There’s no question that the city of Newcastle is buzzing with excitement ahead of Supercars. Months of pain and inconvenience caused by roadworks throughout the city will melt away as the excitement of race day approaches. For the first time in its 57 year history the V8 Supercars Championship is heading to the Hunter this month, with the best race car drivers in the country preparing to battle it out for the inaugural Coates Hire Newcastle 500.

To be held from November 24-26, the event is expected to attract thousands of motorsport fans to the region for three days of full throttle action and excitement. Our special pull out feature in this issue provides an insider’s look at who the big names are on and off the track in both racing and live entertainment plus there are loads of places to eat, stay, things to see and do for visitors to the area. If a day trip or extended stay in Wine Country or Port Stephens is on the cards – we’ve got that covered too.

He’s known for the biting satire of a string of British cult comedies and has a current hit series on the BBC, applying his trademark wit to William Shakespeare’s early theatrical life.

This month award-winning British writer and comedian Ben Elton will introduce audiences to a very different landscape to the one he is synonymous with when his new film Three Summers (which he has directed) hits our screens. Ben stopped by Newcastle for a sneaky advance screening of the film at Tower Cinemas and of course took the time to have a chat with us about all things comedy, politics and of course romance – which is at the heart of the film.

As the November issue of intouch Magazine hits the stands, the long-awaited exhibition Painting Memory kicks off for a 10-week stint at Newcastle Art Gallery. The exhibition presents favourite works of art that explore the history of painting in Australia and features key artists such as Brett Whiteley, William Dobell and Grace Cossington Smith.

Ben Elton Embraces Aussie Culture in

He’s known for the biting satire of a string of British cult comedies and has a current hit series on the BBC, applying his trademark wit to William Shakespeare’s early theatrical life. But this month award-winning British writer and comedian Ben Elton will introduce audiences to a very different landscape to the one he is synonymous with.

For his second stint at the helm of a feature film as both the writer and director, Elton has turned his comedic focus to his adopted homeland of Australia.

Set over three years at a fictional folk music festival called “Westival”, Three Summers is an ensemble comedy that embraces the diversity of modern Australia.

Having spent the past 30 years “strongly connected” to Australia, including ten years living in Freemantle with his wife and three children, Elton said it was inevitable his work and home lives would eventually intertwine.

“I live in Freemantle, I’ve lived here for the last ten years, the last 30 years I’ve been strongly connected to Australia, I’ve been a citizen almost 15 years now, and it’s always been a dream of mine to get involved in my own industry,” he said.

“Of course I’m also British, I’ve had a long career in Britain, and I still value it, I’ve even got a sitcom on the BBC at the moment, but I do live here, and a long, long-held ambition has been to try and tell Australian stories as an Australian.

“Last time I tried this was with (the novel) Stark 30 years ago, I was very much a Pom looking in.

“I’d just met my girlfriend who was going to become my wife eventually. Obviously, I didn’t know that then, but we were

hanging out together, and I’d come to Australia. I sort of just dropped everything in Britain to the frustration of my agent to come out here and I wrote Stark as a kind of Pom looking in, as a guy who’d just turned up and was hanging out with this girl.

“Now 30 years later, a very far way down the journey that started that year when I met my wife in 1986, I feel very much that it’s time for me to tell stories from within.

“I wanted to tell a whole bunch of stories set in my own home state of WA, obviously always comedy, set at a music festival where you meet all sorts of types; everybody likes music you know so we’re all equal in the queue to the portaloo.

“As a writer, as an artist who feels this ongoing desire to create, tell stories, make jokes, make people laugh and think a bit maybe, it was inevitable I would start writing about Australia, it’s where I live.”

The setting for Three Summers (both literally in terms of where it was filmed and as the inspiration for the story) is certainly as Australian as it gets, having been based on Elton’s own experiences at the Fairbridge Music Festival in Western Australia.

Then there’s the microcosm of characters who fill out the plot – the feisty lead singer of an Australian “Irish” folk band (Keevey, played by former Home and Away star Rebecca Breeds), a folk-music hating Theremin player (Roland, acted

by Irishman Robert Sheehan), a community radio superstar (Magda Szubanski), a fiercely patriotic Morris dancer (Michael Caton), an Indigenous dance troupe, a group of wine-loving empty nesters, a power-tripping security guard, a wannabe girl band and some musical asylum seekers.

While the rich tapestry of characters touches on some of the more timely and topical issues on Australia’s social agenda (immigration, refugees and Indigenous rights), Elton said he didn’t set out to write a political story, with the awkward budding romance between Keevey and Roland the true heart of the film.

“I’m a romantic. People say ‘Oh you seem to be a political writer’ – (but) I’ve put a love story at the core of every single book I’ve ever written – every musical, my plays. I love a love story, and I really enjoyed creating this one because it’s a really quirky love story between two very different musicians,” he said.

“I set out to write a great romantic comedy with a whole bunch of other stories interwoven around it. I’m always driven to write stories, the fact that there are some relevant themes, you might call them socio-political themes… they’re just part of the national conversation.

“I mean for me you can’t really write a disparate group of Australian stories without touching on the things we’re all talking about. We’re all talking about the refugees; we’re all Michael Caton and Magda Szubanski

talking about indigenous recognition - so they play a part in my movie. Not exclusively of course because there’s a bunch of characters who are just about the fact they get too drunk to see the music, or there’s a security guard who needs to get a sense of humour or whatever.

“As always with me, I’m very much a community person, I love community... so when I write a community of stories they’re going to cover a lot of ground. I’m pleased and proud if some of that ground is thought-provoking, I think art should be thoughtprovoking at times.

“I think it would be lovely if people look at Three Summers and hopefully have a wonderful laugh, perhaps shed the odd tear and maybe at the end of it, it does spark a conversation.

But that’s not my intention; I think if I did that I’d be very

Elton certainly knows a thing or two about great comedy, as a multi-award winning novelist, screenwriter, playwright, lyricist and stand-up comedian.

Synonymous with British comedy particularly in the 1980's, his 35-year career as a writer features a string of hit television shows including cult classics The Young Ones and Blackadder, as well as the current BBC sitcom Upstart Crow, a satirical look at the early life of William Shakespeare, which has just been commissioned for a third series.

He has also written 15 novels (including 10 UK No. 1 bestsellers), and a host of successful stage shows including We

Will Rock You, his musical inspired by the songs of iconic British rock band Queen.

Elton made his feature film debut as a writer and director 17 years ago with the movie Maybe Baby, which starred Hugh Laurie and Joely Richardson, and was based on his novel Inconceivable.

Over the past three-and-a-half decades Elton has worked with some of the greatest comedic talents to come out of Britain, including Rowan Atkinson, Rik Mayall, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French.

He said he was blessed that in his first Australian feature film, he was able to add some “true blue” comic royalty and upand-coming comedic talents to that list.

Me2 Disability Program A new program to enhance the life of people with a disability in Lake Macquarie, running throughout this month offering free activities such as art exhibitions, hands-on workshops, sports days and more. Glow Hard Maitland Saturday, 11th November The Glow Hard Fun Run is an easy 5km fun run event in Maitland for the whole family! Participants can walk, run, dance or stroll through the course while getting covered in colour!

"I guess water is my element. I've always marvelled at the sea and rivers and rain. It wasn't conscious at all, but on reflection, it definitely is a preoccupation on this record.

What that means, I don't know, but I do know that this is an album we’re really looking forward to exploring live," he said.

"The way I write lyrics is very stream-of-consciousness. I never question them until we perform live, so I discover them in time as much as the audience."

The Church will be joined onstage by special guest, former Remy Zero (UK) guitarist Jeffrey Cain on keys, additional guitars and vocals. A Very Kransky Christmas New Exhibition Delivers ‘THE BOX’

A new travelling exhibition capturing Renew Newcastle’s out of the box thinking will be officially opened for the first time on Thursday 2 November in the foyer at NewSpace. The exhibition will continue at NewSpace until November 12, after which you can catch The Box exhibition at Newcastle City Library from November 16 until January 31, 2018.

Creative Facility Now Open for Innovation!

Newcastle City Library has reopened following a major revitalisation project, resulting in improved spaces to read, do research and engage in creative activities.

"The refurbishment is bringing the building squarely into the digital age," said Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes. "This new Library space will meet the community's current needs for technology access, flexible work and study spaces, and a focus on collaboration."

The floor space of City Library has increased by 100 sqm as part of the $1.3 million project. Newcastle Region Library is particularly excited to unveil its new digital 'makerspace.'

"Called 'The Space,' this area will be used to showcase the latest technologies and will be located on the library's first floor along with new work and study areas," said Council's Manager Libraries Suzie Gately. "This community resource will provide opportunities for groups to explore their creativity and collaborate in new and innovative ways."

"A program of activities operating in the makerspace will include electronics, 3D printing, coding, robotics and digital embroidery, just to name a few," said Gately. "The renovation has also created new quiet spaces in the library and a dedicated children's zone."

The Space is a place for people in the community to connect, collaborate and innovate. A range of classes are being offered to start in November, which will include a wide range of programs for Christmas gifts and decorating in December.

The Newcastle Art Gallery collection began in 1945 when Dr Roland Pope, an ophthalmic surgeon from Sydney, promised the bequest of his art collection of From Margaret Olley to Brett Whiteley, Rupert Bunny to Grace Cossington Smith - 36 of the "greatest hits" from the Newcastle 137 Australian paintings to Newcastle - conditional upon the construction of an Art Gallery. In 1957 'Newcastle Art Gallery collection - including well known Newcastle-born City Art Gallery' opened on the second floor of the War artists William Dobell and John Olsen - will be on show in an upcoming free exhibition Painting Memory: From the collection. When Choosing Window Coverings

WORDS LARA O'DONNELL - Tailored HQ Window coverings are an essential design element to be considered as a part of an overall interior design scheme, but unfortunately, they are often overlooked until the end of a job. The problem with this is that it can limit your options (especially in a new build), and you can miss out on achieving the ideal solution.

For example, curtain tracks and roller blinds can be hidden in bulkheads, or curtains can seem to disappear into a cavity, or they can be motorised and wired in before walls go up. These little tweaks at the construction stage can have a huge impact on the finished product both visually and for you, the end user.

Consider the overall aesthetic and how they will feature in the space. Will they be a highlight and stand out or blend in? What are you trying to achieve with them – softening of the room, day privacy, night privacy, insulation, sun protection, complete light block out, or a combination? To find the best solutions, the functionality of not only the products but also the window or door opening must be taken into account.

If you have wall to wall glass windows or doors and are wanting curtains, consider where the stack will be when the curtains are open. If a track is the width of the opening, the stack of a curtain will be covering a portion of the glass, reducing your view and the light that can get in, effectively making the space within feel smaller. Here at Tailored HQ, we take curtain tracks past window or door openings where possible to get the stack off the glass and utilise the light to its fullest potential.

Have a corner or angle to work with? Not a problem! The bending or curving of curtain tracks is an easy solution, allowing a free flow of the curtain in the space as opposed to butting tracks into a corner which can limit

movement options as well as create a light gap.

We also utilise the bent tracks in situations where the glass is wall to wall. The tracks are bent around the corner back into the room, allowing the stack to be over walls instead of the glass, clearing the view. Most people are none the wiser of the use of this visual trick.

Roller blinds can also be utilised for corners or angled windows with angled brackets used to allow the blinds to move up and down on one chain, so you do not have to reach over things to get to chains. Up to three blinds can be ‘linked’ to the one control with these brackets. One thing to remember with blinds is that there is always a gap between each blind to allow for the brackets above. This gap can be an important factor to consider especially in bedrooms where darkness is key.

Fabric selection (the fun bit!) should be both an aesthetic and practical decision.

Consider where you live though. Newcastle, being near the ocean, means there is salt in the air which can deteriorate natural fibre fabrics faster. Polyester has, in the past, had a bad reputation, however, an element of polyester in the mix will help stabilise natural fibres (such as linen). This generally allows the product to be washed and stand up to direct sunlight better than a product which has 100% natural fibre content.

Also consider the space the fabric will be in – a blind in a bathroom will get exposed to a lot of moisture, so the fabric choice must be able to withstand this and survive. Fabric selection, whether for blinds or curtains, is where you can help keep the finished product within your budget. With such a wide range of products available at a multitude of price points, there is an option for everyone.

Remember that window coverings purchased now are long-term investments.

They can be utilised as textural artworks that just happen to have a practical use as well.

All those who love colour “it is OK!” Using colour in our homes is trending in a big way with navy, terracotta, greens and even yellow adding to Spring colour schemes.

If we look around at the fashions for spring, beautiful bright floral dresses and tops can be seen in the stores. Greenery is still a popular trend that is a lovely addition to your neutrals and adding some of the new Pantone colour shades will develop a beautiful spring feel to your home.

Sticking to the same hue is very important when adding colours together. Already some beautiful floral cushions and artwork can be seen in our store.

Interior design has always followed fashion, and it usually takes a few years to translate into interior design, but after a discussion with another insideout team member recently, she noted that the timeline for this happening is getting shorter, and I agree.

Colour can be tastefully added to a neutral pallet, and we love to help you do this correctly - so “call in and ask for advice” is our number one rule in our store! This will save you time and money; you will also achieve a more finished result.

Neutral whites are more of an off-white, and sandy colours complement them. Midtone greys will add depth, and all these neutrals can be grounded with beautiful navy or terracotta. Yellow and mauves can also be added to these neutral hues.

Now is the time to do the unexpected.

Mix colours that you wouldn’t have done in the past. A Bohemian influence and eclectic trends should make us feel we can be brave and add in the colours we love and evoke the feel we are looking for in our home.

If colour scares you, try adding the smallest amount, if this is grounded well,

it will change your neutral pallet up for the spring months. You don’t need to go overboard – here are a few colour tips: • Hue - This is one of the main properties of a color, defined technically as "the degree to which a stimulus can be described as similar to or different from stimuli that are described as red, green, blue, and yellow".

• Greens - Create a cool and calm feel to your home (emerald green can add a stylish elegance if adding black and white as a contrast).

• Blues - Help to create a fresh and coastal feel (Navy and white together can look very stylish and create a formal look) Dark navy in a bedroom and adding a few contrasting colours in the same hue (no white) will have a moody effect. Mixing blue and greens can be done well; hue is the important thing to get right.

• Yellow - Creates a happy mood and gives a warming effect. If overused though it can lose this feeling and just be overpowering.

(Apparently, babies cry more in a yellow room, so don’t paint your nursery this colour).

You will notice when playing around with colours that they change when put together.

Welcoming the World to Our Great City The Coates Hire Newcastle 500 is set to be the biggest sporting event in the city’s history, and it is incredible to see our entire region getting behind it.

Anticipation is building, and Newcastle is ready to welcome the world to this great city.

An estimated 150,000 spectators are expected to converge on the city centre for what will be the finale of the 2017 Supercars Championship. Destination NSW estimates the event will attract more than 81,000 interstate and international visitors to the city over the next five years, bringing tens of millions of tourist dollars to our region.

But it’s about much more than the race.

Hosting this event has prompted Newcastle City Council to undertake a comprehensive renewal program across the city’s east end.

Never before in Newcastle’s history has such an extensive urban renewal program been completed in such a short space of time.

Better roads, better footpaths and cycleways, more reliable water supply and internet and a greener foreshore with more usable shade are among the benefits that will create a legacy for residents and businesses in the area long after the chequered flag is waved.

Watching Australia’s best Supercar drivers race around Shortland Esplanade, past Newcastle Beach, through the new Horseshoe Beach hairpin bend and down the Wharf Road straight with our working harbour in

the background will be an exciting first for Australian motor racing fans.

While there has been some short-term pain as we’ve prepared for this landmark event, we’re confident that the east end renewal program will protect our local heritage and lift infrastructure in the precinct to a standard befitting an emerging global city.

I’m pleased that we’re now starting to see the long-term gains that this race will deliver for our city.

The thousands of people who packed Newcastle Foreshore earlier this year for the Newcastle 500 ticket launch was just a taste of things to come.

SUPERCARS TO RACE IN NEWCASTLE FOR FIRST TIME When Newcastle was named the new host city for the series final of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the next five years, it was a dream come true for the tens of thousands of Hunter Supercar fans and stealing the crown from Sydney Olympic park in the process.

“The Hunter has thousands of Supercars fans who now have an event to call their own,” said Premier Mike Baird at the official announcement of the events new home.

“The Coates Hire Newcastle 500 will be the first Supercars race ever held in Newcastle and is another major event secured for Regional NSW. It’s a picturesque course that takes in some of the city’s best landmarks, including Nobby’s Beach and Fort Scratchley.

“The race is expected to inject more than $57 million worth of revenue into the Hunter

region over the next five years, and attract 81,000 visitors from around Australia and internationally,” he said.

Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton agreed, adding that it was an exciting moment for Supercars and the people of Newcastle.

“The Coates Hire Newcastle 500 is a spectacular event that will showcase Newcastle to a huge national and international audience and be a fitting finale to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship,” he said.

The event has been secured by Destination NSW in partnership with Supercars Australia and Newcastle City Council. The inaugural event will take place from November 24 to 26. Tickets are still available from www.supercars.com – but be quick!

The long wait is almost over for Newcastle motorsport fans gearing up for what could well be the most exciting three days of their year.

For the first time in its history the V8 Supercars Championship is heading to the Hunter this month, with the best race car drivers in the country preparing to battle it out for the inaugural Coates Hire Newcastle 500.

To be held from November 24-26, the event is expected to attract thousands of motorsport fans to the region for three days of full throttle action and excitement.

The 250km race will be contested on a challenging 2.6km street circuit that runs through the eastern end of the Newcastle CBD, taking in scenic views along Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle and Nobby’s beaches and Newcastle Harbour.

Aside from race day glory, drivers will also be vying for allimportant championship points, with the Newcastle 500 set to wrap up the 2017 series.

While Newcastle’s hosting of the event is a dream come true for local V8 fans, it’s also the perfect opportunity for those new to the sport to check out first hand just what the Supercars excitement is all about.

If the series were a popularity contest, then “Lowndsey” would be a shoe-in for the top gong. Not that he needs to rely on his fan-favourite status – the 42-year-old has some pretty serious driving skills, which have made him among the most successful drivers in Australian motorsport history.

His on-track achievements speak for themselves – up until recently he held the record for the most race wins in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship and V8 Supercar Championship; was the first driver to reach 100 Championship wins at the sport's most elite level; is the recipient of a record five Barry Sheene Medals, the sport’s best and fairest award; and has claimed the crown at the Bathurst 1000 (the most coveted race of the series) an impressive six times.

Off the track Lowndes has some pretty slick credentials as well, having been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2012 for his service to his sport and the community. The recognition was in part due to his charitable work with the RSPCA, Violence Against Women, and his continual work on road safety through the Fatality Free Friday campaign.

While the Team Vortex (Triple Eight Race Engineering) driver is out of the running for the series title and was sitting in a season-high sixth on the leaderboard at the time of print, the chance to secure his first race win for 2017 will ensure there’s plenty of fire left in his belly when he takes to the starting grid in Newcastle.

JAMIE WHINCUP The form man of recent times in the Supercars Championship, Jamie Whincup is the ‘all-time’ champ with six titles to his name.

His last championship victory in 2015 meant he surpassed Dick Johnson, Mark Skaife and Ian ‘Pete’ Geoghegan on the all-time winners list, while his race win at Sydney Motorsport Park on August 20 this year saw him overtake Lowndes to become the greatest Supercars driver of the current era with 106 race victories over 13 seasons.

Fiercely competitive race tactics have seen him court his fair share of controversy over the years, but regardless of whether competitors and race fans like him or leave him, the 34-year-old Red Bull Holden Racing Team (Triple Eight Race Engineering) driver is always prepared to stick to his guns.

Off the track his need for speed is just as apparent with “JDub”, as he is known to his friends, regularly taking to the mountain trail or roadway for a bike ride, or heading out on the Gold Coast waterways for a spot of jet skiing, water skiing or wakeboarding.

Two race wins, and a host of top 10 results have catapulted Whincup to the top of the leaderboard, but with less than 200 points separating the top five drivers, there’s no time to relax if he wants to claim his seventh championship title.

AAREN RUSSELL You can’t write a Supercars story in Newcastle without mentioning our very own V8 young gun, Aaren Russell.

With a father who owns Newcastle motorsports institution Go Karts Go and a brother who made his Supercars’ debut in 2007 racing with the family’s Novocastrian Motorsport team, it’s little wonder Russell eventually made his way into the Championship.

Russell’s maiden Supercars drive came in 2015 when he and his brother Drew scored a wildcard entry into the Bathurst 1000. The following year the Newcastle driver signed for Erebus Motorsport. However, it was a short-lived partnership after a contractual disagreement saw Russell split with the team in July 2016.

He then joined Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport to partner Andre Heimgartner in the Pirtek Enduro Cup series and was poised to take up a full-time contract with the racing team in 2017 before the deal fell through.

All’s well that ends well for Russell however, with a shock call-up in July this year seeing him rejoin Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport for a number of events, including the Newcastle 500.

While his highest-placed finish so far in 2017 has been in 17th at the Bathurst 1000, there’s no doubt the passionate Novocastrian will be giving it all he’s got in front of his home crowd at the end of the month. ■ All images by Mark Horsburgh, Edge Photographics.

Once the racing finishes the rock starts, and the blockbuster entertainment schedule for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 is set to rival the racing action with chart-topping twins The Veronicas performing alongside fellow Australian Superstar Delta Goodrem to kick off festivities on Friday, November 24 in an all-female show before Cold Chisel and Spiderbait take the stage on the Saturday, November 25 for a night of hard rock.

Supercars CEO James Warburton said the calibre of entertainment across the event with a true Australian flavour was amongst the best line-ups in the country.

“It’s unheralded that for as little as $128 you can see four of Australia’s hottest artists on the same stage across two nights of pop and Aussie rock, as well as all of the on-track action,” Mr Warburton said.

“This is, without doubt, the strongest bill of all Aussie acts in the country this year. Newcastle is in for an awesome show.”

In response to the already overwhelming ticket demand for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500, Supercars recently announced the construction of an additional grandstand to meet public

demand. The new grandstand will be located outside of the camp Shortland Hairpin and provide an additional 323 seats.

The new grandstand will provide an excellent vantage point of the race and includes views to a big screen TV. “Support for this event has been extraordinary and is on track to become the biggest event in Newcastle’s history and possibly the biggest in regional NSW outside of our Bathurst race,” Warburton said.

“With the circuit really taking shape and the civil works coming to an end we expect interest in tickets to only increase as the race draws closer.”

Legendary Australian rock band, Cold Chisel will take control of the stage on Saturday, 25 November in what will be their only mainland-Australia show for 2017 and this show marks the first time Cold Chisel has played in Newcastle since their massive Light The Nitro tour back in 2011 (which remains the biggest grossing tour ever by an Australian-based band).

2015’s One Night Stand tour was unable to get to Newcastle, so this concert marks a special payback for Novocastrians.

Cold Chisel is one of Australia’s most revered rock outfits, with a history that spans forty years and a catalogue of songs and albums that have become part of the nation's psyche.

Newcastle Community to Benefit from Charity Partnership Supercars Australia will partner with three leading Newcastle community organisations as the official charity partners of the 2017 Coates Hire Newcastle 500. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Nobbys Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and Newcastle Beach Surf Lifesaving Club will be the official cocharity partners for the inaugural event.

As part of the partnership, tickets, grid walks and other experiences will be on offer with all funds raised divided between the three charity partners. The inaugural Newcastle 500 Grand Final Breakfast will be a highlight on the calendar. Supercars CEO James Warburton said the sport was delighted to be working alongside some of Newcastle’s iconic community services.

"These three local partners provide crucial services for the Newcastle community, and we’re incredibly proud to be supporting the tireless work they do,” he said.

“By working with these organisations, we can assist with fundraising activities and awareness, giving back to the community that will host our final event of the year.”

Brings Renewal to Newcastle's East End As Newcastle gears up to host the 24-26 November Coates Hire Newcastle 500, the city's East End has benefited from a comprehensive renewal program of road works and infrastructure improvements.

The race is set to be the biggest sporting event in Newcastle's history, and the world will be watching. While our stunning beaches, working harbour and the cafes and shops of our thriving CBD will provide the perfect backdrop to the action, these infrastructure projects will make the city more amenable to visitors while also providing long-term benefit to residents.

Newcastle City Council has invested almost $10 million in the east end in the lead-up to the Newcastle 500, and never before in the city's history has there been such an extensive urban renewal program in such a short space of time. Better roads, improved footpaths and cycleways, more reliable water supply and internet and a greener foreshore with more usable shade are among the benefits for residents and businesses in the area.

By completing all works projects in a single, short timeframe Council was able to reduce project management and associated costs as well as disruption to residents and businesses. Roadworks along the track route created the opportunity to improve infrastructure beneath the roadway,

such as drainage and optic fibre cabling. Ageing kerbs and gutters long overdue for attention have also been revamped.

While there has been some short-term pain preparing for this landmark event, Council is confident that the east end renewal program will create a lasting improvement in the precinct's infrastructure for years to come.

Renewing Newcastle's oldest street - The largest project within the suite of works is the renewal of Watt Street Newcastle’s oldest road. Reconstruction of Watt Street includes a new, smoother roadway, new footpaths, kerbs and gutters, smart lighting, smart city underground cabling and new water mains.

Better connections between the Foreshore and the Bathers Way - A major pedestrian and cyclist bottleneck between the Bathers Way at Nobbys Beach and Joy Cummings Promenade running parallel with the harbour is being widened into a shared pathway, with Tug Berth Road converted into a dedicated cycling lane.

AFTER Newcastle Foreshore: more shade and parking - Visitors to the Foreshore will enjoy almost ten times more usable shade once new trees and shrubs are fully grown. These will include 130 advanced shade trees, more than a third of which will be Norfolk Island pines. Two car parks off Wharf Road have been linked to create 80 extra parking spaces.

Nobbys Road upgrade - A notoriously narrow footpath in front of the Boatmen’s Row terrace houses is being widened, with much-loved footpath gardens enlarged. The roadway is being completely renewed and will include improved access to Fort Scratchley. New lights over the Nobbys Road pedestrian crossing will increase safety for pedestrians and motorists.

Smart City - The transformation of Newcastle’s east end includes innovations to help us become one of Australia’s leading smart cities. Most visible are the smart poles along much of the track route.

These include remotely dimmable street lighting and WiFi transmitters, and the capacity to be upgraded with a range of high-tech components, including traffic monitoring cameras and public announcement systems. Below ground, smart cabling is future-proofing key parts of the CBD like Watt Street, providing the infrastructure needed for high-speed internet.

“Christmas time can bring additional hardships for families in crisis, and it is children who often struggle the most. Each Christmas, demand for Samaritans services and support increases fourfold, with people in the community realising the difficulties and pressures of additional Christmas expenses,” Samaritans CEO, Peter Gardiner, said.

The Samaritans Christmas Appeal aims to raise $120,000 to support and bring hope to families living in the shadow of disadvantage, and also to offer joy and dignity to those who are without friends or family at Christmas time.

“As we celebrate with loved ones and marvel at the joy we see on the faces of children around us, we’re also encouraging the community to remember the families who aren’t so fortunate, families who are facing hardships like losing a job, escaping domestic violence and losing hope,” Mr Gardiner said.

“Samaritans Christmas Lunch in the Park event is an opportunity to celebrate inclusion, bringing people together and sharing community and festive spirit. No one should be alone or unable to celebrate on Christmas Day,” Mr Gardiner said.

As Samaritans Christmas volunteer Sharon explains, people like Cath* who come to Samaritans at Christmas usually have a story of hardship that has led to their struggle.

“Samaritans is grateful for the generosity and support of all of our sponsors for Christmas Lunch in the Park, particularly major sponsors Port Waratah Coal Services, Woolworths Mayfield and Event Cinemas. I’d encourage all who are able to give generously this Christmas to support those less fortunate,” Mrs Pichaloff said.

“Creating Christmas lunch last year was beyond what I ever expected – it felt like one big family Christmas lunch table, there was so much love in the air. We can’t put on such a magnificent event without community support,” she said.

It is sometimes easy to take Christmas for granted – each year, hundreds of children attend Samaritans Christmas lunch events, with the flagship event held in Newcastle and two other events held in Singleton and Wyong.

“Without these free events, these children would have no way to celebrate. Instead, they enjoy a delicious plate of food, ice cream, face painting, jumping castles and a gift from Santa – you can imagine the smiles on all of their faces!” Mrs Pichaloff said.

For Local Community Group WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN Members of the Newcastle and Hunter Bahá'í community are celebrating a milestone moment in the history of their religion.

This month represents the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder of their faith, a prophetic figure known as Baha’u’llah (“The Glory of God”).

While he was born in Tehran, Persia (now Iran) on November 12, 1817, the bicentenary of his birth was officially celebrated according to the Bahá'í holy calendar on October 21-22 this year, with activities held throughout Australia and around the world.

Around 250 people including dignitaries from across the Hunter gathered at Dixon Park Surf Club on October 20 for the region’s main public celebration of the event, which included dinner, a presentation about Baha'u'llah and multicultural entertainment.

Mez Mumtahan from the Hunter Bahá’í Community said a number of other celebrations were also held at local and neighbourhood levels.

The Bahá’í Faith is a modern, independent, monotheistic religion, with more than five million followers around the world. It is based on the idea that humanity is one family; a single people inhabiting the planet Earth, bound together in a common destiny under one God. Baha’is believe that the world’s major religions represent unfolding chapters in God’s teachings for humankind and that the writings of Baha’u’llah represent God’s guidance for this age.

Baha’u’llah said a united world would produce the peace and prosperity foretold in the holy books of the great religions of the world and in the poems and songs of sages down the ages.

Distinctive Bahá'í Houses of Worship have been established around the world, offering a place where visitors can simply pray and meditate in a serene atmosphere, or listen to the holy scriptures of the world’s religions being recited and sung.

In his teachings, Baha’u’llah outlined the steps necessary to achieve an ordered progression into a just and peaceful world, which included an inner transformation of people as well as a revitalisation of society based on principles of justice and respect for all people as equal members of one human family.

“It was an inspiring prediction of the eventual endpoint of the globalisation process the world is now witnessing with all its disorder, retreats and advances,” Mez said.

“His Faith, now established worldwide, teaches the equality of women and men, the abolition of the extremes of wealth and poverty, the harmony of science and religion, and the establishment of an equal standard of human rights for all people.”

The Bahá'í Faith was introduced in Australia in 1920 by Englishman John Henry Hyde Dunn and his wife Clara Dunn,

who had been raised in Canada by Irish parents. Both had become Baha’is in the United States in the early 20th century before moving to Sydney.

Today there are around 20,000 followers of the faith in Australia, spread across more than 400 communities, who seek to implement the vision of Baha’u’llah by establishing venues for collective devotions, creating study circles to examine writings of spiritual significance, and conducting spiritual education programs.

For the past two years, a group of volunteers from the local Bahá’í community have been hosting monthly “Soul Food” events in Booragul. Held at Lake Macquarie Art Gallery on the second Sunday of each month, the event was established to provide a place where people of all faiths, beliefs and backgrounds could gather together to reflect on and celebrate their diversity.

Featuring live music, audio-visual pieces and readings from faiths and philosophers, authors, leaders and indigenous cultures from all over the world, Soul Food is designed to remind people of the common threads that tie all of humanity together.

The free event is open to all members of the community, with each month’s program set on a specific theme. The next Soul Food will be held on Sunday, November 12 and will explore the precious nature of time, how quickly it passes and how profound it can be when we make the most of it as part of the theme “A Sense of Time”.

Cruising the Mekong

By Simone Berryman Having recently returned from cruising the Mekong River in Cambodia and Vietnam, I can highly recommend this experience, it is such a relaxing way to travel.

The beauty of unpacking once on a luxury cruise ship, yet still see the sights and experience adventures at a variety of destinations makes for the perfect holiday.

With shore excursions, we were able to experience life in the local villages and cities, allowing the opportunity to immerse yourself into the culture. These tours are with local guides and travel is by tuk tuk’s and rickshaws, or small boats to local food markets.

The cruise is all inclusive of meals, which are a mix of Western and Asian influence to cater for all needs, and the service is amazing. The cabins are very modern and luxurious, with private bathrooms. From your bed you can watch the activity on the banks of the river, or step out on to the balcony.

Up top there is an open deck with sun lounges to enjoy the sights and company of other guests, plus an onboard pool which was beautifully refreshing after a day touring. There is also a fully equipped bar and a Spa for relaxing massages.

A highlight for me was cruising through the Chao Gao Canal where you can see the stilted homes and shacks where the locals live along the river going about their day to day life. The homes are truly amazing! 80% of the population rely directly on the river system for food and livelihood so there is always so much activity along the Mekong offering many wonderful photo opportunities.

UNEXPECTED BEAUTY

in Repurposed Street-Art

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN In these days of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’, it seems as though almost anything can be repurposed and given a second life.

Even something as unlikely as old graffiti paint. For the past 12 months, musician and artist Grace Huie Robbins has been collecting pieces of paint that have naturally broken off historic street art sites in the inner West of Sydney.

After sanding them back to reveal accumulated layers of different coloured paint, Grace shapes them, coats them in resin and mounts them on sterling silver findings to create uniquely beautiful earrings, brooches and pendants, which she sells under the label of Graffiti Ore. “Graffiti Ore is an extremely new venture. I began collecting and experimenting with pieces of graffiti paint in the Inner West of Sydney (where I am based) just around a year ago,” Grace said.

“I realised the potential of the incredible material having seen an article online about Fordite, which is a similar manmade agate that naturally forms from layers of car paint.

“I will pick up and use any piece I see. Usually, I'll have no idea what each piece will end up as when I find it as I almost always sand through the top layer.

“The sites where I look for the paint have to have a graffiti wall that is old, regularly painted over, outdoors and not well maintained, so there are pieces that are naturally breaking off.

“After I've collected and cleaned the pieces, I try to get the most out of the layers of colours as possible.

“I use an industrial sander to flatten the surface, which creates a unique marbling pattern from the imperfections between the layers. Sometimes I'll use chisels to dig into the paint to get to a particular colour.

“After I’ve shaped them I spend a long time cleaning up the edges and polishing before coating them in resin.”

While she has always been involved in creative pursuits, jewellery making is something new for Grace, who studied music composition at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, as well as film music at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

While her career took a detour in the opposite direction for a while with a short-lived stint in finance, Grace has returned to her creative roots with a range of arts-based projects including Graffiti Ore.

“I'm very much one of those jack-of-all-trades people,” she said.

“Graffiti Ore started as one of a few creative side projects while I was attempting a very short-lived career in finance. I’ve now left the office environment for good, and I’m doing a range of creative projects full-time - working on sound and music for films, collaborative music performance projects and video/ projection art.

“I have always been involved in more time-based arts (video art/sound art) but have always been constantly doing craft whether it be origami or paper mâché or drawing pictures in MS Paint at work. I just like making things.

“Jewellery making is something totally new for me (but) I love every step of the process, from scavenging for paint to meticulously applying the resin. Seeing the transformation take place as the material is repurposed into something beautiful.

“What makes them really special is not just the history of the pieces but also the diverse, naturally forming patterns and how they can resemble opals or nebulas or rainbows.

“It’s amazing starting with what seems like a chunk of dirt and carving into it to find hundreds of layers of unexpected colours. And to think that each colour was once a mural or tag that existed for a brief time on a wall and is now getting a new life as jewellery.”

Blend the crease area well with a clean blending brush. Next, apply a little colour to the crease using the same blending brush, I love Rule and Passionate, apply these sparingly as the idea is to create an interesting fade of colour, not a dominant colour. This can also look great smudged into the lower lash-line colour to create the colour fade all around the eye.

Use an angle brush to apply a matte black eyeshadow along the top lash-line, you can stop at the edge of your outer lash-line, or you can wing it up and out a little depending on your mood or the look you are going for. Add a little of the black shadow to the outer lower lashline until it meets with the outer top lash-line.

Either use the same angle brush or an eyeshadow brush to blend the black into the lighter eyelid colour.

Notice every colour is gently smudged and blended into the previous, you want to avoid having any obvious lines or colour changes. The idea is to go from the black on the lash-line to a darker shade on the lid to a warmer lighter colour in the crease.

Add a touch of highlighter along the brow light and in the inner corners of the eye. Try avoiding anything too white or light as this looks very stark and obvious against the dark shadow.

Instead, try soft golds, pinks or beiges as your highlight colour.

Apply copious amounts of mascara and a half lash rather than a full strip lash to avoid looking over the top. Now use a cotton pad and eye makeup remover to clean away any dark shadow which has fallen beneath the eye and apply the rest of your makeup for a flawless clean Smokey eye.

There is something very seductive about dark, smouldering eyes. When done well they tend to command attention drawing observers in. There is, however, a very fine line between looking like a sultry goddess and a racoon. Try my tips and tricks to mastering the art of a smokey eye makeup.

I always start a smokey eye look with the eyes first as this allows me to clean away any eyeshadow that has fallen onto the face during the application. This can be a little hard to look at, as to begin with you have these huge heavy dark eyes with no foundation.

Persistence here is key, keep going with the eye makeup until it is complete before starting your base.

I love Mac Paint as a base for all eye makeup as it is a waterproof cream shadow which prevents your eyeshadow from pooling into creases if you get sweaty or oily. You can use a neutral colour like Bare Canvas so it won’t affect the colour of your chosen shadow. Apply the paint all over the eyelid and out past the outer corners of your eye. Blend well to ensure the base is smooth and even before applying any eyeshadow.

For almost half a century, the Newcastle After Hours Medical Service has been taking care of patients whose health concerns just won’t wait until the weekend is over.

The oldest medical deputising service in the Newcastle region, it was established in 1969 by Peter Court and John Moore, who saw a need to provide a coordinated workforce of general practitioners (GPs) who could carry out house calls for patients who needed urgent but not emergency - medical care outside of normal practice hours.

Initially operating only on weekends, the service expanded over time to include weeknight and public holiday cover, as well as an after-hours clinic for those who have ready access to transport options and don’t need to see a doctor in their own home.

Peter said he was proud of the way the service had developed during the past 48 years, growing from an offhand request for one GP to a service that offers medical care to tens of thousands of people each year.

“I was an insurance representative, and in those days I sold mainly to doctors, GPs, and one of the doctors asked me one weekend if I knew a lot of doctors, could I find a doctor to work for him for the weekend, to be on-call for him,” he said.

“And I did, I knew a doctor who was a registrar at the Royal Newcastle Hospital who would cover him. Once that happened, that GP told other doctors, and we had more and more and more doctors ringing to say could you cover us as well? (continued next page) ►

certainly an advantage to single parents who don’t want to take all their kids out, an advantage to people who can’t get into a doctor; there’s a lot of those.”

The bulk billed service has helped countless people over the years and has been invaluable in reducing the number of patients unnecessarily presenting to hospital emergency rooms.

Peter said that despite the rapid growth in after-hours services now operating in the Hunter, Newcastle After Hours Medical Service would continue to offer valuable medical care for patients in need for many years to come.

“If we stopped (operating) it would immediately dump 60,000 people onto the hospital system to triage and treat,” he said.

“For every call that comes in here, we probably see one in three because a lot of them just need to be triaged back to their own doctor. We also have a very busy afterhours clinic at Broadmeadow each evening and all weekends and public holidays and that takes the overload from the house calls if we can’t get to someone reasonably quickly we try to get them into the after-hours medical centre at Broadmeadow.

“Everything is bulk billed, up to and after midnight, and in the clinic as well, and it has been since we started.

“We’ve been here for 48 years, and we intend to be here a lot longer.” ■

“Doctors were obliged to be on-call for their patients 24 hours a day in those days, so in a practice, they would nominate one doctor to cover the rest, or an individual doctor would have to cover himself.

“We developed from there, from going for weekends only with one doctor driving himself in his own car, we went into weeknights and then we started to supply our own cars and our drivers for the doctors and get more doctors to work.”

More than 15 RACGP certified locum doctors currently work for Newcastle After Hours Medical Service, deputising for around 110 GPs in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie council areas.

Peter said the service was used by a wide range of people, with most patients referred to it by their regular GP. “We see a lot of children. We have a lot of single parents in particular, people with no transport, elderly people, nursing homes as well as private hospitals and then other people who are just plain sick who either cannot get into their doctor in a required amount of time or have a problem that needs to be treated basically as soon as possible,” he said.

“Most of our doctors we cover for refer their patients to us direct, they ring their doctor, and they say if you need to call after hours please call this number.

“They can access us from 4pm in the afternoon right through till morning. It’s

Learning from the Kids Chronic diseases are becoming more common and are driven largely by unhealthy lifestyle behaviours including a poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

Various interventions have been introduced to slow the growing numbers of people with problems like heart disease, diabetes and cancer, with varying degrees of success. No single approach works for everyone so it’s important to have a variety of evidence-based strategies available from which people can choose. School-based interventions are being used in some areas of health and have been successful in increasing children’s physical activity levels and improving their dietary choices. This has extended in some areas to include the children’s families. The children are provided with health education to pass on to their families to encourage lifestyle changes. Researchers assessed the effectiveness of this type of intervention in a group of school-aged children and their mothers.

The trial involved grade eight students from a number of schools in Sri Lanka and their mothers. Students were assigned to an intervention or control group for 12 months.

The intervention delivered tailored education to the children in special classes. They were taught about chronic disease risk factors and were encouraged to come up with ways to address them. They identified risk factors relevant to their families, were encouraged to discuss these with their families and document

changes in their mothers’ behaviour over the course of the study. They were also trained to provide feedback to their families addressing their progress over the year. The control group did not receive a program. The outcomes measured at the end of the study period included mothers’ weight, body mass index (BMI), self-reported physical activity levels, diet and food purchased for the household.

At the end of the 12 months, mothers in the intervention group showed lower weight and BMI, increased physical activity levels and a decrease in household purchasing of unhealthy foods such as biscuits and ice cream compared to the mothers of the controls.

These results suggest that an intervention delivered to school-aged children can lead to improvements for them and their families. Educating children about healthy behaviours is also important early in life to encourage the continuation of these behaviours into adulthood. With more evidence, this is a potentially effective program that is scalable to implement in primary schools and high schools to encourage better health for the whole family and hopefully lower the risk of some behaviour-driven chronic diseases.

Eating Smaller Meals More Often Meal timings, quantity and type of food consumed at different times of the day can influence food intake and weight change.

The time of day at which we eat and how frequently we eat over the course of a day are two factors that are thought to affect weight loss efforts. Different diets propose different approaches to meal frequency and timings, and there is some debate as to which approach is best for weight loss.

Researchers analysed data on the dietary habits of over 5000 people between the ages of 40 to 59 years, investigating the association between meal frequency and weight loss. The data included information on when and how often they ate and general dietary habits and food intake. The analysis showed that people who ate on at least six occasions over a 24 hour period consumed less total energy and had a diet containing more vitamins and minerals. Those who ate four or fewer times a day tended to be fatter and drank more alcohol at night.

As this was an observational study, the link between eating more frequently and weight loss cannot be confirmed. Healthier people in this study tended to eat more often, consume healthier foods and drink less alcohol of an evening. Eating small meals more frequently may help promote feelings of fullness and make binge eating less likely. It may also help to control cravings and prevent huge amounts being eaten in a single meal.

Robotic Technology in Newcastle WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

The medical industry is constantly developing, with breakthroughs in research and advancements in technology creating an ever-changing landscape for patients and practitioners. One of the doctors on the cutting edge of the improvements being made in orthopaedic surgery is Newcastlebased surgeon Dr Stuart Mackenzie.

Specialising in hip and knee surgery and trauma surgery, and with a strong interest in difficult and revision hip and knee replacements, Dr Mackenzie is leading the way in the use of robotic technology during orthopaedic procedures in the Hunter.

The University of Newcastle graduate completed his training locally through the Australian Orthopaedic Association program and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (Ortho) in January 2011.

Since then he has spent time honing his surgical skills both locally and overseas, with a year-long Fellowship in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the University of Alberta and the Royal Alexandra and Misericordia hospitals in Edmonton, Canada.

He went on to complete the prestigious Exeter Hip Fellowship at one of the leading hip replacement hospitals in the world - the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter, England – before spending six months working in the USA at the Shriners Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

Since returning to Australia, Dr Mackenzie has established a firm footing in the Hunter, working in both the public and private hospital systems at John Hunter Hospital and Lingard Private Hospital.

“I was attracted to surgery in general because I enjoy the procedural side of medicine as well as the patient interaction,” Dr Mackenzie said.

“Orthopaedic surgery was particularly appealing because of the very clear and concrete progression from problem to treatment to solution.

“Patients can easily see the benefit that they gain from an operation and are often very grateful for the huge change it makes in their lives. I find this very satisfying.”

Keen to stay abreast of the latest advancements in his field, in October 2016 Dr Mackenzie became the first surgeon in Newcastle to perform robot-assisted orthopaedic surgery.

After undertaking specialised training in Sydney, Dr Mackenzie used the Stryker Mako robotic system at Lingard Hospital to successfully complete the region’s first robot- assisted partial knee replacement and the first robot-assisted total hip replacement.

“The orthopaedic industry is changing very quickly and not always for the better,” Dr Mackenzie said.

“The use of new technologies such as MRI and threedimensional imaging for better imaging of joints has been very helpful in diagnosing some patients and in planning surgery.

Using computer technology known as navigation to improve the accuracy of positioning artificial joints in surgery has also been a big advance. The extension of this to using robotic technology is probably the single biggest advance that I have seen.

“I have been using robotic-assisted surgery since October 2016. I was the first surgeon to perform robotic-assisted surgery in Newcastle.

“For each type of operation, I have had to go to Sydney to do a course involving both the theory of using the robot and

practice using the robot for performing surgery. Without doing this training, a surgeon is not able to have access to the robot for surgery.”

There are a number of steps involved in using the robotic technology for the procedure. A Computer Tomography (CT) scan is taken of the diseased joint and used to generate a 3D virtual model of the patient’s unique anatomy.

After being uploaded into the Mako system software, the model is used to create a personalised pre-operative plan that allows the position of the prosthetic components to be calculated to within 0.2 millimetres of their ideal location.

During surgery, Dr Mackenzie uses the patient-specific plan to guide the Mako robotic-arm while positioning the prosthesis components, providing a more accurate placement and alignment of the implant than can be achieved with traditional methods.

Dr Mackenzie said there were many advantages to using robotic technology during orthopaedic surgery, with the technique able to be used for both total and partial knee replacements, as well as a total hip replacement through either a posterior or direct anterior approach.

“There are a number of benefits of robotic-assisted surgery,” he said.

“It uses a 3D computer model to greatly increase the accuracy with which the surgeon can plan a joint replacement.

This plan can then be easily adjusted during the operation if necessary based on further information gathered about the ligaments and other structures during the surgery.

“The robot then assists the surgeon to be much more accurate with preparing the bone and placing the artificial joint components than traditional techniques.

“We know that, especially with the positioning of the cup in a hip replacement, we’re actually not nearly as good at doing that accurately as we’d like to think. There have been many studies that have shown that using traditional methods; we position the cup outside what we call a safe zone about 30 percent of the time.

“The robot has been shown to be much more accurate at positioning that cup where it should be and where we want it to be, which should lead to a decreased risk of complications like a dislocation.”

While the use of robotic technology is still quite new in Australia - the first knee replacement was only completed two years ago in April 2015, with the first hip surgery undertaken a year later – Dr Mackenzie believes patients will increasingly use it for many years to come.

Plastic Surgeon or Cosmetic Surgeon?

The issue of whether properly trained doctors are performing cosmetic operations is back under the spotlight since the recent death of Jean Huang. Ms Huang died at the Sydney Medi Beauty Clinic during a breast procedure by an overseas national without any Australian medical qualifications.

Is there a difference between a Plastic Surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon in Australia? Within the general public and even those who work within the health industries, many do not know the important differences between cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons.

Intuitively it makes sense that one would seek out a cosmetic surgeon to perform an operation with a purely cosmetic or aesthetic focus. However, the term cosmetic surgeon is not regulated and does not represent a recognised Specialist qualification.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is responsible for a National Registration and Accreditation Scheme across Australia to ensure only those suitably trained and qualified are registered as Surgeons. The Australian Medical Council (AMC) also aims to uphold training and education standards in order to protect the health of the Australian community. Neither the AMC nor AHPRA recognise the term cosmetic surgeon. This means that the public has no guarantee of training and qualifications standards when they allow someone calling themselves a cosmetic surgeon to operate on them.

In September this year, the Sunday Telegraph reported that medical graduates were calling themselves cosmetic surgeons after a half day course with breast enhancements and anti-wrinkle injections.

This is in contrast to the training requirements within Plastic Surgery. In order to call yourself a Plastic Surgeon, you must have completed 8-12 years of surgical training in addition to your basic medical degree and be accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). All surgeons must have FRACS after their name to be registered with AHPRA and the AMC and to be recognised

by Medicare Australia.

The letters FRACS represents training to Australian standards and thereby offers some reassurance of surgical safety for patients.

While not all of Plastic Surgery training is cosmetically focused, it involves years of working through difficult reconstructive problems, all of which have an aesthetic component. This facilitates the high level of knowledge, skill, and judgement necessary to perform primarily reconstructive and purely cosmetic operations.

So what should you look for when choosing your surgeon? FRACS (Plas) after their name is a vital start. Memberships with the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) or the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) also indicate that your surgeon is a fully qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon.

When choosing your surgeon check they have current registration on the AHPRA website www.ahpra.gov.au to ensure you are in the besttrained hands possible.

DO I HAVE TO GO TO COURT? WORDS VICTORIA BLAKELEY – Farrar Gesini Dunn

As family lawyers, we often get asked if Court is the only option after separation. Unfortunately, there is a misconception that if a relationship breaks down the only way to sort things out is to involve the Family Court.

In fact, the opposite is true. In relation to parenting matters (previously known as “custody disputes”), separated parents are often better able to work out what arrangements are best for their children. In many cases, parents are able to work this out without the intervention of the court.

In any event, if an agreement is not possible between the two parents, the law requires parents to attend mediation (except in rare circumstances, such as where family violence is a factor) before asking the Court to get involved.

In relation to property matters (division of family assets), even if a Court process is commenced, the Court generally requires mediation as the first step in the process.

Without going anywhere near the Court, there are a number of options available to parents, couples and families wishing to reach an amicable agreement about their family law matter. These include:

1. Mediation without lawyers: Numerous organisations provide this service, (many for free), and this can be a great way to engage with your former partner and (with the assistance of a mediator), come up with a draft agreement.

2. Collaborative law: An interest-based process where each partner is represented by a collaborative lawyer. Both parties agree not to go to Court, but to work out an agreed outcome.

3. Mediation with legal assistance (also known as conciliation or facilitation): The mediator is often a senior family lawyer, or barrister (or sometimes a retired judge or Court Registrar), who is able to give their input to help reach an appropriate solution. Parties negotiate with the view to reaching an agreement.

4. Negotiation between lawyers: If you do not feel comfortable negotiating with your former partner, a lawyer can assist with this process. If you are comfortable, a round table conference with everyone involved might be a good way to iron out any issues you have.

There are always ways of doing things differently and without involving the Court, which allows the family to agree upon an outcome that works best for them, rather than having an outcome imposed upon them. It also allows the parents to consider options which are outside what a Court would Order, which may be better suited to the family’s particular circumstances.

IS SELF-ESTEEM OVER-RATED? WORDS ANNE WARD – Mindinsight

Wikipedia defines self-esteem as an emotional judgement that a person makes about their own worth. A google search of self-esteem reveals 65 million hits, suggesting how widespread interest in this concept is. However, how people feel about themselves wasn’t considered a serious question until the early 1960’s, when the self-esteem movement took roots in American culture.

Self-esteem gained momentum in the 1980’s after John Vasconcellos, a US politician, began promoting the idea that low self-esteem was the cause of crime, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and school underachievement. He believed that by boosting childrens’ self-esteem, they would ultimately live happier lives.

Vasconcellos' ideas were adopted into mainstream attitudes around how children should be educated and raised.

Parents began to take on the notion that building their children's self-esteem

was critical to their future. Self-esteem became a household word.

The United States emerged from WW2 as an economic powerhouse, with rising levels of wealth in the general population. This gave birth to the rise of consumerism in parallel with the self-esteem movement. It wasn’t long before the two became linked as vehicles to success, with marketing companies promoting consumption as a kind of panacea for making everyone feel better about themselves. Philip Cushman published an article (available on google) in 1990, titled Why the Self is Empty, in which he describes how companies began promoting the idea that we all need retail “spakfilla” (consumer goods and services) to make us more attractive, healthy, wealthy, happy and successful.

the idea that somehow, the grass is greener on the other side, and if we are not happy and successful there is something wrong with us.

Recent research is showing the link between screen time and increased anxiety and depression, especially in young people.

In 2003 Psychology Professor Roy Baumeister exposed the link between selfesteem and happiness as a myth. Baumeister stated that efforts to boost self-esteem in the classroom did not improve academic performance, that bullies can, in fact, have an inflated sense of self, that high self-esteem does not lessen a tendency toward violence, alcohol or drugs. Baumeister also concluded that a heightened sense of self-worth could lead to a sense of entitlement in which people demand preferential treatment over and above others. In describing these characteristics, the term narcissism, once used in psychiatric and psychology circles, has now entered mainstream conversation.

The promise of “you can have it all” seems to be a double-edged sword with many young people feeling anxious and depressed because they don’t seem to be able to reach the lofty heights of body image, popularity and happiness that are promoted as the ‘holy grail’ of reaching one’s potential. Could it be that self-esteem has been over-promoted as a pathway to happiness?

One of the problems in regarding selfesteem as a goal is that it involves an emotional evaluation of oneself – in other

words, a feeling. Our feelings fluctuate. They can be influenced by our mood, sleep, the weather and our relationships. It’s good to be aware of our feelings, but they are not meant to be a benchmark for where we are at in life.

Also, if we overly focus on how we are feeling, it can lead to inward preoccupation, which can fuel self-doubt and worry.

Rather than promoting self-esteem as a universal social vaccine, Baumeister recommended careful use of self-esteem, suggesting that praise is better used as a reward for socially desirable behaviour and self-improvement. Baumeister also emphasised other expressions of self: selfacceptance, self-awareness, self-respect and self-control, as attitudes and behaviours that build a more balanced, healthy sense of self. These other expressions of self-involve personal effort and do not rely on material possessions or the approval of others to feel ok about oneself.

Perhaps with less pressure on achieving an ideal future, we might be freer to take life one step at a time, with an eye on the future, but also being able to savour moments of being ordinary. ■
