LETTER FROM
T
he tangible part of my wedding that is always with me, besides my husband, is my wedding ring. I wear it every day and night. My hands sometimes swell, and on one particular night, at about 3 a.m., my hands hurt. I finally got the ring off my swollen finger and went back to sleep. The following morning, I got caught up in my routine, and I didn’t realize my ring was gone until much later. I searched the trash, I swept the floor at least 50 times, I crawled around the house on my hands and knees, flashlight in hand. I asked my husband. He had no clue. The next morning, when my daughter awoke, I took her to the exact spot where I left the ring and asked, “Did you see Mommy’s ring right here?” “Yes,” she said. “Did you take Mommy’s ring?” “Yes,” she said. “Sweetheart, where is Mommy’s ring now?” “It’s in my room,” she said. We trundled up the stairs. I tried to stay calm. But really, I was furious with myself, and I wanted to cry. I went into her room and asked, “It’s in here?” “Yes.” I looked but found nothing. I searched other rooms. She detected that I was sad. “What’s wrong, Mommy?” “Mommy left her ring on the counter downstairs and now I can’t find it.” She offered me her most prized possessions: her teddy bear, her blanket, a cup of milk. I hugged her, knowing my ring could be replaced but still thinking about how special it was when my husband gave me that ring and we vowed our commitment to each other. Our rings are a significant part of that day. But my 2-year-old didn’t understand that.

I wept, and I was so thankful the token of love I was given on my wedding day had been found. The couple met in Oxford in the fall of 2011 and got engaged 22 months later, on July 5, 2013, when Brent popped the question beneath the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo. Oxford was perfect for their wedding vows, as it is nearly halfway between Brentwood, Tenn., Peter’s hometown, and Newton, Miss., Betsy’s hometown. On May 18, 2013, the couple were united in marriage at the Paris-Yates Chapel on the University of Mississippi campus in front of family and friends. The ceremony was officiated by the groom’s uncle, James A. Smith. The bride’s parents, David and Deborah Carr, hosted the buffet dinner and reception, held at the Powerhouse in Oxford. The wedding and reception were planned by One Fine Day Events of Oxford. The flowers at the ceremony and reception were by the Twisted Twig of Oxford, and catering was by the Oxford Catering Company. Given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father, the bride wore a Martina Liana gown of silk taffeta. The bride’s gown was accented with a detachable lace jacket and beautiful jeweled belt. Betsy was attended by her sister, Jessica D. Completing the look was an imported English ivory illusion veil scattered with coordinating lace appliqués and scattered with seed pearls. To complement the gown, the bride carried a hand-tied bouquet of white hydrangeas, Mondial roses and Patience David Austin garden roses. White freesia, sweet peas and stephanotis blooms gave the bouquet a traditional feel. The bouquet was also textured with spray roses, dusty miller and calla lilies. Her chapel-length veil, bordered with AlenÇon lace, was designed by her godmother, Sandra Wages Ashford of the Ashford Collection of Jackson, Miss. Elizabeth Purdon Williams of Oxford, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Elinor Claire Purdon of Oxford, also the bride’s sister, was junior bridesmaid. Wedding guests were seated on white antique church pews provided by Details Specialty Rentals of Oxford. The pews were arranged on the lawn in an arc around the altar, which featured an iron cross under an archway covered in white garden roses, ranunculus, hydrangeas, orchids, freesia and hypericum berries, designed by David Naron of Oxford Floral. The ceremony concluded with each guest lighting a candle to illuminate the bridal party’s recession. The bride’s family hosted a reception immediately following the wedding inside the Mill at Plein Air.
Guests entered the reception area under a banner bearing the couple’s monogram, designed by Debbie Bernet of Destin, Fla., and were greeted by a view of the six-tiered bride’s cake. The design consisted of delicate handcrafted flowers and petals cascading down the side of the cake. The groom’s cake, which was a surprise, was a replica of the groom’s Fender electric guitar. Both cakes were designed by Cory Lewis of Oxford. The wedding coordinator was Krista Bloome of A Bash Events of Oxford. Brandall Atkinson was the photographer. Music was provided by the Ben Shaw Band of Memphis, Tenn. Pretty Presentations of Meridian, Miss., and Taylor Catfish provided the food. Featured food items were shrimp served in an ice sculpture etched with the couple’s monogram, Taylor catfish bites, and a station featuring sushi rolls with wasabi and pickled ginger and pad Thai. All-white flower displays and candles provided focal points throughout the venue and complemented the food display. The couple exited their reception to a fireworks display and guests holding sparklers. After a honeymoon trip to Punta Mita, Mexico, the couple is at home in Oxford. He is employed at Proud Larry’s. She is the director of Southside Gallery.

She carried a clutch of Akito roses completed with her maternal grandmother’s blue crochet-edged linen handkerchief. The floral arrangements were designed by Marvin Jeter. Attending her sister-in-law as matron of honor was Amy Harbison. Bridesmaids were Montana Crane, Laci Bonner, Stephanie Little, Lauren Pickering and junior bridesmaid Allie Harbison. Cecile and Sophie Brister served as flower girls. The groom’s brother, Chanz Crane, was the best man. She is a clinical pharmacist with the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, and he is an Oxford Middle School teacher and soccer coach.

ummer Vander Boegh, originally from Paducah, Ky., and Joe Pegram, an Oxford native, met in Oxford in 2010 through mutual friends. Both attended the University of Mississippi and have chosen to reside in Oxford after their marriage. The couple chose Oxford to tie the knot based on its central location for their friends and the Christmas charm that Oxford offers in December. Joe’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pegram, hosted a chic rehearsal dinner for the wedding party and family members at the Powerhouse. During the cocktail and hors d’oeuvre hour, catered by Party Waitin’ to Happen, the guests enjoyed a video of Summer, Joe and their families and friends. Following the cocktail hour, the party moved into the dining room, where the couple was seated in the groom’s grandparents’ ivory velvet chairs. The couple’s monogram was draped over the chairs on silk

sashes. The seated dinner was followed by an after-party for the wedding party and out-of-town guests, with entertainment by the SoulTones. The wedding day festivities included a brunch at Lenora’s, hosted by friends of the groom. The bride’s family hosted a luncheon for the bridal party at the 5 Twelve Bed and Breakfast. On Dec. 21, 2013, the couple were united in marriage by the Rev. Warren Black at the Oxford-University United Methodist Church in front of family and friends. The bride, wearing an elegant Stephen Yearick custom gown, was escorted and given away by her father, Dr. Brian Wayne Vander Boegh. Her beautiful, form-fitting gown glistened with carefully positioned embellishments and beading that accented the exquisite lace. The bride carried her grandmother’s pearl heart brooch on her
bouquet. The church was decorated with all-white flower arrangements and décor by Oxford Floral. Attending the bride as matron of honor was her sister Kristen Vander Boegh Carter. Her maid of honor was Christina Sophia Psillas. Bridesmaids were Lindsey Pate Gresham, Erin Nicole Mitchell, Cayce Carrington Pegram, Anna Katherine Ransler, Kathleen Anne Robbins, Emily Clayton Shaw, Katrina Michelle Shirley, Reed Pegram Toms and Anne Purdon Turan. The junior groomsman was Carter Thomas Shaw, nephew of the groom. The bride’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Brian Vander Boegh, hosted a reception at the Lyric on the Oxford Square. The flowers and wedding décor were created by Oxford Floral. Details Specialty Rentals created a beautiful wintry and elegant atmosphere. The food, prepared by Elizabeth Heiskell Catering, included an iced seafood bar and a hot-drink station. A scotch and cigar bar was held upstairs. The bride surprised the groom with the band King Kobraz singing Feed Moncrief as well as a cake in the shape of the groom’s favorite powder blue Ole Miss football helmet. Cory Lewis designed it and the bride’s cake, which resembled her wedding dress. Guest enjoyed dancing to DMP Band. The couple exited the reception in a Rolls-Royce, which took them to Paulette’s in Memphis, Tenn. The couple honeymooned in IxtapaZihuatanejo, Mexico, for seven days following Christmas with family. hen Bradley Briscoe got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend of seven-and-a-half years, the bride-to-be only had one thing on her mind. “I just wanted to get married,” Kelli Mize Briscoe said. After years of long-distance dating, Kelli was ready for a speedy engagement. Luckily for the two – who describe themselves as a bona fide country boy and a horse-loving girl – they didn’t have to waste time brainstorming a theme. “I wanted it really rustic since we both grew up on farms,” Kelli said. “I knew I wanted it in a barn, complete with hay and all.” Kelli got right to work scouring Pinterest and planning every detail, and five months later they said, “I do.” The couple exchanged vows at First Presbyterian Church, in the

same sanctuary where the bride’s parents and brother married. The ceremony was emotional, as it was a “first look” for both the bride and groom. When Kelli walked down the aisle in her lace gown, it was the first time she saw Bradley, a member of the United States Marine Corps, in his dress blues. After the service, a privately owned barn in Taylor, Miss., was the perfect site to give the reception a rustic feel. “We wanted everyone to be relaxed and have a good time,” Kelli said. Partygoers ditched their stilettos for cowboy boots and filed to the horse feed trough, which morphed into a makeshift watering hole for the evening. Batesville-based band Class Act played Van Morrison and Jimmy Buffet cover songs under string lights and hanging paper stars. The entire property was transformed into a rustic retreat, and every detail of the reception, from the burlap- and chiffon-draped farm tables to the groom’s favorite homemade miniature chocolate pies and miniature pecan pies, reflected the couple’s personal style and taste. Looking back on the day, Kelli said it was the perfect way to celebrate the couple’s laid-back love. “All my friends were like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is you to a T,’” Kelli said. “We were there to have fun, and we definitely did.”

ana Graham Burroughs started planning her wedding day long before she found her groom. “Every little girl plans their perfect, over-the-top wedding in their heads,” she said. Tana originally wanted a picturesque outdoor wedding at Rowan Oak, but when she learned that the historic home is no longer a wedding venue, her childhood dream faded. She began researching other Oxford reception sites and selected the Lyric. “I knew I wanted something romantic and classic,” she said. “I wanted people to walk in and not know they were in the Lyric.” After she and her husband, Will, tied the knot at the Oxford-University United Methodist Church, guests made their way across the Square to celebrate at the former theater. Inside, the candlelit venue was transformed into the couple’s personal paradise. Tables were adorned with sky-high flower arrangements. An ice sculpture with the couple’s monogram was displayed on a table with marinated crab claws and raw oysters, and delicate silk draping was swathed above the dance floor.

Tana planned a few surprises for Will, which she revealed at the reception. An entire corner of the reception, dubbed “Will’s World” by a halogen sign, served as a trove of some of the groom’s favorite things. The cake, a replica of his boat, was surrounded by some of his culinary favorites: Texas-made Tito’s vodka and Mexican Kitchen’s (a restaurant in Hattiesburg, Miss.) renowned dip. “Girls clearly think things matter more, but seeing it matter to him was important to me,” Tana said. The bride wasn’t the only one with a few surprises up her sleeve. Tana’s mother organized a candy bar for the couple and brought in a Bushwacker drink machine in honor of their Orange Beach digs. Guests enjoyed the frozen drinks in “Bushwacked with the Burroughs” custom cups as they grooved to Atlantabased band Az Izz. Besides the intricate details, Tana’s favorite memory is a quiet moment she shared with Will away from the excitement. “That was a moment I wouldn’t trade for the world,” she said. “It was literally the most perfect night of my life.”

hen shopping for a wedding dress, Anne Purdon Turan took a leap of faith and ordered one online. That leap ended up falling short. “It looked like someone made a Halloween costume with it,” Anne said. “I ended up wearing it to my bachelorette party instead.” Fortunately, the dress mishap was the only snag in the wedding plans, and when she walked down the aisle in September, Anne wore a lace, off-the-shoulder gown at her outdoor ceremony. The details for the day evolved organically, and Anne let the natural elements at Plein Air take center stage. The result was an ethereal ceremony that looked like a scene from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Wooden pews, a flowering archway and an altar were set up amid towering maple trees to bring a church feeling to the outdoors, and candles held by guests illuminated the ceremony after the sun set.

“Robert and I just looked at each other the whole time, and then when we left, all these candles were lit,” Anne said. “It was like a sea of candlelight.” The couple’s reception was held at the Mill at Plein Air, a space with tall ceilings and a grand stairway that served as an ideal backdrop for Anne’s desired aesthetic. “I wanted it to be elegant and sophisticated but still feel warm and inviting,” she said. “We kept it natural.” White, ivory and green floral arrangements accentuated the Mill’s natural wood and exposed brick, and the bride relied on different forms of light to bring a touch of romance to the evening. Strategically placed spotlights created contrasting shadows and lent a dramatic flair to the tiered wedding cake, and an evening fireworks show had all eyes on the sky. After the bouquet was tossed and the cake was cut, the couple was sent off amongst a tunnel of sparklers.

ummer Vander Boegh Pegram always envisioned a springtime wedding, so when she chose to walk down the aisle the weekend before Christmas, the last thing she expected was for Mother Nature to be fickle in the dead of winter. “The sky just fell,” she said. Tornado threats and torrential downpours had Summer huddled under a trash bag to stay dry walking into the church. Still, she never lost sight of what the day – and all its stormy surprises – was all about. “I tried not to get caught up in the details,” she said. “We still laugh about it all.” The rain may have been falling outside, but once family and friends made their way inside the reception, they were welcomed into a winter wonderland. A hot chocolate station beckoned to chilly guests, and a Christmas tree helped get everyone into the festive spirit. Upstairs, guests indulged in merriment at a cigar and scotch station.

“It felt intimate and not some major production,” Summer said. “I wanted that small feel.” Flecks of white and silver accentuated the focal point: a cake modeled after the bride’s dress. The couple, self-professed foodies, made each tier a different flavor. “Joe and I love food so much we couldn’t choose just one flavor,” Summer said. The bride traded her embellished dress for a shorter version and took to the stage midway through the reception to surprise a blindfolded Joe. He was unmasked to the King Kobraz singing Feed Moncrief in front of pompom-wielding guests. Even though the day was all she imagined it would be, Summer is the first to admit that the good-natured saying that rain on a wedding day bodes good luck exists to placate any bride plagued by bad weather. “Whoever came up with that saying definitely just said it to make you feel better,” she said, laughing.

pring showers bring May flowers, and many of those blooms extend long into the summer months. Lelia Kelly, consumer horticulture specialist with North Mississippi Research and Extension Center, said anyone can take advantage of the region’s diverse plant life to create inexpensive floral designs. Kelly also encourages designers to think outside the box this entertaining season.
Start in Your Own Backyard First, consider what you already have. Backyard branches, foliage and grasses can be incorporated to create unique designs. Not a landowner? Kelly suggests asking gardening friends or property owners for permission to “harvest” from their fields. Or try growing container gardens on a patio or balcony.

How Does Your Garden Grow? In the garden, Kelly recommends easyto-grow annuals such as zinnias, sunflowers, marigolds, cosmos and dill, all of which create bright, colorful blooms. Most of the flowering annuals mentioned above require full sun, well-drained soil and periodic weeding for optimal results. ood manners are as Southern as front porches and sweet tea, but weddings take the cake when it comes to etiquette importance. Invitation Oxford asked Katie Naron, co-owner of Oxford Floral and a former fourth grade teacher, for tips on bringing children to weddings and Kara Giles, owner of Nest Paper Studio, for advice on all things stationery-related and more.
Good Behavior The Expert: Katie Naron
Q: How can parents help their children behave during the wedding ceremony? A: Parents need to discuss with their children that wedding ceremonies and receptions are special times and that they need to be on their best behavior when attending a wedding. Parents should be prepared to keep their children occupied during these times, and they should plan accordingly. A bag packed with books, coloring activities and snacks also comes in handy during wedding ceremonies and receptions. Q: What if my invitation does not include my child’s name? A: If the wedding invitation does not include the child’s name, then they are not invited. It is up to the bride and groom to decide exactly whom they want to invite to the wedding ceremony and reception. Q: What should parents do if their children do not like the food options at a dinner reception? A: If children are going to attend a dinner reception and the parents are fearful that they will not like the food options, then the parents should come prepared with food for their child. Q: My child is a ring bearer/flower girl in my friend’s wedding. Does that mean they are automatically welcome at the reception? A: If a child is in the wedding party, then they are welcome at the reception unless the bride or groom states otherwise. Q: Is it appropriate to bring games or books to keep my child busy at the wedding/reception? A: Absolutely! Children should not be left unattended at the wedding or reception. It is the parents’ or caregivers’ responsibility to keep them entertained and happy.

Q: What are the rules for addressing wedding invitations? A: There are lots of special rules that are specific to who is receiving the invitation – for example, a mayor, a governor, an unmarried couple, two doctors or a woman who kept her maiden name. However, in general, address the outer envelope to Mr. and Mrs. First, Middle, Last Name and the inner envelope to Mr. and Mrs. Last Name. It is proper to spell out everything on the outer envelope: words such as street, apartment, and number, as well as state names. If the whole family is invited but does not live under one roof, then the members living elsewhere should receive their own invitations at their addresses. In addition, children who are over 18 but live at home should also receive their own separate invitations.
Q: How soon should the bride and groom send thank-you notes? A: It is far better to thank people for their kindness and generosity as soon as you can, rather than let your notes build up. I advise brides to try to send them within a week or so of receiving the gift, just so that you stay on top of them. However, it is proper to complete your thank-you notes within six months of the wedding. Q: I am invited to several parties and showers before the wedding day. Am I expected to take a gift to every event? A: You are expected to bring a gift to showers, but you are not required to bring gifts to engagement parties. It is better etiquette for the bride to be mindful of her guest lists, so that she does not put her friends in the position of having to buy her multiple gifts. Q: Is social media use – Instagramming pictures, Tweeting at the reception – appropriate during wedding festivities? A: It seems to be very trendy to do so. Many brides and grooms enjoy seeing their festivities through the eyes and experiences of their guests. However, I would caution brides and grooms to leave the social media to their guests, as it would be rude for them to be posting throughout their wedding rather than enjoying the people who came to celebrate with them on their special day. Q: I wasn’t able to attend a friend’s wedding. How long do I have to send the newlyweds a gift? A: I would try to send something as soon as you know you will not attend, but I would make sure to do so within six months of their wedding. Q: Is it acceptable for the bride and groom to request cash gifts? A: Absolutely not! Frankly, it is rude to request any gift at all.
Q: In the age-old question of wedding attire, can guests wear a variation of white or cream at a wedding? What about black? A: Black is fine, but I would still steer clear of white or ivory, out of respect for the bride, unless it is the background color for a print. A Sweet Surprise Jane Mansel has never been one to follow tradition, and her wedding day was no exception. The bride wore a 1950s-inspired custom cocktail dress in lieu of a traditional, floor-length gown, and she encouraged the groomsmen to wear their best tacky Christmas sweaters. “Who wouldn’t want to wear your great-grandma’s Christmas vest from 1991?” she said. So when the Oxford native decided to hold her nuptials on the same weekend that her grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, she knew she had to come up with something special to honor them. “I’m hyper-sentimental, and I get that from my grandparents,” she said. The reception, held at City Grocery, which was festooned with homemade ornaments and strings of colorful Christmas lights, was just the place for the bride to pull off a meaningful gesture. With the help of her sister, Ferriday McClatchy, a wedding planner, Jane asked Cory Lewis to create a cake to mark the occasion. “To be able to share our anniversary weekend with my grandparents made the day extra special,” she said. The cake paid tribute to the couple, who first met at a Fourth of July party in Panama City, Fla. “It’s something that I knew would mean a lot to them, and it meant a lot to me,” she said. The almond-flavored cake, which had an apricot center and amaretto buttercream icing, was topped with a sugared rendition of a photo taken at the moment the bride’s grandparents cut their own wedding cake. The groom’s cake (chocolate flavored with chocolate ganache and milk chocolate buttercream) and the bride’s cake (alternating layers of peppermint with white chocolate buttercream frosting and vanilla cake with raspberry filling and pistachio buttercream frosting) flanked the anniversary cake. When the newlyweds and the bride’s grandparents together took the floor to cut their respective cakes, Jane paused for moment. “Wow, 60 years makes you stop and think,” she said. “One day, that’s going to be me and Adam.”

Something Borrowed Allie Johnson and Taylor Sams first met on stage as Mary and Joseph in their kindergarten class Christmas play, but a move the following year separated them. They reconnected as freshmen at the University of Mississippi, and this summer marks their one-year wedding anniversary. When the couple got engaged during their senior year at Ole Miss, they knew immediately that they wanted to center the biggest day of their lives around the love and support of their families. “I am a very sentimental person, and any chance to share a memory with my family meant so much to me,” Allie said. “If there was any way to include family artifacts or traditions, I wanted to do that.” While some brides visit many wedding boutiques in hopes of saying yes to the dress, Allie already knew she wanted to wear the wedding dress her mother had worn. But the bride didn’t always see the potential in the dress. “As little girls, my older sister and I would always look at our parents’ pictures and laugh at the ’80s style of my mom’s dress,” she said. That changed in high school when Allie slipped on the gown. One glance in the mirror was all it took, and she made up her mind at

that moment that she would wear it on her wedding day. “Both my mom and her sister wore it, so I loved the idea of carrying on a tradition that may one day be continued by my own daughter,” she said. Although the dress was sentimental, Allie knew she wanted to alter it some to reflect her personal style. More practically, her upcoming nuptials were planned for the Mississippi summer, and sweltering temperatures meant the long sleeves and high neck wouldn’t be comfortable. “I laughed when I tried it on because it literally was difficult to breathe with that turtleneck,” she said. With the few snips at the hands of a seamstress, the long sleeves were converted into cap sleeves and the turtleneck became a V-neck. And with the addition of a chiffon bow and a few inches added to the bottom, the bride turned a cherished heirloom into the dress of her dreams. Her father’s reaction upon first seeing his daughter was the icing on the cake. “When he saw me in the dress, I could feel how proud he was of me,” Allie said. “That is something a little girl always desires from her dad.” June/July 2014 | INVITATION OXFORD

Most brides know that good luck is often associated with carrying something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue on their wedding day. Jenna Joe Rose Cooper, who works at Van Atkins Jewelers in New Albany, Miss., and is knowledgeable about all things antique, had always appreciated the old saying. But many people, including Jenna, aren’t aware that the English wedding rhyme is often truncated, and the last part, “a silver sixpence in her shoe,” is usually forgotten. One of Jenna’s regular customers, Hubert Lynn Foley, is an avid coin collector, and he told her the last part of the rhyme when he learned of her engagement. He also surprised her with a sixpence to carry on her wedding day. It was not just any sixpence. It was one minted in 1955, the year her father was born. “It was a total surprise,” she said. “That’s a special thing about a wedding. The sweet gestures that people do that you don’t expect.” On her wedding day, Jenna walked down the aisle on her father’s arm with the metal engraved coin tucked under her foot.

E
ven though beets are a superfood known to help lower blood pressure and prevent cancer, they aren’t usually on the list of anyone’s favorites. Daniel Wicker, whose family owns Sunlight Springs Farm in Water Valley, Miss., admits that the bright root vegetable was an acquired taste. “As a child I was not fond of beets,” he said, adding that he thought they tasted like dirt. “Ours here don’t have that sort of flavor. They grow sweeter rather than earthy.” That taste is due in part to the way in which they are grown at Sunlight Springs. Wicker said that organic farming methods enrich the soil and provide an adequate and continuous flow of nutrients, rather

than a temporary supply of chemical fertilizer. “The organic methods have simply yielded better results on the types of soils that we farm, and of course they seem to be healthier, too,” Wicker said. These days, Wicker’s mother, Leslie, serves beets to her family several times a week with simple recipes that allow their flavors to shine. “Most of the time we just eat them from a pot, slightly prepped,” Wicker said. Leslie Wicker’s Beets and Greens Beets with leaves Butter Salt to taste Clean beets and cook in boiling water until tender. Let cool and remove skins. Slice, if desired, and season with salt and butter. Wash and cut stems and large veins from leaves. Place in pan, and steam or sauté for 8-15 minutes or until tender. Season with salt. Butter to taste.
Harvard Beets 1 Tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 cup sugar Salt to taste (optional) 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 to 3 cups sliced cooked beets 2 whole cloves (optional) 2 Tablespoons butter Mix cornstarch, sugar and salt in saucepan. Combine vinegar and water, and stir into cornstarch mixture. Cook over low heat, and stir until smooth and slightly thickened. Add beets and 2 cloves, if desired, and let set in a warm place for 30 minutes. Remove cloves, add butter, and heat to serving temperature.

I AM OXFORD Lake Elliott Lake Elliott, 101, is a third-generation resident of Lafayette County. Her husband, Dick Elliott, was mayor of Oxford from 1953 to 57 and from 1961 to 1973. For 45 years, she worked at and later owned Tomlinson Jewelers (later renamed Elliott Jewelers) on the Square, where she witnessed the first step of many marriage proposals.
Q: Describe what it was like seeing generations of nervous boyfriends come to Tomlinson Jewelers to buy engagement rings. A: I loved helping gentlemen find something special for their lady friends. I did see many young men agonize over the decision of which engagement ring to purchase. I think the most nervous young man was my son-in-law, Gary [Carter]. He was sweaty and visibly shaken at the step he was about to make. We were thrilled to see our daughter, Carolyn, marry Gary, so I tried to give him the best deal I had ever made.
Q: How did you meet your husband? A: I met Dick in Tomlinson. He came in to buy a baby gift for his new niece, Linda. We visited while I showed him baby cups, rattlers and spoons. It seemed to take him a long time to make up his mind. But I didn’t mind.
Q: What was it like being married to the mayor? A: Being the first lady of Oxford was the biggest honor I can imagine. I enjoyed attending official functions with Dick and often standing in for him when he was unable to make an important event. I entertained many dignitaries from other areas of the U.S. and outside the country. I felt like an official representative of Oxford, the town that I love so much.
life. Your retail neighbors were like family that you visited with, had morning coffee with and many times got together for bridge. Saturday on the Square was the most fun. Mr. Tomlinson would open one of the windows upstairs in the store and turn on his Victrola. You could hear the music all over as people shopped at the trucks parked in the middle of the Square for the farmers market. It’s changed, and those days are gone now.
Q: What is your favorite place in Oxford,

life. I also worked while I was in school and spent my free time trying to keep up with my lessons. Ole Miss is like a city now; it wasn’t so large back then.
Q: How is Oxford different than when you were growing up?
A: Oxford was a lot smaller, too. Everybody
