Suffering from pain in his lower back and feet due to diabetic neuropathy for more than two years, 78-year-old Herb Lair tried traditional options including major back surgery to help relieve the pain. Just when he was about to stop fighting, research from UAMS neurosurgeon Dr. Erika Petersen led to FDA approval in July 2021 of a new option – high-frequency spinal cord stimulation. Under the care of UAMS interventional pain physician and anesthesiologist Dr. Jarna Shah, a small device was implanted into his lower spine during an outpatient procedure in June 2022. He’s now able to use a remote control device to manage his pain, enabling him to return to his boxing therapy and his consulting business.

This treatment has been a gamechanger for me. I would encourage anyone suffering from diabetic neuropathy to ask if you are eligible for this treatment. I am grateful to UAMS for conducting the research to make this possible, and for ending the pain I suffered for so long. – Herb Lair, Harrison
