INSIDE INTOUCH

From the Editors...

Rather than measuring ourselves against unrealistic, flawed goals, what about the possibility that where we are at in life is ok?

Set within the spectacle of the Fortuna Spiegeltent, Blanc de Blanc features an internationally renowned cast of dancers, acrobats and entertainers who create a feast for the eyes, ears and minds with their daring moves, risqué acts and vintage glamour. The stunning show commences a two week season this month, and in this issue, we speak with Director and Creator Scott Maidment who describes the show as a “circus cabaret based around the kind of fun and frivolity of champagne.” This show will be a sell-out event so don’t delay in booking your spot at this over-18’s event. Liann Taffe knows the fear and pain caused by domestic violence. As a caseworker at Wallsend’s Warlga Ngurra Women and Children’s Refuge and having freed herself from her own situation, Liann now dedicates her life to supporting others in need and raising awareness of the issue of domestic violence. Liann is this month’s Jets Local Hero – sharing her inspiring story on page 30. It’s one of the most enduring classical ballet performances of all time featuring one of the most recognisable scores of music written by famed Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The renowned Moscow Ballet 'La Classique' will present the fairytale masterpiece of The Nutcracker next month, but before they do we speak with lead soloist Vadim Pakhomov. The production has received rave reviews around the world, with critics calling it the best version of The Nutcracker they had ever seen, with “all of the fairytale enchantment and beauty one could wish for.” As we go to print Surfest is wrapping up, the uncomfortably hot days are fewer, and the leaves outside our offices are starting to fall from the trees heralding the arrival of Autumn. A CALL TO ARMS for Live Music Lovers... Come Out and See a Show! WORDS BRIAN LIZOTTE - Lizotte's, Newcastle All over Australia, Live music venues are disappearing. A meeting was held last month at the Edward, passionate advocates including Newcastle venue owners, booking agents all dedicated to supporting original music and maintaining the cities live music scene. In a room full of supporters, legendary Newcastle guitarist Grant Walmsley took people on a journey into the not so distant past. “My great uncle was a bass player at the Palais in the 1940's – now it’s a KFC. That fell on someone’s watch. What’s next? The Cambridge? The Wicko? The Lass?,” he told a round-table meeting about the future of the city’s live music scene on Friday. He also talked about writing a song that went to number 1 which he played for the first time at the Cambridge. I was thrilled to be asked, and it was great to see so much passion for something I have loved all my life. If you are a fan of live music and love Newcastle vibrant nightlife, the best thing you can do is come out and see shows when they are on. Newcastle rocks so lets keep it that way. Anyone stuck for ideas, over the next few months we have the most amazing musos in town with Live and Local every Wednesday night with amazing local musicians honing their craft; The Necks, Timberwolf, Damien Leith, Brewster Brothers, Steve Poltz, Gord Bamford, Dragon, Canned Heat, Newton Faulkner, Mental As Anything, Bob Starkie from Skyhooks, The Whitlams, Bondi Cigars, Richard Clapton, Mark Wilkinson, 19-Twenty, Amber Lawrence, Diesel and The Turner Brown Band at Lizottes and plenty more. Lots of shows at great venues all over Newcastle. Keep an eye on your great local gig guides and head to a show. Visit www.lizottes.com.au

Merewether Ocean Baths is a favourite spot for Novocastrians, but few of us have had the chance or inclination to see it bathed in the magical light of dawn, until now. Local photographer and storyteller Brydie Piaf has combined her love of the ocean with her unique documentary eye to create an extraordinary book and exhibition about people who greet the sea before the sun each day. The Sunrise Swimmers of Merewether Ocean Baths is a collection of portraits, seascapes and stories documenting the regular early morning swimmers of Newcastle's iconic Merewether Ocean Baths. The Sunrise Swimmers is a celebration of these people, and of the saltwater life. The exhibition is on until 17 April, 2018 in the Local History Lounge at the War Memorial Cultural Centre, Laman Street, Newcastle. It is hosted in partnership with Newcastle Region Library as part of its program to highlight Newcastle stories. Brydie Piaf's work has been featured in print, online and is held in private collections. As a freelance photographer and writer now calling Newcastle home, she has the opportunity to explore many of the city's favourite ocean pools and beaches while indulging in her 'mermaid tendencies'. "With a love for the human story and those tiny ordinary moments that make up our day, story telling and documentary photography was a natural place for me to fall into," said Ms Piaf. "Capturing the moment as it is felt, whether big or small, combined with a few written words is a favourite way to do just

that. With a combination of trust, loves of light, and a good strong coffee, connections are made and stories are told." The Sunrise Swimmers of Merewether Ocean Baths is Brydie Piaf's first solo exhibition and book. She lives with her partner and three children, who, she said "have all learnt it’s quicker just to say yes to a photo." Meet the Artist Events Meet photographer and storyteller Brydie Piaf for a chat about her work documenting The Sunrise Swimmers of Merewether Ocean Baths. Two sessions: 11am-12pm, Saturday 3 March and Friday 9 March. Held at the Local History Lounge, second floor, War Memorial Cultural Centre, Laman Street. Community Event - Sunrise Swim Come be a part of the Merewether Ocean Baths sunrise and sea-loving community by celebrating the start of the day with a swim. that for them this will be the first time that they've played with the mandolin – it’s usually the case with most of the chamber music partners and orchestras that I play with so it’s something that I encounter very often. I like the discovery element in the encounter.” Having re-established the mandolin as a classical instrument, the Beersheba-born Avi relishes that moment when players within traditional ensembles suddenly realise the versatility and sheer volume of an instrument that for generations endured an unjustified reputation as being the province of amateurs only. And if it’s new to the players, it is to most audience members too. “Wherever I play around the world, I feel that for most of the people it's absolutely the first time and there is a great curiosity and great anticipation which is wonderful for the concert atmosphere. No spoken introductions can make that better, that moment of discovery!” Avi’s own discovery of the mandolin occurred as part of after-school activities. “There was this youth mandolin orchestra in Beersheba where kids aged from 8 to 18 used to come together to play arrangements of classical pieces for mandolin. A neighbour who was older than I was played the mandolin himself in this orchestra and it was through him that I was introduced to the instrument,” said Avital, who felt an immediate connection. “It’s a very intuitive instrument and a fundamentally simple WORDS MARTIN BUZACOTT - Musica Viva concept. You put a string on a piece of wood, or on a wooden box, and you pluck it with your hand or a piece of wood or When Israeli mandolinist Avi Avital meets with the Giocoso whatever, and then the sound comes out. I think for kids Quartet at the first rehearsal for their upcoming Musica Viva especially for the kind of curious and restless kid that I was tour, he has a very clear idea of what he wants to tell them - something that gives you such an immediate reaction is very about his instrument. appealing.” Absolutely nothing. So rare though was the mandolin in classical music that his “The mandolin speaks for itself,” the 39-year-old says from Berlin where he’s been based for the past eight years. “I'm sure first teacher was actually a violinist, the Russian-trained Simcha

Nathanson. Surrounded by standard classical instruments, the young Avi soon realised that the sound of his mandolin couldn't resonate enough to project beyond the ensembles with whom he was playing. But then he encountered the Tel Aviv luthier Arik Kerman. “Arik had the same taste as my colleagues and me at the time, which was to bring the mandolin to the front of the stage in mainstream concerts. And his goal was to make a new kind of mandolin which was louder and which could fill a concerthall, made out of the best wood, just like a violin-maker would construct his violin out of the best material available. Arik did years of development, and he considered our input - the players who played these instruments.” For the past 20 years, Avi’s been playing the same mandolin made by Arik, and unless he’s performing with the big symphony orchestras, it doesn't need any amplification, even in the most imposing halls like the Philharmonie in Berlin. Now Avi performs concerts in the widest possible range of genres. “For me, it's very organic. Obviously, most of my concerts are in the classical world, but I have played a lot of klezmer too, and I do play world music, especially Middle Eastern and Balkan, just because these are things that I know and have always been interested in. And so switching comes naturally.” And just as with performers, he never sets conditions for composers who write for the mandolin. “I don't want to give them any clues because most of the time they come up with things that I haven't thought about myself. When I receive the score, I'll spend a few minutes trying to figure it out, and then I'll realise, oh, that’s interesting, I've discovered something new!” See Avi Avital, and the Giocoso Quartet live at the Newcastle Conservatorium on Thursday, 12 April at 7:30pm. Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars this month.

A Child’s World in Pictures

25 years of illustration the art of Anne Spudvilas

On Display 21 February - 14 April Illustrations from the multi award winning artist and children’s book illustrator Anne Spudvilas. Includes works from picture books by well-known Australian authors such as Isobelle Carmody, Margaret Wild, Bryce Courtney and Gary Crew.

Aries 21 March - 20 April The New Year was about planting seeds, and now, you can enjoy the fruits of your labour. As the month progresses, you increasingly establish a position of power - reaching a zenith around the 18th’s New Moon. Whatever you want to build on, this is the time and place. Your birthday is on the horizon, but you’ll be starting to celebrate the moment your birthday season begins.

Taurus 21 April - 20 May Logic and instinct have had their differences lately, but they finally reach a truce - resulting in peace of mind. Many Taureans find themselves in an emotional state of grace, bordering on spiritual ascendancy. Friends and family could have something special in store for you, so trust them. But as old habits die hard, trusting someone else’s plans may take getting used to. Succumb and enjoy.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June Last month’s uncertainty and chaos continues, thanks to Gemini’s nemesis - retrograding Mercury - so steer clear of launching new projects until April. On the plus side, this month is an ideal time to reassess plans that didn’t work out the first time. Fine-tune your CV or add bells and whistles to the proposal you thought you had finished. You can always improve upon that initial flash of genius.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July Unexpected visitors or certain friends could become the bane of your life. Although you might feel you can cope with whoever turns up, certain blasts from the past may still have the power to blind side. Not a problem. Simply charm, and then disarm. You now know what (or who) you can live without, which is one step closer to discovering what makes you truly happy.

Leo 23 July - 22 August Mercury’s back-pedalling after the 24th could mean your finances are pushed to the extreme but don’t fret. In recent times, you’ve doled out much monetary kindness and now is the time to call some of these favours in. If you can’t guilttrip people into submission, you can at least ensure they never dare ask for your financial help again.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September Mercury misbehaves badly, bringing confusion to all. This planet rules communication, negotiations, buying, selling, travel, contracts and documents, etc. - all of which are affected when Mercury slows down after the 24th. So, if possible, complete any important transactions before then. Also, make sure that all electronic files are backed up. Better safe than sorry.

Libra 23 September - 22 October With Mercury doing a back flip in your romance sector this month, there’s not much happening here but, surprisingly, you shouldn’t feel lonely or unhappy. Instead, you can look forward to being sheltered from the daily grind, with plenty of elbow room for introspection. Don’t be surprised by sudden revelations - you live by your intuition, so use it to your advantage.

Scorpio 23 October - 21 November This month sees you charging ahead, with little regard for formalities. So does this mean you’re making progress, or just being reckless? Some find your zeal tough going; others are delighted by your passion. When you’re this determined, it can be difficult giving up a dream or two. You needn’t always multi-task, Scorpio; just work on one project at a time.

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December March is a grinder of a month for getting work done, but stay focused and claim the bounty. It’s just a case of powering into top gear and crashing through self-doubts. Both your social and work diaries are loaded to the hilt. Blame it on a combination of power planets, hurling you into the spotlight. There you’ll be - at the centre of attention, and loving it.

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January It seems that very few are willing to reveal their true feelings or intentions this month - least of all what they want from you. Be warned in advance - the most taboo subjects in any relationship or business enterprise are certain to be those linked with money or joint finances. Declare a closed-wallet policy. That should at least keep financial predators at bay.

Aquarius 20 January - 18 February Though you may be tempted to side with life’s cynics, staying objective is the best policy. Your head’s in the wrong space for others’ dramas. After the 24th, escape to a quiet destination - even if only for a few days. Until then, your mobile runs hot and work stacks up. While your inclination is to stay in control, that may become extremely difficult when that gentle trickle of obligations turns into a torrent.

TANYA OBREZA was born in Slovenija and emigrated to Australia with her parents as a young girl. It was during her first visit to England that Tanya was introduced to astrology, and in 1980 she gained her London Faculty of Astrological Studies qualifications. Over the years, Tanya has established an extensive and wide-ranging international following, mostly due to her reassuring, down to earth presence.

Everything and anything - thought-provoking books, study, fascinating people, provocative conversations, mind-expanding journeys - even problems and disagreements - can be viewed through the lens of “discovery”. In the meantime, after March 24 communicator Mercury does a back flip. Watch what you say, because blunt remarks could turn into memorable gaffes. The good news? Cover Story

BLANC DE BLANC A Feast for the Eyes, Ears and Mind WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer

There’s a certain headiness that comes with drinking champagne... a glamorous, almost indulgent quality imbued into every bubble of the shimmering, sparkling drop. Imagine taking this intoxicating sensation and turning it into a feast for all the senses, and you’ll start to understand the concept behind the smash-hit production BLANC DE BLANC.

Created by renowned production company Strut and Fret, Blanc de Blanc combines classic cabaret with amazing aerial manoeuvres and a thumping soundtrack in a performance that is sure to infatuate and delight Newcastle audiences this month. Set within the spectacle of the Fortuna Spiegeltent, Blanc de Blanc features an internationally renowned cast of dancers, acrobats and entertainers who create a feast for the eyes, ears and minds with their daring moves, risqué acts and vintage glamour. Director and creator Scott Maidment described the show as a “circus cabaret based around the kind of fun and frivolity of champagne”. “The show sort of mirrors the feeling of when you’re having a nice glass of champagne… you think you’re all smooth and sophisticated, you sit down, and you taste the champagne, and it’s all very la-de-dah,” he said. “But then after a few glasses and a good night out, it all turns a bit crazy, sometimes a bit debaucherous and a bit of a heady mess, and that’s really the shape of the show overall. “It kind of mirrors, not just champagne but a good party as well and I think that’s why the audience loves it, because people essentially love to have a great party. “It is risqué, it’s 18+, there is nudity in the show but it’s not like sexy or smutty nudity, it’s more like crazy fun when the 14 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

party goes a little bit too far, that’s kind of the feeling of it. “I think the ambience of the show has been a hit for all demographics, it’s a great date night show but it’s also the show you can take your mum to – but she’ll be a bit surprised. “I can tell you you’ll see some things you’ve never seen before.” Originally created at the request of the Sydney Opera House two years ago, the show has become an international smash hit, with a successful season on London’s West End. It has been touring consistently since that time, with an almost month-long season scheduled for Newcastle from March 27 – April 15. “Basically the show started two years ago, and we opened at the Sydney Opera House, and it played there for two months, and then it went to London and played there for three months in London’s West End and then we’ve been touring this show ever since,” Scott said. “I was asked by the Opera House to create a summer show. I thought I could make something around the concept of champagne. “I’d just been working on Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour, and I met one of the choreographers on that, Kevin Maher, and asked him to come along with me, so all the choreography is done by him. “There are ten cast members in the show, and they come from Japan, from LA, from Vegas, from Paris, there’s two

Australians in the cast, and they’re all specialists in their field, some of the dancers have been touring with Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj and people like that, some of the comedians have performed in long seasons in Vegas and comedy clubs in New York – it’s really people at the top of their game. “We’ve been lucky enough because the energy of the show has been so successful, the cast really enjoy the show, and so it’s pretty much, with the exception of maybe one or two people, the original cast. “I think it’s a testament to the success of the show that people want to keep coming out, performers love to come to Australia, a lot of them have hardly been here before, so it’s exciting to get to travel Australia and show what they’ve been working on for the last couple of years.” Among the cast members are the husband and wife team of aerialist performer Hampus Jansson and dancer Milena Straczynski, who provide one of the highlights of the show. “He’s Swedish, and she’s from Miami, they met quite a few years ago on a show, and when they were on tour last year in Brisbane they actually got married,” Scott said. “They’re an amazing couple, and they love the show. Milena is an incredible dancer; she used to tour with Pitbull and a lot of well-known artists. Hampus, he looks amazing, he’s super strong, and he’s blonde, but he’s also a really funny clown as well, so they’re a good mix. “They’ve got an amazing aerial routine in Blanc de Blanc that goes in and out of a hot tub, and so they’re wet and flying in the air.

“A lot of audiences do think that their act is one of the highlights of the show.” Another highlight is the setting of the show itself. Dutch for ‘mirror tent’, the Spiegeltent originated in Belgium in the late 19th century as a travelling entertainment venue. While this is not the first time Newcastle audiences have had the chance to visit the travelling venue, the exquisite Fortuna Spiegeltent being used for Blanc de Blanc – an extravagant big top decorated with mirrors, stained glass, velvet and brocade with a beautifully glamorous old-world feel – is

different to the tent brought out to Newcastle last year for the production of Velvet with Marcia Hines. “They’re not really like a tent at all if you go into it, it’s nothing like a circus tent with canvas and things like that. It’s basically a wooden structure that has lots of stained glass panels, velvet seating, velvet curtains, there’s mirrors all around them,” Scott said. “They started off in the 1940's touring around Europe at dance venues and basically because of the acoustics of the wood, and because of the amazing atmosphere, they’ve been touring around Europe since. “Then around ten years ago they came out as a really special occasion to Australia, probably for the Sydney Festival or something like that, but since then we’ve been developing it, we work really closely with the owners and each year we bring a tent out. “This is a different tent that we’ve bought out (compared to the one used for Velvet last year), this one is called the Fortuna. It’s actually a little bit bigger, there’s very different façade, internally it feels very different, and because Blanc de Blanc is a very different experience to the disco of Marcia Hines, the whole show is a different experience. “If you liked it for Velvet then you should come and check out the next edition.” Scott said transporting and setting up the Spiegeltent provided a giant logistical challenge, however, the reactions of the audiences and the popularity of the venue ensure it is worth the effort. “The tent comes out in two shipping containers, it takes two months for them to get to Australia,” he said. “Then when we get to Newcastle and we fly in two Dutch guys from Holland, they land in Newcastle, we work with half a dozen local guys, build the tent over two days, and then the Dutch guys fly back home.

“We then do the shows for a month and then when the tent’s ready to move on, the guys fly back out from Holland, pull it down, move it to the next city and then the adventure continues.

“It’s crazy, it’s a very expensive exercise, and that’s why it’s special, you’re not going to see this venue every day, it’s not like you’ll knock it up for a one-off experience. That’s why we’re performing for almost a month - because the logistics are immense and we want as many people to experience the beautiful surrounds of the tent as possible.

“Newcastle audiences have been really responsive to the Spiegeltent, and that’s why we keep bringing shows back. “It’s a risky business to do it, but when the audiences respond, and they have a good time, and they buy lots of tickets you think, OK it’s worth it, they’re loving it. It’s exciting that the audiences have been so responsive. “This show [Blanc de Blanc] is designed to play in this sort of space, there’s an amazing set with staircases, and there’s a spa bath and things like that in the middle of the Spiegeltent. “The environment of the tent itself is so beautiful and so exciting that it really does amp up the atmosphere not just of the audience but also of the performers in the tent.” ►

(continued) Scott is certainly no stranger to the logistical challenges of touring a production around Australia and Asia, having set up Strut and Fret more than 20 years ago to do just that. Prior to that he took theatrical performances of Shakespeare plays across the country, while from a performance perspective he also had his own unicycling show. These days Strut and Fret also create and produces its own award-winning shows, such as Blanc de Blanc, LIMBO, Cantina, Tom Tom Crew, Feasting on Flesh and The Secret

“What I love about it is that I usually go in at the start of Death of Salvador Dali, which they tour across the country and the show, and audiences don’t know what to expect. And internationally. Scott said when he created the company he never imagined then to see people up on their feet clapping and screaming it would grow so much, but he’s proud of the way it has evolved and dancing by the end of the show, you really take them on a journey, and because everyone’s so close to the stage, you over the years. “I started touring Shakespeare, and I toured Shakespeare for really do get an electric atmosphere in the tent. “I think I just love seeing the audience’s reaction to what about eight years all around Australia, and then I just wanted to create a different type of experience, so I started Strut and Fret, we’ve created.” While Blanc de Blanc is the headline act of the which is about 20 years ago,” he said. Spiegeltent’s visit to Newcastle Civic Park during March and “Most of the shows that we create now have either circus, April, the 2018 season also includes separate performances spectacle or dance elements. from some of the best nationally and internationally touring “The company’s evolved what we’re doing. At the moment cabaret, comedy, music and dance shows, including singer we’ve got another show in the Opera House, another show Kate Miller-Heidke, bands such as the Audreys and The Black that’s just about to go on tour in Holland for two months, Sorrows, as well as comedians Rove McManus, Peter Helliar, and we’re just about to do a big festival in Adelaide. So the Tom Gleeson and Luke McGregor. company’s doing a lot of different things, and Blanc de Blanc “Blanc de Blanc is the central show, and then because the has been a part of that evolution. Spiegeltent is such a massive exercise in terms of setting up “It’s always great to create something new and get the and the logistics of getting it there, we wanted to get as many audience to feel something new and exciting. “I think the energy that live theatre makes, you can’t go past people into the tent as possible to experience the atmosphere, so we’ve added a separate program of music and comedy,” he it. It’s a totally different experience to watching Netflix on your laptop, you know what I mean, and that’s what’s exciting for me said. “We’ve worked with some of the great artists of Australia and in that it really is a celebration of being alive. “When you see these sorts of shows, you don’t have to think because the Spiegeltent is such a great environment people want to perform in there. too much. If you want to really think about things you can, but “We’ve really put together an amazing line-up to complement it’s just a time to enjoy it and take you outside your everyday Blanc de Blanc… it’s like a mini-festival in the tent. You can world. “You get a certain level of excitement about seeing someone visit a couple of times to see different things. We’ve got a magical venue, and we want as many people to experience it as do something extraordinary. You see a performer fly over the heads of all these people in the tent and do something, and you possible.” realise that actually they’ve got two arms and two legs just like me, but they’re really pushing themselves and doing something Tickets for the 2018 Newcastle Spiegeltent season are outside of the every day. 2018 Newcastle Writers Festival Announces a Stellar Line-up The Newcastle Writers Festival’s founding director, Rosemarie Milsom, launched the organisation’s sixth program late last month with the announcement that Kitty Flanagan, Richard Fidler, Michael Robotham, Tracey Spicer and Joanne McCarthy will be among 130 writers participating in the three-day event from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 April. Milsom also announced that Revitalising Newcastle had become the event’s core funder for 2018. “It’s business as usual for the festival, and I am looking forward to welcoming some of Australia’s best writers and thinkers to the inner-city in April,” said Milsom.

This year’s program includes 80 sessions and is inspired by the theme, “Discover the stories behind the stories,” with the freshly designed program cover featuring a complete short story by Port Stephens writer Joanna Atherfold Finn. The story appears in Atherfold Finn’s debut book, Watermark, which will be launched at the festival by award-winning Australian writer Robert Drewe. The pair met at the inaugural Newcastle Writers Festival in 2013 and Drewe has mentored Atherfold Finn ever since. “I was given the opportunity to interview Robert Drewe at the first festival, and this opportunity gave me a link to a respected Australian writer whose generosity, literary experience and publication knowledge resulted in an ongoing mentoring relationship that I value beyond words,” said Atherfold Finn. This year’s program spans three days and includes panel discussions, readings, one-onone interviews, and book launches. Session topics traverse the environment, Indigenous languages, the wellness industry, Newcastle’s music history, the legacy of the Commonwealth and the impact of the #MeToo movement. Thanks to a partnership with the locally run Catfish Foundation, there is a free Family Day in Wheeler Place on Sunday, 8 April, featuring local children’s writers and entertainers. Tickets are available from Ticketek. There is no need to book for free sessions. Visit www.newcastlewritersfestval.org.au for more information.

There is no stopping, there are no limits, always dancing.” The Moscow Ballet ‘La Classique’ will tour Australia during March and April with The Nutcracker. Australian Made, Comfort And Quality Home + Lifestyle WORDS DEBORAH BARTLETT - insideout Newcastle At insideout, we pride ourselves on the suppliers we use when offering our clients solutions to their furniture needs. Our insideout team are particularly passionate about offering Newcastle the chance to try our Molmic sofas, and our sofa gallery is one of the largest Molmic sofa galleries in NSW. Ethics, comfort and quality are major factors to consider when purchasing a sofa. Molmic has been around for over thirty years and the second generation is adding an exciting edge to the new models being released. Made in Melbourne the time frame for delivery is also shorter than some other brands offer. Five things to consider when purchasing a new sofa... Style – Style is personal taste, but a decision based on the actual home and room is necessary to bring a room together and set a theme for the rest of your home. When selecting, be mindful to choose a sofa or seating arrangement based on the look you want to achieve and the purpose of the room. This is very important and asking our insideout teams advice will not only save making expensive mistakes, but you will save money in the long term. Molmic has beautiful sofas that look like your grandmother had - filled with feathers newer design sofas made with feather fill and fabric slipcovers that can be washed (yes washed not drycleaned) Check out the Steele Avenue sofa if you love that cosy comfort with a coastal or Hamptons appeal - some are designed with slim arms and legs that fit well with Scandinavian or modern décor. Molmic produces classic designs that you will love for many years. Our favourite is the Alley available in a grande which is 264cm long. Size and configuration – Placing a sofa that is too large for your room will make the room feel very cramped and placing other pieces of furniture in the room will be difficult. Molmic has extra long options available which are great for long narrow rooms. Our team will then suggest suitable single chair options or a smaller sofa to complement

the seating arrangements. Team insideout will help you organise the room to encourage conversation and relaxation. The purpose of a room should always be considered before making your choice. Comfort – Ahhh!!!! This is most important. A feeling is very personal, and our team has many options to help YOU make the final choice. Feather-wrapped, full feather, firm, soft, high, low, extra wide insideout have it covered. Frame and materials used in the making of the sofa - It is important to note that Molmic manufactures all the frames in-house as this provides for greater quality control and factory efficiencies. They also use a process, which in cabinetry terms is referred to as mortice and tenon, this is a traditional manufacturing technique used to add strength to joints. Hardwood blocks are placed in corners for added strength. With attention to detail and precision, frames will provide you with a quality product that is made to last. All foams have been treated to eliminate odours and dust mites for people suffering from allergies or Asthma. (It also offers lasting protection against mould, mildew, and bacteria for healthier living and is supported by the Asthma Foundation). Fabric or Leather– If you love the feel of fabric but think leather will be more practical, don’t discount the idea of fabric. Insideout has a large range of fabric choices that are easily cleaned and resistant to stains, bacteria and mould. At insideout, we pride ourselves on our updated knowledge. Knowledge for the leather purists is also helpful when wanting real or leather lookalikes that will last the distance for growing families. Join us on Instagram for updates on upcoming events and advice. Look out for the grand opening of our Molmic gallery coming up soon. Call in to meet our team - ask questions and stay for coffee or tea while browsing through our showroom. The earlier you start to look, the easier it is to help you plan. UNIQUE HandCrafted Ceramics

{Made with Love!}

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer

In an age of fast fashion and disposable trends, Clay Canoe proudly stands out from the crowd. Created by Newcastle couple Wyan McAllister and Kyle Roddenby, the handcrafted ceramics are made with love to last a lifetime. The couple have a long history of creating unique products, having previously made a range of items including clocks and jewellery for their successful Darby Street store, Honeybee. But a desire to reconnect with the design process – and dispense with the burdens associated with having a retail outlet – saw Wyan and Kyle go back to basics to launch their Clay Canoe homewares line about five years ago. “Previous to owning a retail store we had worked for ourselves framing ceramics, casting resin wares, designing clocks and jewellery,” Wyan said. “After the retail experience, we craved the simplicity of just making, not managing, so ceramics and making became our sole focus again. Clay Canoe is the first time we have collaborated so completely. “Fortunately in the small amount of time we weren’t producing, the selling environment had completely changed, the social media platform transformed the life of the maker and people were coveting handmade! “It was exciting and inspiring; we felt we could contribute and so began Clay Canoe. We wanted our name to reflect the primitive beginning of vessels, their place in society and our current slow-food culture. “Making ceramics is a response to, and completely at odds with, the current cycle of disposable seasonal fashion trends, we’re creating a cherished piece that hopefully stands the test of time, doesn't get disposed of in the next fashion cycle but passed on to the next generation. What an honour! We are so completely grateful that people choose to bring our wares into their home.” Kyle grew up in Newcastle and began creating with clay at a young age while he helped his parents in their home pottery studio. Wyan moved to Newcastle to study ceramics when she finished school in 1994. The pair met around 20 years ago and shared a love of ceramics and the process of creating. “Kyle was the boy next door, literally,” Wyan said. “One day, 20 years ago, he came to my door and asked if I wanted all of his parents’ old ceramics materials, I fell in love that day! “We still use his parents’ tools and ingredients in our wares now, which gives us great pleasure.

“When we first started making domestic wares I felt every piece that came through was a second, but quickly I realised that the lack of perfection was also what made our wares authentic and appealing, it’s what people are craving in our technology-crazed lives. “Buying wares with integrity brings extra joy to the everyday rituals of eating and drinking, it’s about sitting back and taking that time out to really savour your morning cuppa.” Clay Canoe’s range includes everything from one-of-a-kind platters, vases and bowls, to distinctive mugs, cups and condiment dishes. It is a time-consuming process to make each piece, with Kyle crafting the initial ceramic item and Wyan taking control of the glazing. Depending on the size of the piece, it can take up to three weeks from start to finish, but for the Newcastle couple, it is a true labour of love. “I’m sure there are more time-consuming practices out there… hmm maybe not! The amount of time taken to make each piece varies on its size, larger pieces have to dry very slowly, so they don’t warp or crack and could take up to 10 days just to dry [longer in winter]. It takes about two weeks to make enough stock to fill the kiln as Kyle is currently the sole maker,” Wyan said. “Once everything is bone dry it can be bisque fired. I take over at this point and glaze for days then off it goes into another firing! All this takes another ten days. “Of course that doesn’t include the time taken to learn the knowledge and the endless failures that are required in order to make something that is worthy… or the endless conversations we have about how the piece should look, or the research, ordering and glaze mixing. “Ceramics compels you to continue on the journey of discovery and the endless possibilities. It’s certainly not the easiest path to choose, but it is very rewarding.” Clay Canoe products can be found online at www.claycanoe.bigcartel.com or by checking out their stall at the monthly Olive Tree Market, which will be held at Newcastle's Civic Park from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, March 3 or at upcoming markets on April 7 and May 5.

Beauty

The Art of FEELING BEAUTIFUL WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer

Gordana Poljak knows just how striking a great tattoo can be. Heavily inked on her arms, legs, chest and neck, the committed

Catholic turns heads wherever she goes with an elaborate collection of tattoos that depict everything from a flock of birds to the Virgin Mary. But it is the tattoos you don’t notice that can have the greatest impact according to the make-up-artist-to-the-stars, who has spent the past four years learning and honing the skills involved in eyebrow micro blading. While finely shaped lines and uber-plucked brows were once “the thing”, beauty trends have taken an about-turn in recent years thanks largely to the Armenian heritage

of American reality television superstar Kim Kardashian, according to Gordana. While women across the globe may desperately covet the thick, shapely brows of the most famous member of the Kardashian clan, achieving the look is not always so simple – at least without a little extra help. “Kim Kardashian, she’s the world’s inspiration for thick brows, 100 percent,” Gordana says. “The make-up you’re seeing on YouTube videos where the young girls are teaching everybody how to put the highlighter, the contour and the eyeliner, that is all to look like the Kardashian style of makeup. “The Armenian women were voted the most beautiful women in the world, I think, two years ago, so now everybody wants to look like a Kardashian. Lips have become bigger, eyebrows have become thicker and a lot of requests from people are ‘I want that Kardashian-style brow’. “As a make-up artist I plucked a lot too, and you have that chance that you might never have (the eyebrow hair) grow back. “If you were to look on my Instagram there are photos of people who have almost no eyebrows and the real challenge is not only to do the technique that you’ve been taught but how do I make the strokes look like they work in with her hair, so I do cross the rules a little bit.” While carefully applied make-up can work wonders filling in the gaps to create that thicker look, increasing numbers of women are opting for the more permanent solution of a cosmetically tattooed eyebrow. Cosmetic tattooing, also called micropigmentation, involves the controlled insertion of colour pigments into the dermis layer of the skin via small needles. The practice covers a number of different techniques including micro blading, which involves partially or fully camouflaging missing eyebrow hair with fine deposits of

cosmetic tattoo pigments to create the simulated appearance of hair. Gordana spent several years researching the area before undertaking training in both the fundamentals and advanced methods of cosmetic tattooing in Australia and the US, and is a member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals. While she offers her services in Sydney under the banner of Dr Freckle and Mr Hide, she is also now working wonders on a host of Hunter clients through Newcastle cosmetic surgery and medispa practice BellaFACE, located at Honeysuckle. “I’ve always been deeply passionate about evolving in my industry. Having accomplished so much with basic make-up, I decided to master permanent make-up,” Gordana said. “Micro blading is a handheld method using a tool that has on the end of it something that looks like a blade but is actually created with lots of needles pronged closely together. “The little blade is penetrated into the skin in tiny strokes to create the hair stroke, then the pigment is smeared over the top, so that when you wipe it off (some of the pigment) has

attached itself to the strokes in the eyebrow, creating naturallooking hair strokes. “I’m four years in the industry but it is not easy and every job is different, it’s a challenge. “I am very aware of the diligence needed in looking natural! My favourite phrase is when people say ‘You can’t tell it's tattooed’.” Clients raving about her work include a number of the on-air personalities from Channel Nine, where Gordana previously worked as the head of the make-up department. “I decided to go to Gordana from Dr Freckle and Mr Hide. I trust her implicitly as I’ve known her since she was the top make-up artist at Channel Nine,” media personality Shelly Horton said. “Heavily inked herself, I knew she’d be up-to-date on the latest techniques. After only the first treatment I was already thrilled with the results.” While Gordana has specialised in cosmetic tattooing for four years, her career in the make-up industry began around 19 years ago when she scored a freelance contract with Channel Nine. Her skills with the make-up brush and ability to visualise and then create an overall look for the on-air talent saw her soon join the broadcaster on a permanent basis, before later being promoted to the head of the department. It was in a make-up chair at Channel Nine where Gordana also met her former husband, renowned broadcast journalist Mike Willesee, with whom she has a son, Rok. Since leaving Channel Nine Gordana has worked with a host of film and television companies and is the make-up artist of choice for an impressive list of A-list movie stars when they are in Australia. This has seen her work with everyone from Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway, Anna Faris and Famke Janssen

to Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Rachael Taylor and Rachel Griffiths. Hollywood’s hottest male stars have also benefitted from her grooming skills, with clients including Tom Hiddleston, Vince Vaughan, Orlando Bloom, Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Ashton Kutcher and Hugh Grant to name just a few. Not a bad effort for a woman whose father was dismayed when she dropped out of an art teaching degree to become a make-up artist! While Gordana continues to work with some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood when they are in town, she concentrates most of her time these days on the cosmetic tattooing work. Having expanded her expertise beyond the permanent make-up, she also provides medical tattooing services for women who suffer from various conditions including alopecia and cancer. She can completely rebuild the appearance of eyebrows for cancer patients who have lost hair following chemotherapy, while breast cancer sufferers who have undergone a mastectomy can utilise Gordana’s expertise to recreate a three-dimensional-looking nipple and areola. She said the medical tattooing procedures can help restore both the appearance and the self-esteem of women and men who have undergone cancer treatment and surgery. “Most of them are immensely thankful, so grateful, some have cried, they’re so in shock when they see the little (tattoo) strokes,” she said. “It’s amazing what you can create if you can do a perfect 3D areola and it makes a woman feel like she’s got a complete breast. “I’ve had a client say ‘You make me feel like I’m beautiful’ and I tell her that’s because you are and now I’ve created something that has complemented and completed your look, and that makes me feel amazing.” ■

SUPPORTING

SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Liann Taffe

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer Liann Taffe knows the fear and pain caused by domestic violence. As a caseworker at Wallsend’s Warlga Ngurra Women and Children’s Refuge – and a survivor of domestic violence herself – the former Nyngan woman is constantly confronted with examples of the harrowing abuse being perpetrated within family homes. Having freed herself from her own situation, Liann now dedicates her life to supporting others in need and raising awareness of the issue of domestic violence. “I am a survivor I guess you can call it, but I hate that word. I experienced domestic violence for a long time, and I had to flee, so I came here (Warlga Ngurra.) I found a counsellor here, and I started dealing with the real issues,” she said. “I was told to go and get an education and bring it back so to speak, so that’s what I did. I went and got an education, and then a position became available here, and I came here, and that’s what I live for now. “I started off with a Cert IV in Community Services at TAFE - it was the first time in my life that I completed something as 30 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au

far as education was concerned. Then I went on to university (to study Social Science), and I have not finished, I’ve put it on hold for a little bit. “I love this field. What I’ve done I’ve done alone for myself and my babies, and I didn’t know where to turn to until I came to this refuge. Then I learned a little bit about not going back, about standing strong. “When clients come here I feel their pain, you know, a lot of people don’t get it, and as much as it’s out there in the open they’re still saying ‘It doesn’t happen in our family’, but it does. So I just became a very passionate domestic violence support worker.” The statistics around domestic violence are eye-opening. According to the White Ribbon Australia website, one in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence perpetrated by someone known to them, while even more shockingly, over a 12 month period, one woman is killed every week (on average) by a current or former partner. Indigenous women and girls are also 35 times more likely than the wider female population to be hospitalised due to family violence. Liann said it is a difficult journey for a woman to free herself from a situation of domestic violence.

go back to, whether it be to your original perpetrator or a new one. Until you educate yourself on what your standards are and what your limits are then people just keep going back or finding a new one. “Going through the refuge system as a client and now as a worker, I’m seeing fewer women lowering their standards just to be with someone and just to be happy and just have someone be a daddy to their children, you know. “I see them set standards for themselves and it’s amazing. The people that you think are the weakest are actually the strongest.” Aside from the practical support she offers her clients at the refuge, Liann is also passionate about educating others and encouraging more men to get involved in the battle to eradicate family violence. That passion was recognised recently by the Newcastle Jets, who named her one of their ‘Local Heroes’ for 2017-18 in recognition for her role in creating the Walk a Mile Koori Style event, which Liann has been organising for the past six years with the support of Warlga Ngurra and a number of sponsors. Inspired by similar community events including the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes campaign overseas, Liann has helped encourage more than 4000 men and boys since 2013 to walk through the streets of Newcastle to the top of King Edward Park and take the White Ribbon oath to “stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.” Her hope is that one day the event will catch on in other communities across Australia, with interest already coming from a number of areas. “We started off with 250 men, boys walking and now we average 600, 700 (each year),” Liann said. “At the end of the year between November the 25th and December the 10th there’s 16 days of activism, and it’s about no more violence towards women and children, so we hold the walk during that time. “I’ve got interest all along the east coast (of Australia), noone has just picked up and started doing it yet. It is hard work what we do, and I guess no-one’s got that passion yet to do it, but it’ll get there one day, that’s my dream. “Two, maybe three years ago, 84 women died of domestic violence and there was such momentum when the 16 days of activism hit that year. “I think it was 2014, the momentum was astronomical, I could feel it, and I could feel a change, a shift, and I still feel it, I feel things are changing. “It’s up to the person ultimately to change, but I see changes. They’re very small, but they’re significant, and I just think that the change will come and I think the youth who are taking the walk, who are giving the oath to the women, who are feeling the power on top of the hill, they’re going to change everything for us, I feel it.”

“It’s hard to leave domestic violence. It’s very fearful and traumatic, and the victims believe that they’re going to be killed,” she said. “And it is not a journey that ends in a year, and then you’re living normally, it’s something that you live with forever, or you

Where are the

spent Friday and Saturday nights. And so sets the scene for my introduction to dating. For years, the last song of the night was either Khe Sanh or You Shook Me All Night Long. The opening chords to these songs launched a drunken, sexually-charged, borderline psychotic game of musical chairs. Those notes were an alarm announcing that in less than five minutes the lights would be on and for all the desperate and dateless it was the last chance to pick up. So for three and a half terrifying minutes, the best you could do was stay out of the way, while horny Wranglerclad singles prowled the dance floor like they were auditioning for a part in Night of the Living Dead. When the song was over, and the doors flung open, the victors wandered into the darkness with their prizes arm in arm (I’m convinced this was more about balance than passion), and the losers were left to wait in line for a cab. Is it any wonder that with this as my training ground, I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to dating? To this day, when I hear Cold Chisel or AC/DC, I cross my legs and reach for my car keys out of pure instinct. With 15 years’ experience since then, you’d think I’d have the whole dating thing down to a fine art. But as I sit here replaying the horror that was last night’s date in my head, I clearly still have some things to learn. Now, I’m not saying this guy was a jerk. He may be perfectly nice and had had a really bad day, but from the time we ordered the first cocktail to the time I decided to skip dessert and started signalling madly for the cheque, the man didn’t

INSTRUCTIONS? WORDS TAMARA WRIGHT

When I was at school, girls could study whatever they wanted, as long as it involved home economics. I have to say, learning to sew a pillowcase and make edible corn fritters might have been designed to turn me into the perfect wife and homemaker, but it left me feeling desperately unprepared for the step preceding that – dating! When I was growing up, there was only one nightclub in town. For anyone over 18 (or in the days before photo ID, anyone who could memorise the birth date and star sign of an older friend and could stand upright) this was where you

have a nice thing to say about anyone or anything in life. He hated his job; couldn’t stand his money-grabbing ex-wife. I thought we were onto something when he started talking about his kids, but that turned into how pi**ed off he was about having to pay so much maintenance to said, ex-wife. At lunch with my friends the next day, wiping tears of laughter while describing the date’s details, I uttered the phrase familiar to singles the world over: “Why does this keep happening to me?” To my surprise, my ever-supportive friends’ reactions could only be described as, well, scoffing. My friend Mick rolled his eyes and went on to explain that it had nothing to do with my presentation skills or what he was certain is a thoroughly appropriate date dress. It’s more to do with my judgement. He went on to point out that for the ten years we’ve known each other, I’ve dated cheaters, drinkers, narcissists, a very nice gay man who had yet to come out and, unknowingly, an adulterer. In each case, in one way or another, I had tried to convince Mick they were all really sweet and just needed my love and support. During the few times I’d allowed myself to be single for more than a month, I’d been introduced to some rather handsome, nice and perfectly normal men and I was totally disinterested. I had to admit he was right. Sadly, I have no advice. Clearly, I’m just as clueless as everyone else, but it’s liberating to know I’m the problem - and I can fix me. One step at a time I guess. I would like to thank my friend Mick and all the other men I know who make it impossible for me ever to say “all men are horrible” and mean it. Some of them are pretty awesome – it’s just a matter of finding the one that’s awesome for me. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a hot date with this gorgeous guitar player who borrowed five bucks from me when I met him at the taxi rank after last night’s horror date. Wish me luck!

BE STRONG AT ANY AGE...

and Celebrate International Women's Day! Curves Charlestown is committed to making our local women stronger, both physically and emotionally and this is evident from the moment you walk through the doors – this is no ordinary gym. What you will find behind the purple doors is a circuit made up of machines ergonomically designed just for women – to enable women to strengthen, to get fit, lose weight, improve

their health and in turn, increase their self-esteem and enjoy a sense of positive control over their lives. The equipment is safe, simple, effective and adjusts automatically for every woman and every fitness level. And there is a coach on hand at all times throughout your workout – making it safe as well. What also makes the gym different is that each new member receives full instruction about how to use the hydraulic resistance machines, to get the best out of each one. Each machine targets a different muscle group, and after just 30 minutes of exercising on the machines, there is a customdesigned stretching circuit that leaves members feeling relaxed and energised. But what is truly unique is the team of highly trained, friendly and professional staff at Charlestown Curves. They are always on hand to guide, motivate and celebrate each member’s success especially at the free monthly coaching sessions. It is their passion that makes this gym so popular and is the reason they have successfully operated at Charlestown for 13 years. They also offer a wide variety of specialised classes incorporating yoga, boxing and balance as well as the popular Zumba and dance sessions Members range in ages from 13 to 85 and come from all walks of life – whatever your age Curves Charlestown can help you to live better and enjoy all facets of your life – to be strong at any age.

So, Why is Strength at Any Age Important? Well, let’s start with Metabolism. Sounds familiar right? You know that having a high metabolism is a positive thing and that improving your metabolism is a good thing - but why? Metabolism is your body’s ability to break down food for energy and burn calories, even while you’re sleeping. That’s right, burn calories while you’re resting! It’s a no-brainer you want to

increase your metabolism - the higher your metabolism, the more efficient your body is at breaking down food and burning more calories. A few factors are influencing your metabolism that you can’t control like your age, genetics, and your gender. Women begin to lose muscle mass after the age of 20, and once we reach 30, our body loses muscle mass quickly each year. But, we can alter a couple of factors that largely influence metabolism - physical activity level and lean muscle mass. Increasing your physical activity at any age will increase your body’s need for energy. This means your body will burn more calories for fuel and this will increase your metabolism. Strength training requires a lot of energy and builds lean muscle mass. To repair the tiny tears created in your muscle fibres after strength training your body needs energy. So, building lean muscle will boost your metabolism. Muscle burns fat and regular strength training increases muscle mass and helps improve the fat burning rate. Did you know that only 2kg of muscle increases metabolism by around 1,000 kilojoules or 250 calories per day? All of this can help reduce the risk of obesity and many other diseases like diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Not to mention those happy brain chemicals called endorphins which are released and help with depression and anxiety, as well as boosting your self-esteem because you have taken control. “I feel powerful, my posture has improved, and I am sure that my muscles are helping me to sit better at work and relieved backache. But best of all my boys are really proud of me,“ says long-term member, Linda. You can help Curves Charlestown celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday, March 8th by visiting the gym to try the fun Circuits and receive 30 days free! Call Maria, Shirley, Susan or Meg on 4942 1022 for more details, the team looks forward to celebrating with you!

A Big Year for Projects and Works in Newcastle! Parts of Newcastle are receiving a makeover from head to toe, as Newcastle City Council is charging through an ambitious plan of coastal revitalisation, civil works, repurposed heritage structures and upgrades to parks and playgrounds. "We are implementing a record capital works program and sound strategic planning to maintain and re-invent our historic city," said Mayor Nuatali Nelmes. "Newcastle is currently undergoing significant change as we transition from a great regional centre to an emerging global city." In addition to the projects below, works will soon commence to revitalise and improve local and neighbourhood centres, starting with Beresfield Local Centre and Young Street, Carrington. Bathers Way shared pathway - Two new sections have now opened along Newcastle's iconic Bathers Way. Shortland Esplanade has been transformed from Watt Street to Ocean Street, with a new roadway, drainage retaining walls, lighting and fences. Two new pedestrian crossings and a roundabout at the intersection of Zaara Street will help visitors in cars and on foot. The Hill has seen significant upgrades to the streetscape and footpaths around Strzelecki Lookout to improve pedestrian access, traffic and parking conditions. A new 4m-wide shared pathway along Cliff Street connects King Edward Park to Memorial Drive. Nobbys Beach - A spacious dual-purpose building with family change facilities and accessible toilets will be built at Nobbys Beach later this year to complement the recently refurbished surf pavilion. The 28sqm assisted-change room facility will include an accessible toilet, shower, basin and bench next to the lifeguard tower. A new lift and change amenities will allow for the future installation of a hoist to provide access

Playgrounds across the city - The ongoing overhaul of Newcastle's playgrounds continues in 2018, with work set to begin in March on $150,000 revamps of two parkland locations. Council will build a new playground at Smith Park in Hamilton North, with two slides, climbing structures, twin swings and a "nest swing" designed to accommodate several riders at once. A new picnic area will also be built to provide shade to families. Work will begin in April on a new playground at Grahame Park in Carrington which will include a play fort, double slides and a picnic shelter with an electric barbecue are among the features of the planned site. ■

project and long-term commitment to creating vibrant public spaces in our city. New playground at Blackbutt Reserve Stage one work on Blackbutt's Richley Reserve playground has been completed, providing a new main access to the area, accessible paths, shade shelters and bbq areas. These works will complement the adventure-style playground earmarked for completion in mid2018. A natural play space is being created and will include a climbing tower with bridges, slide and fireman pole, rope courses, tunnels, teepee, rock and stick play, tunnel slide, spinner, swings, sandpit, see-saw and imaginative play spaces.

for heavily mobility-impaired beachgoers. This project will dramatically improve access to Nobbys for people with mobility challenges and help us create a more inclusive city. Birdwood Park - The draft West End Public Domain Plan identifies Birdwood Park as the new heart of Newcastle's CBD, where office blocks and apartment buildings are springing up in close proximity to the newly opened Newcastle Interchange. Under the plan, Birdwood Park could feature an outdoor café, pedestrian plaza and open green space for civic and cultural events, while Little Birdwood Park, across King Street, will be expanded to integrate with the Marketown shopping centre. Public exhibition for the plan has been completed, and the submissions are now being reviewed for a final report to Council.

FLU VACCINE

Who Really Needs it? WORDS ANTHONY PIGGOTT - Piggott’s Pharmacy

Each year in Australia, influenza causes an estimated 3,000 deaths in older people. There are also the economic costs to the community of more than one and a half million lost work days, 300,000 doctor visits and 18,000 people admitted to hospital. However, it’s not just older people who are affected by the flu. The fact is, rates of flu infection are highest among young children; although children under the age of five are less likely to show typical symptoms of the flu – the fever and the cough – so you may not know that your child has actually contracted the infection. Most children cope pretty well with the flu, but young children are especially vulnerable to new strains such as the “swine flu” which was first identified in 2009. Their underdeveloped immune systems can’t manage the invading virus. So the flu virus picks its victims, singling out those people least able to resist the adverse effects. The greatest concern

for doctors and patients alike is the danger, not just of the flu itself, but of severe complications such as pneumonia and the effect of influenza on existing medical conditions. People with chronic heart, kidney or lung disease, diabetes or other long-term illnesses are, particularly at risk. The stress caused by influenza can worsen these conditions and even cause premature death. Today, prevention is our major weapon against influenza. You can help protect yourself by making sure your lifestyle is healthy with regular exercise you enjoy and a daily diet that includes the widest possible variety of foods. And, of course, annual vaccination against the flu is recommended for all people in high-risk categories. Everyone 65 years or older should have the flu vaccine. As well, at any age, you should be vaccinated if you have an ongoing illness such as diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, heart or circulation problems, or compromised immunity as a result of HIV, cancer or longer-term steroid use. Lately, there is also a special effort to ensure people who might spread the infection to the above groups are vaccinated. This includes health workers – doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, carers and even children. There is mounting evidence that widespread vaccination of children against influenza slashes infection rates in both children and the more vulnerable elderly. This year, once again, only certain brands of flu vaccine are recommended for children under ten years of age (following evidence of some adverse effects in young children a couple of years ago with a particular brand of vaccine). Your doctor or pharmacist can give you more details. The formulation of influenza vaccine for use in Australia is determined by the Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee based on information and recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO). As in previous years, the Australian Government will provide flu vaccine free of charge to everyone 65 years plus; and those people qualifying for the “free allocation” also include pregnant women, indigenous people 15 years and over, and anyone six months of age and over with a condition “predisposing to severe influenza illness” – such as heart or lung diseases. You can get more advice about whether the flu vaccine is right for you from pharmacies around Australia providing the Self Care health information. Phone the Pharmaceutical Society (PSA) on 1300 369 772 for the nearest location, visit the website at www.psa.org.au or Ask Piggotts!

RENOVATED RESPITE CENTRE Helps Families Enjoy Life

A renovation to NovaCare’s Ailsa Craig Cottage at Hamilton means Hunter families now have access to high-end, stateof-the-art respite care for their loved ones. The revitalised Cottage has four private bedrooms, each with access to a large ensuite, and offers a relaxing, home-away-fromhome experience for guests in a tranquil environment. The Cottage offers families from the Hunter region day, overnight, emergency, and planned respite care. “Respite care is so important, not just for the guests, but for caregivers. It provides caregivers with an opportunity to rest and recharge while continuing to care for their loved

ones,” Joseph McCarthy, CEO NovaCare said. “The support of Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation towards this renovation has meant that we’ve been able to create a respite cottage that is contemporary with all the comforts of home. From a care perspective the cottage is practical with the safety of our guests being paramount in the design while remaining visually appealing for our guests,” he added.

Perfectionism...

IS IT DRIVING US CRAZY? WORDS ANNE WARD – Mindinsight

The results of a recent study provide interesting reading. The study reported on rising levels of perfectionism in adults (18-25 years) across the United States, Britain and Canada. It observed generational changes in perfectionism over a 27-year period from 1989 to 2016. This may help explain trends in our own sphere of the world. What is perfectionism? Perfectionism involves placing excessive importance on high standards as well as being overly selfcritical and punishing. When we place such unrealistic standards on ourselves, it results in a sense of failure and self-criticism. The same applies when we place unrealistic expectations on others. They can feel devalued and criticised. Social norms set expectations. A disturbing finding from the research (Curran & Hill, 2017) was the large increase in socially-prescribed perfectionism. Social norms (e.g. beliefs about education, human rights, behaviour etc.) are messages (via advertising, films, TV, media etc.) that communicate to people what is desirable. People unconsciously evaluate themselves and others according to social norms. The research identified that over the past 30 years the importance that society places on perfectionism has increased by 32% - more than double the increase in self-prescribed perfectionism. This means that people have generally become more preoccupied with how they compare to others as a measure of their own success. Socially prescribed perfectionism means that people’s estimate of themselves is based on outward appearances and approval of others. When unrealistic expectations surround people, they lose their sense of reality and face the dilemma of constantly not “measuring up.” Social media helps create images and stories of success (e.g. body

appearance, clothing, friends, travel). Could the rise of social media be linked to the steep increase in perfectionism? The down-side. Although some might say that perfectionism is nothing more than self-improvement or achievement, basing our self-worth on it has a downside. This appears to be affecting young people the most. The authors noted some disturbing trends, including a significant increase in body image concerns and eating disorders in adolescent girls; concerns about body muscularity in boys; increasing use of plastic surgery by young people; a sense of isolation and sensitivity to negative feedback or mistakes. Young people are also experiencing higher levels of depression and anxiety. Perfectionism has also trickled down into parenting practices, with parents increasingly anxious, feeling pressure to make their children successful as well as themselves. Children can absorb their parents’ worry and become hypersensitive to making mistakes. How perfectionism works against us. In an imperfect world, relying on perfectionism as a one-size-fits-all approach is going to lead to problems. Perfectionism only provides options of success or failure. It doesn’t allow for the fact that most of the situations we encounter in life don’t have black and white answers. They are far more in the grey zone. Perfectionism encourages rigid thinking. What about just good enough? A pioneer in child psychiatry coined the term “goodenough” parenting. This is a style of parenting that doesn’t aim for perfectionism. Instead, it aims for a balance between being an involved and helpful parent, and at the same time, allowing freedom for a child to try and fail. This helps build a child’s sense of personal mastery as well as the sense that failure is part of learning. We could well ask: when is a good approximation a more useful goal? Rather than measuring ourselves against unrealistic, flawed goals, what about the possibility that where we are at in life is ok. Perfectionism also causes procrastination, because the perfectionist doesn’t want to risk failure. But avoiding challenges and new situations just results in loss of confidence and anxiety. Attempting things gets results and builds confidence over time. So rather than aiming for a perfect result, focus on getting things done and learning from experience. The reality is that no one is or can be perfect. Our imperfection makes us interesting. Our vulnerabilities make us more relatable. Let’s remember that most of the time, doing our best will result in feeling much happier and more satisfied.

Six Incredible Ways POWERCAMP Will Get You to Your Goal! WORDS BROCK MCINERNEY - Personal Trainer & PowerCamp Instructor, Urth Fitness Newcastle

By now I am sure we have all heard about the benefits of becoming fit and healthy. Where people get lost at times is understanding why we should be exercising and how to go about getting results. This is how the concept of PowerCamp at Planet Fitness and Urth Fitness came about. We have always had group fitness, but some members still wanted more, and this was how PowerCamp was born - a functional group fitness

Why do People Have Surgery?

WORDS DR GARY AVERY - FRACS (Plast Surg) Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Avery Plastic Surgery.

People have surgery for many reasons over many different surgical specialities. The better question for me to answer is ‘why do people have plastic or reconstructive surgery?’ The plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures we undertake at Avery Plastic Surgery include: removing large and serious skin cancers, particularly on the face; restoring breasts for women who have had a mastectomy following breast cancer; replacing areas of lost skin and tissue following significant trauma; improving scars following injury or previous surgery; alleviating back and neck pain with breast reductions; removing excess skin following significant weight loss or pregnancy, which relieves discomfort of potentially irritated heavy skin folds; reducing visual obstruction by removing heavy excess upper eyelid skin; altering breast size with either a breast lift or a breast implant, often sought as a balancing

workout programmed by our head coach Vicki. The concept is to create a balanced progressive exercise program for those wanting more from their training sessions. What does balance even mean? It means each week the program is varied, so you have a strength, cardiovascular and core workout each day that still allows you to train hard again tomorrow with a new workout. So you might be asking, is this too difficult for me? Short answer – no! We have people of all fitness levels come in and smash their goals. You can start from your current level and build a program that offers you unlimited potential to progress your fitness. One of the greatest results we have seen from developing this training system over the years is the community that has grown around it. We have “PowerCamper’s” going away on holidays with each other, having coffee and lunch together. Then when it comes to our Planet Games days (PowerCamp's competition day), you can see the bond they all share when everyone is cheering and encouraging their peers on.

Enough about what PowerCamp is and more about how it can help you! Fitness - Do you want to be able to run around with your kids, or be able to go for that afternoon run without feeling like you were going to die? Then PowerCamp can help you with this! The workouts are designed to make you cardio fit and quicker then you can imagine. Can’t run? Never fear we have ski ergs and rowers to increase your fitness. Strength - We have seen our members go from barely lifting

procedure with reference to body proportions; reduce or change the appearance and function of the nose; and children for birthmarks, scar revisions, ear pinning, and other assorted procedures. There are many reasons people choose to explore plastic and reconstructive surgery. Sometimes there is a crossover in the ‘why’, but people are individuals and as such the reasons and the life that has lead them to explore their surgical options are often somewhat different from one another. Some of the plastic and reconstructive procedures are primarily restorative in their aims. Breast reconstruction, and repairing skin/tissue, and scars are examples of these. Additionally, addressing functional concerns in some way frequently features in the reasoning for plastic and reconstructive surgeries. For example, alleviating the discomfort and irritation from large breasts, or from excess skin on the abdomen. Some procedures performed are primarily for aesthetic reasons. Many people we see want to change an aspect of their appearance based on how they feel internally. A common misconception is that people have plastic and reconstructive surgery to stand out from the crowd, but in fact the majority of people we meet want to blend in and see themselves as more in line with their friends and family, and their community. Examples of these include male breast reduction, rhinoplasty (nose), and pinning ears back. Each person has a unique life journey that brings them to their decision to seek our services. We do not debate the social and cultural constructs of changing ones’ appearance, and it is not my place to make personal judgements about the information people seek or the changes they are hoping to achieve. However, it is my responsibility to ensure all people who come to me for a consultation about any procedure,

the bar to being able to squat their body weight (that means their body weight on the bar on their back). At the beginning of each PowerCamp session, a strength movement is performed. For example, Monday might be squats: 3 sets of 10 repetitions, Tuesday might be deadlifts and so on. This has been designed so in a week's worth of training you have evenly hit all parts of your body strength wise. What's also interesting is each week the sets and reps change to work on different forms of strength. Functionality - When we go to the gym, it's great to become fit and strong, but sometimes a normal gym program leaves us stiff and sore. An amazing facet of PowerCamp is that the movements that make us functionally fit also make everyday life that little bit easier - from doing the washing to playing sport. Balance and Stability - Often overlooked and not thought about is the importance of balance and stability in an exercise program. PowerCamp provides an avenue for you to work on this while getting fit, as the nature of the beast incorporates dynamic functional movements and not to mention develops our core, which has much to do with our balance. Fun - We can all get serious with our training, which is important. Here at PowerCamp, we train hard, but before, after and sometimes inbetween you’ll see smiles and hear laughs. Then when we look at the exercise program, the variety brings a freshness keeping everyone engaged and enjoying his or her experience. Community - Coming to the gym can at times be demotivating at times; this is where our PowerCamp can come into a new level of support. Not only do you have our trainers here to help you through each moment, but the other PowerCamper’s support and friendship. If you would like to know more about our PowerCamp classes, come down to Urth Fitness so we can show you all we have to offer you!

including those procedures with an aesthetic focus are fully informed. My role is to talk with them about their expectations, what is achievable with surgery, and what are the possible consequences. This includes the very serious decision to undergo surgery, which always carries an element of medical risk. These risks include understanding the permanency of the scars associated with the procedure, and the problems that can occur with the body away from the surgical site such as possible clots in the leg that can ultimately be life-threatening. Another risk that ALL surgeries have is the possibility of needing more surgical intervention or medical treatment related to the outcome of the initial surgery. The decision to proceed with the surgery is a joint decision between the surgeon and the patient. Ultimately, if I believe the expectations are unrealistic or deviate significantly from what the general medical community would consider acceptable, then the surgery will not proceed. Having a consultation to explore surgeries you have been considering is not equivalent to committing to proceed with that surgery. It is about information gathering and increasing your knowledge so you can make a fully informed decision. We never book elective surgeries on the day of the consultation to encourage people to go away and think seriously about the decision. I would like to think we provide a non-judgemental, safe, and warm space in our Practice for people to explore their options. I would hope we do this regardless of the ‘why’ they are having surgery. If you have questions, you would like Dr Avery to answer; please email info@averyplasticsurgery.com.au.

Dr Avery has operated as a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in the Hunter region for over five years, treating over 5000 people with reconstructive or aesthetic procedures. www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 37

GUM BALL WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer

It’s one of the most loved and highly anticipated music festivals on the Hunter’s event calendar. But when Matt Johnston put together the first edition of The Gum Ball in 2005, all he really set out to do was host a small music festival in his parents’ front yard.

“With this line-up this year there’s Screamfeeder and even Hat Fitz and Cara, they’re artists that we’ve been trying to get onto the Gum Ball since the very first one. Hat Fitz was booked to play the very first Gum Ball back in 2005, and I actually changed the date, and he couldn’t make the new date, and this is the first time he’s ever been. “It’s a very daunting thing selecting a line-up for Gum Ball. It took six months to organise and saw about 200 people roll But because I love music, and I love different types of music, up to see a bunch of bands do their thing in the bushland every single one of those bands has passed the test for me I surrounds of the Johnston family property at Belford, which is guess in some form, and I think it all goes together into a pretty now known as Dashville. good mix of music over a weekend.” Fast forward 13 years and The Gum Ball has evolved into With BYO arrangements and on-site camping, The Gum Ball one of the hottest tickets in town - a three-day gig that regularly is a lot more laid back than your average music festival, but attracts more than 1500 music lovers of all ages to see a mix of emerging and established Australian and international bands. Johnston said that is another major element of its appeal. “People really enjoy it, it’s nice and simple, no unnecessary The 2018 festival will take place on April 27-29, with 27 rules,” he said. bands and musicians on a truly diverse line-up, headlined by “It’s also pretty accessible for families to come along too, the hugely popular Melbourne-based hip-hop artist Remi and supported by everyone from The Bamboos and Butterfingers to there’s a lot of parents that bribe their kids during school holidays that they have to be good or they won’t get to go to French Canadian outfit Les Hôtesses d'Hilaire in their first tour Gum Ball. to Australia. The diversity of the music on offer is certainly one of the real attractions of The Gum Ball according to Johnston, with the line-up mixing musical genres and styles from rock and soul, through to hip-hop, country and everything in between. “I think people sort of see it as a bit of a discovery for new music, I think that’s one of the reasons (they like coming to Gum Ball),” he said. “I guess it’s hard to be on the pulse of new music these days, so a lot of people I know treat Gum Ball as their big discovery, they’ll meet 30 new bands each year, so I think that’s probably a big (attraction) for sure. “It’s a daunting task putting together the line-up for Gum Ball, always has been and I guess we’re always proud of what we achieve at the end, but it’s definitely a rollercoaster. “There’s always bands that you’ve got on your target; there’s “We’re sort of unique in what we provide.” still bands that I’ve been trying to get for ten years that I still Along with its musical element, The Gum Ball also offers haven’t been able to. gourmet food and market stalls, kids’ crèche, yoga, skate “We’ve definitely achieved a lot of great acts like You Am I demos, workshops, live art and a very popular late night silent and Hoodoo Gurus - bands that we just couldn’t wait to have disco. come along and perform at Gum Ball.

“I think (it works) because it is a fairly simple concept. We have lots of great music, and we have a bit more of an exclusive festival feel. For people that have probably been to a lot of festivals or haven’t been to one in a long time, Gum Ball’s a good comfortable option.

EASTER...

It’s a Choc Fest!

We might all be trying to eat healthier and get to the gym. However, studies have found that Australians haven’t abandoned chocolate along the way, with Australians coming in a proud seventh in the worldwide chocolate consumption stakes – with the average Australian consuming 4.9kg of chocolate each year. With their wonderful chocolate, it comes as no surprise that the Swiss people lead the way eating just under 9kg of chocolate each year – followed by neighbouring Germany with annual consumption per capita amounting to 7.9kg. This Easter, Australians are likely to spend more than $200 million on chocolate, and on Easter Sunday millions of us will be tucking into delicious chocolate eggs as the Christian world celebrates. But while many of us may be familiar with the story of Easter, its relation to eating oval-shaped chocolate is less clear. Interestingly, many people today associate Easter with chocolate eggs and the Easter bunny rather than the Christian commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A sign perhaps that religion plays a lesser part in our lives than ever before or that the popular custom of chocolate Easter eggs and gifts combined with a host of other factors - from the way we eat to the way we live generally - has determined the chocolate fest that is now Easter

So how did this all come about? Located in the heart of Pokolbin, Hunter Valley Chocolate Company has been a family owned and operated Hunter Valley gem for the last 19 years. Indulge in the ultimate chocolate experience, with a tantalising range of premium hand-made chocolate and chocolate products plus more than 30 flavours of freshly made fudge!

While the chocolate Easter egg is a relatively new tradition the origin of the Easter egg, and other modern-day Easter symbols, such as the Easter bunny, goes back a very long way and pre-date Christianity. The historical intermixing of pagan, Christian and Jewish beliefs and practices has left its legacy in many of the things we now take for granted about Easter and its traditions. Originating in the northern hemisphere, Easter draws heavily on pagan traditions marking the change in the seasons as winter gives way to spring. Rabbits were the most potent symbol of fertility and the egg, the start

of all life has been a symbol of rebirth and fertility for many centuries. Decorating and colouring Easter eggs was a popular custom in the middle ages, and throughout Europe, different cultures have evolved their own styles and colours. The 17th and 18th centuries saw the emergence of the egg-shaped toy, which was sold and given to children at Easter – often filled with sweets. The first chocolate Easter eggs were said to be created in Germany and France at the beginning of the 19th century. Soon the Easter egg market grew beyond all expectations - with the custom spreading throughout the world. Thus began the tradition of Easter eggs not only as a chocolate confection but also as a customary gift which over time developed from the simple paper wrapped version to the beribboned variety wrapped in bright foil and packed in a basket. Easter in Hunter Valley Wine Country is celebrated much like it is in most places in the world with the giving of Easter eggs and gifts and Hunter Valley Gardens hosting the annual and very popular Easter Egg Hunt. In the Hunter Valley, Chocolate has also proved to be a big tourist drawcard and the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company is the sweetest and most addictive attraction around using only the finest Belgian couverture chocolate, together with Australian dried fruits and nuts. No trip to the Hunter Valley is complete without a visit to the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company, especially at Easter - they have a delicious range of Easter eggs and other Easter treats on display at each of their three stores located at Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village, Petersons House and at ''Twenty-3-Twenty'' - Broke Road in Pokolbin. The latter also features a large viewing window where the Chocolatiers and Fudgemakers can be observed busily making the range of chocolate and fudge for all three outlets. Whatever your beliefs, Easter today represents a time for the celebration of new life and fertility. The giving of chocolate Easter eggs and gifts, the Easter egg hunts, familiar images of young bunnies and chicks – combining many of the age-old customs that we now enjoy in our own way.

Perfect Backdrop!

Of course a wedding reception is only as good as the food and wine served up to its guests, but there are no worries when it comes to the quality of the menu at Tamburlaine. The catering is prepared by renowned Hunter chef Matt Dillow from The Deck Café (and previously from the Verandah Restaurant), while the wine list is chosen from the wide selection of award-winning reds and whites produced by Tamburlaine onsite. “Matt has designed a fabulous list of meals to choose from, and he is always happy to tailor a menu to suit the bride and groom’s particular requests,” Lou said. “Our Reception Package includes canapes and a three-course alternate drop meal. “One of the things people love about having their wedding at Tamburlaine is that we’ve got a large range of organic wines to choose from. Our wines complement the wonderful menus that our chefs have designed.”

Lou said they can do as little or as much as the bride and groom require when it comes to organising the event and pride themselves on ensuring every wedding is a truly special day for all involved. “We’re committed to personal service from start to finish,” she said. “Some brides want to organise all their own decorating and others would prefer that we took care of it for them. We can do as much or as little as they like us to. “We only do one wedding a day so the whole property is exclusively yours. To make your day even more memorable we can provide a fireworks display for that wow factor while you cut your cake. “We take great pride in making sure the bride and groom have all their special plans come together.” ■

When you’re planning your wedding reception there are three main things to think about – the food, the wine and the venue. While beachside locations have always been a popular option, there’s no better way to combine those most important elements than with a wedding among the vines in Hunter Valley wine Country. Tamburlaine Organic Wines have been playing host to blushing brides and gallant grooms for more than a decade, serving up a mix of picture perfect backdrops and gourmet delights that are guaranteed to please the most discerning newlyweds, their families and friends. Tamburlaine’s General Manager – Wedding / Events Lou Davidson said the winery could cater for everything from a simple celebration to a lavish affair, including both the ceremony and the reception. “We hold the ceremonies on our beautiful lawn, or in wet weather, on the covered waterside deck overlooking our peaceful lagoon … both areas are spectacular for photos, as well as being completely private,” she said. “You’re welcome to have your ceremony here or go to one of the local chapels and just come here for your reception afterwards.

“The receptions are held inside The Lodge – our homestead-style air-conditioned and freshly painted venue that holds up to 180 guests. “We built the function centre in 2001 and we started doing weddings here in 2003. The Lodge started as our new members’ tasting area, but quickly became a favourite venue for corporate dinners and weddings. As word of mouth spread, the bookings increased! “The benefit of The Lodge being such a spacious room is that we can set up your reception to suit you. “The venue is very private, and Crystal (Allan) and I work with the bride and groom to make their day as special as they dreamed. “We are there until the last guest leaves to make sure everything goes exactly to plan. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile to make everything perfect.” Tamburlaine is a privately owned winery set over 80 acres at Pokolbin, which includes the organic vineyard used to produce many of Tamburlaine’s award-winning wines. The winery also includes expansive manicured grounds, which provide plenty of options for photographers to capture that perfect shot of the happy couple and their wedding party. “We have plenty of beautiful areas for gorgeous photos, which means the bridal party don’t have to leave Tamburlaine to find the perfect photo opportunity,” Lou said. “We have the water, lawn and vineyard all at The Lodge. This means the bride and groom can get back to their guests and the party sooner!”

Bridal

BEAUTY COUNTDOWN Preparation for your wedding starts months and sometimes years in advance and so too should your beauty regime! Makeup artist Diane Grover from Empire Artistries says it’s never to early to begin. “I often advise my clients to start their beauty regime 12 months before the actual wedding,” says Diane. While that’s not possible for all brides, Diane has provided us her glowing brides program, starting 3 months prior to the big day. THREE MONTHS OUT - Start looking for the perfect tan. The idea is a gentle glow rather than obvious orange. If you don’t already have a regular spray tanner, start testing them out now. A spray tan only lasts 5-7 days so any disasters will be long gone before your wedding day. Ensure your tanner writes down your formula every time you go so once you do find the perfect colour you can feel confident knowing it will be the same for your

wedding. A gentler, cheaper and perhaps safer bet might be to use gradual tanning creams at home. Find one you like and stick to it, work out the optimal time and amount of applications you need before your big day. TWO MONTHS OUT - Ease up on your hair and makeup - try avoiding the hair dryer, straighteners and curling tools for the next couple of months to allow your hair time to repair and gain back some of it’s natural shine and bounce. Backing off on the foundation to allow your skin to breath and decongest is also a good idea, as well as easing up on the mascara to let your lashes strengthen, grow and repair themselves. ONE MONTH OUT - Try to avoid too much sun exposure to prevent any unsightly tan lines or peeling. If you need to spend a lot of time outdoors, remember the good old ‘slip, slop slap.’ Too much exposure to sun can cause the skin to look hard and leathery in a short space of time. ► www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 43

THREE WEEKS OUT - Have your final cut and colour. This will allow time for blunt cut lines to soften and colour to be shampooed a couple of times to take on a more natural appearance, ensuring there are no tint stains around the hairline. TWO WEEKS OUT - Grab a buddy and treat yourself to a massage or spa treatment - with so much planning and preparation for the wedding, it can get a little overwhelming so take some well deserved time out for yourself. ONE WEEK OUT - Have your final wax – this will allow time for the skin to settle down from any redness before the big day, but it won’t be enough time for new hairs to sprout. THREE DAYS OUT - Have your final tan, you know your preferred colour and product already. Just remember to steer clear of deodorant,

perfume and moisturizer to avoid any patches. ONE DAY OUT - Shampoo and condition your hair and leave it to dry naturally as your hair stylist will use the right products and tools to manipulate it into your wedding style tomorrow. Have your final manicure and pedicure with the perfect colour you have been obsessing over for the past 5 months! Drink plenty of water to plump skin cells and reduce bloating. THE BIG DAY - Use a mild cleanser with a wash cloth to gently exfoliate the skin, avoid any harsh exfoliants which can make the skin red and sensitive. Follow with a light moisturizing lotion rather than a heavy cream which can cause makeup to look greasy and slide from the face. Apply a lip conditioner to the lips and gently buff off any dead skin with a wash cloth or a soft, dry toothbrush. Check your nails for any last minute touch ups and use a hand and foot cream containing paraffin to smooth the skin. Apply a light body lotion to the exposed skin areas, allowing plenty of time to dry before dress time. Drink water to stay hydrated and ensure your skin is radiant, glowing and flawless. Make sure you take a touch up powder and lipstick with you and a few emergency bobby pins, particularly if you are planning to remove your veil after the ceremony. Relax and enjoy looking (and feeling) this good! For Diane’s 12 month regime, visit www.intouchmagazine.com.au/weddings or contact Diane at info@empireartistries.com ■

HIGH TEA HENS in the Hunter!

If you are looking for something a little different for your Hens Party (or baby shower), something altogether more sophisticated, something that’s sure to delight your soon-to-be mother-in-law, then a short trip to the Hunter Valley for a highly decadent High Tea might be just what you’re searching for. The Sabor Tea Room is, without doubt, the Hunter Valley’s premier Tea House where you will enjoy the ultimate High Tea experience. The moment you walk up under the timber pergola and enter through the white French doors you’ll be transported to High Tea Heaven. From the Egyptian lead crystal chandelier hanging above your head and crisp white table linen to the antique Royal Albert Teapots and tea sets that are almost 100 years old, mostly sourced from local antique dealers, vintage stores, close friends and mothers china cabinets. Owners of Sabor Tea Room, Fernando and Renata Antao have spared no expense when it comes to making your High Tea experience an unforgettable one – High Tea at this destination will be as memorable as your wedding day. The High Tea menu has been created by Head Pastry Chef Nicole Fang. Nicole has been with Sabor for over four

years, and previous to that has worked in International hotels including Asara, a 5-star hotel and wine estate in South Africa where she started as Sous Pastry Chef, then promoted to Head chef within two years. Nicole trained under French, Swiss & German pastry chefs and has had over 12 years in the pastry industry. Her dedication and perfectionism to pastry have been on display at Sabor Dessert Bar for the last four years before creating the Sabor High Tea menu, which is both a culinary & visual experience like no other in the Hunter Valley. From the French style mini croissants to the handmade chocolates and everything in between, all the treats are made fresh on location and using only the finest of ingredients. You will have the menu explained and served by the chefs themselves and enjoy an unlimited supply of their selected teas and freshly ground coffee from the coffee machine. Sabor has always prided themselves on specialising in one thing and one thing only, dessert, and they now plan on doing the same here with their High Tea, It’s a set menu which is varied enough to satisfy the most discerning palette. They can also cater to individual dietary requirements, given enough notice).

Sabor Tea Room High Tea’s are by booking only. Visit www.sabortearoom.com.au to organise your bridal party to experience the pinnacle of High Tea in the Hunter Valley.
