The heart of the county belongs to the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Driving through the Sally Gap, visitors encounter a raw landscape of open peat hags and deep valleys. High along the military road lies Lough Tay (The Guinness Lake), a dramatic body of water where dark, peaty waters frame a bright white sand beach to resemble a freshly poured pint of stout.
Further south sits the Glendalough Valley, a famous 6th-century monastic sanctuary founded by St. Kevin. Its striking 30-metre Round Tower stands perfectly intact, having weathered centuries of historic raids. From the ancient stone ruins of the cathedral, walkers can trek the Spinc Loop, climbing a steep wooden staircase into the upper ridges to look down over the twin glacial lakes before descending through the abandoned stone huts of the 19th-century Miners’ Village.
County Wicklow, affectionately known as the “Garden of Ireland,” offers a striking blend of rugged wilderness and manicured elegance. Stretching from the dramatic peaks of the DublinWicklow mountains to a jagged coastline, this territory serves as a versatile escape for historians, hikers, and families alike.

Wicklow’s distinct microclimate has fostered some of Europe’s most exceptional horticultural achievements. The grand Powerscourt Estate features 47 acres of Italianate terraces that cascade toward a giant Triton fountain, framed by the distant silhouette of the Great Sugar Loaf Mountain. A short drive away, inside the wider estate parklands, Powerscourt Waterfall drops 121 metres down a vertical cliff face, making it Ireland’s highest waterfall. For a more naturalistic experience, the National Botanic Gardens at Kilmacurragh display mature tree tunnels and rare Himalayan rhododendrons brought to Ireland by 19th-century plant hunters.
Modern design meets nature at Beyond the Trees Avondale in Rathdrum. Here, a 1.3-kilometre elevated wooden boardwalk rises seamlessly into the forest canopy. The experience culminates at a spectacular 38-metre timber viewing tower with panoramic vistas of the Avonmore River valley, topped off with a thrilling spiral tunnel slide back to the ground.
The journey along Wicklow’s marine edge begins in Bray, a lively seaside resort brimming with traditional Victorian promenade charm. Rising over the town is Bray Head, a massive 500-million-year-old quartzite headland that rewards climbers with sweeping, panoramic views across the Dublin Bay coastline. While the classic Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk is undergoing essential long-term engineering repairs due to coastal erosion, the parallel commuter rail line offers a scenic alternative, hugging the cliff edges directly into the chic harbour village of Greystones.
Further south, Wicklow Town transitions into dramatic history. Perched on a jagged, wind-whipped promontory lie the skeletal stone remnants of the 12th-century Black Castle, providing an atmospheric platform for spotting passing marine life. Right below the ruins, the secluded, pebbled cove of Travelahawk Beach functions as a peaceful sanctuary where native grey seal colonies routinely haul themselves onto the rocks. The coastal highlight culminates at Brittas Bay, an multi-award-winning 5-kilometre stretch of powdery white sand and sweeping, 100-hectare dune systems. Its calm, Blue Flag-certified waters are a primary haven for seasonal swimming, horse riding, and regional surf academies
Whether you seek the quiet solitude of an ancient monastic ruin or an architectural journey through the treetops, County Wicklow delivers a timeless Irish experience.

The Abbey is situated on the east bank of the River Slaney on the North side of Baltinglass town. The six beautiful Gothic arches on either side of the nave, supported by alternate round and square pillars, are a noteworthy feature of the ruins.
The Abbey was founded in 1148 by Dermot McMurrogh. Dermot McMurrogh brought Cistercian monks from Mellifont. It was established for the Cistercians which was called “The Valley of Salvation”. In 1228 the records show that there were 36 monks and 50 lay brothers living in the abbey. In the early 16th Century Baltinglass abbey was one the richest abbeys in Ireland until the reformation by Henry VIII which saw the dissolution of the order.
Fragments of the Church and traces of the cloister still stand to this day. The decorative stonework at the abbey shows a very interesting combination of Cistercian and Irish Romanesque architecture.
Church Lane, Baltinglass East, Co Wicklow.
Rathgall was a site of quite exceptional importance in the centuries spanning the birth of Christ. The variety of structural information that the excavation yielded is unprecedented in the Bronze Age and the extraordinary concentration of artifactual evidence from the site has not been matched elsewhere in the country. Rathgall opens a wide range of questions concerning, not merely the nature of the Ireland’s later Bronze Age, but also the role of the hillfort in contemporary cultural developments.

Rathgall (An Ráth Geal) is a National Monument near Shillelagh in South West Wicklow and is in the ownership of the OPW. It is an impressive hilltop settlement enclosed and defended by four concentric ramparts (walls). The outer three ramparts are stone and earthen banks and are thought to be prehistoric in date, while the fourth innermost enclosure is of drystone construction and possibly dates from Medieval times.
Shillelagh, Co Wicklow.
Over the course of the 1914-1918 Great War 1215 men and 9 women then resident in County Wicklow lost their lives directly attributed to wartime activity on the battlefronts of land and sea. They served as soldiers, sailors, munitions workers, nurses or civilians.
In beautiful surroundings on the banks of the river Aughrim at Woodenbridge county Wicklow is the Woodenbridge World War One Memorial Park. The memorial was built to commemorate the 1,192 men from the county who lost their lives in the Great War.
Kilcarra West, Woodenbridge, Co.
The Blessington Lakes, also known as the Poulaphouca Reservoir, comprise a breathtaking 5,000-acre expanse of water nestled in the western foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. Renowned as the largest man-made lake body in Ireland, this dramatic waterscape seamlessly blends industrial history with an outdoor playground. Located less than an hour’s drive south of Dublin, it serves as a premier destination for those seeking tranquility, rich heritage, and outdoor adventure.

The expansive 50-mile shoreline offers an array of recreational activities for every pacing:

The Blessington Greenway:
A beautifully flat, 6.5 km multi-use trail linking The Avon Activity Centre to the stunning 18th-century Palladian estate at Russborough House & Gardens. It winds through peaceful woodlands and native boardwalks.
Scenic Lakeside Drive:
A 26km to 33km driving or cycling circuit navigating the perimeter of the lake. The route passes through charming stonecutters’ villages like Ballyknockan—where local granite built much of historic Dublin.
Wildlife Watching:
The reservoir is designated as a Special Area of Conservation, drawing birdwatchers to observe internationally important populations of overwintering Greylag geese.
Water Sports & Angling:
Highly popular for kayaking, standup paddleboarding, windsurfing, and sailing. The lakes also provide premier angling for wild brown trout and pike.
(Note: Swimming is strictly prohibited due to dangerous, hidden underwater currents and sudden drop-offs).
Parking:
Ample parking is available at the The Avon lakeside resort hub or across the water at the Baltyboys Bridge free car park.
Food & Stay:
Blessington town features traditional pubs like the West Wicklow House for hearty dining, alongside luxury lakeside stays at Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort.

Brittas Bay is one of Wicklow’s most loved coastal places, known for its long sandy beach, dunes and open seaside feel. It is less of a traditional town and more of a beach destination, making it ideal for visitors who want fresh air, sea views and a slower coastal break.
it features a 4-to-5-kilometre stretch of powdery golden sand backed by an extensive, ecologically protected sand dune system. The area is especially popular in summer, but its wide beach and natural setting make it appealing year-round for walks, family time and relaxed days by the water. Brittas Bay works well as part of a coastal itinerary with Wicklow Town, Arklow and nearby rural villages.
There are two separate large, public car parks run by the Wicklow County Council— one for the North beach and one for the South beach.
The main access to the area is via the R750 coastal road.
This castle ruin stands on a rocky promontory over the sea, at the eastern side of the town. Following the arrival of the Norman’s in 1169 Earl Strongbow was granted the lands along the East Coast. He in turn granted those lands to Baron Maurice Fitzgerald on condition that he build castles for protection.

The Black Castle was constantly under attack from local Chieftains, notably those of the O’Byrne and O’Toole clans and in 1301 they succeeded in totally destroying the castle. There is a fine vantage-point for views over the town and the coast of North Wicklow from the ruins.
You can easily walk to the Black Castle from Wicklow Town‘s Main Street.

Located at just below the ruins of the Black Castle in Wicklow Town, Travelahawk is a lovely pebble beach on the Irish Sea. Easily accessible with steps, it is a favourite location for year-round swimmers.
But Travelahawk Beach is of significant heritage importance: it is said to be the first landing of St Patrick and his followers on his return to Ireland in the year 432. Wicklow Head is the closest land to Wales.
When attempting to land at Travelahawk Beach with his followers, St Patrick was stoned by the local people on the order of Nathai. One of his monks was struck in the face with a stone, losing his front teeth, thus earning the name Manntán, Gubby or Gap Toothed. Patrick and his monks left but he sent Manntán back to convert the Celtic people to Christianity. His legacy lives on today in that the Irish name for both the town and county of Wicklow is Cill Mhanntán, the church of Manntán.

For thousands of years people have been drawn to ‘the valley of the two lakes for its spectacular scenery, rich history, archaeology and abundant wildlife. Glendalough is a remarkable place that will still your mind, inspire your heart and fill your soul.
Renowned for it’s magnificent scenery, Glendalough derives its name from the Irish ‘Gleann dá Locha’, or ‘valley of the two lakes’. It is a glacial valley formed during the last ice age. In addition to the natural beauty of the two lakes - upper and lower and the
surrounding mountains, the valley is also home to one of Ireland’s most impressive monastic sites founded by St. Kevin in the 6th Century. All these combine to make this the most visited areas in the Wicklow Mountains National Park
The Glendalough Valley is deep and narrow with the typical U-shape typical of those carved out by glaciers during the last Ice Age. Originally Glendalough was made up of one lake only but Lugduff Brook flowed into the middle of the lake depositing sediments that accumulated over time dividing the
lake into the two we know today. (The lawns and car park at the Upper Lake now sit on top of these deposits!).
The valley is surrounded by high mountains with summits rising over 650 metres (2132 feet) and the Upper Lake, the larger of the two, is 30 metres deep at its deepest point.

Nestled in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains lies apicturesque valley and a lake that oddly resembles our favourite alcoholic beverage – Lough Tay, or the Guinness Lake.
Not only is Lough Tay beautiful to look upon, but it’s steeped in history as well.
The Guinness family are said to have had the lake’s white sand imported to give it that distinctive look. This eyecatching shore was at the entrance of their 6,000 acre estate Luggala –complete with a castle and smaller lodges – which is now available for rent.
Luggala is an ornate, 18th century hunting lodge that resembles a small castle.
Even legends Ronnie Wood and Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones, Hollywood film star Charlotte Rampling, and The Beatles themselves have partied there. And they all got to enjoy this view. Along with Glendalough, the |Guinness Lake is one of the most photographed spots in Wicklow.
Easily one of the most beautiful spots in the country, too. If you’ve never been, plan that trip immediately. You can thank us after.

The dark peaty water of the lake, combined with its oval shape and frothy white sand, makes it appear as if you’re overlooking a large pint of Guinness, surrounded by green, rolling mountains.
From Dublin, take the M50 south, then take the N11 exit toward Roundwood/ Glendalough. From there, it’s under 20 minutes to Luggala Lodge where you can park up. Head for Knocknacloghoge to look down over Lough Dan, or go up Luggala mountain to avail of some incredible views over Lough Tay.

Asyou drive from the gate lodge towards the Waterfall you are surrounded by Beech, Oak, Larch and Pine trees some of which were planted over 200 years ago. In a stunning glaciated valley in County Wicklow, in the sixth century, one of Ireland’s most revered saints founded a monastery. The foundation of St Kevin at Glendalough became one of the most famous religious centres in Europe.
The remains of this ‘Monastic City’, which are dotted across the glen, include a superb round tower, numerous medieval stone churches and some decorated crosses. Of particular note is St Kevin’s Bed, a small man-made cave in the cliff face above the Upper Lake.
It is said that St Kevin lived and prayed there, but it may actually be a prehistoric burial place that far predates him. Learn all about this hallowed place in the fine interpretive centre before exploring the site for yourself.

If you do, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the two lakes and a uniquely spiritual atmosphere.

“Soaring above the canopy at Squirrel’s Scramble, you feel both perfectly wild and perfectly safe, the best of both worlds.”

There is something quietly magical about Wicklow’s woodland in late morning, the light filtered green through the canopy, the smell of bark and damp earth, birdsong threading through the branches above. Now, imagine experiencing all of that from fifteen metres in the air, heart pounding, arms outstretched, flying. That is precisely the kind of exhilaration that awaits at Squirrel’s Scramble, the treetop adventure park nestled within the magnificent grounds of Killruddery Estate in Bray.

“With six progressive levels of difficulty and over twenty zip lines, Squirrel’s Scramble is designed to grow with you. Whether you’re a firsttimer finding your footing on the introductory platforms, or a seasoned thrill-seeker ready to tackle the higher courses where obstacles swing and sway two to fifteen metres above the ground, there is always a new challenge waiting in the branches.
Older children, teenagers and adults will find the courses genuinely demanding, a satisfying test of nerve, balance, and determination. Rope bridges sway underfoot, climbing nets invite you upward, and each zip line arrival brings a burst of pure, unfiltered joy. There is no shortage of proud grins at the finish.
Beyond the individual adventure, Squirrel’s Scramble has become one of Wicklow’s favourite destinations for birthday celebrations, school tours, and corporate team-building. There is something wonderfully levelling about navigating an obstacle course together, hierarchies dissolve, laughter takes over, and teams return to the ground a little closer than when they left it.
Set within the historic demesne of Killruddery, with its walled gardens and sweeping Wicklow landscape as backdrop, this is also simply a beautiful place to spend a day. County Wicklow has long been the Garden of Ireland, Squirrel’s Scramble gives you a glorious new angle from which to admire it.

Wicklow is blessed with some of Ireland’s most scenic landscape and sceneries. From Mountains to Sea, Wicklow offers a variety of marked trails to suit all types of Walkers. Its natural beauty and range of walks for all tastes, abilities and ages make it the perfect “Garden County”.
No matter the time of year, there’s a beautiful, refreshing and invigorating walk to be had in Wicklow. It’s especially suitable for families where a fun adventure awaits you!
With nature in full bloom sitting on the doorstep of Dublin, it is no wonder why Wicklow – only 30 minutes south of the capital attracts such hefty numbers of visitors each year. From nature lovers to adrenaline junkies, from seasoned adventures to Sunday strollers, there are walks and hikes to suit just about everyone.
Dotted with rolling hills, dense woodland, steeped in history and sprinkled with native flora and fauna, Wicklow is an enchanting place to get lost in – be it for a day or week.

Tours go daily from nearby Dublin city and the commuter DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) that gets you from city to scenery in under an hour. But, with endless avenues to explore, the real way to do a day in Wicklow is by car.
The old adage applies that there’s no bad weather, just the wrong clothes. So, before you start scaling the Wicklow hills, don’t forget your boots and coats. Autumn and winter are usually good times to consider investing in warm coats and, for the avid walkers among us, comfortable hiking boots.

ThePromenade starts from the harbour near Martello Terrace, the childhood home of James Joyce, and ends at the base of Bray Head. The Promenade is a mile long walk along the seafront and commands magnificent views of Bray Head. Follow the path up from the Promenade to Bray Head, you’ll find something for everyone along the Promenade! Dine in some of Bray’s top restaurants, pubs and café’s or just get a 99 and enjoy a relaxing walk on Bray’s Promenade!
To start the climb, follow the promenade up towards the hill. The real climb begins at the steps; from here there is a well-worn path straight up to the cross. The path will bring you up through trees and on a dirt path. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble up rocks at the top. The path can get quite mucky when it rains so dress appropriately.
At the top of Bray Head, there is a stone cross which was placed there in 1950 during the Holy Year. From here you get a magnificent panoramic vista of Bray, North East Wicklow and Dublin Bay.

To come down following the same path again, or if you want to extend the walk follow the path to the South. This will bring you on a walk parallel to the Cliff Walk below, and bring you towards Greystones. The path will veer off to the right and follow it to come out at Windgates on the Bray to Greystones Road.
Nestled between Bray Head and Little Sugar Loaf, Belmont Demesne is the perfect destination to get into the great outdoors. This working farm has an amazing network of walking and bike trails, plus a superb café. Belmont Demesne boasts some of the most spectacular scenery Co. Wicklow has to offer, from panoramic views of the east coast to the stunning Wicklow Mountains.

The walking trails weave through beautiful open countryside and stunning woodlands. They form part of the wider national trail network. Try the coastal Bray Head Loop, the Little Sugarloaf Trail, or enjoy the wonderful wildlife and wildflowers on the Belmont Trail.
All the trails are free. There is a small car parking fee which covers the development and maintenance of the trails. Pedestrians and cyclists go free.
Lower Windgates, Templecarrig Lower, Greystones, Co. Wicklow, A63 FX34
Great Sugar Loaf Mountain dominates the skyline as you drive south from Dublin into Wicklow. This unique mountain stands apart from the rest of the upland and is instantly recognisable by its conical shape. The route starts in a car park on Red Lane under a concrete arch.
You can either start the Sugarloaf Loop at either Kilmacanogue GAA pitch or at the car park on Red Lane. Add another kilometer to your walk if you’re starting from Red Lane.
Terrain underfoot: Mountain track, not suitable for pushchairs. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times. Upper section is steep and needs care especially when descending.
The short route takes around 1 Hour or so to reach the top and get back down. Allow more time to soak up the views. The long Sugarloaf hike takes around 2.5 Hours.
The Sugarloaf, Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow.

The Glen of the Downs loop can be located just off the N11 heading south before the Delgany exit (Exit 10). Once you pass the exit for Glenview (Exit 9) be on the lookout for the Glen of the Downs turnoff.
The walk begins and ends from the trail’s main car park, this 3.6km walk is an easy stroll through forest trails that can usually be done in runners but we recommend upgrading to hiking boots if there has been recent rain.
The loop generally takes walkers around 1 hour and covers about 200m of gentle ascent. Beginning at the carpark, this walk is well signposted and easy to follow.
One of the highlights of the walk is Octagon that was built by the La Touche family in 1766. The story goes that highwaymen were hanged at the Octagon during the 18th century.
This Glen was once part of a 300-acre demesne known as Bellevue House. The government took over the part of the estate that is now known as The Glen of the Downs and opened it up to the public after the house fell to ruins in the 1950s.
‘Bellevue’ is the French word for ‘Nice view’, and you’ll understand where it got its name when you see the views of the Great Sugarloaf from the Octagon.
This is a wonderful coastal trail that takes you from Greystones into Wicklow. It’s an easy-going route which is suitable to most abilities, so a wonderful opportunity to get outdoors. This trail is a mix of asphalt, grass, sand, stones, and concrete pillars and is slightly narrow and overgrown in a few spots. Highlights include beautiful coastal views and easy walking on flat terrain. Challenges include narrow paths and monotony over long stretches. It is a beautiful walk while enjoying the sea air.
This is a really pleasant short walk with this old anchor and view over the harbour area of Greystones. Great start for a hike via Bray Head or Greystones promenade and beach. The large antique naval anchor on Greystones seafront is a fascinating piece of maritime history! It serves as a captivating reminder of Greystones’ seafaring heritage and adds a unique touch to the picturesque seaside.
Embark on a leisurely stroll along the marina, admiring the docked fishing boats and yachts. Afterwards, unwind and treat yourself to delectable cuisine and culinary delights at the numerous restaurants, takeaways and cafes available.

Over 500 acres of mature woodland with trees from all over the world are available to explore and enjoy. With many footpaths and a variety of marked walking trails this is a wonderful place for an outing with the family and the dog. The trails are of varying lengths and feature the best the Park has to offer –along the vast expanse of the ‘Great Ride, through majestic stands of Sequoia, Spruce and broadleaves and down along the steep-sided river valley.
If you want to make a break for it, there really is no-where quite like Avondale for an exhilarating, thrilling and memorable experience in the great outdoors.
River Walk The River Walk is the longest and most challenging walk at Avondale with some steep descents and climbs so strong footwear is recommended. However, the effort is rewarded with some magnificent river views and a view of Lovers Lookout from below.
Railway Walk This is a linear walk from Rathdrum railway station through the woods to Avondale House passing under a viaduct on the way. It could have been taken by Parnell on his frequent journeys. Locals often take in a looped walk starting in Rathdrum and following the route of the Railway Walk returning from Avondale House by the footpath along the road back into Rathdrum.
Avondale Forest Park, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. A67 P303
This walk boasts spectacular views of the Irish Sea, and of one of the countries best lighthouses. The Glen Beach Cliff Walk is a moderate hike both in difficulty and length. Out and back it’s roughly 5km and while there’s no really difficult climbs, it does hug the cliff face a lot of the way with exposed cliff edges, so steady footing is needed. It’s best to walk in single file throughout the walk.

Depending on what path you take the walk can range from 3.7km to 5.3km. The official 3.7km follows a green arrowed trail and loops back along the same route. The unofficial route leaves the green trail, explores some lighthouses and follows a country and secondary road back to the car park. The trail encompasses one of the most spectacular stretches of the Wicklow coastline, offering a unique opportunity to experience nature and to explore local history and archaeology.

Nestled at the gateway of the Wicklow Mountains, Blessington is a tranquil spot surrounded by rolling hills, forested trails, and the shimmering waters of Blessington Lakes. This peaceful corner of Ireland is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers and those seeking a scenic escape.
The Blessington Greenway Walk links the historic town of Blessington with the Palladian mansion at Russborough House. The trail starts at Blessington and leads south along the shores of Blessington Lakes and through forest and natural woodland.
The Greenway commences at The Avon Activity Centre at the southern end of the town and weaves its way along the shores, crosses an ancient medieval Ringfort, uses the footpath along part of the N81 before turning back into the forest at Burgage Moyle lane.
It then crosses the Valleymount Road (R758) and makes its way to Russellstown Bay adjacent to Russborough House. Along the way you will have the opportunity to appreciate the magnificent scenery and wildlife in the area.

This easy ramble starts in the Upper car park and brings you along the shoreline of the lake. As you get deeper into the valley the rugged mountains loom high above. Here you can explore the old mining works. Don’t forget to keep an eye for Saint Kevins Bed on the other side of the lake.
This walk skirts one side of the Upper Lake on a sandy road along the floor of the valley, passing through Scots Pine woodland before reaching the ruined miners’ village. Halfway along the trail, the cave known as St. Kevin’s Bed can be seen across the lake and the views of the lake and surrounding mountainsides are impressive.

Roundwood, Co Wicklow.
Ballinastoe Woods has become one of the bestknown woodland locations in Ireland, especially for its atmospheric boardwalk, mossy forest floor and soft filtered light. Located close to Lough Tay, Roundwood Village, the Wicklow Way and the Sally Gap, it is a rewarding stop for beautiful family photographs, walkers and visitors exploring the Wicklow Mountains.

The now-famous Ballinastoe boardwalk is only one part of the wider forest, but it is the section that most visitors come to visit. Tall conifers, fallen needles, green moss and the rising wooden path give the woods a cinematic quality, especially in autumn, mist, light rain or low winter sun.

Main Ballinastoe Car Park: Located along the R759 (Sally Gap Road).

Park at the Wicklow Way lay-by about 250metres uphill from the Glenmalure Lodge by Drumgoff . Once parked, it is better to walk up the tarmac road for about 150metres, watching out for cars (quiet road) and listening out for the waterfalls below and to your left.
Hop over the low wall follow a small path down through the trees. The walk to the falls only takes about 15 minutes, but the tricky ground means you’ll want sturdy shoes. Your reward is a gorgeous set of cascading waterfalls, a perfect spot to escape and enjoy the peace of the valley.

Walks, stunning scenery and a wonderful way to wind down. It’s easy to get lost or confused navigating through the Wicklow Mountains. Unfortunately, signposts are not as plentiful as they could be either. If you’re having trouble finding the trails, The Glenmalure Lodge (Eircode: A67 WF65) is a good starting point. If you’re using Google maps, download the maps so you can access them offline. The signal can be non-existent in many areas. There’s a crossroads just beside the lodge which is signposted. Just follow the sign for Glenmalure, leading you along The Glen Road and you can’t go wrong. You’ll see the Carrawaystick waterfall to your left after about 2 kms. Continue on approximately 1km further for the Miner’s Path. You’ll see the stone-walled Ballinafunshoge carpark on your right which is the starting point.
Seefin passage tomb was built around 5,000 years ago. The passage tomb has a small passage 7m long through the centre. A stone at the entrance has carvings inscribed on its face. Kids love tracing the carvings and exploring the area looking for more. The roof of the tomb is open and you can view it from the top.
The starting point of the Seefin passage tomb hike has 2 small car parks. One of the car parks has enough room for 3-4 cars. The other is the entrance into a wood.
Seefin Passage Tomb hike is pretty straightforward. The walk starts beside the car park. Follow the trail up the side of the forest. The path is very clear to follow and walk along beside the fence for about 500m. The trail then splits and you need to turn left and walk up toward the summit.
It is a perfect little starter hike for small legs. It’s a beautiful hike with great views of the Blessington lakes.

The Wicklow Way offers the hiker a wide choice of places to stay within a reasonable distance of the trail. There is a broad range of options for differing budgets, from basic requirements being met at Hostels, to the more luxurious services offered at Hotels and Inns, as well as a wide range of Bed and Breakfasts and Guest Houses (which serve evening meals as well as providing bed and breakfast).
Because most of the B&Bs and Guest Houses have limited accommodation or may not be open out of season unless advance reservation has been made, it is essential to always pre-book your accommodation. B&B owners are usually able to recommend local pubs which serve good food.
Check the accommodation listings, as some proprietors will collect you from the trail, and offer to transfer your luggage on to your next place of rest. Please refer to individual owners for the rates charged for these services.

Anyone setting out to walk a longdistance trail such as the Wicklow Way is embarking on a serious test of physical endurance. Each stage involves a period of several hours spent outdoors, frequently in isolated and remote locations and from time to time at altitudes above 400 metres. Never undertake a walk-in wilderness country alone. Three is a recommended minimum group size. Wear or carry suitable clothing, food, basic first aid kit, survival bag, waterproof torch (one on an elasticated headband is best) & whistle.
Know how to read a map and use a navigation compass. Always carry both and use the map to maintain a check on your location and rate of progress. Plan your route. Leave a note of your plan and expected arrival time. Report on arrival.
Carry a mobile telephone; only use it to summon Mountain Rescue in a real emergency -incapacitating or serious injury or illness.

Wicklow, known as the “Garden of Ireland”, holds the unique historical distinction of being the very last traditional county to be established (shired) in Ireland in 1606. For centuries before this, its rugged, mountainous interior served as an impenetrable stronghold for native Gaelic clans resisting outside rule.

Early settlers: Wicklow’s landscape features many ancient monuments, such as ring forts, passage tombs and stone circles especially around the West Wicklow area. Such is the concentration that Baltinglass earned the name of “Hillfort capital of Ireland”.
St. Patrick’s Arrival: Saint Patrick is reputed to have first landed on the Wicklow coast in 432 AD, where local resistance initially drove him back to his ships.
Monastic Glendalough: In the 6th century, Saint Kevin founded a monastic settlement in the Valley of the Two Lakes. It thrived for 1000 years becoming a renowned European centre of religion and learning.

1798 Rebellion: Wicklow became a primary battlefield during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Although rebels hid out in the hills long after the main rising collapsed, many were made prisoners at the infamous Wicklow Gaol, to be then transported to Australia.
Viking Influence: Around 795 AD, Norse invaders established coastal settlements. The name “Wicklow” stems from the Old Norse Víkingaló, meaning “Viking meadow”. Wealthy and isolated monastic centres like Glendalough were repeatedly plundered for silver, gold, and captives for the slave trade. Vikings established small maritime outposts and port communities in Wicklow and Arklow, which facilitated trade and shipbuilding.

Norman Invasion: Anglo-Normans seized coastal towns like Arklow and Wicklow in 1169. They built defences like the Black Castle Ruins to secure their foothold.
Gaelic Resistance: Powerful native clans like the O’Byrne’s and O’Toole’s retained complete control of the mountainous interior, routinely launching devastating raids on the English-controlled Pale.

Shiring of 1606: To break the power of the rebellious Gaelic clans, the English administration finally carved out County Wicklow from lands previously belonging to Dublin and Carlow.
1798 Rebellion: Wicklow became a primary battlefield during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, a monument erected in memory of one of the Local Leaders ‘Billy Byrne’ can be seen in Wicklow Town. Rebels hid out in the hills long after the main rising collapsed.
The Military Road: To hunt down these persistent rebels, the British army constructed the Wicklow Military Road between 1800 and 1809, slicing through the wilderness from Rathfarnham to Aghavannagh.
Great Houses: With stability established by the 18th century, wealthy elites constructed grand estates like Powerscourt House and Gardens and Russborough House. Famine & Decline: The Great Famine (1845–1847) devastated local communities, triggering a century-long population decline driven by starvation and mass emigration.
