SPR I N G 2021 As we approach the end of 2021, we look back at another year that has seen us overcome more challenges in the face of an enduring pandemic.

To overcome these challenges, Atwea again has had to prove our agility and responsiveness. Our main goal is to always provide inclusive and accessible education to our students. We strive to ensure their success, despite the barriers they may face.

We are here to support them in their learning journey and make sure they achieve the outcomes they desire. Educational attainment is increasingly important as the demand for skilled employees grows. A modest improvement especially in the educational outcomes of young Australians would result in significant economic gains.

In the first week of September, Atwea College celebrated a world-wide week dedicated to highlighting the outcomes of adult learning. For Adult Learners Week this year, we celebrated with the theme ‘Change Your Story’. We have an incredibly diverse student base, from all walks of life, who are wanting to change their lives. We are always proud to be a vehicle through which they make this change, steering them toward a brighter future where they have choice and opportunity. If they want to make the change, we will do whatever it takes to make this happen.

Atwea has been highly successful in attracting funding to support skills training in emerging areas of vocational pursuit. This is about identifying areas of employment need in our region and then working closely with employers and funding bodies to develop accredited courses. We want to ensure we can support our region’s economic recovery through education, training and community development.

Students who enrol with community education providers such as Atwea consistently show the greatest increase into employment of any provider type.

Community Education graduates were also the most satisfied with assessment, the most satisfied with the overall quality of training and the most willing to recommend their training providers.

Atwea College and Alesco Senior College do more than just educate students. We prepare them for life – developing communication skills, self-discipline and respect for themselves, their peers and their world.

We also strongly believe in the benefits of a rounded education, including the teamwork, self-expression and personal development that happens outside the classroom.

At Alesco, we know young people who complete Year 12 have a greater likelihood of being employed throughout their adult life and are less likely to be reliant on welfare, compared to their peers who do not complete school. Our school aims to develop students into independent and successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens – with the view to giving them all the skills, knowledge and capabilities to thrive.

We are also very proud of our Learn for Fun courses which enable health and wellbeing, engagement in recreational pursuits and increased community participation.

As we near the end of 2021 we would like to congratulate all of our students at Atwea College and Alesco Senior College who have completed, or are completing their studies and wish them all the very best for the future. We hope we have provided you with the support and confidence to take the next step in your journey.

SKILLS TRAINING With this, she taught her first Diploma of Beauty Therapy course. She was inspired to teach after attending some trade industry workshops and having gained more experience through her travels, really wanted to pass her knowledge onto others. In 2005 she moved to Newcastle and combined training and working as a therapist to further develop her skills and gain more experience.

Jaimie loves anything to do with the skin and enjoys result driven treatments and educating students about skincare technology and ingredients.

INCLUSIVE LEARNING

Since studying the Diploma of Beauty Therapy herself in 1995, Jaimie Adamson has had a very rewarding career in the beauty industry. After graduating, Jaimie worked for 4 years as a beauty therapist, gaining vast experience and knowledge that gave her the confidence to work in London for 3 years. It was in London she was given the opportunity to manage a successful salon in 2 locations, Kensington and Marylebone.

When returning to Australia, Jaimie moved to Perth and worked in a day spa for 3 years.

Whilst living in Perth, her passion for training came to fruition and Jaimie completed her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

At Atwea College, Jaimie now teaches the nationally accredited Diploma of Beauty Therapy. This involves teaching hands-on skills to learners like massage techniques, skin analysis and providing knowledge about how the skin and body function in order to successfully apply treatments in a professional manner. The Diploma of Beauty Therapy teaches knowledge and skills around lash and brow services, facial treatments and skincare recommendations, waxing services, design and application of make-up, manicure and pedicure services, customer service, applying safe hygiene and health and work practices.

Jamie instills confidence in her students so that they can be job ready and fulfill a rewarding career within the beauty industry.

Jaimie chose to teach at Atwea College as she believes we encourage learning in a safe, supported and connected way that promotes student wellbeing and creates inclusive learning opportunities for everyone.

She feels completely supported at Atwea and her experience has been very positive.

Term 4

After leaving Wallsend High School in year 9, Amanda was struggling with reading and spelling and never thought she would be able to achieve her studies. Amanda had heard positive stories about Atwea College and decided to enrol in the Certificate III in Individual Support, Disability. Travelling from Windale to Raymond Terrace two days per week, Amanda became determined to succeed.

Being a single mother to 6 daughters and a foster carer for 6 years, Amanda has looked after children who live with disability and feels helping others is her calling. She now believes she has the skills and passion to help other adults living with disability. Her daughters are her biggest drive to succeed and she wants to show them how to be brave and confident.

In the Certificate III in Individual Support, Amanda learned how to support independence and wellbeing, how to work with diverse people, the line of legal and ethical work, and how to follow safe work practices. She also learnt about community participation and social inclusion and how to facilitate the empowerment of people with disability. She is now ready to take her skills and knowledge and apply them in the real world.

Amanda is always caring and supportive to her class mates which helps create a positive class environment. With the help of her trainer Trudi, Atwea Student Support Services and the training coordinator, Amanda has grown in confidence. She has learned that it is okay to ask for help when needed. One of Amanda’s daughters also studied the course with her.

Amanda found the positive environment she needed at Atwea College. She felt supported all the way and enjoyed the smaller classes which gave her a more individualised experience. Staff were always there to talk about the next steps in her journey and help where they could.

In the future, Amanda would like to continue her studies at a higher level and work in the disability sector. With all the support from Atwea, Amanda now feels confident to face the future.

ATWEA NEWS

AMAZING OUTCOMES Congratulations to our Diploma of Beauty Services class of 2021 who, after completing their Certificate III in Beauty Services with Atwea, returned for their diploma studies in October 2020 and despite the hurdles and setbacks of a global pandemic, were able to complete their course and graduate in July 2021.

The graduation ceremony was held at Brown Sugar in Warners Bay and was a great night for all involved. This is an excellent demonstration of our theme “outcomes” with all students finding employment within the industry and one starting her own beauty business.

Good luck and well done all!

THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE We are proud to be one of nine Newcastle and Hunter based Charities to have been awarded a funding grant for life-changing projects at the May 2021 Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Grant Ceremony. The funds will be used to purchase seven mobile science labs and related consumables for our seven Alesco Senior campuses operating across the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter, Port Stephens and Mid-North Coast areas. We can’t wait to see how this grant helps to shape the outcome for our young scientists at Alesco!

HIGH SCHOOL AT ALESCO HYDRO FARMING TAKES ROOT AT ALESCO NORTHLAKES Last year Alesco Northlakes won a $2,100 grant from Lake Macquarie Council, matched by fundraising from the school, which has enabled them to purchase and install a vertical Hydro farm. Students have been busy setting up the farm and are now ready to plant their first crop. A special mention goes out to resident volunteer gardener Ric Marley for the countless hours he has put into the installation project. Northlakes looks forward to tending to their garden and growing their fresh produce.

MAKING WAVES WITH INTERNATIONAL PROJECT Alesco Senior College recently participated in The Manning River Turtle Conservation Project by making 60 craft turtles using paddle pop sticks, wool and a simple weaving technique. Their baby turtles formed part of a large mother turtle, covering 8m x 10m to be photographed from the air by a drone. The project was mainly driven by the school’s Visual Design class with some students in years 9 and 10 contributing as well.

The project aims to bring awareness to the local community about our endangered Manning River Helmeted Turtle. The turtle is a 55 million year old reptile, found only in the middle and upper catchment areas of the Manning River in NSW. It is a medium short-necked freshwater turtle and was listed as an endangered species in 2017.

The project is in collaboration with artist Shona Wilson and the international organisation with Nature2020.
