Disclaimer: a portion of survey responses were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis which may skew the data presented in this report. Note on average salary: In order to make a truly fair average salary comparison yearover-year, the sample’s shares of male and female respondents must be consistent. The adjusted average salary accounts for the increase in female respondents in 2020 (+3%, from 26% to 29%), who have generally lower salaries than male respondents, and the corresponding decrease in male respondents (-3%, from 74% to 71%) who have generally higher salaries. Revised for gender share consistency, the overall average domestic salary dropped 3.2% from 2019, as opposed to the unweighted average drop of 4.1% referenced elsewhere in the report.

LETTER FROM THE IOPP BOARD CHAIR

2020’s Health Challenges Show Packaging’s Critical Importance 2020 will not be a year we soon forget! It has demonstrated the role packaging plays in protecting products and preserving food, among other things. I joined the Institute of Packaging Professionals in 2005 and never thought 15 years later I would be Board Chair of this great organization. I was elected to the board in 2019 and stepped into the role of Treasurer. It was gratifying to see the improvement in financials and the smooth transition of our alliance with PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, last year. This year, I have assumed the role of Chair and am excited we have a very strong, engaged Board of Directors with several new members. We will continue to drive the Institute forward with the help of a great staff and our Executive Director, Jane Chase. Did you happen to see the amazing article in Packaging World last September that highlighted PepsiCo’s use of our Certified Packaging Professional program? Both the learning portion and the certification process were done entirely online. It is just one of many examples of how IoPP continues to bring value to the packaging community. The CPP program is expanding globally, which is a great thing! We, of course, are focusing on membership and have recently revamped our Honors and Awards program, so look for a splash at PACK EXPO in November in Chicago. We also continue to highlight great packages with our AmeriStar Awards (have you entered your new packages yet?) IoPP has a lot to offer our members, and we hope it is apparent. With that said, I am pleased to share the results of the IoPP 2020 Salary Survey; it continues to show that packaging is not only a valuable business segment but a very rewarding career. Respectfully,

Rebecca Lane Oesterle, CPPL Chair, Institute of Packaging Professionals See who else is on the Board of Directors.

SECTION IV: BENEFIT & COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Total Compensation in 2019 In order to accurately measure industry compensation trends, respondents working in foreign countries were reported separately and not included in the trend results below as changes in currency conversions (e.g. Canadian Dollars, British Pounds, etc.) could not be taken into account. Overall, domestic respondents indicated that wages declined in 2019. This may be due to a demographic shift in the base of respondents. This year’s domestic respondents were older (a 47% increase in 65+) with an average salary decrease of 7.4%. The bulk of this general decrease was experienced by the 65+ age group, where the average salary fell 22.7%. The table below compares results for all domestic respondents from 2013-2019. Compensation By Gender Overall, males earn more than females. While it’s important to keep in mind that male respondents typically have more experience (and are older), they also typically earn more in total annual compensation. However, the difference between average earnings for males and females shrank from roughly $17,000 in 2019’s data to only $13,000 in 2020; a possible sign that the gap is narrowing. SECTION IV: BENEFIT & COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Compensation By Education For the most part, a rise in level of education is equal to a rise in salary; average salary for some college or an under-grad degree is less than the average salary for some graduate studies or a graduate degree. The average salary for those with some doctoral work or a PhD is highest overall. However, in 2020 the data show that average salary is lower for individuals with a graduate degree than those who have only completed some graduate studies and also lower for those with a doctorate degree than those with only some doctoral work.

LETTER FROM THE IoPP DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

Are You Prepared to Adapt to the ‘New Normal?” In recent weeks, I’ve talked with IoPP members and read the perspectives of a few strategic thinkers. Some ideas are emerging for where things may be heading in packaging as we slowly work our way back toward a “new normal.” Here are several thoughts on how business will evolve for packaging professionals:

•

•

• Production agility will be paramount, and you need to understand what your customers want now more than ever. Consider snack foods—some manufacturers are seeing a surge in demand for single-use packaging while others, catering to families isolating during the pandemic, are prioritizing biggerpack and multipack formats. Both require different packaging and production line considerations. Many consumers will prioritize product availability over brand loyalty, as they did during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. That will place a premium on packaging running efficiently on production lines, with minimal but well-planned downtime. When was the last time you analyzed the financial impacts of your packaging’s changeover time on your packaging line? Companies will need to assess how their business has changed since the onset of COVID19. An audit and risk assessment, for example, may point to needed changes in suppliers and alternative manufacturing sites. If so, what are the packaging ramifications?

The coming times offer great challenges—but they also put us at the doorstep of an emerging era promising great opportunities for innovation. The winners will be manufacturers that understand the deeper truths about how our healthcare challenges are affecting their consumers’ lives—and how their brands can help. They will have answers for supply chain disruption and packaging materials sourcing issues. It has never been more important than now to know your consumer, and to keenly understand considerations such as your packaging options and what different packaging formats and materials do in production. IoPP’s training programs and our PackChat networking community app can lend a hand on the latter part. How can IoPP help you succeed? Best Regards,

Jim George Director of Education Institute of Packaging Professionals
