!” Goudy has led all things in the Iowa PGA Junior Golf space for 13 years. Under her leadership the Iowa PGA Junior Tour has become one of the models for Junior Tours in the US and will administer 98 Junior Tour, Pee Wee Tour and IHSAA events in 2019. Goudy has other duties that include administration of the Junior Academy and oversight of PGA Jr. League and Drive, Chip and Putt.
“This (Junior Tour/Pee Wee Tour) has all been made possible by the hard work and passion of Tess Goudy, who has been administering this for years, along with her duties as Assistant Executive Director,” said Ken Schall, Past President of the Iowa PGA and from the Ken Schall Golf Performance Studios in his nomination letter, “At various times in Tess’s tenure, there have been gaps in which the section has not had an Executive Director. I have been impressed with her ability to run the section affairs seamlessly in the absence of an ED. Please consider Tess Goudy as the Iowa PGA Professional of the Year.” Goudy continues to play the game of golf with family and friends whenever her busy schedule allows. This includes playing in the inaugural Iowa PGA Women’s Section Championship in 2019. Goudy was instrumental in recruiting and encouraging other Iowa PGA Female members to play in this first-ever event at the Amana Colonies Golf Course. Goudy has proven she is a great leader and her commitment and contributions to the Iowa PGA Section, the game of golf and her family are extraordinary and remarkable. Goudy has also won the 2002 Bill Strausbaugh Award and the 2008/2011 Youth Player Development Award. Our congratulations to Tess Goudy on being honored as the 2019 Iowa PGA Golf Professional of the Year.

2019 Charlie Burkart Scholarship Recipient The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and Head PGA Professional at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students in furthering their education. At least one high school graduate will be the 2019 Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,500 per year for four years. Other previously graduated applicants will be reviewed with additional scholarships awarded when possible. Congratulations to Port Byron, IL native, Anthony Ruthey on being selected as the 2019 Charlie Burkart Scholarship honoree by the Iowa PGA Foundation Charlie Burkart Scholarship committee. Anthony will be attending Southern Illinois-Edwardsville to pursue a degree in Business Marketing as he competes on the University’s Men’s Golf Team. I am grateful for being blessed with this scholarship. It will definitely help immensely with paying for tuition and helping me pursue my dreams. As of now, my major is Business Marketing with a minor in Psychology and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. I am contemplating changing it to Sports Psychology in hopes of helping other athletes get past the mental struggles that we all know are such a huge part of golf. Golf’s impact on me and my character has allowed me to understand and respect the hard work that I need to succeed in the college atmosphere. It has allowed me to meet many people that have pushed me to be as good as I want to be. Golf is deeply rooted in the Ruthey family tree, starting with my Grandfather, Tony Ruthey. He was a very accomplished player and introduced my dad to the game in which he passed on to me. Knowing the legacy that the Ruthey family has in golf is immense pressure itself but it makes me push myself to live up to that legacy but also pave my own path in the game and define myself as an accomplished player. As like most college golfers, I do have aspirations to continue to compete at a high level in my sport. I have complete and total confidence in myself that I can play at the professional level. That being said, I also understand that God might have different plans for my future. I can only control what is right now, so I am working hard to start off on a good note in trying to earn a degree. Like I said earlier, if I am not able to play professionally, I hope to continue to work in the golf business, helping other young athletes however that may be. My biggest influence in golf was my dad (Mark Ruthey, PGA), a long time Iowa Section Pro. My grandfather was a great player and I leaned on him for advice. I was proud to compete in many Iowa Section junior events that helped me groom my tournament skills. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention PGA Members Jon Waddell from Palmer Hills, and Eric Drane at Oakwood C.C. for their support. I’m most thankful for the support from my parents for encouraging me during my junior playing career. Many hours on the road to tournaments provided ample time for conversations about where golf could take me in the future. I was also lucky to have great High School Coaches and teammates who pushed me to be the best I could be. Earning this scholarship is a true blessing. As most of the members of the Iowa Section know, most do not become teaching professionals for the money. It is purely for the love of the game. That being said, this scholarship will help me incredibly to purse my dreams and aspirations. I am truly grateful for all the blessings golf has given me and all the opportunities the Iowa Section has granted in my journey so far. I would like to thank the committee for selecting me for this scholarship and I hope to continue to represent the Iowa Section to the best of my abilities.

2019 Charlie Burkart Scholarship Recipents Bailee Flory of the Iowa PGA Section, Morgan McMillan of the Oneota Golf & Country Club and Chris Stauffer of the Brown Deer Golf Club have been selected as the 2019 Charlie Burkart Scholarship honorees by the Iowa PGA Foundation Charlie Burkart Scholarship Committee. Flory started her golf career at Waverly-Shell Rock High School before attending Wartburg College. At Wartburg she excelled on the golf team including playing at the NCAA Division III National Finals in 2018. After serving an internship with the Iowa PGA Section in the Summer of 2018, she was hired that Fall as the Tournament Assistant. Flory has been promoted to Junior Golf Coordinator in October of 2019. “I am honored to be one of the recipients of this scholarship as it helps me achieve a goal of mine that I have always had.” said Flory, “I am extremely thankful for the Iowa PGA Section for giving me the opportunity to learn and further my career with them. They have pushed me to be the best I can be, and I wouldn’t be here without their support.”
McMillan started her golf career at Waukon High School before moving onto Wartburg College to play on the golf team. Her career at Wartburg was outstanding as she earned All-Iowa Conference honors three times, placed ninth (2011), second (2013) and third (2014) at the Conference Championships. She helped lead the teams to four Conference Championships and four trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. McMillan is currently the Assistant Manager and PGA Associate Golf Professional at the Oneota Golf & Country Club. Her plan is to become a General Manager of a golf facility in the future.
Stauffer is currently a PGA Associate Professional at the Brown Deer Golf Club. He is also coaching the Regina High School’s boy’s golf team. As a young teacher of the game he is always looking for ways to improve his ability to teach and coach. In his first season he coached two individual district qualifiers and one state golf qualifier. Working with high school athletes is a passion of his. They help him grow as a coach, teacher, and professional as well as being able to help coach them to become better students, golfers, and young adults. We look forward to these three recipients making an impact on golf. We are happy to announce Bailee, Morgan and Chris as the 2019 Burkhart Scholarship honorees.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work? Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
