From there, we shift to the rebellious energy of Atlantic Records, a label that didn’t just follow trends - it created them, bringing to life the voices of legends across genres and generations.

In our Art & Design section, we meet Roberta Verteramo, whose tactile, sculptural works challenge the line between art and craftsmanship. THE PRINTEMPS DES ARTS DE MONTE-CARLO 2025

by Luca Marotta The Printemps des Arts festival in Monaco unfurls as a remarkable cultural event, spanning nearly two months in its 55th edition. Founded in 1970 at the instigation of Princess Grace of Monaco and presided over by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover since 1984, this festival has evolved into one of the Mediterranean's most distinctive celebrations of music and art.

Now in its fifth year under the artistic direction of Bruno Mantovani, the festival continues to embody an open and curious spirit. As Mantovani himself says, with his characteristic infectious smile that perfectly represents the festival's welcoming approach, "When I conceive the programme of the festival, I do so as a composer." For him, "the Printemps des Arts is a work" in itself.

A Season of Musical Renewal Just as spring gives the festival its name and represents a time of rebirth, openness, and renewed energy, the Printemps des Arts designed by Bruno Mantovani offers a journey of continuous discovery and rediscovery. It presents lesserknown compositions by great names of classical music alongside works by composers largely unknown to mainstream audiences. This musical landscape is further enriched by jazz influences, cinematic connections, and opportunities such as masterclasses and backstage visits.

Beyond the concerts themselves, the festival offers complementary activities to enhance understanding and appreciation.

There are backstage visits, commented rehearsals, and film screenings. Before each concert, discussions and talks with musicologists such as Jean-François Boukobza, Tristan Labouret, and Pierre Rigaudière provide context and insights.

The audience itself reflects this diversity-vast, multicoloured, and varied, from very young children to centenarians. When it comes to culture, the Principality demonstrates its commitment to investing in young people by making all Printemps des Arts concerts free for those under 25.

The venues are equally diverse. Beyond the expected theatres and auditoriums, concerts and meetings take place in art galleries, the cathedral, and even cinemas-each space creating a unique atmosphere for experiencing music.

The 2025 Edition: A Special Celebration This year's festival is particularly significant as it commemorates the centenary of Pierre Boulez's birth. Born on March 26, 1925, at the beginning of spring, Boulez was a pioneering figure in 20th-century music. As Mantovani explains, "Celebrating his centenary in a festival he visited and which has presented his music on several occasions naturally came to me."

Rather than focusing solely on Boulez's compositions, Mantovani has chosen to create a portrait "on the margins of the obvious," approaching this singular personality through the prism of his tastes, influences, his repertoire as a conductor, and his relationships with artists he admired-and even those he disliked.

A Musical Landscape of Extraordinary Diversity The 2025 festival offers a breathtaking array of performances: 80 works, by 46 composers, performed by more than 400 artists across 17 venues. This rich tapestry includes orchestral masterpieces, chamber works, jazz performances, and contemporary compositions.

The festival opens with a prelude concert conducted by Philippe Jordan, featuring music by Wagner and Mahler. This is followed by a musical promenade through the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation, where violinist Aya Kono performs works by Boulez and Luciano Berio amidst Bacon's powerful canvases-illustrating how different artistic expressions can enhance one another.

One of the most anticipated performances features the Neue Vocalsolisten, a renowned vocal ensemble from Stuttgart specialising in contemporary music. They will perform Karlheinz Stockhausen's monumental "Stimmung" from 1968, a work of murmurs, contemplative harmonies, and deep rituals that will open this edition of the festival.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra, which Boulez directed from 1971 to 1975, will present two exceptional concerts devoted to early 20th-century modernism, featuring pianist François-Frédéric Guy. These programmes showcase works by composers who influenced Boulez, including Béla Bartók, Claude Debussy, Arnold Schoenberg, and Igor Stravinsky.

Nurturing New Talent and Exploring Connections The festival places significant emphasis on supporting emerging musicians. The traditional concert of conservatories opens the stage to young performers from the Rainier III Academy of Monaco and regional conservatories. Masterclasses with distinguished artists such as Vincent Le Texier, Jean-François Heisser, and Éric Lebrun provide valuable learning opportunities.

The festival also explores unexpected connections. Despite Boulez's occasional criticism of jazz as "predictable," pianist Hervé Sellin will revisit, recompose, and recolour the music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel with his inimitable jazz sensibility. Similarly, the Ensemble Linea will perform works by André Jolivet, whom Boulez initially dismissed but later came to respect, and Raphaël Cendo, a contemporary composer known for his interest in electronic music who has published acerbic tributes against Boulez.

A Festival of Many Dimensions The Printemps des Arts transcends traditional boundaries between artistic disciplines. This year, Francis Bacon's works provide the visual identity for the festival's posters and programmes, reflecting Boulez's admiration for the British painter.

As Mantovani notes, "Beyond the visual arts, Pierre Boulez showed immense sensitivity to great poetic texts," which will be explored through performances of works by Debussy and Ravel, as well as readings of poetry by René Char, Stéphane Mallarmé, and others.

The festival also delves into Boulez's lesser-known interests, such as his passion for 16th and 17th-century repertoire.

"When I conceive the programme of the festival, I do so as a composer."

Works by Dowland and Monteverdi will be performed by organist Éric Lebrun and during a concert by Les Musiciens du Prince and Il Canto di Orfeo.

The Ballets de Monte-Carlo will present a programme centred around a new piece inspired by Arnold Schoenberg's "Transfigured Night," choreographed by Marco Goecke-highlighting Boulez's support for ballet music, especially when composed by his favourite composers.

Mantovani's Vision: Freedom and Experimentation Bruno Mantovani brings to the festival his perspective as a composer, conductor, pedagogue, musicologist, radio producer, and institution director. Under his guidance, the Printemps des Arts has become a true playground for experimentation.

"In Monaco, we talk more about the substance than the context. We talk about the works," Mantovani explains. "It's touching to see that they are still essential. A form of elevation through rigour, artistic and intellectual elitism is encouraged."

He enjoys "total freedom of programming and even encouragement to be bold" at Monaco. "No constraint of profitability is opposed to me," he continues. "The Printemps des Arts does not offer anything that has been given elsewhere. Our programmes are designed by the musicians and myself."

This artistic freedom, actively encouraged by the Princess of Hanover, allows Mantovani to create a festival that offers fresh perspectives and unexpected combinations. Like spring itself, which brings renewal to the natural world, the Printemps des Arts brings renewal to the cultural landscape of Monaco.

As the 2025 edition unfolds from the prelude on March 2nd to the final concert on April 6th (with a postlude by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo in late April), it invites audiences to experience the transformative power of music in all its diversity - a celebration of creativity, innovation, and artistic excellence in the heart of Monaco.

Atlantic's story begins with Ertegun's simple desire: "When I first started Atlantic Records, I intended to make good blues and jazz music, as well as some pop music. My main interest was in jazz and blues." From these modest beginnings - initially funded with £10,000 from Ertegun's dentist - Atlantic grew into one of the most consistently successful companies in music history.

The early days were precarious. Jerry Wexler, who joined as a general partner in 1953, recalled, "We used to have to sell 60,000 singles a month to meet expenses."

Their first office was in the now-defunct Jefferson hotel, with subsequent moves to cramped quarters where resourcefulness trumped resources. At one point, Ertegun and Wexler shared an office with a grand piano - by night they'd stack one desk atop another to clear space for recording sessions.

Atlantic's signature sound emerged almost by accident.

Unable to find authentic Delta bluesmen in New York, they worked with local musicians from jazz and swing backgrounds. "When we had these musicians try to play in an authentic blues fashion, it didn't result in what we expected," Ertegun explained. "But it created something intriguing - music with a blues feel but with a particularly Northern, urban influence." This distinctive style appealed to both Black and white audiences, becoming some of the earliest crossover music - or as Ertegun put it, "In fact, the music we were making was rock and roll."

From these beginnings, Atlantic evolved into a powerhouse spanning genres and decades.

The gorgeous Taschen volume now preserves this remarkable legacy in all its beauty and detail - an essential collection for music lovers everywhere.

A JOURNEY OF INSPIRATION

For every issue, Chiara Condi, international art and design curator, will select four distinguished artists and designers for every issue. We invite you to delve deep into the work and creations of these artists to uncover their inspiration and technique. By uncovering their work we hope to bring you more closely to the artists, we invite you to travel with us to their studios. We hope that their creations will inspire you as much as they have inspired us.

For this edition I selected two artists and two designers whose work and approach are deeply remarkable.

Purdey Fitzherbert’s abstract works demonstrate the power that materials and process-based art has in touching our souls.

We can spend hours standing meditatively before her pieces, dreaming and pondering the layers of meaning behind the beautifully colored layers of weathered and torn paper that cover her canvases. Hers are works of beautiful destruction in which the transient, ephemeral, moments of the universe come to life.

Megan Marrin magically transports into minutely accurate renderings of French designer Jean Michel Franks’ long-gone interiors.

As we dig behind their seductively beautiful design and into their depth we begin to unravel Frank’s psychology as well as our own.

The realism and precision of Megan’s brushstroke fully immerses us into Frank’s rooms and thereby his reality. Her mastery n capturing the slightest detail of the rooms is mesmerizing. The works are so beautiful that their aesthetic power almost distracts us from the profound reality they reveal.

Roberta Verterano’s designs powerfully integrate African influences into an Italian design aesthetic to create combinations of shapes and materials that are unique to her practice. Roberta’s works reflect a deep search for identity and technical perfection that give life to her bronzes. The unconventional table, the masterpiece of her collection, is the epitome of beautiful functionality; it can serve as a coffee table, a chair, and a shelf. The true beauty of Roberta’s work lies in her passion and devotion to bronze, as well as her ongoing quest to creatively combine it with other unusual materials.

Pierre Yves Guenec’s marbles strike the perfect equilibrium between design and functionality. Pierre Yves begins with a stone around which he designs everything to the utmost perfection. Behind his apparently effortless shapes there are years of effort.

Everything in his universe is rounded and beautiful, representing natural materials and forms at their best. When one returns to the essential everything matters- materials, forms, and shapes must all be flawless. Less is more only if it is perfect, and Pierre Yves achieves that perfection in every single one of his pieces.

Purdey Fitzherbert masterfully covers her canvases with rolls of Japanese paper to create visually stunning works of art. As she rolls the paper onto the canvas, she adds layers of crushed snow and ice, filling them with pigment and ink. By moving heat over the paper, patterns appear and permanently catch onto the surface. Her environment becomes part of this process as the paper naturally absorbs dampness, wind, debris, salt, sea, and other natural elements. She then adds natural pigments and dyes, made from ground and filtered bark, plants, and beetle shells, including ground ash, coal, brick, soil and assorted debris. Purdey covers the canvas with these pigments, creating debris in the ink, which forms subtle patterns as it flows across the surface. Rust and salt erode the surface of the paper to transform this beautiful, soft, paper into something un-paper like. Anything from a mark, print, bleach of sunlight can be and become part of this process. It is partly a mystery how things unravel onto the canvas during this process of creation.

The artist's first series explored the idea of perception and the act of awareness—seeing something that cannot be grasped and held onto, but rather only experienced. Pigment and ground metallic powders are trapped between layers of tiny circles. The patterns symbolize transient moments in nature, such as the instant sunlight hits flowers at dawn. Light and colours momentarily appear before they eventually disappear. The artist’s meditative walks, a ritual used to soothe her insomnia, inspired her to capture the ephemeral moments in nature that we can only observe when we slow down. Through photographs and fine pigments she captures these tiny instants and translates them onto her canvases. As one moves around the canvas, colors appear and disappear, conveying an overall sense of impermanence. The circles are self-healing mandalas, as we contemplate the subtle, euphoric, and beautiful moments that pass, and that we can only grasp if we are fully aware.

Purdey’s canvases connect us to the surrounding energies of the universe. We feel a humbling fragility in her paper, which can be ripped, saturated and turn brittle. Through it we behold the beauty of that transient, ephemeral, moment when things are about to turn. We witness the instant something strong becomes weak, just before it breaks or transforms. It is also the moment that something beautiful turns into something ugly. We know that once this moment passes, it will disappear forever. But it leaves room for the new and rebirth, just like in her process inks, dyes, and materials are transformed into something else and new forms are revealed.

Purdey’s works all have an aura of magical mysticism, leaving us in wonder before her enigmatic process of creation. We behold with intrigue the materiality of the canvas, never fully comprehending how things came onto its surface. Images arise from the paper that we cannot fully decipher. As we grapple with their creation, we step outside ourselves. This mysterious alchemy of materials draws onto the canvas infinite possibilities for interpretation. And as we seek to better understand them, we are overcome by a poetic feeling of immense joy, sadness or nostalgia. Their abstraction leaves us the room to feel, to react to the colors, marks, and surfaces. We are forced to imagine there, where no story is imposed.

MEGAN MARRIN

(lives in New York)

Megan Marrin has spent decades exploring the absence of bodies, an underlying theme that she masterfully incorporates in her latest paintings of Jean Michel Frank interiors. Throughout her career as an artist, Megan developed her practice through well developed series that have built upon each other, exploring the implications of the presence and absence of the human body. Although the body is never present, it is always somehow implied.

In her latest series, the artist further delves into this practice by exploring French interior designer Jean Michel Frank (1895-1941) through his interiors. Frank’s influence is so ubiquitous that some of his designs continue to exist without his credited authorship. Megan explores Frank as someone who made a major contribution to the world of design. All the interiors are void of him, just like they are void of the people who inhabit them, yet the presence of the artist and the inhabitants is heavily felt throughout her paintings. The work explores Frank through his psychological states and life experiences that guided him aesthetically. It offers a glimpse into Frank’s mysterious character, as a Jewish artist during the wars, as Anne Frank’s cousin, as an artist whose family was deeply affected by war. Frank somehow transformed and broke from his past to become an untrained amateur who challenged interior design, inspired by and inspiring the Paris of his time, including through his collaborations with musicians and artists such as Giacometti and houses such as Guerlain. This genius side cohabited the shadow side of a man who became wrapped up in this fast paced environment and past trauma, subject to the stress, fear, and neurosis that made him a frequent visitor to sanitariums.

There is no existing written archive of Jean-Michel Frank; Megan spent years researching and meticulously assembling old polaroids from the 60s and auction catalogues to reconstruct his rooms onto gigantic, life-scale canvases, to bring rooms that no longer exist vividly back to life. We fully experience the rooms Frank designed, which are windows into Frank’s inner and external world. The rooms are dark theaters; they are beautiful on the outside, yet there is an invisible dark side hanging over them, hiding a deeply troubled man with a complex psychology. Megan’s paintings accentuate Frank’s aesthetic break with the past through this emptiness as well as his unlikely material combinations, such as wire mesh, parchment walls, or green rubber, which somehow appear inexplicably elegant. We see the simple materials such as leather, straw or wood that Frank works and transforms in stunning ways. Each room is constructed around one or two objects of importance, such as a table, an armoire, or an etching.

Through this immersive experience into Frank’s world, Megan demonstrates that the body and space are one and inseparable. Humans activate rooms; rooms are made for people, to be activated by the people who inhabit them. These rooms are empty, yet lived in. They are a place for the soul to go to rest–church-like, monastic, and rich.

To display the works in a museum show in Aspen, the artist created the ultimate visual and sensory experience by displaying her “rooms” in a cork-lined room. Frank chose cork to design Schiaparelli’s perfume bottle boxes, but on a deeper level the cork represents Frank’s own view of himself as a Proustian character, copying Proust who lived in a cork lined bedroom to escape and isolate himself from the world.

ROBERTA VERTERAMO

(b. in 1977, lives in Turin)

Roberta Verteramo masterfully works bronze into sculptural objects by incorporating distinct African influences into a long tradition of Italian design. Before designing her own pieces, Roberta founded a workshop at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan in which she spent many years restoring masterpieces by iconic designers. Inspired daily by the geniuses of design, she went on to build upon and break from their work.

Roberta’s creations deeply explore the themes of identity and culture. Who are we and where do we come from? How do common values such as unity, solidarity and sustainability unite us through a universal human code? Roberta explored the concept of identity by leaving Italy to spend time with African tribes carrying on ancestral practices. These practices have deeply inspired her work, which she integrates and transforms into a contemporary discourse. Their influence is omnipresent in Roberta’s work in subtle and less subtle ways, including the wood burning techniques she learned from tribes that she uses to make her jewelry, or more indirectly, through the incisions that she draws onto her tables, which tribes use as a demarcation of identity on the skin.

African communities view artisans as wizards because of their power to transform materials. Roberta has integrated this spirituality into the practice and discipline with which she works bronze, adopting a technique that is similar to that for sculpting marble. She uses a scalpel to create a chalk form or model, which she then works into wax, and finally into bronze. She then carves incisions onto the bronze as a reference to identity. The sculpture, however, must also be functional because human beings are an essential part of her sculptures.

In her universe a single object can have not one but multiple functionalities. Roberta built her unconventional table around the African concept that an object can be used to contain, to carry objects and to sit on. The Nianwesy selene side table, is dedicated to the tribe of the same name, which consecrates its existence to the cult of the moon, from which the artist draws inspiration.

Once she mastered the art of bronze, Roberta began experimenting new ways to combine bronze with other materials. An example is her Rizoma table, which combines resin and bronze. Rizoma, directly refers to a type of root found in Africa, whose members can carry life independently from the mother root. Roberta has also succeeded in the difficult alchemy of combining bronze with glass, creating caviar bowls with bronze interiors surrounded by murano glass. Her Om vase seeks to capture man’s first breath as the glass blowing straw expands the crystal into an egg shaped form. Roberta continuously explores and researches new textures and materials from Africa to incorporate into her work, including fragments of leaves, palm leaves, dirt, and seeds. This evolution and quest in her practice is constant, because as she says, beauty is intrinsically linked to spirituality, which drives her deep commitment to create works that deeply touch the soul.

Pierre Yves Guenec is a French designer whose work is inspired by the generations of craftsmen in his family that preceded him as well as his own background as a visual artist. Pierre Yves began his aesthetic quest as a student in art school, which he eventually dropped because he found art too abstract, conceptual and disconnected from reality. He believed that objects had intrinsic value, not merely as vehicles through which the artist conveys a deeper message. This led him to a practice in which the message was as important as the technique and the result, in other words to functional design.

Pierre Yves spent the next six years as a master blacksmith with a renowned brotherhood of French craftsmen, Les Compagnons, working on restoring heritage sites such as Versailles, Notre Dame and castles across France. From the Compagnons he received rigorous training in proportions and how to use different materials. This eventually led him to combine art and technique into his first pieces of functional design. Pierre Yves’s works are foremost sculptures, but sculptures with a purpose that perfectly balance a beautiful aesthetic with a mastery of materials and the functionality the object has to fulfill.

Meaning and form come together to create an object that one can experience with the body. As part of his process, Pierre Yves draws, draws, and draws, sometimes even for four years, before he creates a single piece, constantly adapting his design. This was the case for his first table. His objective is to create something that looks so strikingly natural that the eye cannot seize the effort behind it. His beautifully crafted pieces with rounded edges are extremely hard to master; once you master the curve you master everything else. The artist brings things back to the essential; less forms, less things, because everything is more striking with less.

Everything in this apparent effortlessness, however, is paradoxically highly researched, including the rare black marble he uses from a long lost quarry in France rediscovered only thirty years ago. It is the only marble that is purely black and white. Its black perfectly matches the luxurious Loro Piana cashmere cushion that makes this beautiful sculpture functional.

Pierre Yves’ functional sculptures are all about the materials he selects and the shapes or forms he gives to those materials. Man has sculpted stone and bronze for centuries in the history of art, a tradition within which the artist seeks to inscribe his own furniture. Pierre Yves sets out to create designs that are first of all sculptures, but sculptures with a use, constantly searching for that perfect balance between aesthetic, materials and the object’s use. His aesthetic is pure, dictated by a choice of materials such as wood, marble,which he learned to master during his craftsmen days. Pierre Yves avoids any decorative finishes, preferring to leave the materials in their naturally raw state. Even his bronzes are unpolished, or unprotected from age. They age and patina as they do in nature, along with the piece, as a testament to the passage of time. According to Pierre Yves good furniture should not be shaped by an era, but rather define it. And he has managed to do exactly that.

AN EXCEPTIONAL

PRIVATE ART DINNER On January 30th Force One collaborated on its first private art dinner with Le Cercle by Pernod-Ricard and Christofle, bringing together the worlds of luxury and art. The dinner, curated by art curator Chiara Condi, brought the two worlds together over a beautifully decorated table, dinner menu, and champagne tasting.

Guests enjoyed a beautiful evening around an ephemeral table, covered in flowers and candles, set with the best Christofle silver and china, and delighted in special cuvées of champagne and finely elaborated French cuisine.

The evening with Frank Perrin took place in the artist's hidden Parisian studio in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

On occasion of the dinner, Frank Perrin showcased “Smash,” a series of artworks created from reworked champagne wire cages that the artist crushes into forms and shapes named after major atomic explosions, such as Hiroshima and Bikini.

Through this technique the artist transforms the wires into beautiful pieces with anthropomorphic forms such as female profiles, flowers, and natural shapes that engage the viewer’s interpretation.The dinner marked Perrin’s first full exhibition of the series to the public. The first work in the series was shown to the public on the occasion of Art Basel Paris in October 2024.

Guests experienced a unique evening in the presence of the artist, Le Cercle members, and fellow art lovers. As the evening progressed, guests were invited to taste five of the finest Perrier-Jouët vintages, ending with a special edition of Cognac Martell.

French chef Bastien de Changy accompanied the champagne tasting with a special menu of five dishes designed especially to pair the champagne built around the finest French products.

The evening was co-sponsored by Christofle, which adorned the table with its finest silverware and china from their current collections, displayed on a beautifully decorated table with a flower and candle light arrangement by Cléo Perrin. Dishes were served on Christofle’s Malmaison Impériale Limoges china, which reinterprets the emblematic codes of the Malmaison collection into a modern and feminine way. Each plate had its own design corresponding to each serving of the tasting menu.

Christofle accompanied the Malmaison Impériale china with an unexpectedly baroque silverware from their Jardin D’Eden collection by Marcel Wanders, which is covered in a luscious and detailed arabesque embroidery. Champagne was served throughout the evening from the Anemone Belle Epoque champagne bucket, especially created by the master silversmiths of Christofle for Perrier-Jouët in 1902. Throughout the evening guests engaged in a meaningful exchange with the artist around his work and process, including a visual demonstration of the unique technique behind the “Smash.” Each guest took home a mini “Smash” as a token by which to remember the evening.

For the first time in France, Perrier-Jouët unveiled the new edition of its iconic “Ode à la Nature” collection to this exclusive gathering of guests. Entitled “Volutes,” this latest creation embodies the poetic fusion between art and champagne. A true collector’s piece, the bottle and its sculptural counterpart are available exclusively within Le Cercle Cellar.

The dinner for Perrier Jouet was hosted by Le Cercle, the Pernod Ricard Group’s private club in France and Monaco, which offers a hundred members unique experiences around the group’s best champagnes, wines and spirits.

by Chiara Condi Force One has once again demonstrated its growing commitment to the world of contemporary art, hosting a prestigious exhibition of Italian Analytical Painting master Enzo Cacciola.

This significant cultural moment marked the final event held in Force One’s historic portside office in Monaco, ahead of its relocation to the Rocher, just steps from the Prince’s Palace.

A key figure in the international art scene, Cacciola's work has been showcased across the globe – notably at Documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977. His Monaco debut precedes an artistic journey to Western Sahara, where he will use desert sand in his creative process. Since the 1970s, Cacciola has employed unconventional materials such as sand, cement, industrial paint, and glue, pushing the boundaries between painting and materiality.

Reflecting on a concrete piece displayed in the exhibition,

Cacciola explained his conceptual shift from “painting” to “realisation”. His chosen materials, subject to internal and unpredictable chemical reactions, are left to evolve independently. Unlike Pollock, who intervened on similar surfaces, Cacciola allows the work to “paint itself”, embracing transformation as a core element of the artwork. The result is a profound meditation on the dialogue between thought and material process.

A standout of the exhibition was Superficie Integrativa (1973), recently acquired by the Museo del Novecento in Milan. The show was curated by renowned art critic Daniele Crippa, and Force One proudly represents Enzo Cacciola in the Principality of Monaco.

O.R.: S.M., Più Corner is becoming a recognized independent creative hub in Milan, bridging the worlds of art, design, and culture. What inspired you to create this space?

S.M.: Più Corner was born out of a personal vision - one shaped by my multidisciplinary background in art, design, and creative consultancy. Coming from Iran and settling in Milan, I realized many talented creatives lacked a platform that not only showcased their work but also helped them develop their professional identity.

I wanted to create a space that functioned as a bridge between contemporary art and design, where creatives could collaborate, experiment, and grow. Più Corner is about fostering connections, creating opportunities, and pushing the boundaries of creativity.

O.R.: So Più Corner is more than just an exhibition space?

S.M.: Exactly. It’s a think tank for creative professionals. We go beyond traditional exhibitions by offering creative consultancy helping artists refine their work, advising designers on branding and positioning, and facilitating collaborations with brands and cultural institutions like Zona Blu, which is one of our key partners.

In a way, we curate not just artworks, but careers and opportunities. Whether it’s supporting an emerging artist in developing their portfolio or guiding a designer in positioning their brand, our goal is to offer real professional value while maintaining a strong creative identity.

O.R.: Più Corner brings together creatives from different disciplines. What do you think is the key to fostering meaningful collaborations?

S.M.: True collaboration goes beyond simply sharing a space-it’s about creating a dialogue between different creative minds. At Più Corner, we encourage artists and designers to step outside their usual frameworks, connect with new perspectives, and explore unexpected intersections between art, design, and culture.

Whether through exhibitions, events, or creative consultancy, we focus on building relationships that lead to authentic and impactful projects.

The best ideas come from diversity and shared energy, and that’s what we cultivate here.

O.R.: You mentioned Più Corner is also a creative consultancy. Tell us more.

S.M.: Many artists and designers struggle with presenting their work professionally-whether it’s for galleries, clients, or press. Più Corner steps in as a consultancy and incubator, helping creatives refine their narratives, develop strong portfolios, create high-quality content, and connect with the right audience.

We also produce short films and documentarystyle videos to give our network a stronger voice.

Visual storytelling is becoming essential for success in the creative industry, and we want to support artists and designers in communicating their vision in the best way possible.

O.R.: Where do you see Più Corner evolving in the coming years?

S.M.: The vision is always growing. We want to deepen our collaborations with independent designers, cultural institutions and interior design studios, while continuing to nurture emerging artists and designers.

Expanding our content creation division is also a priority, as storytelling-through film, photography, and editorial projects-has become an essential part of creative success today.

We also plan to develop stronger partnerships with the design industry, especially during key events like Milan Art, Fashion, and Design Week, to offer even more opportunities for innovation and exposure.

IT'S BURLESQUE TIME! 1ST VENICE BURLESQUE FESTIVAL

by Olivia Rose Venice has always been a city of seduction, transformation, and theatricality. From the mystery of its masks to the decadence of its carnival and the libertine legend of Casanova, the city has long embraced the allure of disguise and drama. Was it really possible that a place like this, where elegance and history dance together in the alleys and canals, could go without its own burlesque festival?

On Saturday 18 January 2025, that gap was finally filled with the first edition of the Venice Burlesque Festival, held at the charming Teatro A L’ Avogaria – a space that has long been at the heart of the city’s cultural scene.

This inaugural event brought burlesque into the Venetian spotlight, reaffirming what those close to the artform have long said: burlesque is complex, demanding, and deeply refined.

At the helm of the festival was Crazy Cat – a true Venetian, burlesque performer, show producer, and teacher for over a decade. With her vision and passion, she led the

organisation of the festival as its artistic director.

She was supported by the historic Compagnia de Calza I Antichi, the cultural association Arte-Mide (dedicated to researching and staging women’s history), and her own artistic collective Le Burlescose by Crazy Cat. The show, hosted on stage by Crazy Cat and Janette Jolie, was structured as a true competition, culminating in the crowning of the first “Dogaressa” of the Venice Burlesque Festival. This title, echoing the female counterpart to the Doge – the head of state in the Venetian Republic – was awarded to Emilie Bon Rêve.

Second and third places were honoured with titles drawn from the characters of commedia dell’arte. Lady Poopise was named Colombina, while Countess SinAtra was crowned Corallina.

Each performance was evaluated by a jury, while the audience was treated to a show filled with glamour, wit, and theatrical flair.

The event also included awards given by partner festivals.

Louise Droz and Poppy Lou received direct access to the Vintage Circus & Burlesque competition.

Hurricane Irina earned her spot in the Pisa Burlesque Festival.

Countess SinAtra, already third-place winner, was awarded twice more – an engagement with the Hurly Burly Show and a special prize from Roberta Pennisi, also known as Lady Roberta Kent, the festival’s prestigious guest of honour and an internationally renowned performer.

The evening was not simply a contest but a vivid showcase of the many faces of burlesque – from comedic timing to poetic sensuality, from historical nods to modern innovation.

The audience, diverse and enthusiastic, mirrored the variety on stage, proving that this artform speaks across generations, identities, and styles.

In its debut edition, the Venice Burlesque Festival reminded everyone that burlesque, in its elegance and its theatrical depth, continues to seduce and surprise – and above all, to bring together performers and audiences in a uniquely inclusive celebration of art.

THE NEW SOVEREIGN OF THE ROLEX MONTE-CARLO MASTERS?

by Ross Taylor As the clay court season approaches, all eyes turn to the picturesque courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club, on the Mediterranean coastline. Among the contenders, one name stands increasingly prominent: Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has established a remarkable dominance at this prestigious tournament, winning three of his last four appearances.

The Greek star has just claimed the twelfth title of his career, defeating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in Dubai - his first tournament victory since last year's triumph at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. This recent success marks an important milestone under coach Dimitris Chatzinikolaou, who joined his team last summer.

"I've seen great improvements in how I approach matches and daily work. I've finally managed to apply in matches what I've been doing in practice," Tsitsipas revealed after defeating Matteo Berrettini at Indian Wells. "Even before, I would win many practice sets against good opponents, but in matches, that spark was missing."

With his recent ascent of two positions in the ATP rankings, Tsitsipas enters the tournament with renewed confidence.

His affinity for clay courts is undeniable, and the absence of Jannik Sinner coupled with Carlos Alcaraz's seemingly dulled brilliance this season only strengthens his position as favourite.

Nevertheless, the competition remains formidable. Tennis highlander Novak Djokovic, along with Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and Casper Ruud (the latter losing to Tsitsipas in last year's final) will all be vying for the trophy.

This year's tournament will also see the introduction of automated officiating. For the first time in its history, the tournament will replace line judges with the Electronic Line Calling Live system, based on Hawk-Eye technology. Additionally, Video Review will offer players and umpires the ability to verify decisions through instant replays. This development should prevent controversies like last year's semifinal, where Tsitsipas benefited from an evident officiating oversight against Sinner.

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters heralds the beginning of the Principality's grand events season. The unique setting, with courts seemingly floating between the azure Mediterranean and Monte-Carlo's iconic skyline, creates an atmosphere unmatched in tennis.

As April approaches, the question remains: Will Stefanos Tsitsipas cement his status as the new sovereign of Monte-Carlo, or will another challenger claim the throne at one of tennis's most spectacular venues?

Nowadays it has become more and more common to question ourselves on who we truly are outside of our social environment and family constellations.

What is my life purpose and is it possible to have it all?

The journey towards a life of happiness seems to evade many people where they find themselves needing to compromise between what pleases them due the obstructing belief that we can’t have it all. What does having it all even mean? Does it mean having everything I need to be truly happy or has it become a belief of trying to reach the impossible that can never be reached and thus holds us locked in an endless attempt to reach a goal that doesn’t exist but keeps us busy working to get there under the illusion that only by reaching that goal I will be happy. And since it is impossible to reach an illusion, we slide into the surrender of a life of unhappiness.

Since I can’t have it all, where having it all is an illusionary concept of reaching an impossible goal, I settle and learn to be happy with less. And suddenly being happy seems to have become a value that needs to be learned, instead of a natural state of well-being.

And what is even more disturbing is that many find themselves feeling guilty or embarrassed if unable to feel happy in their lives. As if they are somehow failing in their quest for happiness because unable to learn to settle for less.

What if unhappiness was a red alarm trying to alert us that something in our lives is not working? That maybe the choices we are taking are not truly fulfilling us? That maybe I don’t want to settle for less? That maybe inside of me there is something telling me there is more to life and I have been told a lie that I cannot have more?

What is more?

Has more become the equivalent of not knowing how to be happy with less and thus bordering with the belief of being spoiled? What if more means a life filled with more things and people that make you feel good? What if more means you want to feel more? Laugh more? Have more moments of joy

and pleasure? Does that make you spoiled? No!!

That makes you human. A human being feeling their inner reality, feeling your soul calling for what you appreciate in life. Calling for what makes you feel good. Calling for a life that makes you feel at home with yourself – living a life that reflects your inner values and principles.

And finally: what is happiness? It is the state of feeling free to be yourself without the fear of judgement. When being yourself means living a life that fulfils you and allows you to experience your inner beauty in the physical world.

A balance between the opposites where you can feel without conditionings, express your feelings and learn to support them in your best interest, where best interest means a balanced way of supporting your well-being.

And yet, somehow for many, it has become a true luxury to be oneself in this world where we are constantly told what to like, what we need, how we should behave, what we should have, what we should desire, and so on the list is infinite. And what if for a moment we allowed ourselves just to be and breathe and observe while asking ourselves: who am I truly?

And even if the answer might take some time to become clear, if there is a quest that we should all try to endeavour ourselves towards, is the pursuit of our authenticity. I call it pursuit because many seem to have lost themselves in the expectations of others or even their own expectations guided by very ambitious brains thinking to know who someone should be without truly allowing the person to be who they actually are.

One of the most challenging feats for any restaurant is achieving harmony between these two souls, striking a delicate balance between past and present, tradition and innovation.

This equilibrium becomes even more elusive when the establishment in question - Balzi Rossi - has been synonymous with a singular culinary vision for decades, guided by the same chef who elevated this relatively small venue, perched on rocks mere metres from the Franco-Italian border, to Michelin-starred glory.

The restaurant maintains a nearby garden with fifteen terraced levels, planning seasonal productions throughout the year.

These terraces cascade down the hillside, each dedicated to specific vegetables, herbs, and fruits that thrive in the Mediterranean microclimate. The garden follows traditional agricultural techniques, using no chemicals and relying on companion planting to control pests naturally.

"We use vegetables and fruits exclusively from this land. You won't find tomatoes in winter; we don't use preserves to make tomato pasta sauce out of season. It might seem commercially impractical, but we believe in complete transparency with our guests."

This commitment to seasonality dictates the daily menu.

If morning brings freshly caught langoustines from Sanremo, then langoustines appear on the evening menu. Otherwise, the restaurant offers something different. This isn't affectation - it's an approach that aligns with a restaurant seeking to genuinely represent its locality.

The menu transforms constantly based on daily fresh ingredients. Regular patrons understand that returning after just a few days might present an entirely different menu.

If artichokes arrive in the morning, they're served raw at lunch and cooked by evening. This daily variation creates an excitement and anticipation among diners, who very often choose to surrender completely to the chef's offerings rather than selecting specific dishes.

Cooking Over Presentation Balzi Rossi emphasises distinct flavours and aromatic herbs, focusing on cooking technique rather than mere presentation.

The cuisine draws inspiration from Italian tradition, adding a touch of French feeling - a natural consequence of the restaurant's border location - creating something distinctly its own. While visually appealing, dishes never sacrifice temperature or precise cooking for aesthetics.

This philosophy prevents monotony, avoiding assembly-line repetition. "I'm enormously enthusiastic yet perpetually unsatisfied as a perfectionist," Marmo admits. "This mindset actually prevents me from accepting anything as truly definitive. Daily changes allow continuous self-challenge. It occasionally presents risks, but we've developed the expertise to immediately discern whether a dish meets our clientele's expectations."

Simplicity as Luxury "Recent decades have witnessed a shift from genuine culinary exploration to an almost obsessive pursuit of complexity and aesthetics, often masking substantive deficiencies—ideas rather than authentic cooking," Marmo reflects. "Experiment as you might, but simplicity invariably resurfaces. That is true luxury."

Sustainable Practice The practical dimension of this philosophy manifests in kitchen management. Balzi Rossi has embraced the "zero waste" approach long before it became fashionable. The restaurant's primary concern was minimising waste, addressed through daily menus, offmenu specials, and a concise carte always marked "subject to availability." Nothing is frozen - absolutely nothing – except of course ice cream bases. This approach simultaneously optimises economic management while reinforcing the restaurant's environmental consciousness.

The wine list reflects similar principles - predominantly featuring small producers from nearby regions who practice sustainable viticulture. This careful curation extends to every aspect of service, from the handcrafted tableware to the linen napkins.

The most gratifying response to this philosophy? Recently, a guest smiled and said, 'I'll return the day after tomorrow - don't tell me what's on the menu, I know it'll be a surprise!' What more could one desire?

Balzi Rossi achieves something remarkable - it maintains the formal excellence of a Michelin-starred establishment while cultivating the intimate comfort of home cooking. "One particularly satisfying achievement: numerous Michelin-starred colleagues dine here and return regularly. That surely indicates something significant."

Looking forward, the restaurant envisions various developments, from expanding the premises to enhancing services.

There’s something magical about returning to Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the spring. As the Mediterranean begins to shimmer again under the Riviera sun, the hotel reopens its doors on 18th April 2025 - just in time for Easter - with that unmistakable blend of elegance, calm and anticipation.

And at the heart of it all, Louroc reawakens. Perched at the very edge of Cap d’Antibes, the restaurant feels like it’s been carved into the coastline itself. Year after year, it continues to hold its Michelin star - a quiet confirmation of the dedication and soul that live in this kitchen.
