CEREMONY ETIQUETTE

As a courtesy to the graduates and other guests, we ask that all guests remain in their seats and not enter the arena floor area to ensure a quick flow of graduates during the ceremony. Graduates should return to their seats after crossing the stage. Degrees are conferred at the end of the commencement ceremony. Please refrain from talking during the ceremony. Graduates are not allowed to take photos of any kind while they are on stage. No signs, flags, or other displayable artifacts are allowed in the audience or onstage. Air horns and other disruptive celebratory devices are prohibited.

Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices.

PHOTOGRAPHS

HONORS AND DISTINCTION DESIGNATIONS

College of Science and Engineering degree candidates may graduate with either Latin Honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude) or with distinction (distinction or high distinction) or both. Honors citations are provisional and do not become official until all requirements for the award indicated are fulfilled.

Latin Honors Awards: Cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude graduates complete honors requirements, including research leading to an honors thesis project

in their major. Students graduating cum laude have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 for the last 60 graded credits at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities (UMTC). Magna cum laude awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.66 and summa cum laude awards require a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 on the final 60 graded credits at UMTC.

Degrees with Distinction: Students earn graduation “with distinction” or “with high distinction” based on cumulative grade point average at UMTC with at least 60 graded credits completed at UMTC. Students graduating “with distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation; students graduating “with high distinction” must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher in UMTC coursework at the time of graduation. Gold honor cords are worn by students who are graduating with distinction, and maroon and gold honor cords are for those students graduating with high distinction.

CEREMONIAL MACE

The University of Minnesota’s ceremonial mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal carried by a respected faculty member or high-ranking university administrator to lead the official procession. Processions often feature a ceremonial mace at formal academic occasions. The history of the civic mace (carried by the sergeants-at-arms) begins around the middle of the 13th century. It has been a commencement tradition at the University of Minnesota since 1961.

DECORATIVE STOLES

Decorative stoles worn around the neck represent a variety of affiliations with the University, fraternities, ethnic clubs, or professional organizations.

HISTORY OF TASSEL COLOR

In the late 19th century the Intercollegiate Commission adopted a code of academic dress. Tassel colors chosen had traditional meanings. Science and engineering were given golden yellow and orange to signify the wealth of knowledge produced by research.

About the Student Speaker

RIMIKA DHARA

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Integrated Degree Program – Master of Science in Computer Science

Rimika Dhara is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Computer Science through the University of Minnesota’s Integrated Degree Program. Originally from Mumbai, India, Rimika moved to the United States at the age of 14 and began her undergraduate journey as an international student navigating a new educational system, culture, and identity. Initially a student in electrical engineering, she explored a variety of majors before discovering her passion for coding—something she once believed wasn’t for her, especially after failing her AP computer science exam in high school and being the only girl in her first college coding class.

Her time at the University of Minnesota transformed that mindset. With the support of student organizations and a diverse, inclusive community, Rimika found the space to explore, build, and redefine what tech meant to her. She learned that she didn’t just want to code—she wanted to create, connect, and contribute. Today, her work lives at the intersection of human cognition and artificial intelligence.

As a research intern, Rimika investigates how large language models can be aligned with human preferences using reinforcement learning from human feedback. Her work spans eye-tracking-based alignment, improving language model outputs to better reflect human values, and designing recommender systems that adapt to user moods and behavioral patterns. Through internships at Oracle and Pearson, she worked on integrating large language models with complex datasets to make technical insights more interpretable, accessible, and robust.

At the University of Minnesota, Rimika was a deeply involved student leader. She served three terms on the Science and Engineering Student Board (SESB), including roles as Student Outreach Director, Mental Health Director, and Academic Affairs Director. Through these positions, she hosted events and conversations aimed at bridging gaps between students and faculty, advocating for improved curriculum feedback systems, mental health awareness, and increased representation of international and female voices in STEM.

Outside of tech, Rimika is a lifelong dancer. She has trained in Kathak, a classical Indian dance form, for 19 years and continued her passion for performance as a member of Minnesota Junoon, the University’s competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team. She also enjoys blogging about her technical experiences, working on coding side projects, reading, painting, and journaling.
