Professional of the Year Monte Meyer

South Hills Golf Course Head PGA Professional, Monte Meyer has been named the 2018 Iowa PGA Professional of the Year. The Golf Professional of the Year Award is the highest honor paid to an Iowa PGA Golf Professional. The honoree is chosen based on leadership abilities that stand above the rest, contributions made to their facility’s success, and excelling as an overall golf professional at the Iowa PGA Section level. “I am completely humbled by receiving this year’s Iowa PGA Professional of the year award,” said Meyer. “I feel this award should be shared equally between my family, staff and the thousands of Cedar Valley golfers I have been fortunate enough to serve these past 28 years.” Meyer has been a PGA Member for 28 years. He started his career as an Assistant Professional in 1989 at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in that position for two years before becoming the Head Golf Professional at South Hills Golf Course in 1991. He is known throughout the Iowa PGA Section for his success in growing the game of golf and keeping people engaged in the game.

New Membership The PGA of America is the world’s largest sports organization, comprised of 27,000 men and women golf professionals who are recognized as experts in growing, teaching, and managing the game of golf, while serving millions of people throughout its 41 PGA Sections nationwide. The Iowa PGA Section gained five new members in 2018. These individuals have completed the PGA Professional Golf Management Program and all other requirements. 2018 Charlie Burkart Scholarship Recipents The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and Head PGA Professional at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students in furthering their education. At least one high school graduate will be the 2019 Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,500 per year for four years. Other previously graduated applicants will be reviewed with additional scholarships awarded when possible. Waukee, Iowa native, Nicolaus Latcham has been selected as a 2018 Charlie Burkart Scholarship honoree by the Iowa PGA Foundation Charlie Burkart Scholarship committee. Latchman’s passion for the game of golf started at a young age when his grandfather took him to the driving range. Latchman instantly fell in love with the game of golf. Throughout his childhood, Latchman’s passion for golf grew as he started playing competitively at the age of 10. He wasa member of the Iowa PGA Junior Tour and played on the Waukee High School golf team for four years, where he was named Player of the Year twice (Freshman and Junior year). He marvels at the game of golf and all it has done for him, including the life lessons that the game has taught him.

Davis Sutton of Ellis Park Golf Course has been selected as a 2018 Charlie Burkart Scholarship honoree by the Iowa PGA Foundation Charlie Burkart Scholarship Committee. In the Spring of 2017 Davis decided he would enroll in the PGA of America’s Professional Golf Management Program. After entering the program Sutton accepted his current job at Ellis Park Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. Sutton has completed his PAT and entry level exam. Sutton is most interested in working on the junior golf side of the industry. He helps with the junior golf program that is run through the City of Cedar Rapids, the Ellis PGA Jr. League team and he also has a handful of junior golfers that he helps on an individual basis. Sutton has seen success playing the game of golf. Sutton turned professional in the spring of 2017. Since then, he has competed in seven Iowa PGA events. He’s finished inside the top-10 in five of the seven events he’s played in, including victories at the National Car Rental Iowa Assistant PGA Championship and the Fall Education & Pro-Pro.
