JANUARY TO JUNE AT ÍONTAS ARTS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE Hello and welcome to a new season of arts and entertainment at Íontas Theatre and what a lineup we have for you this season! As ever the jewel in the crown of the programme is the annual Castleblayney Drama Festival. Coming off the back of a hugely successful staging of the All Ireland Drama Festival in 2016, the festival committee are back with a bumper selection of 9 productions, sure to both entertain and provoke in equal measure. Theatre goers will be spoilt for choice throughout the season with a fantastic range of productions; including Declan Gorman’s brilliant staging of ‘The Big Fellow’ based on Frank O’Connor’s biography of Michael Collins; Mikel Murfi’s immensely popular ‘The Man in The Woman’s Shoes’ set around the time of Pope John Paul’s visit to Ireland and Des Keogh’s acclaimed ‘The Quiet Land’. Comedians Neil Delamere and Pat Shortt will bring new shows to Íontas Theatre and tickets are already flying out the door for both. Iontas are also delighted to welcome inimitable storyteller and writer Michael Harding for what promises to be a warm and witty evening based on his very popular books (Staring at

Lakes etc.) Another first time visitor to Íontas is Eilish O’Carroll (Winnie from Mrs Browns Boys), who brings her ‘Live, Love, Laugh’ show in May. Having successfully staged a number of cabaret style shows in 2016, Íontas will continue to host these ‘Speakeasy’ style events. Future guests include Declan O’Rourke and Mick Flannery. Country music is very well served with shows from the very best Johnny Cash tribute act ‘Man in Black’, rising star Donna Taggert and our very own ‘Queen of Country’ Philomena Begley. Highlights of the film season for 2017 includes The Queen of Ireland, The Young Offenders and Bridget Jones Baby, along with family films such as Trolls and the Secret Life Of Pets. Add to this a range of local productions including shows by the ever popular Born2Perform, Fusion and Sing For Your Soul choir then you can see why audiences in Monaghan have plenty to cheer about in 2017. SHAKESPEARE FOR THE GAME OF THRONES GENERATION The King of Denmark is dead. His son Hamlet - whose depressions is festered by the death of his father - shatters the narrative and drives it forward. Torn and enabled by his mental malady, the Herculean character embarks on a self-destructive rampage to avenge his father’s death. Incorporating an original score, this gripping, ensemble reimagining embraces the brutality of the subject, and amplify’s the exhilaration and violence of one of the greatest plays ever written! T HE A T R E E V EN T S CO-MOTION MEDIA PRESENT

THE BIG FELLOW

Directed by Declan Gorman & based on Frank O’Connor’s biography of Michael Collins “If there were no wild boys, there would be no great men,” Frank O’Connor’s mother wrote to him in 1922, when he was a prisoner-of-war at Gormanston camp. This original play, based on O’Connor’s writings, captures the life and times of the wildest boy of them all, Michael Collins, as he graduates from masterminding the most dare-devil raids, prison breaks and escapades of the War of Independence to commanding the official army of a newly-formed state. Greatness did indeed follow Collins but so too did division, torment and tragedy. No dull history lesson, “The Big Fellow” is an imaginative and entertaining piece of non-stop, high-energy theatre, from the action-packed opening images to the gripping conclusion. “A combination of physical energy and historical passion ... totally engaging.” Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent Contains strong language and simulated gunfire. Not recommended for children under 13. Date: Thursday 9th February Time: 8pm Tickets: €16 / €14 LOCO & RECKLESS PRODUCTIONS PRESENT

THE MAN IN THE WOMAN’S SHOES

The Man In The Woman’s Shoes - written and performed by Mikel Murfi.

Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again. It is a beautifully observed piece, utterly simple and Murfi’s “astonishing acting” has been widely praised. The show is funny, tender and at times downright daft. You might just fall in love with life again. The show was originally created with Sligo County Council Arts Service and The Hawk’s Well Theatre, as part of the Bealtaine Festival 2012. In 2015 it toured to Manhattan and Philadelphia as well as a sell out, three week run at the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage in Dublin. In 2016 it returned to NYC and has just completed three weeks at the Tricycle Theatre in London Date: Saturday 18th February Time: 8pm Tickets: €14/ €12

THE A T R E E V E N T S AN EVENING WITH MICHAEL HARDING

Michael Harding is one of Ireland’s most distinctive writers and storytellers and his recent memoirs ‘Staring at Lakes’ and ‘Hanging with the Elephant’ have touched a chord with audiences throughout the country. Now he returns to Íontas Theatre with his latest book, ‘Talking to Strangers’ and to ruminate on his life over the past 18 months, playing the Bull McCabe on stage in Dublin, struggling with self-doubt, faith, and psychotherapy, and the chaos of building an extension to his home near Lough Allen. Date: Thursday 23rd March Time: 8pm Tickets: €17 / €15

“The Lonesome West” follows their acclaimed version of ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh, which travelled to The City of Perm in Russia, where it scooped two top awards at this years “2nd International Martin McDonagh Festival”. “In the extraordinary ‘THE LONESOME WEST’, two brothers, one of whom has killed their father, are closeted together in undying hostility like a penned-up Cain and Able” ........The Guardian. McDonagh’s savage ironic humour makes this play a ‘must see’ ... Not to be missed !! The Lonesome West is the third play in Martin McDonagh’s bleak but blackly comic Leenane trilogy. Contains strong language. 16 + Date: Saturday 25th March Time: 8pm Tickets: €15 / €13

THE SUCCESSFUL TD

FOLLOW UP TO THE MATCHMAKER STARRING JON KENNY & MARY MCEVOY JOHN B KEANE’S play “The Letters of A Successful TD” returns to Íontas Theatre following a successful run at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. The Successful TD follows the Trials, Tribulations, misadventures and efforts of TD Mr Tull McAdoo to be re-elected in the October Elections to Dail Eireann. Written by John B Keane in 1967 he displays his edge for humour and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today…. Peppered with Keane’s gallery of madcap characters, this show will have you laughing at politics (in a  good way) from the start. Tull has roped in the help of his faithful daughter Kate while his wife nurses her various ailments in Bed or Lisdoonvarna, but his arch enemy “Flannery” the local school teacher plans to scupper the election for Tull. Date: Friday 7th April Time: 8pm Tickets: €21 / €19

EILISH O’CARROLL

‘LIVE LOVE LAUGH’ TOUR Best known as Winnie McGoogan in her brother Brendan’s successful BBC sitcom, ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’, Eilish comes into her own here with this reflective look on an eventful life that includes a strict Catholic upbringing, two failed marriages and coming out as a lesbian at the age of 50. While poignant and deeply moving it is also packed with humour. A 1950s baby, and the ninth of ten children, she describes her childhood with affection and good humour. Her discovery that she was a lesbian is also tenderly handled with good humour. The end result is a warm, witty triumph that joyously celebrates being true to yourself. Date: Friday 12th May Time: 8pm Tickets: €20 PATRICK TALBOT PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

THE QUIET LAND

WINNER OF PJ O’CONNOR AWARD 2014 Starring Des Keogh and Derry Power Two elderly farmers, Eamon and Nashee, meet at a gate on a remote hillside. They are old rivals, old neighbours. Their conversation is of a gentler time. But there’s nothing gentle about today’s conversation. They are forced to confront each other with some heartbreaking truths. The Quiet Land is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing innocence of an older generation as it struggles to survive in the rural Ireland of today. ‘Two quietly epic performances…..don’t miss it.’ Emer O Kelly, Sunday Independent ‘A glorious, perfectly-pitched pair of performances’ ****The Scotsman Date: Saturday 13th May Time: 8pm Tickets: €14 / €12

They now have over 30 members and have expanded into two classes with new members joining us all the time. The group has an age range from their early 60`s to their early 90`s and it`s great to see them discover a new pastime and a talent they never knew they had. They come together once a week in the “55 Club” club rooms, (Laurel Hill, Castleblayney) where they have a cup of tea, and a natter before getting creative with the paint! Monaghan Motor Club Exhibition

These photographs are part of an exhibition mounted by County Monaghan Motor Club as part of their 60th anniversary celebrations in 2016. It is generally accepted that the Club was first founded in 1956 although many of the founding members are pictured in this exhibition taking part in National and International races and rallies as far back as 1950. This makes the Monaghan Club one of the oldest in Ireland outside the Capital. It was first affiliated to the R.I.A.C. (now Motorsport Ireland) in 1959 and since then has had an unbroken record of organising events which have consistently attracted top competitors. At present Monaghan drivers and navigators are leaders in the field of motorsport throughout Ireland and beyond. We hope you enjoy this journey through the early days of the Club’s existence.
