T. J G has been hard at work designing and crafting luxury homes in Vancouver’s most exclusive neighbourhoods since 1979. The company’s reputation for excellence, opulence and attention to detail is well deserved, and as a result, it has built up a truly loyal customer base. Located in the fashionable Shaughnessy neighbourhood in beautiful British Columbia, Elements Estate is a seven-bedroom, tenbathroom family home. The client’s brief for the property was for a dream home exuding luxury, quality, beauty and nobility. There was a requirement not only to accommodate a wellness spa, versatile entertaining spaces, and lots of storage, but also to comply with exacting
local planning regulations and West Coast climatic conditions. The resulting home, with its seven fireplaces, three kitchens, two hot tubs, pool and sauna is at the same time grand and homely. The outdoor kitchen design in particular is located in the back yard and extends into the family room through automated sliding doors, making it the ideal entertaining area. It comes equipped with a bartender’s sink, Teppanyaki and BBQ grills, Ice machine, pizza oven, refrigerator, TV and surround sound, multiple ceiling heaters, and a lounge area surrounded by a fire wall complete with a retractable roof for weather protection and all year use. Wonderful landscaping outside includes custom waterfalls and colour changing lighting.

The waterfalls, which are all man-made and hand sculpted out of concrete to match the house, were incorporated into the basement well for a more natural feeling of a retreat that is very impressive. The oversized feature is complete with variable speed pumps and colour-changing lighting that seamlessly syncs with all the other back yard features and music. Working in collaboration with Sublime Interior Design, the interior is luxurious and spacious, whilst at the same time, practical for family life. From the open concept kitchen family room, to a lower floor bar and wine room, Elements Estate offers every modern convenience, including a fully automated smart home system and elevator. Marble is used extensively throughout, the entrance foyer
boasts a double height ceiling and sweeping grand staircase, whilst the living room creates an area for more formal gatherings, with its custom designed furniture, back-lit art, damask wallpaper and Schonbek wall sconces. The custom walnut mantel and gas fireplace flows with the foyer staircase railing, and contrasts well with the porcelain marble flooring. The dining room consists of many details from the wall panelling to the crown and ceiling moulding. To add interest in the space and a focal point, there are two chandeliers. This room connects to the wok kitchen/butler’s pantry and den through the use of integrated hidden doors. Overall, every room is beautifully enhanced by custom furnishings, beautiful wood finishes and moulded plaster accents.

I has extensive experience in guiding clients through the design stages of incorporating contemporary and traditional luxury products to complement a home. Exceeding all expectations, the company successfully designed two beautiful award-winning projects: An Estate to Remember and You & Me By The Sea, both located in Massachusetts, USA. For An Estate to Remember, the clients wanted help to renovate a master bathroom in a 10,000 sq. ft. estate. The client, known for his precision, had but two requests for his master bathroom redesign: complete the project on his timeline and spare no expense in transforming the room into an oasis. The first of many changes was modifying the layout to take advantage of the ocean views, which entailed relocating the shower to the centre of the room. To elevate the couple’s grooming rituals,
premium and custom-designed materials were used, while the shower was outfitted with stateof-the-art technology. You & Me By The Sea is a 1,000 sq. ft. cottage. Casabella Interiors focused on creating multi-purpose zones and curated custom elements to elevate the overall design. A large island was used instead of a dining room table, with neutral palettes throughout to ensure nothing eclipsed the idyllic sea views. Moving walls and stealing inches from rooms of every shape and size, the company finessed the home down to the inch to maximise on its functionality. The master bedroom was configured by placing the bed where the closet originally stood, giving the homeowners a chance to enjoy full ocean views. The use of opulent materials and detailing combined with an eye for detail has created two unique properties, typical of Casabella Interiors.

ARCO A a family owned boutique architectural firm located in San Jose, Costa Rica. Founded in 1972, today the firm works exclusively with international clients, providing highend custom architectural design services for luxury vacation homes and investment properties in Costa Rica, Panama and the Caribbean. In designing Villa Serena on Costa Rica, their client requested a luxury holiday home accommodating up to 12 people at a time. High on their list of desires were extensive glazed surfaces maximising the views, and a design which made the best use of the terrain, with simple clean spaces and low energy costs. It was the curving nature of the site, with a
sharp downhill slope towards the ocean, which inspired the home’s final curved layout and front façade. It was decided that the best solution to enhance the tropical feel whilst also making the property feel homely was a modular concept with a cantilevered bridge between the swimming pool and main terraces. The finished villa is a combination of openness and integration, and provides a good flow of spaces and elements, making it feel tropical while also enjoying privacy. SARCO Architects’ clients expressed that the finished home fulfilled their desire for a casual easy to live with tropical beach house, with multiple spaces available to use in different ways.

Interiors designed by Champalimaud and built by ASR Interiors reinterpret the established concept of a European palazzo by combining traditional refinement with classical grandeur and contemporary aesthetics. Emphasised cores are juxtaposed with a delicate layering of elegant materials such as marble, gilded glass, bas-relief and terrazzo mosaics to create a sense of fluidity and movement. The project’s target market represents the true one per cent of the world’s most affluent. Therefore, its residences are typically acquired as a third or fourth vacation home by ‘global citizens’ who spend each year traversing the
world from property to property with their families or on business. V R is an awardwinning mixed-use development by Litman Architects. The 42,000m² project in Uruguay has been designed to enable all apartments to have views of the Crystal Lagoon as its name suggests. Crystal View comprises six blocks of modern five-storey buildings with garages below. The complex benefits from the exclusive use of two clubhouses with gyms, saunas, club changing rooms, playrooms and big solariums around indoor and outdoor pools with infinity-edges to the Crystal Lagoon. The surrounding landscape of its 12-hectare plot has also been carefully designed to harmonise with the environment. The project was designed around Solanas Crystal Beach – the world-renowned Crystal Lagoon patent – also designed by Litman Architects and opened in 2016. This stunning
resort is 400 metres from the ocean at Portezuelo Beach and only a few kilometres away from the world-famous Punta del Este. The project thus benefits from an environment of relaxation amidst spectacular woods as well as closeness to Uruguay’s beautiful Atlantic coast. This low-density complex was conceived in two stages to generate a gradual growth within the area, without affecting the microclimate of the development. Its contemporary buildings will combine an elegant, simple line architecture with traditional elements. The project is harmoniously incorporated within the Solanas Vacation Club which includes restaurants, a spa, tennis and football courts, heated pools and a Convention Centre. Crystal View therefore represents an inner neighbourhood, with its own ambiance and elegance, but which easily connects with Solanas Crystal Beach.

Bathroom Worth the View

, Rusk transforms apartments and townhouses at New York’s premier addresses. The company has won a trio of awards for the following stunning interior design projects. Bathroom Worth the View belongs to a client who bought two adjoining apartments in a tall needle building so that he could enjoy full 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline. The existing bathroom featured standard finishes, regular painted white walls, a dark alcove shower and a hanging mirror that blocked the view. Therefore, the brief was to change the layout to optimise both the magnificent view and increase the amount of natural daylight. Designed by plainspace Architecture and Design dpc and interior designer, Shari Pellows, the new bathroom provides exceptional views. A freestanding tub is now placed where
the original vanity stood and is raised on an attractive stone platform to conceal the piping and improve the view even more. Rusk used photographs of stones for the walls and floor to achieve matches and align the veining before cutting. This has ensured that the veining is continuous between all three planes at each corner. A slender mirror proves adequate to conceal views from the adjacent building, while integrated electronic roller shades provides additional privacy when required. The clients’ challenging brief for Naturally Lit Townhouse in Greenwich Village was to renovate the property as they were starting a family. Time was of the essence as an earlier bid to transform the property had been thwarted by a flood following Hurricane Sandy. bronze framed windows, two additional bedrooms, a kitchen and both a rooftop and rear garden. One of the prime considerations was to address the lack of light in the interior spaces – a common problem with townhouses in general. By cutting out the ceiling slab of the first floor and then detailing the new ceiling with a dramatic bevelled cut, light penetrates deeply into the interior. Furthermore, by placing all utility spaces in a central core that travels up through the house, light is able to wrap around the core and penetrate from front to back with no hallways or openings. In this minimalist interior, the stair was designed to be spectacular and the most remarkable feature of the house. Its final design called for a monolithic concrete stair featuring a sculpted underside that is a fascinating abstraction of the human spine.
House Colorful
The goal with House Colorful was to radiate a true family feel. The clients had already renovated one of two apartments that made up a floor of a Park Avenue building when the adjoining apartment became available. This combined apartment was to be a long-term home and so both apartments were gutted to incorporate spectacular finishes. With no two rooms having the same style or colour scheme, the project is a visual education in the decorative arts. Every space was carefully designed by architect John B Murray and interior designer Katie Ridder in close collaboration with the owners. The resulting living spaces seek to express the use and purpose of each room while delighting the family. While the home has the solidarity and history of classic architecture, it is filled to the brim with colour.

These regulate the amount of light allowed into each unit, much like the aperture of a camera. In summer when the sun is higher in the sky, the frames act as shades, keeping the home cool. Then, during the winter, the fames allow in direct sunlight and warmth. Due to the overall design of the development’s structure, an abundance of light is experienced both inside and out. Located in Oakridge, one of the last areas in Vancouver to be developed, Aperture is an artful enclave of six innovative buildings surrounding a tranquil courtyard garden. Although Oakridge retains its tree-lined streets, manicured gardens and expansive public parks, it is also conveniently close to Vancouver’s most illustrious mall, Oakridge Centre. with a unique campus-like massing. This steps down in scale from two, six-storey buildings on the busy arterial road down to stand-alone villas that are sensitive to the single-family neighbourhood to the north of the development. The project’s Asian-inspired landscape is rooted in nature and features wood and concrete paving, bamboo, river rocks and running water. Complementing these surroundings perfectly, Aperture’s exteriors are inspired by iconic images of stacked timber. Responding to the play of light, they create a subtly changing look depending on the season, time of day and weather. The design deftly pays homage to the area’s mid-century modernist heritage while adding a West Coast flavour. The complicity of the development’s structure presented a challenge as it required a sophisticated method of building from the base and upwards to every floor. The aperture-like designs that shape the external appearance and
are viewed from all sides of the buildings have different dimensions. This makes the external finishing work highly complex. With its unique angles, white and wood façade and extensive windows, this mid-rise tower is set to raise the bar on luxury and style in this rapidly growing part of the Vancouver real estate market. Spacious interiors feature the simple elegance of hardwood floors, wood veneer cabinetry and quartz countertops. Kitchens are equipped with exclusive refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers that blend seamlessly into the woodwork. Bathrooms feature Mirolin soaker tubs, marbleinspired tiling, elegant Grohe faucets and polished chrome hardware. Aperture is now a distinct landmark development in Vancouver. Its ongoing goals are to encourage community interaction through unique open spaces in a traditionally introverted, single-family neighbourhood and to gain LEED Gold certification.

destinations, experiences and memories created. A dedicated 12-seat minibus plus electric vehicle charging stations are provided on-site together with car parking and additional space for bicycles. Sculptural Residence in Calgary Canada, is the first of the studio’s two latest awardwinning projects. The overlying mandate from the client was ‘bring it to life, bring it to light’. Also, to remain unadorned and strongly architectural in spirit, exuding authenticity in material. The challenge was to provide a distinct separation between living, private and work spaces without conventional barriers.
The design solution is a layering of forms that flow intuitively, cleverly and artistically. Natural light and form was a key factor to all levels, offering functionality yet curious surprises at every turn. Spaces radiate from two spines of board-formed concrete that frame and embrace the spectacular views, blurring the lines between the interior and exterior. Left raw, the concrete provides a stunning backdrop to refined details. The modern geometry is complemented by natural materials and textures creating a profound sense of comfort. Gracious and sweeping but never cavernous, the floor plan delivers spaces that are intimate, comfortable and functional, focusing on efficiency with drama and clever detailing.

the fourth collaboration of CYD with Grassroots Restaurant Group, based on introducing sustainable, diverse and best in class dining experiences. The challenge was to transform the space within a 1912 heritage building to reflect the clients’ brand of authentic, casual, hip and somewhat edgy environments. A key challenge from the landlord was to maintain and not touch the existing grand restored interior envelope. The overall, award-winning design concept was conceived from the notion of ‘juxtaposition’. The idea of industrial scaffolding emerged; raw steel against refinement, casual against formal. The theatrical aspect of cooking evolved into the concept of modularity and flexibility.
The solution was a series of steel framework structures floating within the space. Raw yet calculated, the framework functions as a support structure for detail and remains detached from the architecture. Each module has purpose, whether functional, artistic or purely aesthetic. The structures resolve the division of space, creating areas of diversity while highlighting the stunning envelope. Towers are pods for storage and shelving, while connecting bulkheads serve as overscale light fixtures. Custom furniture grounds the space yet moves effortlessly to transform the functionality and level of intimacy. The layering of textural materials takes cues from the building era such as steel construction, reeded glass, wood paneling, vintage mirrors and luscious fabrics, creating a nostalgic undertone to an otherwise edgy concept.

The Grand Residences at River Rim, are family homes located in a residential development on a canyon rim overlooking the Teton River in Teton County, Idaho. The uniqueness of this project is that in most developments homes are typically designed on large plots of land creating distance and isolation. Here, Yellowstone Architects has clustered multi-million dollar homes around a beautiful community centre, The Overlook Lodge, and then surrounded them with over
900 acres of dedicated agricultural open space in perpetuity (never to be developed). This has fostered a tight-knit community of people who prioritise and protect their natural environment. The project has already won design awards for its integration with the surrounding landscape and minimal environmental footprint. The Grand Residences and Overlook Lodge are used primarily by homeowners as second homes, but also offer the opportunity to provide high-end overnight accommodations. These homes incorporate natural earth-tone materials, interesting roof lines and indigenous rock masonry. They are designed to portray the authentic farm and ranch architectural vocabulary of the Intermountain West and the buildings are carefully contoured to harmonise with the land.

M H is a new hotel in Punta del Este, Uruguay, designed by Guevara Ottonello Architects. The firm is an interdisciplinary architectural and interior design studio that has designed projects on every scale, including residential, commercial, hospitality, interior design and master planning varieties. Singularity and uniqueness are the main concepts that have guided the design of Don Majestic Hotel, as the creation of an architectural icon was the main objective. The hotel, with its 52 rooms, has spacious, luxurious and elegantly designed interiors and offers special services and amenities, including a gourmet restaurant, outdoor and indoor heated pools, a fitness centre, conference room, working areas, flexible meeting spaces,
concierge services, valet parking and spa services, as well as a solarium area to enjoy the green landscape that surrounds the building. Each interior element including furniture has been chosen with the same concept that has guided the architectural design of the hotel; with curves and a very pure, simple but elegant and singular design. For the interior design of the rooms, the main aspect is the overall view, coupled with light and transparency, which are crucial attributes – they are part of the essence and the identity of the project. The hotel has 360 degrees of floor-to-ceiling curved glass, which allow residents to have incredible views of Punta del Este. This approach maximises the sense of connection between the guests and the external landscape.

The company’s Hilton Hotel construction is located near the corporate and financial district of Guadalajara, Mexico. It features exciting, modern décor and amenities to appeal to the discerning traveller. The luxurious king and double-bedded suite in particular allow guests to enjoy amazing panoramic views, extra space, a separate living area, and complimentary access to the Executive Lounge, while enjoying upgraded amenities. Conceptualised by architect Cesar Pelli, Mitikah Torre Residencial high-rise development is part of a 1,000,000m² master plan, which includes a 267-metre residential
building with an office, retail and entertainment area. The project is the tallest building in Mexico City, where aeronautical as well as zoning permits were an important hurdle to overcome, as no precedent exists for a tower of these dimensions. Situated across 64 storeys, there are 660 apartments in total, with all units having the privilege of spectacular views over Mexico City. Midtown Jalisco mixed-use architectural project establishes itself in Guadalajara as a design that will furnish Mexico City with new commercial and entertainment spaces, together with a significant hotel and office provision. Respect for the existing vegetation and urban integration were guidelines that served to define the positioning of the development. The threestorey area includes restaurants, bars, boutiques, cinemas and a supermarket and is a welcome addition to this blossoming city.

With offices in South Florida and the Cayman Islands, the company’s projects range from commercial, hospitality, and multi-family developments to private multi-million-dollar homes. For Rost Residence, Trio Architecture implemented its client’s vision seamlessly. A devoted kite surfer, John Rost’s love of the wind, water, flora, white sandy beaches and blue skies had to be directly linked to the home’s interior spaces. Located about 45 minutes from downtown George Town, Rost Residence finds its home at the East End of Grand Cayman, next to Kite Beach. Originally intended to be a vacation home, John’s list of requirements included an independent structure comprising of a
four-car garage, and a guest apartment with a small living room and kitchen. For the ground level of the main building, he wanted a great room with a large kitchen, dining and living area, ample outdoor decking, and three guest bedrooms. For the upper level, a master suite with a separate office. All these areas needed to be harmoniously enveloped in a modern structure designed to echo its surrounding beauty. The design of the house maintains a modern aesthetic yet honours the natural surrounding elements with the use of generous glazing. The stone cladding references the colour of the sand, while the white stucco and dark bronze accents pay homage to the traditional colour schemes found around the island. With Rost Residence, Trio Architecture has created a unique place where each space is designed to awaken the senses.

Environmentally aware, their aim is to make the best use of renewable and recycled resources, giving favour to material such as sustainably sourced wood. In fact, they have gone so far as to help with the reforestation of parts of the Brazilian rainforest to protect this natural habitat for generations to come. Casa Americana is located in São Paulo State. The villa sits on the very edge of the urbanised area, overlooking green fields. The building is designed not only to make the most of these views, but also to reduce energy consumption, utilise renewable energy,
sustainable building materials and innovative technology. The design ethos for this project was to embrace and make the most of the natural surroundings offered by the location and provide the residents with an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The large windows of the main living area look out onto a grassy courtyard with a beautiful panoramic view from the garden. Inside, the private areas each look out onto their own courtyard garden, offering not only a view of lush vegetation but providing dappled shade and a natural feel. High ceilings make the rooms airy and are bathed in light. Garden roofs overhang the main buildings, providing shade and a contrast in materials from the main concrete structure to areas finished in wood.

She curated a powerhouse team of Cook Architectural Design Studio, Legacy Custom Homes, and Lauren Coburn LLC to collaborate with the clients on creating the perfect vision for their home. Together, they decided on a Mediterranean-style aesthetic for the exterior with a bright and airy interior, highlighted clean lines, and sunlight flowing in from every direction. Massively-scaled
moldings were used to fit the proportions of the home and multiple giant daybeds were incorporated throughout, for lounging and enjoying time together. Lauren was commissioned by her client to create the beautiful Glen Ellyn Estate project. The client wanted to transform their traditional estate’s dark and heavy interior into a coastalesque, light-filled haven. The over scaled, French-inspired furniture pieces – most of which Lauren custom designed – pay homage to the grand proportions of the home, and gave the client unique pieces that fit his tastes, passion for overseas travel, and his personal vision. Given the fact that three young children and two dogs also call this place home, Lauren used practical, yet beautiful, stain-resistant fabrics throughout.

company Holocene was founded just five years ago by Aude Gros-Rosanvallon. In that short time, Aude has worked on a large variety of projects from private villas to mountain chalets, landscape design, restaurants and beach clubs both in Europe and America. Tuscy is situated on a three acre Californian plot of land, surrounded by high redwoods and valley oaks. This immaculately designed residential interior is the result of a three year collaboration between the USA and France, resulting in a Californian sized house with a distinctly European flavour The land was purchased in 2016, French architect PPF Goujon Studio worked on the building, while Holocene were responsible for the interiors – from partition wall,
staircase, bathrooms, kitchen and dressings design to furniture choices and decoration. Much inspiration was drawn from the owner, whose design concepts are deeply rooted in a curiosity and enthusiasm for Europe and France. It was to be a project of layers. The client was focused on circulations and gentle curves, maximum openness and enjoying large views towards the garden. It was to carry a simple yet elegantly refined palette – beige stone and marble, bronze and cherry wood. And most of all it was to be a celebration of artisanal crafts. As many elements as possible have been commissioned and handcrafted specifically for the property. From the sculptural, ribbon like staircase to the very last drawer, each part of the project has been explored, discussed, implemented and refined.

D T A. was tasked with designing this beautiful residential proaperty within the grounds of the Terravista development in Argentina. The clients requested a modern design with an open concept, alongside a large and spacious outdoor place to meet with friends and family. Materiality, warmth and movement are three words that perfectly define this single-family home, for which the search for harmony in its lines and balance in the use of its materials represented a great challenge. Known as Padovan’s House, the design needed to enable the owners to interact with nature. The more than 40 hectares of green and common spaces within Terravista, along with the central park with its lagoons and sports spaces created the perfect atmosphere to accomplish this.
In addition, the use of pure lines allowed for a minimalistic aura which resulted in the owners being able to fully appreciate and enjoy the abode in its entirety. The interior is enveloped in pure white with touches of colour to create an exceptional space. The use of integrated environments enhanced the relationship with the outside, while comfort remained constant with the implementation of a central air conditioning and heating equipment. The signature bathrooms were designed with state-of-the-art coverings, toilets and taps. The kitchen/dining room opens into the living room and, through glazed doors, to the gallery and to the back garden, creating an environment that from a visual point of view has no limits, while the bedrooms are enveloped in white carpentry with hermetic double glazing, porcelain floors, plaster ceilings and luminaires embedded in them.

T A was given a specific challenge to design an extraordinary house positioned on a peninsula in order to capture multiple panoramic views. This unique 11,000 sq. ft. custom home design has six large bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, and is a three-storey one-of-a-kind house. The Scottish-born Caymanian client wanted to have a comfortable living space for his growing family while incorporating both European and Caribbean design aspects. The interior space planning resembles that of a modern style castle with its high walls and columns, grand passageways and surprising stair systems. Far from being a traditional Caymanian cottage, Chersonese utilises large roof overhangs, maximises outdoor living space, and provides a view to the expansive lap pool with
double negative water edge, a 12-person jacuzzi and island planter with palm tree floating in the centre from most rooms in the house. The open kitchen and family room are located with direct access to the pool with views to a bamboo garden, the water and many palm trees along the water’s edge. The living and dining rooms give the house more of a traditional feel yet simultaneously takes full advantage of the open-plan living space. On the second floor, a long corridor connects each of the five bedrooms on multi levels. A sixth self-contained guest bedroom, is located above the parallelogram shaped three-car garage. Finally, the third floor, which houses an office and private gym, gives the owner direct east and west views from one end of the island to the other allowing full enjoyment of the magnificent sunrises and sunsets every day.

It was conceived in 2005 by the McCauley family from the UK to be a high-end, mixed-use addition to the Jolly Harbour area of Antigua. It has a far-reaching, 360-degree vista of pristine forested gullies, rolling landscape, picturesque villages and over the turquoise Caribbean Sea and palm-lined beaches to Five Islands Bay. The mixed residential, commercial and hotel development has been master-planned by leading Caribbean architect, OBM, to allow its residents privacy, tranquillity and a wide range of on-site, five-star facilities. These include Carmichael’s fine dining restaurant, Sugar Club restaurant and lounge, Aveda Concept Spa, fully equipped Cybex gym and The Shed yoga pavilion. Round the clock security within
this gated community ensures that residents’ homes, families and guests will be safe and undisturbed. Sugar Ridge has five retail units which house a boutique, real estate sales office and car rental operation, while a conference facility and hotel reception flank the car park for 30 vehicles. Behind the reception lie the development’s 60 hotel rooms nestled into the hillside in groups of four. H first seen by Aidan McCauley in 2004 when his family moved to Antigua prior to developing Sugar Ridge. He was so inspired by the property that one of the resort’s model homes was based directly on this house. Ten years later when looking to move to English Harbour, Aidan was astonished to find Mollihawk was on the market. The entire site comprised two adjoining plots totalling just over an acre on flat land at the top of a hill. Although the plots connected, they had been developed independently of each other. A poorly designed and constructed cottage at the back of the main house was demolished but the main house, although run down and needing extensive renovation, was retained. Built in
1963, its walls used historic stones from the then derelict Georgian Nelson’s Dockyard which it overlooks. This traditional art of stone masonry in Antigua was upheld during the property’s renovation as a team of masons, previously engaged in the restoration of Clarence House in London, were employed for 14 months. The challenge was to re-purpose the space and to enclose it all to create a safe and secure home with a single front door. Some areas were completely rebuilt; walls were cut and new, larger windows were fitted throughout to maximise natural light and optimise the fabulous views. After three years, the property is now a beautiful three-bedroom family home with an additional one-bedroom private annexe, two-bedroom loft and onebedroom gatehouse.

S P, Brazil, Aurinova specialises in developing residential and commercial projects of a consistently high standard. The company focuses on combining architecture, sophisticated design, sustainability and security throughout its customised projects for an exclusive audience. Quartier Auri is a bold, stylish and elegant award-winning project that called for a spectacular design. Aurinova’s initial challenge was finding a solution that would stand out from the rest; one that was not bound to a specific architect’s trademark work or to any given country or continent. A further significant challenge was to bring together various contemporary and historical architectural styles into a harmonious and
singular project that would exceed current urban standards. It was also to serve as a blueprint for Aurinova’s future construction. Consisting of just 66 apartments of three different sizes (equating to only 13% of the 8,240m² site), the remaining 87% has been used for recreational space and green areas. This extremely low density is practically unheard of in the city of São Paulo and uses just half of the legally permitted building area. Everything from the European-style bay windows in some of the master bedrooms to the striking Romanesque ground floor pillars; the English-style wrought-iron gates to the penthouse apartments with their art deco touches in the façade, every last detail was examined at length before being incorporated into the Quartier Auri project.

IBRIAN A a Mexican firm with extensive experience in contemporary design, construction and interiors ranging from residential projects to commercial buildings and high-rise towers. It has won an impressive four awards for the following two projects. The client for Casa Vista Diamante was the architect Fernando Cibrian himself, founder of the company. He wanted a home that would represent all his wishes and aspirations, allowing a total escape from the outside world. The architectural design and interiors were projected together, creating a harmonious space. A massive, five-storey home built in between cliffs more than 20 metres deep, the property has fabulous views towards two volcanoes and the lush green golf
course. Each floor is dedicated to a specific use and a personal elevator makes the entire building easily accessible. Featuring exquisite finishes throughout as well as an admirable art collection, this home truly has it all. Casa Valencia was commissioned by Pueblas State University to create a property for its annual raffle to raise funds for its students. The challenging brief was to build and fully furnish a home located in Puebla, Mexico suited to family use within a time period of just four months. Balancing functionality and good aesthetics, Cibrian’s architectural design features large interconnecting shapes to create volume play on the property’s corner plot. Nordic style interiors featuring different wood tones blend beautifully with neutral colour palettes to form a stylish family home that can be enjoyed by anyone.

, Appel Design Group (ADG) has continued to grow in size as well as the ability to take on larger and more challenging architectural design projects. Its principals and staff encourage a well-planned and interactive design process with the project design team, striving to exceed the expectations of clients. ADG Architects is very proud of Fifty 58, a newly constructed mixed-use building in Paramus, New Jersey. The project comprises 45 open-concept luxury apartments, including 18 spacious multi-storey units. Privacy for the residents is maintained by separating all of the residential units above a ground floor podium level shared by retail and restaurant uses as well as covered parking for the residents. Residential tenants have access to life-style amenities such as a gym, community rooms
and a rooftop terrace complete with grills and a firepit. ADG’s architectural design challenged the zoning regulations, creating the potential for larger and multi-storey units. This enabled the building to adopt a more luxurious and exclusive feel with volume ceilings, expansive windows, high-end finishes and impressive communal amenity spaces for residents. The focus was to create a distinct and luxurious building that would complement the high expectations of the local Bergen County residents. The project team favoured a contemporary style with open floor plans, expansive glass and open-air balconies to cater to both young professionals and active adults. Complete with a hip urban vibe, the design met the challenge of the client’s ambitious vision, responsibly developing a compact and complex site.

Vista Point, an award-winning project by Dean Thomas within the inner city of Calgary, combines the clients’ differing preferences of architectural styles. By balancing traditional materials with strong horizontal forms, the design blends the simplicity and openness of contemporary design with the comfort and elegance of tradition. The concept of the floorplan design was influenced by several key factors from the
clients’ main requirements list; a bright home that maximized the lot and its views, a winged design to keep the bedrooms separate from the entertaining areas and a four-car garage in which the bays did not dominate the front elevation of the home. Situated on one of the most spectacular lots within Calgary, the design capitalises on the astounding city and valley views from every angle off the rear. To match the shape of the lot, and to maximize the rear width, the design was dialled five degrees outward, allowing each room to capitalise on the vistas it offered. Tall ceilings and large oversized windows open up the home, harmonising the residence with the surrounding landscape.

the University of São Paulo’s School of Architecture and Urbanism, Fernanda Marques creates contemporary interiors that reflect the best of the world’s art and design. The two following award-winning projects in São Paulo are prime examples. Groenlandia is a 740m² residence constructed around 1950 that has undergone a stunning retrofit led by Fernanda Marques. The project required a number of structural alterations in order to meet the growing requirements of the clients, a couple and their three children. Living spaces were optimised to enable the family’s many guests and enhanced by the use of a soft colour palette, natural materials and an abundance of lighting solutions. A new gourmet
area was created by moving the pool area to one side of the house, while ground floor openings were enlarged to form a better integration between the internal and external areas. Panorama was designed for a keen art collector and his wife and so the main goal was to house all the works of art harmoniously, allowing for the collection’s future growth. The owner also had an aspiration to include a swimming pool in the apartment. Building the pool presented the biggest challenge as Fernanda Marques decided to place it in pride of place in the living room. Thick glass was imported and specialised labour required to install the pool which has ultimately become yet another work of art within this superb two floor apartment.

Inspired by the elements of nature such as earth, stone and wood, her award-winning project, Guest Space, is a 218m² building of metal construction in São Paulo. Dedicated to relaxation, it is perfect for gathering family and friends together. Guests are welcomed by a charming tropical garden square with a pair of hanging rope swings and potted jaboticaba trees to complement the overall relaxing atmosphere. Due to three large, fully glazed sliding doors, the living room with its fireplace and the gourmet kitchen are beautifully connected to the garden. Porcelain tiles adorn the floor, while other natural materials such as stone and brick bring a harmonic balance of nuances and textures present on surfaces and furniture. This palette has been intentionally selected in order to make the most of the client’s various works of art including sculptures and photographs by well-known artists. Acoustic comfort was a key concern due to the building’s 4.30 metre-high ceilings. Thus, an exclusive designer rug has been suspended between the walls to act as both an attractive tapestry and sound absorption element. Completing the project perfectly, lighting brings together external beacons and built-in dots creating a striking, contrasting effect.

, TigerQi Architecture specialises in a contemporary design approach which embraces the simplicity and minimalism of modern design, but which respects and relates to the regional context and built-environment traditions of the Caribbean. The company was commissioned to repair and remodel the Brandywine Estate Restaurant in the British Virgin Islands which was badly damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Its brief was to rebuild a stronger, more functional and resilient space while enhancing the ‘shabby-chic’ charm of the original establishment. A key consideration, which became a major challenge, was creating a roof to cover the previously open terrace. The owner favoured a dramatic, high-peaked, round roof focused

around a bar or another central feature. Using heavy rustic timbers, an asymmetrical, leaf-shaped roof structure, reminiscent of an Elephant Ear leaf, was created. This echoes the floor plan of the terrace but is segmented rather than curved for ease of construction. The resulting roof visually levitates while being supported by massive buttress columns clad in stone. This has helped to create a heavier, more masculine feel to balance and ground the airiness of the roof structure. The restaurant is in the same area as the Brandywine Estate Bayside Residences, a previous award-winning project from 2018 also designed by Tiger Qi Architecture. This luxury waterfront townhouse development is currently under construction and comprises 10 three-bedroom, three bathroom properties.

A trip to South Carolina will reveal ‘The Lantern – A Beacon of Light’ property, which was built after a tragic fire destroyed the previous owner’s home. After friends and family visited and helped the couple salvage a few of their belongings, the favour was returned in the form of a lantern as a symbol of their gratitude, hence the property’s name. The builders utilized the lantern as a primary element of the architectural feature.

Emerald City, Seattle houses the Miller Interior Design studio with a number of beautifully designed commercial, residential and architectural projects under its belt. The company has won a Bathroom Design award for its Sparkling Spa master bathroom remodelling project. Keith Miller was given the task of making considerable changes to his clients’ outdated bathroom as they journeyed towards transforming a secondary home into a primary family residence. The end result was a marrying of individual style, modern aesthetics and attention to detail without compromising on luxury.
To begin with, the true beauty of the shower room was masked with low-quality, outdated fixtures and furnishings. Storage was uncomfortable to access owing to the awkward corner vanity and there was a lack of ventilation due to poor planning. However, the one redeeming quality is the large window showcasing the beautiful Pacific Northwest view. A stroll into the renovated bathroom reveals cleaner architectural lines, opening up of enclosed spaces, high-quality fixtures, a customised Moroccan-style rug for visual interest, a frameless shower and the star of the show; a luxury freestanding tub transforming a mundane morning ritual into an appealing bathing experience.

N C I specialises in kitchen and bath redesign to create fresh and contemporary spaces. As an awardwinner, the company focuses on vision, specific requirements and the desires of its clients. For this particular master bath project, the clients wanted a luxurious space for complete relaxation. Customised designs tailored to their daily activities were required, including grooming facilities, a beverage centre and cabinetry with smart integrated storage. A steam shower with chromotherapy, aromatherapy, and ergonomic seating was a must, not only for sheer pleasure but for health benefits, too. There was also a need for an adjoining shower with high-quality plumbing fixtures, which
was as a direct result of the clients sharing a love for health and wellness properties. Custom cabinetry featured trash pull-outs, along with internal drawers and a grooming appliance storage cabinet. The original closet was completely demolished, giving new life to a custom closet with an island and integrated shoe pull-out storage. A coffee bar with integrated sink, beverage centre and a pull-out k-cup holder helps the clients start off their day without ever leaving their master retreat. The bathroom features sleek sculptural lines and minimal aesthetic with neutral backgrounds. The ceiling cove was transformed into a rectangular shape and custom fabricated curved metal lights with cut-outs extended across the cove, casting light patterns below.

M, Uribe + Arquitectos creates architecture that infuses Mexican cultural elements with a new meaning, elevating them to a universal plane. Its work is characterised by exploring clients’ needs and transforming them into projects that merge design and technology. The company has won three awards relating to the following projects. Klein Residence is located in an exclusive residential area and has spectacular views of the valley of Mexico City. The client’s requirements included four bedrooms, private family space, an open concept kitchen and generous social spaces for entertaining. A six-car underground garage, gym and service quarters were also included in the brief. The heart of the house is the terrace as it is used all year round and even houses some
of the surrounding oak trees. Indeed, the principal inspiration of the overall design was the oak trees which make the house feel immersed in nature. Moran Apartment is a penthouse owned by a mature couple with unique requirements that influenced Uribe’s final design. Their extensive art collection was one of the main focus points throughout the property as well as maximising the impressive Mexico City views. One of the clients also has tunnel vision so high contrast colours and lighting was vital for safe navigation of the apartment. A major highlight of the interior design is the living room which has been designed around a painting by the renowned Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros.

D A and Interior Design studio offers a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of its design process. The company’s philosophy is to create aesthetically-stunning design solutions in close collaboration with its customers, combining modern with retro or classic with abstract. Its award-winning apartment is located in the Ocean Drive condominium in Bal Harbour, Florida – on the northern part of Miami Beach. The client’s design brief was to mix the glamour of a high-end hotel room with the comfort and practicality of a home away from home. The company opted for floor-to-ceiling glass walls to optimise the 10-foot ceilings and the
elevated views. It wanted to create a floating, transparent effect – making the actual interior of the apartment a background to the stunning views and gardens outside. This was also the reason natural materials were used, such as marble, wood and stone alongside light grey tones with only a splash of colour, such as orange in the living room to support the sunset colours present in the landscape. The design also played on the magic and illusion of mirrored walls to evoke a variety of atmospheres for each room and bring the blue hue of the ocean indoors. It used large textures to give smaller spaces huge personality, such as the use of a white marble panel to make a monochromatic living room look sharp and clean.

Its local JV partner, OR-B DEVELOPMENTS, is a successful real estate developer in Mexico with experience in the architecture, development and construction coordination of complex mixed-use projects. Working together and in close collaboration with the design team from Handel Architects, the award-winning project Capital Central will become a reference mixeduse building that will redefine a neglected downtown neighbourhood in Mexico City. The JV development provides condos for sale, residential rentals and office and retail leasing space. Due to the neighbourhood architectural and cultural importance, the building needed to relate in size and materials
to both the colonial historic structures of the 17th and 18th centuries. It also had to give a nod to the modern amenities and constructions of present-day living, such as mirrored glass tower blocks and the many artisan and food markets that dot the area. Inspiration came from the principles and styles that drove the Baroque movement, such as colonnades and domes. The gridwork patterning of local stained glass by Tiffany in New York was a further inspiration. The condo tower is made up of two towers, of 14 and 18 stories. It has different amenities such as a kids’ area, pool and deck, barbecue area, library room and games area designed to meet the needs of young professionals and families. The corporate space totals 9,680m² attracting health, retail, education and government related tenants. Retail space amounts to 26,000m² and mixes retail, entertainment, food and beverage offerings.

The retail space was configured and designed by Ariana Jurado, Cecilia Corral, Andres Jurado, and Función Arquitectura, to incorporate an occupancy of 16 people at any one time, and also includes within it a private brewing area. Here customers can watch and experience how Tian Té brews, blends and offers up its own specialities of tea. The first architectural innovation was a parametric design with cubes that allowed a focus point for the exhibition of bespoke, handcrafted pottery. It also constructed a floating curve around the main centre steel
column, in order to connect the furniture from the private and public areas. Located in the state of Morelos in Mexico in the residential area of Lomas de Cocoyoc, the company wanted to celebrate all the ancestral traditions and fascinating stories that come together around the culture of tea drinking. Over the course of five years, Tian Té visited tea plantations all over the world looking for and collecting the best tea leaves and shrub shoots. Tian Té makes a big effort to share tea culture by combining traditional and modern brewing methods, generating a unique experience for its consumers. It even has a tea club so members can join to receive monthly teaspiration!
