Engineer’s Week homemade car race: The attached photo is of the ASME’s entry in the 1970 Engineer’s Week homemade car race. I (Tom Burke) am driving and I think it is Pete Hovde hanging out back. It was powered by a water jet using compressed air. The Aeronautical Engineering Department’s car was powered by a tank of highly compressed air with a convergingdiverging nozzle and the EE’s had a go cart with two (or maybe four) starter motors for power. I also remember a Volkswagon with an engine converted to run on compressed air; it sounded a little like the car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (it may have been built by an individual rather than a department or organization). I think we (MEs) won because we dyed the water green and sprayed the crowd with it. Fun times! Tom Burke B.S. ME Class of 1970
