MAD MARCH HARE POITÍN

THE ORIGINAL IRISH SPIRIT Poitín is a spirit that predates anything you’ve ever tasted, including whiskey.

First distilled by Irish monks in the 6th century, Poitín has played a central role in Irish drinking culture for centuries.

Ireland’s oldest spirit was forced underground in 1661 by the

British crown, who tried to tax it to extinction. However, Ireland’s love affair with Poitín never died and it was secretly distilled for over 300 years. Legalised in 1997, Irish Poitín is returning to prominence thanks in part to the booming cocktail scene.

state of Oaxaca in the “Capital of Mezcal”, in Santiago Matatlán.

The Los Javis story began over three decades ago when Don Javier Mateo I and his wife Doña Gloria built the family’s first

distillery (more commonly known as a palenque), with hopes

of creating a spirit that embodied the essence of their Oaxacan tradition. Los Javis Mezcal is now the only family-owned and

operated mezcal company which exports to the US, Europe and Asia.

PUSSER’S RUM

THE ORIGINAL ROYAL NAVY RUM

Intrepid Spirits are excited to add Pusser’s Rum to the portfolio

within the Irish market.

The early blend of Navy Rum was more art than science. The raw rum derived from the contributing stills was stocked in barrels between 160 and 180 proof, too strong to be palatable so

dilution after blending was required. The ship’s crew relied on

its purser to blend, test, and issue the finished rum at proof. The

purser, often referred to as “pusser”, would mix the raw rum with

water and add a few black gunpowder grains. If the mixture failed

to ignite in the sunlight, the purser would be mocked for watering the rum.
