The Intrepid Museum has delivered high-quality educational programming to students, teachers and families for over 30 years. Centered on the historic aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, our unique collection spans a halfcentury of technological innovation. Highlights of the collection are 28 aircraft, including the A12 spy plane, the Cold War-era submarine Growler and the space shuttle Enterprise.

The Museum is a unique resource in the study of history, science and technology for inspiring innovation and developing the next generation of leaders. Grounded in the best practices of inquiry-based, experiential and objectbased learning, along with 21st century tools of digital outreach and engagement, our education programs are designed to provide meaningful and engaging experiences for learners of all ages and abilities.

SCHOOL, TEACHER AND COLLEGE PROGRAMS

P R E K — 12 T H G R A D E The Intrepid Museum’s Education Department offers educator-led programs for students in pre-K through 12th grade visiting from schools, homeschool groups and after-school programs. In addition, we offer professional learning experiences for teachers. Programs explore the intersection of scientific innovation and history, placing technological advances within the historical context that drove the need for creative problem-solving. Exhibit explorations, experiments and inquiry make learning at the Museum a rich and unique experience.

As a contracted vendor of the New York City Department of Education, we are recognized for delivering quality education programs for the pre-K–12 audience, and are authorized to offer Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credit by the New York State Department of Education through professional development experiences for in-service teachers. Programs are aligned with state and local standards and support the Next Generation Science Standards.

All programs are differentiated according to grade level, and our team of speciallytrained Access educators can make sure any adaptations to support learners with 2

physical, developmental or emotional challenges are in place.

Social Studies and History Programs Each social studies or history program at the Intrepid Museum includes close examination of Museum artifacts, photographs, historic spaces and exhibits to encourage greater understanding of the people and the technology behind Intrepid in a historical context. Articulated learning outcomes for all social studies and history programs include analysis, interpretation and reading for context clues.

SCHOOL, TEACHER AND COLLEGE PROGRAMS All Hands for All Ages

have an interdisciplinary approach that integrates humanities and the arts.

Depending on grade level and curricular focus, programs may explore advances in aircraft technology and design, space science, the Space Race, and engineering as it relates to the form and function of the historic ship Intrepid and other artifacts. In all programs, students explore and experiment through hands-on activities that build design thinking and problem-solving skills.

Learning outcomes for science programs include problem solving, overcoming challenges and understanding the progress of technology.

All Hands for All Ages (60–90 Min.) Multisensory explorations of the Museum are available for self-contained classes.

These explorations are designed to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students. All school programs can be modified for groups with special needs if requested in advance.

HOMESCHOOL PROGRAMS Designed with the homeschooling community in mind, homeschool programs focus on the National Historic Landmark Intrepid, plus the Museum’s aircraft, artifacts and exhibits. Appropriate for a range of ages and abilities, activities may include an educator-led tour of the Museum and a chance to explore various topics through historic artifacts, photographs and demonstrations.

Students and their families also get time to explore the Museum on their own.

Homeschool programs are held several times throughout the year and require advance registration.

Homeschool groups of 10 or more students may also take part in the Museum’s school programs for grades pre-K–12. All reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.

PROFE S SION AL LE ARNING FOR TE ACHER S The Museum offers a variety of opportunities and formats to refresh, get inspired, learn from experts and network with colleagues.

The Intrepid Museum is a New York State Education Department-approved Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) provider and we offer P-credit courses as part of the New York City Department of Education’s After School Professional Development Program (ASPDP) throughout the year. These courses apply toward teachers’ salary differential +30 requirement.

At Your School: An educator visits your school for a 45–90 minute session with your faculty to introduce the Museum’s resources, simple science inquiry techniques or the incorporation of historical documents into the classroom curriculum.

CROSSING THE LINE THE ATER RE SIDENC Y

Museum educators engage over twenty thousand children and adults each year through daily demonstrations. Topics include the principles of flight, fueling rockets, the vacuum of space and the space race. All demonstrations take place in the Museum’s galleries or pop-up planetarium and are free with the price of admission. For the daily schedule of demonstrations, please ask at the Museum’s Information Desk.

(2019-2021) Crossing the Line Players is a ten-part research residency and performance program where tween and teen youth, ages 12–16, are guided through the mechanics of research and historical-thinking skills—including analysis of evidence, synthesis of information, interpretation and development of an argument. They then develop their own historically–based performance pieces to be presented to their peers, families, friends and other Museum constituents. LIBRARY AND COMMUNIT Y PROGRAMS The Intrepid Museum travels throughout the five boroughs, delivering handson science and history content to New Yorkers of all ages at libraries, community centers and alternative learning sites.

INTREPID ADVENTURES Intrepid Adventures are enrichment programs designed to provide children ages 5–12, their siblings and parents/ caregivers an opportunity to have fun and learn together. Each Adventure is inspired by a Museum exhibition. Programs are one hour and free with Museum admission.

PROGRAMS FOR VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES

VE TERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES The Museum offers educational and social opportunities for current and former military service members, their friends and their family.

Intrepid After Hours invites military veterans and service members to experience the Museum at night. Explore the Museum without the crowds, then join peers for conversation, exploration and a catered dinner. Program themes and activities vary, ranging from behind-thescenes tours of the Museum to veteranled arts workshops.

Vet Video Chats build social connections and provide stimulating conversations for veterans who are unable to visit the Museum. This online program highlights objects and spaces within the Museum, emphasizing the stories of former crew members and inviting participants to ask questions, make connections to their own experiences and share stories.

The Intrepid Museum offers customized guided tours for organizations that serve veterans. Programs are free for NYC-based organizations and offered at a discounted rate to outside groups.

Veterans Plus programs are special events that are relevant to the military 10

community, including film screenings, concerts and mental health workshops.

They allow veterans to bring guests, such as civilian friends and family members, to share in the experience.

Military Family Programs include a handson tour of the Museum, experiments and design challenges intended to engage the whole family.

Members of the public who want a deeper interpretation of the history and science inherent in the Museum’s collections and historic spaces can take a public tour or a private VIP tour with the Museum’s expert educators, who lead fascinating explorations of the Museum and provide greater insight into the artifacts on display. A variety of tours are available daily, and tickets for VIP or hardhat tours can be booked in advance.

Expert educators regularly give gallery talks covering the historical context of the collections. These talks are generally 15– 20 minutes and are free with the price of admission. Visit the Museum’s information desk to see what is being offered during your visit!

OUT OF SCHOOL TIME

THE CAREER LADDER The Intrepid Museum believes that with the right resources and adult allies to support them, young people can make meaningful change in their lives and communities. The Career Ladder begins with two major programs: Greater Opportunities Advancing Leadership and Science (GOALS) for Girls The GOALS Summer Intensive is a free STEM program for rising 9th and 10th grade girls who are New York City residents and attend a school in the five boroughs. The program runs for six weeks each summer, and challenges participants to engage in unique STEM experiments and projects, sharpen public speaking skills, collaborate with peers from across New York City and visit various STEM organizations in the five boroughs. Students will learn about careers in STEM fields firsthand from successful women who will share their personal professional journeys. Alumnae of the GOALS Summer Intensive are eligible to apply for a paid internship. The GOALS program also offers a regular series of events geared toward engaging girls, their families and friends in STEM and college/ career readiness.

The Youth Leadership Institute at the Intrepid Museum (YLI@Intrepid) A free, yearlong series of programs and 14

experiences that helps high school juniors develop critical skills and insights necessary for maturing into engaged and active citizens. YLI@Intrepid encourages students to activate their leadership potential, sharpen their public speaking skills and become engaged in community and civic programs, all while preparing them to take the next step in their education—the college application process. Following participation in the program, students are eligible to apply for YLI@Intrepid Interns, a paid summer internship program.

TEEN AND COLLEGE NIGHTS Teen and College Nights at the Museum provide a safe space where young people can learn more about historical or scientific concepts highlighted in the Museum’s collections. Junior staff members, who are graduates of the GOALS for Girls and the YLI@Intrepid programs, develop the nights’ offerings and assist

staff with marketing and running the event. This program occurs twice a year.

CASA AFTER SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP S Cultural After School Adventures (CASA) pairs New York City schools with culturally-and-community-based organizations throughout the five boroughs. CASA helps address the social and academic needs of students in the after-school hours, and expands relationships between cultural institutions and the school community.

The Intrepid Museum’s Education Department uses the history of the aircraft carrier Intrepid as a catalyst to cover STEM topics. Each lesson demonstrates practical applications to school subjects and includes handson learning in the after-school hours at both the school and at the Museum.
