Intrepid Museum Annual Report 2024

Page 1

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

2024 was an exciting and important year for the Intrepid Museum, one marked by bold initiatives, inspiring experiences and a renewed commitment to honoring the past while charting the future.

Among the most thrilling highlights was our presentation of Apollo: When We Went to the Moon, the largest exhibition in our four-decades-plus history. This extraordinary exhibition used the monumental achievements of the Space Race and lunar landing to spark conversations about the future of space exploration. At the same time, it paid tribute to Intrepid’s own legacy as a recovery vessel for the Mercury and Gemini missions. Simply put, it was out of this world.

We celebrated the triumphant return of a beloved aviation icon: Concorde. After an extensive, months-long refresh, this recordbreaking aircraft came back to the Museum, looking as sleek and stunning as ever. We were honored to welcome a legendary piece

of aviation history to our collection – a World War II FG-1D Corsair. This remarkable aircraft, known for its impact in the Pacific theater and one of the most frequently flown planes off Intrepid, was painstakingly restored before going on display in early 2025.

I am fond of saying that the true power of the Museum lies not just in the objects on display, but also in the impact we make every day, and I am immensely proud of the work we do at the heart of our mission: to educate, engage and inspire. Through our nationally recognized STEM and history education programs, we reach more than 100,000 students annually.

Our access initiatives are award-winning and deeply meaningful, delivering tailored experiences for our veterans, active-duty service members and individuals of all abilities. And we remain steadfast in ensuring access for all, with many opportunities to visit the Museum at reduced cost or free of charge.

Our annual Girls in Science & Engineering Day is a prime example of the Museum’s

commitment to encouraging diversity in STEM, ensuring that young women see a place for themselves in these vital fields. This dynamic, hands-on event is designed to inspire and empower the next generation of female scientists, engineers and innovators. In 2024, we celebrated its 10th anniversary with a stellar lineup and record attendance.

Through the pages that follow, I invite you to take a deeper dive into our accomplishments and initiatives and learn more about this unique and remarkable institution at the crossroads of history and innovation.

My sincere gratitude for being a part of our ongoing journey.

EXHIBITIONS

PRESERVING AVIATION HISTORY

In October 2024, a legendary piece of aviation history touched down at the Intrepid Museum: a World War II FG-1D Corsair fighter-bomber aircraft. Corsairs flew from USS Intrepid as night-fighters in 1944, and as the ship’s primary fighter in 1945, at the height of the Kamikaze campaign. Though thousands of Corsairs were built, few remain intact today. Throughout the fall, visitors were able to watch our aircraft restoration team work hard in the Museum’s Aircraft Restoration Hangar, where they repainted the plane with the markings of a Corsair flown by Intrepid aviator Alfred Lerch.

The opportunity to house this iconic aircraft came about thanks to the Museum’s reputation for excellence in exhibition design. According to the Museum’s Director of Collections

Danielle Swanson, “We were approached in February 2024 by the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida. They were very impressed with our Final Flight exhibition and made the Intrepid Museum their first choice to serve as caretaker of this incredible machine. We are beyond thrilled to add this aircraft to our one-of-a-kind collection.”

The Corsair will not only augment the Museum’s history and civics education programs: its visually striking inverted gull wing and massive propeller will serve as an inspiration for the next generation of innovators, demonstrating fundamental concepts in aerospace STEM for the 100,000 school-aged children and teachers participating in the Museum’s education programs.

The Museum’s FG-1D Corsair is on loan courtesy of the National Naval Aviation Museum on behalf of the Navy History and Heritage Command. Funding for Corsair was generously provided by The Kislak Family Foundation, Inc., Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust, Cushman & Wakefield, Anonymous, the Ng Family Foundation, Gayley Forsyth Knight, Jocelyn Forsyth Vick, and Elizabeth Candace Forsyth.

COMMUNITY SPACE AT PIER 86

The Intrepid Museum celebrated the opening of 4,000 square feet of new public space on Pier 86 in Hudson River Park with a ribboncutting on May 14, 2024. This project marks the completion of the restoration of the last remaining section of the original pier, built more than 80 years ago.

To prepare for this major undertaking, the Museum removed a decommissioned pier-side chiller plant and replaced it with a state-of-the-art “on-ship” cogeneration plant. The old wooden piles supporting this section of the pier were also replaced with steel piles. This new open park space, located next to the Museum’s British Airways Concorde, will host programs, exhibitions and events, offering an expansive setting along the West Side waterfront.

“These cumulative efforts highlight the Museum’s ongoing commitment to enhancing local community spaces, creating more efficient and cleaner energy, and supporting New York City’s economic growth, said Museum President Susan Marenoff-Zausner. “We are thrilled to contribute to the cultural and recreational enrichment of our neighborhood.”

AN EPIC EXHIBITION BLASTS OFF

Apollo: When We Went to the Moon opened on March 26, 2024, as the Museum’s largestever temporary exhibition, occupying 9,000 square feet of the Space Shuttle Pavilion. The exhibition immersed visitors in interactive media and rarely seen artifacts from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center® archives, highlighting the people, technologies and global events that enabled American astronauts to become the first to walk on the Moon.

The Intrepid Museum was the ideal venue to host this one-of-a-kind exhibition, co-produced by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and the renowned exhibition company Flying Fish. As Museum President Susan Marenoff-Zausner

noted, it “underscores Intrepid’s historic heritage with the space program, having served as a primary recovery vessel for the Mercury-Atlas 7 and Gemini 3 space missions.”

The exhibition also bridged the legacy of early capsule missions and one of the Museum’s largest artifacts: the space shuttle Enterprise.

While Intrepid played a role in paving the way for the Apollo program in the mid-20th century, Enterprise marked NASA’s shift toward life in low Earth orbit.

More than 10,000 visitors attended public programs developed for the exhibition run, including Betty Skelton, a live performance honoring the first female space test pilot.

Education programs were specially tailored for K-12 school groups and teachers, individuals with disabilities and their families, and veterans. These offerings were well attended across all groups. Over 11,600 participants took advantage of events such as Early Morning Openings for children with autism and their families, as well as teacher professional development sessions featuring former NASA Astronaut Mike Massimino.

Apollo: When We Went to the Moon blasted off on September 2, leaving behind echoes of space history and an impact on our visitors that will resonate for years to come.

Apollo: When We Went to the Moon at the Intrepid Museum was partially funded thanks to generous support from Greg Olsen. Public and education program support for the exhibition generously provided by the Michael Tuch Foundation.

THE RETURN OF ALPHA DELTA

British Airways Concorde G-BOAD—the fastest commercial aircraft ever to cross the Atlantic—temporarily left the Intrepid Museum in August 2023 for a comprehensive nose-totail restoration at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This months-long process included paint removal, sanding and recoating, using the same colors and markings that made Concorde an aviation legend. As one of the most visually striking examples of aerospace innovation on display worldwide, and part of a fleet of supersonic commercial aircraft in operation between 1976 and 2003, Concorde’s restoration not only preserves aviation history but also inspires future generations who walk beneath its graceful wings and tour its compact cabin.

Known affectionately as “Alpha Delta,” the plane returned to Pier 86 via barge. The three-hour trip from Jersey City to Hell’s Kitchen mirrored the time the Concorde once took to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Aviation enthusiasts from around the world tuned into the Museum’s “Concorde Cam” to watch Alpha Delta float

past New York City icons like the Statue of Liberty during its journey upriver. The plane’s fresh paint job and iconic dart-like silhouette exuded a sense of supersonic speed. At the end of its voyage, on March 14, 2024, the plane was carefully hoisted back into position at the Museum, its home since first opening to the public in 2004.

Visitors were clearly eager for its return. Tours of Concorde’s cabin have sold out upon reopening and continue to fill up quickly throughout the summer months.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

FLEET WEEK

Over 25,381 guests joined us for an unforgettable Fleet Week and Memorial Day. Twenty-five partner organizations—from the Army and Coast Guard’s elite silent drill teams to Naval STEM and the American Legion— offered free performances, hands-on activities, and more at Pier 86. In addition to service members visiting from nearby ships, the Museum provided free admission to more than 650 current and former military personnel as part of the Blue Star Museums initiative, thanks to support from Bank of America.

Fleet Week culminated in a powerful Memorial Day ceremony, which included the unfurling of a 100-foot flag, the placing of four ceremonial wreaths in the Hudson River, and a flyover by Navy fighter jets.

KIDS WEEK

The Museum’s keystone annual festivals— Kids Week and Fleet Week—continue to set new engagement standards!

During Kids Week (February 17–24), nearly 25,000 visitors poured into the Intrepid Museum to enjoy demonstrations, hands-on workshops and performances by 48 partner institutions ranging from NASA to the Billion Oyster Project to Blue Man Group.

EDUCATION

INSPIRATION ACADEMY. A NEW MODEL FOR TEACHER RETENTION

Studies have shown that inspiration, joy, and a sense of belonging dramatically improve teacher retention, especially for early-career educators from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations. These cohorts are leaving the profession at high rates due to burnout and isolation, a major problem since numerous studies also link teacher diversity to improved student outcomes.

To help sustain these teachers during their first five years of service, the Intrepid Museum recently unveiled a specially designed ecosystem of supports and programs called Inspiration Academy.

This robust three-year initiative aims to reach 655 K-12 teachers in New York state schools who either identify as BIPOC themselves or work in schools serving BIPOC students,

impacting over 20,000 students across the state. In 2024 alone, Inspiration Academy engaged 208 New York State educators who collectively teach 13,794 students, marking a promising start to this vitally important endeavor.

Inspiration Academy offers participants professional development and training opportunities, including a five-day paid summer institute, peer support networks, in-person seminars, and virtual workshops in collaboration with renowned partners such as the National WWII Museum and Hudson River Park. These programs are focused on integrating inclusive approaches to STEM and history, supporting all learners and fostering both belonging in the classroom and joy in learning.

The Intrepid Inspiration Academy has been made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

ADVANCING 21ST CENTURY STEM EDUCATION

Iteration and innovation are at the heart of the Museum’s new STEM youth leadership program, Techs of Tomorrow. As a founding partner of the Women Forward NYC initiative, which supports economic mobility, Techs of Tomorrow aims to reduce the gender gap in aerospace and engineering spaces by exposing participants to college and career pathways, connecting them with mentors and helping them develop essential 21st-century workplace skills.

Techs of Tomorrow builds on 15 successful years of the Museum’s former GOALS for Girls initiative, using a similar proven framework that combines intensive summer work experience with opportunities for school-year internships. Twenty-five Techs of Tomorrow Summer Work Experience participants received a paid stipend

supporting 150 hours of work/study thanks to the Museum’s inaugural partnership with the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Their time was broken down into weekly modules, introducing participants to fundamental concepts in engineering design, the physics of flight, computer science and AR/VR development.

Students visited major aerospace industry hubs, including hangars at JFK International Airport. “Mentorship Mornings” played a key role in inspiring participants, featuring firsthand accounts from women working across a wide range of aerospace careers: from astrophysics professors to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) specialists. To synthesize and apply what they learned each week, participants developed space

habitats and green propellants using the Engineering Design Process, and created 3D-modeled floor plans and wireframes for mobile apps.

The Summer Work Experience concluded on August 16, 2024, with a public presentation of the participants’ projects. Selected alumnae returned to the Museum in October for the first cohort of Techs of Tomorrow school-year internships, where the students continued their learning journey and honed their tech skills by creating original immersive experiences that draw on the Museum’s historical collection.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CODERS

The Museum’s second-annual mini-hackathon, Coding Together, proved to be a hit with our cohort of 51 students in grades 6-12. In fact, 100% of survey respondents indicated they enjoyed the event!

Coding Together featured three workshops on programming languages including Scratch, Python and JavaScript, as well as group projects that challenged participants to prototype a wireframe before coding their program. These next-gen developers then created functional webpages covering a wide range of subjects from computer literacy to voting rights.

Coding Together was made possible through support from the Pinkerton Foundation, Con Edison, The SAP NS2 Together Fund of Vanguard Charitable and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

TEN AMAZING YEARS: THE CONTINUED SUCCESS OF GIRLS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DAY

The Museum worked tirelessly to mark a decade of its highly popular Girls in Science and Engineering Day, and the response was overwhelming! More than 1,550 pre-registered attendees enjoyed a day of free, handson activities, exciting demonstrations and captivating discussions led by experts from the Intrepid Museum and partner institutions including the Cooper Union, Hudson River Park, Women in Aviation – New York Chapter and many more.

This year saw a nearly 400% increase in attendance compared to last year, as well as a significant uptick in partner registration, clearly demonstrating the continued demand for high-quality STEM education programs aimed at girls and young women. Participants overwhelmingly indicated that they felt increasingly inspired to explore science and had a great deal of fun learning something new. Here’s to another decade inspiring the next generation of women leaders and innovators!

Girls in Science and Engineering Day was made possible with generous support from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, Con Edison, and the SAP NS2 Together Fund of Vanguard Charitable.

A RARE ASTRONOMICAL TREAT FOR ALL

On the afternoon of April 8, 2024, a nearly total solar eclipse occurred over New York City for the first time in 40 years, casting the city in an eerie afternoon twilight! The Intrepid Museum was the destination in New York to watch this incredible celestial event.

Astronomy enthusiasts traveled from near and far to enjoy an unobstructed view from the aircraft carrier Intrepid’s flight deck. From the Museum’s magnificent vantage point high above the streets, and armed with free commemorative eclipse glasses distributed on-site, guests watched the sun shrink into a narrow crescent as darkness settled over the city.

The Museum ensured that both in-person and virtual audiences could enjoy the experience equally and safely. An inclusive virtual program held the prior evening provided registrants with at-home activity packets and resources for safe eclipse viewing.

At the Museum, guests enjoyed programs from Museum educators explaining not only how eclipses work, but also how eclipse glasses and other safety procedures protect our vision. The Museum’s solar eclipse event garnered major media attention, reaching an audience of more than 1 billion people across broadcast, online and social media outlets—now that’s astronomical!

RECOGNIZED AS A NASA COMMUNITY ANCHOR

This spring, NASA named the Intrepid Museum as one of just 17 Community Anchors across the United States—institutions that served as trusted local hubs for aerospace and STEM learning. In recognition of this role, NASA awarded the Museum a $40,000 grant to launch five NASA Explore Days. These free public events were designed to spark curiosity about space and science, especially among Black and Latinx families with students in grades 5-8.

The inaugural NASA Explore Day kicked off on Friday, September 27, 2024, alongside one of the Museum’s “Free Fridays,” which offer after-hours access to the Museum at no cost. Additional free programming included

a space-themed Movie Night and an Astro Live presentation, part of the Museum’s ongoing monthly series that brings audiences behind-the-scenes with scientists, engineers and astronauts.

Outreach for the event was conducted in English and Spanish, and on-site signage and activities were offered in both languages. Nearly 4,000 participants registered for the event, and more than 37,000 tuned in from home as three former NASA Astronauts— including Sidney Gutierrez, who became the first U.S.-born Hispanic astronaut in 1984—swapped stories about major milestones in NASA’s space shuttle era.

The Museum’s education programs are supported in part by the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA).
