LETTER FROM THE IOPP BOARD CHAIR

IoPP has adapted well to serve you during the pandemic Wow! What a year. Last year when I penned this letter we had just started lock down and feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you had asked me whether it would have lasted this long, naively I would have said no. I just didn’t see how the world could stop. In fact, the world didn’t really stop; people, products, organizations, and companies big and small, adapted and moved forward. I’m happy to report IoPP is one of those organizations that survived and actually thrived by providing great resources to the packaging community. In my second year as Board Chair, we looked at how IoPP could leverage the assets and offerings we had in our arsenal, as well as what else we could do to add value. Since many people found themselves pausing for a while, they took advantage of our online Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course and obtained their CPP (Certified Packaging Professional) designation. In addition, we offered 11 webinars where attendance was up twofold over 2019. Chapters and National found ways to connect virtually by having meetings and happy hour chat sessions and utilizing the PackChat app. We, of course, participated in PMMI’s PACK EXPO Connects virtual trade show last fall and hope to see many of you in person at the next PACK EXPO this fall in Las Vegas. This past year we launched a member referral program, where any member can earn points to upgrade or redeem for a full year of membership if someone newly joins and mentions them in the “How did you learn about IoPP?” field on the membership application. So, if you aren’t a member of IoPP, I encourage you to join us and be sure to name who referred you. We will continue to look for ways to engage the packaging community, extend our reach and drive the Institute forward. Once again, I am pleased to share the results of the IoPP 2021 Salary Survey.

Respectfully,

Rebecca Lane Oesterle, CPPL Chair, Institute of Packaging Professionals

See who else is on the Board of Directors.

SECTION IV: BENEFIT & COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Total Compensation in 2021 In order to accurately measure industry compensation trends, respondents working in foreign countries were reported separately and not included in the trend results below as changes in currency conversions (e.g. Canadian Dollars, British Pounds, etc.) could not be taken into account. Overall, domestic respondents indicated that wages increased in 2020. Particularly, salaries over $100k increased after dipping slightly in 2019. Earners in the $100-$149k range increased to 34% (up from 31% in 2019), while the $200k or more range increased 2% from last year. This year’s domestic respondents also had a higher percentage of highly experienced (20 years or more) workers, (39% in 2021 vs. 34% in 2020). A wealth of experience generally accompanies a higher salary, which could be another contributor to this year’s increased average salary. Trends - Percent Earning (Domestic Only) 2014

Compensation by Gender Overall, males earn more than females. While it’s important to keep in mind that male respondents typically have more experience (and are older), they also typically earn higher salaries. Women consistently outnumber men in lower salaries ($99k and below), and men consistently outnumber women in all higher salary categories ($100k and above). Although salaries increased at roughly the same rate for both men (+5.8%) and women (+5.1%) in 2020, the gains for women are not enough to create parity among the genders. SECTION IV: BENEFIT & COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Compensation by Education For the most part, a rise in level of education is equal to a rise in salary; average salary for some college or an under-grad degree is less than the average salary for some graduate studies or a graduate degree. The average salary for those with some doctoral work or a PhD is highest overall. However, in 2020 the data show that average salary is lower for individuals with a graduate degree than those who have only completed some graduate studies and also lower for those with a doctorate degree than those with only some doctoral work. LETTER FROM THE IoPP DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

How well do you navigate parcel delivery’s packaging challenges? If any doubts remained about the impact of the online consumer, the COVID-19 pandemic has dispelled them. It is significant and here to stay. The message is clear for those who package products: Evolve with the trends or risk becoming irrelevant. Online consumers in 2021 are nuanced, to be sure. But more broadly, they fall into two general groups. Some are experiential consumers enamored with the “unboxing” experience. These consumers consider the package-opening experience equally important as the product. The many unboxing videos on YouTube provide ample proof. A longtime friend is someone I put in the second category of today’s online consumers. Prior to 2020, he rarely purchased anything online. Retired, shopping at stores gave him another reason to get out of the house. When the pandemic hit, he turned to ordering everything online as a health precaution. He quickly fell in love with the convenience of e-commerce. Despite being fully vaccinated, he tells me he can’t foresee ever returning to in-store shopping. Unlike those in the first group, my friend says he doesn’t give much thought to the unboxing experience. Just give him what he ordered, undamaged and in reasonable time. Two different consumer mindsets, but both craving deliver-it-to-me-now convenience, which has heightened another challenge for packaging—an unprecedented crush of goods—consumer and B2B— ordered online and needing delivery. On time and undamaged. The exploding volume of parcel deliveries is making that task increasingly daunting for delivery companies. I’ve watched parcel drivers literally run from their vehicles to houses—and sometimes toss or drop packages on porches—in their haste to stay on schedule. As parcel delivery continues its incredible trajectory and taxes logistics systems, is your packaging a star at every touchpoint? Do you know all the strengths and weaknesses of the materials you’re considering— for both function and design impact? Do you have the packaging savvy that enables you and your team to make good decisions? IoPP is here to help, whether it’s a course, a webinar or a title in our bookstore. How can we help you succeed?

Best Regards,

Jim George Director of Education Institute of Packaging Professionals
