LETTER FROM THE IOPP BOARD CHAIR
Our survey says: What a difference a year makes! IoPP is on the move. Welcome to the IoPP 2019 Salary Survey. The results are another example of why it’s good to be in the packaging business. Your Institute turned a corner a few weeks ago, with a fresh direction in sight. When I became IoPP’s chairman at the beginning of 2018, there were concerns that membership wasn’t growing, that our financial position was not at its best and that perhaps leadership had lost touch with the membership. What a difference a year makes! Membership is growing again; our finances are back on track, headed in a good direction; and it appears that your organization, with a reinvigorated Board of Directors, has a better handle on what you want, and need, as packaging professionals. None of this would be possible without our competent staff, who have remained loyal and focused on making IoPP the best organization it can be. They have been and will continue to be focused on what is important to you and to the packaging community. So, a special thanks go to our Executive Director, Jane Chase; the IoPP management team; and your Board of Directors. Thanks to everyone who is doing their part, and more. A perfect example of our new outreach is PackChat. This online community is open to all members and offers a free exchange of experiences and knowledge in a way that has never been done before within the packaging community. If you haven’t used PackChat, login and learn more about it. Are you aware that we have formed a new alliance with PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies? This mutually beneficial arrangement maintains IoPP as an independent organization, focused on serving the membership while at the same time leveraging many valuable resources available to our membership through the singularly dominant industry presence through PMMI. We are looking forward to growing a powerful relationship with PMMI that will benefit our membership, and the packaging industry, with new products and services for a long time to come.

Our education programs continue to grow and are becoming more popular, including in the international arena. And our Fundamentals of Packaging Technology classes are always well-attended. The ranks of Certified Packaging Professionals continues to grow, and the CPP designation means even more for your future. As we continue to expand the certification program internationally—it is becoming a global club. With this success, we are raising the standard worldwide for those of you who have chosen to take the next step in your career development. We can’t guarantee that certification will increase your income, but it should. This summer, you will be hearing details about how one of the largest multinational consumer product companies is leveraging both our educational and certification programs to build a powerful and cohesive team, prepared and flexible for the future. How can we help your company? I could go on, but I’m running out of page. Simply then, the Institute of Packaging Professionals is here to serve you and the packaging community at large. We recognize that packaging is important to business and to society as a whole, as we strive to do our part to encourage a more sustainable environment for future generations. All the best, Thomas L Schneider, CPP, Fellow Chair – Institute of Packaging Professionals Member, Packaging and Processing Hall of Fame See who else is on the Board of Directors.

LETTER FROM THE IoPP DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
Two Key Questions as Packaging Spending Increases Here are two questions to circulate among your packaging team: Is our company among the many who are planning to spend more heavily in packaging over the next 12 months? If so, how prepared are we to maximize our investment? These questions certainly should give pause to packaging managers and team members alike. They struck me as I read the results of a recent L.E.K. Consulting survey of 250 brand owners in all product categories. A whopping 75 percent of them indicated they expect to increase packaging spending between now and the spring of 2020—easily outpacing spending in both 2017 and 2018. Nearly one-third of them plan spending increases of more than 10 percent. Why the increase? Ninety percent of those surveyed say packaging is critical to successful brands and allows them strategic marketing flexibility in adapting to fastchanging consumer demands and preferences. That covers convenience; easy opening; more single-serve package sizes; green growth and placements in new distribution channels, including ecommerce, according to the survey. And, more recently, they add to this list more customization, health-focused and premium products. Interestingly, brand owners also indicated they plan to introduce 15 percent more SKUs in 2020 than they did in 2018. The survey rightfully concludes that “brand owners consider ongoing investment in packaging to be critical to their brand’s success … to make products stand out in a crowded marketplace.” If your company is among those planning to invest more heavily, that brings us back to the second question I asked earlier. How well prepared are you to maximize your investment? It seems like some companies have work to do here, if the hard truths I’m hearing about at IoPP classroom sessions are any indication. We’re seeing more students show up who have been put in positions of authority at their companies, even though they confess to having spotty, or very little, knowledge of packaging. It’s a very scary thing to entrust a “packaging department” of one to an individual who may have expertise in another area, but not packaging, where ill-advised decisions can cost millions of dollars, lost market share or worse.
13
We’re also hearing stories about people being asked to make important decisions regarding packaging materials unfamiliar to them. It’s asking a lot of someone to make the call on polymer-based packaging when their background is folding cartons. Yet it’s happening more than you think. Given companies’ expressed plans for greater packaging spending, I can think of no better time than now to invest in yourself, or in your team, with packaging education. If you’re looking to move up the ladder at your company, having a greater depth and breadth of knowledge simply makes you more indispensable in a tight labor market. And more flexible to tackle a variety of packaging challenges. If you manage a packaging department, you surely know that experienced, well-versed packaging professionals are harder to find. More companies than ever need them at a time when significant numbers of baby boomers are retiring and can’t be replaced fast enough. Everyone’s looking for experienced packaging engineers. Given the tight labor market, can you afford the expensive loss of team members you have? Consider: •
IoPP’s 2019 Salary Survey found that 35% of the more than 1,200 respondents said a job change was definite or a possibility for them this year.
•
Losing a single engineer can cost $100,000 to replace, and it could cost six to nine months of your former engineer’s salary just to identify and onboard their replacement, according to the Society of Human Resource Management.
It is easier, and far more cost-effective, to sharpen the skills of those already on your team with additional education, which can increase their commitment to your company longer-term. Economics ought to motivate you as well. If additional training enables one person on your team to make just one better packaging decision that expedites time-tomarket, or saves your company money, the ROI for your training can be huge. IoPP can provide the training your staff needs. We can do it at our place, online, or customize our courses and teach at your place. How can we help you? Best Regards,
Jim George Director of Education Institute of Packaging Professionals
