ACADEMIC COSTUME

Academic gowns date back to the 14th century, when they served two functions of nearly equal importance: to indicate the academic rank of the wearer and to keep the scholar warm in the drafty stone halls of academia.

The markings, cut, and colors of the modern-day academic costume–cap, gown, and sometimes hood–indicate the academic degree, the field of study, and the institution that granted the degree. Master’s gowns are black with pointed sleeves. Doctor’s gowns in the United States traditionally have been black with velvet front facings and crossbars on the sleeves, but in recent years a number of universities have adopted gowns of distinctive school colors.

A new University of Minnesota Ph.D. gown and matching tam made their appearance in 1988 to celebrate the centenary of the first Minnesota doctor of philosophy degree. The new Minnesota gown is maroon, trimmed with black velvet chevrons and gold metallic braid. The traditional gown may still be worn. The Minnesota hood, which may be worn by anyone with a master’s or doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota, is black with a maroon chevron on gold. Each institution has its own pattern of colors on the hood, worn around the neck and down the back of the gown. The velvet edging shows the field: sage green for doctor of audiology, pink for doctor of musical arts, blue for doctor of philosophy, white for master of arts, brown for master of fine arts, pink for master of music, and gold for master of science. Master’s candidates wear their hoods throughout the commencement ceremony while new doctorates are hooded on stage.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE

The University of Minnesota mace, a ceremonial staff used for formal occasions, was carried for the first time in 1961 by Regents Professor of Physics Alfred O.C. Nier at the inauguration of President O. Meredith Wilson. Art professor Philip Morton designed the original mace: a crystal sphere four inches in diameter surmounted by the North Star, symbol of the state of Minnesota, on a solid aluminum handle set with the University Regents Seal.

* Graduates are listed alphabetically by degree. If an individual’s degree was officially awarded by March 31, 2025, the degree award date is indicated. Advisors of record are included for doctoral degree candidates. Minors are included for completed degrees only.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this program. Please note that the student’s transcript, rather than the commencement program, serves as the student’s official record.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

ETHELIND B . KABA

Executive Director, Ann Bancroft Foundation

As the Executive Director of the Ann Bancroft Foundation, Ethelind oversees the efforts of the Foundation to make life-changing opportunities available to early childhood and adolescent girls in Minnesota. In her role, she is responsible for strategic direction, shepherding high-impact awareness campaigns, maintaining strong community partnerships, expanding the reach of the Foundation, and working closely with the board of directors and staff to raise the annual budget, and managing the financial operations.

Before joining the Foundation, Ethelind was the Vice President of External Affairs at the Center for Economic Inclusion, the nation’s first organization exclusively dedicated to advancing economic inclusion across all sectors in a major metropolitan area. In her role, she led strategic, effective communications, storytelling, marketing, and brand management and fund development initiatives to support efforts to build a racially equitable and inclusive economy.

Passionate about advancing equity, human dignity, and potential, Ethelind previously founded The Stargirl Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering teen and tween girls, for which she was named a Changemaker by MN Women’s Press. She also offers her experience and talents to several organizational committees and boards, including:

• National Governing Board Member, The Jeremiah Program, a nationwide organization dedicated to transforming the lives of low-income single mothers and their children

• Board of Regents, Augsburg University, a private university known for its commitment to an intentional experience for all students, defined by excellence and guided by faith

• Committee Member, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, advocates for affordable housing

• Previous volunteer roles also include serving as a member of the Edina Public Schools Legislative Action Committee and TPT Community Resiliency Advisory Council.

A multidisciplinary storyteller, Ethelind has worked with local Twin Cities emerging artists, designers, and small business entrepreneurs to build engaged audiences. In all her work, Ethelind strives to spark in others the same curiosity about the human condition that motivates her.

Ethelind’s formal educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from Hamline University, a master’s degree in strategic communication at the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and a Policy fellowship at the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs. In 2022, Ethelind was selected to represent the Twin Cities region at Harvard Business School’s Young American Leaders Program.

Ethelind has been published in several publications and invited to speak to corporate and nonprofit organizations nationwide on economic mobility, removing barriers for women and girls to thrive, advancing workplace belonging, and breaking generational cycles of poverty. In 2024, Ethelind was included on the Twin Cities Business 100 List and recognized as one of 50 Black Leaders to know in Minnesota.

An immigrant from Ghana, Ethelind lives in Edina with her family, where she is still trying to figure out how to fall in love with road trips.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

The University of Minnesota, ranked among the nation’s top public universities, reflects the state’s deep commitment to education. It is almost alone among universities in the United States in its combination of three characteristics: an international research university, a land-grant institution with a strong tradition of education and public service, and a metropolitan academic community.

The Twin Cities campus, the University’s largest campus, is made up of 17 colleges and offers the full range of academic and professional degrees. A comprehensive campus in Duluth offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The Morris campus offers a four-year liberal arts program. Crookston offers associate and baccalaureate degrees in technical, career-oriented programs. Rochester is the newest campus and serves the academic and professional needs of southeastern Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota was founded as a preparatory school in 1851, seven years before the territory of Minnesota became a state. Financial problems forced the school to close during the Civil War, but with the help of Minneapolis entrepreneur John Sargent Pillsbury, it reopened in 1867. Known as the father of the University, Pillsbury, who was a University regent, state senator, and governor, used his influence to establish the school as the official recipient of public support from the Morrill Land-Grant Act, designating it as Minnesota’s land-grant university.

William Watts Folwell was inaugurated as the first president of the University on December 22, 1869. In 1873, two students received the first bachelor of arts degrees. In 1888, the first doctor of philosophy degree was awarded. The Duluth campus joined the University in 1947; the Morris campus opened in 1960, and the Crookston campus in 1966, and the Rochester campus in 2006.

One of the nation’s largest schools, the University of Minnesota offers baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in virtually every field—from medicine to business, law to liberal arts, and science and engineering to architecture. Enrollment in spring 2025 was 61,888 on all five campuses. Enrollment was 49,920 on the Twin Cities campus, 8,156 at Duluth, 2,379 at Crookston, 915 at Morris, and 518 at Rochester.

University alumni include several Nobel Prize winners, a former chief justice of the United States, two former vice presidents, the heads of Fortune 500 companies, pioneers in medicine, two astronauts, civil rights leaders, top journalists, and men and women who have achieved distinction in every field.

Alumni and their families and friends are always welcome at the University. Alumni are invited to continue their relationship with the University through the University of Minnesota Alumni Association and its college associations.
