From the Editors... I’m not sure what it is about Spring that makes us want to ‘nest’. From a simple spring-clean to a full-on renovation, replacing a couple of worn pieces or a spot of painting and redecorating to even building a brand new home, there’s something about the warmer days and sweet scent of blossoms in the air that seems to bring forth our inner weekend-warrior! This month, our 14-page Spring Home & Lifestyle Feature focuses on some of the local businesses that are there to help us achieve our home improvement goals – so set aside some time to make some plans and get planning! The Civic Theatre’s official 2019 program is preparing to draw to a close in November. Before then, however, audiences still have a number of opportunities to experience shows that typify the variety on offer each year at the Civic Theatre, and in this issue, we find out more about a few such shows, in particular, Circa’s Peepshow. Since its formation in 2004, Circa Contemporary Circus has toured the world with its ensemble of exceptional, multiskilled circus artists, performing in 40 countries across six continents to over one million people. Ahead of this month’s show, we caught up with performer Jessica Connell who has been a Circus performer since she was a young teenager, about what audiences can expect. As the weather warms up so will your social life, and in this issue, we look at some of the varied events that are on offer both around Newcastle and further up the expressway into Wine Country. The Carnival of Colour at Hunter Valley Gardens promises to be a visual and sensual delight with three events throughout spring offering something for all ages while the Newcastle Stitches and Craft Show will have crafters immersed in demonstrations, classes and new products. The End2End Festival in Pokolbin will get you dancing to cover-bands featuring acts such as ABBA, INXS, Pink and U2 while enjoying all the best local produce the area has to offer. 'Walk With Us' Lifeline World Suicide Prevention Day Walk Tuesday, 10th September Lifeline Hunter Central Coast hosts this event each September to provide an opportunity for our local community to discuss suicide prevention openly and respectfully. As saddening and serious as this topic is to talk about, understanding when, how, why and who should talk about suicide allows for appropriate discussions and for people to learn how to keep a loved one safe. Join Lifeline at Dixon Park Beach Surf Club for a gentle yet awarenessraising walk to Merewether Baths and back, at 5.30am for a 6am start. Formalities, a bbq breakfast and community stalls will follow until approximately 8.30am. Registration is free, and donations are welcomed via www.stickytickets.com.au (just search the event name). Businesses are encouraged to get behind this great cause!

China Week Cultural Festival 2019 Saturday, 7th September Presented by the Confucius Institute and the University of Newcastle, China Week will once again hold its free Cultural Festival to celebrate contemporary and traditional Chinese culture with food, art, lion and dragon dances with interactive displays, markets, wine tasting and demonstrations. The French Baroque sensations from Nevermind kick off their national Musica Viva tour in Newcastle on 10 October. Maxim Boon discovers what all the fuss is about. At a glance, the members of Nevermind could easily be mistaken for some achingly trendy indie band. Bearded, longhaired, roguishly stylish; this edgy quartet radiates the kind of hipster chic you’d expect from the next big chart-toppers. However, appearances can be deceiving – in reality, they’re musical talents of a very different kind. This French foursome – Jean Rondeau (harpsichord), Anne Besson (flute), Louis Creac’h (violin) and Robin Pharo (viola da gamba) – are less about rock-n-roll and more about Baroque (no roll required).

Nevermind formed six years ago, when four friends, students of the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris at the time, casually got together to play some 18th-century chamber works. From these humble beginnings, the group has steadily risen through the ranks of Europe’s early music elite, earning a reputation as a breath of fresh air in what can often be a stuffy niche of the classical world. The vocabulary used to describe Nevermind’s refreshing brand of unbuttoned Baroque has often focused on their most unconventional qualities; their youth, their relaxed demeanours, the way their concerts are “rewriting the rulebook” of what early music can be. But it is, perhaps, ironic that by defying the period music stereotypes, Nevermind has ended up pigeonholed as the enfant terrible of historically informed performance. “There is a dichotomy in the way we are spoken about and the way we see ourselves. We are just us; there is no stylist, no strategy,” Besson says. “But we do hope we can bring more people, a different kind of audience, to the concert hall,” Pharo continues. “We really wanted to open up Baroque music and even classical music in general to younger people. So we prefer the atmosphere of our concerts to be very relaxed – we don’t wear formal clothes or all-black like many traditional groups do.” While Nevermind’s style may be a selling point, with the added bonus of attracting new audiences, it isn’t without significant substance. Beneath the laidback vibe and disarming image is a musical vision of remarkable sophistication. As showcased on Nevermind’s two albums – their 2016 debut disc Conversations, featuring little-known masterworks by Quentin and Guillemain, followed in 2017

by a superb rendering of Telemann’s often neglected Paris Quartets – rigorous period technique is the bedrock of their music-making. But this is tempered by a surprisingly flexible musicality that teems with a degree of individual flair that isn’t commonly found in historical performance. “We’ve really built something together – we’ve been playing together now for almost six years – so we know exactly what each other’s capabilities are, what is possible, who can do this or that. We understand each other so intimately,” Besson says of Nevermind’s dynamic sense of ensemble. While remaining reverent to the Baroque pedigree of the repertoire, the members of Nevermind are more than period specialists. These proud musical omnivores also bring other experiences to bear on their interpretations. In addition to her skills on the traverso (the Baroque flute), Besson also studied the modern orchestral flute as well as the Irish flute, a folk music staple. Jean Rondeau is a talented jazz improviser as well as an award-winning harpsichordist. Hints of these seemingly remote styles – jazz, folk, contemporary – add an additional layer of textural depth to their performances, Besson explains. “Musically we want our conversation – the conversation that takes place between four musicians – to really connect. Baroque music is about convincing people.” “Music from the 19th century onwards is maybe more picturesque, more illustrative in its nature. But in the music of the Baroque, you need to speak with your instrument,” Pharo adds. “It truly is a conversation. Children often dream of running away to the circus. But that fantasy actually became a reality for Jessica Connell at the age of 14 when she joined the renowned Flying Fruit Fly Circus, one of the world’s leading performing arts companies for youth aged eight to 18. For Jessica, it wasn’t so much a case of running away (the circus is based in her hometown of Albury Wodonga) as finding her purpose – a purpose which she has been pursuing for the past 14 years in circus productions across Australia and around the world.

“I was a very creative child and with the aid of all of my siblings (there’s seven in my family), we were always making plays and dancing,” she said. “And then when I was about 14, I was lucky that my family moved back to Albury-Wodonga, where the Flying Fruit Fly Circus is based. “My dad knew about the circus already, he had played a large part in its creation 40 years ago, and he just saw in me that I kind of needed something like that … something that was creative, physical.

“The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is very professional, so I was very lucky that they took me on board. The training was full on from day one, I trained five days a week, and we’d go on tours for up to a month or two months, with our (school) teachers coming on the road. “I was always energetic and creative and physical and looking for something. It gave me purpose, which is probably why I fell in love with it so quickly. “And it gives you a sense of community that I still experience now in this troupe I’m working with. They’re your family as well as your work colleagues. You go through a lot together. So it’s very special, and I think even if I stopped in the next five, ten years, this world will always be a part of me, because of the community it creates.” Aside from learning the ropes with the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, where she specialised in hula hoops and aerials, Jessica also completed a Diploma in circus arts at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) in Melbourne. In 2011, Jessica landed a full-time contract with Circa Contemporary Circus, a Brisbane-based performance company at the forefront of the new wave of contemporary Australian circus. Circa itself was formed in 2004 and has toured the world with its ensemble of exceptional, multi-skilled circus artists, performing in 40 countries across six continents to over one million people. For the then 19-year-old, it was a dream come true. “I had seen Circa perform (over the years) and I just loved their work. They could express something that I didn’t fully understand and couldn’t communicate in words, but there was something special, for me, in what they did. There was a very human connection from the artists. “I also loved the fact that they did a little bit of everything because, at that time in my training, that's how I was training. I was doing a little bit of everything and loving everything. “So I think from a young age that company was something I aspired to and then I was lucky enough at 19 to get a fulltime contract, and I have been there for almost nine years now. “I love my job, and I feel so lucky to have it. I get to travel; I get to perform, I get to create. It's also quite demanding, and I don't think I could ever have imagined (as a 14-year-old) what it would actually entail, but ultimately I feel very lucky to be doing this.” Performing with Circa has taken Jessica all over the world to places including London, Berlin and South America.

This month it will also see her travel to Newcastle, with Circa set to bring its critically acclaimed production, Peepshow, to the Civic Theatre for one special night of acrobatic entertainment on Friday, September 13. Touted by one UK critic as “one of the most entertaining, unbelievable things you will ever see”, Peepshow takes audiences on a journey to “see the world from the other side of the mirror”. Circa’s Peepshow literally turns cabaret on its head, with a seductive dance through the hall of mirrors that is your imagination as the show lurches from the thrillingly acrobatic to the comically playful. Combining some of the finest acrobatic talents on the planet under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Peepshow creates a playfully exhilarating ride into the beautifully bizarre recesses of your mind. “This show was created about a year ago now by Circa, and it’s an ensemble,” Jessica said. “We’re seven acrobats, and we created the show with Yaron Lifschitz and Olivia McDonald, our associate director. “The idea behind the show was about being seen and seeing, and if you’re being watched, how does that affect what you wear, how you move, how you talk and how other people see you. “The show was created in two parts. The first part is kind of, in our own way, almost a German cabaret, and then the second part we take it into a new world, almost like a nightclub. Most of the acts were made with this inspiration, with this idea behind them of these two halves and these two concepts.

Jessica’s specialist hula-hooping skills make an appearance of course, with the ensemble coming together for both group manoeuvres and individual acts. “We’re an ensemble of seven, and we work very heavily together, which is one of the things I love about both this show and this company,” she said. “We work heavily in acrobatics together, so we all do a little bit of group acrobatics, whether that be building towers or pyramids, or doing an act we call ‘toss the girl’, which is a release acrobatic act. “But then we also support one another. In our solo acts, we’ve worked very hard to integrate other people. For instance, I do hula hoops, but the whole ensemble is often on stage with me within my hula hoop act. Billie WilsonCoffey also does tissue (aerial acrobatics), and the ensemble supports her in that act as well. And then there’s all sorts of things, cigar box juggling, aerial hoops, cord or rope. “I think often our work is quite abstract. We don’t try to tell a story. Instead, we try to convey an idea, an emotion, and we let the audience perceive this idea and take what they want from it.” The way the members of Circa’s ensemble cast convey those ideas is quite spectacular indeed, complete with teetering towers of balanced bodies, extreme bending and devilishly precarious aerials.

VARIETY AT CIVIC THEATRE In the next few months alone there’s everything from classic Shakespearean theatre to a hilarious comedy roadshow, as well as a play about the scandalous and surreal life of Salvador Dali. Earlier in the year, the historic Newcastle theatre played host to a range of different genres and styles, from the sounds of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to the songs and stories of Australia’s indigenous peoples, as well the frighteningly funny and seriously silly Revolting Rhymes originally dreamed up by much-loved children’s author Roald Dahl. In the forward to the official Season 2019 brochure, Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said this year’s program was designed “to entertain, challenge and inspire”. “Season 2019 offers works to entertain, challenge and inspire you, with a compelling mixture of dance, drama, comedy, physical theatre, puppetry, cabaret and storytelling on offer,” she said in the program. “The Newcastle community embraces and thrives upon the arts in all forms and Civic Theatre takes great pride and pleasure in providing audiences with access to high-quality travelling and local productions.” Civic Theatre Manager Leonie Wallace said incorporating a wide mix of performances into the schedule each season ensured it would appeal to as many people as possible.

“The main objective of any season is to bring people of all ages, background and experiences together and to curate a season that is socially and culturally relevant.” “In 2019, we’ve presented a varied and stimulating season, which has been very well received by both our subscribers and those who may be new to the Civic Theatre,” she said. “In addition to the touring product, we have worked with local artists to showcase the best of homegrown talent, including Goori Dooki, a co-production with Ngarrama, and the return of the highly-acclaimed company, Stray Dogs, with its upcoming production of Dali, Hallucinogenic Toreador.” With the official 2019 program preparing to draw to a close in November, Leonie has been working hard to finalise the line-up of performances for next year. While the details remain under wraps for now, Leonie said there would be plenty to look forward to when the program is revealed in coming months. “We are so excited to be launching the 2020 season in November, but I’m afraid my lips are sealed. However, I can promise exciting times ahead for the theatre,” she said. “As the City of Newcastle evolves into a global city, the Civic Theatre will be a focal point of culture,

continuing to present, promote and produce a diversity of programs of the highest quality.” Before then, however, audiences still have a number of opportunities to experience shows that typify the variety on offer each year at the Civic Theatre. Following on from Circa’s Peepshow performance on September 13, the theatre will welcome the renowned Bell Shakespeare company to the stage when they present Much Ado About Nothing as part of their 2019 national tour. “As Australia’s national theatre company, our commitment is to make our work available to all Australians, including those outside capital cities,” Bell Shakespeare’s Executive Director Gill Perkins said. “Our national tour is one of the most important things we do in pursuit of this mission.” The highly regarded theatre company was founded by Newcastle-born visionary John Bell in 1990, with the aim of producing the plays of William Shakespeare in a way that was relevant and exciting to Australian audiences. For this year’s national tour, which kicked off in July, the company is exploring Shakespeare’s timeless comic gem Much Ado About Nothing. The classic Shakespearean play is a saucy and razorsharp battle of wits between the bickering Beatrice and Benedick who wield words as weapons, their banter betraying their love and loathing of each other. However, Claudio is quickly seduced by envy, and this idyllic world threatens to come tumbling down as he humiliates Hero. Beatrice and Benedick must join forces to defend true love – even if they can’t recognise it in themselves. Directed by James Evans, this contemporary production is a powerful exploration of the struggle for identity and selfknowledge in a male-dominated world. Zindzi Okenyo stars as Beatrice, with Duncan Ragg as Benedick. They will be joined on stage by Vivienne Awosoga, Danny Ball, Marissa Bennett, Mandy Bishop, Will McDonald, Suzanne Pereira, Paul Reichstein and David Whitney. After directing Bell Shakespeare’s national tour of Julius Caesar in 2018, James Evans was thrilled to take the reins of the 2019 tour as well. “Much Ado About Nothing is the original ‘from hate to love’ romantic comedy that we’ve seen repeated in films and plays since Shakespeare’s time,” he said. “But beneath its sparkling wit and hilarious characters, there is a dark conflict that drives this play to the edge of tragedy. “The story flips from uproarious comedy to utter heartbreak in an instant, and then back again. That is

the genius of Shakespeare and why this play is one of my absolute favourites.” Much Ado About Nothing will make 27 stops on its national tour, hitting the stage in Newcastle on Thursday, October 3. From a 16th century classic to a far more modern interpretation of comedy, the Civic Theatre’s official season will continue on Saturday, October 5, with the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase. Presenting the Festival’s funniest acts in one hilarious night of entertainment, The Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase Tour will be tearing up the freeways of Australia for the seventh year in a row to bring the crème de la crème of the 2019 Festival to Newcastle. Expertly curated and lovingly presented, the Showcase will feature some of the Festival’s hottest acts live on stage for an incredible two hours of hard-hitting laughter. While the line-up of comedians involved in the show is still under wraps, the Showcase is sure to include a strong mix of veteran favourites, international stars, and some of the freshest emerging talents on the Australian comedy scene. From the side-splitting to the surreal, the Civic Theatre’s 2019 season will draw to a close in November with a run of five performances of Dali: Hallucinogenic Toreador, presented by Newcastle’s own Stray Dogs Theatre. The Company was formed in Newcastle in 1995 by playwright Carl Caulfield and his wife, director Felicity Biggins, to help fill the void left by the demise of the Hunter Valley Theatre Company. Carl’s latest production uses the scandalous and surreal life of Salvador Dali to ask questions about art and fame. Outrageous, flamboyant and often on the edge of sanity, Dali considered himself a genius, but was this just a mask to hide his fear? The obsessions and neuroses that drove his art and life – grasshoppers, melting clocks, crutches, telephones and doubles – also expose his shameful secrets and raise disturbing questions about his legacy. As surreal and provocative as a Dali masterpiece, the play promises a wild, joyous and moving journey into Dali’s strange and fascinating world, with performances scheduled at the Civic Theatre Playhouse on November 15, 16, 20, 22 and 23. What springs to your mind when you think of Thai food? Authentic Southeast Asian flavours? Fresh, aromatic ingredients? A little bit of heat and spice? If all of the above sounds pretty good, you’re in luck – Newcastle’s newest Thai destination, The Icon Thai Restaurant, is serving up all this and more down in Honeysuckle. WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

Situated in a prime waterfront location on Honeysuckle Drive, The Icon Thai opened its doors in early February 2019. It’s run by local husband and wife duo, Tide and Nina Bandith. “The team is very proud to be serving up authentic Thai food right in the heart of Newcastle, with an aim to make you feel like you’re taking a trip to Thailand when you visit,” says Tide, who is head chef as well as owner at Icon. He’s been preparing delicious Thai cuisine since he was only 16, previously working with his mum up in Port Macquarie for over ten years. It’s safe to say Tide has brought his years of experience with him to this new venture. The Icon Thai menu is full of authentic Thai favourites: stir-fries, curries, noodles, soups and salads, all made with fresh and flavourful ingredients. Some of the most popular signature dishes include Spicy Crispy Fish (deep-fried fish fillet stir-fried with chilli jam, basil and mixed vegetables), Heavenly Beef (tender strips of marinated beef, deep-fried and served with sweet chilli sauce), and Massaman Lamb Cutlets (served with a classic Massaman sauce, potatoes and peanuts). The Pineapple Fried Rice brings a novel approach to an old favourite: fried rice served in a hollowed-out whole pineapple and topped with fat, juicy prawns. And speaking of prawns – Icon has an extensive menu selection for seafood lovers, including the ever-popular Lemon Prawns, served with homemade Thai lemon sauce and mixed vegetables, and the Seafood Bucket: stir-fried mixed seafood with special chilli jam sauce and basil. Those with a sweet tooth aren’t

forgotten either, with a selection of classic desserts and sweet treats available to round out your meal. Mango Sticky Rice, one of the most famous Thai desserts, is plated up beautifully at Icon: fresh mango shaped into a delicate flower next to a mound of sweet sticky rice, with coconut milk to pour over for the finishing touch. And for a less traditional but equally tasty treat, Icon has recently introduced an intriguing new dessert: Nutella Lava Puffs… How could anyone resist pockets of deep-fried, chocolatey Nutella goodness (provided you can fit them in, that is)? There’s something for everyone here, from the Thai food novice to the seasoned Southeast Asian eater. For those extra-keen enthusiasts, word is that there’s even a secret menu available if you ask the right people… You heard it here first. In terms of the in-house dining experience, visitors can expect a warm, relaxed vibe, perfect for families, larger groups and casual dinners for two. There’s cosy indoor seating among colourful décor: splashes of red and accents of greenery and gold, plus a few quirky touches like cheeky wall hangings and suspended glass jars filled with posies of flowers. But the real star is the venue’s outdoor seating. Making the most of its waterfront locale in Honeysuckle, Icon boasts plenty of outdoor tables in its front courtyard area, making it an ideal spot for lunch in the sun or an al fresco dinner on a warm summer’s evening. The locals certainly seem to be loving The Icon Thai so far – just six months after opening, the restaurant has been announced as a finalist in the 2019 Hunter Local Business Awards. Authenticity. Quality. Sustainability. These are the values underpinning every piece created by Sydney-based artisan jewellery brand, Jika. Combining sustainable processes and recycled materials with traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, Jessica Dalton and her partner Sam create simple yet striking jewellery inspired by nature, myth and dreams. Jessica grew up in the Philippines and travelled extensively before moving to Orange, NSW, to finish high school. She studied design at UNSW Art & Design (formerly known as the College of Fine Arts), then sought to round out her education with a more practical, material skillset, training with a trade jeweller back in Orange. Soon after, she launched Jika from her shed, armed with her new skills, the tools her mentor gifted her, and a passion for imperfection. “So much of the Western jewellery tradition involves seeking perfection,” Jessica says. “I try to resist perfection and symmetry, to cultivate conditions where the metal finds its own natural shape – and people seem to respond to how unique and alive this feels. Maybe because if it’s imperfect, it’s more like our bodies and more like our lives!” Along with her partner Sam, who helps design and hand-make pieces, Jessica is also passionate about sustainable, ethical small business practice. She cites the exploitation of resources and workers in less developed countries as a key reason for keeping things hyper-local and super-sustainable. “Sustainability is central to Jika and our mission, but also integrated into our lives,” Jessica explains. “For us, this isn’t a buzzword or a marketing term – it means that we want to build sustainable relationships

to our ecological context, but also to our community. We committed very early on to run an ethical and sustainable business, which we are proud of having accomplished.” So what does this sustainability look like in practice? Locally sourced, recycled and refined metals, reclaimed and recycled packaging, and a lot of secondhand tools, to name just a few things. “Everything we can source from our area and from small businesses, we do,” Jessica says, adding that she and Sam have felt particularly lucky to belong to various communities that share their values and support their business. There’s a rawness and simplicity that comes from this sustainable way of working, and it’s reflected throughout the whole range. Jika pieces draw on inspiration from nature as well as the patterns, motifs and language of traditional cultures, particularly those of Jessica’s motherland, the Philippines. Understated style and natural shapes abound, and there’s an almost primeval sensibility to the designs – a nod to another of Jessica’s passions: the age-old tradition of jewellery as an expression of culture, connection and self. “Jewellery is a fascinating medium to work with because it’s a tradition that stretches deep into human history,” she reflects. “People from almost every time, place and culture have adorned themselves with things precious and beautiful. We trust, on a deep level, that jewellery does more than make us beautiful; it can protect, inspire and connect us across time and space.” Combining culture and creativity with the meditative nature and hands-on practicality of jewellery-making is something Jessica treasures. When people say they need to lose weight, what are they generally referring to is to lose body fat, and change their body composition? There are clear and undeniable links between excess body fat and a myriad of health problems, diseases and chronic conditions that affect many people, with over 60% of the Australian population considered overweight or obese. Our lifestyles are often the number one reason we are carrying extra body fat. We consume excess calories and don’t move our bodies enough to manage this challenge. What’s the go with fat? Where does it go when you put it on? And how do you get rid of it and where does it go? Fat is a crucial macronutrient, essential for bodily functions. Fats in the body are usually stored as a molecule called a triglyceride. In structural terms, the molecule looks like the letter E. The vertical backbone of the molecule, is a glyceride molecule and the three arms that come off horizontally are separate fatty acid molecules. In these molecules there can a large amount of variation of these three fatty acids. They can be the same, all different, or any combination in between. An average triglyceride molecule has approximately 160 atoms – 55 carbon atoms, 104 hydrogen atoms and only six oxygen atoms.

This misinformation about fat storage, using and burning fat and how many fat cells we have as an adult is commonplace even in today’s society. The common misnomer that until 20 years of age, you didn’t produce any more fats cells has been disproven. One study overfed normal, active and overweight males and females. In the upper body, they laid down an average of 1.9kg of fat, and the fat cells in this area swelled and increased in size. While,

below the belt, the fat cells stayed the same size and grew an extra 2.6 billion of them. Now if we look at the question, where does the fat go when we lose it? In a survey of 50 GP’s, dietitians and personal trainers, they were asked where does the weight go when we lose it? Approximately 60% stated that it got converted to heat or energy, which is incorrect. Only the dietitians, a few per cent got the answer correct. The triglyceride molecules are broken down into molecules of carbon dioxide and water. As discussed earlier, the average triglyceride molecule has 55 carbon atoms, 104 hydrogen atoms and only six oxygen atoms. If we look at carbon dioxide, or C02, it has two oxygen atoms, while water, H20 has one atom of oxygen. If we need to break down triglyceride molecules into carbon dioxide and water molecules, we need to add lots of oxygen. Let’s say we want to lose 10kg of fat. That requires us to add 29 kg of oxygen! That’s a lot of extra huffing and puffing! And as a result, we should get rid of some 28kg of carbon dioxide and 11kg of water. How do we get rid of this extra 39kg of carbon dioxide and water? The answer may surprise you. By breathing it out! We lose a little through sweat and urine, but the majority of those atoms that make up the triglyceride molecules inside your fat cells will come out through your mouth as carbon dioxide and water. Who doesn't love science! By looking at it this way, the major excretory organ is your mouth. As each breath removes approximately 33 milligrams of carbon dioxide and 8.9 milligrams of carbon. Another way to look at it is, you are what you eat. To lose weight, you need to unlock the carbon in your fat cells and lose weight by breathing more. The most effective way to do this is, wait for it… Exercise!

The Benefits of Mindfulness

There are so many definitions of mindfulness. I often refer to it as mind-emptiness rather than fullness. While many sectors of the wellness industry are talking “mindfulness” it could be argued that the broader community is yet to embrace the benefits of involving mindfulness into their lives. So, what is mindfulness? Simply... to be present. “Mindfulness is to be present in every thought, every movement, every action, every feeling, every moment of peace and every breath. It is observance.” – Brett Cameron “We cannot live in the past; it is gone. Nor can we live in the future; it is forever beyond our grasp. We can live only in the present.” – S.N.Goenka So why practice Mindfulness? Mindful meditation or mindfulness has been incorporated into the practices of many health clinicians as a supporting modality for • Stress and anxiety management • Pain relief • Relationship counselling • Sports and performance improvement • Reducing blood pressure and many other health issues It is the mindful practice of acknowledging that we cannot change the past or alter the future. We can only live now. By focussing on whatever it is that you are thinking, or doing, or being now, people have found that their results are improved;

So how do you change this? With Mindful eating. The eight beginner’s steps are: 1. Check the size of your hand. The size of your palm is the recommended portion of protein. While the size of your finger spread represents the salads and/or vegetables. Anything more than that on your plate means that you are overeating. 2. Drink a 250ml glass of water before the meal and also during the meal. Don’t skull it – it isn’t a race. 3. Turn all mobile devices to silent and don’t have them visible at the table. That “very important oh my god the world is ending” Instagram message, or tweet can wait. 4. Put your cutlery (yes knives and forks) down three times during the meal and pause. 5. Chew your food and maybe even count up to 12 times as you chew and then swallow. Let the food move around in your mouth and really be aware of the taste, the texture and the sensation. 6. Ask yourself if the food tastes fresh or is it processed. Does it taste manufactured? 7. Be aware when you are satisfied (not when you are full), this is not a belly-filling contest. Just be satisfied. And if there is food left on the plate that is OK. This is not an “all you can eat restaurant”. 8. Be grateful for the farmer who grew the produce. Be grateful to the animals who provided the meat. Be grateful to the person who prepared and cooked the meal even if it was you. Be grateful that you have enjoyed this meal. Your body has appreciated this meal. Your engine is now running much more efficiently as a result. Practice makes perfect. Make this your daily practice with every mealtime. Even if you are sitting in a car eating a sandwich for lunch, you can still do this (without the knife and fork... obviously). Your body will thank you. Spring has now sprung. Spring is the season of renewal, new life, and new energy. So it’s a good time to look at energising and revitalising your skin after the perils of dry cold winter weather. And we shouldn’t talk about “anti-ageing” as if there is something wrong with ageing. We don’t have much choice about growing older, and there is a lot to value about age. Skills and knowledge acquired by navigating many challenges in life over many years. BUT I digress! We can take advantage of all the knowledge we now have about skincare to ensure we have healthy, glowing, vibrant skin as we age. How can we do this? Well, as always, it begins with sun protection, which is a big one in Australia. Think that little cap you’re wearing is protecting your face? It might be keeping the glare out of your eyes, but that’s about it. within the city’s east and west end precincts, ensuring a huge influx of residents into the CBD area for many years to come. This in itself is critical for the future of the city centre, which needs to continue attracting a mix of new business, workers, residents and tourists to ensure it not only survives but thrives. However, the inner-city residential building spree is no longer limited to just the CBD. Many inner-city suburbs are proving popular as Baby Boomers, first-home buyers and investors have come to recognise the significant lifestyle attributes of Newcastle, the beach, advantages of living in close proximity to the city (without living in the city) and importantly, the affordable house prices that Sydney has long lost. As a result, many suburbs such as Adamstown are proving attractive to both renovators and developers alike with property developers planning more than 300 new apartments across eight projects on Brunker Road in Adamstown alone. Who doesn’t, right? The good news is you can minimise the risk of your building costs escalating during the construction phase and save yourself tens of thousands of dollars. The key is the right amount of due diligence, detail and investigation work upfront in the design and planning phase. Planning for construction is crucial; there needs to be more time spent on design and planning than on the build itself. Everything that you plan will normally work out smoother. Take a simple trip to the grocery store to grab a few items; if you have a list on hand you will know where to start and where to finish, it’ll save you going from the fruit and veggie section, up the other end to grab some milk, then back to grab some bread. You end up going from isle to isle. Then you realise you’ve probably got too much and should’ve gotten a basket. Getting the right amount of detail is an ongoing process. Due diligence in the design phase ensures fewer surprises once things are underway. Usually, the best surprise during a construction project is no surprise! Site Consultation with a Professional Builder When I go to a client’s home, I’m looking at the structure of the existing building, services, and existing building materials. Is there potential asbestos in eaves, wet areas or behind cladding boards? Is plumbing old, where does the sewer line run? Does the electrical board have the correct circuit breakers, does the electrical point of attachment need to be relocated to allow for new cladding, roofing, painting? What walls are load-bearing? What is the access to the site like, can we get machines in? Is traffic control required? Will the project need scaffold, how will it be installed? Soil Test This indicates the expected amount of movement of the soils across the building site and will determine the type of

foundations you need. Normally, structural drawings are not completed until last. This means project costs can go up after approval, which can be frustrating. A $600 soil test can help to determine what type of footing structure may be required; it may also uncover other hidden conditions such as rock or groundwater, which can greatly contribute to project costs and timeframes. The builder and the structural engineer must collaborate on the design! Selecting Products Selecting your bathroom products, tiles, cabinetry etc. instead of an “allowance” means you are locking in a price. Allowances can be good, but they don’t give you cost certainty. Detailed Scope and Specifications A professional builder will have a very detailed scope of works and will detail the products they are using in each area of the build. Do not accept a 2-3-page quote for a project costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, there is too much “grey” area in there, and you want it black and white. Finally…. Don’t build at the top end of your budget; ALWAYS have a contingency in place. The contingency should be determined on the type of project, how complex it is, what site restraints there are. Get your outdoor area ready for the warmer months with these simple tips. • Outdoor rugs: Outdoor rugs ground your furniture pieces, as well as adding texture, colour, and softness to any outdoor space. Rugs also help to define different entertaining spaces for outdoors, guiding guests when they arrive. Most outdoor rugs are easy to maintain with a simple hose down after use. There are many textures available, with polypropylene the most common. Outdoor rugs that look and feel like indoor rugs are the nicest underfoot, however, be aware of drying time if they’re not undercover. • Add a table runner: Bring a little bit of sophistication and style to your outdoor space by using a beautiful table runner to complement the style of your trays and serving platters. Using outdoor fabrics are a great way to ensure these are durable and going to stand the test of food, sun, wine and little fingers. Have one custom made to fit your table, and include matching placemats and napkins for a complete table. Table settings are a great area to be bold with colour. Make it fun! It is an added cost initially, however not having to bring them in after every use allows for peace of mind and a ‘set and forget’ practicality. • Invest in quality: We live in a coastal and sun-filled environment. The selection of the pieces for external use can be daunting, especially when you see the price! However, you need to decide whether the replacement of a cheap material piece in a couple of years is what you’re happy to do as it didn’t last in the sun and salt. Always ask about warranties, and test results from suppliers if available. Look at how the materials will wear over time (materials will fade, teak will grey, the foam will deteriorate) and if these are elements easily maintained over time. • Don’t leave it until last minute: Most furniture lead times are 6-12 weeks for larger items, so we recommend getting in sooner rather than later to make the most of your new designs for the season! Be aware that Christmas cutoffs are already rolling in from our suppliers, so forward-thinking is a must if you want to have the space ready for the big day! • Outdoor curtains: The technology applied to outdoor upholstery fabric can also be applied to drapery fabrics. We are seeing many more exterior sheer fabrics coming through, allowing for that bungalow to be enclosed or shaded with a soft flowing curtain. The retractable wall is also a great addition for Winter months when the added insulation is needed so that the space can be in yearround use.

I’ve been asked many times to repair the mistakes of shoddy workmanship; the result of homeowners trying their hand at the delicate craft or cowboy tradies who should know better. That’s how I know that making the right choice of tradesman, right from the very start is so important because not only are your stress levels tested, but choosing the wrong tradesman can also cause costs to blow out massively. Here are my five tips for getting it right! Qualifications, Licenses and Insurance You wouldn’t let an unqualified surgeon work on your body; so why let an unlicensed tradesperson work on your house? This seems like a simple check, but so many people don’t do it. There are many handyman painters out there that are not licensed or insured. The reason they aren’t licensed is that you need a trade certificate to acquire a license, which

requires four years of refining your craft and learning under a qualified tradesman. If a painting job is over $5,000 in New South Wales, you are by law required to have a Painting and Decorating license. If your painter is uninsured, and an accident occurs where someone is hurt, or there is damage, all costs, fines and court bills are your responsibility. Don’t take the risk – check your tradie’s documentation. Reputation, Reviews and Testimonials The painter you want is the one that Susan told you about four months ago. We all have a friend that is a “Susan”, she loves to tell you about how good her project went and if you were to get anyone you have to get them. Susan might talk too much, but she is right. If you are hiring a painter, you want to know that someone else has already had a good experience. Newcastle has great word of mouth, so if a business has done a great job or a really bad job, it tends to get around. We live in a digital age where it’s very easy to get Google/Facebook out and find a business, and it’s been reviewed. If a company is like SAGE Painting and has had a 5/5 star rating for many years, you know you are in good hands. You can’t remove bad Google reviews, so it’s a good standard to go by. Another great indicator of quality work is that they will display testimonials on their website. Can you view their past work? Asking if they have photos of previous work is a great way to see their workmanship and can also give you great ideas for your project. These pictures are usually easy to find on their website, Facebook page or Instagram. And some painters just won’t see it as something that they want to do, but you should still be able to ask for references of ex-clients that you can talk to.

Are they the cheapest? This is one of the biggest mistakes made in the whole trade industry: Clients like yourself will get three quotes and then assume that they are receiving quotes for comparable work, so pick the cheapest. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The saying “you get what you pay for” is what most people hear after they have gone for the cheapest quote and things have gone wrong. Do they guarantee their work? Ask for a guarantee. Quality painters back themselves and their work so are always willing to provide a money-back guarantee. Corporate Liability for

Employers, including corporations, may be found to be liable for psychological injuries sustained by employees in a similar manner to physical injuries. For example, if an employee is bullied and harassed by their supervisor and develops a recognised psychiatric illness such as depression, the employer may be found liable to pay workers compensation benefits and, potentially, damages. In contrast to workers compensation benefits, which are payable irrespective of fault, damages are only payable in circumstances where the employer intentionally or negligently caused harm to the employee. A corporation may be found to be liable for the

harmful conduct of its employees, particularly management, depending upon the position of the employee that perpetrated the harmful conduct and the context in which it occurred. The recent judgement in the District Court of Ward v Allianz Australia Services Pty Limited [2019] NSWDC293 (5 July 2019) provides a good example of how the law deals with these issues. The Plaintiff, Mr Ward worked for Allianz, the Defendant, as an accounts manager for several years. In 2003, a new state manager, Mr Smith was appointed shortly following the collapse of HIH Insurance Group. Allianz had taken on a number of policies issued by HIH and the period was very significant within the insurance industry and particularly for Allianz employees. Mr Smith managed a team of about 100 employees, including Mr Ward, for about 14 months. It was unchallenged at trial that Mr Smith's management style was aggressive. He told account managers, including Mr Ward, that they had failed and that he would drag them before Human Resources to have them walked out of the building. In one meeting, he declared before account managers who had been collected in a boardroom, that a new era had begun and that he had been "brought in to kick (them) in the head." Mr Smith yelled at Mr Ward on many occasions, telling him he was hopeless at his job and berated him in front of other employees, telling him he was a poor worker. On one occasion, Mr Smith forcefully slapped Mr Ward in the back of the head so hard his head nearly hit the keyboard of his computer. He would barge Mr Ward with his shoulder from time to time. Mr Ward developed PTSD and depression from Mr Smith's conduct and eventually was unable to work. He brought a claim for damages in the District Court. Mr Ward's lawyers asked the Court to find Allianz liable

for Mr Smith's conduct on the basis that Mr Smith was, in fact, the corporation (Allianz). Some employees of a company, particularly senior management, may be regarded to be the company itself. In those circumstances, the conduct of the individual represents the conduct of the company, which is important in cases where the harmful conduct is argued to be outside the scope of the perpetrator's employment duties. If the individual is the company, then it does not matter whether the conduct arose from their employment duties. The Court found Mr Smith was not, in fact, the company, however, fortunately for Mr Ward, it did find that the harmful conduct was sufficiently connected to Mr Smith's employment to render Allianz liable for his conduct. A corporation is not necessarily liable for all conduct of its employees. Firstly, an employer is only potentially liable for the actions of employees that it authorises. However, of those actions it does authorise, it may be found liable for actions undertaken by employees by improper means. The legal distinction can be very fine. In Mr Ward's case, the Court found that although Mr Smith's conduct toward him was clearly improper, it was in pursuit of actions authorised by the employer. The Court accepted evidence to the effect that Mr Smith had been elevated to his management position with the express mandate to 'shake up' and improve the performance of his team. In those circumstances, even though Mr Smith effectively assaulted Mr Ward, Allianz was still found liable for Mr Smith's conduct. Mr Ward was awarded damages of $1,394,421.91 together with interest and legal costs. There are many practical tasks that need to be undertaken after someone passes away, including making sure that the deceased’s assets are properly handled and distributed either in accordance with the deceased’s will or if the person did not have a valid will, the laws of intestacy. The question is: who has the authority to handle the deceased’s assets? If the deceased had a will, that role would generally fall on the executor appointed under the will. Depending on the value, and type, of assets, the executor may then need to apply to the Supreme Court for a Grant of Probate. If the deceased did not have a valid will (otherwise known as dying intestate) then an eligible relative would usually take on the role of administering the assets. Again, depending on the value and type of assets, this person may then need to make an application to the Supreme Court for “Letters of Administration” to be officially appointed as the administrator of the estate. Broadly speaking, a “Grant of Probate” or “Letters of Administration” is a legal document issued by the Supreme Court that authorises an executor or administrator to manage the estate of a deceased person. To apply for a Grant of Probate, the Court needs to be provided with a number of documents, including

an affidavit of the executor addressing such matters as the deceased’s liabilities and how the assets are to be distributed, as well as an inventory listing the deceased’s assets and their value. An application for Letters of Administration is generally more complex than that of a Grant of Probate as the applicant needs to both establish their eligibility to be appointed as the administrator, as well as carefully identify those people eligible to inherit the deceased’s estate. Due to this added complexity, such an application is generally more costly, and takes longer, than an application for a Grant of Probate. Furthermore, the person appointed as the administrator may not be someone you would have wished to hold such responsibility over your affairs. This reinforces the importance of ensuring that you have a valid will in effect. The role of an executor or administrator is an important one, with all of their actions subject to a high standard of care. Without proper legal guidance, an executor or administrator could fail to discharge their legal obligations. As such, we recommend that you consult with a solicitor early on in the process to ensure that the proper processes are followed. When I started the “on tour with the kid” project, it was to ensure I made the most of the year before my little one started school. I’m thrilled, of course, that her school life has led her to great friends and lots of after school activities. However, between Saturday morning sports, birthday parties and the need to be home on Sunday afternoon to be ready for the week ahead, finding time for a weekend away is difficult. With most of the people I know working in the same industry as I do, meaning we are all busy at the same time, a weekend away with friends feels illusive. Recently though, all the stars aligned. The Choirboys were playing at Shoal Bay Country Club on a Saturday night. Only an hour north of Newcastle, it meant being able to get to a Saturday morning football game and still make it the beachside venue by lunchtime. We booked a two-bedroom villa at the adjoining Ramada Resort and planned to meet friends there later in the day. It’s often hard to wind down if you are only away for one night, but from the moment, we turned onto Shoal Bay Road, there is a sudden sense of calm. The majestic mountains frame the pristine coastline. The fresh white exterior of the Country Club extends across two blocks of absolute beach frontage. We checked into our villa, set above the Country Club itself as the accommodation is built into the natural rise of the hill. A beautiful natural amphitheatre to maximise the view of the main act, Shoal Bay Beach. The villa itself was expansive and perfectly set up for a longer stay, full kitchen, laundry and a bathroom for each bedroom. There was no time to relax, however, as the Kid had spotted three pools on a quick walk from reception. The weather was on

the cool side, and it had just begun to rain, which made the heated indoor lap pool and mineral spas our go-to destination. I didn’t need to search for our friends as they had a similar conversation with their own kids and also came straight to the pool on arrival. It was difficult to pull the kids from the water, but eventually, it was time for dinner. The Country Club has recently undergone a 6-million-dollar renovation, and you can feel this comforting blend of upscale 1950’s style and old Hollywood glamour. We are seated by the Maitre d, who had this beautiful way of making us feel like regulars despite this being our first visit. The menu was expansive, with something to please even the fussiest of eaters. My child fits that category but that night she tried a bit of everything as the table filled will steak, seafood, ribs and buttermilk fried chicken wings. I’m sure we didn’t need the wings, but they sounded too good not to try. As darkness fell, the outdoor courtyard below the restaurant was lit by hundreds of fairy lights as the crowd milled around, cocktails in hand, awaiting the start of the show. The unmistakable tones of Mark Gable's voice began in the main bar; the crowd moved in. Classic Aussie rock at it’s best delivered in the way that only The Choirboys can. The room was full, and the crowd was happy. I always find the worst part of going away is that you see posters for things that are happening after you leave. The sensational part of Shoal Bay Country Club is that it is close enough to home to come back to without having to plan an overnight visit. We have returned twice since our first visit, both prompted by a poster we saw that night about their extensive school holiday program for kids — activities every day, including slime workshops, petting zoos, and rock painting. We already have plans to revisit in the upcoming October Holidays. It’s a refreshing change, for someone who travels the way I do with the kid, to see somewhere that caters for the whole family with that blend of sophistication and fun.

Beyond Bank celebrated a rewarding year with many of their community partners, as they handed out a share of the $650,000 in Community Rewards. Each year the Bank provides the Hunterâ€™s not for profit sector the opportunity to participate in their Community Reward Program where loyal supporters can nominate them through the Banksâ€™ Community Reward Account.

HUNTER BUSINESS AWARDS The Hunter Business Awards were presented at NEX Newcastle at the end of August. Awards were presented in 17 categories before nearly 600 people at a gala event sponsored by the University of Newcastle. Chamber CEO Bob Hawes congratulated all winners, saying the record number of entries this year had produced a high-calibre field of finalists.

Hitting the High Notes with Bron Anderson

Conductor & MD for Beauty and the Beast Civic Newcastle until the 24th of August National Australian Open woodwind champion

he Hunter Region has a proven track record of punching well above its weight in the national and even the international music scene. Local soloists, bands, orchestras, choirs and festivals have continually met with critical and commercial success over a wide range of musical styles. The future looks bright for many home-grown musicians and Newcastle based multi-instrumentalist / conductor Bron Anderson is certainly no exception. Bron has immersed herself into a world of musical opportunities and is constantly busy performing, teaching and conducting as well as working in music retail, managing the Foleys Pianos store in Hunter Street. Bron grew up in a musical household with her mother playing guitar around the family home and began lessons at age three at the conservatorium early childhood music programme. A long-gone Darby St mural of a saxophone and trumpet player was all the inspiration Bron needed to choose her instrument.

Currently Newcastle’s Civic Theatre is where you can see Bron plying her trade conducting a 25-piece orchestra in the Metropolitan Players production of Beauty and the Beast which plays until the 24th of August. Bron’s role as manager of Foleys pianos presents other musical challenges “I really enjoy helping match the right instrument to the right person and keeping up with the latest releases in music publishing, it’s a great feeling knowing that students are properly set up from the start for their journey in music ahead.” “Choosing an instrument is such a tactile thing, every player has different needs, young students need to be sized and fitted to violins for example, it’s great to be able to provide that personal touch.” Bron’s years of experience as a performer and teacher can definitely assist in working out what is best instrument for you.

“I always looked at the jazz musicians on the wall on the way home after I had finished lessons and I knew the saxophone was what I wanted to play”. A solid grounding at the Hunter School of Performing Arts, the Newcastle Conservatorium and the Australian Army Band gave Bron the confidence and inspiration to continue her musical journey and pick up some accolades along the way. Bron is a previous National Australian Open woodwind champion, three times Junior woodwind champion and annually still competes with the Toronto Brass Band at the National Band

Championships. Not one to rest on her laurels Bron is continually pushing to improve as a musician and add trumpet and trombone to her four AMus (Associate in Music Diploma) levels. It is no surprise that Bron lists clarinet players, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Gordon Goodwin as favourites, however, alt rock group Imagine Dragons, easy listening classic and movie soundtracks are also regulars on the playlist.
